Paving the way for refugees

Ashburton could well be New Zealand’s poster child when it comes to finding housing solutions for refugees, an immigration expert says.

At a hui in Ashburton yesterday, the first steps were taken in planning for the arrival of 10-15 refugees in the Ashburton District in August, with discussion centred around housing, education, health and community engagement.

Ministry of Business innovation and Enterprise (MBIE) advisor responsible for refugee housing, Christina Fordyce said that unlike many other refugee settlement areas, Ashburton had the ad-

vantage of good rental housing stocks.

While a mix of public and private sector rentals would be needed, Fordyce said the biggest challenge between now and then would lie in ensuring private landlords understood that refugees generally were excellent tenants.

“Experience in other parts of the country shows that these people made wonderful tenants, they want to better themselves and they want to be good tenants so they can move forward,” she said.

Often a refugee family would be looking for a property with a section that was large enough for them to grow vegetables. And often their goal was to

work, save and buy their own home.

There was inevitably some caution among private landlords when the first group of refugees arrived, and it required a little bit of education to remove some of their concerns, Fordyce said.

Housing was always secured before a refugee family arrived in a new community, and while Ashburton had good job opportunities, the arrival of refugees should not immediately be seen as an opportunity to gain new employees, she said.

Info evening for fostering

The Ashburton SPCA are hoping to grow their pool of foster parents for the many cats and kittens they see coming through their doors as kitten season approaches.

Currently there is only one regular foster mum of kittens that the centre can call on, and operations co-ordinator Ashlyn Wallace is hoping through holding an information evening later this month they might be able to start growing a list.

“There is a really good one (network of foster parents) in Christchurch, so hopefully we can get a small one going here,” she said.

Wallace said foster parents can often end up looking after a variety of kittens, such as ones that have not yet been weaned from their mothers who require regular feeding every few hours, to kittens over eight weeks old that have been weaned or even cats recovering from operations, even as serious as leg amputations.

The Ashburton Centre currently has facilities for its sick and injured animals, but not for healthy kittens, so adoptions are undertaken off the premises, from the foster carers’ homes or from the SPCA’s adoption clinic in Christchurch.

All costs are covered by the SPCA, including vet visits, food and litter trays.

“All we ask that you have is time, love and affection, a spare room that can be closed off for them to stay in and your own transport is important to get them to and from vet visits,” she said.

The SPCA are expecting to see an increase around the end of September once spring begins to kick in, but Wallace said they have been seeing kittens coming through at all times this year due to a mild winter.

The information evening will be held at Community House on August 21, and anyone intending to attend is asked to email ashlyn.wallace@spca.nz to register their interest beforehand.

The pair are planning to hold Let’s Chalk About Mental Health on August 31.

The event is held globally, and in New Zealand kicks off Suicide Awareness Month in September.

Williams and Sandys will be taking over the East Street checkerboard from midday to 2pm, and want as many people to come along as possible and join them in chalking messages of hope and inspiration.

They are planning a chill and chat zone to provide a comfortable space for people to visit, and aiming to have representatives and speakers from support groups and mental health organisations, as well as a sausage sizzle and face painting.

Williams said the suicide rate in Mid Canterbury was high across all age groups, reflecting a nationwide issue, and it was tragic to see youth in particular affected by this.

With a range of risk factors such as bullying, cyberbullying, issues at home, and mental illness, it was a complex problem.

“It’s sad that children of this age are even contemplating that,” she said.

But sweeping it under the carpet was not working with this age group nor any other, and events such as Let’s Chalk About It were important to bring the community together.

Williams and Sandys were at the stage of planning the event and hoped to get sponsors and support organisations on board.

They also wanted to introduce ongoing initiatives such as fundraising for petrol vouchers for people needing to access mental health services in Christchurch, and investigating establishing a drop-in centre in Ashburton where people wanting to talk could pop in.

M. Bovis farmers urged to opt in

Mid Canterbury farmers under active surveillance for the cattle disease mycoplasma bovis are being encouraged to opt in for a call or visit from the Farmers Assistance Programme.

The programme offers farmer-to-farmer help for those under active surveillance and worried about their status escalating.

Farmers can talk through the testing process and be prepared for what happens next, though 95 per cent of farms at this stage will be cleared.

The Ministry for Primary Industries is committed to eradicating the disease nationwide, tracing infected cattle and depopulating farms confirmed as having M. bovis.

As at August 9, 72 farms in the Ashburton District were under active surveillance and 25 were under notice of direction, restricting movements. There are two active farms in the district, while 24 have been cleared.

The Farmers Assistance Programme was set up to help farmers understand the process that followed a call from MPI to say they are on active surveillance.

Team members work with MPI, Rural Support Trust and the industry bodies to make sure farmers have the information and

help they need so they can move through the active surveillance stage as quickly and smoothly as possible.

The programme is being trialled for three months in the Ashburton District and may be rolled out nationwide if it is successful.

Programme co-ordinator Tineke Johnstone said the programme was a much-needed link in the chain for farmers under active surveillance.

“The farmer can choose to be contacted by a member of the FAP team, who will meet with them to provide clarity over the testing process, provide them with factual information to make decisions and talk through the next steps.”

She said the team could assist farmers with their NAIT system, liaise with MPI at a regional and national level, and problem solve if any issues arose during the testing process.

Johnstone and her husband Tony manage a 1100ha angus beef farm on Banks Peninsula, complemented with a fattening block at Methven. She is proficient in farm accounting and compliance software and has worked with farmers teaching them how to use computers through the RMPP programme.

Mattushek and Katie Flett.

Loos and her husband are equity dairy farmers who run a 200ha farm and 100ha run-off based in Hororata with 700 cows and young stock. She is hands-on in their farming business working within their team on a daily basis. Jodie has a healthcare background with experience in mental health, IT, and administration.

Bedford and her husband George live in Dorie on their 350ha farm, predominantly farming sheep, crop and dairy support. Emma has an administration background, managing the administration side of the farm, and lending a hand on the farm when needed, along with running her own small business parttime, and looking after their three young children.

Mattushek and her husband Shaun are hands-on equity partners in a 1050-cow dairy farm at Te Pirita. Prior to hands-on farming, she was in rural banking and her key strengths are finance, compliance and NAIT. Flett and her husband Hamish are 50:50 sharemilkers on a 625 cow farm near Temuka. Her 15year involvement in the dairying started by learning the industry from the ground up and she is now actively involved as a handson farmer and business administrator.

in the Mangere Refugee Centre but before that they will have been through an intensive interview process and may have been waiting for up to two years for the refugee process to be completed, said MBIE’s Sarah Ward.

They arrive with a resettlement

plan and Ashburton’s families will have their own service provider who is their on-the-ground support for 12 months, Ward said.

“But the gate doesn’t come down after 12 months. Its about making sure people can access mainstream services, that they’re integrating in

the community.”

It was important for both the refugees and their new community that their arrival was well planned and that the community was well prepared, she said.

The nationalities of the refugees is yet to be decided but currently

50 per cent are from the Asia Pacific region either as a country of origin or a country to which they had fled.

Moving on from yesterday’s hui, individual workshops will be held over coming months across a range of sectors, including education and health.

Nominations slow to come in

Nominations for the Methven Community Board are moving at a glacial pace and it is unknown whether an election will need to be held.

Nominations had reached four by early yesterday afternoon, but there are five vacancies, and six candidates are required for an election.

If no more nominations come in by the Friday midday deadline, the four eligible candidates would be declared elected by the Electoral Officer as soon as practicable, and an extraordinary vacancy would be created and a by-election required.

This was the case in the 2013 elections when only four candidates stood. At the last elections in 2016, seven candidates stood.

Nominations so far this round are from current members Sonia McAlpine, Ron Smith and chairman Dan McLaughlin, as well as first-timer and former Ashburton District Councillor Kelvin Holmes.

Fellow current members are Sarah Lock and vice chairman Hamish Gilpin.

Lock said yesterday she was still deliberating on whether or not to stand again, and had no further comment.

Gilpin said he would not be seeking re-election after already having completed four terms on the board, the last two as vice-chairman.

But he was not too worried about not enough people coming forward.

“People always leave it to the last minute, and I have been talking to several people who have the papers and are wavering. Hopefully there will be enough for an election,” Gilpin said.

He hoped to see some younger candidates stand in his place, adding that it would be good to have good representation across all age groups.

McLaughlin urged others to stand. He said being a member could be rewarding over the long term, as the board achieved quite a lot in the town.

Organisers of Ashburton’s annual Daffodil Day quiz say there will be several professional rivalries in play on the night.

The quiz, on August 29, is being organised by local ANZ bank staff, who aim to match the $18,000 raised by the event last year for the Cancer Society in Mid Canterbury.

Organiser and new commercial manager Hamish Catherwood said entries so far indicated some good battles were lined up.

“We have three or four accounting firms up against each other and irrigation companies going head-to-head. The battle of the real estate businesses will also be a good watch.”

Ashburton Online, previous winners many times over the years, is expected to be one of the teams to beat, along with past winners White Fox and Jones.

“There are bragging rights up for grabs across the board though,” Catherwood said.

ANZ has sponsored the New Zealand Cancer Society’s main fundraising day nationally for 29 years and raised $20 million in that time.

The Ashburton branch has been running an annual quiz for the past 15 years.

The quiz includes eight rounds of questions, along with auctions and raffles. “It’s always a fun night and all the money raised goes to support the Cancer Society in Mid Canterbury.”

Catherwood said there would be some outstanding items up for grabs and teams should register now, to avoid missing out. Teams can have up to five players and entry fee is $60.

Dead puppies still a mystery

No information has been put forward to the SPCA following the dumping of eight puppies in a park rubbish in Ashburton early last month.

The bodies of eight bull mastiff cross puppies were found dumped in a rubbish bin next to a playground on Mona Square on July 9.

“Sadly no information about the puppies or their mother has come forward from the community,” and SPCA spokesperson said.

“We would certainly appreciate any details the public may have, it is never too late to make a confidential report.”

The puppies were thought to be only days old and weighed between 600g and 1.2kg.

At the time, Ashburton SPCA Centre manager Rebecca Dobson said there was concern for the mother dog, who would be pining for her puppies and could develop a serious mastitis infection if unable to feed them.

Dobson said the key message the SPCA wanted to spread was that there were options for animal owners who found them-

selves in similar situations.

“We can help with food and look after animals, even temporarily, and we can find homes for animals like this,” she said.

“Sometimes people can feel overwhelmed and don’t know what to do.

“If you are in that situation, just call us. We will keep it confidential and help. There are options.”

Embroiderers show off their talents, creations The exquisite work of members of the Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild will be on show at the Ashburton Art Gallery later this month for the guild’s biennial exhibition.

The group’s Gathering of Threads exhibition will run from August 24 until September 22.

Guild member Jo Matthews said the group had 30 members, though not all were active.

The exhibition represented their best work over the past two years.

Matthews will have six pieces on show, including a tote bag with embroidered pockets.

She described her style as traditional and said she was taught to embroider at the age of seven by her mother.

A 17-year-old has pleaded guilty to possessing the video of the Christchurch mosque mass shootings, which saw 51 people shot dead. The teenager, who has name suppression, appeared in the Thames District Court yesterday, admitted one charge of possessing objectionable material, a video of the mosque shootings. He was remanded on bail to reappear for sentencing on September 20.

High-tech air ambulances

Two new air ambulance helicopters were launched in the South Island yesterday.

It’s the first time the state-ofthe-art aircraft have been used in New Zealand for emergency medicine purposes.

New Zealand’s Health Minister Hon Dr David Clark unveiled the new Airbus H145 twin-engine helicopters in Christchurch yesterday afternoon.

The choppers, worth $15 million each, were delivered from Airbus in Germany and will start service today, with one based in Christchurch and the other in Dunedin.

The new South Island air ambulance services come after Clark last year announced an agreement with Helicopter Emergency Medical Services New Zealand Limited (HEMS) to provide air ambulance services across the whole of the South Island.

HEMS is a joint venture between two well-established existing providers, GCH Aviation with a new facility at Christchurch Airport, and Helicopters Otago based in Dunedin.

It is supported by existing charitable trusts and funds

The new twin-engine helicopters start operating today from Christchurch and Dunedin, with exclusive-use air routes enabling missions to be flown safely in conditions that previously restricted the use of helicopters.

HEMS chief executive Ken Franklin says the helicopters set a new benchmark for New Zealand’s air ambulance services.

“These specially equipped aircraft will give clinical staff more room to provide vital patient care with the latest life-saving equipment,” he said.

“New technology on these aircraft combined with exclusive-use air routes will also en-

able missions to be flown safely in conditions that previously restricted the use of helicopters.”

While the helicopters will operate from Christchurch and Dunedin, the service will be supported with BK 117 aircraft and dedicated crew in bases at Nelson, Greymouth and Queenstown, with an at-call service available from Te Anau.

Five people have been hit by an avalanche at Aoraki Mt Cook.

The five climbers were caught in an avalanche on Gammack range, east of Aoraki Mt Cook.

One person sustained injuries and will be airlifted out.

The status of the other four people has not been specified.

A mountain rescue co-ordinator spokeswoman said they got a beacon alert just after 3.15pm.

She said everyone is fine, other than the injured person who’s being flown to hospital.

The spokeswoman said the climbers had two forms of communication, including being in radio contact.

A police spokesperson said they were notified by St John at 4.20 yesterday afternoon.

Breaking down mental health barriers I

t’s nice to see people who are willing to step outside of the safe circle, to talk and promote awareness about one of the most taboo subjects in New Zealand society.

Today’s story about the Let’s Chalk About It movement coming to Ashburton later this month is a real positive step in breaking some of the barriers down that currently surround the topic of mental health and, in particular, suicide.

Some organisations would probably prefer that such issues were kept under wraps and not talked about in a public space, let alone in the media, but there is no hiding from the fact anymore that Mid Canterbury has a very high suicide rate – reflective

of a nationwide problem which doesn’t seem to be getting any better.

So, the prospect of opening up the lines of communication and engaging people to talk about such a subject is a really strong way to start the conversation.

As Ngawaiata Williams and Bec Sandys have said, sweeping the issue under the carpet wasn’t working and, if anything, perhaps it would appear to be making

things even worse, so it’s time for a change.

Next month is Suicide Awareness Month and it would be really powerful to see as many Mid Cantabrians getting in behind the cause and promoting all that is available for people who might be, or who are, suffering from mental health issues.

There’s no possibility in one month, or in one event, of completely solving this issue that society currently faces, but by taking a small step forward and engaging in more conversation and making more members of the community aware of the problems that are being faced, it’s progress.

And progress is what we need.

The prospect that just one

small event might play a part in ultimately saving someone’s life is a promising start and one which we need to continue to build on.

In recent years the rate of mental health has grown exponentially.

With the introduction to everyday life of stressors like cyber-bullying and an increase in the overall awareness of mental health, the situation is growing at a rapid rate, notwithstanding the usual triggers such as bullying, cyberspace attacks, home life, work life and personal issues.

In a perfect world, everyone would be happy and no one would suffer from issues such as mental health and with the way that the subject has been treated

over time, you could easily be led to believe that it doesn’t exist.

But that belief is now null and void.

The right way forward is more discussion, more learning and education and more avenues being available for anyone who might be suffering, than there has ever been before.

Let’s Chalk About It will really only scratch the surface, but it’s a good, positive start and hopefully, with the support of those within our community, it can become the perfect launching pad for a shift in mindset about one of the most secret issues in society.

It’s well overdue, and about time we started looking at it a little more closely than we have before.

The man of the moment – Simon Bridges

S

imon Bridges continues his slow but steady rehabilitation into what you might loosely call a pretty decent opposition leader.

The National Party conference might well turn out to be the turning point.

A couple of weekends back his cancer announcement shamed the Government into a shambolic and patched together mini-announcement on getting some machinery to treat cancer into the regions.

The fact Bridges could make such a grandiose promise – when the Government having promised pretty much the same thing, but had done nothing two years into office – was a gift from the political heavens.

Then came a poll, with National at 45 per cent.

The lead party and the chance to one, prove they’re still very viable, and two, shut the leader-

ship critics down.

And now he’s on the front foot over Ihumatao.

And it comes as all the lefties, angsties, and virtue signallers have traipsed and trampled their way to South Auckland, as the media have fallen over themselves to give maximum coverage to a group of the rent-acrowd, as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has decided all building stops until she’s resolved it, and upon announcing that, she ran for Tokelau and left a couple of ministers to basically do nothing but more yak.

Only to return to the country last week, see that nothing had happened and then announce it was the Government’s role to facilitate.

Facilitate what? More yak?

Meantime come on in Simon, who dare I suggest has articulated what most of us have been thinking. Tell them to go home, get the police involved, and as Prime Minister, not touch the thing with a barge pole. Bridges,

more than Ardern, given he has legal training and she does not, would understand the dangers of doing what the Government is doing.

By indulging the protest, you raise hopes, in raising hopes you raise the possibility of a resolution, in raising that possibility you are potentially endangering the entire Treaty process. The message, if a cheque is written, is all deals are off.

Go find a bit of land you think you have a connection to, park yourself and wait for the ministerial limousine with the bootload of cash.

Meanwhile Bridges saying what he has sounds sensible, rational, logical and – dare I suggest – just a bit adult.

The Government, mainly Labour and the Greens, look out of their depth, panicked, reactionary. Their go-to positron is talk, let’s talk, and talk, and talk some more.

They have no ideas, no plan, no decisions, no action –just lots

and lots of talk.

This isn’t actually an issue, it’s a group of people with a grievance, that’s not new. It’s only got life because short of a clear idea, the Government freaked out and dipped their toe in, and it’s been downhill from there.

Are we really any further along than we were weeks ago? No. Why? Because talk isn’t a plan.

That’s why Bridges – increasingly with well-judged, nicely timed interventions into the issues of the day – looks like a well-reasoned, steady pair of hands.

Knife terror in Sydney CBD NZME A man holding a large knife terrorised Sydney CBD yesterday and stabbed a woman before members of the public restrained him on the ground with chairs and a milk crate.

NSW Police confirmed one victim, a young woman, was stabbed in a hotel near Clarence and King streets in the central city. She has been taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Video of the incident showed members of the public and a firefighter restraining the man on the ground with cafe chairs and a milk crate.

The man had blood on his hands and shirt. He had earlier been yelling “Shoot me, I want to die.”

NSW police superintendent Gavin Wood said the alleged offender had tried to stab multiple other people.

“Those attempts thankfully were unsuccessful,” Wood said.

Wood praised the bravery of bystanders who helped apprehend the man.

“They were significantly brave people.

To approach a person with a mindset of obviously what this person [had], with clear evidence of a stabbing previously, these people are heroes.”

There was a heavy police presence on King and Clarence streets.

“There were a stack of people running down Barrack Place saying that there was a guy with a knife,” Papaianni told media.

“Police started arriving about a minute later and started to chase him.”

An Uber driver who was on King Street

near the Grace Hotel told radio that he saw the terrifying incident unfold.

“Next thing I see this guy jumping over the car, over the bonnet … he had a knife in his hand,” the man said.

“He had a bit of blood on his shirt.

“There were police, people with their phone out, there were firies trying to contain him.”

Teen fugitives took their own lives AP

Canadian police said they believe two teenage fugitives suspected of killing a North Carolina woman, her Australian boyfriend and another man took their own lives amid a nationwide manhunt.

The Manitoba Medical Examiner completed the autopsies and confirmed that two bodies found last week in dense bush in northern Manitoba province were indeed 19-year-old Kam McLeod and 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky.

A police statement said they appeared to die by suicide.

McLeod and Schmegelsky were charged with second-degree murder in the death of Leonard Dyck, a University of British Columbia lecturer whose body was found July 19 along a highway in British Columbia.

They were also suspects in the fatal shootings of Australian Lucas Fowler and Chynna Deese of Charlotte, North Carolina, whose bodies were found July 15 along the Alaska Highway about 500 kilometres from where Dyck was killed. The couple had met at a hostel in Croatia and their

romance blossomed as they adventured across the US, Mexico, Peru and elsewhere, the woman’s older brother said.

A manhunt for the teenage suspects had spread across three provinces and involved the Canadian military. The suspects had not been seen since July 22, and their bodies were found near Gillam, Manitoba – more than 3200 kilometres from northern British Columbia.

Police said in a statement McLeod and Schmegelsky were dead for a number of days before they were found, but said there were strong indications they had been alive for a few days after they were last seen. Two guns were located, and authorities are working to definitively confirm that the firearms are connected to the murders in British Columbia.

The British Columbia Prosecution Service said criminal charges don’t move forward if the person who has been accused is proven dead.

Police said items that were found on the shoreline of the Nelson River proved key in helping locate the suspects. Specialised teams began searching high-probability areas nearby, and on Wednesday morn-

ing, the two bodies were found within 1 kilometre of the objects.

The deaths of the three victims had shaken rural northern British Columbia and Manitoba.

Schmegelsky’s father, Alan Schmegelsky, said last month that he expected the nationwide manhunt to end in the death of his son, who he said was on “a suicide mission”.

McLeod and Schmegelsky grew up on Vancouver Island and worked together at a local Walmart before they set off on what their parents thought was a trip to Yukon for work.

They were originally considered missing persons and only became suspects later.

Police were investigating photographs of a swastika armband and a Hitler Youth knife that Schmegelsky allegedly sent online to a friend on the video-game network Steam.

Alan Schmegelsky said his son took him to an army surplus store about eight months ago in his small Vancouver Island hometown of Port Alberni, where his son was excited about the Nazi artifacts.

A person familiar with operations at the federal jail where Jeffrey Epstein killed himself says one of the two people guarding him the night he died wasn’t a correctional officer.

The person wasn’t authorised to disclose information about the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The person detailed how Epstein took his life, days after being taken off a suicide watch.

Earnings decline blamed on M. bovis

Government statistician Liz MacPherson has resigned after the release of an independent review of New Zealand’s 2018 census.

“As leader of this organisation, I take full responsibility for the shortfalls identified in the report,” MacPherson said in a statement. She will remain in the role until the end of the year.

Low participation rates last year have delayed the results from census, and forced the agency to plug gaps in the data using administrative information from other arms of government. In April, the government pledged an extra $10.4 million to assist preparations for the 2023 census.

The independent reviewers were asked to consider the design, implementation, and operation of last year’s survey, with a focus on partic-

ipation in, and the coverage of, the census.

Stats NZ embarked on a “significant change journey” with the 2018 census, according to the review. It noted the changes in approach were necessary to combat the increased costs of conducting a traditional census, and in response to pressure to remain relevant as well as improve the quality and timeliness of census outputs.

The review found leadership at a programme level lacked strategic direction and effective programme management.

According to McPherson, Stats NZ was “too optimistic, placed too much emphasis on the online census, and did not have robust contingency plans in place for when things started to go wrong”.

Rising chicken, lamb and beef prices helped push New Zealand’s food prices higher in July.

Food prices rose 1.1 per cent from June and were 0.9 per cent higher than in July last year, Stats NZ said.

Meat and poultry prices lifted 2.8 per cent on the month after lifting 0.2 per cent in June.

Mutton, lamb and hogget prices jumped 7.6 per cent while poultry prices were up 4.5 per cent.

Meat and poultry prices were up 5.8 per cent from a year ago.

Lamb chop prices reached an all-time high in July, up 1.7

per cent on the month, Stats NZ said.

Vegetable prices rose 3.7 per cent on the month but were down 17 per cent from a year ago.

The food price index accounts for about a fifth of the consumers price index, which is one measure the Reserve Bank uses to pursue its inflation target when setting interest rates.

The central bank last week surprised markets when it cut rates by 50 basis points to a record low 1.0 per cent.

Inflation is currently 1.5 per cent and the central bank’s target is 1-3 per cent with a focus on the midpoint.

She has stood up and been accountable in owning the report’s findings, he said.

He has asked her to stay on as government statistician until Christmas.

“I want her to stay on because she is the best person to finish the remediation work,” said Hughes.

The State Services Commission will start the recruitment process for a new government statistician in the coming weeks.

Stats NZ will be releasing the first official 2018 Census results on September 23, 11 months later than planned.

A skinnier PGG Wrightson reported a 29 per cent slide in annual earnings from its remaining businesses as the Mycoplasma bovis outbreak curbed spending by farmers.

Operating earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation were $24.4 million in the 12 months ended June 30, down from $34.5 million a year earlier and short of the $25-30 million guidance range provided in May. Revenue from Wrightson’s continuing operations edged up 0.1 per cent to $809.3 million.

“Farmer confidence in parts of the agriculture sector remains subdued, constraining farm spending and therefore our revenue growth over the year. This has also been evident in recent months with a discernible tightening in the credit environment,” chairman Rodger Finlay said.

Simply cooking with chicken Chicken is now one of the more affordable proteins for a meat eating family and that’s great because it’s also one of the most versatile.

While it takes a lot to beat a traditional roast chicken, supermarkets now sell chicken in a variety of cuts that make it easy to ring the changes. Thighs, breast, pieces, drums, mince or the whole bird, the choice is yours.

Spinach and chicken pie 2T olive oil 1 onion, chopped 4 chicken breasts, cut into 1.5cm cubes 1/4 C flour 1 C milk 1 C chicken stock 150g spinach, chopped with stalks removed 1 lemon To taste – salt and freshly ground pepper.

800g agria potatoes, cooked and mashed 100g feta, crumbled 2T chopped parsley

Lemon chicken Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon 6 chicken breasts, skinned and boned 1/2 C flour 1/2 t salt 1/2 t paprika 2T oil 2T Chelsea soft brown sugar 1 lemon, thinly sliced 1 C chicken stock ■■ Preheat oven to 190°C. ■■ Sprinkle the lemon juice over the chicken breasts.

■■ Mix the flour, salt and paprika in large plastic bag.

■■ Shake the chicken in the flour mixture.

■■ Heat the oil in a frypan over high heat and fry the chicken to brown.

■■ Transfer to a baking dish.

■■ Sprinkle with the grated lemon rind and Chelsea soft brown sugar.

■■ Cover with slices of lemon and pour in the chicken stock.

■■ Cover with tinfoil and bake for 25–30 minutes.

■■ Serve with salad and rice.

Chicken and white bean stew 2T sunflower oil 400g boneless, skinless chicken thigh, trimmed, cut into chunks 1 onion, finely chopped 3 carrots, finely chopped 3 celery sticks, finely chopped 2 thyme sprigs or 1/2 t dried 1 bay leaf, fresh or dried 600ml vegetable or chicken stock 2 x 400g/14oz cans haricot beans, drained Chopped parsley, to serve ■■ Heat the oil in a large pan, add the chicken, then fry until lightly browned.

■■ Add the veg, then fry for a few minutes more.

■■ Stir in the herbs and stock.

■■ Bring to the boil.

■■ Stir well, reduce the heat, then cover and cook for 40 minutes, until the chicken is tender.

■■ Stir the beans into the pan, then simmer for 5 minutes.

■■ Stir in the parsley and serve with mashed potato

Red chicken curry 2T red curry paste 2 shallots 1T vegetable oil 1T brown sugar 1t lemongrass, finely chopped 400ml coconut cream 1C chicken stock 4 chicken breasts, skinned 150g green beans, trimmed 1/4 C fresh coriander ■■ Place red curry paste, shallots, and vegetable oil in a saucepan and saute gently for 3-5 minutes, stirring to prevent the paste from sticking.

■■ Add brown sugar, finely chopped lemongrass, coconut cream and stock to the pan and bring almost to the boil, reduce to a simmer.

■■ Slice each chicken breast fillet into four strips and add to coconut curry along with the beans.

■■ Simmer gently until chicken is cooked through.

■■ Serve curry with cooked rice and beans, top with coriander leaves.

■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■■ Heat oil in a saucepan and gently cook chopped onion for 5 minutes. Set aside.

■■ Brown chicken (cut in 1.5cm cubes) in the same pan in batches and set aside.

■■ Stir flour into the oil remaining in the pan to form a smooth paste. Add a little more oil if needed.

■■ Add milk, stirring to form a smooth sauce, then add stock and simmer for 5 minutes.

■■ Return chicken and onion to the pan and stir in chopped spinach and rind from one lemon.

■■ Season with salt and pepper to taste.

■■ Cool, then spoon into a 2-litre pie dish and top with mashed potato.

■■ Sprinkle with feta.

■■ Bake pie for 40 minutes until the topping is golden brown.

■■ Sprinkle with parsley and serve.

Creamy baked chicken 1T olive oil 600g chicken thighs, skinless, boneless, cut in large chunks 2 leeks, large, sliced 250g button mushrooms, halved 250g ham, thick-cut, roughly chopped 50g butter 2T flour 3/4 C white wine, dry 3/4 C chicken stock 1/2 C cream 1/4 C Tarragon, chopped 2t dijon mustard To taste – salt and freshly ground pepper 1/2 C breadcrumbs, white 1T parsley, finely chopped ■■ Heat oven to 190°C. ■■ Heat oil in a frypan and fry chicken for 10 minutes until golden.

■■ Transfer to ovenproof dish.

■■ Add the ham, leeks and mushrooms to pan. Sauté, then add to dish.

■■ Melt butter in a pan, add flour and stir for 1 minute over medium heat. Pour in wine and cook, stirring until thick, then gradually add stock, stirring until smooth.

■■ Cook for 1 minute then stir in cream, tarragon and mustard.

■■ Season to taste, then pour over the chicken.

■■ Mix breadcrumbs, parsley and oil, and scatter on top of chicken mixture.

■■ Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until bubbling and golden.

Gooey chocolate torte 250g mixed biscuits – gingernuts, sponge fingers, wine biscuits 100g unsalted butter, plus some for greasing 550g softened mascarpone cheese 115g caster sugar 1 1/2 T plain flour 2 eggs, separated 2-3 drops vanilla essence 150g plain dark chocolate (70 per cent cocoa solids) 2T rum, or your favourite coffee liqueur (optional) Sifted cocoa powder, to decorate

■■ Break the chocolate into small pieces and place in a heat-proof dish. Melt the chocolate over a pan of simmering water. Cool slightly.

■■ Fold the chocolate into the creamed cheese mixture using a large spoon.

■■ Stir in the liqueur if using.

■■ Preheat the oven to 190°C. ■■ Use an electric mixer to whisk the egg whites until they form soft peaks. Carefully fold into the torte mixture with a large spoon.

It is important not to over mix as you want the whites to lighten the mixture.

■■ Spoon the mixture onto the biscuit base and level the surface with a knife or spatula.

■■ Bake for 35-40 minutes – the torte will still be soft in the centre at this stage but quite firm at the edges.

■■ Turn off the oven and leave with the door slightly ajar, to cool completely. The filling will continue to firm up during this time.

■■ Chill for at least 2 hours before serving. Serve sprinkled with cocoa powder, and a spoonful of crème fraiche.

All Blacks on the decline

Barrett gets three weeks

he second Bledisloe test should provide a definitive answer as to whether this All Blacks side has what it takes to win the World Cup. The essence of a World Cup campaign is the ability to respond to pressure and the All Blacks are quite clearly under considerable pressure this week.

It’s not just that the Bledisloe Cup is under threat following the Wallabies record win.

That’s at the heart of it obviously, but the plot is much thicker than that.

The last 10 months have been the most difficult and least convincing of the last decade.

There has been a tangible decline in standards – the All Blacks have won seven, lost three and drawn one of their last 11 tests, but take out the Sunday picnic fixtures against Japan and Italy and their win ratio is barely above 50 per cent since September 2018.

But there has also been an intangible decline, an ever-increasing sense of this team having lost its way in some difficult to detect manner.

It has been an age since they cranked the handle and decimated an old foe.

It feels like Beauden Barrett’s four-try heroics in the second Bledisloe Cup test happened in a different lifetime rather than August last year and one more lacklustre performance, or another defeat, will tip the balance from the All Blacks being a team rebuilding their attack to the All Blacks being a team with a broken attack.

The onus to fix things sits with everyone involved, but it starts with the forwards, who looking back through the last 10 tests, won’t find much to satisfy themselves they produced what they intended.

The All Blacks pack was simply beaten up in Perth, just as it was

Sam Cane in deep thought as he watches the Wallabies run riot over the All Blacks. the week before, for most of the game at least, by the Springboks, and it has become such a recurring theme in recent tests that it is difficult to simply assume that standards will lift at Eden Park as they so often do.

In November last year the pack struggled against Ireland and while the All Blacks beat England in London, the victory didn’t come on the back of a dominant performance from the forwards.

And nor was there any sense of rage and control about the forwards in the back half of the Rugby Championship last year and the pack has delivered just the one commanding performance in their last eight tests, which was in Yokohama against the Wallabies.

The debate that has been flowing in recent weeks about the value of having Richie Mo’unga at first-five and Beauden Barrett at fullback has been utterly pointless for the simple reason that the All Blacks have failed to build any founda-

tion on which this partnership could flourish.

Rugby is an evolving sport, but it’s still true that the team which dominates the collisions and looks after the ball, has the better chance of winning.

Sam Cane and Dane Coles revealed on Monday that a lack of desire was the problem in Perth, that collectively the team, and presumably more specifically the forwards, weren’t in the right mind-set.

To turn up once to a Bledisloe Cup test with the wrong attitude is unfortunate, but do it twice would be straight-out unforgivable and if the All Blacks can’t find the urgency and intensity at Eden Park, then you would have to worry about their ability to find it at the World Cup. The same would apply to the individuals who are now under specific scrutiny this weekend.

Joe Moody and Owen Franks haven’t done enough either at the set-piece or away from it and have looked like a couple of

honest plodders in comparison with their Australian, South Africa, English and Irish front-row peers.

Both of the All Blacks’ starting props can play with the ball and get around the field and the fact they haven’t done that in recent weeks is illustrative of the bigger issue at play here, which is that too many individuals have been getting by in recent tests rather than driving their performance to new levels.

That would be the case with Ben Smith, who may still be struggling for sharpness after damaging his hamstring in Super Rugby and Rieko Ioane, who was better in Perth than he was in Wellington, but still not the dynamic, explosive force he was in 2017.

Rarely in the last few years has there been this much pressure on the All Blacks to impose themselves and adjust their trajectory to provide a basis in fact rather than faith that they remain a genuine World Cup contender.

Henry’s simple plan to smash the Wallabies NZME Get hold of the ball and we’ll “kill them”.

That’s the simple formula from World Cup winning coach Sir Graham Henry, who says equal possession will produce a Bledisloe Cup victory for the All Blacks on Saturday night.

Henry told Radio Sport All Black fans should be concerned after the walloping Australia dished out in Perth.

“Of course we should be worried … the All Blacks will be worried and so they should be,” he said.

“They were soundly beaten by a very good Wallabies side.

“I think the All Blacks gave away eight penalties on the weekend which is not a lot in the normal game but Australia only gave away four … which has a pretty big effect on the result I reckon.

“They had 11 lineouts, we had four – they had 11 starts in lineouts.

“So we lacked ball. We only had 30 per cent I think but with that we scored four tries which was a good result really.

“So we just need more ball. If we can get 50 per cent plus we are going to win the game, because we’ve got the players to use that ball effectively.

“And our defence believe it or not was better than the Australi-

ans – they had 70 per cent of the ball and scored six tries.

“We need to play the game correctly so we get more than our share – if we get 60 per cent we’re going to kill them.”

Henry hopes coach Steve Hansen, his old deputy, sticks with Richie Mo’unga at first fiveeighths, leaving Beauden Barrett at fullback.

“Beaudie is a fantastic player whether he plays 10 or 15, and Richie Mo’unga has been the form five-eighth for a couple of years,” said Henry.

“His (Mo’unga’s) composure under pressure is hugely impressive.

“He’s also a bit of a game break-

er because he can take on the line, he’s a good goal kicker, and he just needs time in the saddle I think.

“He’s a young player internationally … I’ve got no problem with the strategy, it just needs time. Yeah, I think there’s time.”

Henry said the All Blacks needed to get “in the zone” and suggested avoiding social media in a massive week like this would help to eliminate distractions.

Whether the All Blacks shut themselves off or not, they understood the pressure on them.

“There’s no hiding from the (country’s) expectation and I think that’s what brings out the best in the All Blacks,” he said.

All Blacks lock Scott Barrett has been hit with a three-week ban following his red card against the Wallabies on Saturday.

Barrett, who pleaded guilty, trained with the squad yesterday morning, with no additional locking cover brought into the All Blacks squad.

The 25-year-old will miss this weekend’s test against Australia with the ban lasting until Sunday September 1.

He will be free to play in the All Blacks’ final warm-up test against Tonga on September 7 and for the start of the Rugby World Cup. French referee Jerome Garces, who also sent off Sonny Bill Williams in 2017, gave Barrett a red card after a no arm tackle on Wallabies skipper Michael Hooper in final minute of the first half in Perth.

Cyril Brownlie, Colin Meads and Williams are the only previous All Blacks to be sent off in a test.

Williams was slapped with a four-week ban for his no arm tackle on Anthony Watson of the Lions in 2017.

“For me I have a clear picture on the field,” Garces told the television match official following the Barrett incident on Hooper.

“He never uses his arm. He just puts his shoulder and elbow on the neck and head so it’s clearly dangerous.

“It’s direct with force so I have no option but to be a red card against four,” he added.

The SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee of Adam Casselden SC (Chairman), Stefan Terblanche and Eroni Clarke assessed the case on Sunday night.

In his finding, Foul Play Review Committee Chairman Adam Casselden SC ruled the following: “Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles and additional evidence, including submissions from his legal representative, Stephen Cottrell, the Foul Play Review Committee upheld the Red Card under Law 9.16.”

“With respect to sanction the Foul Play Review Committee deemed the act of foul play merited a mid-range entry point of 6 weeks due to World Rugby instructions that dictate any incident of foul play which results in contact with the head and/or neck must start at a mid-range level. However, taking into account mitigating factors including the Player’s exemplary judicial record, his expressed remorse and the fact the Player has pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity, the Foul Play Review Committee reduced the suspension to 3 weeks.”

“The Foul Play Review Committee adjourned the hearing to seek more evidence regarding the Player’s proposed schedule of matches.

Upon reconvening the Foul Play Review Committee was presented with extensive evidence demonstrating the Player’s intended playing schedule.”

“The player is therefore suspended for 3 weeks, up to and including Sunday 1 September 2019.”

Home sides take out exchange

Winning all bar one of the battles on court set Ashburton College up for a narrow win in an annual sporting exchange with Lincoln High School on Monday.

Ashburton College took the victory 7-6 after dominating when it came to the sports that played out indoors, while Lincoln had the edge outside under

the surprisingly blue skies.

A bad forecast meant that when the youngsters left school for the weekend on Friday, there was a good chance of weather stopping the exchange from going ahead, but after a cold and wet weekend Monday’s skies dawned clear.

And the visitors made the most of the fine conditions, with Lincoln winning both of the day’s football encounters with relative

ease. The Lincoln boys won 5-1 at the Ashburton Domain while the Lincoln girls beat their Ashburton College counterparts 11-0.

It was a similar story on the hockey turf, with the Lincoln hockey girls keeping the home side scoreless and winning 8-0, while the Lincoln boys won 4-1.

Lincoln did suffer one loss outside, though, with the under-15 rugby battle at Celtic going the

way of Ashburton College 36-14.

The Lincoln side did pick up a couple of wins indoors, too, taking out the table tennis 5-1 and the senior girls’ basketball 47-41.

But that basketball win was the only one Lincoln picked up of the seven games that played out at the EA Networks Centre.

There were four basketball games played all-up, with Ashburton College taking out the

senior boys’ game 66-47 and the junior girls’ game 45-32, before the junior boys picked up the biggest win of the day, 95-33.

Three netball games were also contested and all three went the way of the Ashburton College sides, although they were close.

The College B girls won 25-21, while the year 10A girls won 2421 and the year 9A girls just managed to sneak the win 31-30.

Andreescu hailed for play, poise heading into US Open AP Current and former players are praising teenager Bianca Andreescu of Canada – not only for winning her third title of the year and first on home soil, but for the gracious way she handled a surprise retirement by Serena Williams.

Andreescu won the Rogers Cup in Toronto after an emotional Williams said she could not continue in the final because of back spasms.

Williams’ decision initially caught Andreescu off guard, but the younger player quickly went over to console the 37-year-old American star.

“I’m a pretty outgoing person and I felt like I knew what to say at that moment because I knew exactly how she felt because of what I’ve been through the last couple of months with my shoulder and even last year with my back,” the 19-year-old Andreescu said.

Williams called Andreescu an “old soul” and a “great sportswoman”.

Those words meant a lot to Andreescu, who grew up idolising the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

“I’ve watched (Williams) play my whole life,” she said.

“She’s a champion and she’s an inspiration on and off the court.

“So having those words come

out of her mouth about me is pretty damn awesome.”

Many others were quick to offer words of approval, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who called Andreescu “an inspiration to players across Canada” in a tweet.

“Today you showed tennis fans what sportsmanship is all about.”

Tennis icon Billie Jean King, famous for pushing for women’s equality in the sport, also joined the cheers on social media, saying Andreescu showed “a level of maturity well beyond her years”.

“This is how women should treat each other. Her empathy and support for Serena were admira-

ble. Competitors and women supporting women!” King tweeted.

The win moved Andreescu to 14th in the rankings.

She has a 38-5 record this season, including titles at Newport Beach and Indian Wells. She has withdrawn or retired twice during that span because of injury. She’ll take that hot streak into the US Open, which starts August 26.

She withdrew from this week’s Western & Southern Open at Cincinnati to give herself time to recover after dealing with shoulder and groin injuries this year.

“My body told me to just take it easy right now and get ready for the US Open.”

Take two proves a winner

NRL defends Blair sin-bin

ust in case you didn’t hear, the Warriors had a pretty good win on Friday night.

And you may not have heard all that much about it, because so often it’s the losses that get more publicity than the wins.

But, this win deserves to be talked about because it was pretty impressive, and I’m going to talk about it because I was there to see it.

And it was great.

For the past three years now, for my birthday, my husband and I have treated ourselves to a child-free weekend away in Auckland to watch a Warriors game – clearly my choice, not his – and win or lose it’s always an experience.

Mt Smart Stadium when the Warriors are playing is an awesome place to be, whether you’re there to watch every moment that plays out on the paddock, or if you’re just there to people-watch.

That can be just as entertain-

ing, like the guy we watched put his hoodie on backwards on Friday night and then proceeded to act as though he’d done it on purpose and leaving it like that for the rest of the game.

This was actually our second attempt at getting away this year.

Attempt one was back in May and fog meant we didn’t get any further than Christchurch Airport, so instead we watched the Broncos come out on top 8-2 from home.

It was a loss, it wasn’t a great performance, and to be honest I struggled to get into it because I knew that somewhere in the stands were two empty seats

which we should’ve been sitting on.

I was a bit grumpy.

We decided to give it another go – this time to coincide with the husband’s birthday – and we were tossing up between Friday night’s Manly game, or the week before’s against the Raiders.

Thank goodness we went the way we did, because that Raiders game was atrocious, whereas the Manly game was absolutely awesome.

Even the rain that fell for a fair chunk of the game couldn’t put a dampener on things.

All it really meant was that I ended up adding to my collection of Warriors goodies with a new umbrella.

It wasn’t a polished performance and yes, I’m well aware that we came very close to a last-minute loss after leading 18-0, but it was a performance that ensured that we were still in with a sniff of a top eight finish.

With four games to go, we’re 11th, but we’re only two points

outside that top eight.

It’s a similar position to the one we found ourselves in last season, where we finished strong and made that top eight.

This season we finish with four teams that are ahead of us.

The Roosters are currently second, the Raiders are third, the Rabbitohs are fourth and Shaun Johnson and the Sharks are ninth.

And only one of those games is at home.

So if we’re going to do it, we’re going to have to do it the hard way.

But you know the Warriors, we have a tendency beat the top teams and lose to the wooden spooners.

And Friday night showed that the Warriors are a more-than-capable team.

They’ve been capable of doing good all season, at times they’ve just left their brains on the team bus, and the question is now whether they’ve left their run to the finals too late.

NZME Two legendary Kiwis will receive one of league’s highest accolades tonight with their induction into the NRL Hall of Fame.

The governing body announced this week that Warriors great Stacey Jones and long-time Kiwis captain Ruben Wiki are part of the induction for 2019.

It’s a prestigious honour and rare for New Zealanders.

Mark Graham, who served the North Sydney Bears with distinction throughout the 1980s, as well as being one of the best to wear the black and white V in his 29 tests, was the first New Zealander honoured, with his induction last year.

Spanning 110 years of league history, across the professional competitions in England and Australia, there are 106 players in the NRL Hall of Fame.

Jones and Wiki were chosen from a shortlist of 25 nominees for 2019 which included such names as Steve Renouf, Greg Alexander, Paul Sironen, Paul Vautin, Michael O’Connor, Kevin Walters, Garry Jack and Gary Belcher.

Kangaroos and Dragons prop Craig Young and former New South Wales State of Origin captain Danny Buderus are the other two players to be honoured in 2019.

After settling on the shortlist, a voting college representing a cross section of the game selected their top five nominees.

The four players were then selected through an independent audit of the votes.

Wiki was an NRL trailblazer for Kiwis in the early 1990s, making

Graham Annesley, the NRL head of football, has defended the controversial sin-binning of Adam Blair during the Warriors’ win over Manly, but does not believe Blake Green questioned the integrity of the match officials with his reaction to the decision.

On-field microphones picked up Green saying “just kick us out of the comp, man” towards referee Ben Cummins after the bunker ruled Blair had committed a professional foul with 13 minutes to go.

Green’s comments were the result of weeks of pent-up frustration.

While Annesley made it clear he did not condone the halfback’s comments, the former leading referee cleared him of abusing match officials.

An Otahuhu Leopards junior, Wiki was spotted by Raiders coach Tim Sheens and made his name in the twilight years of the famed Green Machine.

He was part of Canberra’s 1994 Premiership winning team and accumulated 225 games for the Raiders across 14 seasons.

One of the toughest men to play the game, Wiki’s time in Auckland is also fondly remembered, as he anchored the Warriors forward pack from 2005 to 2008, highlighted by finals campaigns in the latter two years.

Wiki was the first Kiwi to reach 300 NRL games, ending with 311.

Wiki, who transitioned from a hard running centre to a granite-like prop across his career, also captained the Kiwis in two World Cups (1995 and 2000) and was key to the famous 2005 Tri Nations triumph.

His 55 tests were a world record when he retired.

Jones is often mentioned, alongside Simon Mannering, as the greatest Warrior.

A product of the Pt Chevalier Pirates, Jones made his debut as a 17-year-old in 1995 and soon displaced Alexander at halfback, forcing the marquee Australian

signing to play fullback.

Nicknamed the Little General, Jones was a shining light through years of near misses and struggle at Mt Smart, before his talents got the appropriate vehicle with memorable playoff runs during 2001-03.

He was superb in the 2002 season as the Warriors claimed the minor premiership, and his individual try in that year’s grand final is regarded as one of the best scored on the NRL’s biggest day.

Like Wiki, Jones had a glittering international career, playing 46 tests, stretching from 1995 to 2006.

Agreement an historic accord, says Satterthwaite

Contact sport ‘gone in a generation’ NZME The doctor who discovered shocking brain injuries in American football stars has predicted that people will stop playing contact sports within “one generation”.

Doctor Bennet Omalu was the pioneering neuropathologist who first discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the brains of NFL stars.

In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Omalu, who was played by Will Smith in the Hollywood film Concussion, said: “In the next generation or two, mankind won’t be playing sports like rugby or football or ice hockey or mixed martial arts.

“It just doesn’t make sense to be damaging the brain of a human being.”

The Nigerian-born doctor also called for a ban on children playing contact sports: “It’s almost like child abuse, to intentionally expose a child to injury,” he told the SMH. Omalu first began developing his theories on CTE when he conducted an autopsy on former NFL player Mike Webster in 2002.

Webster had once won four Super Bowls but died penniless,

only able to sleep by tasering himself.

Omalu found large amounts of tau protein in Webster’s brain.

The protein affects the brain in a similar way to how beta-amyloid proteins contribute to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Omalu published his findings in 2005, calling for further study of the disease: “We herein report the first documented case of long-term neurodegenerative changes in a retired professional NFL player consistent with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

This case draws attention to a disease that remains inadequately studied in the cohort of professional football players, with unknown true prevalence rates.”

The NFL tried to play down the findings and hired their own specialists to discredit Omalu’s work.

He went on to study more NFL players and public awareness of his work increased, resulting in the NFL finally acknowledging a link between their sport and long-term neurological effects in 2009.

It took until 2016 for a senior NFL executive to testify before the US Congress that the organisation believed there was a link

Speaking to Herald journalist Dylan Cleaver, clinical neuropsychologist Dr John Glass said of the link between rugby and dementia: “There’s a pattern and it’s sad.”

A group of top US scientists told the Herald earlier this year that no child should be playing contact sport before the age of 12, saying that tackling might be

too much for the brain development of young children.

Dr Bob Cantu, the “Godfather of Concussion” said a key factor in developing CTE was not the severity of the trauma but “the total amount of hits you took and when you started taking them”.

Cantu said impacts received when young came at a greater price than those as an adult, regardless of force, and was adamant there should not be any tackle codes until high school.

“Your neck is weak and your brain isn’t myelinated, and it’s easier to disrupt brain fibres,” he said.

Earlier this year, New Zealand Rugby head of medical Ian Murphy said there was still much to learn about the risk-reward of contact youth sport and said his organisation would continue to offer tackle rugby to children, with a continuing onus on technique.

“You’re seeing an emerging discussion around non-contact forms of contact sports at younger ages.

“That’s emerging slowly. It’s arguably not a bad thing but I think there’ll always be a group that likes to play the contact form of games,” Murphy said.

White Ferns captain Amy Satterthwaite has hailed cricket’s new Women’s Master Agreement as a historic and progressive accord that provides another significant step forward for the game in New Zealand.

Satterthwaite said the agreement, reached in principle by New Zealand Cricket and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association, represented a major breakthrough for women’s cricket in New Zealand, particularly in terms of financial consideration for players below international level.

“I know people tend to focus on the White Ferns’ contracts but the investment in domestic and developing players is an important step forward for women’s cricket in New Zealand,” she said.

“This is an agreement that recognises the need to grow the game at grassroots and domestic level in order to produce White Ferns who excel on the world stage.”

Satterthwaite said the increase in remuneration for White Ferns players, more than doubling the total player payments under the previous agreement, was also a momentous advance for the women’s game.

“This means all White Ferns can now ply their trade as fulltime professional cricketers as well as having the flexibility to participate in overseas leagues – which is a huge leap forward for all involved.

“With the ICC Women’s World Cup 2021 on the horizon, this will mean a great deal in terms of upskilling and training, and providing the best possible environment for preparing ourselves and the team.”

Under the terms of the threeyear agreement, the number and value of White Ferns contracts has increased; a new tier of contracted Development Players has been introduced and, for the first time, domestic players will be paid by their Major Associations.

Features include: A total Player Payment Pool of $4.136m across the three-year term Domestic players included for the first time, increasing the total number of players on contract to 79 – up from 15 in the previous agreement 17 (up from 15) centrally contracted White Ferns earning a minimum remuneration of between $44,000 and $64,000 annually. This includes a retainer payment, a retirement fund contribution and a promotional payment In addition, White Ferns can each earn up to $16,000 in match fees per year 8 centrally contracted Development Players earning $7500 for participating in NZC high performance programmes and the two domestic competitions 54 domestic players on Domestic Competition Agreements worth $3250 – in consideration of their availability for the Super Smash and Hallyburton Johnstone games

Top trotter ‘can go a lot faster’

By Michael Guerin It took only three starts for Speeding Spur to justify one of the toughest decisions of Andrew Grierson’s life.

And his stunning track record win at Tioga Downs in the United States on Monday could well earn him an invite into one of the world’s richest trots.

The veteran Kiwi trotted a 1:52.8 mile to set a new track record for an aged trotter, with the stake for the $148,000 open trot meaning Speeding Spur’s US career is as good as paid for.

But for managing owner Grierson, the win meant so much more than that.

As well as being one of New Zealand’s best known equine veterinarians, Grierson is one of the principals of powerhouse harness breeding operation Woodlands Stud, and it is through that role, he came to be the man in charge of the career of Speeding Spur.

season for long-time trainers John and Josh Dickie but Grierson made the controversial decision to send him to the US to give him his chance against the world’s best and get a fast mile time to embellish his stallion career.

“I know I got some flak from some people at the time who thought he should have stayed here for the Inter Dominions but I thought he deserved his chance up there,” said Grierson.

“It wasn’t about the money, it was about him getting his chance and it is a hard business standing stallions and a good mile time and some big wins up there will help him get a real chance at stud down here.

“So this is the first step towards that.

“We had great trainers down here in John and Josh and he is getting wonderful care up there from Linda Toscano, so we are thrilled with how it has all panned out.

“Linda is adamant he can go a lot faster and maybe even sub-1:50 for the mile and that would really help his stud career.”

Speeding Spur’s win, admittedly against not the greatest open class field of the season as many of the glamour trotting mares were in a different race on the programme, opens plenty of doors.

He was already being suggested as the Down Under invite to the $1m Yonkers Invitational while several of the other major trots in North America are on his radar.

“We will let him tell us where the limit is for him and how competitive he can be at the highest level,” says Grierson.

“He was going to stay up there just for this season, but if he keeps improving, he could even spend next season up there.”

The win capped a great weekend for Kiwis in US harness racing as Dexter Dunn drove one of the richest winners of his career when Bettor’s Wish won the $400,000 Carl Milstean Memorial at Northfield Park.

It was Dunn’s first night driving at Northfield Park and continues his dream season in the US, with Bettor’s Wish trained by another Kiwi ex-pat, Chris Ryder.

Ready for spring assault NZME Dual Group One winner Danzdanzdance had her first hit-out of the season at the Avondale trials yesterday ahead of what could be a lucrative spring.

The Chris Gibbs and Michelle Bradley-trained mare finished third in her 1000m heat on the heavy11 surface and her connections were pleased with what they saw ahead of her raceday return later this month in the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings.

“She trialled really well,” Gibbs said.

“Obviously it was very heavy, but we were expecting that, so we just wanted to get her around safely and just have a nice quiet trial and a bit of a blow.”

Danzdanzdance was ridden by last season’s premiership winning jockey Lisa Allpress who has secured the Group One ride at Hastings next month.

“Lisa Allpress rode her for us,” Gibbs said.

“She hopped off and was happy about the whole trial, so we’ll just move on from here.”

Danzdanzdance had a standout season last term winning the Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) at Trentham and Gr.1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie and was Group One placed on three other occasions, including running third to Avilius in the Gr.1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill in March.

A return across the Tasman could be on the cards this spring for the mare, however, Gibbs said that trip depends on her performance in the first leg of the Hawke’s Bay triple crown.

“Lisa will ride her in New Zealand in that one run (Tarzino) and she (Danzdanzdance) will probably go to Australia, but she will have to run very well.

“There is nothing set in stone just yet.

“You have got to throw in early nominations for the Cox Plate (Gr.1, 20140m) and races like that, but we will just be guided by the weather.

“Getting a bit of moisture would be our best chance, that’s whether we go to Sydney or Melbourne.”

Danzdanzdance could be looking at a very lucrative spring for trainers Chris Gibbs and Michelle Bradley.

Big bucks going on the table in Christchurch NZME The top poker players in New Zealand will this weekend converge on Christchurch casino, hoping to take home a share of the likely $900,000 prize pool generated from one of the country’s biggest poker events.

The 2019 New Zealand Poker Champs start on Saturday with a $440 deepstack turbo tournament and culminates next weekend with a $1950 buy-in main event tournament, which is expected to produce a first prize of around $100,000.

In between there are 12 other events, which range in buy-in from $250 to $3125 and include No Limit Holdem, Pot Limit Omaha, Short Deck No Limit Hold’em, Short Deck Pot Limit Omaha a women’s event and a bounty event.

The New Zealand Poker Champs Main Event has produced eight Kiwi winners over the past seven years after Kuru

Whiston and Renae Baker split the purse last year taking home $70,000 each.

Ben Rendall won $75,000 in 2018, Jack Efariamo won $50,000 in 2017 and Jay Gilbert and Jason Brown split the purse in 2015, taking home $40,500 each.

Australian Shane Hicks won $45,500 in 2014, Kiwi Steve Smith took $47,000 in 2013 and Paul Hockin won $35,000 in 2012.

The tournament series has been running since 1999 and is the longest established poker championship series in Australasia.

Last year, the Christchurch Poker Championships main event attracted 202 players and a prizepool of $391,000.

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming our poker guests and to crowning the 20th NZPC Main Event champion,” said Christchurch Casino poker manager Warren Wyllie.

“We expect this to be our busiest The final table of the main event last year.

By Patrick McKendry The All Blacks are taking their medicine as far as Scott Barrett’s suspension is concerned and that extends to the unsavory breakdown activities of the Wallabies last weekend as they eye easily the most important test of their year so far: the battle for the retention of the Bledisloe Cup. They’ve copped Barrett’s threeweek ban for the shoulder charge on Michael Hooper without com-

plaint, an unsurprising approach given Barrett will effectively miss only Saturday’s return test at Eden Park.

Barrett will serve the other two weeks of his ban by missing two rounds of Taranaki’s Mitre 10 Cup campaign, and will be available for the warm-up test against Tonga in Hamilton on September 7 and, fitness permitting, for the All Blacks’ first game of the World Cup against the Springboks a fortnight later.

The All Blacks accept also that they were physically dominated at Optus Stadium, a state of affairs that cannot be repeated.

And while there will be private discomfort – disbelief even – at the illegal and dangerous neck rolls undertaken by the Wallabies, there will be a sense that discretion is the way forward here too, although it was hinted at yesterday.

“I’m just focusing on this week,” Foster said when asked about the neck rolls. “There’s no point in us

highlighting anything else – we’ve been found guilty of something and we’ve just got to take our medicine on that.

“There are some things we’ve got to do better and I’m sure there are other teams around the world that are looking at things they’ve done and realised they’ve dodged a few bullets.”

Former Wallaby Rod Kafer’s assertion that Hooper was deliberately targeted also received short shrift.

“People can say whatever they like,” Foster said. “It doesn’t change the truth which is we didn’t. I’m sure Rod will sit down one night and think that maybe wasn’t the truth after all.”

Lock Sam Whitelock said: “That’s his opinion – but I’ve never been involved in talking about or setting up anything like that.

“Obviously [I am] a little bit hurt hearing someone say that but that’s his opinion and he’s entitled to it.”
