Residents back hydroslide BY SUE NEWMAN

Many Ashburton District ratepayers say they want the biggest and best hydroslide complex available for the EA Networks Centre, just-released details of a ground-breaking survey reveal. But whether they get what they want – and when – is in the hands of Ashburton District councillors who will decide tomorrow whether the project will make its way into next year’s budget, as part of the district’s 10-year long-term plan. The council last year surveyed residents to find out what

they wanted in terms of a recreational water facility in the EA Networks aquatic centre, how much they were prepared to pay and who should foot the bill. That survey gave what might be considered a clear mandate to councillors to go all-out to ensure the aquatic centre had the best facility available as soon as possible. More than 74 per cent of the 1645 people who responded said it was important or very important to have a hydroslide in the centre. When it came to the choice of water rides cost was no deterrent, with 42 per cent saying

they wanted two hydroslides (one being a signature ride) that would come with an estimated $2.5 million price tag. Five options were given. That response was enough for mayor Angus McKay, who yesterday said he would support slotting the hydroslide into next year’s budget. But his support comes with a big question mark around the costs ratepayers are prepared to accept. “The survey tells me people want it now so that means year one. “I’ve got an open mind on this but I want the people to know

the cost of it for each ratepayer. “It’s my opinion that we’d put it in year one to see if people are willing to pay the costs, but we need a number of submissions saying ‘yes, we’re willing to pay’.” The community’s willingness to tolerate additional rates to pay for the facility and its running costs would be the ultimate test that would decide which year of the long-term plan it was finally slotted into, he said. “I want people to see the costs on their rates; without them it’s not fair to ask them to make a decision.”

Each individual property in the district currently pays $169 a year for the EA Networks Centre. This will rise to $195 a property next year. The cost of operating a hydroslide would be additional and is estimated to add between $12 and $20 to rates for each property. This will be on top of the rates required to operate the EA Networks Centre.
