Users of Ashburton’s EA Networks stadium could be walking away in droves if a proposed fee hike is signed off by the Ashburton District Council.

At a user group forum yesterday, attended by representatives of virtually every sporting code, it was made very clear that submissions in opposition to the fee rise had been made and would continue to be made.

The fee hike proposed is 40 per cent for courts and 9 per cent for the gym and pool complex. The reaction of the user community has been swift – a

united outrage. Currently the council has received 200 submissions, virtually every one in opposition. Submissions close on Monday and council research and monitoring advisor Toni Durham anticipates numbers will top 350.

At yesterday’s forum she outlined the submission and hearing process and explained that the council’s draft finance and revenue policy was about ensuring the system of paying for council services and activities was fair and equitable across the community. If people didn’t agree, then they had the opportunity to make their feelings known through the submission process, she said.

“We can’t re-litigate policy but it’s council’s job to listen and to hear what people are saying.

As they were lodged, submissions were loaded on the council’s website and were available for the community to read, she said.

“There are a lot of submissions and it’s clear people feel very strongly about this; people are having a say and that’s good.”

Outrage over stadium fee hike From P1 Submitters have the option of asking to speak to councillors during submission deliberations and that provided an opportunity to expand on a submission and for councillors to ask questions, Durham said.

Sport Canterbury Mid Canterbury manager Jan Cochrane urged sports clubs to work together, to make their feelings about the fee increase known, to send one clear message to the council.

“Since this became public I’ve had so many discussions with people who are concerned about what it will do to their sport; what it will do to sport, full stop,” Cochrane said.

There were indications that some user groups would look at alternative venues if the fees rose as proposed, she said.

“They’ve certainly been giving indications of what will happen.”

Rather than hiking up fees, Cochrane said it would be better to develop programmes for groups such as green prescription clients that would utilise the stadium during down times.

There could be a lower tier of fees for those groups using the facility during off-peak times, she suggested.

“We want to boost the use rather than up the fees and lose users. Increasing fees will have an impact not just on the EA stadium but in other areas as well.”

Submissions can be read on the council’s website and many submitters say an increase in fees will significantly impact the ability of families to have their children involved in sport.

Why does the council want to increase fees? users pay what they believe is a fair share of costs.

To do this it wants to change from covering 60 per cent of the costs from rates and 40 per cent from users, to a 50-50 split.

While the EA Networks centre receives high use this has resulted in higher than expected operating costs.

It is a perfect stadium for rhythmic gymnastics and we enjoy using it. I have had a fantastic response to the classes I have put on and over the last year have gone from 1 hour training a week to 7. I have approximately 22 girls and would like to be able to get more kids involved once I can secure some more coaches. I have two squads training at the moment – a recreation squad (1 hour per week) and a competition squad.

The competition squad has a minimum of 4-7 hours training per week the girls have to complete. I found it more difficult to convince some of the families to make this extra financial commitment to the extra hours necessary for competitive rhythmic gymnastics.

The opening of the stadium back in 2015 attracted a large crowd to a much-anticipated new facility. groups eg netball away from the stadium. Because they and other sports have to pay affiliation fees to a national body their subs are already at a level where some families struggle to cope and we all want our kids playing sport.

In this day and age many people multi sport and use this stadium for their sports so they will receive a double or maybe triple hit in their fees.

I urge you to rethink over these plans.

Mid Canterbury Netball is a major user of the stadium and it would mean netball would have to shift back outdoors because of the costs. Netball has seen an increase in player numbers since the competitions have been moved indoors. I believe this trend would reverse if games were shifted back outside. It would be so sad to see the children have to

go back to playing on Saturday mornings out in the cold, and we would also see a drop in spectators. If costs increase at all they should be shared evenly between stadium users and gym users.

Why should community based sports bear most of the burden?

The council has to be very careful it does not make the facility so expensive that people will not come through the doors - any increase in user fees would soon be absorbed by reducing numbers.

Public urged to protect property

Ashburton Police are continuing to investigate the spike in burglaries around town, and are urging the public to take extra precautions to protect their property.

Police said that they had identified a number of suspects in relation to car breakins and house burglaries, and have been investigating to gather evidence and further the inquiry.

Ashburton Borough School is among community groups sketching up ideas to help Tonga as it deals with the devastation of Cyclone Gita.

Principal Sam Winterbourn said the school is looking into the possibility of working with their wider Community of Learning and other community agencies to collectively help the nation.

Although he said it may be too early to make specific plans, the school are in contact with a staff family member in Tonga

Locals pay tribute to English

National Party politicians in Mid Canterbury yesterday paid tribute to their leader Bill English as news hit of his decision to leave Parliament.

Selwyn MP and former Minister of Justice Amy Adams said the resignation came as “a tremendous shock”.

“While I understand and respect his decision, I’m gutted to be losing a man of his stature and calibre. Bill is a tremendous leader and has done incredible things for New Zealand over his 27 years of public service for which I’m extremely grateful,” Adams said.

He will step down on February 27, initiating a leadership vote, and while there has been speculation on Adams as a potential successor, she would not be drawn on this yesterday.

“Today is about recognising Bill and his contribution, and is too soon to begin speculation on who the next leader may be.”

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon said he had been disappointed to hear of English’s resignation, but respected the decision his party leader had made with his family.

“Bill has made an enormous contribution to our country.

Three offenders armed with a large knife and a hammer have robbed a Hamilton superette before fleeing in a stolen car. Police say the red Mazda Demio used in the robbery at Deanwell Superette on Deanwell Ave yesterday morning had been stolen from Plunket Tce overnight.

Sports field charge to rise?

Ashburton District sports groups could shortly find themselves paying more to use the district’s playing fields.

Currently there is considerable inconsistency in the amount different sporting codes pay to use council owned fields around the district and a rewrite of the council’s sports fields’ policy aims to correct the imbalance.

Current arrangements with user groups have been reviewed and district councillors and tomorrow they will take a look at a draft policy that spells out a new charging regime.

The new charging regime has been based on the Timaru District’s model with fees to be about cost recovery rather than revenue generation.

Current maintenance costs for playing fields in Ashburton are: Argyle Park, $47,600; Ashburton Domain, athletics oval, $11,500; Ashburton Domain cricket and

soccer, $69,400; Robilliard Park, $5200. There are no charges for rural domains as user groups under take maintenance work.

Under the proposed charging regime, playing fields will be charged according to area. Proposed fees range from $30 for one day use of an area up to 200 square metres to $350 for an area greater than 200,000 square metres.

Season charges range from $100 for a 201 square metre to 5000 square metre field through to $530 for a field between 100,001 and 200,000 square metres.

Use of soccer and rugby fields are likely to see users charged $155 for single day use of $310 for a season.

The draft policy will be finalised tomorrow and will be adopted by council on February 22.

It will then go out for community consultation.

Hearings and deliberations will be held on April 26 and the new policy will be in force by July1.

Star to Ride That Train in Ashburton

The Mid Canterbury Choir’s latest companion comes with an iconic hairdo, endless exuberance and an impressive five-decade, nine album solo career.

He’s performed with Bob Dylan and Crowded House, sipped Verve Cliquot with Nora Jones and even shared an accidental kiss with B.B King – yet at 65 years od age Paul Ubana Jones is certainly not about to run out of steam.

Scoping out the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Monday, Ubana Jones said he is “still far too young to think of myself as a rock star”.

“It’s a funny thing, music. As a soloist, the doors just keep on opening … you can be pulled into any style.”

The internationally successful blues singer currently lives in Southbridge and is teaming up with the Mid Canterbury Choir for the Ride That Train at the event centre in April.

The show will take audiences through his wide repertoire of genres from gospel to afro roots, Bob Dylan to Bobby McFerrin, and personal stories from Ubana

He recalls the “silly story” behind his song The Owl and the Moon, written when he was a teenager. A young girl in his class caught his eye, and Ubana Jones quickly grabbed a bunch of flow-

ers, tied them up with his shoelace and tucked them under her desk.

“She came into class the next day, looked at them and just said ‘yuck!’ because it turns out they had all died overnight.”

“I don’t know where she is now, what she’s doing … but I still think of that story every time I play the song,” he laughed.

Meanwhile, in Ride That Train a different type of symbolism manifests – the imagery of black American blues.

“It’s the old train symbol of the 1800s, the ambition for a new existence,” he said, “The chance to be taken to a better place.”

Never one to rest on his laurels, Ubana Jones is also working on a new project – a tenth album, which he hopes to produce as an LP. “I’m putting together lots of sketches and hopefully it will have some big, soulful string arrangements, a Roger Fox Big Band kind of thing,” he said.

Detectives went undercover Detectives used a covert search warrant to rifle through a murder suspect’s bedroom while posing as a couple during an estate agent’s open day and sneak out with a hat and comb for DNA analysis.

The secret operation was revealed on the second day of Gambian butcher Sainey Marong’s High Court murder trial in Christchurch.

Marong, 33, denies picking up sex worker Renee Larissa Duckmanton from Christchurch’s red light district on May 14, 2016 before strangling her to death, dumping her body on a country roadside, and setting her on fire.

His defence says the evidence is best understood through a “lens of mental imbalance”.

Yesterday, the court heard how two detectives managed to take items from Marong’s flat in the Christchurch suburb of Ilam and get them analysed for DNA. While he was identified as a suspect in Duckmanton’s murder, the property where he was living was up for sale.

On Sunday, May 22 Detective Maania Piahana and a colleague posed as prospective buyers at an open day after a covert search warrant was granted. They were “tasked with gaining an item which may be suitable for DNA comparison” without Marong being alerted, Piahana told the court.

She walked in carrying an empty black handbag, which contained disposable gloves and plastic exhibit bags, and signed the register under her first name.

They walked through the address and found documentation with Marong’s name on it in a middle bedroom on the ground floor, the court heard.

With a glove on her left hand, Piahana said she took a black comb from a bedside cabinet and put it inside a sealed bag.

She then also took a black baseball cap and another comb, which she later returned.

Once they had grabbed what they came for, the officers returned to the city’s central police station, the court heard.

The Crown says its case against Marong is “overwhelming”, with DNA samples taken from Duckmanton, and also samples found where her body was dumped, allegedly belonging to Marong.

A sheep’s tongue “bizarrely” found at the scene is alleged to have come from an animal that Marong helped butcher the day the sex worker went missing.

Police examinations of Marong’s mobile phone, the Crown alleges, “deeply implicates” him in the murder.

Weeks before the alleged murder, the Crown says Marong searched for what kidnappers use to make people unconscious, chloroform, and is claimed to have clicked on an article entitled, How to kidnap a girl: an informative guide.

There were also multiple searches about necrophilia, including a “man having sex with dead body”.

The trial, before Justice Cameron Mander, continues today.

PM to meet CTV victims’ families Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed that she’s going to Christchurch tomorrow to meet the families of those who lost loved ones when the CTV building collapsed in the February 2011 earthquake.

The families are anxious to talk to her about their disappointment with the police decision not to prosecute the engineers responsible for the building because they think convictions would be unlikely.

The CTV building collapsed after the February 22, 2011 earthquake, killing 115 people including 65 foreign students. It accounted for the bulk of the quake’s 185 deaths.

Maan Alkais, who lost his wife in the collapse, says he is looking forward to meeting the prime minister.

“Basically the story did not finish and it’s been going on for seven years – we would

like to explain why we disagree with the decision by the police not to prosecute,” he told NZ Newswire.

“We will ask that this matter should be better resolved in a court where everyone can put forward their argument and a just decision be made.”

The victims’ families met with Justice Minister Andrew Little in December, who said at the time that he’s asked officials to look at introducing a corporate manslaughter law following the police decision not to prosecute.

Mr Alkais said that when the overwhelming majority of (the public) are this angry with the decision there “must be something wrong – when something is wrong it needs to be fixed”.

“I personally will never give up fighting for justice,” he said.

Gunmaker goes bust Remington, one of the best known makers of firearms in the United States, has reached a deal with its creditors to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The deal follows declining sales from the gunmaker - due in part to lessened fears that gun restrictions in the United States will get tighter at any point in the near future, the Daily Mail reports.

The Trump administration is a major supporter of the Second Amendment, and other gun companies such as American Outdoor Brands and Sturm Ruger have both reported having lost money since Trump’s election.

Remington will get $145 million to keep the company running through the bankruptcy process.

The bankruptcy filing is taking place in the state of Delaware, and Remington will seek to write off nearly $700 million in debt.

Cerberus Capital Management, the company that controls Remington, will lose control of the gunmaker in the deal.

Counting the cost of Cyclone Gita Three people are seriously injured, buildings have been destroyed and there are “roofs everywhere” in Tonga following Tropical Cyclone Gita’s visit.

His Majesty’s Armed Forces have been clearing debris from roads to allow emergency services to get across the main island of Tongatapu to assess the damage.

The category four cyclone

brought winds of more than 233km/h, ripping roofs off houses, destroying buildings and cutting power to the island.

In the capital Nuku’alofa photos have shown Parliament house levelled, and trees snapped in half.

“Wow, it’s a mess,” said Graham Kenna of Tonga’s National Emergency Management Office.

“There is so much damage, roofs everywhere, it’s the worst situation I have been in.

“A lot of the old heritage buildings, some that have stood for over 100 years, have been destroyed.

“A large number of houses have been completely destroyed also.”

With the roads cleared, emergency services had branched out to the east, west

and the capital to carry out initial assessments of the damage, Kenna said.

“The initial assessment will cover if people have homes to go back to.

“After that we will know just what we are dealing with.

“Later, a more in-depth assessment will cover water, sanitation, then agriculture and what items people have lost.”

Farewell, thanks and good luck Bill W

hile I didn’t expect it quite so soon, it’s no real surprise that Bill English has decided to call time on his political career.

Having been consigned to the Opposition after being unable to form a government after last year’s election, it was no secret that he wouldn’t be National’s leader next time around.

He was, in a way, a dead man walking, having retained the leadership for stability’s sake but knowing full well the party would be wanting new blood at the helm sooner rather than later.

You’d have to say he was unlucky.

If Metiria Turei hadn’t gone public with her welfare history, sparking a remarkable swing in fortunes for Labour under new leader Jacinda Ardern, English would more than likely be prime

minister today.

But that’s politics.

Despite leading National through two unsuccessful election campaigns, one as prime minister and the other as Leader of the Opposition, I’d like to think English will be remembered for what he achieved rather than where he ultimately fell short.

As finance minister he was a steady pair of hands at a time when there was a lot of pressure on the economy through the global financial crisis, the Christchurch earthquakes and low dairy payouts.

His critics will say he could have spent more but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

He did what he thought was best for the country and we didn’t come out of it too badly at all.

English was also a great number two, as John Key would surely attest to. Steady, reliable, trustworthy, and not one to either stab you in the back or hog the limelight, there would be many political leaders who would have loved to have someone like him backing them up.

The job of deputy prime minister is, by-in-large, a thankless task but it’s one he performed with aplomb.

If I’m going to be honest I was never sold on him as leader though. Despite being a thoroughly nice guy, he didn’t quite have the charisma of someone like Key or Ardern and when I saw him in

an Indian Airlines passenger jet crashed while landing at a southern Indian airport.

Ten years ago: A former student dressed in black walked onto the stage of a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University and opened fire on a packed science class; the 27-year-old gunman killed five students before committing suicide.

Five years ago: Double-amputee and Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp,

at his home in Pretoria, South Africa; he was later convicted of murder and is serving a 13-year prison term.

Ashburton twice during last year’s election campaign he didn’t deliver the “follow me” performance that someone truly comfortable in the role could have.

That said, he was down-toearth, had an easy manner and was always very approachable.

And in a way he did deliver, holding National’s vote at a similar level to the previous election and ensuring that, in terms of numbers, National will be the strongest opposition we’ve seen in this country.

So where to from here?

Well for English himself, it’s more time with family and at home in Dipton. Other challenges will come his way but in the meantime I think he’s perfectly entitled to a well-earned breather.

For the National Party, it’s an altogether different proposition.

English is only hanging around

Wellington for a couple of weeks, which will undoubtedly lead to frantic politicking and numbercounting among National’s leadership hopefuls.

The early money seems to be on Simon Bridges to take over from English, with current deputy Paula Bennett not rated a chance by anyone I’ve heard.

In fact, up until English’s resignation yesterday it was more likely that she would be pushed from her job before the party decided to get rid of English.

From a Mid Canterbury perspective, Selwyn MP Amy Adams could be a dark horse for Bennett’s job. She’s highly thought of, a proven performer in parliament and could be a good foil for Bridges, should he prove to be successful.

Time will tell. It’s going to be an interesting couple of weeks.

i Rob*, how are things going?

It certainly seems like business has been thriving for you lately.

I’m glad to see you found my car okay last week.

Apologies, I think it would have been a little out of the way for you and just out of reach of our sensor light, but it seems you didn’t have any trouble.

At the time you stopped by I was in the depths of some sort of wonderfully arbitrary dream.

It featured an enormous pet turkey, several pineapples and an intensely suspenseful plot line, so I’m truly grateful you didn’t wake me with any noise.

You must be aware of the empirical evidence backing a deep, undisturbed REM sleep in today’s fast-paced working world.

I’m glad you respected mine.

Although your workmanship was admittedly a little rough, you kindly removed one rear glass panel from my car, from beside the back seat.

With all this muggy weather I’m looking forward to optimising my fresh air intake and

When I one day get my samoyed I’m sure he’ll also relish the freedom to stick his face in the wind on State Highway 1.

As you know by now, I left you my personal Canon 750D DSLR camera in a bag tucked under my driver’s seat.

Some, like my insurer, may consider this “daft” or “forgetful”, but I suppose you simply saw the best in me and accepted it as generosity.

With the camera is a charged battery, two SD cards and two lenses.

I see you’ve accrued rather a collection of varying DSLR cameras lately, with which I can only presume you’ve been trying

to take the most flattering mug shot to hand in to police. I can’t fathom why else you’d need them.

I would recommend my 50mm lens for a great portrait shot.

The focal length is just right, but I promise it won’t oversharpen your complexion. Not that the Ashburton Police are the kind of folk to judge – you’ll hopefully be introduced to someone else with that job, of course!

As for the small mound of broken glass you left on our driveway, I believe Pinterest has 25+ best broken glass craft ideas which I’m quite enthused to try.

Perhaps I could melt it into a hipster pendant for Mum’s next birthday present.

Or, just like Hunterwasser crafted a famous toilet block in Kawakawa from glass bottles, perhaps I could make Ashburton a toilet block from all our town’s collective broken car windows?

Even better, it could serve as an extra funky local prison for crims like you.

Tax take up $600m New Zealand snared $600m more tax than expected in the second half of 2017, according to statements released by Treasury yesterday.

With the government books opened it reveals the Labour administration has inherited a booming economy.

This includes a slightly larger than expected operating surplus of $1.1 billion for the last six months of 2017.

This was more than three times the $311 million surplus predicted and up from a wafer-thin $9 million surplus a year earlier, the latest government accounts show.

When combined with higher than expected Crown entity results, the surplus was $800 million more than forecast, Treasury said yesterday.

Core Crown tax revenue was $37.2 billion for the six-month period and was $597 million ahead of forecast, due largely to source deductions tracking $300 million ahead of expectations

and GST $200 million ahead.

Treasury officials said they expect some of those gains to remain through to the end of the financial year on June 30.

Overall core Crown tax was $600m higher than what was expected in the Government’s halfyear economic and fiscal update, released in mid-December.

Tax sent straight to IRD was $300m more than expected and the GST take was $200m more than expected.

Core Crown expenses were $39.6b – slightly higher than the $39.5b forecast.

Net debt was $64.82 billion,

Finance Minister Grant Robertson said the figures were positive signs for the economy.

“We’ve seen consumer confidence improve over the past month, while businesses’ con-

fidence in their own activity – which is more closely correlated to economic growth than headline business confidence – has also been positive,” he said.

“At this point in the year these results indicate the economy is tracking well. The Government is committed to seeing this continue and ensuring that we have sustainable growth and a fair share in prosperity for all New Zealanders.”

The New Zealand economy will slow as labour constraints, changes in government infrastructure investment and lower dairy prices bite, economic research group Infometrics said this month.

“Lower levels of business and consumer confidence could also negatively affect business investment and household spending during 2018,” said Infometrics chief forecaster Gareth Kiernan.

Infometrics now sees GDP growth slowing through the year to 2.6 per cent by early next year – compared with earlier forecasts of accelerating growth. - NZME

Angry response from Trade Me retailers Plans by Trade Me to change its success fee model to include shipping costs has sparked an angry response from some retailers on the auction site.

The change means that from March 14 success fees for professional retailers will apply to both the item sale price and the shipping cost. The change did not affect casual sellers, who would continue to pay success fees only on the item sale price.

Trade Me Marketplace’s Rick Davies said the move would encourage more of Trade Me’s 19,000 professional retailers to provide buyers with free shipping and transparent prices.

“Buyers have told us high shipping costs are their number one annoyance when buying on Trade Me, especially when purchasing a new item.

“We want to provide a worldclass shopping experience,” Davies said.

“The expectations of Kiwis shopping online have soared in the past few years and we don’t want our professional retailers lagging behind.

“Things like fast, free, tracked shipping and no delivery fee surprises at checkout are table stakes in 2018.”

However, one retailer said he had asked the Commerce Commission to investigate.

He had responded to Trade Me, telling them the plan to charge on a seller’s costs was “outrageous” and the rationalisation that buyers loved free

In brief Detention for scam A former Ponsonby real estate agent has been sentenced to community detention after scamming a man out of $12,000 with a bogus Trade Me sale.

Samuel James Clough was sentenced in the Auckland District Court yesterday by Judge Philippa Cunningham to 11 months’ community detention and a year’s supervision. She also ordered him to pay $12,000 and $1334 in reparation, and suspended him from driving for 12 months. - NZME

Re-inventing the web Tim Berners-Lee is often credited as being the inventor of the World Wide Web — but these days he’s hellbent on changing it. The world renowned engineer and computer scientist has been working on a new project designed to fundamentally overhaul the internet and how it functions. He wants to pry power back from the tech juggernauts and give us more control over our personal data. Unilever fires a shot One of the world’s largest advertisers is threatening to pull its ads from social sites, such as Facebook and YouTube, if the tech companies don’t do more to minimise divisive content on their platforms.

Unilever’s chief marketing officer, Keith Weed, called on Silicon Valley on Monday to better police what he describes as a toxic online environment where propaganda, hate speech and disturbing content that exploits children thrive. “Fake news, racism, sexism, terrorists spreading messages of hate, toxic content directed at children – parts of the Internet we have ended up with is a million miles from where we thought it would take us,” Weed said.

Recycling leftover rice Rice just has to be one of the most versatile ingredients.

It’s great as an accompaniment to anything saucy, wonderful with spicy dishes where it can carry some heat and it’s fantastic as a leftover.

When you’re cooking rice, cook twice as much as you’ll need and keep the leftovers for a new culinary creation the following day.

Curried rice salad 400g cooked rice, chilled 1 apple 1 red onion 1 capsicum 55g raisins 3T finely chopped fresh herbs 60ml oil 75ml white wine vinegar 2t curry powder ■ Peel the onion and chop it finely.

■ Deseed and dice the capsicum.

■ Core and chop or slice the apple.

■ Whisk the ingredients for the dressing together.

■ Toss all the ingredients together in a large bowl, then transfer to a serving dish or individual bowls to serve.

Rice and cheese fritters 1C brown rice, cooked, cold 3/4 C grated tasty cheese 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 medium carrot, peeled and grated 1 small zucchini, grated 1t dried basil 1/4 C plain flour Salt and pepper Ricebran oil to shallow fry ■ Combine rice, cheese, eggs, carrot, zucchini, basil and flour.

■ Season well with salt and pepper ■ Heat the ricebran oil in a large

fry pan over a moderately high heat Fill a 1/4 C measure with the mixture and turn into the hot pan Flatten into a round fritter shape, and continue shaping the mixture to fill the pan.

Cook the fritters in batches for 2-3 minutes each side or until golden brown and crisp.

Transfer the cooked fritters to a plate lined with paper towel.

Serve the fritters warm with tomatoes and rocket.

Rice pie with courgette and feta 1C cooked white long-grain rice 1T olive oil 2 zucchinis, sliced 150g creamy feta, coarsely crumbled 100g semi-dried tomatoes, chopped 6 green onions, sliced 2T chopped fresh mint 4 eggs, lightly beaten ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Grease a 23cm tart pan with removable base.

■ Place rice in a large bowl.

■ Heat olive oil in a large nonstick frying pan over high heat.

■ Cook zucchini for 3 minutes, tossing frequently, until golden.

■ Add to rice with feta, tomatoes, green onions, mint and eggs to rice. Mix well.

■ Press mixture into the pan and place on an oven tray.

■ Bake for 25 minutes or until lightly golden and just set in the centre.

■ Serve warm with salad leaves.

Rice stuffed peppers 500g beef mince 35g taco seasoning mix 3/4 C water 2t chilli powder 1/2 C cooked rice 1/4 t salt 1/4 t garlic salt 1/8 t ground black pepper 500g tomato puree, divided 3 large red capsicums 6 (2cm) cubes colby cheese ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Grease an oblong baking dish.

■ Place the beef mince into a frying pan over medium heat ■ Brown the meat, breaking it apart into crumbles as it cooks, about 8 minutes.

■ Drain excess fat.

■ Stir in the taco seasoning, water, chilli powder, cooked rice, salt, garlic salt, black pepper ■ Add half the tomato puree; mix until thoroughly combined.

■ Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer 20 minutes.

■ Cut capsicums in half lengthwise then remove stems, membranes, cores and seeds.

■ Cook in steamer for 3 to 5 mins ■ Place the steamed capsicums

into the prepared baking dish ■ Fill lightly with the meat filling.

■ Press 1 cube of colby cheese into the centre of the filling in each ■ Spoon the tomato puree over the capsicums ■ Cover the dish with aluminium foil.

■ Bake in the preheated oven until the capsicums are tender and the filling is hot, 25 to 30 minutes.

Indian rice, potatoes and peas 1 onion, sliced lengthwise 1 potato (boiled and chopped) 1/3 C peas (boiled) 1/2 t cumin seeds 1/2 t mustard seeds 1 green chilli 2 - 3 curry leaves 2t vegetable oil 1/4 t turmeric powder 2C leftover cooked rice 2t lemon juice ■ Saute the onions till light brown ■ Add the rest of the ingredients above except for rice and lemon juice.

■ Heat through until fragrant.

■ Add rice and mix well.

■ Add lemon juice and serve with plain yoghurt.

Corn, bacon and rice slice

5 eggs 1/2 C cooked long grain rice 2 courgettes, grated 420g can corn kernels, rinsed and drained 4 rashers bacon, rind removed, diced 1/2 C grated tasty cheese Salsa: 1 red onion, diced 2 tomatoes, diced 1T olive oil Salt, to season Pepper, to season ■ Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced).

■ Lightly grease and line a 20cm square pan with baking paper.

■ In a large bowl, whisk eggs and rice together ■ Squeeze excess moisture from the courgettes ■ Add courgettes, corn, bacon and half of the cheese to the egg mixture.

■ Mix well. Season to taste.

■ Pour mixture into prepared pan ■ Sprinkle remaining cheese over the top ■ Bake for 25-30 minutes, until just se ■ Leave to cool in pan for 10 minutes.

■ Remove and cut into 8 slices.

Salsa: ■ Combine all salsa ingredients in a small bowl. Season to taste.

Nationals loom for skiers Mid Canterbury waterskiers are approaching the business end of the season, with a busy calendar ahead of the water ski nationals in the North Island in April.

The week-long nationals will hosted by the Piarere Water Ski Club on Lake Karapiro and Mid Canterbury is expected to have another strong presence, but local skiers have plenty of action before then, including another three-event tournament at Lake Hood on March 24 and 25.

Hood was the venue for the annual Aquafest last weekend, with

some outstanding results in slalom, jump and trick skis.

Event chief judge Janeen Donaldson said under 17 squad skiers were all training hard and looking for tournament PBs in the lead-up to nationals, when the next Junior Worlds team will be announced.

Ashburton’s Emily Milner is one of those looking for a spot in the team, so has stepped up to the girls’ age group for slalom scores at the under 17 boat speed.

results at the weekend, gaining three PBs with scores of 2.5@14.25m-55k in slalom, 2520 trick points, and a jump of 25.1 metres.

Lydia Munro from Christchurch also enjoyed PBs of 3@14.25m-55k and 16.2m in jump, and Timaru’s Alex Brown also skied two PBs in junior girls of 4@13m-52k and 26.3m.

The top slalom score of the day, and Open Men’s slalom trophy, went to Karl Donaldson with a best of 4@12m-58k.

The three Donaldson boys fought for jump honours, with Hugh winning out on 46.5m, over Karl 46.5m and George 44.6m.

The women’s jump was close between Brown, Milner and Courtney Holmes.

The tricks final round went ahead in rain on the Sunday, with the top score going to Hilary Munro with 4050 points.

Ben Simmons filled the stats sheet in Philadelphia’s big win over the Knicks while Joe Ingles was again a standout in Utah’s 10th straight NBA victory. The Jazz reaffirmed their status as the NBA’s hottest team, their 101-99 triumph over heavyweights San Antonio yesterday giving them the longest active winning streak in the league.

Elsewhere, Anthony Davis had 38 points and 10 rebounds to help the New Orleans Pelicans beat Detroit 118-103, the Los Angeles Clippers defeated the Brooklyn Nets 114-101, the Chicago Bulls fended off the Orlando Magic 105-101 and Golden State crushed Phoenix 129-83.

Lydia’s 11th caddy Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko has parted ways with Gary Gilchrist and enlisted former PGA golfer Ted Oh as her new coach.

Much like her 2017 campaign, Ko will begin 2018 with a fresh start – with Oh and new caddie Johnny Scott joining her for the Australian Open which begins tomorrow.

Scott would be Ko’s 11th caddie since she turned pro in 2013.

Peter Godfrey caddied for Ko during the LPGA Tour last year after replacing Gary Matthews in April.

Ko, now ranked world No. 10, hasn’t won a tournament since July 2016 and will be looking to Lydia Ko see her fortunes change as she heads into the new season.

Oh, 40, made six starts on the PGA Tour. He grew up in California competing against the likes of Tiger Woods, and in 1993 qualified for the US Open at the age of 16.

Ko said that the changes came after she lost confidence last year as she fell down the world rankings.

Ellyse Perry’s hamstring injury was the setback that turned into the launch pad for her stellar year. They were never going to sell it any other way, but there could be some fair truth in yesterday’s first ever all trotters’ sale at the Premier Yearling Sales being labelled a ‘‘resounding success’’.

That was the call from PGG Wrightson’s standardbred division representative, Peter Lagan, who was positively beaming at the completion of the 40-odd lots offered up in the Riding For the Disabled Arena at the Christchurch Showgrounds.

“I don’t think I can call it anything else,” he said.

“The feedback throughout the day and the encouraging comments in the immediate aftermath of the sale on how it went as a whole has been fantastic.

“I’ve had people coming up and tell me that they’ve got trotters sorted for the sale next year already.”

After a mixed bag day at Karaka on Monday, buyers, vendors and enthusiasts alike will have headed to Christchurch with a tentative mindset amidst a completely new look format to involve themselves in.

Things would have relaxed considerably when the first 10 lots through the ring went for a combined total of $250,000 as buyers settled into their work.

“By having the parade first, we managed to ensure there was a good strong crowd on hand and the numbers around the ring when the first lot came through were very good and it set the tone.

“As is always the case though, nice types with good pages will always sell well.”

The top lot of the day came as no surprise to anyone with big-spending Australian Emilio

Safety questions hit organisers The governing body of worldskiing is being hit hard with questions about why it allowed the women’s slopestyle event to go ahead amid bitter winds and iced-over jumps in Pyeongchang.

Forty-one of the 50 runs ended with either a rider falling or bailing out because she could not build up enough speed to reach the crest of a jump.

International Ski Federation spokeswoman Jenny Wiedeke says only one team “voiced con-

cerns” about going ahead with the event.

She declined to name the country. It was different at the end of the runs when riders complained openly in the mix zone, the area where athletes speak to reporters.

Wiedeke says “we know it was very difficult conditions for the riders”.

She says “no athlete is forced to go down and compete”.

Wiedeke says the federation

has concussion protocols and “most teams come with their own doctors. Those that don’t, there are local doctors on hand and we also have an official FIS doctor.

“So there are plenty of people on hand to diagnose if they feel it’s necessary.”

She also acknowledged the course was very difficult, even in perfect conditions.

Wiedeke says “at the Olympic Games we set our courses to

the highest international standard. We’re very pleased with the entire course-building process.

Very cold temperatures here have created ideal snow conditions for our events.”

The wind was again a factor at Jeongseon.

Gusts higher up the mountain forced organisers to lower the start, cutting 20 seconds from the downhill. Racers were also guided to a safer line cresting the jumps.

All Blacks’ training camps storm in a teacup

H

uff, puff, moan, groan life’s not fair say New Zealand’s Super Rugby coaches as they come to terms with a landscape that looks exactly like it has almost every year since 2012.

Like children indignant with rage at the nightly discovery there is an expectation they will wear pyjamas to bed, New Zealand’s Super Rugby coaches seem to be trying to make out they have been duped by the All Blacks: blindsided by the national coaching panel’s request to release players for mid-season training camps.

Memories appear to be short in some quarters as this really isn’t new, unusual or a response to some festering concern about playing England later in the year.

All Blacks training camps have

been a constant part of the Steve Hansen coaching regime and every Super Rugby coach, on seeing the draw when it was released in September last year, must have strongly suspected that they would be asked to release players for the national cause.

They can’t play dumb on this as the situation was the same in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

The exceptions were 2015 because there was a significant preparation period between the end of Super Rugby and the first scheduled test and last year, again because the squad assembled two weeks before taking on the British & Irish Lions.

The mid-season camps are back in 2018 because there is a full round of Super Rugby on the weekend of June 1-2 and test players will only assemble six days before they play France at

Eden Park on June 9.

Hansen wants a bit of time with a wider squad before they turn up in early June.

It won’t be ideal for New Zealand’s sides to have a couple of games where their All Blacks’ contingent miss the early part of the week, but nor will it be quite as catastrophic as they suggest.

They will cope just fine.

What has been signed off is not excessive and if they doth protest too much it will start to feel like their true intention is to lower public expectation: nail down the excuses before the season starts to create the chance of underpromising and over-delivering.

Which brings things full circle, as this is precisely the luxury that is not afforded to coach Hansen.

He can’t under promise as should the All Blacks lose to France in Auckland, any attempt to blame a lack of preparation time will simply inflame the public ire.

Biosecurity affects bike race

Competitors in this year’s Mt Somers Mountain Bike Race will be amongst the first athletes in the country to be disinfected for the cattle disease mycoplasma bovis prior to the race.

The annual race, which is in its 13th year, crosses through Mt Somers Station, a 3800 hectare working farm owned by David and Kate Acland. They farm 13,000 breeding sheep, 200 beef and 3000 deer, and run a 1300-cow dairy unit.

designed to disinfect their bike tyres for mycoplasma bovis and didymo.

Mycoplasma bovis has been found on two Mid Canterbury dairy farms and farmers all over the country are being told to implement biosecurity measures that strictly control vehicle and people movement on their properties.

Didymo is a rock snot that can be spread between waterways and rivers by boaties, anglers and others via their equipment.

The Ministry for Primary Industries is involved in the battle against both.

The bike race is being organised by the Mayfield and Districts Lions Club and or-

ganiser Aubrey Aitken said the farm owners had asked that cyclists pass through a disinfectant bath before coming onto the property, as part of their wider biosecurity programme.

The race starts and finishes at the Mt Somers Domain and competitors will park their vehicles near the rugby club and push their bike through a shallow disinfectant bath on the way to the starting area; they will walk on a carpet soaked with the recommended chemical to disinfect the bottom of their shoes.

Aitken said it was a simple process, noone would get wet feet, and the club would

be meeting the requirements of the Aclands.

“Without their help, we would not be able to run this great race.”

The club also had a responsibility to make sure mycoplasma bovis and didymo did not spread further in the district, he said.

The event has raised around $190,000 over the past decade and is given back to the community to groups and individuals needing help.

Aitken said entries were coming in steadily for the race, which features three separate courses to cater for cyclists of different abilities.
