Ashburton residents are urged to get their nominations in for this year’s Trustpower Ashburton District Community Awards before time runs out. So far, a number of entries have been received, but organisers hope to see many more before the closing date of March 10. Last year’s winner was Community House Mid Canterbury for volunteer efforts put in to fundraising for new facilities. Representatives will now compete in the Trustpower National Community Awards, held in Rotorua between March 24-26. awards for this year. “Entries are going well and we have had a good number, but we are always on the lookout for new groups,” she said. “It’s about celebrating what they do in the community and everybody who does voluntary contributions is welcome and encouraged to enter. “March 10 will roll around really quickly.” The awards began in 2001 and since their inception more than $82,000 has been given away. This year more than $5000 is up for grabs. Ashburton District Council business support officer Louise Glennon said they had received a number of entries so far, but some of these still needed to complete their submissions. “Quite often we get a flurry towards the end,” she said.
“It doesn’t matter what size the group is and you can nominate yourself as well. “There’s so much going on within the district and so many groups are made up with community volunteers, it’s amazing.” The local awards will be judged by the mayor and councillors, Trustpower representatives and previous winners. The awards cover five categories; Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Educational and Child/ Youth Development.
