Review to ensure drug test privacy

The Ashburton District Council is to review its drug and alcohol policy to ensure employees’ privacy is protected.

The council announced the review yesterday following media coverage on its acting chief executive declining a random drug test at work.

Jane Donaldson was in her usual role of group manager environmental services, and was also the council’s privacy officer, when she declined the test, as she did not believe her privacy had been adequately protected.

Fairfax reported the story yesterday, saying the “top council boss” refused the test earlier this year.

Council people and capability manager Sarah Mosley said yesterday the council believed the person who informed the news organisation about the issue was “acting with malicious intent”.

“At the time, she was in her usual role of group manager environmental services and our chief executive Andrew Dalziel reviewed the matter,” Mosley said.

“The outcome has been that there is

to be a review of our drug and alcohol policy to ensure all employees’ privacy is protected, as far as possible, and proper processes are followed in regards to random drug testing.”

Donaldson had the full support of the mayor, councillors and senior management team.

“We will be making no further comment on this issue.”

Home detention sentence ruled out An Ashburton man who beat up his friend during a boys’ trip to Queenstown has been sentenced to 200 hours community work and nine months’ supervision.

Ashburton District Court Judge Joanna Maze said yesterday she would have sentenced Scott Andrew Parkin, 42, to home detention but no electronic monitoring was available at Lake Hood, where he lived.

A probation officer said that without electronic monitoring, only jail and community work were other alternatives.

Parkin had admitted a charge of assault with intent to injure following the beating in May. The court was told an argument developed over the use of illegal drugs.

Parkin’s lawyer Paul Bradford said his client had played professional rugby in the United Kingdom and was against the recreational use of illicit drugs.

Since returning to New Zealand he had started his own business.

“His whole life has been marked by positions of responsibility and peo-

ple who are around him clearly are utterly shocked at what eventuated.”

Police had said Parkin and his group had been drinking in a bar when the argument became physical.

Bar staff had to drag Parkin off his friend, who was treated in hospital for concussion.

The defendant left the area but was later located by police.

Judge Maze said Parkin had struck the victim’s head and stomped on him, his loss of control brought about by his alcohol consumption that night.

He had self-referred for alcohol counselling and already paid his friend $1900 to make amends, she noted.

“You are of an age where you can recall that once upon a time when an opponent was down, you stopped.

“That time seems to have passed and a firm response from the court is needed.”

Bradford said Parkin had taken ownership of what was a significant assault but had expressed real remorse.

No ice-skating for third year in a row

Ice on the surface of the rinks at Staveley shimmers enticingly, but it does not have enough thickness for people to skate on.

It’s a case of déjà vu for the rink’s volunteers, who are now facing their third winter in a row without opening to the public.

This season’s mild winter has put paid to skaters’ dreams of gliding about the ice and toasting marshmallows by the attraction’s large open fire.

Spokesperson Ivan Syme is a second-generation farmer in the area and has himself been skating at the rinks since before he went to school.

“I can remember coming up here and you could walk across the river, it was frozen.”

The community-run facility opened in 1949.

“You can’t do much about it, because it’s nature,” the 69-year-old said.

He is not concerned that the series of seasons with no skating might be a sign of things to come due to climate change.

While temperatures were warming up, there was still the extremes, and winters still got cold enough for Bowyers Stream to freeze over.

“I reckon seasons go in seven or eight year cycles, some years ago there was a stretch of no ice, and then we started getting it again,” he said.

The 2015 season had been a brilliant winter and had been among the longest skating seasons, running for at least six weeks.

Curlers struck it lucky this year, with the facility’s curling rink being able to open for a couple of days in mid-July.

Syme said even though the ice was not very thick, letting the water out underneath had enabled it to be used.

NIWA principal scientist-forecasting Chris Brandolino said although weather events such as this year’s mild winter could not necessarily be blamed on climate change, all weather events had a climate change component to them.

And with less frosts expected in future under climate change, it could become more of a challenge to run facilities such as the Staveley rinks.

WINTER MAKING A COMEBACK NEXT WEEK Just as spring is officially on its way, winter is going to make a come-back.

Mild winter temperatures are set to change next week, kicking off a pattern of colder weather and a slow and sluggish start to spring.

Niwa principal scientist – forecasting Chris Brandolino said from about Tuesday onwards the airflow would change to one favouring south-westerlies for eastern Canterbury.

“It will be unlike anything we have seen in the last six to eight weeks.”

Mid Cantabrians have been enjoying mild winter temperatures, and every day so far in Ashburton this August there has been maximums reaching into double digits.

This has been accompanied by little rain, following a relatively warm and dry July.

Super Rugby trophy makes a special trip to Rakaia One of the biggest prizes on offer in world rugby paid a special visit to Rakaia School yesterday.

The Investec Super Rugby trophy, which was won by the Crusaders in the 2018 final against the Lions in Christchurch 10 days ago, was brought to the school by teacher Shane Dawson.

While some trophies were covered by strict no touching rules, there were no such rules for the Super Rugby trophy and the Rakaia kids were welcome to look, touch and have their photos taken with it.

With such a valuable piece of sporting history in his possession for the day, Dawson admitted he was a little nervous.

The trophy weighed a whopping 32kg and he was a little worried any time it got picked up.

Dawson said his step-son played rugby with the son of Crusaders assistant coach Jason Ryan, for the West Melton under16s, and Ryan brought the trophy into the team’s changing rooms on Saturday for a bit of motivation for the young team.

Dawson asked if he would be allowed to bring it to school to show the children on Monday, and the answer was yes. All he had to do was make sure that it got back to Rugby Park in Christchurch by 5pm yesterday in one piece.

Review to ensure drug test privacy

From P1 In the last 2017-2018 financial year the council drug tested about 100 prospective or current employees.

In 2015 the council announced it was rolling out random drug testing of staff as part of its new drug and alcohol policy.

With new health and safety regulations to soon come in, the

council wanted to get ahead of the game by reviewing its policies and introducing the new regime.

It was considered a new area for local authorities at the time, however, the council was wanting to come into line with what was happening in other industries and what was commonly undertaken by local authorities in the North Island.

Mid Canterbury’s 250 primary school teachers and principals are planning a walk of protest when they strike tomorrow.

Schools have closed while teachers around the country down tools to seek more time to teach, lead and support students with additional needs, as well as a pay rise.

The Mid Canterbury group will gather at the Ashburton Domain paddling pool at 11am when they will hear the latest developments in their negotiations with

the Government.

Local New Zealand Educational Institute representative Jade Tonks said teachers were hopeful of news, but if there was none then they would be walking on the footpath beside West Street into the Ashburton CBD. They would have banners and placards with messages about their reason for the strike.

People were welcome to show their support by tooting or joining in, she said.

The teachers and principals

will also be handing out flyers about why their working conditions need to change.

The group will walk along West Street to McDonald’s, then cross to the East Street Green, where they will walk north through the town centre, before heading back to the paddling pool on West Street by 12 noon.

Tonks said teachers hoped to hear plenty of tooting horns in support.

It will be the first primary teachers’ strike in 24 years.

Third drink driving conviction A Chertsey man was banned from driving until December 2019 following convictions in the Ashburton District Court yesterday for drink driving, driving at a dangerous speed and failing to stop for police flashing lights.

It was Troy Scott McEvedy’s third conviction for drink driving, after episodes in 2001 and 2002.

Judge Joanna Maze said some

sort of drink driving intervention was needed and also sentenced McEvedy to nine months’ supervision and 120 hours community work.

Crown prosecutor Andrew McRae said McEvedy was clocked going 156km/h as he drove south on State Highway One near Chertsey about 7pm on July 31.

Police officers activated lights and siren but McEvedy did not

stop and accelerated away, turning onto Chertsey Line Road as he continued south.

He turned off the vehicle’s lights and drove 300 metres on the wrong side of the road, before turning onto a shingle road and sliding to a stop.

McEvedy then threw the keys of the vehicle out of the window.

McRae said he was breathtested and blew 549mcg and told officers he was angry because

his brother had stolen his motorbike. McEvedy’s lawyer Roz Burnside said he had been keeping out of trouble and avoiding alcohol since starting a family, but issues with his brother had challenged his sobriety.

Judge Maze said the sentence also included an assault charge, which arose when McEvedy punched a man who stepped between him and another man during an argument.

Man retains licence after road rage incident A Christchurch man convicted of a serious road rage incident at Chertsey last year was sentenced to five months’ community detention when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Tony James Bates, 46, did not lose his driver’s licence, despite the incident.

Bates had pleaded guilty to charges of assault and wilful damage. He forced truck driver Douglas McIlwrick to pull over and punched him several times in the face. He said the truck and trailer unit had flicked up a stone and broken his windscreen.

Bates also opened the door of the truck, which belonged to Stuart Tarbotton Contracting, and kicked at the steering and ignition, bending the key and damaging the plastic around the steering wheel.

McIlwrick’s glasses were broken in the incident and he was left with a bleeding nose.

Judge Maze said she was concerned by the level of road rage shown by Bates, who had since paid $626 to replace the victim’s glasses and another $750 in emotional harm reparation.

Others to appear before Judge Maze yesterday were: Zachary Ty Boulter, an asbestos remover, admitted breaching community work. He was sentenced to 80 hours in September 2016 but still had 31.5 hours ow-

ing. He said he worked six days a week and had one day with family.

Judge Maze cancelled the community work order and fined him $510.

He was convicted and disqualified from driving for six months from October 9, when his current driving ban expires.

Matthew James Roxburgh, 31, admitted careless use causing injury, a charge that arose after he drove through a give way sign on Middle Road and hit another vehicle, injuring an 84-year-old man.

Roxburgh said he was unfamiliar with the layout of the area and driven through the intersection of Middle Road and Belt Road on June 22 without realising it was controlled by give way signs.

Police said Roxburgh was driving west on Middle Road in a 50km/h speed zone when he went through the intersection.

The victim had been travelling on Belt Road at about 40km/h.

Roxburgh braked to avoid him but his car hit the victim’s sedan and spun it into another vehicle on Middle Road.

The vehicles were extensively damaged. The elderly driver of the sedan suffered bruising to the right elbow and chest and cuts; some of the injuries had taken time to heal.

Roxburgh was remanded to October 1 for sentence, following restorative justice.

Arron Heke, 24, a meat worker, was sentenced to nine months’ supervision after admitting a charge of assault. He was also ordered to pay his victim $1000 within 28 days.

Judge Maze said the charge was the result of a relationship breakup and he had argued with a woman, pushing her onto a concrete pad, tackling her, and punching her.

She said Heke was genuinely remorseful and his actions out of character.

She also ordered him to come up for sentence if called upon in 12 months, effectively a good behaviour bond.

Thomas Tamatea Kanara, 20, of Wellington, admitted driving while suspended on Archibald Street on July 26. He had lost his

Police sergeant Ian Howard said the pair became involved in a verbal exchange on March 21, before Burdett put the other man in a headlock and applied pressure to the throat.

Ambulance stolen When ambulance officers went to St John’s Geraldine station yesterday, they discovered the station had been broken into and an ambulance stolen. Crew members had locked the vehicle in the station garage the previous night about 6pm. St John Canterbury district operations manager Dion Rosario said it was reprehensible that someone would steal an ambulance.

“We are currently relocating another ambulance to use so this doesn’t impact patient safety.” The vehicle was later found abandoned inland from Cave and St John was having the vehicle assessed for damage and working with police in their investigation. A 37-year-old man from Timaru was later charged with theft.

Search for woman

Judge Maze fined him $250, plus $130 court costs and disqualified him from driving for six months. At the end of the driving ban, he must apply for a zero alcohol licence if he wants to drive.

“Your old licence will stop and the only way to drive is by applying for a zero alcohol licence.

Those are significant consequences.”

Colleagues of missing Hamilton woman Mi-Sook Yang, known as Annie, are supporting her family as the search for her continues to be focused on the Waikato River. The police boat spent yesterday back on the Waikato River searching for the 44-year-old who was last seen on Thursday evening when she left her Flagstaff home in her car. Her car was found by her husband later that night on Munro Place also in Flagstaff, near a path that leads to a popular river walk. A police media spokeswoman said the water search would resume today and there were no plans for a land search.

A man awaiting a bed in a rehab clinic for his meth addiction was sentenced to 12 months’ intensive supervision and 140 hours’ community work.

Brendon John Pethig had pleaded guilty to burglary and stealing a $42,000 boat, which he took from the driveway of an Ashburton address in February.

Neighbours of Pethig, 42, in Oamaru thought the boat was out of place at his house and called the police. The boat was recovered and police laid charges.

Judge Maze said Pethig had four previous convictions for burglary, all related to his drug addiction.

Shet said the intensive supervision came with judicial monitoring. “If a review is necessary, the starting point will be imprisonment.”

The first judicial monitoring report will be October 1.

Man still missing An intensive four-day search has failed to find missing Motueka man Jason Campbell. The 35-year-old has been missing for more than one week and is described as 174cm tall with a thin build and dark hair. His silver Nissan Caravan, was located on Takaka Hill on Tuesday, while Campbell was last seen the day before.

Motorcyclist killed A motorcyclist has been killed in a crash near Tutira in northern Hawke’s Bay. Police confirmed a person died following a motorcycle crash on State Highway 2 near Tutira in Hawke’s Bay yesterday afternoon. The crash occurred just after 2.30pm, approximately 1km south of the Tutira Store. Police would not comment further on the incident.

Take care around trains, it may save your life Look right, look left, look for trains.

That’s the message New Zealand Police and the New Zealand Transport Agency are supporting this Rail Safety Week, and it could save your life.

Police will be supporting the week by spreading the message to look first before you cross train tracks. It only takes a few seconds, and those few seconds could save your life.

“Whether you’re a pedestrian, cyclist, or driver, you need to look twice in both directions, as well as listen for trains. Trains can come from both directions on one set of tracks,” Inspector Peter McKennie, Operations Manager: Road Policing, said.

“Just as red light running is dangerous, so is trying to race the bells, lights, or barrier arms.

A train can’t stop suddenly, but if you take that few extra seconds to look both ways, it could save your life.

“As a driver it’s important to ensure there is plenty of clear space on the other side of the train tracks for your vehicle, and any long load you’re carrying or trailer you’re towing, before you drive over the crossing.

“As a pedestrian, only cross at designated crossing points. You might have to walk a little further, but these crossing points are designed and located to maxim-

ise safety. Also consider people with less risk awareness, such as children, who may copy your unsafe behaviour with tragic consequences.”

Project sees positive benefits A project introduced this year to promote a more family friendly focus in sports clubs around the district has seen positive benefits.

Introduced by Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (Acads), the Game On project has had a real focus on the implementation of alcohol harm reduction strategies.

The project consists of two interactive workshops and an accreditation process after the workshops have been completed.

The first workshop is for the club management and bar staff.

It consists of a NZ Police presentation on the current statistics around alcohol related social harms, a refresher of the Sale & Supply of Alcohol Act, followed by a group discussion on the club’s host responsibility policies and practices.

The second workshop covers the health risks associated with risky alcohol consumption and

has specialist input from a GP, physiotherapist and nutritionist.

It then moves onto ways the club can promote healthier and more family friendly environments by designing club specific promotional material that fosters the reduced harm from alcohol.

This year the project has run with both the Rakaia and Southern Rugby clubs having completed their requirements.

Both clubs have provided feedback to Acads in an effort to improve the project and it is hoped that the success will see more clubs taking on the opportunity in 2019.

The Rakaia club has been awarded with a level two accreditation at their end of year ceremony.

This is the highest starting assessment for any New Zealand rugby club and is testament to their willingness to jump in and trial new ideas.

“If a train has passed or is stopped at a station, you still need to check both ways to make sure another train isn’t coming. Two tracks may mean there is a second train.”

Pensioner left bloodied following vicious attack A Christchurch pensioner savagely bashed by an armed intruder on Sunday night has been left scratching his bloody and sore head, wondering “Why me?”

The 70-year-old man, who asked not to be named, was at his Bamford Street home in the Woolston area of the city when he thought he’d better make some tea at around 7pm.

“I’d left it a bit late so I thought, ‘bugger it, I’ll just have some soup’,” he told the Herald yesterday, his white hair stained red with blood and patched up with stitches and staples.

He went towards his kitchen pantry when his tiny bichon frise dog, Kokee, started barking at the back door.

The man, who lost his partner about a month ago, hadn’t heard anything, and thought it was perhaps a cat.

When he went to open the back door, “it opened for me”.

A masked man, dressed in dark clothing, was there and the senior citizen confronted him.

“I thought it was a practical joke, one of my nephews or sonin-law trying to scare the s*** out of me. Well, he scared s*** out of me all right,” he said.

“He grabbed me [around the throat area] and started whacking me around the head.”

Pushed inside, they crashed into the adjoining kitchen area where the attacker rained blows down on the man’s head.

After about the fifth strike to the head area, the homeowner fell to the ground.

He lashed out with his feet.

“Whether I got him in the gonads or not, I’m not sure,” he said, but his kicks resulted in the intruder fleeing back out the same door, chased by the dog.

Still conscious, the man phoned for an ambulance. The call-taker stayed on the line until police were first on the scene.

“There was blood for miles, all over the kitchen floor,” he said.

The man was taken to hospital, where he received seven staples and four stitches to his nasty

head wound before being discharged about 2.30am.

Yesterday, he was wondering what the intruder’s motive was, especially since nothing was taken.

“The biggest question is why? I have no idea why or who it was,” the man said.

“Hey, I’ve got people I don’t like but no enemies that I know of.”

Shaken up, he might have someone stay with him for a while.

“You don’t think that lightning will strike twice but who knows – I wasn’t expecting that.”

Detective Sergeant Brad Grainger described it as a serious assault and appealed for witnesses.

Smoked fish cakes 2 medium (400g) potatoes, peeled 400g flaked smoked fish 1/2 C chopped coriander 4 spring onions, chopped 1T finely grated fresh ginger 1 large red chilli, finely chopped 1t finely grated lemon zest 1 egg, lightly beaten Freshly ground black pepper 2T oil Sweet chilli sauce to serve ■ Place the potatoes in a saucepan of water, bring to the boil and simmer for 8 minutes until the potatoes are half cooked.

■ Drain, cool slightly and grate.

■ Place the grated potato, smoked fish, coriander, spring onions, ginger, chilli, lemon zest, egg and black pepper into a bowl.

■ Mix well and form the mixture into 12 fish cakes.

■ Heat the oil in a frying pan.

■ Cook the fish cakes over medium

Questions over malicious leak

S

ome might see it as something else, but it appears as though the news broken late on Sunday night by some media outlets around a prominent member of the Ashburton District Council refusing a drug test was nothing more than a storm in a tea cup.

And while many might speculate about why Jane Donaldson refused, when requested to give a sample for the random drug test earlier this year – the much bigger question to come from the story is, who was the one who, months later, decided to inform the media and just what were their intentions in doing so?

In their statement yesterday

around the story, Ashburton District Council called the leaking of information malicious – and it’s hard to see a way where it wasn’t exactly that.

Given that this incident appears to have unfolded quite some time ago – and was dealt with at the time by the then chief executive who deemed no further action needed to be taken,

then why are we only hearing about it now?

The mayor, senior council staff and councillors are all said to be in full support of Donaldson over her stand as well, so when you break it down the story is actually quite simple.

A drug test was refused on the grounds of the process being incorrect.

It was investigated by the right people at the time and found to have been done in the right manner and for the right intentions, so nothing more needed to come of it.

End of story.

But it would appear it’s being made to be something much

more than that – and it’s a struggle to understand why.

Drug testing in the work place is common these days, especially with more stringently enforced health and safety laws in place.

But personal privacy should, and must, always be paramount when testing is being undertaken.

So, if in this particular situation that wasn’t offered then it is completely understandable that the test was refused for very good reasons.

At a time where the PC Brigade sometimes seem to have more sway and say than anyone else in the country and tend to jump on anything that isn’t quite the

norm, or doesn’t quite look right – situations like this have the ability to get completely out of hand.

But to the Ashburton District Council’s credit, they’ve jumped on the front foot and come at the problem ready to turn it into a positive.

A change in their process around drug testing is set to be implemented, one which should ensure such issues don’t arise again in the future and they will forever be more aware about the potential damage that can be done to the brand and image of the council by incidents such as this when in the hands of the wrong people.

Farm Debt Mediation Bill’s time has come I

t’s clear from comments on social media – and even from a Cabinet minister recently – that plenty of folk out there think that dairy farmers in particular are sitting pretty in terms of profit of late.

It’s true that milk and lamb/ beef meat returns are currently sound, though strong wool prices remain in the doldrums. What people tend to forget is that many farms are carrying significant debt from leaner years and now that prices are relatively strong, the long arms of the banks are reaching out for repayment – and fair enough too.

For most of the farmers I know, if there’s any spare cash it’s reinvested into the business or environmental improvements to meet tougher regulations.

Our most recent banking survey found that the average farm mortgage had increased from $3.2 million in November 2017 to $3.9 million in May this year.

Across the board the proportion of farmers feeling under pressure from banks rose from about 8 to 10 per cent over the same six months, but for dairy farmers and sharemilkers the rate was closer to 14 per cent.

In past years Federated Farmers has supported voluntary farm debt remediation as opposed to a legislative approach but as

we submitted to the Primary Production Select Committee recently, the time is right for the Farm Debt Mediation Bill now being considered.

In terms of farm incomes, just some of the changes and challenges coming up include geopolitical tensions and even trade wars sparked by Trump v China tit for tat tariffs; potential new environmental regulations and costs; biosecurity incursions; competition from alternative proteins and a potential capital gains tax that would likely dampen the rural land market and erode farm equity.

With these sorts of things ahead of us, Federated Farmers expects to see a greater need for farmers and their banks to work constructively to manage them.

In at least some cases, farm debt mediation will be a useful – and possibly even a necessary – step.

With agricultural debt now exceeding $61 billion, a 1 per cent change in interest rates is worth

over $600m per annum to farmers as a whole. Banks’ decisions can have a huge impact on farm businesses, and farming family’s economic and social wellbeing.

So we’re glad Parliament is considering the Farm Debt Mediation Bill – but it needs improvements.

We told the select committee that the Banking Ombudsman Scheme was a suitable body for administering farm debt mediation and argued that costs should be recovered from lenders.

But we also said it was critical that the Banking Ombudsman Scheme’s $200,000 limit for compensation, and its inability to consider complaints about a bank’s interest rate policies or commercial judgement, needs to be removed.

The Bill amends the Receiverships Act and will defer the appointment of receivers until after mediation has taken place. Arguably receivership is too late in the process so we think mediation should be able to be initiated before things get that dire.

Similar legislation in a number of States in Australia details steps for initiating mediation and this can happen before any enforcement action, not just receivership. Most farm debt mediation across the Tasman is farmer-initiated and that’s what

the Bill here envisages too. But the Australian legislation allows creditors to agree or decline mediation requests, presumably to prevent farmers from making vexatious use of mediation on relatively minor matters.

If a farmer is in default, and the creditor declines to mediate, the Australian legislation allows a farmer to apply for an ‘exemption certificate’ to prevent enforcement action until mediation has taken place.

Feds believes that approach is worth considering here, especially if the legislation retains reference to ‘enforcement action’, rather than the ‘appointment of receivers’ wording we think is better.

Other issues that need to be worked through include who should pay for the cost of mediation sessions. The Banking Ombudsman Scheme might be the right organisation to meet those costs.

Milking season off to good start

Canterbury dairy farmers have got away to a racing start for the 2018-19 season judging by the first six days of Fonterra’s milk collection.

The milk co-operative collected 11 million litres of milk in the province over the first week of August which is up 15 to 20 per cent from the same period last year.

Farmers won’t be getting overly excited yet as it is early days and the extra milk is as much a reflection of the poor start last year as this season’s mild winter, earlier calving and promising grass growth.

Farm Source Canterbury regional head Charles Fergusson said milking arrived off the back of a poor winter last year and hopefully the good start would point to a more normal season.

This did not necessarily reflect a fantastic year would lie ahead, he said.

“I expect a significant narrowing in these percentages as our volumes increase. We expect to collect 185 million litres of milk during August in Canterbury so it is too early to say what impact a good first few days of milking will have.’’

The mild winter – after a couple of wet weeks in June – had placed farmers in a better position and driving around the Canterbury Plains provided a far different picture than last winter, he said.

“It is really early and we’ve got a lot of farmers yet to even start milking but it’s been a very favourable winter.’’

Canterbury provides 23 per cent of the co-operative’s domestic milk.

Fergusson said milk flows for

He said it would be wrong to paint too rosy a picture for dairying because of the mycoplasma bovis cow disease.

“If we can have a good spring it would be positive for everybody.

A good spring consistent with a good payout would lift farmer sentiments.’’

Farmers were disappointed after Fonterra last week lowered its milk price forecast by 5 cents to

$6.70 a kilogram of milksolids for the 2017-18 season.

The co-operative remains firm on this season’s payout forecast of $7/kg, but economists are looking at a lower figure on the back of a 9 per cent drop in the Globaldairytrade auction.

Fergusson said a lot could happen with the season ahead and farmers would be hoping for high milk flows at the peak of the season, usually mid to late October.

Monsanto court ruling concerns New Zealand’s Environmental Protection Authority says it still believes Roundup is safe to use, despite a US court ruling the weed killer contributed to a janitor’s cancer and awarded him $NZ440 million.

Use of a popular weed killer in New Zealand has been called into question after the US court ruling.

A San Francisco jury on Saturday ordered Monsanto to pay $NZ439.1m to a former school groundskeeper, on the basis its product Roundup had contributed to his cancer.

The lawsuit from Dewayne Johnson claimed Roundup caused his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which Monsanto denies.

The company insists hundreds of studies have established that the active ingredient in Roundup – glyphosate – is safe and reportedly plans to appeal the decision.

Dr Fiona Thomson-Carter, general manager of New Zealand’s EPA’s Hazardous Substances Group, said the authority was aware of the US court ruling.

However Associate Environment Minister Eugenie Sage said New Zealand’s EPA already had glyphosate on the list of hazardous substances for a chief executive-initiated reassessment under the hazardous substance reassessment programme.

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup.

Former South Otago organic farmer Graham Clarke welcomed the US judgment, calling it a “fantastic result” but said “it won’t be the end of it of course”.

Clarke has about a decade of experience in organic farming and only recently stepped down from his national role at the Soil and Health Association.

He predicted hundreds of thousands of complaints would emerge after the landmark case.

Arguably, Roundup’s biggest strength – when using it in farming – was that it would kill anything you put it on, he said.

But it had been presented as something that would only affect plants, he said.

There was now a “growing awareness that that’s a load of bollocks”.

Federated Farmers national vice-president Andrew Hoggard said most of the scientific research, with the exception of one report by the WHO, said it was safe to use.

Hoggard said he would be very concerned if the product was banned in New Zealand and added that there was not a suitable replacement for farmers available.

Farmers should use common sense and not apply the spray on windy days, he said.

India’s youth Fonterra’s target

India’s digitally-savvy youths are the target for New Zealand milk in a dairy range by a new joint venture with dairy giant Fonterra.

The partnership is with one of India’s largest consumer companies Future Consumer Ltd and will produce a range of consumer and food service products. This will tie in with growing demand for better nutrition in India, particularly within “New India’’.

The reality is India’s complex mix of wealth and poverty means that not everyone will be able to afford the dairy range.

Fonterra is returning to the tough market after retreating from a previous joint venture in 2009.

Since then Old India’s transformation to New India has accelerated with vast malls alongside corner shops.

Driving much of the demand for better nutrition is the country’s large young population with 70 per cent of its people aged below 45 years of age.

India’s youth is digital, lives in urban areas, leads an active lifestyle, has more disposable income and wants higher quality dairy products.

The new partnership, called Fonterra Future Dairy Partners, plans to launch the first products midway into next year and has begun some product development.

They might include fresh cheese paneer or cultured butter ghee and Future Consumer also has a chilled supply chain so

this might allow it to extend the range beyond long-life milk.

Global Consumer and Foodservice chief operating officer Lukas Paravicini said the partnership would help Fonterra establish a presence in India.

“It will allow us to … make the most of our expertise as we enter the world’s largest and fastest growing dairy industry.

Consumer demand for dairy in India over the next seven years is set to increase by 82 billion litres – seven times the forecasted growth for China.’’

Locally sourced milk and dairy products from New Zealand will go into the range.

Paravicini said the Indian dairy industry was transforming itself.

“This has resulted in a big shift away from more traditional, locally-based dairy businesses with limited product and brand differentiation, to a new era where more value-added and innovative dairy products are in high demand across the country.’’

Future Group chief executive officer Kishore Biyani said the dairy industry in India was flourishing.

“Consumption of milk and other dairy products in India are increasing and will continue to receive strong demand.’’

Future Consumer is part of the Future Group which plans to launch 1100 stores this year.

The group is in 26 of 31 Indian states with more than 2000 trade outlets and 5000 public distribution outlets as well as a nationwide cold-chain.

More pain for New Zealand dollar The New Zealand dollar was roiled by the Reserve Bank’s surprisingly dovish stance last week and economists say there is more downside to come as US interests rates rise and the global trade outlook remains uncertain.

The central bank kept the official cash rate at a record low 1.75 per cent on Thursday and governor Adrian Orr said he now expects to keep it unchanged at least a year longer than previously forecast and could even opt to cut rates, as he seeks to jump-start economic growth.

The spectre of the US-New Zealand rate differential moving firmly in favour of the US – where the federal funds rate is in a band of 1.75 per cent to 2 per cent – weighed heavily on the kiwi.

“The RBNZ made it clear last week that it is concerned about downside risks to the growth outlook, and entirely unconcerned about the looming cost-push lift in inflation,” said ANZ Bank New Zealand chief economist Sharon Zollner.

The kiwi dollar plunged after Orr’s statement, ending more

than 2 per cent lower on the week in Wellington at 66.10 US cents. It hovered at its lowest level since March 2016 Monday at 65.86 US cents as Turkey’s economic woes had investors scurrying for cover.

ANZ senior macro strategist Phil Borkin said he now sees the kiwi trading at 62 US cents at the end of the year versus a prior view of 67 cents. The trade-weighted

New Zealand’s food prices rose in July, once again led by higher prices for takeout and restaurant meals and echoing strong activity in the hospitality sector in a separate indicator of services.

Statistics New Zealand said food prices rose 0.7 per cent in July and 1.1 per cent on the year, with the annual lift driven by a 3.2 per cent jump in restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices. It was the largest annual increase since September 2011 and all items priced in this category increased in price during the year, Stats NZ said.

“Large seasonal changes in fruit and vegetable prices tend to lead monthly food price movements,” Stats NZ consumer prices manager Geraldine Duoba said.

“But price increases for restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food have been consistent, and led annual food price inflation this year.”

Stats NZ had previously said that for every $100 that Kiwi house-

holds spend on food, about $26 goes on takeaways and eating out.

That’s in line with the Business NZ-BNZ performance of services index, also released yesterday, which showed a recovery in services activity last month, supported by strength in accommodation, cafes and restaurants, which are typically linked with a healthy tourism industry.

The Stats NZ data show grocery food prices were flat on the year while milk, egg and cheese prices dipped 0.8 per cent.

The monthly rise was largely driven by higher vegetable prices, which rose 9.2 per cent. According to Stats NZ, lettuce prices jumped 77 per cent on the month, tomato prices lifted 30 per cent while broccoli prices rose 24 per cent.

The price of a 500g head of lettuce was $5.42 in July 2018, compared with $3.07 in June 2018, and $3.30 in July 2017, Stats NZ said.

“Lettuce prices are now at their

highest since the series began, and 2.5 per cent higher than their previous peak in May 2017,” Duoba said.

“July was particularly cold and wet in the North Island where a lot of our lettuce is grown.”

A 7.9 per cent fall in fruit prices partly offset the rise in vegetable prices.

According to Stats NZ, seasonally adjusted food prices lifted 0.6 per cent on the month in July.

The food price index accounts for about 19 per cent of the consumers price index, which is the Reserve Bank’s mandated inflation target when setting interest rates.

Last week the central bank kept the official cash rate at 1.75 per cent and said it expects to keep interest rates at stimulatory levels for longer, given tepid growth and inflation.

The central bank is now forecasting a full rate hike by December 2020.

Government doubles tree planting fund The government is doubling to nearly $500 million the funding for forestry planting from its Provincial Growth Fund, meaning one-sixth of the $3 billion, threeyear fund will be spent on trees.

Regional Development Minister Shane Jones announced the boost after the weekly Cabinet meeting.

The $240 million commitment to plant some 60 million trees will be funded through the PGF with about $118 million set aside for grants and a further $120 million for partnership projects over three years and will come on top of the $245 million already committed to the so-called ‘One Billion

Trees’ project to kick-start the programme, which includes funding for joint ventures and the expansion of the Hill Country Erosion programme.

The funding would “support tree planting in areas where wider social, environmental, and regional development goals can be achieved” rather than clear commercial returns.

“We’re strengthening our support for planting over the next three to four years in areas where there are currently limited commercial drivers for investment, and where wider social, environmental or regional development

benefits can be achieved,” Jones said in a statement.

“The new grants scheme will provide simple and accessible direct funding to landowners for the cost of planting and establishing trees and regenerating indigenous forest. Private landowners, government agencies, NGOs and iwi will all be able to apply.”

Forestry planting has emerged as a key element of the government’s efforts to tilt the New Zealand economy towards action on climate change, land erosion, water quality and regional unemployment, as well as producing a valuable commercial crop.

Secret recordings blasted A secret recording is said to have revealed the moment one of United States President Donald Trump’s closest advisers was given the boot from the White House.

Omarosa Manigault-Newman, a controversial Apprentice contestant who became a White House staffer before her unexpected resignation in December, provided the controversial audio to NBC. However, the explosive recordings reveal her sacking was a far cry from Trump’s reality TV days, when he would cock his finger like a gun and mercilessly proclaim, “You’re fired!” – before sending the contestant home with a wheeled suitcase.

Instead, Manigault-Newman told NBC she was taken to one of the White House’s most secure and secretive rooms – the Situation Room – and quietly told what was happening.

In one clip aired by the network, White House chief of staff John Kelly can be heard saying she would be “leaving the White House”.

“It’s come to my attention over the last few months that there’s been some pretty, in my opinion, significant integrity issues,” Kelly can be heard saying.

The recordings are being slammed as a major security breach and there are now calls from senior Republicans for Ms Manigault-Newman – who has painted a damning picture of Trump in her new book – to be prosecuted.

Kelly can be heard in another clip telling the former Apprentice star a smooth exit would help her reputation, a suggestion Manigault-Newman told NBC she took as a threat.

He can also be heard saying she can look at her time at the White House as a year of “service to the nation” and referring to potential “difficulty in the future relative to your reputation”.

General Kelly responded, “We can, we can talk another time.

“This has to do with some

pretty serious integrity violations. So I’ll let it go at that.

“So the staff and everyone on the staff works for me, not the President.”

In response to the bombshell recordings, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders has taken aim at ManigaultNewman.

“The very idea a staff member would sneak a recording device into the White House Situation Room, shows a blatant disregard for our national security – and then to brag about it on national television further proves the lack of character and integrity of this disgruntled former White House employee,” Sanders said.

The Situation Room is a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, or SCIF, and staff are not permitted to bring

in mobile phones or other recording devices.

“I’ve never heard of a more serious breach of protocol,” said Ned Price, who served as spokesman of the National Security Council in the Obama administration.

“Not only is it not typical, something like this is unprecedented.

“The Situation Room is the innermost sanctum of a secure campus.”

In her book, Ms ManigaultNewman paints a damning picture of President Donald Trump, including claiming that tapes exist of him using the N-word as he filmed his The Apprentice reality series, on which she co-starred.

The White House has tried to discredit the book, with Trump labelling Manigault Newman a “low-life”.

Milano unhappy with reboot Alyssa Milano is the latest Charmed star to have a crack at The CW network over their upcoming reboot of the show.

The original series ran for eight seasons between 1998 to 2006, and in January this year The CW network announced it was bringing the show back with different actresses. The first episode is set to air in October. The announcement upset fans of the original show and led to an online backlash, and Milano has now revealed she isn’t happy about it either.

“I wish that they would have come to us and we would have been involved since the beginning,” Milano said.

Shots fired at Kiwi couple in Rockhampton

The Kiwi couple were staying at the local campground.

A New Zealand couple have been fired at while sleeping in their campervan at Rockhampton, Queensland.

The Kiwi tourists told police they saw a vehicle come over a crest above their campsite and shine its headlights at them before shots were fired at about 5am yesterday.

Detective Luke Peachey said the tourists described a round “thundering” into the side of the campervan at the Rockhampton Music Bowl where they camped overnight.

“They’ve then hit the deck and a second round has rung out which has crashed into the windscreen,” he said.

Police are treating the incident as a deliberate attack but say they have no evidence why the couple would have been targeted.

Police are searching for the vehicle, which fled the scene.

“It’s obviously very, very concerning – the fact that two people were sleeping in this when a firearm was discharged,” Peachey said.

“We’ve very lucky it’s not more serious.”

It’s believed the shots were fired some distance away from where the man, 65, and woman, 56, were camping in an area not easily visible from a nearby road.

“There’s a little bit of distance, which indicates it could possibly be a rifle.”

Police confirmed it was a gun attack.

“We do believe we’ll be able to recover at least one of the rounds.”

Slow news days

BY CONNOR LYSAGHT We are no strangers to uneventful days, and it is painful to imagine how much more boring these kinds of days were a hundred years ago. Old issues of the Ashburton Guardian contain a lot of what you would expect – local developments, war updates, and pages upon pages of agriculturecentric advertising.

However, it seems that there was, at times, very little to report on in Ashburton. This resulted in the publication of the strangest things in the Guardian’s local and general news columns.

Jokes and funny anecdotes were common in the Guardian for many years, but some pieces of writing crossed the line into abstract, almost ironically funny territory.

Some of the weirdest, seemingly most pointless, pieces of writing can be found in these columns, many of which bring one question to mind – why on earth was this published in the newspaper?

Stranger things The Guardian of April 24, 1888 contains some true gems. Right at the very top of the ‘Local and General’ column, where some of the most important information to the community would usually be printed, we have: “F. Marion Crawford, the novelist, is six feet two inches in height”.

Maybe this was explicitly printed at the top of this column as a joke – possibly an inside joke – or perhaps the Guardian earnestly thought this was essential information for its readers?

Most likely, the people of yesteryear simply enjoyed reading the most trivial of facts about things such as their favourite authors, just like how posts and articles on social media intrigue us today.

Either way, this is far from being the oddest thing the Guardian has published around this time.

According to the June 15 issue from the same year, “Some men and women in Sydney have been committed for trial for fortune telling”.

According to the Vagrancy Act 1824, anybody caught professing to tell fortunes would be “deemed a rogue and a vagabond”, and faced criminal trial. They were obviously not very good fortune tellers, since they failed to predict getting arrested.

One fine piece of publishing trumps both of these, coming from the same issue. An excerpt

from “Scientific News” describes a Chinese method for extracting anaesthetic from a frog, whereby the frog is placed in a jar of flour and irritated “by prodding it”.

The frog then secretes a liquid that mixes with the flour, and somebody found that if you dissolve this paste in water, it can be used as an anaesthetic.

We may never know the process of trial-and-error that came to this scientific breakthrough, but it’s worth noting that “numbness of the lips and tongue was produced by applying the liquid to them”.

Toothache? Just reach for your nearest frog.

Worth laughing about?

Less strange were some of the jokes told throughout the Ashburton Guardian, of which there was usually one or a couple per issue.

While representative of Victorian sensibilities, some of these jokes were at the expense of minority or ethnic groups.

These kinds of jokes show how public attitudes have changed (you would hope) in regards to what is funny and what can be published.

An example of a joke at the expense of the Irish, from the April 24, 1888 issue, went as follows: Policeman: “Come along now quietly, or it will be worse for you.”

O’Toole” “Oi’ll not; the magistrate told me the last time niver to be brought befoor him again, and begorra I’m goin’ to obey his instructions!”

Compared to how other minority groups were treated at the time – and sadly, how they still often are – this Irish joke may be as tame as it gets.

Perhaps my favourite joke from the Guardian comes from the

same issue: Brown (to Robinson, who is reading a telegram with a look of anguish on his face), “What’s the matter, old fellow? Somebody dead?”

Robinson (crushing telegram with both hands): “No; somebody alive! Twins!”

And finally, just when it seems like the Guardian of the 1880s was developing a sense of humour, a joke from September 26 of the same year shatters all possibility: “Stockings? Yes ma’am. What number do you wear?”

Customer- “What number?

Why, two, of course. Do you take me for a centipede?”

4 – While it may not be the funniest thing you’ve read all day, this sketch is at least well drawn. Dated 1917 it was penned by Mildred Annie Barwell. Mrs Barwell was a well-known local photographer. The title may be a play on the 1904 entente cordiale, which saw an official friendship between France and England. Certainly the clothing of the mademoiselle and the attire of the English officer reflect the date the sketch was drawn.

Honouring the Fallen The Ashburton Museum, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, has erected in front of the museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. Nine New Zealand records were broken and a world record was almost surpassed when Ashburton hosted the South Island Masters Short Course Swimming Championships over the weekend.

Ashburton Masters Swimmers spokesperson Steve Prescott said despite the lower than expected turnout of swimmers the twoday event was a roaring success.

“Everyone went away having

enjoyed themselves and the meet ran very smoothly,” Prescott said.

Ashburton had hosted the event for three years running now, but this year it only attracted 48 entries compared to around 70 for the two previous events.

Among those in record breaking form was Robyn Crotty – the mother of All Blacks and Crusaders rugby player Ryan Crotty – who broke four records in the 55-59 year age group, while Auck-

land swimmer Brent Foster came within two seconds of breaking the 800-metre freestyle record for his age group.

Ashburton had a number of swimmers in action, including some for whom the meet was only their first or second, and many won medals in their various age groups.

Taking gold medals home were Ashburton swimmers Jacinda Gill, Cherie Summers Wight and Rachelle Baker, while Sarah Hewson won silver and Stephanie

McCallum took a bronze.

Prescott – a past Masters world champion – was also due to hit the water in six events over the weekend, but a torn bicep while doing chin-ups last week all but ended his plans.

He did still take to the water for one event though, the 400m freestyle, which he won for his age group.

In November Prescott is set to head to the Gold Coast for the Pan Pacific Masters event which is held every two years.

Kiwi Ryan Fox has fired a final round two-under 68 to finish tied for 27th at the PGA Championship.

Fox finished the tournament at six-under, 10 shots behind winner Brooks Koepka.

It is the Aucklander’s best finish at a major after coming in a share of 39th at the Open Championship last month.

It is the third straight major that Fox has finished in the top 50.

Fox had six birdies and four bogeys in his round and earns $82,000 for his efforts, taking his total prize money earned in 2018 to more than $NZ2.7m.

“I’m definitely happy but a little bit frustrated as well,” Fox said admitting he probably should have done better in his third round to be closer to the leaders yesterday.

“Good to know that maybe not my best golf of the week could still see me finish pretty high in such a big event.”

“Hopefully my time in one of these big events will come around soon and I can string four decent rounds together,” he said.

Fox said the crowd was the best he’s come across especially when Tiger Woods was in contention down the stretch.

“It was unbelievable. I have never seen anything like it.

“It was six or seven deep down a lot of holes, even for us in not a big named group,” Fox said. - NZME

Tiger falls agonisingly short at US PGA

Tiger Woods is back to the sharp end of tournaments.

The ball rested on the edge of the cup, its logo peeking into the hole for what seemed like forever.

Back in the day, that ball dropped for Tiger Woods.

Yesterday, it wouldn’t budge.

Yes, Woods might have finished second by two strokes to Brooks Koepka at the PGA Championship yesterday to extend his drought without a major for at least eight more months.

But after the scrambling, club-slamming, fist-pumping, electrifying show he put on over a round of six-under 64 – his best closing round at a major – it was hard to believe that dry spell can last much longer.

“I played hard,” he said.

“A bit of a struggle with my game today, but I hung in there.”

More than just hung in.

Even after the excruciating miss on No. 11 – one that looked a lot like his teetering, toppling chip on No. 16 at The Masters in 2005, except that one went in – Woods stayed very much in the mix.

He had a 20-foot putt on the 16th green that would’ve tied him with Koepka, who was two holes behind but may as well have been playing on another course compared to the frenzy in front of him.

That putt slid just past.

And Woods’ last chance to apply real pressure vanished when he pushed his tee shot on the par-5 17th right of the creek running along the right side of the hole.

Woods slammed the head of his driver to the ground, then swung it violently in frustration.

He scrambled to make par but was three back of Koepka, who birdied 15 and 16 behind him, by the time he

reached the 18th fairway.

On No. 18, Woods offered one final flourish. He drained his longest putt of the tournament, a 19-footer putt for birdie, and pumped his fist to celebrate.

Back in the day, that fist pump on the 18th green would’ve been to celebrate a win.

On this day, he was celebrating the grind – and the fact that he simply would not go away.

And, in many ways, it felt like old times for the 42-year-old – he of the multiple back surgeries who could barely swing a club a few years back, but has now contended on the back nine in consecutive majors, only to come up short, more agonisingly so this time than at Carnoustie three weeks ago.

“I never would’ve foreseen that two years ago,” Woods said.

Mixed fortunes on the mat There was personal glory for Ashburton’s two indoor bowlers involved in Saturday’s annual North and South Island test match in Ashburton, but it was overshadowed by the torment of a narrow loss of the overall tie at the end of a long day of play.

Michael Lawson and Grant Wilson both picked up coveted inter-island medals for their efforts in winning the men’s fours tie against their northern rivals,

but they had to so knowing that the trophy that has eluded their side for the past 15 years was once again heading back to north territory.

And after leading the fixture for much of the day, the concept of losing was one which will have taken quite some time to sink in for Lawson, Wilson and the other 18 playing members of the South Island side.

With a good lead heading into

the final round of three on Saturday night, the South Islanders could only watch on as the North Island went on a march to win enough games to bring the scores back to level at the end of the night.

That then saw a countback of ends won during the day required to determine a winner – a situation that the South Island side will have well known they were never going to win.

With the scores locked at 24-all after nine hours of play and close to 3000 individual bowls played during the day, the North Island won the fixture with 15 more ends than their rivals.

Lawson and Wilson’s fours side had their medal won before the final round of the day after winning their first two matches – however they were unable to make it a clean sweep, losing their final game narrowly.

Woakes a superb fill-in for Stokes English cricket is living in a golden age of allrounders, with Chris Woakes the latest to turn a test in his team’s favour.

Just like Sam Curran a week ago in Birmingham, Woakes delivered with bat and ball to put England in command against India.

This performance is timely on a personal and collective level.

England rely so heavily on Ben Stokes in test cricket and Woakes is playing only because the former is on trial at Bristol Crown Court for affray.

Injuries have beset Woakes over the past 12 months and a flogging on flat Aussie pitches confirmed the opinion he is a player for home conditions.

Panthers seeing clearer Penrith centre Dean Whare claims Anthony Griffin’s axing as coach has made things clearer at the Panthers after players had already seen successor Cameron Ciraldo taking over more this year. The Panthers insist their premier-ship charge remains on track after they last week became the first club to sack a coach while in a finals-playing position. But Whare said the team had long been reacting differently to attacking coach Ciraldo. “I think Ciro is a little more vocal than he was,” Whare said. “(Griffin) hadn’t lost the sheds, just the way the boys responded to Ciro and to Hook was a bit different.”

Taumalolo guilty plea Jason Taumalolo will miss North Queensland’s NRL game against Cronulla after he pleaded guilty to a shoulder charge offence.

He was charged for his hit on Brisbane winger Jamayne Isaako in Thursday night’s win over the Broncos and yesterday pleaded guilty to the grade-one offence.

With an early guilty plea he will miss just the one match, however, it comes as a significant blow given the Sharks boast a representative pack.

Larkin Pace attracts some new faces Run and Walk Ashburton members contested their club’s annual Larkin Pace around the Ashburton Domain on Saturday afternoon.

A total of 19 walkers and 16 runners, including some new faces to the club, took part on what was a warm winter’s afternoon. It was a handicap 3km race with the first over the line winning the trophy in each category, and Alison Conway took out the Larkin Pace trophy with her time of 14.54 minutes, while Shaun Clark ran the fastest time of 10.49 minutes. The 3km Strong Walk was taken out by Noel Batty on handicap, in 20.17 minutes, while Dave Strong walked the fastest time of 18.58 minutes.

ABs on Pocock-alert

By Patrick Mckendry The return to the Wallabies of breakdown specialist David Pocock has put the All Blacks, already on notice thanks to coach Steve Hansen’s warnings, on high alert.

Pocock, 30, took a sabbatical last year but returned to the Wallabies for the June series against Ireland and his quality was immediately obvious.

The Brumbies player was especially prominent in the third and deciding test in Sydney, which the Wallabies lost by only 20-16 and the All Blacks are well aware of his pilfering talent stretching back to the World Cup semi-final at Eden Park in 2011.

His return comes amid Hansen’s comments that the Wallabies, who beat the All Blacks in the third and final Bledisloe Cup test in Brisbane in October, will be the favourites at ANZ Stadium.

Hansen, determined to stamp out any potential complacency in his side, has already talked about the need to match the home side’s hunger and attacking mentality.

“He’s always a big threat when he plays,” said rival All Blacks

loose forward Sam Cane of Pocock.

“The way he continually bounces back and plays at a high level is pretty outstanding.

“It just creates an awareness – we’re on more of a high alert than normal around the breakdown.

“In every test match there’s always a big emphasis on the breakdown – whether it’s their ball or our ball, disrupting their ball or trying to get fast ball.

“It will be a focus again.”

Cane’s reference to Pocock bouncing back from adversity is significant because he was given extra attention by New Zealand teams during the recent Super Rugby season, especially by the Highlanders in Dunedin during the home side’s victory.

However, the 69-test veteran, who has been playing international rugby for 10 years, is a tough man to keep down.

An added level of intrigue in terms of the loose forwards has been provided by the return to fitness of skipper and openside flanker Michael Hooper, a player who has been sidelined for seven weeks with a hamstring injury suffered in the first test against Ireland.

David Pocock Hooper’s leadership will be seen as crucial by coach Michael Cheika, who is also a big fan of his ball-carrying ability.

Asked if Hooper, who recently signed a new five-year deal with Australian Rugby, could be hampered by a lack of recent game time, Cane, who is likely to be directly marking him on Saturday,

said: “He’s played so much footy for his age, experience is something he has buckets of despite being only 26.

“I don’t think it will be an issue.

“He has a big ticker and runs all day.”

The All Blacks will include a large number of Crusaders, fresh from their grand-final winning exploits in their pack, and will be keen to honour the franchise’s skipper Sam Whitelock who will celebrate his 100th test cap should he play as expected.

It could provide an extra level of motivation at a ground where last year they were sublime for the first 50 minutes before letting it slip and allowing the Wallabies to run in four tries in a bizarre 5434 victory.

“To play 100 games in the engine room takes a bit,” said fullback Ben Smith.

“The way he prepares for the game stands out for me … his lineout obviously is a big part of his game but there are so many aspects of his game that he’s worked on over the years.”

Cane added: “He’s just a very proud and driven All Black who works very hard on his game.”

NZ clear on aerial laws All Blacks fullback Ben Smith, preparing for his high-flying Bledisloe Cup battle with Israel Folau, feels there’s nothing complex about rugby’s aerial laws. Folau’s one-match ban, for making midair contact with Ireland captain Peter O’Mahony in Sydney earlier this year, ignited debate about rugby’s aerial laws.

Folau suggested at the time there had to be more clarity about the issue, for him and other players around the world. “I just think you have to make good decisions,” Smith said when asked if there needed to be more clarity about aerial rules.

Set for another Foxbridge Talented Matamata mare Underthemoonlight is on target in an attempt to successfully defend her Gr.2 Lisa Chittick Foxbridge Plate (1200m) crown at Te Rapa on Saturday.

The El Hermano mare completed a double 12 months ago when following up her win in the Listed Tauranga Classic (1400m) with a fresh-up victory in the Foxbridge Plate a couple of months later and trainer Karyn McQuade is adopting the same approach this year.

After a win in an open 1400m event at Te Rapa on June 9, Underthemoonlight rounded off the season with a fifth in the Tauranga Classic (1400m) a fortnight later then was purposely freshened for a repeat bid on the Foxbridge Plate.

Underthemoonlight’s wins have been equally divided between slow and heavy tracks, but she has also been placed on dead footing. “She’s not a true wettracker now,” McQuade said.

At seven years of age, Underthemoonlight is nearing time to be put to stud, but no decision has yet been made.

“We’ve talked about it, but that’s all so far,” McQuade said.

McQuade has no firm plans for Underthemoonlight beyond the Tarzino Trophy.

After her second run at the Hawke’s Bay carnival last year she finished third at Hawera in the Gr.3 Taranaki Breeders Stakes (1400m), the feature she had won a year earlier.

Podium proves elusive Ashburton rower Veronica Wall has fallen just short of a podium finish, coming home fourth in the A final of the women’s single sculls at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Racice, in the Czech Republic.

Wall headed into the big race late on Sunday night (NZ time) knowing that she was in for a tough race, rowing alongside five other top-rated scullers including the reigning champion, Esther

Briz Zamorano of Spain.

But even Zamorano found the going tough in the final.

She had the best start and led the way in the early stages, before Tabita Maftei from Romania started to move up.

Part of the junior world champion quad from last year’s regatta, Maftei took the lead and with a 34 rating made a break on the field, as Maria Sol Ordas of Argentina also overtook Zamorano

to take out the second placing.

With Maftei and Ordas in gold and silver positions, the race was on for bronze, with three boats – including Wall’s – in with a shot, but it was Italy’s Greta Martinelli who got the edge and took bronze ahead of Wall.

Earlier in the regatta, Wall had rowed an outstanding semi-final and was just pipped at the post for the win, but had done more than enough to progress to the A final.

Meanwhile, Ashburton’s second rower at the junior worlds, Mollie Gibson was also in action overnight on Sunday, rowing with her crew in the quadruple sculls B final.

The Kiwi crew finished third in the B final, with Italy taking it out.

Italy had the fastest time from the semi-finals, but it was Denmark who got off to the better start in the B final.

But Italy soon found their

rhythm and not only got ahead of Denmark, but pushed out to an open water lead.

Behind them Denmark held on to second with New Zealand and the United States challenging each other for third, with the Kiwis winning that battle.

Ashburton rowing coach Justin Wall – Veronica Wall’s father – was also in the Czech Republic as the coach of the Kiwi single scull and quad.
