Ashburton’s water rally will be missing two key speakers when protestors gather outside the Ashburton District Council offices on Saturday.

Both Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay and Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew were invited to speak at the rally; Mr McKay has declined and Mrs Goodhew says she is most unlikely to attend.

The rally, organised by the Waimaori Lot 9 Action Group will, however, have Labour MP Rino Tirikatene, Green Party MP Catherine Delahunty and a water expert among its line-up.

It is being held as a public display of

concern over to the proposed sale by the Ashburton District Council, of a site at the Ashburton north east business estate to NZ Pure Blue Ltd to establish a water bottling plant. The site comes with a water consent to take up to 45 litres per second, but there has been a groundswell of opposition, with many people believing the new plant would have a negative impact on the district’s aquifers.

Mr McKay said his invitation arrived by email late Monday night. It stated that the rally had been called in response to public interest and with the purpose of publicly informing and discussing the merits and/or weaknesses of this sale. It suggested, that in his position as mayor,

he was invited to speak because the rally organisers believed he would be a “wonderful direct source of information”.

The very specific nature of the subject he was asked to speak on, however, meant he could not accept the invitation, Mr McKay said.

“They have asked me to discuss the merits or weaknesses of the sale and I cannot do this. My hands are tied. I cannot talk about the sale and this is the subject they’ve asked me to talk about,” he said.

Conduct breach accusation

Accusations that he released information about a potential water bottling plant being established in Ashburton could see Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay hauled before a hearing panel of his peers.

While he would not disclose the identity of his accuser, Mr McKay said he was confident he had not breached council’s standing orders and that a hearing would exonerate him of any wrongdoing.

In September last year, Mr McKay said he spoke at an Ashburton Grey Power meeting about where Ashburton was today in terms of its development and where he thought it would develop in the future.

“I talked in particular about the north east business estate and yes, I did mention a water bottling plant was a possibility. I also talked about the Fineboon dairy factory that’s under way,” he said.

At that meeting, Mr McKay said he did not talk about any pending sale of land or about any agree-

ments with any specific company. “There have been a number of people milling around for quite some time for the site. Buyers come calling and I’ve driven around with prospective buyers over the past three or four years.”

As mayor, it was his job to market the district and he would continue doing that, Mr McKay said.

The allegation is that Mr McKay spoke about what was then an “in-committee” agenda item at the Grey Power meeting.

If a code of conduct hearing is held, it will be called by chief

executive Andrew Dalziel. He will be joined by, in this case, the deputy mayor and together they will listen to evidence from the person who has made the complaint and from Mr McKay. A report will then be made to the council and it will either be resolved or heard by a committee of councillors or by an independent committee.

Mr McKay is confident that the process will see him cleared of any wrongdoing.

In terms of any potential breach of standing orders, Mr

Dalziel said that the mayor’s comments at the meeting were in keeping with information that had been available on Environment Canterbury’s website since 2011 as part of the resource consent application to transfer water from the stock water system and return it to the groundwater system in order that ground water could be taken for commercial purposes.

Paragraph 76 of the application specifically referred to a proposed water bottling plant, Mr Dalziel said.

Warm jackets, coats looking for new homes By eriN TaSker

In a back room at Base Youth Centre there’s racks of good, warm winter jackets just waiting for new owners.

They’re not keeping anyone warm where they are, so Base Youth Centre co-ordinator Bexx Soper is urging those in need to pop in and have a look, and give one of the jackets a good home.

The coats and jackets have been donated as part of the Coats for Kids initiative, which has been running for about four years, and is a collaboration between Base and Hype Youth Health Centre.

Established due to concerns about the number of children shivering through cold Mid Canterbury winters without a decent jacket, the service supplied 150 free jackets to those who needed them last year, Mrs Soper said.

With winter 2016 fast approaching, the racks – kindly made for the service by members at the Ashburton Menz Shed – are filled with jackets of varying styles, colours and ages, but with demand likely to shoot up in the coming weeks, they could always do with some more, Mrs Soper said.

“Occasionally at the start of the year we get inquiries from schools because kids are going

on camp and need a waterproof jacket,” Mrs Soper said.

Even if you’ve been before, you can go again – afterall, kids grow fast.

“We encourage people, if their kids grow out of it, they can come in and just swap it for another one,” Mrs Soper said.

They get given some top stuff; a Kathmandu puffer jacket flew out the door pretty quick, and they even got given a double lined ski jacket last year.

“What’s coming in is really good stuff.

“We are getting heaps of warm jackets, and heaps of fleece,” she said.

Sizes range from babies and toddlers, through to adult sizes, and the only rack where the supply is dwindling slightly heading into winter is the 9 to 12 year age range.

Jackets are the main focus, but there’s also a bin full of scarves, hats and gloves – many of them lovingly hand-knitted – for people to pick and choose from.

“The only pre-requisite is if you have a kid that’s cold,” she said.

If you’ve got a child in need of a jacket, head along to Base Youth Centre between 2pm and 5.30pm weekdays.

‘Compulsory fluoridation by default’

Anti-fluoride campaigners are speaking out about the Government’s proposal to hand over the decision about whether to fluoridate public water supplies to district health boards.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman announced the move on Tuesday. Currently the decision as to whether or not to fluoridate water has been left up to district councils.

Ashburton man Don Church led the charge which saw fluoride removed from the town water supply in 2002.

He said the government’s move to wrest control away from district councils amounted to compulsory fluoridation by default.

“That is the DHB’s policy throughout,” he said.

“Those that have spoken out have certainly voiced that attitude but there may be others who haven’t spoken out but I’m not aware of them.”

The Canterbury District Health Board’s stance has been “very profluoride” and if Mr Coleman’s plans

come to pass later in the year, fluoride looks almost certain to be reintroduced to the Ashburton town supply, Mr Church said.

He is not convinced democracy in the community’s right to elect its own representative to the CDHB will give any real leverage to those opposed to public water fluoridation, saying members are expected to kow-tow to the recommendations of the Department of Health.

Some on the CDHB have spoken out against fluoridation but they were very much in the minority and were very brave to do so, Mr Church said.

Satellite communities such as Ashburton will be vulnerable because the majority of those elected to the health board have no vested interest.

“Most of those on the CDHB have to account to Christchurch residents, but not to Ashburton people,” he said.

The majority of Ashburton residents were opposed to fluoridation in the council-held referendum which resulted in its removal in 2002. “I believe the support is still there,” Mr Church said.

“I have responded and asked them to let me know what time the rally is on Saturday – that information was not included in the invitation. However because I have a number of commitments on Saturday I am unlikely to attend.”

Chairman of the Waimaori Action Group Glen Cameron said that while the bottling plant might

create jobs in the district, the number one issue of concern for most people was that water was being taken out of the district.

To ensure people were able to get more information around the sale, Mr McKay and Mrs Goodhew were top of the list of invitees as soon as the rally was planned, he said.

CAREX members share their best weed control methods

Riparian and weed management was on the agenda at a meeting in the Lowcliffe Coldstream Hall yesterday.

Members of the Canterbury Waterway Rehabilitation Experiment (CAREX) from Canterbury University were in the Hinds Drains district to discuss progress with community members, including members of the Hinds Drains Working Party (HDWP).

CAREX is a collaboration between landowners, industry, government agencies and the community. The aim is to find ways to address aquatic weed management, sediment and nutrient management issues in lowland

Canterbury to improve agricultural waterway health.

University of Canterbury researchers have set up two demonstration sites on manmade drains in the district and for the second time invited community members to join their presentation to the HDWP. Professor Jon Harding discussed problems caused by excessive weed growth, high nutrient levels and bank erosion in the drains, and the experiments under way to combat these.

Since the project kicked off in 2014 more than 17,000 locallysourced native plants have been planted along agricultural waterways as part of the CAREX experiment.

PhD student Katie Collins has been measuring the results of experimental weed control stations set up at different sites on the drains.

Professor Harding discussed the effectiveness of weed mat, shading and hand weeding to reduce sediment and to keep the stream flowing.

He said the nitrogen uptake of plants growing in the streambed was negligible. However, wetland plants such as rushes and raupo had “done a fantastic job” of removing nitrates in other areas, the downside being these plants tended to block the stream.

There are already positive signs of native fish and invertebrates returning to the waterways.

Fatalities spark LED signs

Dan Harker has attended countless fatal crashes in 31 years as a police officer, and it’s an experience that never gets easier.

So he decided to do something about it and dug deep into his own pocket, virtually clearing out his savings, to produce a new advanced warning sign which he hopes will catch motorists’ eyes, and prevent more people from becoming a statistic.

He has attended around 100 fatal crashes in his career, but it’s one that he didn’t actually attend that prompted him to take action. That crash was in Mid Canterbury in 2014, when Dutch man Johannes Appelman ran a stop sign at the intersection of Somerton Road and Thompsons Track, hitting a vehicle and killing three of its four occupants – a mother and two 12-yearold girls.

For Mr Harker, preventing intersection crashes was all about early warning, and research led him to active warning signs, using solar powered flashing LED lights and vehicle detection sensors.

Last week, the first group of Mr Harker’s signs were installed in the Selwyn District, at four problem intersections. It’s a trial he’s hoping will make a difference, and lead to them being rolled out around the country, especially in the district which started it all.

“It will be quite symbolic for the Ashburton District Council to put a couple of signs up and to put one

where that really bad crash was, for those families.”

He said statistics showed that in New Zealand, a third of crashes occurred at intersections, and they were often the most serious – particularly in rural areas.

“Going through an intersection at 100km/h, 99 per cent of the time there will be no one there, but the one time there is, there will be a really bad outcome,” Mr Harker said.

He’s been humbled by the response to his signs so far.

“A neighbour who lives about 200 metres from one of the intersections, she just had this big look of joy on her face, and she said they’d been waiting for something like this for so long, and she said even on the first night they could hear cars’ speeds decreasing,” Mr Harker said.

It would be impossible to know just how many crashes the signs prevent, but Mr Harker would be happy even if it was just one.

“Whenever there’s a crash it’s someone’s family, it could be my kids, or your kids.

“To me, it’s all about getting them out there and me being proud of what I’ve done, and my kids being proud of me.”

Mr Harker said the time and money he’d put into the project had been worth it.

“Maybe one day I will get a little back on it, we’ll wait and see.

“But it’s never been about trying to profit off misery, it’s more about I want my kids to be proud that dad’s done something about it.”

The Ashburton District Council, and not its contractor Envirowaste, has provided co-mingle bins at rural recycling drop-off sites throughout Mid Canterbury. A story in yesterday’s Guardian suggested it was the contractor which had provided the bins.

Council waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin clarified yesterday that Envirowaste invested in the changeover in collaboration with the council, and provided the new glass bins and skips. “Council’s part in the changeover was to provide the co-mingle bins,” he said.

Fraudster freed A Christchurch businessman who admitted a $103 million fraud that funded a “lavish” lifestyle has been freed from jail after serving less than half his sentence. Gavin Clifford Bennett, the 58-year-old former owner of IT firm DataSouth, admitted being behind the wideranging Ponzi-style scheme, which included a $23m fraud against South Canterbury Finance.

He was caught after one of the Serious Fraud Office’s largest investigations. In May 2012, he was jailed for eight years for what the sentencing judge described as “unprecedented level of fraud in our criminal history”.

Demand grows and grows Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre has become a victim of its own success and it’s running out of space.

Group fitness classes are full to capacity and that means on-going demand for new classes cannot be met, says centre manager Steve Prescott.

Not only is demand growing for space in existing classes, people are asking for a wider range of classes such as boot camps, chil-

dren and beginners’ yoga, men’s grit and Over the Line classes.

These would be run in blocks of six or 12 weeks and participants would pay up front for each course. They would not be covered by gym memberships so the services would add extra value and would be run through a cost recovery system, Mr Prescott said.

In an effort to accommodate the extra classes, he wants the

Ashburton District Council to fund an $8000 removable floor matting that could be rolled out in the stadium area to provide extra class space. He anticipates the cost would be quickly recouped with the additional classes likely to bring in more than $10,000 a year.

“The demand is massive for classes. We can’t cater for all we want to now and there’s demand for more. Other than building

new rooms we’re asking for money to buy matting that we can roll out in the stadium and roll away,” he said.

With some down time in the stadium in the morning during term time, there was an opportunity to use that space as extra group fitness space, Mr Prescott said.

Road safety heroes sought A road safety group is on the hunt for Mid Canterbury heroes to help spread life-saving messages in Road Safety Week.

Brake, the road safety charity, is seeking people who have made a difference to road safety, and is calling on people to come forward or to nominate family members, friends and neighbours they regard as road safety heroes.

It could be someone who has campaigned for improvements to road safety, or run road safety activities, or it could be a fiveyear-old child who always reminds you to buckle up when you get in the car.

Brake will be communicating key road safety messages as part of Road Safety Week (May 16-22), and the charity will be calling on everyone to take simple steps to be a #roadsafetyhero and help make roads safer.

“Every death on the road is a tragedy and we can all play a part in making our roads safer,” Brake New Zealand director Caroline Perry said.

Inspired by message of hope A fundraising breakfast held in Methven yesterday will help top up the coffers of Mid-South Island Women’s Refuge and Family Safety Service to the tune of about $450.

It was the second time the Mid Canterbury Families Without Violence Network had organised a fundraiser to benefit the women’s refuge group.

Safer Ashburton’s Mary Bailey said the breakfast at the Southern Cross Lodge was attended by more than 40 people.

Guest speaker, Farming Mums NZ Facebook Page facilitator, Chanelle O’Sullivan inspired guests with her message of hope.

Gail Rowland talked about the work women’s refuge does in the community and trends staff were noting.

Calls on the service consistently outstretch funding, she said.

Last year the service supported 176 community-based clients and were funded for 84.

It supported 195 outreach clients with funding for 25 and 72 residential clients with funding for just 27.

A man has been taken to Middlemore Hospital after getting his hand caught in a hopper in East Tamaki. The man was freed by fire services at Nutrimetrics Manufacturing in East Auckland at about 4pm yesterday. An ambulance spokeswoman said the man was being transferred to Middlemore with moderate injuries but could not yet confirm how extensive they were. A manager at Nutrimetrics said he could not comment on how the man’s hand had got caught until emergency services had finished at the scene.

A Tribesman gang member wanted in connection with the disappearance of Far North man Kimble Taipo Moore has been arrested. Rawden James Yates, 35, is in police custody after being arrested by armed police on the Karikari Peninsula yesterday. In a statement police confirmed a 35-year-old man wanted on warrants for alleged offending including aggravated robbery and kidnapping had been arrested in Whatuwhiwhi township. A source confirmed it was Yates. Mr Moore was reported missing by his partner in mid-March. He has not been heard from since March 17.

Crowe fraudster guilty A New Zealand fraudster who claimed to have been employed by Russell Crowe to scam thousands from credit cards was in jail when he was supposedly flying the actor and his entourage around northern NSW. Paul Bennett had in early 2001 flown Crowe and his associates a couple of times but greatly exaggerated their connection, Sydney’s District Court heard on Wednesday.

He had fraudulently claimed on three credit card applications that he was a full-time helicopter pilot on a salary of $120,000 and created fake pay slips from the “Crowe Family Trust” to assist in the swindle.

Court documents show Bennett was paid between $1000 and $6000 for each flight, but was never an employee.

Authorities eventually caught up with Bennett.

He was meant to go to trial in November 2003 on several charges of dishonestly obtaining money by deception, brought for his greatly-exaggerated claims in credit card applications.

But he never showed at court and fled NSW. Bennett was on the run until being arrested aboard a $140,000, 14-metre yacht last February while it was moored near Cowan Creek on the Hawkesbury River, 50km north of Sydney.

He has been in custody since and on Thursday eventually pleaded guilty to four charges over his 15-year-old scams.

Back then, Bennett created documents which purported to show he been paid $10,000 a month by the Crowe trust, from June 2000 late March 2001.

In other applications he lied about working for Crowe for 18 months and living at the Crowe family farm at Nana Glen, inland from Coffs Harbour, for eight years.

Hans Solo jacket sells Harrison Ford has pocketed a mini fortune after auctioning off his trademark Hans Solo jacket. After an intense round of bidding, the jacket that was worn in the latest Star Wars installment A Force Awakens sold for US$191,000, TMZ reports. According to the gossip website, Ford plans to donate the money to NYU Langone Medical Center and the FACES foundation, which funds research for epilepsy. The actor has previously openly spoken about his 25-year-old daughter, Georgia, and her battle with the neurological disorder that causes unprovoked seizures.

At a FACES event earlier this year, Ford explained to New York Daily News Confident how the disorder has affected his household.

Moss and Campbell reunite

Kiwi fraudster Paul Bennett claimed he was employed by actor Russell Crowe (above). from September 1998 to October 2000, and had only done occasional flights for Mr Crowe,” court documents tendered on Wednesday state.

After making it appear as though he was a well-paid employee of Crowe, Bennett first struck at Coffs Harbour and secured a $65,000 car loan to buy a Jeep Cherokee in March 2001.

The next month he used similar fraudulent employment details in order to obtain an American Express credit card with a $6500 limit but eventually spent $7007.97, according to court documents.

Only a couple of weeks later, on May 17, he was given a Grace Brothers credit card with a $3000 limit and racked up a debt of $2997.23.

Having successfully acquired two credit cards, Bennett tried his hand only four days later and was given another American Express card with a $5000 limit.

He managed to spend $9620.74 on that card. None of the debts have been repaid.

Bennett is due to be sentenced at Sydney’s District Court tomorrow.

Moss, 42, and Campbell, 45, first posed for the charity created by Ralph Lauren in 1996 with renowned fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier behind the lens.

This time around, the two models were snapped by photographer Mario Testino in a black and white portrait shot unveiled across UK billboards on Tuesday to mark the 20th anniversary of the charity. Lauren created the fashion movement following the death of a close friend to breast cancer, in a bid to unite the world of fashion to fight against the disease. Supermodel and activist Naomi Campbell spoke about her personal connection with the charity that has supported “cutting-edge breast cancer research” for two decades.

App effective as contraception A fertility app for smartphones is as effective a contraceptive as the pill, according to new clinical research.

The Natural Cycles app creates an algorithm based on a woman’s temperature when taken each morning to build a data plan of fertility - showing the days on which a woman could get pregnant.

It then notifies users to take precautions on fertile days to avoid the risk of pregnancy.

According to a clinical trial based in Sweden involving more than 4000 women aged between 20 and 35, Natural

Cycles scored similar results to the pill on what is known as the Pearl Index.

The index measures the effectiveness of birth control methods by measuring how many subjects out of 100 will experience an accidental pregnancy within the first year of use.

While the pill has a Pearl Index score of 0.3 - meaning about three women in 1000 who use the pill “perfectly” experience an accidental pregnancy - the Natural Cycles’ system has a rating of 0.5, the study says.

Another previous study found the app to falsely predict non-fertile days only 0.05 per cent of the time.

Dr Elina Berglund, one of the app’s creators and a physicist who was part of the team that discovered the Higgs boson particle, said: “Mobile technology is the most transformative trend for healthcare in recent years.

“Natural Cycles uses data instead of chemicals to prevent pregnancies thereby allowing women to educate and empower themselves and take control of their fertility.

“The future of birth control lies in knowing your body rather than altering it with hormonal contraceptives, and we are excited to be leading the way and creating a future where every pregnancy is wanted.”

Natural Cycles also confirmed that the app, which is available and free to download, will be part of further clinical studies in which it will be directly compared with the pill.

The study has been published in the European Journal of Contraception and Reproductive Health Care.

Affleck returns in Batman Ben Affleck will make his return as the caped crusader, starring in and directing a standalone Batman movie. Warner Bros chief Kevin Tsujihara confirmed the news at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Variety reports. Affleck made his debut as the caped crusader, alongside Henry Cavill’s Superman, in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The film, directed by Zack Snyder, has grossed nearly $NZ1.04 billion globally since it opened last month, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Tsujihara added the studio has committed to ten DC films within the next five years including upcoming films Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League part one and two, according to Variety.

Breed ban and owner register, dog problem solved Sue Newman

W

hen a dog goes bad, the inevitable question is, is it the dog or their owner that is at fault.

Currently there’s been yet another spate of dog attacks on humans. The immediate reaction is to seize the dog and euthanise it. Another problem off the streets.

For the victim, however, there is inevitable scarring of both body and mind. And for some, their injuries are so horrific that the scarring is life long.

New Zealanders have a pretty relaxed attitude to dogs. Our dog numbers are very high and of those most are well-loved pets or well-cared-for working dogs.

They’re not the problem.

It’s the dogs that are of questionable breed or mixed breed and the dog owners about whom the same could be said.

It’s very clear there are dogs of certain breeds or mixes that are more likely to go bad but there are a host of other breeds (in the hands of the wrong owners) that can still feature in attack statistics in spite of most of their number doing little more than wanting to lick or love their owners to death.

Unfortunately we don’t ban any dog breeds in New Zealand.

We might have put a stop to the importation of certain breeds, but what’s here can breed at will.

The Ashburton District Council has a register of dangerous dogs, by breed or behaviour but for any of those to be off-limits the government needs to step in and ban the breeds known to have a high level of aggression.

That would address one side of the problem, but it needs to go hand in hand with a new approach to dog ownership. This is a privilege, not a right.

Owning a dog should be like owning a car - apply for a licence, undergo a test of some kind, prove you have a well fenced section.

Attendance at dog obedience or some kind of training classes could be mandatory once your new pet arrives.

If we adopted that two-step process, New Zealand’s land-shark problem would be solved – bad breeds banned, dog owners’ licensed. Dog offences could then be like traffic offences, break the law and you’re fined, continue and you lose your licence and you go on the banned owner register.

YOUR VIEW Water plant It’s good to see the land purchaser has come out and cleared the air relating to possible ownership.

I do have a problem with mayor Angus McKay’s statement that there is no cost to the ratepayers in relation to the water consent.

Operating costs of the stock water network are funded by a unit charge on all property owners who have water running through their land whether they use the water or not.

This cost has risen substantially recently as the operating costs are spread over fewer property holders.

Many of these people have been told that the council can’t always supply water due to the shortage of water at the intakes yet they are going to be able to supply water to allow the well consent to operate for free.

Also there will be times the water going into the ground will be polluted by any manner of things.

Not a good thing given our ground water quality issues.

If this sale goes through, can I suggest that the agreement requires the purchaser pay a royalty of 1 cent per litre to the district council to meet operating costs associated with the recharge consent and the leftover funds be put towards the operating costs of the EA Networks sports complex.

How many times have you desk jockeys out there got an email promoting what sounds like a very worthy cause by having a special day or week for it?

It seems there is a growing movement to promote charities and awareness of social causes by having a special day (complete with a bright colour) at your workplace or school.

You all get on board, register, bring along a gold coin and wear your socks on your hands to support L.H.L.W.M.S. (Left Handed Lawyers With Messy Signatures).

Therefore I propose the following special days and weeks that are really, really, really important and should be implemented quicker than a prime minister can avoid a personal tax or trust question from the press.

every schoolbag was cleaned out in Ashburton once a week, the crumbs could be moulded into Anzac biscuits at a local factory in the industrial estate, creating another seven and a half jobs for locals.

Be Kind To Me Year Did you know that in 2015, according to NZ Police Data, 4436 women were assaulted by men? Only 58 of those were by strangers. Alarmingly 104 of those were boys on their mothers. The total number of assaults works out to 12 a day or one every two hours in New Zealand.

In the time it takes me to sort out a bureaucratic bungle, a woman is assaulted in this country. That’s nothing to laugh about. I think it’s time men started seriously thinking about the crap attitude they have towards women, because our boys are learning from you and are taking it out on their mothers.

Even if we had one day of kindness from men, there would be 12 less assaults.

Twelve women would have a better day. We don’t need a cheap T-shirt or gold coin donation to be kind. Men need to seriously grow up.

Creamy smoked chicken filo pie 2 medium red onions, peeled and sliced 1-2T oil 250g sliced button mushrooms 2T sliced sundried tomatoes, (optional) 2T chopped marjoram or oregano 1 Tegel Manuka Smoked Original Whole Chicken, 1.1kg 250g creme fraiche Salt and pepper to season 12 filo pastry sheets 3-4T melted butter 2t sesame seeds (optional) ■ Cook the onions in the oil in a hot pan for three to five minutes until softened. Add the mushrooms and cook for a further five minutes. Stir in the herbs and sundried tomatoes if using and cool.

■ Tear the smoked chicken into bite-sized pieces and toss into the mushroom mixture with the

■ Brush eight sheets of filo pastry with butter or spray with oil and place into a 24cm flan tin.

■ Fill with the chicken and mushroom mixture and then flip the overhanging filo pastry edges into the centre.

■ Brush the remaining sheets of filo with butter and place on top of the pie.

■ Sprinkle with sesame seeds if wished and bake at 190˚C for 40 minutes.

Jobs go as carpet plants consolidate

Demand for woollen carpets has decreased in the past decade.

Cavalier Corporation has started consultation with its manufacturing staff in Christchurch and Whanganui in relation to a proposed consolidation of its carpet operations.

To realise greater efficiencies Cavalier is proposing to consolidate its woollen yarn spinning operations into a single hub at its Napier plant, shift its felted operations to its Whanganui plant and close its Christchurch operation.

It is estimated this will result in about 65 net job losses across the whole company, however, this cannot be confirmed until staff have been properly consulted and the process is completed.

Cavalier Corporation chief executive Paul Alston says the proposed changes follow an extensive review of Cavalier’s manufacturing processes and on the back of decreasing demand for woollen carpet.

“Demand for woollen carpet has decreased over the last decade and as a result we now have excess wool spinning capacity across our Whanganui and Napier plants. In addition, we have felted yarn capacity constraints at our Christch-

No tax cuts in Budget, says Key Next month’s Budget will not contain plans for tax cuts, Prime Minister John Key said yesterday.

He announced a tax package for small and medium business – the first costed pre-Budget announcement that will cost $187 million over four years.

“There will be no personal tax reform in the Budget,” Mr Key told reporters in Wellington afterwards.

Asked if that included tax cuts, he said, yes.

Essentially it is back to plan A – meaning any tax cuts are likely to be announced next year – election

year – which has a plumper new operating allowance.

For several months now, Mr Key and Finance Minister Bill English have suggested that the operating allowance set for the next four Budgets could be “rephrased” and that tax cuts could be moved to this year.

The new operating allowance for the May 26 Budget is $1 billion; $2.5 billion for Budget 2017 and $1.5 billion each for Budgets 2018 and 2019.

Tax cuts remains a priority for the Government.

In February Mr Key said the

Government’s overall fiscal strategy was to keep a tight rein on spending, focus on results from public services, start to pay down debt, “and look to return any excess revenue on top of this to taxpayers”.

Mr Key said that the Government activity made up a quarter of the economy including schools, hospitals, transport, electricity and housing businesses, law enforcement and defence services.

“Our biggest contribution to the New Zealand’s productivity is in running our 25 per cent better.”

Veges lead food price rise New Zealand food prices rose in March, led by vegetables such as cauliflowers and lettuce, while lamb led a decline in prices of meat, poultry and fish.

Food prices rose 0.5 per cent last month, for a seasonally adjusted gain of 0.8 per cent, Statistics New Zealand said. Prices fell 0.1 per cent in the March year.

Fruit and vegetable prices rose 1.9 per cent in March from February, when they dropped 2.6 per cent. Vegetables drove the gains in the latest month, with the price of cauliflowers soaring 66 per cent to the highest level since the series began in 1994 and lettuce was up 20 per cent. Fruit prices fell 0.4 per cent, led by apples, grapes and pears, although on a seasonally adjusted basis they were up 1.3 per cent.

It means staff at the Castlecliff factory will be cut from the current 108 to 40.

It also means the company’s felting plant in Christchurch will close with 38 job losses.

The company said consolidating the spinning plants in Napier would create 39 more positions, and staff in Whanganui and Christchurch would be able to apply for those jobs as well as the positions remaining in Whanganui.

Cavalier Bremworth chief executive officer Paul Alston said they were already talking to staff about the changes and were aiming to have everything finalised by May 2 and the process completed by October.

He said they had considered consolidating the spinning operation in Whanganui but the plant was not big enough.

“This will be tough for all of our staff, particularly the impacted ones, but we need to future-proof our business to provide ongoing stability and profitability.”

A rejigging of Cavalier Bremworth’s operations will see 68 jobs lost from Whanganui.

The company says to “realise greater efficiencies” Cavalier will move its woollen yarn spinning operations from Whanganui to its Napier plant.

That will affect 108 jobs.

It will shift its felted operations to its Whanganui plant and close its Christchurch operation. That will see 40 jobs come to Whanganui.

The visit by an influential Turkish seed breeders’ delegation to Mid Canterbury last week is a success with market opportunities between the two countries now being explored.

Here to look at our seed production and to make new business partnerships the group engaged with New Zealand seed companies at a business-to-business meeting in Christchurch where positive conversations on future trade took place.

New Zealand Grain and Seed Trade Association (NZGSTA) general manager Thomas Chin said it was hoped new market opportunities would be explored and progressed following their visit.

“The meeting was to build on contacts and networks established during their visit.”

He said they had been impressed with the infrastructure within the Canterbury seed industry.

While in Mid Canterbury the 27-strong delegation visited South Pacific Seeds, South Island Seeds and a Pendarves arable farm.

Sub Union of Seed Industrialists and Producers of Turkey director Yildiray Gencer said the group came to New Zealand because of its reputation as a great seed producer.

“We wanted to see the oppor-

tunities for trade between Turkey and New Zealand.”

New Zealand is not the only country Turkey has been working with to establish strong trading relations within their seed industry.

Turkish vegetable varieties are now found more often in South Korea’s burgeoning greenhouse industry.

In Europe black grass has developed resistance to many herbicides used for grass weed control and is feared by New Zealand arable farmers.

The Ministry of Primary Industries says there is no evidence black grass is established in New Zealand following extensive tracking of all material related to the three seeds found in a Mid Canterbury seed sample.

Senior adviser on plants and environment response, Brad Chandler, said MPI was notified of a black grass seed detection during routine sampling of ryegrass seed destined for export.

Mr Chandler said three seeds were identified from representative samples taken from a 63-tonne consignment, harvested from a farm in the Mid Canterbury area.

He declined to reveal the exact location of the farm due to welfare considerations around the farmer and local community, but reiterated there was no evidence black grass is now established in New Zealand.

“No further seeds have been found to date.”

MPI staff have now turned their attention to investigating possible sources of contamination, including contaminated ryegrass seed used for the harvested crop, contaminated equipment used on the farm and previous crops sown.

Mr Chandler said MPI has placed the contaminated seed under direction so it cannot be sold in New Zealand.

“It can only be moved from its current location for purposes of export and only with

the express authority of MPI.” None of the contaminated seed has been distributed in New Zealand, he said.

The ministry has also traced forward and confirmed the location of offal and straw with all material accounted for.

“We’ve also begun tracing to determine possible sources of contaminated seed and where they may have been distributed.”

The route the truck took with the offal has been confirmed, he said, and surveillance will now be undertaken along that route although MPI had determined all transport was secure.

The farm from where the black grass contaminated ryegrass was harvested has been search and MPI will search any other possible farms once seed tracing is completed, he said.

“Success is dependent on time of year, so will more likely to be in spring.”

Black grass, also known as slender meadow fox tail, is a serious invasive plant that affects winter crops in Europe, including winter wheat, grass seed, rapeseed, forage legumes and barley.

It spreads quickly in cultivated crops, competing for light, nutrients, space and water and results in yield loss.

Black grass could have an economic impact on New Zealand agriculture by competing with winter crop production, reducing yields, increasing cultivation costs, affecting purity of seed lines, and impacting on seed markets internationally.

acked by 60 years of development and rugged world-wide use, this now luxuriously furnished, premiumpriced Land Cruiser 200 VX Limited rightfully sits at the top of the no-compromise end of the SUV market.

And it has the technology to increase the go-anywhere, doanything pedigree of its predecessors.

It’s a big machine, whose new front, complete with scalloped bonnet, both accentuates this and gives it an even more formidable presence, plus it’s tall enough to eyeball truckers.

Land Cruisers come in both eight-seat VX and seven-seat VX Limited guises.

Both are well dressed, have lots of technology and advanced safety features. Both use the revised 4.5-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel, with a new fuel-injection system and a particulate filter.

It’s a strong performer with 200kW, and a tide of 650Nm of pulling power (torque) on tap from just 1600rpm, which means the Cruiser’s weight doesn’t matter and the auto, which changes quickly and smoothly doesn’t need any more than the six ratios it has.

It’s quick off the mark when you want it to be, then on the open road performance is impressive.

While at cruise, when it’s quiet and refined, if you want more power press the accelerator and you certainly get it!

While the stated fuel use is 9.5L/100km, the high 12s were indicated for my drive time.

The interior ambience in the large, wide luxurious cabin is first class – there’s leather furnishing, very comfortable seats (front powered, heated and ventilated), with everything one expects, given the cost of the Cruiser, being present and correct, i.e. four-zone climate air, sunroof, tyre pressure system and much more.

Ergonomics are very good for this “big” trait continues with size and legibility of the controls, size of sat-nav/multi function screen, the cooled centre console, even the door pockets.

Expectedly then, the rear seat space is also large – seating three adults in comfort, complete with seat heating. As well there’s twin entertainment screens and headphones for them.

Two adults will cope in the third row for shorter trips.

These seats, when not used, fold up against the side of the luggage area, so do take up a bit of space, but there’s still plenty of room (full sized spare is below) and the tailgate splits.

into account when behind the wheel, and its armoury of off-road hardware, the Cruiser proved both easy and likeable to drive.

The steering is reasonably light and accurate, while the brakes sensitive and responsive.

Of course there’s body roll when pressed through corners, but the active stabiliser bars that stiffen as G-forces increase, mean it’s surprisingly agile and also predictable through corners.

With suspension soaking up the bumps in a very accomplished manner, the result is a very quiet and refined drive, one that proved

ideal for very relaxed, longer distance touring.

Off-road there’s always an impressive solid feel, and in most situations you feel isolated from whatever the terrain for the suspension quietly smooths it all out.

Even with its road-oriented tyres, the Cruiser in dry conditions felt unstoppable.

For there’s always plenty of grunt, the tried and true, full-time four-wheel drive system (low ratio is quickly selectable) plus the centre limited slip centre differential.

There’s also the new selectable Multi-Terrain system that sets up the smart electronics to cope with different conditions - snow, mud

or rocks etc, and a crawl control, hill-start and more.

A comprehensive safety package includes radar cruise control, blind spot and rear cross traffic alerts, vehicle stability, active traction/trailer sway control plus ten air bags.

FINALE This Land Cruiser now delivers what it has always delivered (which is much more than most people will ever need) and more!

Indeed much more than my limited, but enjoyable, back country aspirations warrant or need. One of these would tick the box amongst my rather extensive (unfortunately still imaginary) wanted vehicle list.

The Town/Country in Timaru was cancelled. The SCCA Inter-club tournament was won by Westend from Timaru.

Some handicaps have changed. Congratulations to those that went down.

For those who went up, next season will be around before you know it and you will be able to redeem yourselves.

Our guest speaker was Phillip Crozier who gave an entertaining account of his life as a turkey famer, an occupation which he shared with our member Barrie Hunt. Phillip started in a small way at Dromore but built the business up till he was selling 50,000 turkeys a year.

Ashburton Writers’ Group The April meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group was held recently, President Julie Fechney welcomed all present. A quotation was read - “Your heart is just the beat box for the song of your life” Rae read from a book about writing, especially having a gripping first sentence.

The assignment for the meeting was “Pay Phone – Your character answers a pay phone. Write about the conversation.” Members wrote of dog, BMW crash, encounter from Jupiter, civil servants, intruders and lost in Paris.

The instant exercise was to start with the words “I had no idea what ‘it’ would feel like”. Members wrote of booking made, no idea, impaled, birth mother, small pig and dream girl.

Evaluation forms were given out, also voting forms for best assignment, this went to Debbie and Gordon.

The meeting concluded at 2.50pm with the serving of afternoon tea.

The assignment for the May meeting is to make a list of things you’re afraid of – pick one fear and write about it.

Cavendish Club Open Day for Cavendish Club 2016 was held at Lushingtons Restaurant. A lovely lunch was enjoyed by all who attended.

Music Club Music Circle: Friday March 18 the Music Circle was delighted to welcome a large crowd when they introduced Audrey Richie and her group to entertain for the afternoon.

Audrey accompanied singers Lorraine and Ron who brought back memories with some lovely old songs.

Rose joined Audrey with piano duets which had toes tapping and also took many down memory lane. There are many old forgotten songs and tunes out there. Poems and readings by Lorraine were very entertaining, so as you can see they are a very versatile group.

Margaret thanked them and presented them with some goodies. Afternoon tea was served and judging by the chatter a lovely afternoon was had by all. Thank you Margaret for arranging an enjoyable afternoon.

Library Circle: For our first “at home” meeting of the year Library Circle members presented a programme of book reviews. Library Convenor, Jennifer, introduced the programme by strongly encouraging more club members to use our library where we have an extensive range of titles – 840 in fact. Authors of books reviewed were Monica McInerny, Joe Bennett, Dick Francis, Stig Laarsen and Catherine Stewart. Topics varied greatly, ranging from family life in the remote area of Gorge River in Fiordland, New Zealand to Stig Laarsen’s world of computer espionage.

Garden Circle: Recently, on a mild fine day the Garden Circle went on a bus trip to Geraldine.

Coronation Target Shooting Club The first night of the club aggregate produced some excellent scores 18 shooters all scoring in the 90’s. Hard to single out anyone but Nina McKenzie’s 100 and Sarah Clifford 99 after a long break just have to be highlighted.

Of the Tuesday night shooters Lindsay Mathieson and Jarrod Ward had a good night while Brian Kerr and Shania Harrison-Lee found the step up a little difficult. Sam Smith covered himself with glory at his first time without a rest. Week 2 another great night, Personal bests to Jayden Collett, Morgan Smith and Heather Ross, Hailey Beevor showed she lost nothing over the summer break.

of the town. Here we found where the handcrafted wooden pole people are made, and stand beautifully in private gardens. There is also a gift shop, where, amongst other things the most attractive blue and white Polish china is sold. This shop is beside a very restful garden, where we had morning tea.

We went on to Geraldine and had a lovely lunch at the Verde Restaurant, after which we wondered round the town. On the way home we visited the “Tin Shed”, where some people “bought up large”!!

Everyone agreed it was a most enjoyable day out and hoped it would be repeated in the future.

Arts & Crafts Circle: On Friday we had a very interesting afternoon, when Heather Holdaway, one of our Arts & Crafts Circle members, very kindly brought an array of beautiful tapestry exhibits which she had made over the winter months for many years. There were many wall hangings both large and small which anyone would be proud to hang on their walls.

The cushions were most attractive and were mostly flowers which could be easily identified. A really worthwhile hobby to have. Lots of Heather’s creations are given away as presents to family and friends. A most interesting afternoon.

Heather was thanked and given a lovely posy of flowers.

Brah Spring in top order Versatile horseman Murray Tapper is expecting Brah Spring to give another genuine account of herself at today’s Otago meeting.

The Timaru-based handler said the Darci Brahma mare was in excellent order for the Wingatui Function Centre Rating 75 and track conditions would be to her liking.

“She’s a lovely horse to train and she’s going well,” Tapper said.

“She’s not up with the best, but in Rating 75 or 85 races she’s very competitive and a mile is her best trip.

“If the weather stays okay we might put her up to 1950m in the

Marlborough Cup. She can get back and do nothing in the first 600 or 800m and she’s got a good sprint – she can pick up three or four lengths very quickly.”

Brah Spring reached her level in the North Island after two wins from the Cambridge stable of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman and she has added a further five victories since transferring south.

“I certainly haven’t done anything different – it’s just easier for her down here,” Tapper said.

“She’s no trouble and she enjoys the open spaces out here with the trotters.”

Hansen excited by new era The answers are developing for All Black coach Steve Hansen as his focus begins to taper towards the test series with Wales.

There were opportunities because of injuries to some players and questions about their return for the three tests in June.

One search area was on the wing because Nehe Milner-Skudder was out for some time after shoulder surgery and Waisake Naholo was still on the uncertain list about his return from a broken leg.

Others like rising wing Johnny McNicholl were being targeted by overseas clubs while Hansen hoped a lucrative television broadcasting deal would retain more players and boost the standards in Super rugby and internationals.

It was time to rule off the All Blacks World Cup triumph and begin a new era and Hansen was excited by those challenges.

“There are two things here, I think,” said Hansen.

“World Cup year we finish early so players get a proper pre-season, 16 weeks - every

Steve Hansen other year they only get 12 - so I think there’s a lesson there for all of us.

“Maybe we could look at giving them a little bit more and extending their pre-season for them.

“The benefits are when they come back into Super rugby they are going to play well

and be fresh when they come back into the All Blacks.

“The other thing I think that is helping them is there is a genuine excitement among the senior guys about stepping up and taking over from the people who I call the shadows.”

Those were distinguished All Blacks like Conrad Smith, Kevin Mealamu, Richie McCaw and Daniel Carter who had moved overseas or retired.

Those massive rugby trees had gone and it was time for others to step out into the sunlight and take over the senior group was excited about doing that. Whenever great players ended their careers, somebody would step up.

Openside flanker Sam Cane was not Richie McCaw and the All Black selectors did not expect him to be.

However they wanted Cane to play to his best potential and that was a challenge the flanker should relish. It was his time to enhance the All Black jersey and that challenge created massive excitement.

The 25-year-old winger or fullback will link with former Auckland coach Wayne Pivac at the Llanelli-based club at the end of the year after signing a two-and-a-half year deal. “I am at a stage in my life that I would like to do some more travel while I don’t have family commitments back in New Zealand, and I am so fortunate to be able to do that with my rugby career,” McNicholl said.

Long wait for Parker An English boxing expert says it may be 18 months before New Zealand’s Joseph Parker even gets a shot at IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

Kevin Mitchell, boxing writer for the Guardian, told Radio Sport’s Martin Devlin on the DRS Show that Parker is an impressive prospect which actually hinders his chance of a title shot against Briton Joshua. That and the fact that Joshua is lining up a huge pay day in a fight against compatriot Tyson Fury, means Parker will have to wait in line. “He’s [Parker] impressive, he’s obviously got power, style. He’s made a good impression. There’s no two ways about that. He’s in the unenviable situation of being slightly dangerous,” Mitchell said. - NZME

Lolohea adds spark

Aidan Mitchell (right) served up a convincing defeat in the latest round of Fast Fours tennis at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Tuesday night.

Mitchell and Connor Brosnahan’s ConAid team combined for a win over the Racequeteers, with Mitchell only dropping one game on his way to beating Matt Wong in the singles, and Brosnahan beating Dan Copland 4-1 4-2. Mitchell and Brosnahan then won the doubles 4-2 4-0.

In the night’s second clash Scruff and Co took on Last Resort, and it started with an upset as Last Resort’s Matt Bubb and Erin Tasker combined for a 0-4, 4-0 (5-2) win in the doubles against Peter Leonard and Christal Brosnahan, before Tasker beat Brosnahan 4-1 4-0 in the singles. Leonard did get one back for Scruff and Co though, beating Bubb 4-1 4-0.

The night’s last match-up in round two of the Terrace Downs Fast Fours’ autumn round, between TKJ and MatJade was won by TKJ’s Jason Feutz and Koji Kawamata winning 3-0 against Jane and Jade Brosnahan.

Warriors coach Andrew McFadden is prepared to give Tui Lolohea time to settle into the five-eighth role but expects his electric running game to add another dimension to their attack in Saturday’s clash against the Canterbury Bulldogs in Wellington.

McFadden admitted he spent much of the past month weighing up whether to bring Lolohea off the right wing and into the playmaking role but said his hand was forced after his recent impressive run of form. “Tui’s had some really good performances on the wing and he’s ready to step into the halves,” said McFadden. “I have been thinking about it for the last three or four weeks but when we had the wins against Newcastle and the Roosters, I didn’t want to stall the momentum.”

Held on a rural property near Mayfield, the event was a fundraiser for Mayfield School and it was open to trailbikes, ATVs and juniors or 70cc bikes and up. “The best thing for Australian basketball is that our players are the best they can be.

Berisha lied over choke: Durante

Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis is confident Australia’s male basketballers still have what it takes to win a maiden Olympic medal in Rio without NBA prospect Ben Simmons.

Simmons, tipped to be the No.1 pick in June’s NBA draft, has decided against playing at the 2016 Games to instead focus on his fledgling career.

Lemanis admits it was always going to be a long-shot to get the Melbourne-born 19-year-old to Brazil given the circumstances, but secretly hoped the stars would align.

“It’s obviously unfortunate that he’s not able to join us for this campaign,” he told AAP.

The coach visited the teenage phenomenon at Louisiana State University while on holiday in the US last November and again in February, and has met with his family on a number of occasions.

“I’ve stayed in constant contact with Ben over time, so we’ve put in a lot of effort to build that relationship and maintain communication around it,” added Lemanis.

“It was always one of those things where the circumstances were just going to make it difficult.”

Over the years a number of players have chosen to compete at an Olympics the same year they were high draft picks draft-

ed - namely Christian Laettner, Emeka Okafor and Anthony Davis.

“Everyone makes decisions for their own reasons and I can’t put myself in Ben’s shoes; I’m not him,” said Lemanis.

Simmons had been included in a preliminary 26-man squad, which will be cut down to 16 by mid-June ahead of the Boomers’ only pre-Games camp from July 5.

Lemanis conceded there was no direct replacement for the 208cm prodigy, but had faith in a group which includes NBA stars Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavedova, Aron Baynes, Joe Ingles and Cameron Bairstow.

Wellington Phoenix defender Andrew Durante has savaged Besart Berisha after the Melbourne Victory striker was cleared to play in the A-League elimination final tomorrow night.

Berisha was handed a twogame suspension for kicking out at Durante in Victory’s 4-1 win in Wellington earlier this month.

But he was freed from the second match of the ban after arguing to a tribunal the long-term Phoenix captain baited him and held him down by the throat.

Durante was incensed to learn of his testimony.

“What a bunch of disgraceful lies. Grabbed him by the throat??

Can I please get sent that footage?

I won’t have my name tarnished by lies,” he tweeted on Tuesday night.

The committee viewed photos and footage showing Durante’s hand reaching out to Berisha while he was on the ground receiving medical treatment after being knocked on the head during an aerial contest.

Berisha told the tribunal as he lay on the ground in a “dizzy” and sore state receiving a concussion test by the club doctor, Durante approached him and moved his boot onto his hip and his hand to his throat.

“He moved close to my hip with his boot and he said ‘You have nothing wrong, stand up’ and he kept pushing at my hip,” Berisha said.

“He was pushing down on my throat and I couldn’t even talk to the doctor.”

While unable to confirm any contact with Berisha’s throat - as denied by Durante - the committee agreed it was Durante’s intention to bait Berisha into reacting, which they said was out of order.

However the committee chairman also warned the feisty Albanian forward he also needed to rein in his own behaviour.

Kurtis Haiu battled to the bitter end Just as he did 53 times for the Blues, Kurtis Haiu battled to the end. But yesterday he could fight no more and the 31-year-old, who also played 76 games for Auckland, died from the bone cancer he developed in 2011.

His former Auckland and Blues teammates were devastated, despite the inevitability of the outcome, to hear of Haiu’s death.

Between 2006 and 2010, Haiu was an integral part of the city’s rugby landscape.

He, alongside the likes of Jerome Kaino, Isaia Toeava and Isa Nacewa emerged in the mid 2000s, and were seen as having the potential

to rebuild the Blues whose last championship had come in 2003.

Winning the NPC title with Auckland in 2007 built confidence a great era was coming for the Blues, but many of the side unexpectedly left after the World Cup and the momentum faltered.

Still, despite the team’s struggles, Haiu still brought the muscularity and mobility on which both Auckland and the Blues were trying to build their game and his physicality and athleticism won him the respect of opponents and peers.

Kaino was one of those peers who never lost touch with his old

friend and said: “Kurtis loved his girls so much and our love and prayers go out to them and the Haiu family.

“Kurtis fought such a brave battle to be with them for as long as he could, which was typical of his character. I loved playing footy with Kurtis and I will treasure those memories of my Blues brother and pray that he rests in peace.”

Diagnosed with the rare Ewings Sarcoma, Haiu tried everything to beat the disease.

After an initial bout of chemotherapy that left him reeling from the side effects he looked into al-

ternative medicines which saw him have surgery and even fly to Switzerland for treatment.

In the end, nothing he tried was able to hold the disease back. Another of his former Auckland and Blues teammates, Onosai Auva’a, said: “Our love and support goes out to his two young beautiful daughters Aaliyah and Sienna, his wife Frieda and the Haiu family.”

“Kurtis simply refused to accept his illness which was probably why he continued to battle his disease for so long and we pray that he is now able to rest in peace.”

Sport Ready to make big ripples

Two Jennian Homes Ashburton swimmers are set to take on the country’s finest at the 2016 New Zealand Age Group Championships in Wellington next week.

Lucy Clough and Jared Scammell will each compete in six events over the fiveday meet.

Seventeen-year-old Clough heads into the champs with plenty of experience, having competed at the national age groups four times before. In contrast, it is Scammell’s first outing at nationals, but the 14-year-old has shown he is up for the task.

Scammell helped his team to two gold medals in the regional relays 200m freestyle and medley, took out silver in the 200m backstroke and bronze in the 50m and 200m freestyle at the Division II champs in Invercargill last month.

With the summer swim season almost over, both Scammell and Clough will be out to end on a high.

Lucy Clough and Jared Scammell will be in action at the 2016 New Zealand Age Group Championships in Wellington next week.

Williamson world’s ‘leading cricketer’ Kane Williamson has been named the first New Zealander as Wisden’s Leading Cricketer of the World.

He and former Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum have also been named as one of the publication’s “five cricketers of the year’“, while White Ferns captain Suzie Bates is the Leading Women’s Cricketer of the World.

The parameters were the 2015 calendar year.

Williamson’s honour has been bestowed by the sport’s longest-

serving annual publication only since 2004. He joins Australians Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne and Michael Clarke, Indians Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag (twice), Sri Lankans Muttiah Muralitharan and Kumar Sangakkara (twice), South Africans Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn, and Englishman Andrew Flintoff as past recipients.

The pair were chosen by Wisden editor Lawrence Booth for the award, which has been handed out in various formats since 1889.

The principal criteria is excellence or influence on the previous English summer. No one can be chosen more than once, although exceptions were made for Englishmen Plum Warner and Jack Hobbs early in the 20th century.

This year is the first time two New Zealand players have been selected in the same season.

The other three were England all-rounder Ben Stokes, born in Christchurch, England’s Jonny Bairstow and Australia’s Steve Smith.

The other Kiwis to achieve the honour are Jeetan Patel (2015), Chris Cairns (2000), Martin Crowe (1985), Jeremy Coney (1984), Sir Richard Hadlee (1982), Bevan Congdon (1974), Glenn Turner (1971), Dick Motz (1966), John R Reid (1959), Bert Sutcliffe (1950), Martin Donnelly (1948), Stewie Dempster 1932) and Roger Blunt (1928).

Drawing on four seasons’ English county experience, Williamson became the 13th New Zealand name to appear on the ground’s “Visitors” batting honours board.

In the ODI series he averaged 79.20 from five innings at a strike rate of 104.

He is currently part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad Indian Premier League squad.
