Kutcher hanging at Bondi Ashton Kutcher has been snapped at Bondi wearing a souvenir cap from the famous beach. The 37-year-old was spotted wearing a white T-shirt with rolled sleeves, thongs and a yellow beach towel around his waist. The new dad, who is fond of wearing caps, topped off the look with a red Bondi Australia baseball cap and sunglasses. The Hollywood hunk will speak at an invite-only computing event in the city’s CBD. Pamela Anderson files for divorce Actress Pamela Anderson has filed for divorce from Rick Salomon once again – less than six months after seeking the dismissal of her previous petition. The former Baywatch star, 47, moved to end her second brief marriage to the film producer in July last year, citing irreconcilable differences for the split. But the on/off couple subsequently reunited and the divorce paperwork was dismissed weeks later. However, the reconciliation didn’t last and Anderson this week lodged new split documents in court, according to TMZ.com. She listed Tuesday as their date of separation.

Schoolkids visited by T rex Youngsters at an Auckland school got a close look at what was once one of the world’s greatest creatures – the Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur. Although it was a baby T rex, children at Birkenhead Primary squealed and gasped as the dinosaur slowly approached them in the school gym. As its nose almost touched theirs many scuttled backwards; but with huge smiles on their faces. The appearance was to help promote the production Walking With Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular which opens in Auckland next month. Organisers now plan an extra show, on Sunday, March 8, because of demand. The show features life-sized dinosaur replicas roaming and interacting with each other on a stage dressed up to match the dinosaurs’ natural habitat. T rex is possibly the best-known dinosaur because of its huge size, ferocious nature and frequent appearances in movies and storylines.

Feed stocks under scrutiny

Mid Canterbury could become a stockfeed oasis in the heart of drought-stricken Canterbury.

But concerns about price gouging are emerging.

A nationwide audit is under way to estimate how much stock feed will be available to carryover livestock in the large tract of the South Island’s east coast under siege from drought.

Federated Farmers’ Mid Canterbury chairman Willy Leferink, who is co-ordinating

the local effort, said work on the feed inventory was well under way, and it was likely South Canterbury cattle would be trucked into the district to winter over.

“We are really lucky to have a lot of irrigation in Mid Canterbury, so the situation here is not as desperate as it is in South Canterbury.

“There is a good chance dairy cattle from South Canterbury will be wintered here.

“That’s another issue we have to deal with.”

Mr Leferink said Southland, which has not been affected by drought conditions, was another option.

“Once you’ve put cattle on a truck it doesn’t matter where they go really.

“It depends on where the feed is and who’s got the money to pay for it. It will depend on who’s got the deepest wallet.”

He hoped the impending feed shortages would not spiral into a price gouging war, with the high demand pushing prices up.

“I sincerely hope it doesn’t

come to that. We need to find good alternatives and work out how we are going to feed the cows to get through this period.

“We have to make sure that PKE (palm kernel extruder) supplies keep coming and we have sufficient on hand to get through the winter.”

The Ministry of Primary Industries is working closely with the federation to ensure adequate supplies of PKE are available.

crops will also be included in the audit. “We need to know how much winter feed is out there, what is likely to come and what the yields are likely to be - then we can assess how many cows that will feed.

“We also need to know how much grain and straw will be available and work from there to find out what the shortages are and what we will roughly need to get through the winter – but every week sees a new target, it all depends on whether it rains.”

Community House closes in on purchase target

In late October the trustees of Ashburton’s Community House had a huge goal, to raise $1.1 million; four months later they’re almost there.

Yesterday the Ashburton Trust Lion Foundation handed over $200,000 to Community House that all but clinches its deal to buy a Cass Street building that has been standing empty since two Ashburton’s Work and Income staff were shot and killed and a third was injured on September 1.

Only a month later, the Community House board asked the Ashburton District Council for a grant to help it buy the building. The council opened its cheque book and committed $500,000 to the project.

And that was the catalyst that sparked a string of other donations, said board chair John Driscoll.

“The council grant was huge, it showed they were behind the project and it showed they were on the same page as us, it led the way,” he said.

Mr Driscoll said the board had been overwhelmed by the strong community commitment to see Community House move into a premises that could accommodate the breadth of groups that came under its umbrella.

House was based in a council owned building on the corner of Cass and Tancred Street. It has since been demolished and the organisation moved into a much smaller base at the rear of the Westpac bank as a stopgap measure while it tried to find a permanent home.

The Winz building was perfect, Mr Driscoll said and feedback from the community was that it was a good use for a building that had such a tragic history.

done by the end of this month and then planning for alternations and renovations will begin. An application for Lotteries funding will be lodged.

The trust plans a dramatic change to the building’s exterior to signal a new start, with a new use, he said.

Its past, however, would not be forgotten as a memorial would be erected in memory of the women who had been killed or injured in the shootings.

Ashburton Trust member Roger Paterson said the Lion Foundation board was pleased to be playing a part in ensuring the Winz building had a new life.

“This will take the stigma off the building and it means we’re showing the rest of New Zealand we can climb back up.”

As well as the council and Lion Foundation grants, the project has attracted a grant from the Mid South Canterbury Community Trust of $250,000, $100,000 from the Mackenzie Charitable Trust, $20,000 from the Lochhead Trust and a number of smaller donations.

Surprises in NCEA results

New provisional NCEA results have turned up some surprises, much to the delight of Mid Canterbury’s secondary school principals.

The data shows one school bucked a national trend by increasing the percentage of students who achieved university entrance, despite new requirements making achieving the standard more difficult.

Secondary schools across the country saw fewer students achieving university entrance, with just 58 per cent of students achieving the standard nationwide.

However Mt Hutt College saw a small increase last year with 73.2 per cent of students achieving university entrance, up from 71.8 per cent in 2013.

The college also saw a significant jump in the percentage of students achieving NCEA Level 3, leaping from 69.2 per cent in 2013 to 90.2 per cent last year.

While the figures are subject to change as students can still apply to have their exams remarked, Mt Hutt College principal John Schreurs was pleased with the school’s results.

“It’s really good,” he said.

“We’re glad we’re meeting the needs of our students.”

Ashburton College saw more students achieving at both Level 1 and Level 2, although it saw a small drop in the number of students gaining Level 3, down from 77 per cent to 76 per cent.

The changes to university entrance requirements also affected Ashburton College, which saw a 13.5 per cent drop in the number of students achieving the standard.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan was “really pleased” with the school’s results.

The trip to the gate to check your letterbox will be a lot less frequent in Ashburton come July, when NZ Post reduces mail deliveries to three times a week.

Last year the organisation decided to change delivery frequencies on the back of falling mail volumes, but after a drawn out battle, rural people won the right to keep their six-day a week delivery service.

Missing woman found Missing woman Laura Singh has been found alive. Ms Singh, 34, went missing after leaving her Greenlane home around 8pm on Monday. Until today, neither her or the metallic blue Hyundai Tuscon, registration number ENJ73, she was driving had been seen since.

Auckland City Police communications manager Noreen Hegarty said Ms Singh was found yesterday in Wellesford and was taken home by police.

Driver dies A 74-year-old man has died at Hawke’s Bay Hospital after the car he was driving ended up on a pedestrian barrier earlier this week. The crash happened about 11.20am on Wednesday near St Georges Rd, Havelock North.

Police confirmed the death and believe a medical condition caused the man to pass out while driving.

Police have halted the investigation into the crash.

Twenty-eight jobs lost Twenty-eight workers at a circuit board manufacturer in Wellington have lost their jobs. Yesterday, SRX Global in Wellington announced its plant was closing and all work would be shifted to Australia and Malaysia. Many of the workers at the circuit board manufacturer had been with the company for 10 to 30 years, and would find it very difficult to get comparable jobs or wages in the Wellington region, a spokesperson for New Zealand Engineering Printing & Manufacturing Union (EPMU) said.

Ashburton in first wave of delivery cutbacks

Priority mail, including FastPost will continue to have a next day delivery target between major towns and cities.

The alternate day delivery will be fine-tuned in parts of Auckland before the July roll-out.

The new service will operate with two routes for standard mail – a Monday, Wednesday and Friday delivery or Tuesday, Thursday and Satruday.

Nationally, the change is expected to cost about 400 posties their jobs, with 300 of those

likely to go on July 1.

Those job losses are part of the 1500 plus front and back line jobs that were tagged as likely to go across the business as it refocuses itself on its growing parcels business.

New Zealand Post’s mail and communciations chief operating officer Ashley Smout said he anticipated the reduced urban delivery service would have little impact on people.

“We’re making these changes in response to people sending fewer letters. Our analysis shows the average household receives letters just three days

a week now,” he said.

Posties on scooters is being tipped as the way of the future for urban mail deliveries and Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay last year put his hand up for the motorised scheme to be trialled in Ashburton. This has yet to happen.

New Zealand Post is still trialling new vehicles that will make it easier and more efficient to deliver a range of mail and parcels.

A pilot will be held in New Plymouth and to test greater integration of mail and parcel delivery.

A fire has broken out in an Auckland school hall. The fire at Matipo Primary School on Te Atatu Peninsula broke out in a ceiling void of the school hall about 10:45am yesterday. Northern fire communications manager Steve Smith said he wasn’t sure how much damage the fire had caused but it “wasn’t a major”. A spokeswoman at the school said: “Everybody is safe and sound.”

No injuries had been reported.

Car chase on beach A man is in custody following a police chase that ended on a Wellington beach yesterday.

Central police communications Inspector John Spence said about 5.25am yesterday, a stolen Toyota Surf utility vehicle was spotted by police in Paekakariki, Wellington.

The vehicle failed to stop for police and then drove through Haywards Hill Road, before it made a u-turn and headed back towards Paraparaumu, Mr Spence said. “Spikes were deployed in Paekakariki and it went through the spikes, which deflated three of the tyres,” Mr Spence said.

“The driver then kept on driving at slow to medium speed with flat tyres through Raumati, onto Paraparaumu beach.” Mr Spence said the driver continued along the beach until he finally stopped the car and tried to escape on foot.

The man was caught soon after by a police dog handler, he said.

Opening ‘not invitation only’

The perception that today’s opening of Ashburton’s Art Gallery and Heritage Centre is an invitation only event is totally incorrect, says Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay. More than 280 invited guests will gather in Baring Square at 1pm for the official opening ceremony, but that does not preclude members of the public turning up to be part of the occasion, Mr McKay said.

“We’re operating in a public space that’s available to the public. People can just turn up and they can file through the building after the invited guests.”

The Art Gallery Trust, the Art Gallery Committee, the Family History Group and the Historical Society and Museum were asked for the names of people they believed should be part of the opening ceremony and invitations were sent to those people, Mr McKay said.

That did not mean the opening was a closed door event, he said.

While he does not anticipate any disruption to the event, conversations on social media suggested there could be people turning up at the opening in a protest role.

Mr McKay is not concerned; the event was a public one in a public place that any person had a right to attend, he said.

Man charged over 21-year-old rape, kidnapping

The 48-year-old was charged

DoC said it was plausible pilot whales’ echo-location was not well-suited to shallow, gently sloping waters as they usually preferred steep areas such as continental shelf edges.

“Another theory points to pilot whales’ highly sociable behaviour - when one whale loses its way and strands, its pod mates may swim to its aid,” the Department said on its website.

Pilot whales are oceanic dolphins and include two species _ long-finned and short-finned.

Mr Lamason said people who wanted to help the pilot whales should arrive at Triangle Flat from 8am to 3pm today.

He said people should bring wet weather gear, sunscreen, food and water. DoC was installing portable toilets at Triangle Flat.

More stranded pilot whales are expected to die as weather conditions and nightfall hampered efforts to save 174 pilot whales that ran into trouble yesterday.

The whales were stranded on Farewell Spit at Golden Bay, near Nelson.

Andrew Lamason of the Department of Conservation (DoC) said up to 500 volunteers could be needed to help get the whales back in the water today.

Initial estimates of 30 stranded pilot whales rose yesterday to 60, then 143, and finally 198.

Mr Lamason said of those, two dozen had died by 6.30pm and he expected that number to rise.

The Department was scaling down the rescue operation as night approached.

“We can’t have people overnight in the water with whales.

It’s just far too dangerous,” Mr Lamason said.

After that, the creatures would be tethered at mid-tide and nature would “take its course” as happened when three stranded sperm whales were towed to another part of Farewell Spit to decay away from the public in November.

Darren Grover, Project Jonah general manager, was due to arrive last evening at the site of the stranding.

“We’ll be mobilising our supporters from the South Island and ... hopefully from the Wellington region as well.”

Scheme ‘should work here’

Applications for the Voluntary Bonding Scheme are now open and the scheme is one that could work well in Mid Canterbury, says an Ashburton GP. It is designed to persuade medical graduates to work in a list of hard-to-staff communities or specialities for three to five years after they graduate.

Cox says in theory the scheme is a great idea.

“These schemes have worked in the past and in fact a number of GPs on the South Island’s west coast in the 1950s and 1960s were also bonded.”

She said it could work well in Ashburton but the trainee has to be supervised by a GP who is a fellow of the Royal New College of General Practitioners.

“Not all GPs are eager to take on a teaching role,” she said.

The decision to opt in is one made by individual GPs. Dr Gayle O’Duffy of the Methven Medical Centre confirmed the practice currently has one registrar on the bonding scheme.

Canterbury was only included in the scheme last year, she said.

Funding received by these doctors is for the purpose of repaying students loans – if they have them.

Doctors signed on to the

scheme will receive an incentive payment after completing a three-year stint.

Payment for doctors completing each period of 12 months is $10,000.

Last year nearly $17 million was paid to participants.

Over 3000 graduates are signed on to the scheme and over 700 health professionals are already receiving payments.

Registrations close on Friday, March 13.

That’s according to the newly-published findings of a global study that estimates between five and 13 million tonnes of plastic waste wind up in the world’s oceans every year. Unless the international community improved its waste management practices that number could increase ten-fold within the next decade. The authors found the coastal countries they studied generated about 275 million tonnes of plastic waste in 2010, and that 4.8 to 12.7 million tonnes of that waste entered the world’s oceans.

Icebreaker on way to free trapped fishing vessel A United States Coast Guard icebreaker is expected to reach a fishing vessel trapped by ice in Antarctica with 13 New Zealanders on board early this morning.

The Antarctic Chieftain, a 63-metre-long toothfishing vessel owned by Australian Longline Pty, requested assistance from The Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) on Wednesday, after it damaged three of its four propellers and became trapped in ice.

“I’ve been further around near the [Ngongotaha] stream mouth with a wheel barrow and collected 19 [ducks] all up and a couple of seagulls. I buried them in the neighbour’s offal pit. He thought the low water level of the lake may also be contributing to the deaths.

“I’ve lived here 15 years and this is the lowest I’ve seen the lake area.

It’s down a good [metre]. You can’t launch boats at the jetty because it’s too shallow.”

Overrun with plastic

There has been an 11th hour reprieve for an Ashburton charity.

Fruit Fund founder Deirdre Moses came dangerously close to pulling the pin on her project after the workload continued to grow beyond what she could manage on her own.

“I am constantly screaming out for help with little response.

“I can’t do this on my own,” she said.

Finally though, someone heard her.

Mrs Moses took to social media to call out for help one last time.

She said she knew how much local children needed the help that the charity provided but was struggling to maintain it.

She was struggling to find people to make funding applications, to do the cash flow book, help with fundraising and to contact the schools, amongst other things.

The biggest issue for her at the moment was trying to help find people to pick fruit.

The vessel was about 1700 kilometres from McMurdo Sound, on the eastern edge of New Zealand’s search and rescue region.

US Coastguard icebreaker Polar Star was on its way to the site to help free the vessel and had been making its way through icy waters.

Conditions permitting, it was expected to reach the Antarctic Chieftain in the early hours of this morning.

Johnston said the skipper of the icebreaker indicated he was intending on towing the Antarctic Chieftain into open waters today.

Antarctic Chieftain’s hull was not damaged, there had been no spill of oil from the vessel and the crew was not at risk, Mr Johnston said.

“The crew is safely on board, they have plenty of supplies and the vessel’s integrity is not compromised.

“There is clear water around the vessel, so the hull is not being squeezed by the ice, but a combination of an unexpected

build-up of ice floes two to three metre thick and damage to the propellers means it cannot get back to the open sea without assistance.”

The New Zealand-flagged fishing boat, Janas, was also heading to the area to provide assistance if required.

Weather conditions continued to be favourable.

Australian Longline managing director Les Scott said the ship, which was licensed to fish for toothfish in the Southern Ocean, was damaged on Saturday when it hit ice.

The family of a Rotorua teenager who lost the use of her eye after being attacked say they’re now ready to move on, after her attacker was sent to jail for more than four years. Shane Arron Kanara was sentenced in the Hamilton District Court yesterday to four years and five months in jail on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He had previously admitted five charges including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault with intent to injure. The victim lost the use of her right eye after her eye socket was broken and eyelid torn. She also had partial loss of vision in her left eye because of it. Outside court the mother of the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said they felt “relieved” after yesterday’s sentencing.

First Samoan scholarship

After months of anxious waiting, Mid Canterbury scholarship students finally received their results this week.

For former Ashburton College student Sala Touli, 18, the day was extra special.

Miss Touli achieved a scholarship in Samoan, becoming the first Ashburton College student to do so.

Nearly 8000 students sat scholarship exams around the country last year, with nearly

2300 achieving the standard.

Miss Touli was the only Ashburton College student to achieve the scholarship standard.

Two students from Mt Hutt College also achieved a scholarship standard.

Originally hailing from Samoa, Miss Touli moved to New Zealand when she was 11.

When she reached Year 12 at Ashburton College, she decided she wanted to study her native language.

“Keeping my language and

culture was really important to me,” she said.

However, because the college did not offer Samoan as a subject, Miss Touli was presented with the extra challenge of having to study it via video conferencing.

She attempted scholarship Samoan in Year 12, but just missed the mark.

While she was disappointed, Miss Touli put in the hard yards last year and achieved the scholarship standard in Year 13.

“It’s really exciting,” she said.

“I didn’t think it was achievable.”

She said she was grateful for the support of her teachers, who did their best to help her even though they did not speak Samoan.

“They believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself,” she said.

The talented teen is taking a gap year out to work before heading to university, with the ultimate goal of becoming a secondary school teacher.

Participant fighting to keep his job

By Kurt Bayer The married man caught in a steamy office encounter with a co-worker is “fighting tooth and nail” to keep his insurance job NZME. News Service has learned.

The man, in his late 40s with two teenage children, has been told by bosses at Christchurch firm Marsh Ltd not to comment about the incident which created headlines around the world.

He hasn’t been back to work for two weeks since the latenight romp on January 30 that was witnessed and filmed by a dozens of drinkers at the Carlton Bar and Eatery across Papanui Rd.

“I can’t talk about it at all,” he said when he answered the door at his Sumner home yesterday.

He refused to say whether he hoped to get his job back or whether his wife was standing by him. “I really can’t say anything,” he said.

Bosses at Marsh Ltd identified the pair and have started an investigation.

An insurance industry insider said the man was desperate to save his senior management position.

“He’s fighting tooth and nail to stay,” the source said.

“There is a lot of legal difficulties that Marsh are having to go through, and they are going to take their time.

“But [the man] is hoping that he can return in some capacity to a job that he loves.”

But another source claimed that Marsh - horrified by the high-profile incident - want him out.

“The question is, can the guy get another job without having to expose his past error.”

The female employee, understood to be in her 20s and recently engaged, was not at her Christchurch home yesterday and did not respond to messages.

Her ex-fiancé has come out in her defence to describe her as a “a really nice person, she never made any mistakes” and that it was a sad situation “for everyone involved”.

The man’s wife, who allegedly found out about the affair after seeing it on Facebook, is said to be distraught over the incident A neighbour of the family, who wished to remain nameless, said only the man had been around this week.

He appeared to be home alone all day yesterday.

“The wife and kids haven’t been about and he’s been keeping a very low profile.”

Employment law experts say it’s possible that the couple could lose their jobs.

Privacy Commissioner John Edwards, however, said it was unlikely they would be able to sue for breach of privacy.

A policeman was left dazed, confused and injured after being knocked to the ground and punched repeatedly by a peppersprayed man in the Octagon last December, the Dunedin District Court heard yesterday.

The attack by 22-year-old storeman, Estakio Mounga Tonga Moataane, left Constable Rebekah Kitto with a large swollen area to the back of head, bruised and grazed elbows, a large bruise to her lower back, a sore neck and chest and slight bruising and swelling to the side of her face.

Ms Kitto was also affected by the pepper spray, police prosecutor Stewart Sluis said.

The incident grew from an altercation between Moataane and his brother, Steven, in the Octagon about 4am on December 7. There was some mutual pushing and shoving before the defendant punched his brother once in the face, knocking him momentarily unconscious.

When his brother regained his feet, the defendant punched him in the face again.

Two police officers, Constables Kitto and Ben Catchpole, arrived and arrested the defendant for fighting. At that stage, he became aggressive and tried to stop the officers handcuffing him. He was pepper-sprayed.

Two other police officers arrived and, as the four stood around Moataane who was suffering from the effects of the pepper spray, he ran at speed at Ms Kitto, tackling her backwards to the ground, causing the back of her head to strike the brick pavement.

Ms Kitto tried to pepper spray the defendant as she fell with Moataane on top of her. But he raised the right side of his body, leaned over her and directed multiple punches at her face. He resisted attempts by two other officers to pull him off and it took a third constable using a baton to make him release his hold on the policewoman. He was restrained and eventually handcuffed.

Moataane yesterday admitted intentionally injuring Ms Kitto and assaulting Mr Catchpole with intent to avoid arrest for the assault on his brother. He also admitted a Crimes Act assault on Steven Moataane.

On all three charges he was convicted and remanded in custody for restorative justice and for sentence on April 21.

Judge Coyle declined an application for bail.

Iraq wants help for World War Three

BY ISAAC DAVISON AND BRENDAN MANNING The Iraqi Government has asked for New Zealand’s help to fight the Islamic State by describing the battle as World War Three because it is affecting citizens in all countries.

The Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Ja’afari did not specifically invite New Zealand to train Iraqi troops in a meeting with Foreign Minister Murray McCully in Auckland yesterday, but issued a general invitation to the international community for support.

New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Murray McCully said Dr al-Ja’afari made it clear that Iraq was looking for assistance in the form of training, logistics, reconstruction and capacitybuilding.

“They are looking for support and assistance from countries, not only those that are inside the formal coalition, which we are, but also some countries

outside it,” he said.

In a press conference, Dr alJa’afari described the battle against ISIS as a global war because it had spread beyond Iraq’s borders.

“The goals of IS are globalised, they target markets, hospitals, schools, mosques, churches in every country,” he said, using a translator.

New Zealand has still not of-

ficially confirmed a deployment to Iraq, but it already has troops training for any deployment and a team of military in Iraq scoping out what role New Zealand could play and assessing factors such as safety. Prime Minister John Key has repeatedly said Government would not commit to any combat role.

Dr al-Ja’afari said if New Zealand sent troops to the region for training purposes, the Iraqi Army would provide protection for them.

This appeared to contradict the New Zealand Government’s plans for the New Zealand Defence Force to provide protection. Mr McCully insisted on Thursday that this would still be the case.

Dr al-Ja’afari also conceded that there was a level of corruption within the Iraqi armed forces, “but this does not mean that there aren’t courageous Iraqi soldiers and officers to fight and sacrifice themselves”.

The Iraqi Foreign Minister

also met with Leader of the Opposition Andrew Little and shadow foreign affairs minister David Shearer yesterday.

Mr Shearer said that apart from a request for air cover which New Zealand could not provide - the minister did not put pressure on New Zealand to contribute military assistance.

The pressure to make a military commitment appeared to be coming from “the club” USA, Canada, and Australia and not Iraq.

Mr Shearer said he was still not convinced that New Zealand providing military trainers would make any difference, and he was concerned about the potential for “mission creep”.

“It’s certainly going to put a number of people in harm’s way. The Canadians, who went in there only to train, have been involved in firefights already.

So inevitably we will be pulled into a bigger conflict if we are there.”

That strategy is enshrined in a long-term community plan that covers 10 years of the council’s business life. It is reviewed and revised every three years to ensure it remains relevant in what has become a rapidly-changing Ashburton District.

When it developed the first long-term plan in 2003, this was done on the back of extensive community consultation where issues that were important to all communities around the district were gauged. That community consultation remains an integral

part of the plan each time it is reviewed.

Today’s Ashburton District is a very different place to the Ashburton District of 2003. It has undergone phenomenal growth in terms of its economy, its population, land use, cultural diversity and the expectation of its residents.

plan, it is important take its revised long-term community plan to residents for input, chief reporter Sue Newman takes a look at what can be dismissed as an also ran in terms of the national economy.

Today we are leaders, with one of the fastest-growing GDPs and one of the most rapidly-increasing populations.

And for the council that means planning for the future is about planning for change and challenge. With millions of dollars committed in infrastructural and

community projects, the council is constantly juggling dollars. Its planners have to be more than crystal-ball gazers when it comes to anticipating how much the district will grow and change in the years ahead.

Today the only certainty is that there will be change and there will be growth. The key for the council if it wants to maximise

growth opportunities is ensuring it builds today for tomorrow’s needs and that the cost of that building is intergenerational and do not all fall on the shoulders of today’s ratepayers.

It has now wrapped up its workshops on this year’s three-yearly review of the long-term plan and the document will become public property in April. Across the

district community meetings will be held, submissions will be made and in May the council will hear those submissions and take on board the thoughts and opinions of the people before the document is signed off in late June.

This year it will need more than $29.6 million in rates money to run the district.

FACTS ABOUT THE DISTRICT

ISSUES FACING THE DISTRICT Environmental sustainability: The district faces potential issues in both water quality and availability. Changing land use and intensification mean the district will face increasing constraints on water availability and limitations on nutrient discharges. This may slow economic growth.

Population growth: The district needs to maintain a relatively high level of net migration to keep its population growing. However, this will result in an increase in demand for council services. Population changes will need to be carefully monitored to ensure planning decisions reflect unexpected change.

A growing population will also mean the council needs to ensure sufficient land is zoned residential to allow the extra 1070 houses likely to be needed over the next 10 years to be built.

The council reviews its district plan in 2018.

Changing face of the district: The district’s population is not only ageing it is becoming more ethnically diverse.

The median age is expected to increase to 44 by 2031 and that will mean an increase in demand for some facilities including elderly persons’ housing.

Increasing diverse ethnicity may also mean a changing demand for some services and facilities.

Roading: There is increasing pressure on the district’s roads because of land use changes and subsequent increases in heavy traffic.

There is strong community demand to improve the condition of the district’s roads but the New Zealand Land Transport Agency determines how much it will subsidise the council’s roading spend. Each year the council has pumped unsubsidised money from rates in to boost its roading budget.

To be able to run the district, rates will rise by 6.5 per cent next year, but the increase will not be spread evenly across the district driven by special projects that may be rated only for the ratepayers who use a service or facility.

These are called targeted rates.

Hydroslide: The community has indicated it is happy to see $2.5 million spent on top level water slides in the new EA Networks Centre. During the long term plan consultation process people will be asked when they want this money spent and how they want the project to be paid for.

Stockwater: For more than 130 years the council has provided a stockwater service across the district, but in recent years it has begun reducing the size of the 2583km network. This is continuing.

broad outlook, a smiling face and time holding one’s breath have helped three readers win prizes from Smith and Church Appliances in the 2015 Guardian Summer Photo Competition.

The dozens of entries provided a snapshot of what Mid Cantabrians got up to over the summer holidays, with plenty of photos of people enjoying lakes, mountains, pools and gardens.

Jo Skilling and Robyn Hood were winners in an adult section that attracted more than 50 entries.

Jo’s entry, of her son gazing over Lake Tekapo, made use of all sorts of visual elements to make an interesting photograph. The photo has contrasting colour, is

Robyn’s entry would be familiar to families everywhere – a chocolate-covered face in the throes of eating an icecream. It captures his infectious – toothy and toothless – smile and the mess that accompanies many a hot day. It is a photo where the subject’s character becomes the subject.

■ METHVEN MASONIC LODGE

Schools, students assisted Nine former Mount Hutt College students and two Methven primary schools were given bursary assistance recently from members of the Methven Masonic Lodge No. 51.

It was an annual lodge scholarship.

Lodge Master worshipful brother George Currie said the students were all heading for higher education and training. It was hoped the lodge’s financial contribution helped the students to achieve their goals.

Mr Currie said the donation to each of the local primary schools was to help children’s families who were finding it difficult to fund additional school events when asked.

“The additional primary schools presentation is considered a very valuable one for families needing help,” he said.

Nicole lands her dream job back in her home town

Nicole Cullimore is an Ashburton woman who landed her dream job right back here in Ashburton.

It all started when an afterschool position at Phoenix Preschool sparked her love of teaching.

During the school year she would help with the end of day clean up, and over the holiday period worked during the day helping out wherever she was needed.

“After I turned 17 or 18 I was able to relieve, that was really cool it made you aware of the intricacies of teaching.”

Miss Cullimore said she thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it was one that was rather eye opening.

“I loved it, and I discovered there was a lot to it I wasn’t aware of [the] different philosophies and systems.”

After high school, she headed south to Dunedin where she studied towards a Bachelor of Education, endorsed in Early Childhood.

After graduating, she was keen to get in to the workforce as soon as she could.

Getting a job in teaching can be hard, so you have to go where the jobs are, she said.

Coming back to work in her home town didn’t faze her.

Miss Cullimore was keen to come back to Ashburton and Phoenix Preschool happened to have a job opening.

“It’s different coming back and working than what it was as a student,” she said.

here was the time he lost his arm in a farm accident, the times he uttered phrases of the utmost wisdom, and the time he witnessed the great Ashburton flood.

These were some of the intriguing stories which could be shared about a common ancestor for a group of family members which gathered in Ashburton last weekend.

The man was William Lill, and the group were his and his brother George’s descendants and their families, commemorating a 150th reunion.

Mr Lill sailed on the Mermaid to New Zealand, leaving his home in Lincolnshire England where he was a farm worker.

His name did not appear on the passenger list, resulting in Lill family speculation years later that he may have been a member of the ship’s crew and not a passenger.

Upon landing he walked from Lyttelton to Christchurch.

It was 1867, two years after George had arrived. In the city centre he saw bullocks tied to a tree, and the square in which the Christchurch Cathedral had yet to be built. Outside of the centre, houses were made of sod and settlers cooked in camp ovens in the open air.

He went to Templeton where he worked on the land for about eight years, but lost his arm when working a threshing mill.

He was oiling the machine’s mill drum when his arm caught in a driving belt and had to be amputated above the elbow.

The accident necessitated a change of employment, and he came to Ashburton in 1875, landing the job as Ashburton’s first bridge keeper. The bridge was a joint road-rail bridge and Mr Lill’s duties likely included having to stop horse-drawn vehicles from crossing when trains were coming, as well as keep the risk of fire at bay.

He later went into partnership with Thomas Taylor who was a baker and confectioner in the town and in 1876 married

his daughter Clara. The couple were the first to be married in a church in Ashburton, the Primitive Methodist Church which was in Wills Street.

Mr Lill then took up farming and was at Newlands for 13

years before buying land at Willowby, where he and Mrs Lill moved with their six children in 1890. The family members worked hard and a herd of more than 20 cows was milked morning and night. Mr Lill held the

land up until his death at the age of 92 in 1939. He worked it himself for many years, surprising many with the dexterity with which he performed tasks despite having only one arm.

One year, just before World War

One, he took 36,000 bushels of grain off his farm. Of that, 13,000 bushels were oats. Mr Lill’s obituary notice in the Guardian said “his record of 62 years in farming was one few men in New Zealand could have

equalled”. Mr Lill, with an old friend, had also bought land at Highbank.

In 1875 Mr Lill was involved in the building and opening of the Primitive Methodist Church – the first church in Ashburton.

He was a witness of the great flood of 1878, where the north branch of the Ashburton River broke its banks and flowed through the domain and flooded the town. A man riding a horse on East Street was said to have drowned in the flood waters.

Mr Lill had strong views on the need for a wide bridge across the Ashburton River, and was later able to successfully agitate for this.

After bringing up his large family he plunged exuberantly into public life at the age of 64, the Ashburton book Between the Wind and the Water says. It described Mr Lill as outspoken, energetic and that he “always talked very good sense”.

It was at the local body elections of 1911 that Mr Lill gained a seat on the county council.

He represented the Ashburton Riding and gave energetic attention to the administration of the council, spending unlimited time on council business.

Between the Wind and the Water said despite the loss of his arm he could cope with most things except tying a tie. He thus always wore a butterfly collar without a tie.

In one group council photograph the photographer, thinking he had a fault in the negative, carefully sketched in the missing tie. With one arm and the stump of the other, Mr

Lill could carry two 40-pound buckets of milk, wheel a heavy barrow, and drive his Model A Ford at a speed which involved him in several near misses.

When his car did hit a pole and burst into flames he swiftly unloaded it and walked home, to announce: “Well, I saved the groceries.”

Footprints on the sands of time, he was fond of saying, are not made by those who sit down.

He also served on the hospital board and was also known to say that a well man could look after himself, but that a sick man needed all the care he could be given.

He also served on the electric power board, road boards and dairy boards, school committees and secondary school boards, the farmers’ union, the wheat pool and the no-licence council.

He was a local preacher and held other offices in the Methodist Church, and didn’t hesitate to state his strong views on Sunday observance, church attendance and temperance.

In 1932 the council and boards on which he served presented him with a gold medal.

It was engraved “Honour to whom Honour is due”.

THE REUNION

shburton’s Allan Lill, great grandson of William, said the reunion had been a great get-together of family members and the perfect opportunity to recollect members’ mutual heritage.

About 100 attended, from throughout New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

The weekend began on Waitangi Day evening with a registration meet-and-greet event at Hotel Ashburton, followed by a Saturday walk at Ashburton Cemetery amongst the headstones. William and Clara are buried there, as are many of their descendants.

There was an official welcome by Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay at a Saturday night dinner at the hotel. On Sunday there was a visit to Dunsandel, where George Lill settled all those years ago, and a church service.

Those attending the reunion donated two picnic tables to Ashburton, which have been installed with a commemorative plaque at the south end of the Ashburton River bridge.

Phoenix searching for win

By Daniel Richardson A temporary stadium in Lower Hutt has never looked so good for the Wellington Phoenix.

Coming off a week where they suffered two losses on the road, the slumping Phoenix need to make a return to the winner’s circle today when they host the sixth-placed Melbourne City.

Due to the Cricket World Cup, which left Westpac Stadium unavailable, the Phoenix had to think outside the box with regards to a few of their home games this season, so they’re playing at a makeshift venue in Lower Hutt.

The Hutt Recreation Ground is more famous among locals for its cricket and rugby exploits down the years but professional football will be on display this weekend. As of last night, only 500 tickets were available and around 9000 should be in attendance.

“It’s going to be really exciting,” Phoenix skipper Andrew Durante said.

“Obviously it’s a really close stadium. People are going to be experiencing the game from a really close position, not like Westpac Stadium. So I think the fans are going to love it.”

Durante joked that he and few other Phoenix players would need to tone down their language as the stands were within earshot of the pitch.

“This stadium’s going to be pretty exciting for everyone and

there’s a real buzz around, so we are hyped up for it. We need to be beating these teams that are below us to make sure we stay in this top four.”

Wellington are fourth on the A-League ladder but it is congested near the pointy end of the standings and the Phoenix need to get back on track.

They were unlucky not to take a point from their 3-2 defeat against Brisbane last week but their 2-0 loss to Western Sydney on Sunday was hurtful as they were given few options by a desperate Wanderers outfit.

Despite the rough run, Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick said his side hadn’t dropped their heads

at training this week.

“I’ve never seen the confidence so high after two defeats,” Merrick said. “If we get our game right we have no need to fear any other team in the league.”

There were no injury concerns for Merrick this week and he will likely employ the same squad against City that lost to the Wanderers. Seldom-used midfielder Matthew Ridenton hurt his knee while playing for the club’s reserve side last week and could be out for up to five weeks.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix have signed Auckland-born winger Kwabena Appiah for the rest of this season and the 2015-2016

football campaign.

Appiah was on the books of the Western Sydney Wanderers but left the club by mutual consent last month and impressed Merrick during a recent threeday trial in Wellington.

“I like the way Ernie Merrick has the boys playing. It is exciting,” the 22-year-old Appiah said.

“I can’t wait to be a part of it and the boys made me feel welcome right from the start.”

Appiah, who was part of Western Sydney’s victorious Asian Champions League squad last year, will arrive in the capital on Monday.

Breakers must find way forward

By Kris Shannon There were plenty of positives to emerge from the Breakers’ loss to Adelaide, but Tom Abercrombie cut through the noise to find the cold truth.

“If you want to be a championship team,” he said following Thursday’s five-point defeat, “those are the kind of games you’ve got to win.”

The Breakers could soon have a chance to test that theory. Both sides are heading to the playoffs and, judging on their efforts at Vector Arena, three games between the teams would be a worthy way to decide a championship.

Before the Breakers earn a chance to recapture their crown, though, they must arrest a slide that has seen them drop three of their last four games, with the first chance to do so coming in Perth on Sunday in their penultimate game.

But the back-to-back defeats will hardly trouble Dean Vickerman, considering his team were already safely ensconced inside the competition’s top two before both encounters.

They also played pretty damn well against Adelaide, undone only by an irrepressible opposition who have now won eight straight and the bounce of the ball that saw potentially gamechanging shots from Abercrombie and Mika Vukona rim out late in the final quarter.

The Breakers also held a bit back, according to their coach, mindful that what would be a fitting grand final series could instead arrive in the semis.

“Did we show everything tonight? Nah, there would be some different things we would show if we played them again,” Vickerman said. “Most people would consider [Adelaide] the hottest team in the league right now. I was pleased we were able to find

a way to get back in it and get a lead. You take real positives out of the fight we showed.”

That fight was spearheaded by a career-high 26 points from Corey Webster, almost matching the game-winning effort of 28 from Jamar Wilson, while

Cedric Jackson made up for a poor shooting night (4-18 from the floor) with his second tripledouble of the season.

But the defence left room for improvement and, after rallying from 12 points back in the final five minutes, the execution down the stretch was far from flawless.

“It’s just disappointing because we gave ourselves a good shot at the end and couldn’t quite get it done,” Abercrombie said. “We’ve done a pretty good job the rest of the year of closing out games. [Thursday] didn’t go our way but there’s still a lot of confidence in this team when we find ourselves in those situations.”

Those situations are almost certain to arise in the semifinals, when the Breakers will either paint the latest chapter in their rivalry with Perth or face a rematch against Adelaide.

Carter injury adds to problems

By Patrick McKendry Rebels 20 Crusaders 10 If Todd Blackadder thought the Crusaders could only improve in the second half of their opening match against the Rebels in Christchurch, he needed only wait 20 minutes or so after the re-start and the almost inevitable injury to Dan Carter.

Carter appeared to tweak his right calf when fielding a wild pass on his dead ball line, but for whatever reason stayed on despite favouring it, and his charged-down kick led to the try which effectively won it for the Rebels.

At 20-10 to the visitors with 13 minutes remaining, the Crusaders were in deep trouble, but with Colin Slade on the park at fullback, it was a complete mystery as to why Carter remained on until the 74th minute.

To compound matters, just as the Crusaders were launching their comeback against a 14-man Rebels, prop Owen Franks lost the ball on the line.

This year marks the 20th Super Rugby season, a significant anniversary perhaps, but for the traditionally slow-starting Crusaders, some things don’t change. There are some ship graveyards less rusty and better organised than the men from Christchurch last night.

Led by hard-nosed Wallaby Scott Higginbotham, the Melbourne-based team recruited well in the off-season, including signing Kiwi Mike Harris from the Reds, and the Crusaders for whatever reason have always struggled against them.

They are a team not usually renowned for their defensive steel – they’re better at the high-octane attacking stuff, but at AMI Stadium they needed only make their tackles and wait for the in-

evitable Crusaders mistake.

There was a sense of inevitability around that error on halftime _ the Crusaders, playing with a strong southerly at their backs, were in possession but gave it away but lost a man to the sinbin and gave away three points for good measure.

Halfback Mitchell Drummond, who was steady otherwise, was shown a yellow card by referee Nick Bryant, who had a busy night.

Blackadder’s team struggled in their pre-season matches, but the common consensus was that with the added quality of Richie McCaw, and playing at home, they would be far too good for the visitors; in fact, a bonus point for scoring more than four tries might even be a possibility.

In the end they didn’t even get a losing bonus point.

Without the resting Sam Whitelock, Kieran Read or Israel Dagg, the Crusaders strug-

gled to get anything going.

Even their set piece, put under pressure by the Reds last weekend, needs a huge amount of improvement.

They managed only three points during the time halfback Nic Stirzaker was sinbinned for his alleged early stomp on McCaw, which resulted in a reversed penalty, and the home side would have been disappointed by the ease in which lock Lopeti Tomani stretched out.

Ben Funnell responded from a lineout drive for the Crusaders, but rather than kick on, they went into reverse, the Rebels assisted by those constant errors. Styrzaker’s opportunist try, when he sprinted away after captilising on Carter’s chargeddown kick, was a good reward for his team’s grit and nous.

No duds in Chiefs’ line-up

By Kris Shannon The Chiefs are often lauded for their depth but how do they habitually develop such a quality?

The answer can be gleaned by examining the six months leading up to tonight’s seasonopener with the Blues at QBE Stadium.

First, the coaching staff assessed what went wrong during an inconsistent previous campaign and searched for areas of weakness.

They then identified talent from around the country to fill those holes, with little attention paid to a player’s age or experience.

And, finally, they placed trust in those players to perform from the outset, naming in their runon XV three Super Rugby debutants with another three coming off the bench.

That simple three-step strategy develops depth in a squad and, while every team attempts a similar approach, the Chiefs have in recent times mastered it.

“We’ve got a history that we’ve built up over three of four years of putting our faith in anyone we’ve selected,” said assistant coach Andrew Strawbridge. “We go through a thorough process when we ID people and we truly believe that if we’ve signed someone they’re good enough.

“The teams that do well in this competition historically are the teams with a fair bit of depth and the teams that have a lot of faith in their playing roster,” Strawbridge said. “We’ve probably rotated our playing roster more than most and that’s a reflection of the faith we have.”

championship-winning midfield, among others, are duelling for a spot beside Sonny Bill Williams.

Charlie Ngatai won that duel in week one due to a combination of his own form and an injurydisrupted pre-season for Seta Tamanivalu.

“Any time you run out you have an opportunity to make a statement,” Strawbridge said.

“Charlie gets the first chance to make a statement and say, ‘I’m the man who you should really consider every time you’re picking a 13’.”

Humble start to Piutau’s big year

By Patrick McKendry Charles Piutau wanted a low-key return to the Tongan village where his dad’s people come from.

He didn’t want a fuss – he was happy the news of his stay broke when he was leaving – but in the end the attention he got was welcome.

The visit to Falevai on the island of Vava’u during his short break at the start of the year provided the 23-year-old Blues and All Blacks outside back with a mix of emotions. It was both refreshing and humbling, a good grounding at the start of what could be a massive year for him.

“They’re big on rugby, it is on certain TV channels there,” he said. “They are proud people – even seeing a Tongan in the All Blacks makes them happy. Meeting people in the streets, they would say ‘it’s good to see a Tongan there, represent us well’.

“It was refreshing, connecting back with my roots,” he said of the trip with an uncle. “I tried to lie low. I didn’t want any media to find out, but they eventually did. It was cool meeting the locals and my extended family.”

There was plenty of banter bubbling beneath the surface too, about Charles playing for New Zealand and 29-year-old big brother Siale, a centre, aligning himself with Tonga. The pair could play against each other at the World Cup – the All Blacks and Tonga are in the same pool.

“If we’re lucky enough to both be there,” Piutau said.

“I’ve never played with him – only in backyard footy.

It will be interesting. I’ve only played against him in couple of sevens games and in ITM Cup pre-season. It feels different and awkward.” Siale, a former Counties and Chiefs player, now plies his trade for Yamaha in Japan.

“Falevai” translates as “water house” on English, the village surrounded by sandy beaches, clear water and untouched islands nearby. It is an idyllic little place, though basic, said Piutau who, was born in Auckland.

ethven’s Braden Currie is confident he can defend his Coast to Coast crown today.

The absence of Richard Ussher - the five-time winner come new race director - has given the defending champion confidence of a rare three-peat.

It is not cockiness.

Currie, 28, is just an athlete sure of his abilities and he will lay down the challenge to his rivals this morning.

He is so far unrivalled on the mountain run and it is over Goat Pass that he has made his race-winning break before doing enough to hold on for a six minute win in 2013 and a bigger 20 minutes win last year.

He will look to do the same today.

With another year of competing at the highest level in varying multisport races around the globe, Currie will be hard to beat.

Already boasting blistering pace to bound over boulder and stone, he has continued to sharpen up his paddling and biking.

“When I first did the longest day I gained the understanding

that I could do it, then the next year I knew I could race it,” Currie said.

“This year I am at the point where I can race it as hard as I can for 11 hours.”

If he emerges from the mountains with any semblance of a lead it will take a big effort or a disaster to deny him.

Currie identified his three biggest rivals as Trevor Voyce, Sam Manson and Sam Clarke.

Voyce has taken a step back from adventure racing to focus on the Coast to Coast, while Manson and Clarke have spent the last six weeks on the course.

There will be others who will give it a good crack too but Currie believes he has it in him to go the distance – a hard 254km slog – again.

“I know that there’s a good group of guys that have committed a huge amount of time in their preparation for this year’s Coast to Coast.

“I also know that there will be a big target on my back – all these guys will be out to beat me.

“But that’s just more encouragement for me to train harder and push myself.”

If they can’t catch him, Currie will become only the second

male competitor to win a hattrick of titles.

Only nine-time winner, Steve Gurney, has won the race three times in a row – winning an incredible seven straight races from 1997 to 2003.

Ussher went back-to-back twice in 2005-2006 and in 2011-2012 but for the last two years he had to chase Currie to the finish line in Sumner.

However, Ussher will beat him there today, as the new race director waits to congratulate the winner, who he is tipping to be Currie.

“He is racing really well and as long as he is healthy I think it will be hard to stop him making it three in a row,” Ussher said.

The women’s race is expected to be a thriller with defending champion Jess Simson up against two-time winner Elina Ussher, 2013 Australasian Multisport champion Simone Maier and experienced multi-sport veteran Rachel Cashin.

Also contesting the longest day is Ashburton’s Greg Roadley, his third one-day race, and Laura Thomas is stepping up to the one-day after she finished fourth in the women’s two-day last year.

Nesbitt flies flag for local hopes

Methven’s Rob Nesbitt is in the hunt in the two-day Coast to Coast when racing resumes today.

Nesbitt was fourth in last year’s two-day event and was sitting fourth after day one yesterday.

The two-day individuals and teams had the first two stages, the 55km bike followed by the 33km mountain run, and will complete the journey with the kayak along the Waimakariri and bike to Sumner beach.

Nesbitt is 7.25 minutes behind leader Nathan Jones who reached Klondyke corner in 5.10:11.

James Kay is 41st with a time of 7.37:47 and rugby referee Graham Shaw clocked 8.03:56

Jeremy Savage and Mark Saunders are sixth the tandem, a new two-day category this year where teams of two complete the course together.

Savage and Saunders had to bike and run in close proximity yesterday and will paddle in supplied double kayaks this morning before riding together to the finish.

Greg Hubbard and Ryan Ford are 22nd overall in the two-day teams, with a time of 6.43:28.

Harley Davies and Matthew William Burberry are 23rd overall a minuet back.

The mixed team of Kayla Frew and Hayden Bonnington are seventh, and 63rd overall, with a time of 8.09:19.

Dan Dwyer and Phil Rogers stopped the timer at 8.11:03.

Black Caps as ready as can be

All the pre-World Cup talk, the buildup and conjecture can be put where it belongs, starting today when New Zealand meet Sri Lanka in the opening match at Hagley Oval.

Brendon McCullum for one can’t wait.

He rates this New Zealand squad the best of the four he’s been involved in.

“The style of play is something we’re comfortable with,” he said yesterday.

“We’ve got a nice mix of youth and experience and a team that I’m really comfortable taking into the World Cup and we’ll give ourselves a good chance.”

But all the huff and puff masks one important point: “Whether you go into a tournament as underdogs, dark horses or favourites, it’s all irrelevant once the game starts,” the New

Zealand skipper said.

“It drums up energy, anticipation and expectation, and that’s great. But once the game actually starts it’s about the event in its purest form. Someone wins, someone loses.”

He hasn’t detected much edginess in his camp, but expects there will be some, and that’s fine, be in the “loud and bolshie” kind or the quiet, hunker down variety.

New Zealand are as ready as they can be. Boxes have been ticked.

It doesn’t mean New Zealand are bound for glory. There’s no guarantees. But they are good to go.

Pin him down on a major fear he has in playing terms and McCullum, when asked who he fancied after the three top picks – Australia, South Africa and his own team – preferred to dwell on the individual game breakers.

“They can turn a game in blink

of an eye. You’re dominating a game, in a position of authority and one of those matchwinners comes out and takes game away from you.

“So you respectfully look at every team as a definite threat.”

And what of the skipper, on whose shoulders so much rests and who has done sterling work for the last year? How will he have slept last night?

“I sleep well most nights, but not that long normally,” he said.

“I’ll be fine. It’s obviously a big game, but it’s a game of cricket and I love playing it.

“What’s the worst that can happen?”

No one in the room proferred a response but McCullum has it about right.

New Zealand won’t name their XI until this morning, however the only debating point was likely to be the third seamer to work alongside Trent Boult and Tim Southee.

It is expected to be either seasoned Kyle Mills, or speedster Adam Milne, who offers a distinct point of difference.

Mitchell McClenaghan, for all his tremendous wicket taking rate, appears slightly behind the others, which is unlucky for him.

If body language is a useful guide, Sri Lanka looked a picture yesterday.

Players clowned about on the outfield, there was plenty of laughter.

Lasith Malinga, the focus of so much pre-game speculation, got through a lively workout off his full runup, and at good pace, alongside the match pitch, then plonked himself in a chair beside the nets and cracked jokes with Tillekaratne Dilshan.

Mahela Jayawardene struck an exquisite drive which sped back past the bowler. Kumar Sangakkara, who was off to watch the Crusaders play last night, was energetic in his wick-

etkeeping drills.

Chief selector and second most-capped ODI player with 445 appearances, Sanath Jayasuriya, rolled his arm in the nets; captain Angelo Mathews looked relaxed and talked of trying to take advantage of the pressure which might rest on the cohosts.

They have been in New Zealand since before Christmas.

Now they are long since ready to play. Mathews believes all that time spent will prove worthwhile.

Today will tell.

The bottom line is that in terms of advancing to the quarter-finals, the outcome probably won’t matter, other than perhaps affect where they finish in the standings.

Still, for both teams far better to start as they mean to go on.

In any case, at least the cup is off and running.

Energised Ronchi dreaming of world cup glory If you want to judge the mood of a cricket team, talk to the wicketkeeper.

They are the pulse of the side.

Not necessarily the captain – indeed relatively rarely – but they’re at the core of the operation in the field, the gee-up guy keeping fielders on the job.

Luke Ronchi reckons it’s relatively easy to detect when things aren’t spot on.

“Everyone knows,” he said

yesterday. “You can feel a presence if people aren’t quite up or haven’t got that energy.

“Baz (captain Brendon McCullum) is the same. He can tell.

Once you get to that position someone needs to start talking, get them worked up.”

He admitted during a series like the elongated seven-game rubber against Sri Lanka it can happen when faced with the same opponents so often you’re

just about on Christmas card terms with them.

“That monotony can hit in, but for something like this, I can’t see how it’s ever possible, how you can’t be pumped up for a game.”

That “something” is the World Cup and be very sure Ronchi won’t suffer from that.

His back story is well known but the bullet points are: Moved with his family to Australia at

seven; made the West Australian side, hammered a 51-ball century against Queensland in the 2007-08 summer; played three T20s and four ODIs for Australia – including hitting a 28-ball 64 in the Caribbean – before falling down the pecking order; then decided to head home where he cracked the New Zealand team in 2013, becoming the first player to represent two test-playing countries since Ke-

pler Wessels 20 years earlier.

This week a television reporter asked Ronchi if any of his family or friends “back home” ... that was as far as he got.

“This is home mate,” Ronchi shot back.

New Zealand are among the favourites to reach the world cup final on March 29, but have never reached the decider.

“You definitely need to dream about that stuff,” Ronchi said.

Trampoliner flying as coach Nicci Glanville spent the week of her 40th birthday putting her mental limits to the test during Federation International Gymnastics (FIG) trampoline coaching examinations.

But it was worth it: she gained a first equal in the exams, tying with Australian Jessie Tulett.

During the week-long academy, Glanville did a series of gruelling examinations and attended lectures.

They covered bio-mechanics, anatomy, physiology and psychology.

Glanville got 100 per cent for her psychology and anatomy tests.

“I aced it,” she said.

The academy in Auckland from January 23 to 30 was attended by 13 international coaches.

They were from Australia, Great Britain, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Singapore and Spain.

It was the first time the New Zealand Gymnastics Federation, also known as GymSports New Zealand, had hosted an FIG Academy.

Along with Trampoline Level 2 – Glanville’s new qualification – the federation also hosted Level 2 academies for three other disciplines: women’s artistic, men’s artistic and rhythmic. There were more than 65 coaches from nine international federations.

She had been competing and coaching in gymnastics and trampoline for 26 years in Scot-

land and New Zealand.

Along with the Trampoline Level 2 FIG, she is also a GymSports New Zealand presenter for the Canterbury area, and a qualified disability coach.

She has been a coach since aged 17.

It had led to her, and fellow Gym Sports New Zealand coach Nicky Horrell, co-founding Dynamic Gymnastic Sports.

“Gymnastics and trampolining is her passion,” Horrell said.

“The experience she has got is just phenomenal.”

“I’ve been riding in a lot of events that I used to race years ago. It’s been so much fun, so relaxed and I’ve had the chance to catch up with a lot of people I’ve

not seen for ages,” Cooper said.

“It’s been good to also give a bit back as well and I have loved it.”

It’s now all business for Cooper at the weekend.

“I would like to be able to wear the jersey when I compete back on the world circuit for sure, but that is not going to be easy.

“I have probably prepared a little more specifically for this race and I know that Sam and I will continue to push each other not just in this race but the rest of the year.”

Bike crash A crash in the closing stages couldn’t stop Dean Rattray getting his team home first in the Mid Canterbury Mountain Bike Club’s relay race this week. With 500m to go on the Ashburton River Trail course, Rattray crashed heavily on a sharp corner but managed to pick himself up and secure the win for his team of Sam Letham and Matt Reid in a time of 43 minutes 52 seconds. Second overall was the combination of Clayton Howard, Grant Nisbet, Jelle Hendriksen in a time of 46mins 11s, with Nigel Douglas bringing his team home third just, 15 seconds back. The club will be holding another event on February 24, start and finish at the Ashburton Bridge at 6.30pm.

Slow start for Kiwis

Games champ wants jeresy back Commonwealth Games champion Anton Cooper wants to regain his national jersey in what is promising to be an exciting showdown at the New Zealand Mountain Bike Championships in Rotorua today.

AFL recruits Essendon have started an urgent nationwide recruiting drive after resolving the impasse with the AFL over their pre-season games. The matches next month against St Kilda, Melbourne and GWS will go ahead as planned, despite coach James Hird admitting the preparation will not be ideal. Captain Jobe Watson, reigning club champion Dyson Heppell and veteran Dustin Fletcher are among 25 senior players who will not play. Bennett backs NRL aid for Titans

BY LAINE CLARK Given the choice, even master NRL coach Wayne Bennett would pick the beach over the footy if based on the Gold Coast.

And it’s why Bennett believes the NRL will always find it hard to win over the tourist strip.

But he doesn’t think that is an excuse to give up on the region and has supported the NRL digging deep to keep the Gold Coast Titans afloat.

The NRL’s All Stars game looms as another sporting casualty on the Gold Coast after initial poor sales for Friday night’s clash.

NRL boss Dave Smith this week stopped short of guaranteeing the All Stars game would remain an annual fixture on the calendar in the wake of the disappointing Gold Coast reaction.

But Bennett believed the concept’s future should not hinge on Gold Coast sales, saying history had shown sport was a hard sell in the region.

Rugby league’s Chargers, basketball’s Blaze and soccer’s Gold Coast United have all come and gone over the years.

And it is believed the Titans are battling to keep their heads above water with speculation the NRL has contributed sig-

nificant funds to help them out.

Bennett was not surprised by the lacklustre All Stars ticket sales but said they had to be put in perspective.

“You’ve got to look at the history of sport on the Gold Coast,” the NRL All Stars and Broncos coach said.

“Basketball, soccer, rugby league - they’ve all had their crisis moments.

“It’s a big tourist area.

“It’s transient. People are in and out of here on a regular basis. The lifestyle here is totally different too.

“You’ve got a choice. I know where I’d want to be - on the

beach most times.”

The Titans were recently in the news again with reports claiming the NRL was ready to step in and take over the Gold Coast licence due to financial concerns.

It came in the wake of ex-Titans boss Michael Searle claiming he wants to sell his $4.4 million shareholding in the club and walk away.

For the record, Titans chairwoman Rebecca Frizelle claims the club’s board boasting wealthy businessman Darryl Kelly, who owns 47.2 per cent of the club, is not in trouble.

no problem with the NRL propping up the Titans.

“If they (Titans and NRL) think they can make it work then good on them,” he said.

“The game’s big enough now to be able to do that.

“The game’s never been good at that but the present administration do that pretty well.

“They’re certainly supporting some clubs that wouldn’t have been supported in the past.

“The NRL have got four clubs they’re probably helping in one way or another.

“The Gold Coast is one of them and I’m happy with that.”

Borrego battles to make side Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander says it’s not a fait accompli prolific Jamaican-born shooter Carla Borrego will make the World Cup team for her adopted country and she still needs to tick plenty of boxes.

Borrego 31, is eligible to represent the Diamonds after getting Australian citizenship and having sat out at least one four-year World Cup cycle, having not played for the country of her birth at that tournament since 2003.

The 193cm shooter is a twotime premiership player with Adelaide Thunderbirds in the trans-Tasman competition, in which she has been one of the heaviest and most consistent scorers since 2010.

She has attended past Australian camps at Alexander’s invitation to help prepare the Diamonds for matches against Caribbean nations, but the coach said hadn’t spoken to the player specifically representing Australia.

However, Borrego has made it clear she aspires to do that.

Food prices rise in January

New Zealand crossbred wool, which accounts for the majority of the country’s production, increased 2.9 per cent in the latest auction on strong overseas demand.

The price for 35-micron clean wool, commonly used for carpets, rose to $5.30 per kilogram at this week’s auctions, from $5.15/kg the previous week, according

to AgriHQ. That’s 10 per cent ahead of February’s average price of $4.80/kg for the past five years.

Some 96 per cent of the 14,000 bales on offer at the combined North and South island auctions this week was sold, with strong buyer competition from China, India and Australasia as well as demand from the Middle East, Western Europe and the UK, according to New Zealand Wool

Services International.

“Price pressure is continuing to be brought on by buyers in need of prompt shipments of wool,” said AgriHQ agriculture analyst Ivan Luketina.

The price of lamb wool held at $6.55/kg this week, its highest level since April 2011, on relatively high volume, according to AgriHQ. Wool is New Zealand’s 14th largest commodity export.

New Zealand food prices rose in January, as a smaller, later apple crop drove prices for the fruit to the highest in 16 years, while kiwifruit, strawberries, tomatoes and lettuces all rose.

The food price index increased 1.3 per cent in January after a 0.3 per cent gain in December, according to Statistics New Zealand.

Prices gained 1.2 per cent from January 2014, again led by fruit and vegetables.

Prices of fruit and vegetables rose 8.3 per cent and typically record a seasonal rise in January but this year the effect was exacerbated by unfavourable weather, the government statistician said.

Who would own a postal business?

s it turns out, you do and you own it at a time where too many of us are abandoning letters for the ease of sending messages over the internet.

Taxpayer-owned New Zealand Post has been having a hard time keeping its business competitive in a world where text messages are the new telegrams.

It says letter volumes have dropped to the point where the average household receives letters just three times a week and that the decline looks set to continue.

New Zealand Post has told posties they will soon deliver standard post letters only three times a week. It has told New Zealanders they probably would not notice the difference.

That might be right but plenty of New Zealanders will notice the slow, sad demise of a service – and institution – that used to bring people together.

They will also notice the job losses and the political discussion about abandoning aspects of the service to private competition.

Change will continue to be a constant.

Previous changes have been significant and some have earned the rebuke of the communities most affected. It abandoned cuts to rural deliveries, but it has rationalised its postal network.

Postal services in Allenton were effectively rationalised last year, when the then-owner of the PostShop and KiwiBank retired and the service was re-offered as a postal agency.

Many were relieved when the local pharmacy stepped in to retain the postal service.

This might be the way of the world, particularly given how the world is treating postal services.

Overnight delivery is being cut in the United States and Canada is phasing out door-to-door delivery entirely.

New Zealand Post needs government approval to change delivery times but, with 265 million fewer items posted each year compared to 2002, it will be difficult to justify much opposition.

Especially when we, New Zealand Post’s owners, do not use it as much as we used to.

YOUR VIEW Anzac During a recent visit to the National Anzac Centre in Albany, Western Australia, I was given at random an Anzac Veteran by card whose service and life story I could electronically follow through the interpretive centre.

By chance my “veteran” happened to be an Ashburton boy by the name of Alan Stitt.

That was something of a coincidence as I was born and raised just an hour’s drive up the road, in Hornby and had also served in the New Zealand Army.

His story told me that he was born June 11, 1894, attended Christchurch Boys’ High, enlisted in the NZEF on December 3, 1914, and embarked on the HMNZT Athenic and had distinguished service earning a

DSO, MC and four mentions in despatches.

He had enlisted as a private but had his Territorial Army commission re-instated and was quickly promoted to major, finishing up as the youngest commanding officer in the NZEF. His full story can be found at nationalanzaccentre.com.au/ story/alan-duncan-stitt and I can highly commend the Anzac centre to any Kiwis visiting WA. There is a true sense that the “NZ” in ANZAC has not been overlooked and that New Zealand has been accorded its deserved recognition.

Alan Stitt later farmed in Kenya, re-enlisted for service in World War Two and died in Nairobi in October 1950 at the age of 56.

I

s there no end to the silliness of local bodies and their senior staff ?

A friend and I sat down not long ago and worked out that in my career as a journalist, I’ve probably attended about 10,000 meetings, about half of which were local body meetings in several countries, so I think I’ve had enough of a look to make some observations.

First of all, chairing a meeting in a style that evolved well before the First World War is a nightmare and totally unnecessary.

It is slow, ponderous and stultifyingly boring. And if I ever hear some pompous git shout out “point of order Mr Chair” again it will be too soon.

For those lucky people who’ve never attended a council meeting, I think shouting “point of order” means the shouter feels he (almost invariably a bloke) hasn’t had enough attention and wants his turn NOW. It’s like a baby throwing its toys out of the cot.

There are less aggressive and more user-friendly ways of running meetings, which can be picked up in a short workshop led by an experienced facilitator.

That saves time, money and

frustration.

The next, and probably most crucial, is that voters make up their minds about people and issues, not by the facts (which aren’t generally available to them), but by perception.

What is perception?

According to the Concise English Dictionary, it is the intuitive recognition of truth and of aesthetic quality etc.

In other words, we see what we think we see.

So in order for facts and opinions to come across as we want them to, we have to think very, very carefully how voters are likely to interpret our statements and behaviours, and adjust them accordingly.

And that does in no way mean veering away from the truth.

Most weeks there are demonstrations of how leaders all over the world come unstuck when they lie. At least it’s not a hanging or beheading offence here.

Since I’ve been back in

Ashburton I’ve seen a number of major issues debated, all unsatisfactorily in my book, because they have come to no real resolution, and there are a great many people angry about one, or the other, or all.

They include the second bridge, the sports and recreation centre and the art gallery and museum.

Now there’s the carry-on about Argyle Park.

How anyone can consider selling off green space is beyond me and my perception of those advocating it can’t be explained politely.

As a youngster I was advised, “take care of the land, they’re not making it anymore”.

No wonder the Argyle family is strongly objecting.

Some of the councillors are farmers and while it’s probably nothing for them to whack off a few acres, it’s a totally different picture for a loved and wellused park.

Back to the second bridge.

Too early 15%

Today’s online poll question Q: Would you send more mail if it would mean the postal service would stay the same?

I’m sure by the time there’s the money to build it, it will be ruled out by the need to get cars off the roads, and make use once again of our rundown railway system.

Now when we look to the sports centre and museum/gallery, I expect to be a frequent visitor to both.

But how could the councillors and their advisers miss the fact that ratepayers loathe and detest rate rises, full stop.

They hate unforeseen budget blow-outs even more, because they inevitably lead to rate rises.

So how could the council and its staff not perceive that building more than one major project in the same timeframe was too much?

Regardless of what the facts might be, these are seen as major drawings on the public purse.

Council communications and council “communicators” have really blown it this time.

Share a little of your precious time D ear friends, The Bible tells us there is a time for everything under the sun, but it doesn’t tell us just how quickly the time passes sometimes.

The familiar cry of “where has the summer gone?” is something that we will all have heard said in the past few days.

Many of those plans that we had for clearing out cupboards and re-arranging gardens and organising ourselves for the winter to come are still just that – plans!

Of course you may have done better than I, but in my case it’s pretty much the same each year.

I plan to do so much during the warm summer weather and either the weather doesn’t live up to expectations or the spare time is soaked up by something unexpected.

Is there something we can at

least learn from this?

Perhaps the most important lesson is to remember that time is just about the most precious thing that we have.

We have been given just a short time to spend on this lovely earth and, as Christians; we believe that God, as the author of all things, is also the creator of time itself. It’s up to us to use our time wisely and compassionately!

As we approach autumn and contemplate the shorter days of winter, is there some way we can spend our time helping

someone else?

For busy people the time goes just too fast, but for those dreading the loneliness of cooler days, or who are too elderly or infirm to get out the time hangs heavy.

Please think prayerfully about how you can share just a little of your precious gift of time this coming autumn and winter with someone who would really appreciate it.

In brief Erdogan attacks Obama Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reproached US President Barack Obama and other senior officials for not speaking out against the killings of three young Muslims in North Carolina this week. Erdogan said during a news conference in Mexico yesterday that the US administration should take a stance against the killings, saying their silence was “meaningful.” Erdogan said: “I ask Mr. Obama: where are you Mr. President?” An atheist with a reputation for bullying his neighbors has been charged with murder.

Two people shot The New Orleans Police Department says two people are in critical condition after a shooting along a Mardi Gras parade route in uptown. Police spokesman Frank Robertson says there was an altercation yesterday during which a person produced a firearm and shot two people. Robertson says one victim was struck in the neck and the other in the chest.

He says both were taken to a local hospital. Police said one suspect is in custody. No further details were immediately available. The shooting occurred during the Muses parade — the traditional kickoff to the Carnival weekend.

Barriers were set up, but the parade rolled on.

Eight killed despite truce Despite a peace deal and a looming ceasefire deadline, Ukraine said yesterday that eight soldiers were killed and 34 wounded.

The ceasefire is to be monitored by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s observer mission in Ukraine.

The next step, to begin on Monday, is to form a sizeable buffer zone between Ukrainian forces and Russia-backed re-

bels. Each side is to pull heavy weaponry back from the front line, creating a zone roughly 50-140 kilometres wide, depending on the calibre of the weapons.

The withdrawals are to be completed in two weeks.

Police say golfer Allenby not in a strip club A police detective investigating Robert Allenby’s ordeal in Hawaii says the three people seen leaving a wine restaurant with him are not believed to be connected to the case, and that the Australian golfer did not go to a strip club that night.

Det. John McCarthy of the Honolulu Police Department said evidence shows Allenby was not in the Club Femme Nu in the early morning of January 17 when his wallet, credit cards, cash and phone were taken.

“There is no evidence he was ever in that strip club,” McCarthy said. “Our investiga-

tion shows he was not at Club Femme Nu.” McCarthy said several Australians were in the strip club, but not Allenby. “It was a case of mistaken identity,” he said of reports indicating Allenby was there.

Patrick Owen Harbison, 32, was arrested on second-degree identity theft, second-degree attempted they and unauthorized possession of confidential information, police said.

That part of the case has been turned over to prosecutors.

He was arrested in the Oahu Community Correctional Center where he was being held on

a contempt warrant for an unrelated case. Police said Harbison has five felony convictions, including a felony drug conviction.

Still to be determined is what happened to Allenby after leaving Amuse Wine Bar on the night after he missed the cut in the Sony Open.

The saga generated interested when Allenby took a photo of his scraped and bloodied face and posted it to his Facebook page after he got back to his hotel. He first said he was beaten, robbed and thrown from the trunk of a car. He later said he was told that by

a homeless woman who helped him escape from a park.

Allenby said two weeks ago that “my story stays exactly the same,” though he had no memory of what happened during a 2-1/2 hour period from leaving the restaurant to waking up in a park that turned out to be no more than a block away.

He said video from the restaurant showed him leaving with three people he didn’t know. McCarthy said those people just happened to be leaving the restaurant at the same time, and video shows them returning minutes later.

Train derails; 11 dead A train derailed after hitting a boulder that had fallen on the track in southern India yesterday, killing at least 11 people and injuring dozens, officials said.

Railways Minister Suresh Prabu said the boulder fell from a nearby hill and derailed nine coaches and one food car. At least 42 people were hospitalised, including 17 in serious condition, after the accident near Bangalore, police officer Ranbir Sharma said.

Rescuers had to used gas cutters to open one badly crushed coach.

Accidents are common on India’s vast rail network, which carries 23 million people every day. They are often attributed to human and equipment errors.

Police officer arrested Authorities have arrested a police officer accused of badly injuring an Indian man who was visiting relatives in the state and the FBI has opened an investigation.

Madison Police Officer Eric Parker was charged with assault after responding to a call on February 6 about a suspicious person walking onto driveways and looking into garages, department officials said in a statement. Madison Police Chief Larry Muncey announced Parker will be fired hours after Sureshbhai Patel filed a federal lawsuit. The lawsuit says Patel suffered injuries including partial paralysis. Officers stopped Patel, 57, and tried talking to him but he spoke little English, authorities said. Chirag Patel has told local news media that his father has only been to America once before.

Patel said his father had to undergo surgery to fuse two vertebrae in his spine after being taken to the ground. Patel said his father is still unable to move his left leg.

Clashes near Chinese border kill dozens Clashes between Myanmar troops and ethnic Kokang rebels near the Chinese border have left 47 government soldiers dead and 73 wounded, state media said yesterday.

The Global New Light of Myanmar said there have been more than 13 clashes in the past several days between government troops and Kokang rebels near Laukkai close to the border, with the government carrying out five airstrikes. The number of rebel casualties was not immediately known.

It said the fighting has been serious enough for the government to inform China, which is concerned about the clashes because they force civilians to flee across the border.

The report said a Kokang renegade group led by former Kokang leader Phone Kya Shin attacked military stations with the objective of capturing Laukai, capital of the self-administered Kokang zone near the border more than 800 kilometres northeast of Yangon.

The newspaper quoted local residents as saying that Kokang rebels had infiltrated the area by working in plantations and had carried out attacks using rocket launchers and anti-aircraft guns.

The Kokang guerrillas were formerly the main fighting force for the now-defunct Burmese Communist Party until a ceasefire was signed with the thenmilitary government in 1989.

Phone Kya Shin and his commanders fled Myanmar in 2009 after government forces raided a Kokang weapons factory.

Since coming to power in 2011, the government of President Thein Sein has been trying to strike peace agreements with about a dozen ethnic rebel groups that have been fighting for decades for greater autonomy.

It has preliminary ceasefire pacts with most, but clashes occasionally occur with Kachin, Shan and other ethnic armed groups.

The ethnic parties say many questions need to be settled before further pacts are signed, which the government had hoped to do in March.

In most countries, February 14 is a highly commercialised day of romance. In Thailand, it’s also a time for strict warnings — and this year a new Twitter hashtag aimed at preventing premarital sex.

The Culture Ministry’s Moral Promotion Centre launched a widely publicised campaign earlier this week called “Just a Meal for Valentine’s Day” that urges teens to go home after their dinner dates.

Despite its well-earned reputation to the outside world as a freewheeling destination for sex tourism, Thailand’s socially conservative authorities are on a constant mission to uphold the country’s traditional Buddhist values among Thai people.

Mum pleads guilty to killing six newborns A US mother pleaded guilty yesterday to killing six of her newborns and storing their bodies in the garage, bringing a case prosecutors called uniquely heinous closer to resolution.

Megan Huntsman, 39, faces up to life in prison when she’s sentenced April 20. Her voice broke as she said “guilty” six times to answer for each count.

The guilty pleas are the result of a deal that could reduce her minimum sentence to five years, but “we’ll be shocked if she ever gets out,” Utah County attorney Jeff Buhman said.

The infants’ remains were discovered by Huntsman’s estranged husband, Darren West, in April 2014 as he gathered belongings from the home they had shared in Pleasant Grove, a city of about 35,000. He called police after finding the first tiny body in a cardboard box. Authorities found the rest, seven in all, one of which they said

was stillborn.

Huntsman told police she immediately strangled or suffocated the newborns, wrapped them in cloth, put them in plastic bags, then packed them in boxes over a 10-year period from 1996 to 2006.

She told investigators she was addicted to methamphetamine at the time and didn’t want to care for the babies.

West made the discovery shortly after he was released from federal prison where he was sent eight years ago after pleading guilty to meth charges.

He was the father of each child and lived with Huntsman during the decade when they were killed, but police have said they aren’t investigating him in connection with the deaths.

West and Huntsman have three other children, who are with other family members.

He was not in court and has not spoken publicly about the case.

Air heiress appeals ‘nut rage’ case The daughter of Korean Air’s chairman has appealed against her conviction for violating aviation safety law during a “nut rage” incident that invited international ridicule.

Cho Hyun-Ah, a former executive vice president of the airline, was handed a one-year jail term yesterday, after being found guilty of safety breaches and assaulting cabin staff.

The main charge related to her decision to force a taxiing New York-Seoul KAL flight to return to its departure gate on December 5.

Cho had insisted on expelling the chief purser from the plane after taking exception to being served macadamia nuts in a bag, rather than a bowl.

Her defence team said yesterday it believed the district court

in Seoul had misinterpreted the aviation law in reaching its guilty verdict.

“The appeal was sent today to the high court, calling for the re-examination of her conviction and jail term,” one of Cho’s lawyers said on condition of anonymity.

Prosecutors had asked for a three-year jail sentence, but the judge said he had taken into ac-

count the fact that Cho had two young children and that her personal and professional reputation had been shattered.

In finding Cho guilty of illegally altering the course of a plane, the judge ruled that an aircraft should be deemed “in flight” from the moment it begins to move, even if it is still on the tarmac.

It is this distinction that the

defence team is most likely to challenge on appeal.

Cho’s behaviour triggered a huge public backlash in South Korea, where it was seen as emblematic of a generation of spoilt and arrogant offspring of owners of the giant family-run conglomerates, or “chaebols”, that dominate the national economy.
