A crime ring involving up to 11 young suspects is being linked to a string of break-ins around Ashburton during the weekend. Hampstead and Netherby homes were heavily targeted in the spree, with reports of thefts also in Tinwald and the CBD. Ashburton police revealed last week they had up to 11 people aged 16-24 on its radar, who are believed to be separating into smaller groups and breaking into homes and vehicles. In McMurdo Street in Tinwald, a garage was forced open and a car rummaged through overnight Saturday. Ms Bowden said police had a strong idea as to who was responsible for many of the incidents, and had con-

ducted forensics and fingerprinting which she hoped could prove who carried out the offences within the week. But it was vital the public contacted police immediately when they were alerted to suspicious behaviour, including on social media, so police could “catch them in the act”. “For the public it’s about having crime prevention steps in place, and reporting suspicious behaviour straight away. These people congregate and commit offences, and residents are seeing them walking up and down the road,” Ms Bowden said.
