Nearly five years after the tragic incident that put Ashburton’s Work and Income (Winz) office in a temporary location next to the Ashburton Police Station, the Ministry of Social Development are close to finalising an agreement for a permanent location. “We’re happy to say we’ve identified a preferred new location, and are close to finalising an agreement on this,” general manager of properties and facilities Vaughan Crouch said. “While it was important for us to make progress on finding a suitable long-term location for our Work and Income office in Ashburton, we wanted to carefully

consider any potential permanent sites to ensure they were the best fit for the community, and our staff and clients safety was protected.” Crouch attributed the long time to reaching this point to due to a combination of the property market conditions in Ashburton, and the work involved in fully understanding the new requirements for the site. “We’ve been fortunate the set-up at our temporary site next to the police station has worked well in the meantime and our staff have appreciated the added degree of security knowing police are next door,” he said. “We’re also thankful for the support of both the Ashburton Police and the Ash-

The Tancred Street building is now occupied instead by Child Youth and Family.
