The Ashburton Trust is selling off its businesses and for the first time in its history will become simply a landlord and a distributor of community funds.

Over the next few months the trust will put the Tinwald Tavern, Tinwald Motels, Speight’s Alehouse, The Somerset Grocer and the Hotel Ashburton on the market as it restructures to a business model its board believes will secure its future for the Ashburton community long term.

Board chairman Alister Lilley said the decision to sell up had not been made lightly but it was a decision that had to be made to ensure the trust had a future.

With six years where it had not made a trading profit behind it, Mr Lilley said the trust wanted to reshape its business now, rather than wait until it was forced to do so by the bank or by the auditor general.

“We’ve decided to offer all of our businesses for sale except the Devon. We’ll retain ownership of the bricks and mortar. We believe the hospitality businesses are best suited to be run by hands-on operators close to the coal face.”

The trust has had the five properties valued and all but the Hotel Ashburton will be listed for sale on February 27. The Hotel Ashburton will be advertised for sale from April 4. Until a sale is achieved, it will be business as usual at all outlets, Mr Lilley said.

“We certainly won’t be having a fire sale.”

Because of the age of the Devon building the trust board has decided to continue running this business until it decides the future of the tavern site.

The decision to sell had not been made lightly, Mr Lilley said.

“If we don’t change the model, the debt level will go from zero to $20 million in 10 years, so doing nothing is not an option. We believe this is the best option available to protect the business for the community. We have to do this now while we have a choice.

It would be easy to do nothing,

but that would only last so long because we’re not making money through trading.”

The failure to make a trading profit came not through a lack of patronage but because of things such as high overheads trusts carried because of their public responsibility and high audit costs.

“The auditor general is becoming increasingly concerned about licensing trust profitability (generally) and their long-term future and a number of other trusts around New Zealand have already restructured in a similar manner.”

While it was selling off its businesses, the trust itself would remain, Mr Lilley said.

“We’re not going away, the ALT is not going away, we’ll own the bricks and mortar, we just won’t

be business owners. We’re shoring up the income stream for the community for the future, we’ll have growth options that we don’t have now.”

Divesting itself of its businesses was just another step in the trust’s evolution; the new business model was a model for the 21st century, he said.

“We’re not selling the crown jewels, the crown jewels will stay here, that’s the critical thing.”

WHY IS THE TRUST SELLING? Over the years the trust has been a profitable community organisation.

It invested profitably in the Christchurch property market and became the administration headquarters for a number of smaller trusts.

That profitability spiked in 2008 when it sold its Christchurch investments.

It then invested heav-

ily in new start-up ventures in Ashburton – Speight’s Alehouse, Braided Rivers, Tinwald Motels, Hades Pizzeria at the Tinwald Tavern, The Shed and The Somerset Grocer.

Some of those failed to fire and were closed.

It also demolished the Somerset Tavern and built Somerset House.

This was funded in part by interest free loans from the trust to the Somerset House Charitable Trust which eroded the trust’s profitability.

usiness sell-up ‘Good move’ While the trust’s decision to sell its businesses came as a surprise to Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay (above), on reflection he said he believed it would be a good move for the future.

There would be options for the trust to invest in the future and there would be assurances that money would be returned to the community and that was good all round, Mr McKay said.

Investing in businesses outside of the hospitality sector had been good for the trust in the past and it could be good again in the future, he said.

“I’m very excited about the opportunities for the future. It will open up a number of doors that are possibly closed now.”

Selling the individual businesses would also create opportunities for new people to come into the district and that was good for any community, Mr McKay said.

“The figures don’t lie,” Alister Lilley, trust board chairman, said.

The sale of the five businesses will generate a significant lump sum of cash for the trust which it will use to repay existing debt or reinvest in community assets.

As a landlord the trust will have a secure ongoing income for the future and it will have the confidence of knowing it will produce a profit each year.

The trust was established to provide hospitality, accommodation and refreshment to the public and to do this it does not need to run the businesses itself, that mandate can be achieved

It has not done this since 2008 but the new business model will ensure it can again meet this requirement.

For people using the venues the only change will be a different owner. The trust has already sold its Burnett Street business Braided Rivers and the sale of the five other businesses will be similar. It does not, however, own the Braided Rivers building.

“The venues will still be there, they’ll still be running and offering services, it’s just that someone else will be counting the money,” Alister Lilley, trust board chairman

Currently the trust is likely to make a $108,000 loss from sales; if all five properties sell it anticipates as a landlord it will make a $1.2 million profit (both figures are before overheads).

“There’s no doubt we’ll make a solid profit under the new model,” Alister Lilley, trust board chairman, said.

Merger affects Ashburton staff

Twenty per cent of Aoraki Polytechnic’s Ashburton campus staff decided not to transfer over to the new institution CPIT Aoraki.

In November, it was announced that Aoraki Polytechnic would be disestablished and would merge with Christchurch Polytechnic

“I’m not reading anything into it other than it provided an opportunity.”

Of 139 Aoraki Polytechnic staff in total, 135 were offered to transition to the new organisation, however 14 chose retirement or

not to accept the offer.

Two people were made redundant due to duplicated roles and two roles were not required due to a programme with low enrolments not running.

TEU plans to have more of a presence in Ashburton this year to support students, staff and the community.

Learn to Swim programme in full swing

Ashburton’s Learn to Swim holiday programme is now in full swing at the EA Networks Centre.

Learn to Swim co-ordinator Stacey Hoets said more than 200 keen Mid Canterbury kids have enrolled so far, although there were still spaces available.

While the numbers are down on this time last year, which saw 280 people enrolled at the former Ashburton Community Pool-based programme, Mrs Hoets said enrolments were still flooding in each day.

“I’m hoping it’ll boost up by the end of the three weeks because we are running this week and the next two weeks as well,” she said.

While the location of the swimming programme has changed everything else remains the same.

It still offers group sessions for preschool and primary school-aged children and runs during the same hours.

Mrs Hoets said this year oneon-one private sessions have also proved popular with many opting for that, rather than the group-based sessions.

Ashburton house prices have risen 22 per cent since the market peak in 2007, one of the strongest price surges over the eight year period in the South Island.

The average current value of a house sold in the Ashburton District in December was $341,748, up 3.2 per cent over the past three months and up 4.1 per cent over a 12-month period.

While prices are rising at a faster rate than in many parts of the South Island, the district still remains relatively affordable, ranking 16th out of 32 territorial authorities.

At an average value of $776,671, Queenstown Lakes is the south’s most expensive real estate hotspot, followed by Christchurch’s hills suburbs, $653.696. The cheapest place in the South Island to buy is Clutha, $163,669 and Gore, $183,917.

Auckland continues to lead the charge in terms of high-priced properties with six areas now having average prices of $1 million plus. The most expensive home sold were in Auckland City, east, $1.373 million.

At $110,000 Kawerau continues to lead the country as the cheapest place to buy a house.

While the programme is targeted at children, the EA Networks Centre does offer classes for adults wanting to learn to swim.

Adults can attend individual lessons and adult classes run on Wednesday and Thursday nights during term time.

The holiday Learn to Swim programme will continue for three weeks before term time swimming lessons begin on February 1.

In the meantime, the pools are still open to the public with the larger pool operating lanes for recreational swimmers, while the smaller learners pool is closed between 9am and 11am each day to ensure there is ample room for the lessons.

The wait is over for Ashburton College student Annelise Diamond, 17, who received her NCEA results yesterday.

Ashburton College student Annelise Diamond was among thousands around the country who were able to access their NCEA results online yesterday.

The results were a reflection of a year’s worth of hard work culminating in exams sat by nearly 150,000 students from November 6 to December 4.

Annelise, who studied towards NCEA Level 2 last year, said she was disappointed to see on her computer screen yesterday morning that she was three credits short of passing the year with an excellence endorsement.

However, she realised that

one of her internal history assessments had been put in the system wrong, meaning she missed out on excellence in the subject and the year.

Once she cleared the confusion with NZQA, which would not be until their office opened on January 20, she expected her grade would be boosted up.

The 17-year-old found last year hard with studying English, maths, drama, music, history and performing arts, as well as participating in a number of shows including Grease and Blood Brothers outside of school time.

“Academically I think I did alright. I knew I could do it.”

However, she had been do-

ing performing arts since she was seven years old so had learned how to balance it with school life.

“Most teachers didn’t know that I was used to going and going and going.”

This year the 17-year-old will be studying English, Music, drama, history and media studies by video correspondence. She hopes to get an excellence endorsement for the third year running, but knows it will be harder this year.

One piece of advice she would like to give to students below her, would be that they should make the most of time given to studying – it was so much harder when left to the last minute.

Kids yoga and mindfulness workshop a success Mid Canterbury kids learned how to pause, breathe, smile and pose during a yoga and mindfulness workshop yesterday.

Michelle Smith-Copland of Carousel Kids Yoga and Mindful Mum Victoria Hood held the first of two sessions based around relaxing and concentrating in a creative environment.

Ms Smith-Copland said day one, held at the Methodist Church, was a success and the kids enjoyed themselves.

The workshop continued this morning at the Indoor Bowls Club.

While the workshop was a one-off, Mrs Smith-Copland said she was planning on running kids yoga classes during term time.

The classes are set to be held every Friday at 3.15pm at the bowls club.

Gulls find safer nesting spot

A super colony of critically endangered black billed gulls which has nested in the Ashburton River for several years has upped stumps and moved to safer breeding grounds.

In early September an estimated 4000 birds were settling in below the State Highway One bridge, but by the end of the month numbers had dwindled to a few hundred.

Environment Canterbury funded a Canterbury-wide aerial survey towards the end of November, which established the colony had resettled on a shingle bar at the Rangitata Rivermouth.

Forest and Birds’ Ashburton branch chairperson Edith Smith said the birds, designated as the world’s rarest gull, appeared to be thriving in their new surrounds.

“It is a clean shingle bar, with very little human intrusion and relatively predator-free,” she said.

Importantly, the area is also free of the weeds which plagued the Ashburton nesting site.

Last spring about 10,000 black billed gulls established a super colony in the Ashburton riverbed, however this season a proliferation of yellow lupins restricted the nesting areas.

“We just didn’t have the freshes necessary to flush the weeds out earlier in the spring,” Mrs Smith said. Ongoing human disturbance also created problems for the nesting birds. Some four-

Fire brigade callout Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade attended an arcing power line on Elizabeth Avenue, Rakaia, at 5.40am yesterday. Deputy chief fire officer Tyrone Burrowes said the crew spent about 30 minutes waiting for the power to be turned off before they could do anything.

The fire caused no damage.

St John ambulance An Ashburton man, aged in his 30s, was treated by St John ambulance following an alleged assault on Saunders Road at 4.34pm on Monday. The man was not transported to hospital as he only had minor injuries. St John Ashburton attended 14 medicalrelated incidents on Tuesday.

Gun shop theft Minutes after posting CCTV footage of a man stealing close to to $20,000 in military equipment on Facebook, Christchurch gun shop owner David Tipple was inundated with messages “naming and shaming” the alleged thief. The man was captured on camera, grinning as he stole a night vision head unit valued at $17,999. “Within 12 minutes of having it on social media we had the name of the guy,” Mr Tipple said. “When I went to bed last night we had 130 messages with people identifying him.” Mr Tipple said he passed the name on to police and believed they were investigating now.

Fatal car accident Three people have died in a car versus truck accident in King Country yesterday afternoon. Fire communications shift manager Colin Underdown confirmed three had died in the accident on Oparure Rd in Te Kuiti. He said three crew were called out to the incident at 12.52pm. A police statement said all three that died were travelling in the car – the truck driver was not injured.

The Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

Missing girl Police are looking for a 15-yearold girl who has been missing for two weeks. Lateisha Te Rangiuaia was reported missing by family members on December 29.

Police said she is likely to be in Whangarei or possibly in Auckland.

Kids cancer cruise

Signs designed by Ashburton Borough School pupils are now protecting endangered gulls at the Rangitata rivermouth.

“We estimated there were more than 3000 adults and a large number of chicks which suggests a successful breeding season,” she said.

“The site is ideal for the colony as unlike the smaller Ashburton colony, it is on clean shingle and

is relatively isolated from predators, vehicles and people.”

Signs created by Borough School students in a poster competition aimed at protecting the Ashburton gull colony have been replicated and placed around the Rangitata rivermouth.

Ten kids living with cancer got to spend time in the lap of luxury, aboard the 311m-long cruise ship Explorer of the Seas yesterday.

The group outing, for kids aged between 7 and 13, was organised by charity Camp Quality and participants were literally climbing up the ship’s walls, while some got to give surfing a go when they commandeered the sports deck on the 13th level. This is the third cruise season in which Royal Caribbean – the cruise ship’s owner – has worked with Camp Quality, an organisation catering for children living with cancer.

Extensions under way High demand for places and growing waiting lists has meant the summer shutdown has been building time at Hinds Preschool.

Owner Jo Luxton said her complex had been built to cater for up to 30 children and the extensions would only allow another five to come onto the preschool roll.

The preschool has been open for seven years and over that time Mrs Luxton said she had watched demand steadily increase to the point where having a waiting list was the norm.

While there was a steady outflow of youngsters heading for school throughout the year, any gaps were quickly filled from the waiting list, she said.

Body identified A body discovered at Dunedin’s Boulder Beach on Monday has been confirmed as 52-year-old Stephen Gourlay of Dunedin, who had been reported missing. An autopsy confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances to the death. Mr Gourlay went missing on December 20, when he was dropped off on Kaikorai Valley Rd at 8am.

Five people have been taken to Southland Hospital after a crash on Bluff Highway yesterday. Southern District Command Centre Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said the crash happened at 2pm when a Honda Accord and SUV collided.

The three women – one aged in her teens, one in her 20s and one in her 40s – suffered moderate injuries, while two children had minor injuries, he said. - NZME

Car rolls on highway A car rolled on the Hawke’s Bay Expressway yesterday and three people were injured. The crash occurred on the highway between Omahu Rd and Longlands Rd at 4.55pm. Police say it appears a Nissan Primera rolled and landed in a roadside ditch. Three people – an adult, a teenager and a 2-yearold child – were in the car. - NZME

Bomber kills 10 foreigners A suicide bomber has killed at least 10 people, most of them German tourists, in Istanbul’s historic heart, in an attack Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has blamed on Islamic State.

All of those killed on Tuesday in Sultanahmet square, near the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia – major tourist sites in the centre of one of the world’s most visited cities – were foreigners, Davutoglu said.

A senior official said nine were German.

Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said the bomber was believed to have recently entered Turkey from Syria but was not on Turkey’s watchlist of suspected militants.

He said earlier that the bomber had been identified from body parts at the scene and was thought to be a Syrian born in 1988.

Davutoglu said he had spoken by phone with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to offer condolences and vowed Turkey’s fight against Islamic State, at home and as part of the US-led coalition, would continue.

“Until we wipe out Daesh, Turkey will continue its fight at home and with coalition forces,” he said in comments broadcast live on television,

US Navy boats held by Iran Iran was holding 10 U.S. Navy sailors and their two small boats that drifted into Iranian waters after experiencing mechanical problems. Iran accused the sailors of trespassing but American officials said Tehran has assured them that the crew and vessels would be returned safely and promptly.

The sailors, nine men and one woman, were being held overnight at an Iranian base on Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf, and were expected to be transferred to a U.S. ship in the region on Wednesday morning local time. Officials said they believe the U.S. had spoken to one of the crew, and all 10 were fine and uninjured.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told The Associated Press that the Riverine boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the U.S. lost contact with them.

U.S. officials said that the incident happened near Farsi Island in the middle of the Gulf. They said some type of mechanical trouble with one of the boats caused them to drift into Iranian territorial waters near the island, and

The semi-official Iranian news agency, FARS, said the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s navy has detained 10 foreign forces, believed to be Americans, and said the sailors were trespassing in Iranian waters.

“We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned

promptly,” Cook said.

The incident came amid heightened tensions with Iran, and only hours before President Barack Obama was set to deliver his final State of the Union address to Congress and the public. The Lima Police Department posted two photographs of Donald “Chip” Pugh, 45, last week after a warrant was issued for his arrest when he failed to appear in court on a misdemeanor drunk driving charge. “He has not turned himself in,” Lt. Trust about to enter a brave, new world Sue Newman

shburton is in for one of the biggest business shakeups in its modern day history.

For more than 60 years the Ashburton Trust has been the supplier of hospitality venues in our district.

If you wanted food, alcohol or accommodation, chances are you bought it from a business owned and operated by the trust and run from a trust premises.

All that is about to change and the trust is putting most of its businesses on the market. It’s decided its future lies in being a landlord rather than a business owner.

For decades it’s done double duty on the hospitality front but now, it’s time for change and for a new evolution in its role as a community funder.

All credit to its board for realising that what worked in the past is not always the best model for the future.

Over six decades and more, the trust has served us well as the owner of hospitality businesses.

When it held a monopoly on liquor sales it didn’t take advantage of being the sole trader on the block by giving us a few substandard options, it ran some top class establishments.

When the public demanded a freer licensing environment where supermarkets could stock wine and beer and private individuals ran restaurants, the trust came into its own.

It reinvented itself as a slick business operator, opening new establishments and lifting hospitality options to a new level.

Now the trust is about to reshape itself again, this time almost turning back the clock by selling off its businesses and directing its focus to becoming a landlord.

The new format will ensure the trust does what it is charged with doing, investing money for the community and returning income from that money.

Right now it’s losing money on most, if not all of its businesses.

That doesn’t mean the businesses it’s selling off are not profitable. What it means is that the trust’s overheads and the very nature of doing business as a trust come with costs and accompanied by regulations that don’t come into play in the private sector.

The business sell-off is a brave move, but it’s the right move.

hat jumping bean David Seymour (DS), Member of Parliament for the leafy and affluent suburb of Epsom in Auckland, has been giving the electorate at large the benefit of his thoughts, accompanied by relevant numbers, on the everthorny, controversial, potentially life-ending practice of smoking.

A copy of the totally unsecret document involved, has conveniently fallen into my hands and I have, at once, felt an urge to share it with you. (But then that’s me all over).

Mr Seymour is concerned by the scourge of smoking and the damage it can still do.

Basically, he argues, despite successive governments’ attempts to curb it, the habit/ addiction is alive and “well” and being funded by those who can least afford it – Maoris and “the poor”.

Every January, for the last six, the price of cigarettes by government decree, has risen inexorably until two weeks ago it reached the eye-watering cost of $25 for a packet of twenty.

However, if you are an addict, as many still are, such a price is by no means the deterrent it is assumed to be.

It simply means those who are hooked on the infamous weed turn to Plan B (or C and D), cut their expenditure on commodities that matter and continue to indulge in the cancer-crippling custom, thereby creating those many children who live in the sort of poverty by the details of whom we are currently bombarded, when they clearly need not.

As the cost of smokes rises and rises, the addicts will respond accordingly until, presumably, it reaches the levels of some of the more “must have” drugs, such as cannabis and much worse, which will then change hands for astronomical “street” prices amidst also rising violence and eager gang involvement.

Now a few figures to give weight to the theory.

2010, the overall proportion of the population smoking regularly, despite the doubling of the tax take in those years, went down more slowly than in the previous five.

Thus the overall percentage is now15 per cent with the Maori total a substantial 35.5 per cent.

During that time, the government revenue from the cigarette industry has rocketed up from $1068 million in 2010 to $1507 million in the year ending a fortnight ago.

So, the Government has done very nicely, thank you. Which only goes to show smoking is addictive and irrational and the diehard – and I use the word advisedly – and the people so afflicted will not stop to calculate the cost of their overwhelming dependence on the breath-destroying gasper.

Cynically, it is they on whom the Government, in its turn, depends to ensure the steeply

mounting tax revenue climbs ever higher. Mr Seymour then gets in a shot at the Maori Party, despite its support of the same administration to which the Epsom MP can be relied on to give his vote.

He refers us to the fact the Maori smoking rate has fallen much more slowly than the average. Fewer Maori have quit the habit and are now actually subsidising non Maori via those huge tobacco taxes they are paying.

The Maori Party, points out DS, which has been from the start, enthusiastically behind this “higher price” policy, has scored an own goal.

The final conclusion to all this has to be that tobacco taxes have taken significant amounts of money from those who can least afford it and for little benefit.

Like all policies that do more harm than good, annual increases in the tax on cigarettes in particular and tobacco in general

should be stopped.

No doubt you can see holes in Mr Seymour’s contention but it’s now out there for everyone to chew over and express an opinion on, perhaps even by way of an electronic communication to the editor of our paper.

Meanwhile, a tremor of anticipation runs through the nation as talk of a visit from The President of the United States (aka “The Most Powerful Man in the World”) is drip fed to us, the humble citizens of Aotearoa.

On everyone’s mind, the question; which golf course will Mr Key choose for himself and Mr Obama to play their obligatory 18 holes?

Green keepers throughout the land are working feverishly to ensure it is their lay-out that gets the Prime Ministerial nod. I am quietly confident our PM will “shout” the President his round.

We golf aficionados are on the very edge.

Electric vehicles good for NZ – study

BY PATTRICK SMELLIE Electric vehicles have the capacity to make a dramatic impact to the carbon footprint of New Zealand’s passenger vehicle fleet, with potential for greater gains as the country’s already high renewable electricity production levels increase, says the first life-cycle assessment of EVs undertaken for the New Zealand market.

Prepared for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority in a project involving the Australian arm of international consultancy ARUP and an Australian electric vehicle consultancy, Verdant Vision, the study concludes that an EV’s carbon dioxide emissions over its life cycle, including its manufacture and disposal, represent an average 60 per cent reduction on emissions from petrol and diesel vehicles.

When just driving in New Zealand is counted, EVs will emit around 80 per cent less CO2 than their internal combustion enginedriven equivalents, the study found, with the CO2 emissions from petrol engines outstripping both diesels and EVs.

The study compared cars driven by fossil fuels with cars powered either entirely by an electric engine or which combined a fossil fuel engine with the ability to plug the car into mains electricity to charge its battery. That assessment would improve if New Zealand moved from

New Zealand property values rose 14 per cent in 2015, with the annual pace slowing from a peak in November, as regulatory curbs imposed by the Government and central bank took the steam out of the Auckland market, according to state-owned valuer Quotable Value.

The average value of a New Zealand home rose to $558,146 in December from $488,674 a year earlier, accelerating from the 4.9 per cent increase in 2014, QV said.

Values rose 2.9 per cent in the three months through December, slowing from the 4 per cent pace in the three months through November.

Property values have been underpinned by a hot Auckland market in recent years, where rapid inbound migration and a shortage of supply has pushed up prices.

That prompted the Government and the Reserve Bank to introduce new measures to quell the risk from a housing bubble. The central bank introduced Auckland-specific lending restrictions in November, while the Government’s more stringent enforcement of taxing speculators’ capital gains began in October.

“With various government and Reserve Bank restrictions now beginning to take effect, and foreign buyers apparently much less active, our expectations are that Auckland values will drop a few per cent over the next few months,” Core-

Logic research director Jonno Ingerson said in a statement. “While Auckland may take a breather, the surrounding areas are likely to rise, driven both by local demand and by Aucklanders choosing to live in affordable locations.”

Massey University research on Tuesday showed New Zealand housing affordability improved in the final three months of 2015, helped in part by stalling Auckland prices, though low interest rates were seen as potentially bidding up prices.

The QV data show Auckland region values rose 4.1 per cent in the three months ended December 31, for an annual gain of 22.5 per cent. At an average value of $933,264, Auckland values are almost 71 per cent above the previous 2007 peak.

QV national spokeswoman Andrea Rush said the “massive increases” in Auckland values through the first nine months of the year were at a rate that hadn’t been seen since the early 1990s, and encouraged investors to look outside the country’s biggest city for potential purchases.

“This resulted in an increase in activity and demand in previously slow housing markets in upper and central North Island centres including Hamilton, Tauranga, the Waikato district, Hawke’s Bay, Whangarei and Rotorua,” she said.

Values in Hamilton rose 20 per cent in 2015, while Tauranga was up 18 per cent.

Wellington region values rose 5.1 per cent in 2015, Christchurch city values increased 2.6 per cent, and Dunedin values were up 5.7 per cent in the year.

Trust keeping eye on farmer

In the face of a tough year for many farmers, the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust is keeping a watching brief.

The trust operates a 24/7 service, with an 0800 number which is answered locally.

“You are not talking to a call centre, if people call in the Mid Canterbury calling area the calls come to our phone,” trust manager Sue Baird said.

“If we are away it diverts to our cellphone, we’ve just updated our posters and information to reflect this.

“If people are feeling fragile it can be hard to make that first call; they often don’t want to deal with a call centre.”

Mrs Baird also stressed the trust was there to support rural communities per se.

“We are not just there to support farmers, we are there for farm workers, partners, family members and anyone else with concerns. It could be people going onto a farm who have concerns or neighbours who think something has changed,” she said.

As the season wears on the impact of the low dairy payout was now being compounded by the effects of the impending el nino weather pattern, causing stress for some farmers.

So far the predicted drought has not been as severe as many people anticipated with some decent rainfalls around the Christmas New Year period, and to a lesser extent this week, but the district averages are still down.

“It certainly is tough but by and large most people seem to be coping pretty well,” Mrs Baird said.

“We are keeping an ear to the ground and constantly building on our resources.”

A number of initiatives are already under way within communities to ensure people know support is available, and they are not alone in what they are dealing with.

Groups such as Rural Women have organised meetings and community get-togethers, and rural professionals have been meeting to discuss how best they can support clients.

“By its very nature farming is an isolated profession, so it’s great to have any opportunity to get together and chew it over and help one and other understand there’s various ways of dealing with things which they may not have thought about,” Mrs Baird said.

Notwithstanding the fact that many farmers are struggling, a lot of the inquiries the trust is currently dealing with are coming from the dairy sector.

“When times get tough and so many dairy farms are in corporate ownership the pressure comes on from the top and it filters down through the various levels of staffing on the farm – that can create problems in itself,” she said.

“There’s more pressure coming on people to perform, to do more and to make decisions. That’s something we are keeping a fairly close eye on, fortunately at this stage we are not aware of too many major problems – there’s the odd one which has popped up but we have been able to deal relatively quickly.”

Spotlight on dairy cattle nutrition A conference centred on the nutritional requirements of dairy cattle will be held in Ashburton next month.

Hosted by the New Zealand Association of Ruminant Nutritionists, the Profitable Dairy Farming Conference will bring together a group of innovative farmers who will present information about nutrition, farm management and profitability.

Based on overwhelmingly positive feedback from the North Island event held in 2015, the South Island conference has been organised to meet increasing demand for knowledge and awareness in dairy nutrition and feeding.

Speakers include some of the country’s most experienced nutritionalists.

Topics will cover aspects of grazing, feed intake, feeds, feeding and efficient utilisation to optimise performance.

Charlotte Westwood will discuss how to get cows to eat more by Diurnal grazing pattern, Pablo Gregorini will talk about understanding strategic management. Jakob Kleinmans will speak about getting the best value out of forages and Trish Lewis, ensuring your silage is fit for purpose.

Other experts in the speaker lineup include Natalie Chrystal (growing great cows: rearing heifers from weaning to calving), Nigel Meads (condition management – how does it help fertility), Andrea Murphy (nutrition and management of close up dry cows) and Julian Waters (feeding supplements and practical feed balancing).

TINWALD SALE The prime lamb price at Tuesday’s Tinwald sale remained on par with recent weeks.

Heavy woolly lambs made $97-$105, medium weights $87-$95 and lighter lambs $75-$83.

Medium weight shorn lambs made $70$87.

Heavy woolly ewes earned $69-$75, medium weights $62-$67 and lighter sheep, $46-$56.

Reasonable numbers of prime ewes were offered and prices remained steady. Limited numbers of predominately smaller lamb fetched $23-$55.

By Justin ChadwiCk India’s refusal to accept the Decision Review System came back to haunt them as George Bailey and Steve Smith posted match-winning centuries in Australia’s fivewicket win at the WACA Ground on Tuesday.

Chasing 310 for victory, Australia were in trouble at 2-21 in the fifth over after Aaron Finch (8) and David Warner (5) fell cheaply to debutant paceman Barinder Sran.

But a 242-run partnership between Bailey (112 off 120 balls) and Smith (149 off 135) helped lift Australia to 5-310 with four balls to spare in front of 14,992 fans.

The partnership was the fourth-highest stand by an Australian duo in ODI cricket.

Australia should have been 3-21 when Bailey - facing his first

ball - gloved Sran’s leg-side delivery to the wicketkeeper.

But India’s appeals fell on deaf ears with Richard Kettleborough adjudging it not out.

And with India steadfastly refusing to allow the use of DRS in any games they’re involved in, it meant Bailey was off the hook.

Hot Spot replays showed a faint brush of Bailey’s gloves, while snicko registered a noise as the ball passed the gloves.

Bailey emphatically made the most of the reprieve to set up the series-opening win, crunching seven fours and two sixes in his match-winning knock.

Smith was even more brutal in posting his highest ODI score, eclipsing his previous best of 105.

But he was out in the last over when he chipped a catch to cover when just two more runs were needed for victory.

Sran finished with 3-56 in an

impressive debut, and it would have been even better with the help of DRS. Australia’s debutant pacemen didn’t fare so well.

Victorian Scott Boland was economical early.

But some full tosses at the death proved mightily costly, with the 26-year-old conceding 30 runs from his final two overs to finish with 0-74.

Paris showed promise but lacked the killer punch on the way to 0-53 off eight overs.

Josh Hazlewood led the bowling brilliantly in the absence of pace stars Mitchell Starc and James Pattinson.

After conceding 11 runs in a wobbly first over, the 25-yearold rebounded strongly to finish with 1-41 from his 10 overs.

Indian opener Rohit Sharma struck an unbeaten 171 from 163 balls to spearhead the visitors’

3-309. Sharma combined with Virat Kohli (91 off 97) for a 207run stand.

The partnership was India’s highest-ever second-wicket stand against Australia, eclipsing the 199 set by Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman in Indore in 2001.

Sharma’s knock was also the highest score by a visiting batsman against Australia in Australia since Viv Richards’ 153 not out for the West Indies at the MCG in 1979.

Australia all-rounder Mitch Marsh, who will be rested from the second one-dayer in an attempt to nurse his body through the series, grabbed at his troublesome hamstrings a few times throughout India’s innings.

But he stayed out on the park to finish with 0-53 from his nine overs, before making an unbeaten 12 with the bat.

George Bailey set to make floppy hat cool again

By Justin ChadwiCk George Bailey wants to make the yellow floppy cool again, and he’s urging his teammates to join in on the fun.

Bailey’s canary yellow, widebrimmed floppy hat became an instant hit on Tuesday when he donned it for Australia’s five-wicket victory over India at the WACA Ground.

One fan was so taken by the hat they even started a twitter ac-

count for it, calling it: @GeorgeBaileyHat. White, wide-brimmed hats are commonly worn in Test cricket.

But baseball caps are the norm in ODIs and T20s nowadays.

Bailey finds that a tad boring, and he’s urging others to join him on the floppy bandwagon.

“I imagine in 10 or 15 years the coloured floppy will have the same sort of significance as the baggy green,” Bailey said with a big grin.

“I think there’ll be youngsters growing up wanting to don the floppy. It’s got that sort of power.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a few more boys not wearing one in game two.

“We’ve been pushing it for years to bring back the floppy.”

And just to prove he’s across all styles of hat fashion, Bailey threw his support behind the super absorbent, Terry Towelling bucket hat commonly worn by fans.

“It’s a fabric that isn’t used

enough, not just on the sporting field, but in general,” Bailey said.

Bailey believes the floppy yellow has some sort of mystical powers.

And it certainly worked wonders for the 33-year-old on Tuesday when he plundered 112 to lift Australia to a 1-0 lead in their series against India.

With the floppy starting to take flight, don’t be surprised to see a slips cordon full of them when Australia take on India at the Gabba on Friday.

India captain MS Dhoni believes his side are getting the raw end of the deal from umpires as payback for the team’s ongoing refusal to use the Decision Review System.

The powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are continuing to block the use of DRS in any games involving India – and it’s starting to hurt. Australian batsman George Bailey should have been out for a golden duck in Tuesday’s ODI at the WACA when he gloved a delivery through to the wicketkeeper. But with the umpire giving Bailey not out - and no DRS available for the game - India simply had to accept the decision.

Sevens squad for nationals

The Mid Canterbury Sevens team has been announced for this weekend’s national tournament in Rotorua.

Only three players – Greg Spence, Seta Koroitamana and Nete Caucau – return from the 2015 side, with some new young additions hoping to make an impact.

Mid Canterbury qualified for the nationals in fourth place at the Southern Regional Tournament at Timaru in November.

The Hammers qualified behind Otago, Tasman and Canterbury,

with South Canterbury finishing in fifth and Southland failing to progress for a second successive year.

Coach Mark Cousins said he was hoping to improve on last year’s 14th place finish and was confident his side had the pace and power to perform well.

“There are only three returning from last year’s nationals so we lose a bit of continuity, however we have a well-balanced team with plenty of attacking ability,” he said.

plenty of turnovers with loose forwards Spence, Nick McKain, Kirk Chettleburgh and Koroitamana all named in the 12-man squad.

Cousins said playmakers Nathan McCloy and Nathan Goodwin continue to improve while Malu Falaniko will offer pace in abundance and strong finishing ability.

“Our game is based on a high work rate and sustained pressure, both attacking and defensively,” Cousins said.

“I am comfortable with the whole squad and will be balanc-

ing the game time to keep everyone fresh. There will be every opportunity for a player to make an impact.”

Sonny Bill sheds 3kg during training camp By michael Brown Sonny Bill Williams will sit out this weekend’s nationals but will probably play in the upcoming Wellington Sevens as he chases his ambition of winning Olympic gold in Rio. Williams and Liam Messam are the only World Cup-winning All Blacks to target an Olympic spot and Williams spent the past three days in Cambridge in camp under coach Gordon Tietjens. He admitted he had already shed 3kg as a result of the gruelling training regime.

Messam will return to New Zealand from Japan later this month, but is familiar with sevens having won gold at two Commonwealth Games. Ti-

etjens said Messam could play in Wellington, but the Sydney event on February 6-7 was a more realistic target.

Tim Mikkelson was yesterday named captain of the New Zealand side for the remainder of the world series in the absence of the injured Scott Curry (shoulder) but most interest was in Williams’ progress in his transition from 15-a-side rugby.

He spent time with Curry as he attempts to learn the vagaries of the game, especially as Tietjens plans to use the 30-year-old in the forwards.

Tietjens, though, won’t rush his introduction to the world series, especially because he knows the attention Williams will receive.

“He’s really nervous and we want to give him time to grasp all the information before we put him out there,” Tietjens said.

“He could be in Wellington, and will more than likely be in Wellington. Remember, we are playing very experienced teams in the world series. We want to make sure he’s really ready to go.”

He should be able to adjust, given he’s gone from league to rugby and back again twice as well as dabbling in professional boxing.

“I have confidence that I will be able to pick it up eventually,” Williams said.

“I know I have a lot to learn and know where I’m at, but I

have faith in my ability and what I can bring to the table.”

It will be Tietjens’ job to juggle the available resources.

There aren’t as many All Blacks as first thought when sevens was added to the Olympic programme. Most have prioritised the All Blacks jersey over the prospect of Olympic gold, but the likes of the Ioane brothers, Akira and Reiko, as well as Ardie Savea are also in the mix.

The New Zealand sevens side have endured a difficult start to their world series campaign, and are in the unfamiliar position of seventh ahead of the third round after being hit by multiple injuries, but Tietjens has plenty of firepower to call on.

Rams on the move The St Louis Rams are moving to Los Angeles after National Football League owners voted to approve their relocation efforts and gave the San Diego Chargers the option to join them. The Rams’ proposal to relocate to a planned $US1.85 billion facility in Inglewood, roughly 16km from downtown Los Angeles, was approved by owners by a vote of 30-2 according to a report on the NFL’s website. French press applaud Carter A French rugby journalist says the “Dan Carter effect” has turned Racing 92 into the best club side in Europe.

Laurent Depret, writer for RMC Sport, told Radio Sport’s Martin Devlin on The DRS that Carter has had a big influence on fellow New Zealand players at the Parisbased club who sit on top of the Top 14 table.

“Gold booter ... he’s gold pure gold. He’s fantastic.”

“How many games has he gone unbeaten? Seven games at the World Cup plus five games of Champions Cup and Top 14. He’s a sun, he’s more than a star. In France he’s a true star now. There is a Carter effect.”

“All the players are shifting their level of play. Casey Laulala is fantastic, he’s playing great because Dan Carter is here. Chris Masoe is the leading figure of the forward pack. Big Ben Tameifuna as well ... Joe Rokocoko. It’s fantastic what Dan Carter is doing to the club.

Masoe was named man-ofthe-match after Racing 92’s 3410 win over the Glasgow Warriors at the weekend which leaves the club top of their pool in the European Cup. Carter kicked five from five shots at goal in the victory as his 12 points helped his side maintain their unbeaten run in the competition.

The controversial owner told reporters last week that Nonu, who joined the Top 14 club after winning his second Rugby World Cup title, was not yet a “lost bet” but had produced some “disappointing” performances for the club. While ahead of Sunday’s win over Bath, Boudjellal said in Le10sport that Cooper’s performances were being not “at the level for which we have recruited” .

Laurent Depret said Boudjellal has always been the “black belt of punchlines”.

“It’s very rude to say with Wilkinson we had foie gras and

with Cooper we have pâté but it’s too strong to be true,” Depret said on The DRS. “It’s just the way for Mourad Boudjellal to be in front of the scene and have the spotlight on him, even if he is very angry and upset with the poor performances in a row by Quade Cooper for instance.”

Depret said Boudjellal will aware that Nonu, who joined the Top 14 club after winning his second Rugby World Cup title last year, needs time to get to his usual standard.

“For Ma’a Nonu he knew, when he signed him, he’d need games just to understand how to play

with Toulon or to play with several fly-halves because it is not easy.

“I’m not worried for Ma’a Nonu. I’m a bit more worried for Quade Cooper.”

Boudjellal is known for calling out his players in pubic and Depret said it often works.

“The reaction is usually strong on the pitch. Everything will be in order within two weeks.”

Toulon remain in the race for the Top 14 title, currently sitting fourth on the table, and are still alive in the European Rugby Champions Cup after Sunday’s win over Bath.

Kyrgios quits Kooyong with foot injury set 7-6 (7-5) and was trailing 3-2 in the second when he said he couldn’t continue.

Kyrgios, who last week steered Australia to the Hopman Cup title, initially called for a medical time-out when he was down 3-2 in the first set.

He said he was worried about the tennis he had coming up.

The trainer came out again three games later after Kyrgios had broken back although he didn’t treat the injury.

The Canberra product’s mood wasn’t helped by the sweltering conditions and some questionable line calls.

He took a 6-3 lead in the tiebreak before Goffin fought back

to trail 6-5. The world No. 30 then sealed the set with an unplayable serve down the centre line.

The trainer came out again at 1-1 when Kyrgios complained he could still feel the injury, and he told him he would play until another change-over and at that stage decided to forfeit the match.

Mid Canterbury fell to a first innings loss against Invercargill Metro on the opening day of the South Island Primary Schools’ Cricket Tournament in Dunedin on Monday.

Mid Canterbury lost the toss and Invercargill Metro elected to bowl first at Tonga Park.

Guatemalan police have arrested fugitive former national soccer federation president Brayan Jimenez in connection with the corruption probe into world governing body FIFA. Police said they detained Jimenez in an apartment building called Torre Sol in an affluent neighbourhood of Guatemala City. He was due to appear in court to be formally charged. Guatemala’s prosecutor’s office previously said it received an order from the Foreign Ministry to proceed with the extradition of Jimenez to the United States once apprehended and had released an arrest warrant for him.

Newcastle sign Shelvey Newcastle United have signed England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City on a five-and-ahalf-year deal, the English Premier League club said yestersday. Parker cops punches ahead of Samoa bout In preparing for his fight against southpaw Jason Bergman in Samoa a week on Saturday, Kiwi heavyweight Joseph Parker has unintentionally worn more punches than in any other training camp.

Parker’s battle with American Bergman in Apia, which will be screened live on pay per view television, has been tagged “Rumble in Paradise”, but the South Aucklander’s recent four-week camp has been anything but.

An elbow injury and lower back problem which have been aggravated at Parker’s Las Vegas base are other issues for him and trainer Kevin Barry to deal with as the 24-year-old looks to continue his rise up the ranks, but it’s Parker’s defensive lapses as he adjusts to a new style which might be the most concerning.

“He’s been hit with more punches during this training camp than ever before,” Barry said. “He wants to go to the right but against a southpaw you have to go to left.

“It’s made me a little concerned because I like to be prepared.”

Bergman (25-11-2) has won 17 of his last 19 fights but is unlikely to seriously threaten Parker, who has a perfect 17-0 professional record.

The fight is the focus but Parker is also looking forward to a muchneeded break before preparing for bouts in April and July which he and his camp hope get him near a mandatory challenge in a division in a state of flux following the defeat of Wladimir Klitschko.

“This is our sixth fight in 10 months,” Barry said. “It’s a lot to ask and we’ve had very little down time. Joe’s body is telling him at the moment ‘I need a break’.

“In the three years we’ve had he’s been lucky with injuries. He’s had a shoulder problem and we had an eye scare for a start, but in this particular camp we had the niggles right throughout.”

Parker, ranked in the top 10 in the WBC, IBF and WBO, isn’t the only one feeling the pinch. Barry said he would undergo surgery

two days after the fight on two hernias which have been aggravated by the constant pad work he does with the powerful Parker and heavyweight stablemate Izu Ugonoh.

“Some days it is really rough in training and other days fine,” Barry said.

“I have taken a pounding to the body in the last 12 months by Joe and Izu. Body punching is a big part of my skillset.”

While a break is within grasp for Parker, the Samoa trip holds a special appeal.

“I’m feeling sore and my body needs a break but this is a fight I’m looking forward to,” he said.

“My parents were born in Samoa and I travel there every year to visit the family and friends so it’s nice to get back there and thank everyone for their support.”

The 31-year-old Bergman, who has sparred recently with WBC champion Deontay Wilder, is seen as the perfect opponent to get Parker used to southpaws.

Endurance athlete Braden Currie spoke to locals at the EA Networks Centre last night about his rise to success in New Zealand and overseas.

The 29-year-old talked of his path from Methven to becoming a national champion with an Olympic dream and the tools he used to overcome the challenges of a top endurance athlete.

“A lot of the direction is focused towards inspiration for

youth, to get out there and give anything a go,” he said.

Currie said he hoped the evening inspired those in attendance to pursue their individual goals.

“I’m not a big person on endorsing exactly what I do, not everyone wants to be an endurance athlete,” he said.

“It’s more about that there’s going to be challenges that we’ve got to face and choosing a path that excites you and makes you happy.”

Umaga, appointed as Kirwan’s replacement in June following a disastrous season which reaped three victories and 13 defeats, has been impressed with West’s recent development, and in particular the skill and mental strength he showed in kicking the last-minute conversion for Hawkes Bay to win the Championship final against Wellington last year.

West, who turns 24 on Saturday, became the incumbent under Kirwan last year, playing 15 matches as the Blues limped to second-tolast place on the table.

His rivals for the jersey were Simon Hickey and Dan Bowden, both of whom have signed with offshore clubs after being deemed

by Umaga as surplus to requirements.

While West played well in patches, he will want to play a more dominant role in 2016 and an early endorsement from Umaga should help.

Kirwan’s strategy during his troubled three seasons in charge was a constant competition for

places which left some players down on confidence and unsure of their place in the side. In 2014, Hickey, West, Benji Marshall and Chris Noakes were all tried in the No10 jersey.

This year, West will be vying with the inexperienced Matt McGahan and Piers Francis for the first-five spot, and the expectation is for him to take control on and off the field.

“Ihaia West is the guy who has been in Super Rugby for three years,” Umaga said yesterday. “I was very impressed with him in last year’s ITM Cup. The growing of Ihaia [could be seen] in that kick to win the game. Some people

have had issues with Ihaia’s mental temperament – being able to handle pressure situations. I just thought his game had grown in the ITM Cup. “He is the senior 10 there so it’s his job to lose at the moment ... but everything’s open.”

Umaga, taking time out from leading his team in their pre-season training activities, was wary about promising much in his first season – another big difference to the relentlessly positive Kirwan.

West’s halfback partner is likely to be Bryn Hall, who will have Billy Guyton and 19-year-old Sam Nock as his rivals for the position.

Umaga said: “I know [Hall] didn’t have such a good 2015 but I have

talked to him about 2014 when he was very good and how he can get back to that.”

The Blues’ World Cup-winning All Blacks, prop Charlie Faumuina and skipper and loose forward Jerome Kaino, have been training with the team, with Japan-based players, flanker Tanerau Latimer and utility back Male Sa’u, due to arrive in a fortnight.

Midfielder Rene Ranger, back at the Blues following his stint in France, has yet to resume contact training following neck surgery.

Umaga is hopeful Ranger will be available for the team’s first game against the Highlanders at Eden Park on February 26.

Sport Dray takes it to the next level

Lewis Dray kicked off 2016 in style at the opening round of the New Zealand Superbike Championships in Ruapuna last weekend.

The 19-year-old rider competed in the 250 Production Championships on his LCD Racing Kawasaki Ninja, winning his first and third races and narrowly finishing behind Aucklander Jacob Stroud in the second.

Dray’s main competition crashed while struggling to adapt to new tyres in his third race, but the former Ashburton College student managed to stay on his bike to take the chequered flag.

Dray said he enjoyed the high level of competition and surpassed even his own expectations by winning the prestigious New Zealand GP title in his last race of the weekend.

“It was absolutely brilliant, the first race was really good, I couldn’t have written it any better,” he said.

Dray will now hope to maintain his fine form in the coming rounds, but is also exploring the possibility of competing in a newly-formed competition across the Tasman in February on a Yamaha 320.

“It’s a new class that’s starting in Australia, after these first three rounds of the nationals we’ll decide whether we will go or not,” he said.

Dray, who emigrated to New Zealand from England with his family 10 years ago, is also eyeing a return to the British Isles to compete in the Manx Grand Prix, which has been raced annually in the Isle of Man since 1923.

“Maybe in 2017 or 2018 going to the Isle of Man, that’s my dream to go over there, so if that became a reality that would be even better.”

Dray will next be in action in the remaining three rounds of the New Zealand Superbike Championships in Invercargill, Timaru and Hampton Downs.

Wahab Riaz leads Pakistan’s quality fast attack

He will form part of a quality fast attack for Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand and will present the hosts with fresh problems after the generally pedestrian pace of the Sri Lankan bowling, Dushmantha Chameera the honourable exception.

“We are going to be a differ-

ent bowling challenge,” Riaz, a regular up around 150km/h, said yesterday. “We have experienced and quality bowlers, so it is not going to be easy for New Zealand’s batsmen. We will attack them. We cannot sit back and see what they are doing.”

While admiring the New Zealand’s cricket of late, and the hitting of the likes of Martin Guptill and Colin Munro, Riaz is confident Pakistan can match their 2009 performance when they

beat New Zealand 3-2 in their six-game ODI series.

Riaz, 30, took eight wickets at 18 apiece in that series and has taken 11 at 28 overall against New Zealand. His pace and ODI record – 93 wickets in 67 games – demands respect.

“It’s definitely a great weapon for me and I am working hard on it. I try to be consistently hitting 145-150km/h, and if my rhythm is good I can go much higher.”

Riaz is relishing the idea of

playing alongside fellow left armer Mohammad Amir after his five-year absence and is sure Pakistan have the goods to trouble New Zealand with players such as the canny veteran Umar Gul, here for the T20 leg, and the giant left armer Mohammad Irfan, who pitches up for the ODI matches.

“Definitely Amir is a great addition to the team. He’s getting a chance, he’s a great fast bowler, he has proved that in the past

and it’s time for him to prove it again.

“Probably with him here there’s less pressure on me as a bowler because getting his support, plus Umar Gul is back so it’s going to be a good combination for Pakistani cricket.”

As for New Zealand’s batsmen, “it seems like cricket is very easy these days for them because they are hitting the ball really well.”

Something Riaz and co are aiming to stop.
