Nearly five years after the tragic incident that put Ashburton’s Work and Income (Winz) office in a temporary location next to the Ashburton Police Station, the Ministry of Social Development are close to finalising an agreement for a permanent location.

“We’re happy to say we’ve identified a preferred new location, and are close to finalising an agreement on this,” general manager of properties and facilities Vaughan Crouch said.

“While it was important for us to make progress on finding a suitable long-term location for our Work and Income office in Ashburton, we wanted to carefully

consider any potential permanent sites to ensure they were the best fit for the community, and our staff and clients safety was protected.”

Crouch attributed the long time to reaching this point to due to a combination of the property market conditions in Ashburton, and the work involved in fully understanding the new requirements for the site.

“We’ve been fortunate the set-up at our temporary site next to the police station has worked well in the meantime and our staff have appreciated the added degree of security knowing police are next door,” he said.

Crouch said that while they are looking forward to letting their clients know their new location, commercial sensitivity limits them on what more they can disclose about what properties or locations are being considered.

It appeared in early 2017 a permanent solution had been found with purpose-built offices on Tancred Street, however, security concerns were raised

by Winz staff in relation to the number of exit points in the building.

The Tancred Street building is now occupied instead by Child Youth and Family.

Teenager falls down cliff

Mum injured protecting young child

A teenage boy has been taken to hospital in serious condition after falling down a cliff at Bucklands Beach.

The boy was transported to Middlemore Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter after suffering multiple injuries from the fall yesterday afternoon.

An Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust spokesman said inten-

sive care paramedic Chris Deacon attended to the teenager on the cliff edge.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew waited on the top of the cliff at Musick Point waiting while Deacon worked on the boy.

It then relanded on the beach to collect and transport Deacon and the patient to Middlemore Hospital just before 5pm.

Police were first called to the incident just before 3pm.

A police media spokesperson said a man had fallen off a cliff at Musick Point. A St John media alert confirmed four of its vehicles attended the incident and treated one patient. The patient was in a serious condition from an extreme fall, the alert said.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) spokesman said they were going to use a stokes basket to get the man into a position where he could be winched up by a helicopter.

The position of the tide had meant a sea rescue was not possible, he said.

■ LOWER HUTT FIGHT

Shotguns, machetes used in fight Eyewitnesses report seeing shotguns and machetes used in a large fight in Stokes Valley, Lower Hutt yesterday.

Social media users said the fight took place on George Street near Delany Park and gunshots were heard by members of the public nearby.

One woman said the fight took place near the intersection of Speedy Street, on the road and in a park.

“Huge group fighting in the park and over the road. Shotguns and machetes. Quiet now but still wouldn’t risk it,” the woman wrote.

Another woman said she saw about a dozen gang members fighting and heard “bangs” but didn’t see any firearms.

However, the woman did see some gang members armed with machetes during the incident.

A police spokeswoman said police were responding to a disorder incident in Stokes Valley.

“Police are responding to a disorder incident in Stokes Valley.

Police were called about 3.45pm.

No further information is available at this stage,” she said.

a couple of medical incidents over the weekend, while Rakaia firefighters assisted ambulance crews with a suspected heart attack and dislocated ankle yesterday.

A mum travelling on a bus involved in a fatal crash with a car was with five young children and put her body on the line to protect the youngest.

Intensive care paramedic Chris Deacon was among dozens of first responders who rushed to Gowing Dr in the Auckland suburb of Meadowbank after an Audi car and a bus from the Go Bus company collided at 11.30am on Saturday.

Deacon said five children, aged between about 2 and 7, were travelling on the bus during a “day out” with an adult who was mum to three and looking after the other two.

Deacon said the mum was injured in the crash as she tried to protect the children.

“She protected the baby with her own arm, so she had some quite bad bruising.”

One child on the bus was sent to hospital to be assessed, Deacon said. “[The child] was sucking on an ice-block so looked reasonable content, but was quiet, and had gone skidding along the floor of the bus, so went to hospital to be checked.”

Residents on the suburban street rallied together to assist the injured.

Geoff Parmenter was at home when he heard a “big bang”.

“At first I was not sure what it was. Then I went outside and saw all of the neighbours – it was a bit crazy.”

Parmenter offered his covered driveway as a temporary relief shelter to the injured.

“We were just keen to help out, there was not much else we could do, really.”

A young man died and 10 others were injured in the crash.

Deacon, who is from the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, said the male driver of the car, who he believed was aged in his late 20s, was quickly found to have died in the crash.

Three billboards get good response

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon is pleased with the response his signs alongside State Highway 1 produced, but says he will not be stopping until the road is upgraded properly.

The signs were erected on December 22 and had remained in place for the height of the holiday period, until a few days ago, said Falloon.

Falloon said the feedback he received overall was positive, receiving more than 200 phone calls and emails. “I’m really pleased with the response locally,” he said.

“While they were up I received more than 200 emails and phone calls, many telling their own stories of near-misses they’ve seen or been part of.

“A lot of people mentioned their concerns around passing lanes and people speeding up towards the end of them to overtake which was interesting.”

Falloon said he believes locals are appreciating the work they are doing in attempting to make the second most dangerous stretch of highway in the country for serious injuries and fatalities less dangerous.

“I hope it makes them (the government) take notice, and that they will remember and keep this in mind when NZTA makes their next round of funding allocations,” he said.

The signs that went up just outside of Ashburton over the holiday period have received a positive response said Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon.

Govt announces package to make highways safer Rumble strips, safety barriers and wider shoulders will be installed as part of a road safety package to improve rural highways in Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu-Whanganui and the West Coast.

The next stage in the Safety Boost Programme – $20 million to upgrade 670km across 11 rural state highways – was announced yesterday morning by Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter.

“The Boost Programme includes simple safety upgrades that can be installed quickly over the summer period, such as rumble strips, roadside safety barriers in high-risk locations, shoulder widening, and improved signage,” Genter said.

The targeted highways did not

have the highest levels of traffic, but were full of risky sections such as sharp corners and narrow stretches, she said.

Rumble strips can reduce fatal run-off-road crashes by up to 42 per cent, while shoulder widening at high risk sites can reduce serious crashes by up to 35 per cent.

“All drivers make mistakes from time to time. Safety improvements like these stop simple mistakes turning into tragedies,” Genter said.

Work on the upgrades will start today and aim to be finished by July.

Genter said these improvements would be additional to the 870km of upgrades in the Government’s $1.4 billion Safe Network Programme for high-volume state highways, which hopes to save 160 lives and serious injuries by 2021.

Safety Boost has already made

upgrades – including almost 2000km of rumble strips, 30km of road safety barriers, and lower speed zones for high-risk intersections – to roads in Northland, Taranaki, Manawatu-Wanganui, Otago and Southland.

The road toll was 379 in 2018, the highest since 2009 and much higher than in 2013, when it was 253.

Last April, Genter said the Government would look at adopting a target of zero deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads.

She said at the time that the target would be “audacious”, but all road deaths and serious injuries were avoidable.

The Government has not formally adopted a zero target, and it will be part of a consultation process on road safety that will take

place in March and April.

Genter, who has said it would take decades to see a substantial reduction in road deaths and serious injuries, has verbally clashed with the National Party over the best way to improve road safety.

Last election National promised eight roading projects – including Mill Road in South Auckland, Auckland’s east-west link, and a Napier-Hastings four-lane expressway – saying they are crucial to save lives and improve regional economic development.

The party has been pushing for the projects ever since, including delivering eight petitions – signed by more than 16,000 people supporting the highway projects – to the transport and infrastructure select committee.

Rivermouth survey still open If you care about the future of the Ashburton River mouth, there’s a survey running online that will let you have your say.

The Ashburton zone team has a project under way that looks at the ecological, cultural and recreational values of the area.

It plans to develop a management strategy to protect them.

So far more than 100 online and on-site surveys have been completed and many people have said they frequently return to the rivermouth because it is quiet and peaceful.

People also commented on the magnificent views from the mountains, over the river and to the sea and the variety of bird life that thrives around the area.

Many local fishermen, who were present at the rivermouth and talked to Environment Canterbury staff members, are hoping for improved water quality and higher fish numbers in the future.

Environment Canterbury’s Ashburton Zone delivery lead, Janine Holland, said the team was excited by the opportunity to have a closer look at how the community connected with the rivermouth.

“After receiving a wide variety of anecdotal feedback on the rivermouth over the years it is great to talk directly with local people about their values and concerns for the area.

“Enhancing and protecting areas with high natural values and creating areas that will benefit the community for generations to come is a key priority for the Ashburton Water Zone Committee and this strategy will help deliver this,” she said.

The Ashburton zone team would like anyone who regularly spent time at the Ashburton River mouth to participate, either through the online survey or by talking to staff who are regularly on both the north and the south sides of the rivermouth.

The survey closes on January 30 and, once feedback has been gathered, the management strategy will be developed in consultation with river users, runanga, landowners and stakeholders.

A survey is being undertaken to gain people’s views on the ecological, cultural and recreational values of the Ashburton River mouth area.

Vineyard event a New Zealand first

In a New Zealand first, two summer pleasures are being mixed together.

Lone Goat Vineyard in Burnham is hosting a wine race through the vineyard on January 19.

It combines exercise, fancy dress – if that’s your thing – and the key ingredient for many, wine.

Entrants will run or walk around the course, stopping for a wine tasting every 1km, sampling a range of Lone Goat wines.

“It’s a first-time event of its type in New Zealand,” race organiser John Moore of CJM’S Events said.

“We took it off the model of the Bordeaux marathon (Marathon du Médoc) where they run a mara-

thon and drink a glass of wine every mile.”

The Lone Goat Wine run isn’t quite as indulgent.

There are options, do one 5km lap or, do two laps to complete 10km – and taste (a 20ml sample at each stop) all the wines twice equating to a modest half a bottle of wine by the finish line.

Moore said they have allowed two and half hours to do the 10km – that’s 15 minutes per kilometre – which was an achievable time limit for any fitness level.

Moore said they had to jump through a few hoops for clearance to run the event and were excited to see how it unfolded.

It is non-competitive event with

the only requirement being entrants must be at least 18 years old.

People have to enter in teams of at least three, designating a sober driver, or registering for the bus ride home to one of six drop-off locations.

After the race there will be a souvenir wine glass for each entrant which they can use to sample some more wine while they enjoy the food and live entertainment at the after -party.

When the event was launched, Moore said they had over 4000 people interested and, as of Thursday, 370 had registered to race.

With entries closing on Sunday night, Moore was hopeful they could get 500 to the start line.

■ WETLAND PROTECTION

Freshwater mussel habitat protected Work is under way to protect the habitat of freshwater mussels and native fish in two wetlands in the Hinds area.

Freshwater mussels, typically found in small, fast-flowing streams, are under threat in New Zealand due to a loss of habitat.

A small population of the mussels has been found in the upper Hinds catchment in a stream in the Swamp Grass wetland.

This eight hectare area is cov-

ered with silver tussock, carex and other native plants that provide shelter for native species along the stream margins.

The plants’ growth has been stunted due to stock grazing and funding from the Ashburton Water Zone Committee’s Immediate Steps fund will help to fence off the area to help it regenerate.

A second wetland on the property will also be fenced off to protect the native plants carex and toetoe.

■ FLIGHT TRAGEDY

Boy’s death ‘heartbreaking’ A passenger on board a flight on which a young boy died has described the heartbreaking moment the child started to panic half an hour into the journey.

The woman, who asked not to be named, was travelling with her partner on the Samoa Airways OL732 flight from Auckland to Apia on Boxing Day. About 30 minutes after takeoff, a young boy seated with his parents started panicking, she said.

“The boy and his parents [initially] did sit somewhere in the

middle or nearer to the front of the plane.

“But after he started panicking, the flight attendants told the parents to bring him to the back of the plane.”

She said as the situation escalated, staff worked to help the boy.

“The flight attendants were amazing. They did everything they could,” the passenger said.

“The co-pilot or the pilot came down to see the situation – I thought by then the plane would land at the nearest airport. How-

ever, it still did not.”

The woman described harrowing scenes as staff tried in vain to save the boy.

“I saw the boy’s feet turning blue every minute and when the flight attendant brought the boy to his mother – so she can properly say goodbye to him – I saw the lifelessness in the boy’s eyes.”

The female passenger said she was not speaking out about what happened that fateful day to criticise anyone.

However, she wanted to understand why the plane did not

make an emergency landing or return to Auckland – particularly as the child started showing signs of distress not long into the flight.

She also expressed how difficult it was for other passengers after the event.

Samoa Airways is the stateowned flag carrier airline of Samoa.

The airline said family members later revealed that the boy had a medical history that had not been disclosed to the airline prior to the flight.

Fisherman dies A fisherman has died in the Bream Bay area south of Whangarei.

Police were called to Ruakaka after the water incident yesterday. They were called to the scene at 7.06am after a fisherman appeared to get into difficulty while retrieving fishing nets. The man died at the scene. A St John spokeswoman said another person was transported to Whangarei Hospital in a moderate condition. - NZME

One person has died after a serious crash on State Highway 3 near Inglewood, Taranaki. The incident took place on Mountain Road (SH3) and emergency services closed the road as a result.

Initial indications suggested one person was seriously injured and another person was moderately injured. It is not understood if one of these people have died. A police statement said the Serious Crash Unit would examine the scene. “Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash on Mountain Rd, Inglewood, New Plymouth. The road is closed, with diversions in place,” the statement said. New Zealand Transport Agency reports the crash took place near the intersection of SH3 and Durhan Road.

Car smashes into house “We got most of the damage. It was quite dramatic and is still crazy to believe,” McLaren said yesterday.

“I think I’m still trying to come to terms with everything.”

She had recently had part of her silver birch tree chopped down after the last storm, and believes if that had not happened, the outcome could have been a lot more serious.

“I’m just glad there were no bodies left lying around.”

McLaren said she felt police should not have engaged in the pursuit inside the city.

Inspector Matthew Broderick said about 1.15am on Saturday two officers attempted to stop a speeding vehicle.

“The vehicle failed to stop and crashed into a fence on Oliphant Street.”

Broderick said two occupants of the vehicle were injured and taken to hospital and a third person from the vehicle was still being sought.

“The pursuit lasted less than a minute and based on the information available to me, proper procedure was followed by the officers involved.

“No complaints have been received however if any resident is concerned about the incident they are encouraged to contact police.”

A Hastings resident is reeling after high-speed police chase ended in her garden, causing extensive damage.

During the early hours of Saturday morning, Irene McLaren woke to what she thought was a “bomb” going off.

Instead, a car, with what she said were four young men had become airborne, crashing through three houses on Oliphant Road, before coming to a stop.

In its wake was a pile of destruction, with fence palings and debris scattered on the ground.

Police and a dog squad arrived shortly after.

McLaren said two of the men were apprehended at Ebbett Park, while the other two were hiding in a house three doors down, leaving a trail of blood.

The side of her house copped some damage, which should be covered, bar excess, by her insurance.

However, her $7500 caravan, which she is not covered for, has been written off.

McLaren said she had spent a year renovating both the interior and exterior, and only had a top coat to go before needing to register it.

“The caravan spun around. From the impact, it split everything from the frame and it can’t be replaced.

Storm blankets US A massive winter snowstorm has blanketed most of Missouri and several other Midwest US states, snarling traffic and contributing to at least five road deaths.

The storm moved into Kansas and Nebraska from the Rockies on Friday, then east into Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana, covering roads and making driving dangerous.

A highway near St Louis was blocked for several hours on Saturday, and at one point the Missouri State Highway Patrol warned of traffic delays as long as eight hours.

Interstate 65 were closed for hours Saturday after a semitruck jackknifed along the snow-covered highway near Lafayette, about 105km northwest of Indianapolis.

The storm was expected to spread east into the Mid-Atlantic region, with between 7cm and 15cm of snow expected in the Washington area, including parts of northern and central Maryland, by Sunday.

Missouri had gotten the worst of the storm by Saturday, with the National Weather Service reporting more than 30cm of snow Saturday morning in some places around St Louis and Jefferson City.

“We’re anticipating still more snow

through today, so we’re asking motorists to stay home until the roads are cleared,” said Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt Collin Stosberg, stationed in suburban Kansas City.

“If you do have to get out on the road, we’re asking you to do three things: Have your cellphone fully charged, wear your seat belt and slow your speed for the conditions.”

Missouri troopers responded to more than 3000 calls for help through early Saturday afternoon, including more than 700 crashes and 1300 stranded vehicles.

China coal mine collapse kills 19 Handgun seized from 6-year-old A news agency says 19 miners were killed when a coal mine collapsed in northern China.

The official Xinhua News Agency says rescuers are looking for two miners who still are missing following the disaster yesterday

A handgun has been confiscated from a kindergarten pupil in the US who was walking into school, police say.

Police in Columbus, Ohio said someone reported that the boy appeared to have a heavy object in his pants.

They did not disclose whether the gun was loaded when it was safely taken from a six-year-old pupil at Columbus Africentric Early College.

A photo shared by police showed bullets with the seized firearm.

Police said the boy will not be charged because he is so young.

They are investigating where he got the weapon.

WBNS-TV reported that the principal said in a letter to parents the student “will face appropriate discipline” but did not specify what that would be.

Principal Tyree Pollard reiterated the Columbus school’s zero tolerance policy on weapons and urged families to talk with children about keeping such items out of schools.

Two dead in bakery blast

Two firefighters have been killed and dozens have been injured in a blast at a Paris bakery that was apparently caused by a gas leak.

Ten people are in a critical condition and 37 others are less seriously injured, the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed.

French Interior Minister Christophe Castener paid homage to the courage of rescuers who saved the life of one firefighter who was buried under the rubble for two and a half hours.

Paris prosecutor Remy Heitz said, “at this stage we can say it seems from accidental origin, this would be a gas leak”.

The massive blast gutted the ground floor of a building in central Paris’ shopping district, shattering nearby storefronts and rocking buildings.

The rapper pulled out of both Coachella and New York festival the Governor’s Ball when they failed to meet his characteristically outlandish demands.

Just two days before Coachella cofounder Paul Tollett was set to announce Kanye West as one of the headliners, West asked Tollett if he could construct a giant, custom-built dome in the middle of the festival grounds especially for him – rather than have the rapper perform on the main stage. However with only four months to build the dome, the festival declined.

Art gallery’s summer programme popular

Ashburton Art Gallery visitors have been occupied with a most unusual dilemma these school holidays.

It is the mystery surrounding just what a snark looks like and how to draw one.

“It’s a snail-like creature, but no-one knows what it looks like,” said new gallery staff member, Sarah Davidson.

The business and communications assistant and her colleagues have been inundated with crowds of art lovers young and old.

They have been viewing the David Elliot exhibition Snark: A Victorian Odyssey and entering a drawing competition and trail running alongside the exhibition.

The trail involves finding posters in shop windows around town and then filling in a form of clues to lead to the final destination featuring a loot box.

There has been about 40 entries submitted, and there is another 40 or so in the process of being completed.

There will be a draw from all entries and the winner will receive a signed David Elliot book.

The drawing competition involves giving over one’s imagination to what a snark might look like.

While thought to be a creature with the characteristics of a snail and the ambitions of a shark, it can also undergo metamorphosis to become its more lethal

Keep alert for idiots on our roads I

hope this doesn’t jinx things, but Rakaia volunteer firefighters have had a quiet beginning to the New Year.

They’ve so far been spared serious crashes, despite the huge volumes of traffic on State Highway 1 over the past three weeks.

Hats off to the Rakaia lads and all our volunteer firefighters for their work over the holiday season. There was no shortage of idiots on the road and their dangerous driving had the potential for carnage.

I was on the highway too, headed south. The traffic was heavy and most drivers were paying attention, going with the flow of the traffic.

Some were not. Some were admiring the lupins on the side

of the road just north of Tekapo … it would have been safer if they pulled off the road first.

Some were towing caravans at 140km/h in passing lanes.

There will always be idiots and they are the hardest to deal with. It is actually easier to alter a road, add signs, rumble strips and other alerts to make the idiots drive in a different way.

Safety treatment is proposed

for the section of State Highway 1 between Dunsandel and Ashburton and it can’t come soon enough.

Government has just announced $20 million will be spent on rural highways in other parts of the country with work beginning today. Hopefully it won’t be too long before our local stretch of highway gets similar treatment.

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon says his signs drawing attention to previous hopes for a four-lane highway generated some 200 phone calls and emails, many people telling their own stories of near-misses.

The New Zealand Transport Agency says head-on crashes account for 70 per cent of deaths

on that particular section and have suggested flexible centre safety barriers, which would catch vehicles that left their lanes.

Rumble strips, special turnaround areas and changes to intersections are also proposed.

The final plan has yet to be seen but the agency has received plenty of feedback from those who use the roads regularly.

No matter how the road changes, there will still be idiots and it will remain for the rest of us to keep alert for them.

So if some fool cuts you off in the passing lane, back off and keep your distance instead of riding his bumper for the next five kilometres. Chances are you will sit alongside him at the traf-

fic lights at Rolleston, when you can glare all you like.

Or if a slow-poke is driving at 97km/h, then just wait for a safe spot to pass – it will only cost you a minute or two in the long run.

Being patient and driving to the conditions (be that heavy traffic and idiots) is still the most important rule for survival.

I’d rather be late arriving than not at all.

When is it not an election year?

W

e say it every year, but 2019 will be a big year.

We have three massive World Cups to look forward to look forward to: cricket, netball and rugby, all where we stand a decent chance.

Internationally, my eyes will be glued to the Brexit process, and the increasing likelihood we’ll see the UK crash out of the European Union without a substantive deal in place.

At the time of writing the Government shutdown in the United States is still ongoing, now the longest in history.

The fact that Donald Trump has lasted as long as he has surprises many.

Even if he does survive, in 12 months he’ll be back into full campaign mode against a rapidly increasing field of Democratic challengers, and potentially some from within his own Republican party.

If you think elections roll around quickly, you’re not wrong. After all, our own next General Election is next year.

was some chatter around Parliament of extending the term from three years to four. I’m not so sure.

Ultimately I’m a democrat. I believe in and trust the wisdom of the population to make the right call.

Granted, sometimes those decisions might not go our way, but we accept them and move on.

In a Parliamentary democracy the election process is of fundamental importance.

We don’t regularly have binding referenda, so an election is the only concrete opportunity New Zealanders have to dictate to politicians what should happen. To, as an infamous Australian politician once said, “keep the bastards honest”.

The idea of extending out the period to four years, making that opportunity less regular, does make me nervous.

Some politicians are of the view that a three-year term is too short because in the first year you’re getting your head around what to do, in the second you’re actually doing the work, and in the third you’re off campaigning again.

I don’t subscribe to that. Politicians shouldn’t need trainer-wheels. Members of Parliament should be ready to hit the ground running when they arrive after an election.

The same is true for new Governments.

Time in Opposition should be spent working on new policy and planning for what to do when you’re in Government.

It’s what we in the National Party are in the midst of now.

What we don’t want is the situation the current Government find themselves.

Having not done that work in their nine years in Opposition, now having to contract 215

working groups at a cost of nearly $300 million to the taxpayer.

There are some benefits, of course.

A four-year term might lead to better planning, and possibly even politicians looking more to the longer term.

And it’s true that an election every three years does mean less time for considering and passing legislation, as MPs close Parliament to go off and campaign.

So too does the public need a rest from us, and from the overwhelming coverage the TV media apply to the campaign period.

A four-year term would, if not decrease the intensity, certainly reduce the regularity.

Unfortunately this year won’t be much of a break – we have council elections in October.

The northern lights is just one of a multitude of attractions to entice people to hop on to a cruise ship this year.

Just cruising into 2019 Egypt

W

hile the country is rebounding from a tourism slump that began with 2011’s Arab Spring, and this year luxury lines are returning to Egypt, meaning your World Cruise or Middle East itinerary will actually stop there rather than just pass through via the Suez Canal.

Ocean lines such as Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Oceania Cruises, and Silversea will call on Safaga, with access to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings – albeit on a dusty 124-mile bus transfer from the Red Sea through the desert in the spring and fall.

River lines are exploring farther afield, stopping not just in Cairo and Luxor, but in archaeologically spectacular Aswan as well.

Not only are ships returning to places that have been perceived as politically sensitive in recent years-such as Turkey and Egypt-they’re also heading on increasingly remote voyages, to places that feel like the ends of the Earth. Phoenix into the record books

After starting their A-League campaign slowly the Phoenix have now gone unbeaten in their past eight games – a new club record.

Their latest result came in the form of a 3-2 win over the Central Coast Mariners at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Saturday night.

The Mariners had endured a terrible start to the season with two draws and nine losses from their previous 11 games, but the Phoenix didn’t make it easy for themselves.

They needed three second half goals to get the job done as they toasted club legend Andrew Durante’s 300th A-League appear-

ance, the most by any player in competition history.

The opening exchanges didn’t go to plan for the Phoenix and they found themselves down 1-0 after only eight minutes.

Mariners forward Matt Simon, now in his third stint with the club, was fouled by Phoenix defender Steven Taylor and then made no mistake from the spot to convert the penalty.

The Mariners won seven corners during the first 13 minutes, which gives you an idea of the pressure they applied to the Phoenix.

That pressure eventually told as Andrew Hoole made a gorgeous run to latch onto a Jacob Melling pass to double the advantage.

Playing without their usual midfield due to the suspensions of Alex Rufer and Mandi, the Phoe-

nix looked lost in the centre of the park. Melling and Matthew Millar were having their own way on the ball as the Mariners enjoyed the run of the race during the opening 30 minutes.

Michal Kopczynski and Mitch Nichols were charged with plugging the gaps in the midfield for the Phoenix and they weren’t able to stamp their mark on the contest.

Nichols may have been short of a gallop given he last started an A-League match in round four in November.

It was the substitution of Nichols at halftime for new recruit Cillian Sheridan that sparked the turnaround in fortunes for the home side.

Jordan Murray nearly stole a late leveller for the Mariners but it was ruled out as he was offside.

The playoffs are still a long way in the distance but the Phoenix know they’re heading in the right direction under Mark Rudan’s coaching.

Two out of three ain’t bad

By Liam Napier The mere fact Noeline Taurua is prepared to be satisfied with two wins from three matches in the Northern Quad Series illustrates the nature of her rebuild job.

Not so long ago the Silver Ferns would walk into a series such as this – the three test examination against hosts England, Australia and South Africa in Liverpool and London over the next week – with the belief, if not expectation, they would emerge victorious.

Instead, after a year in which the Ferns won eight of 21 tests and fell to one of their lowest ebbs, expectations have swiftly been redefined.

Two wins from seven under

Taurua is hardly a glowing start but it also reflects the shattered group she inherited.

The Netball World Cup, six months away in Liverpool, is the ultimate aim; where judgment will be passed on whether Taurua delivers on her long-held promise or not.

She knows this.

Between now and then, Taurua continues the task of restoring pride to the black dress.

Watching the Ferns capitulate at last year’s Commonwealth Games, where they failed to win a medal for the first time, Taurua thought she knew what needed to change.

Involved as a player and assistant coach previously, she had

clear comparisons. Yet only after assuming the reins was the true depth of the problems facing New Zealand netball revealed.

“Not until you get in there do you know the reality,” Taurua said after her 12-strong squad touched down in England.

“We have to prioritise the areas we have to work on instead of trying to save the world,” Taurua says.

“This tour is really important for us. I’ve had different personnel over the last three series and I’ve got a better handle on all those players that will be available for the Worlds.

“This tour is about us putting some wins on the board and putting out a game that’s as dominant

as we can. That’s going to be a big measure as to what 2019 is going to be for us.”

This Quad Series may provide the yardstick but there is little time to make any advances.

Once the Ferns return home they have only the domestic season and three Taini Jamison tests – against yet-to-be-confirmed opposition – before the World Cup. And vast improvements need to be seen now.

“When you put numbers out there you put yourself on the line but if we can come out with two out of three wins here I will be really happy. But if we put out a level of dominance and learn from what we experienced in the Quad and Constellation Cup of last year

– and we’re very clear about what those lessons are within the team – and we show improvement I will be happy as well.

“We have to put something out there that shows we’re in contention for Worlds, not only for the opposition but more for ourselves in regards to our own confidence and knowing we are progressing.

“I’ve put out there within the team, two out of three.

“Obviously there’s a question, why not three out of three?

“We haven’t beaten England since I’ve been around, we’ve only beaten Australia once, so we need to get one of those scalps to meet that objective and we need to be able to put ourselves under pressure.”

Federer mulls retirement After Andy Murray’s emotional retirement interview, Roger Federer is thinking about how his career might end.

Ahead of his Australian Open title defence, the Swiss maestro doesn’t have any specific time in mind but at 37, he can sense he’s closer to the end of his career than the beginning.

Speaking with CNN, he said he feels for Murray who’s hand has been forced by persistent back and hip injuries.

“I hope it doesn’t end with an injury,” Federer said.

“I’d like to go out on my terms.

“I don’t have the fairytale ending in my head saying there has to be another title somewhere, and then I have to announce it big and say, that was it, by the way, guys.

“I don’t have to have it that way.”

Federer, who won three of his 20 major titles in the past two years, has had incredible longevity in the sport with 21 seasons at the top level.

However, he has had to deal with his own share of injuries with back issues in 2013 and a freak knee injury in 2016 that led to surgery.

With Murray just 31, Federer hopes to continue to remain healthy to be able to leave on his own terms.

In fact, he said the perfect farewell may have already passed.

“If I wanted it that way, I could’ve maybe said it after the Australian Open [in 2017] when I beat Rafa in that epic final.

“I don’t know if it’s ever going to get better than that, because that was it for me.”

He also told CNN he will not do a farewell tour with former coach and childhood idol Stefan Edberg advising against the move.

But the end is on his mind with Federer wondering whether he would like to go out in the place he’s won eight Grand Slam titles.

“I have a lot of places that are very special to me, thankfully.

“I’ve been very fortunate.

“But yeah, sure, like a Wimbledon stands out as maybe a place, but there are actually also many others,” said Federer.

“I’ve been thinking about it, like where is that place? “But I think it will all come down to, is it the body, is it the family, is it the mind, is it one morning when I wake up, how does it happen?

“And then maybe that day that it happens, maybe that is the end, or maybe I say I can maybe get a few more tournaments left in me, I don’t know.”

In an interview with The Age, Federer said he was hit hard by Murray’s retirement and seeing him struggling. ‘’You want somebody to go there and feel like he’s happy to retire,” Federer said.

“The problem is it’s not his decision, it’s the body’s decision and that naturally hurts.’’

Will Serena be serene?

After Murray’s retirement, he only had one thing on his mind.

“Yeah, of course is very bad news,” Nadal said.

“Will be a very important loss for us, for the world of tennis, for the tour, for the fans, even for the rivals that he have been part of a great rivalry between the best players for a long time, and a great competitor.

“But being honest, when somebody like him, that he achieved almost everything in his tennis career, is suffering like he’s doing for such a long time already, probably he does the right thing for his mental health.”

Nadal has missed long peri-

ods of tennis because of injuries throughout his career, still managing to amass 17 major titles, but has never contemplated a date for retirement.

“I didn’t arrive to that point. I am a positive guy.

“I always had the feeling that we’ll fix it,” he said. “But, of course, there is periods of time that you don’t see the light. Is tough.”

Federer has credited improvements in travel, in nutrition and in life balance for giving modern tennis players the ability to extend their careers well into their 30s.

He was 35 and coming off a long injury lay-off when he revived his career with an Australian Open title in 2017.

He successfully defended the title last year, his 20th major.

Nadal’s plan for longevity revolves around playing fewer tournaments and resting whenever he has persistent injuries.

That became less of an option for Murray, who is contemplating further surgery just to cut down on the pain that he feels when he’s doing such simple things as putting on his shoes and socks.

“But he’s 31 – 10 years ago, if he retired at 31, we will say he had a great and very long career,” Nadal said.

“We will miss him. But today is him. Tomorrow another one.

“We are not 20 anymore.

“Our generation, everyone is more than 30.”

Stunning turnaround

When Mid Canterbury’s cricketers arrived at the Ashburton Domain oval yesterday morning for day two of their Hawke Cup match against Otago Country, they weren’t exactly brimming with confidence.

In fact, they thought they’d possibly be dead and buried by lunch.

They could never have imagined that by the end of the day they’d be all smiles, with a 106run win to their names thanks to a couple of remarkable performances from two of the side’s youngest and least experienced players when it came to Hawke Cup cricket.

But that was exactly what happened and Mid Canterbury cricket coach Garfield Charles was almost lost for words after Alex Hooper knocked middle stump over to claim the final wicket of an action-packed match.

But he said much of the credit for the win had to go to Richard Turpie and Archie Redfern, whose individual performances set the wheels well and truly in motion.

Redfern was making his Hawke Cup debut and recovered from a duck in the first innings to notch up 64 with the bat in the second innings, while Turpie – in his second Hawke Cup game – took eight second innings wickets to

go with the three he took in the first innings.

When you considered the fact that play in the two-day Hawke Cup zone match didn’t even start until 1.30pm on Saturday due to drizzle in the morning, it was actually an incredible match from the first ball to the last.

All up, 23 wickets fell on day one.

Redfern then combined with Deon Biggs for a last-wicket partnership of 39 – of which Biggs contributed none – to see his side through to 161 and set Otago Country 142 to win.

Then it was Turpie’s turn to shine.

They went from 7/0 to 9/8, with Turpie taking seven of those eight wickets, including a hat-trick in a quadruple-wicket maiden eighth over.

Otago Country had been the form team of their Hawke Cup zone this season, so Mid Canterbury headed out into the field for the visitors’ second innings with nothing to lose.

it yesterday (Saturday) and it got easier to bat on today (Sunday), and the boys showed if you spent some time in the middle it got easier,” Charles said.

Had Otago Country’s batsmen been able to spend a bit of time in the middle in their second innings, the total of just 142 to win was well and truly achievable.

But Mid Canterbury’s bowlers just didn’t give them the chance to spend that time in the middle.

Charles said it was the first game in his Mid Canterbury Cricket tenure where the team had managed to take 12 points from a Hawke Cup match, and it meant that now all Mid Canterbury needs to do to earn themselves a Hawke Cup challenge in a few weeks’ time was get a first-inning win over North Otago in Oamaru this weekend.

Mid Canterbury cricket stalwart Bob Bruhns was the scorer, as he usually was, for the weekend’s game and he said Turpie’s 8/13 in the second innings, and his match figures of 11/39, were Mid Canterbury’s best ever against Otago Country.

He surpassed the efforts of Matt Tait – who was also playing at the weekend – who took match figures of 10/50 against Otago Country in 2013.

When Smith will actually return to cricket is unclear at this stage, with Cricket Australia confirming on Saturday the dumped batsman would spent an extended time on the sidelines after injuring his elbow during the Bangladesh Premier League. Probabeel grabs favouritism The intrigue around the upcoming Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) took another twist at Ellerslie yesterday where exciting filly Probabeel laid claim to the favourite’s tag for the rich two-year-old dash on January 26.

The Brendan and Jo Lindsay-owned Savabeel youngster launched a devastating late sprint to take out the NZB Insurance Pearl Series sponsored 1200m contest, in the process downing stablemate Yourdeel, also a Karaka Million candidate.

Trained by Jamie Richards from his Matamata base, Probabeel had been impressive when winning at Ellerslie at just her second race-day start last month.

Sent out the warm favourite for Sunday’s contest off the back of that run, Probabeel looked to be

in a little trouble approaching the home turn when still a fair way off the pacemakers in the eighthorse field.

Bosson took the filly to the outside to make her challenge, where she joined in over the last 100m to storm to victory by a head from Yourdeel with Hasstobegood a neck further back in third.

Bosson was impressed by the performance of Probabeel although it has left him with a dilemma on which horse he will ride in the Karaka Million, as he is also the regular pilot of Aotea Lad who tops the order of entry for the event.

“We got a bit off them and it took a bit to wind up but that last 100m was awesome,” he said after the race. “I wasn’t too worried as I managed to get out into the three-

“She just took a little while to wind up so maybe a set of blinkers might be going on for the Karaka Million.

“There are some lovely horses I get to have the choice of (for the Karaka Million) so it’s exciting times.

“I think this one is right up there as she has done nothing wrong so far.”

Owner Brendan Lindsay admitted he was left a little dumbfounded by the win after believing his filly had too much to do in the concluding stages of the race.

“I thought she had no show as she looked like she might run third at best with 50m to go,” he said.

“Opie sort of waited until his moment, which he had to, but I will have to watch it again as you know what it’s like when you get excited.”

Bookmakers reacted swiftly to the result as they installed Probabeel as the $2.60 favourite for the Karaka Million on their Fixed Odds book, ahead of the unbeaten Whiskey Neat ($3.60). - NZME

Bjorn Baker ended Magic Millions day on a high after Redouble ripped a fortune from bookies at the Gold Coast. At one stage in betting, Redouble’s price plunged from $8.50 into $3.80 before drifting late to $6 as support arrived for other runners. He led all the way on Mrs Zippy, a horse he had paired with in amateur drivers’ races six times previously, including for a second at Cambridge late last month. It took him a decade to record that elusive first win in the cart.

Ritchie takes cautious approach Trainer Frank Ritchie is taking no chances with stable star Dawn Patrol in the buildup to the rich Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie later this month.

Ritchie had the Dawn Approach gelding down to contest a three-year-old 1600m event at Ellerslie yesterday as his final leadup event before the Classic but withdrew him after he spiked a temperature following some light work at Cambridge on Saturday morning.

“We worked him in the morning and when he came off the track, he just hadn’t

put in like we thought he should,” Ritchie said.

“It wasn’t anything major, but we got the vet to him and he found the horse had a slightly elevated temperature.

“We got some blood tests done as well and they didn’t show anything, so I guess in layman’s terms, you could just call it a stomach ache or similar.

“He was as good as gold by the afternoon, so I don’t believe it was anything serious, but it was enough to see him withdrawn from Sunday’s race.”

What looked like almost certain defeat was turned into one of the most remarkable wins in Mid Canterbury Cricket’s history yesterday, and a youngster playing in just his second Hawke Cup game was the man to thank.

Richard Turpie, 18, produced an unbelievable spell of bowling against Otago Country at the Ashburton Domain which featured a quadruple wicket maiden – including a hat-trick – and finished the game with figures that well and truly earnt him a spot on the Mid Canterbury Cricket honours board.

His 8/13 was Mid Canterbury’s new best, surpassing Bevan Ravenscroft’s 8/23 in the 2013/14 season.

When the game finished and Mid Canterbury’s players and supporters began celebrating an incredible 106-run win no one thought would have been possible a few hours earlier, Turpie’s achievement was still sinking in.

It was easily the best bowling of his career, with the best before that being 6/22, and it came at a time when his team really needed it.

Having been bowled out for just 64 on Saturday and then bowling Otago Country out for 83, Mid Canterbury started day two at 38/3 and after losing more quick wickets, weren’t confident. But a knock of 64 from debutant Archie Redfern helped Mid Canterbury through to 161 all out.

Otago Country needed 142 runs to win and had a fair few hours to do it.

“Obviously it wasn’t many runs for them to chase, but considering the way the wicket was playing and the conditions we knew we were a chance but we’d have to bowl well to defend it,” Turpie said.

And bowl well they did.

Turpie took the opening wicket,

before Deon Biggs chimed in with one. Turpie then took seven wickets in a row to take Otago Country from 7/0 to 9/8.

The real turning point was that one over – the eighth over – where Turpie started with a dot ball, then took a hat-trick, then bowled another dot ball followed by his fourth wicket of the over.

His hat-trick started with a catch by Tom Ravenscroft and was followed by two successful lbw shouts.

His eighth and final wicket was that of Sam Blakely, also lbw, while Alex Hooper took the final wicket, clean bowling Tom Myles with Otago Country’s score just 36.

Caleb Carson was Otago Country’s man there at the end, not out on 25, having just witnessed the unthinkable unfolding around him.

His side had capitulated to lose by 106 runs.

Turpie is no stranger to top level cricket, having played for Canterbury Under-17 in the past, and also making Canterbury Under-19 and Canterbury A this year, but the weekend’s game was just his second for his home team in the Hawke Cup. He had just finished his final two years of schooling at Christ’s College and said he’d done a lot of work on the mental side of his game in recent time, something which paid dividends yesterday on a wicket he described as low, slow and unpredictable – tough to bat on, but a dream to bowl on.

After each wicket, he’d celebrate, but quickly regather his focus and walk back to his mark ready to do it all again.

At the end of yesterday’s remarkable performance, what he had achieved is still sinking in, but what had sunken in is the fact that the win ensured that his side was

now well and truly still in the running to earn themselves a Hawke Cup challenge this season.

The winner of Mid Canterbury’s zone will earn a challenge against the current Hawke Cup holders – zone mates Southland – and Mid Canterbury had needed to beat Otago Country to stay in the running.

Doing some quick maths after the game yesterday, Mid Canterbury coach Garfield Charles said a first-innings win against North Otago in Mid Canterbury’s final zone match in Oamaru this weekend should do it.
