Nine schools from around the district are putting their differences aside this Thursday and teaming up to make Mid Canterbury a better place to learn.

The Opuke Community of Learning (COL) are holding their first ever massed teacher-only day at Mount Hutt College.

Opuke COL leader and Methven School principal Chris Murphy said the day was a really exciting opportunity for schools with something in common to get together and collaboratively work on their future direction.

“A number of the schools around the district hold teacher-only days on this Thursday each year and it gives families

“But this year we wondered if there would be an appetite to extend the teacher-only day right across the community of learning.”

End of war recalled

The bravery of Ashburton families whose lives were changed forever by World War One was remembered in Ashburton on Armistice Day. A commemoration service at the Baring Square cenotaph on Saturday acknowledged the moment 99 years ago when the guns fell silent and the Allied nations and Germany stopped fighting.

It was a war that affected nearly every New Zealand family. Ten per cent of New Zealand’s population of one million served overseas, of whom 18,000 died and over 40,000 were wounded.

Ashburton deputy mayor Neil Brown, speaking at Saturday’s service, said the war had a terrible impact on the 12,000 people living in the district at the time.

“Among the Ashburton families that were changed forever by the war were the Giles family.

Private Henry Giles was a member of the 4th Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade. Sadly, Henry’s death came just days before Armistice Day. He was killed in action on November 4, 1918,

while serving in France, aged just 32.”

He was the son of William and Ellen Giles of Wakanui.

Brown said it was hard to comprehend how families felt, sending their children to an intense war zone knowing there was a high chance they would not come back.

He said Armistice Day was about commemorating the bravery of families like the Giles and their enormous contribution to world peace.

“It is heartening that each year, more and more people attend Anzac Day ceremonies and others are visiting battlefields in Turkey and Europe. It shows that despite everything that has happened since 1918, people are still interested in our history and the sacrifices that those before us made.”

Remembrance services were held across the country on Saturday, marking the 99 years at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month when peace was declared.

World War One lasted from July 28, 1914, to November, 11, 1918.

Hills making plans for next open day

Charlie Hill is already thinking about the next open day at his Ashburton vineyard.

CharRees, the grape-growing operation he runs with wife Esme on the outskirts of Ashburton, celebrated its second open day on Sunday and the Hills are looking at tweaks for 2018.

They don’t want the day to become so big it loses the family touch they pride themselves on, but they want their loyal friends and customers to have a great time.

Hill said Sunday’s open day was great and included many

existing customers happy to see how their favourite drop was grown. There were also plenty of new faces and people that Hill once delivered milk to who wanted to hear about his vineyard passion.

This year’s event was not just a wine tasting, there were 11 other stalls selling food and craft, as well as music.

The vineyard had 10 wines to sample and sell with lots of interest in the new 2015-16 riesling and the 2015 pinot gris.

The nine hectares of land that surrounds the Hills’ house is planted with several varieties of grapes, which are turned into wine by Waipara wine-maker

Kirk Bray. Hill said the rain stayed away on Sunday, meaning people could sit on their rugs amongst the vines, eat and sip their wines.

“Overall, we were really happy with the day.”

It is a busy time of the year for the Hills, who will be off to the Canterbury A&P Show this week, and then the Methven High Country Fete and the Christchurch Food and Wine Festival.

This summer will be their 11th on the vineyard and the vines are currently bursting with new growth. Grapes are picked around April.

Tour of properties raises $9500 for Methven CareTrust

A house and garden tour of Methven district properties at the weekend raised $9500 for the Methven Care Trust, which is fundraising for a new aged care facility to replace Methven House.

The tour included nine properties that could be viewed between 10am and 3.30pm on Saturday and the rain stayed away so visitors could enjoy both inside and garden scenes.

Free Devonshire teas, with home-baked scones, were handed out at 156 Forest Drive, where visitors enjoyed environs similar to a hunting lodge.

Outside of Methven, properties at Lauriston and Barrhill were also on the map, including historic Corwar, which dates back to the mid 1880s.

Organiser Sue van den Heuvel said it was a great day, with perfect conditions after the weather cleared to blue skies after some spits of rain in the morning.

She was grateful to the homeowners for working so hard to have their homes and gardens in tip-top shape.

The $9500 raised, and tickets sales, were up on last year.

“Feedback has all been very positive, with nine properties in total and people saying that the variety of a mix of new and old homes was very good.”

“The Methven i-SITE staff were very busy on the morning, open-

ing early at 9am to offer ticket sales, with a queue out the door.

“Luckily we still have an i-SITE to offer this point of sale.”

The Methven Care Trust has been fundraising since 2015 towards replacing the communityrun resthome Methven House.

The 90-year-old facility offers 13 resthome beds and four flats but the existing building is coming to the end of its useable life.

The Opuke COL was established under a nationwide government programme in 2014, and represents around 1400 students from Chertsey, Dorie, Lauriston, Mayfield, Mt Somers Springburn, Our Lady of the Snows and Rakaia schools

along with Mt Hutt College.

A second “Hakatere COL” encompasses a further 12 schools from the district.

“I think our community of learning is moving from establishing phase into development,” Murphy said.

“It’s a really exciting time.”

Mini library welcomed by bookworms

Local bookworms are loving Ashburton’s first mini community library at the Ashburton Borough School gates.

The 30-book, all-weather Corral Community Library has been established as part of the school’s Year 8 Primary Years Programme (PYP), and is open for public use.

It operates on a simple premise – take a book out and replace it with another.

“There has been a great response so far with so many students and families using the mini library,” said Year 8 teacher Robert Bale.

“We have started to see new books turn up.”

Bale said the project was inspired by a similar initiative further south. Geraldine resident Cyril Guthrie had set up a number of mini libraries in his town to “give to the community”.

“We invited him to be a guest speaker for the start of our Year 8 PYP Exhibition – the students were inspired by what Mr Guthrie had to say and showed interest in setting up their own,” Bale said.

Fresh air and free fitness classes have proven a winning combination in Ashburton.

The town’s first Fitness in the Park class proved a “massive hit” on Sunday morning, with well over 40 people descending on the Ashburton Domain.

The Methven pub was burgled between 11am and noon on Tuesday, and police were seeking any information from the public about the identity of the thieves, or any suspicious activity seen around that time. In a statement yesterday police said that they had received a good response from the community, and are now following “strong lines of inquiry”. The “very successful” first session was a Pilates class led by Anna King from Anna Fit. “The weather held off and the feedback on our Facebook page has been great,” Johnson said.

This coming Sunday will be led by Summer from Snap Fitness, and also taking turns to lead the classes will be Katie Collins from Exhale Yoga, Tracey Tordoff from Torque Fitness, Monique Rouxel from Figure Fit, and the EA Networks Centre

Gym. “All people need to bring is a drink bottle and a towel – and if it’s yoga or Pilates and they have a yoga mat then they can bring that as well,” Johnson said.

The classes are held on Sundays at 9am in the picnic area of the Ashburton Domain, at the corner of Elizabeth and Grigg streets.

Good weather is on the radar if you’re heading to the Canterbury A&P Show in Christchurch later this week. The MetService says the next two weeks is looking mostly dry and settled, thanks to a ridge of high pressure that moved onto the country yesterday and is expected to stick around into next week. “November typically brings quite changeable weather so a long, settled spell like this is a little bit unusual for this time of year,” MetService meteorologist Stephen Glassey said.

Road works on SH1 Motorists driving north from Ashburton on State Highway 1 over the next few weeks should expect brief delays around the stretch of road near the Ashburton Golf Course. Work gets under way tomorrow on renewing the seal on a 650-metre length of the state highway from around the entrance to Golf Links Road northwards.

New Zealand Transport Authority South Canterbury maintenance contract manager John Keenan said the existing sealed surface is at the end of its life. It’s expected the work will take two weeks, weather depending, with it due to finish on December 4. Keenan said a further 620m rehabilitation project on SH77, adjacent to and north of Mt Hutt Station Road, which was due to begin later this month and be finished before Christmas, will now begin on January 15.

Coalition: A success or failure?

T

he end of this week will mark one month since Winston Peters put us all out of our misery and announced which party, or parties, NZ First would go into coalition with to form the next government.

After 26 days of being on tenterhooks, the decision came as a huge relief to much of the country, not so much for the outcome, but more for the fact that there was a decision.

So, almost a month on, how are we feeling now?

Have you seen the necessary from the new government to feel the right decision was made?

Or are you still waiting to see some action, or perhaps it might be too soon to tell?

There’s been plenty of commentary from both inside parliament and outside it to suggest that it has been a tumultuous time for our new leader and her Labour Party.

The debacle around the speaker of the house was, at best, humorous and one would expect to see plenty of similar tactics from the opposition during the course of the term.

All-in-all though, it seems as though Labour, along with their off-siders have settled into their stride (to borrow a horse racing phrase because it is Cup Day) quite well.

On the local front you would find it hard to argue that members of parliament from this region are also settling in quite well.

Jo Luxton’s maiden speech last week was well received and she will have gained plenty of fans due to the passion and emotion she showed when on stage in front of the country.

National’s Andrew Falloon has certainly kept himself busy and is popping up at any number of events across the Rangitata electorate.

Likewise, Amy Adams – she spoke incredibly well in parliament last week too and will continue to rise up the ranks while National remain in opposition.

So, there’s not a lot to complain about really when you think about it.

The country hasn’t burned to the ground yet either and we haven’t had mass riots outside the front doors of parliament either, so that’s good too.

Maybe we are going to be okay after all.

these tools is relatively simple and can be done by the farmer, and the focus isn’t about being overly exact, it’s about getting movement in the right direction.

Compare that to New Zealand and good old Overseer and the need for farmers to spend thousands on accredited consultants just to enter data. Once again New Zealand feels it has to be the only virgin in the brothel.

Quite frankly this is something we should be copying from overseas. As a farmer I have little understanding of what a change in one area will mean for my farm’s carbon footprint.

You might make changes you think are good, but in reality the effect is negligible. By and large the data New Zealand farmers are already providing to dairy companies for calculating nitrogen losses are the same pieces of data required for calculating greenhouse gasses. That’s ridiculous – we need some synergies here.

Another big discussion point at the conference was the increasing overlap between sustainability and nutrition, particularly in relation to all the alternative plant-based dairy products out there. A selling point of the plant-based alternatives is that they’re often pitched as having a lower carbon footprint.

But in reality, when you look at the actual nutrition you get from them, then to get the same amount as you would from a serving of dairy, you have to consume a lot more. There are a number of studies now where it

Mary Anne Burkman, the internationally renowned nutrition expert, addresses the summit. has been shown that the carbon footprint is actually higher for the alternative when you take into account the need to get the same level of nutrition.

Reducing food waste also came up. It’s estimated one-third of the world’s food is never consumed, be it at the farm where it fails to meet quality standards for sale, in the supply chain due to inefficiencies, or most commonly in the consumer’s fridge.

Why is it an issue? We have an increasing world population that needs food, a reduced area to produce food on, and a focus on climate change. Cutting wastage could make a big difference.

The good news for animal-based proteins is that they often aren’t the ones thrown out of the fridge for turning into a science experiment.

I guess the take home message for me is that it doesn’t matter whether you accept the scientific consensus on climate change or not, or argue about whether some of the experts are truly that expert. It’s irrelevant because the people who buy our

products accept this viewpoint.

So while we have a good story to tell around the carbon footprint of our produce on a per unit basis compared to our competitors, those competitors are trying to catch up to us, and they are coming up with good stories to make it sound like they are doing better.

If we want our customers to keep buying our products we need to show them that we are serious about addressing any concerns they have.

A key point our politicians need to remember: those customers don’t care about what pieces of legislation you write, they care about the actual things that happen on our farms.

After chatting for a while, I directly asked them if they used

i-SITE/Information Centres as they travelled, and I got a very definite “Yes, all the time – we do have our travel guide” (presumably meaning a book or an app) “but we like to speak face-toface with the local people to get the information about the area that you don’t get any other way”.

They were also amazed that most of the small towns in NZ have information centres/iSITE, not just the big cities.

t times we can get wrapped up in what we in New Zealand regard as important and think that surely our customers will also think it is important. But sometimes the big wide world doesn’t think it’s that big a deal.

Likewise, there are issues that we don’t think rate but the rest of the world does.

I recently had the privilege of attending the International Dairy Federation’s World Dairy Summit in Belfast. I went to the conference sessions on animal welfare, farm management and sustainability and also attended the various business meetings on those subjects.

In the environment space, climate change again stood out as the global focus. Food waste was also covered and biodiversity got a bit of mention. But not a lot of talk on water quality – if any at all to be honest.

On climate change New Zealand is the only country focused either on including biological emissions in an ETS or having a carbon charge on them.

The focus of other countries is actual reductions. Many have set reductions goals, generally on an intensity basis (meaning carbon equivalent per litre of milk) but some were looking at total reductions.

In that instance it seemed no country had a solution for how that could be done beyond a reduction in production, and no one sees that as a viable option.

Where countries hadn’t set reductions targets often milk companies have, so despite President Trump pulling out of the Paris Agreement, the US dairy industry has set itself a goal.

Often the companies or countries provide their farmers with online calculation tools.

Horror quake kills 99 Iranian officials have raised the death toll from a 7.3-magnitude earthquake to at least 99, with more than 1500 injured, BNO reports.

The strong quake hit large parts of northern Iraq and the capital Baghdad yesterday, and also caused damage in villages across the border in Iran, the Daily Mail reports.

The epicentre was in Penjwin, in Sulaymaniyah province which is in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region very close to the Iranian border.

Some of those killed were in small Iranian towns while others died in Iraq and at least 300 people are said to be injured.

The quake struck at 9.18 pm (local time) at a depth of 25 kilometres, the monitor said.

It was felt for about 20 seconds in Baghdad, and sometimes for longer in other provinces of Iraq, journalists said.

Fatal disease ‘could be untreatable’ A strain of plague which has already killed more than 140 in Madagascar could mutate and become untreatable, an expert has warned.

There are fears the disease could spread to Europe and America via plane travel as Ebola did in 2014, with 10 African

nations already put on alert for signs of infection.

Now Professor Paul Hunter has warned that, while it would be easy for an advanced country to contain the disease in its current form, he fears that it could evolve into something far more dangerous.

Hunter, a disease expert at the University of East Anglia, said: “If it reaches the UK, Europe or the US it would be similar to the Ebola outbreak.

“We would have a few isolated cases but it shouldn’t spread like it has in Madagascar.

“As with any disease, it’s a

real worry that it mutates and becomes untreatable.”

In total 2000 people have been infected and 143 killed during the current outbreak in Madagascar which is the country’s worst for 50 years.

It can be fatal within 72 hours of infection.

Pleasing growth for A2 Milk

It noted a2 Platinum infant formula continues to be a significant contributor, and there had been strong consumer take up from its successful launch of a2 Platinum Stage 4 product, and strong growth in its a2 Milk branded skim and whole milk powders.

The company noted that a pending court hearing in the Australian Federal Court had been vacated from this month until the New Year with a date to be determined.

The company noted its market share for its a2 Platinum infant formula brand continues to strengthen with Kantar Infant Formula market tracking for the quarter ending September 8 showing a market share lift to 4.1 per cent from 3.5 per cent in the quarter ended June 30.

A2 said its recent launch of Australian fresh milk into Singapore, its first South East Asia initiative, was “progressing well”, and noted it had achieved China Food and Drug Administration registration for its China label infant formula.

In the US, the company said it’s continuing to build distribution in core regions and was building sales following advertising and media campaigns.

It said it was investigating new product opportunities for the market.

In the UK, a2 said it was making “pleasing progress” in the rate of sale for fresh milk, and achieving “continued growth” in its distribution footprint.

The jury deliberated for about two hours before ruling in favour of Walker, awarding him $2.5 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.

Damages awarded ‘excessive’ Army veteran Henry Walker was trying to buy a watermelon at a Walmart in Alabama when his foot got stuck in a wooden pallet.

When he turned, the 59-yearold fell, breaking his hip.

Walker sued Walmart over the 2015 accident, and an Alabama jury has now ruled that he should be awarded $US7.5 million ($NZ10.7m).

“You don’t expect to go into a grocery store walking fine on your two feet and come out on a stretcher,” Walker’s attorney Shaun O’Hara told AL.com.

A Walmart spokesman said the company plans to appeal.

“We are disappointed in the verdict,” said the spokesman, Randy Hargrove.

“We appreciate the jury’s service, however we believe that the damages awarded were excessive in light of the facts of this case.”

The incident unfolded on June 25, 2015, when Walker went to a Walmart store in Phenix City, Alabama, according to court documents.

Walker reached to pick a melon from a display, and his foot became lodged in the pallet under the watermelon container. He turned, unaware that the pallet was there, and fell and shattered his hip, court documents state.

He sued the retail giant on claims of negligence and wantonness.

Walmart had a responsibility to its customers to provide a safe environment and should have known the pallet could cause an injury, his lawyers argued.

But the company said the display was not dangerous, according to a Wednesday court filing.

Orcon is closing its Manila centre to re-establish it on Auckland’s North Shore. The broadband provider said the move, which will create 60 new jobs, is happening because customers prefer dealing with a New Zealand based team. A2 Milk, the best performing stock on the benchmark S&P/ NZX 50 Index this year after its annual profit tripled, signalled that growth has continued into the current financial year.

The company, which markets milk with a protein variant said to have health benefits, outlined positive developments in its Australia and New Zealand, China and other Asia, US and UK markets in presentation notes for delivery at a UBS Investor Conference in Sydney yesterday, although it stopped short of providing detailed figures noting it would give an update at its annual meeting of shareholders on November 21.

Its shares rose 3.1 per cent to $7.64 and have soared 248 per cent this year.

In Australia and New Zealand, its largest geographic market, a2 said fresh milk is “performing well”, with “pleasing” growth in the first four months of the 2018 financial year, compared with the same period a year earlier.

Export schedules remained steady this week but competition is strong for new spring lambs, with reports some are paying up to $7.30/kg for the new crop.

Processors are positive for sheepmeat prospects, with the only uncertainty around the Middle East market, where political uncertainty and weaker oil demand has dampened opportunities in that area.

Sea freight stock to the UK Christmas chilled lamb market has sailed and prices remain at near record levels, helped with the recent easing of the currency.

Mutton schedules keep lifting weekly and sit at an all-time high on the back of Asian demand for product for the Chinese New Year period.

Saleyard demand for both lambs and mutton matches export interest and a small pen of ewes sold at Coalgate for $238 a head.

Beef Schedules lifted this week, as processors struggled to fill orders due to the slow early spring.

How prices will fare once volumes increase both here and in Australia only time will tell but, with the US currency helpful, prices have remained strong.

The prime steer competition for the Canterbury Show brought out the big boys and prices peaked for these animals at $2.38/kg lwt at the saleyards.

Early thoughts by the Anzco chairman about the renegotiated TPP deal look positive for beef, with more opportunities into the Japanese market looking possible.

Deer The record venison schedule roll continues even as the Continental sea freight product sailed and, at this level of demand, air freight appears likely for late orders.

Demand remains across the board, even down to manufacturing cuts, as the European and US markets compete strongly for a restricted supply.

Seedheads are now emerging in pastures and some mowing of paddocks is being used to keep a quality sward after cows have grazed.

Show preparations going smoothly

Having a good team around him has meant the build-up to this week’s Canterbury A&P Show has been relatively smooth for A&P association president Peter Gilbert.

Gilbert, a Winchmore dairy farmer, said although he’s had to attend a few more meetings than usual of late, due to the show beginning tomorrow, preparations for the event are going well.

“I’m involved in the dairy section and there’s been other different section meetings but it’s the event managers who do most of the work.

“I’m pretty happy with the way things have gone. Now all we need is three fine days.”

This year’s show will feature all the old favourites, he said, but there are a couple of new attractions to keep an eye out for.

Polo is back for the first time in quite a while and there will also be a wool-based fashion show.

Keeping up a personal tradition that began decades ago, Gilbert also has cattle in the dairy section of the show, with about 15 head likely to make the journey from Mid Canterbury to the Canterbury Agricultural Park.

Having been showing stock at shows around Canterbury since he left school about 40 years ago, Gilbert is a firm believer in the friendship and fellowship associated with the town meets country event.

He is proud that not only have his three sons inherited his passion for dairying, like him they also love showing, with all three senior judges for at least two different breed societies.

“It means a lot to have my

sons so heavily involved in the show with me over the years,” he said.

“Obviously youth are the future of events like ours and it’s really heartening to see so many great young people get stuck in at the Canterbury A&P Show, especially in the cattle section.”

■ BEEF + LAMB NEW ZEALAND

Strong interest in future farm programme Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s search for a “future farm” is in its final stages and farmers are being urged to get in touch if they’re interested in being part of this unique programme.

B+LNZ is seeking to lease a hill country sheep and beef property with around 6000 stock units for the future farm, which will trial new technologies and farm systems.

The project is part of B+LNZ’s strategy to support farming excellence and lift farm productivity and profitability.

Richard Wakelin, B+LNZ’s general manager innovation, said the response has been excellent and the organisation would draw up a final short-list of farms shortly.

“Farmers are seeing significant benefits to leasing their farm to, or partnering with B+LNZ to run a fully commercial livestock enterprise.

“There has been interest from farming families evaluating their next steps and from farm businesses looking to develop and support a closer connection with urban New Zealand. However, we still want to hear from farmers so they will need to get in quick.”

The level of enquiry has led the project team to start evaluating the original model of a single farm and to start considering how other farms may be connected to the primary future farm, Wakelin said.

“We remain open-minded to the structure of the lease or partnership arrangement; the critical aspect is having the right farm with the right people around it.”

The farm will feature state-ofthe-art monitoring, measuring and communications technolo-

gies while maintaining and demonstrating strong commercial principles.

“The primary objective is for the farm to be a fully commercial model, and only those technologies proven elsewhere to work on farm will be applied.

“Once operating, it will demonstrate excellence in every facet of farming under a strictly commercial framework.

As the future farm aims to push the boundaries of high-performance in all areas – including people, environment, livestock and forages – it will manage the risk of using new technologies so other farmers don’t have to.

The Ashburton Hospital register

mong the extensive archive collections at the Ashburton Museum is the original Ashburton Hospital Admission Register.

Covering the period 1882 to 1908, it contains over 3500 entries that shed light on patients, treatments, lives (and deaths) of many people from Ashburton.

A major project has been to transcribe these records, now that enough time has passed that their content can be made available to researchers.

Now completed, this transcription will become a useful resource for those seeking information about some of the people who lived in the district during those years.

Establishing the hospital A tender of £5022.10.0 was accepted in July 1879 for building the Ashburton County Hospital at the west end of the domain, the same site that it occupies today.

The sketchy diagram of the new hospital scarcely does justice to the long and detailed description that appeared in the Ashburton Guardian on November 1, 1879: “The building presents a very compact and elegant appearance ... spacious passages ... the brick work being tastefully relieved with Oamaru stone ... a pleasant lounge for convalescents, outdoor patients, or visitors.”

It was in part, a two-storied building containing two public six-bed wards, one each for men and women and six private rooms, plus the usual offices for a hospital, kitchen, laundry and operating room.

However, in November, 1882, the inspector of hospitals wrote a damning report, saying the hospital was “badly planned and ill-constructed”. He then went on to identify its shortcomings in some detail.

Staffing was minimal, initially only a master and matron. They had to be a married couple as professional qualifications were not a prerequisite for the positions.

The first couple to hold this position were a Mr and Mrs Madden, whose previous experience had been at Sunnyside Asylum in Christchurch and Timaru Hospital.

and treatment was not necessarily free. Those who could, were expected to pay £1 a week in the public wards and £2 for a private room. In 1889 a woman had her charges reduced from 10 to 5 shillings per day as a result of the cooking and cleaning she undertook. In 1894 a man was discharged for “declining to help”.

Dr James Ebenezer Trevor was the first medical superintendent, initially an honorary position he held until 1905.

He combined that role with his own medical practice and was one of three doctors in the town.

No official opening of the hospital was ever reported, but in a news item in the Ashburton Guardian in July 1880, Dr Trevor announced that as the hospital was “now taking medical emergency cases” they would no longer have to travel to Christchurch.

In his unpublished medical history of the Ashburton District,

Dr Maurice Otley (an Ashburton GP, 1947 to 1972) noted that in 1878 26 patients from Mid Canterbury had undertaken that long journey over indifferent roads to Christchurch for hospital treatment.

He made no mention of how many survived the trip, let alone what success attended their subsequent treatment.

The patients Those early years did not see much use of services – the Ashburton Hospital Journal Centennial Issue (1880 to 1980) quotes 20 patients in the first year, increasing to 200 by 1890.

After 1900, end-of-month figures for males and females were included in the register.

These indicate patients fluctuated between 12 and 17 at any one tme, with the ratio of males to females being approximately 5:1. Children were not recorded separately.

However, these numbers are not a true indication of those in the district requiring medical treatment. There were quite a few alternatives for those needing nursing care and for these we have no records.

Many of the small nursing homes, sometimes dignified by the title ‘hospital’, were in private residences and only catered for two or three patients.

In 1894 a Mrs Hooper of Alford Forest Road advertised herself

as a “Monthly Nurse who would be pleased to receive patients”, meaning she took maternity cases.

In July, 1903, Nurse Cotton opened her private hospital Holmwood in Tancred Street.

In addition it was not uncommon for a doctor to use his own residence to provide some nursing services for his patients.

More stories that the register reveals will be continued next week.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of World War One, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men. The Ashburton Museum, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton, has erected in front of the museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. Viewing Cup Day in comfort

I

’m breaking tradition this year and I’m bloody excited about it.

Cup Day at Addington has always been viewed by me as my day.

I have lived for harness racing and everything about it and Cup Day was the one day of the year that I looked forward to the most.

Working as a journalist, especially one who specialised in racing, for The Press and then in

control of the media team for Harness Racing New Zealand, led to Cup Day changing for me.

All of sudden it became this blur of words.

Radio interviews, appearing in marquees to offer selections or sitting at the laptop writing was about the extent of the day.

I always walked away wondering what had actually happened out on the track because it felt like I hadn’t really had a chance to take it all in.

I still loved it, but I always yearned to be sitting at home – watching the coverage without interruption, with no 10-minute wait to have a bet or 20-minute wait to get a beer.

And so, today I am going to do exactly that.

I’m going to sit on the couch and enjoy Cup Day for what it really is – a day of fantastic harness racing.

Trackside provide incredible coverage and insight on a day like today and I’m looking forward to

watching and taking it all in from the comfort of the chair.

I won’t have to crane my neck to see what’s going on or fight my way through over-zealous security guards and intoxicated patrons on my way to get the next story.

In short, I’m looking forward to falling back in love with one of the biggest days of the year.

There will be a part of me that will wish I was there.

Even if it is just to say that I was there to watch Lazarus win his

Addington Raceway presents an amazing spectacle on New Zealand Cup day, and today will be no exception.

Heaven ready to rock

By Michael Guerin The Heaven Rocks rollercoaster may be about to hit a high again at just the right time.

Because while the oddball pacer has been a huge drifter in the market for today’s $800,000 New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington, at least he is going to make the race now.

And win, lose or draw today a few days later he looks set to be a warm favourite for the rich New Zealand Free-For-All. After a weird few days which started with Heaven Rocks’ trainers thinking he might have to be scratched from the iconic race, he is now back in the fight and apparently ready to rumble.

The drama started when Heaven Rocks worked poorly by his high standards – he can be a daz-

zling track worker – on Friday, a disappointment which followed a poor blood report in the middle of last week.

Co-trainer Natalie Rasmussen contacted stewards and told them the huge pacer was in doubt for the Cup, but blood tests taken on Friday came back Saturday and painted a far brighter picture.

Then Heaven Rocks blazed around the All Stars training track on Sunday, easily accounting for race rival Have Faith In Me. “He feels far more like it and it is all systems go for the Cup now,” said Rasmussen.

“It looked like he was coming down with a virus but clearly he is better now.”

The drama-filled weekend comes after Heaven Rocks’s crazy last six weeks, during which time

he shortened into Cup favouritism after some stunning trials before he appeared to have broken down when racing erratically in his comeback race at Addington on October 6.

While he has improved since with stablemate Lazarus looking faultless, Heaven Rocks has drifted from his market low $2.30 to win the Cup to a nearly backable $8, with Lazarus now into an historic low $1.25.

If the best version of Lazarus turns up, and it usually does, then Heaven Rocks might be racing for second today but a positive performance could see him start a firm favourite for the $260,000 NZ Free-For-All on Friday.

Australian visitor Tiger Tara has been one of the big movers in the Cup market, into third favouritism at $12 and $2 a place after arriving in Christchurch in great shape and thrilling trainer Kevin Pizutto with his fast work on Saturday.

Engine failure again for Hartley

BY DALE BUDGE For the second straight Formula One race Kiwi driver Brendon Hartley has failed to see the chequered flag.

Hartley has been forced to retire from the Brazilian Grand Prix with another power unit failure in his Toro Rosso.

The 28-year-old, who started 18th after taking a grid penalty for a power unit change, was 17th when he was ordered to the lane and told to park his car.

He had taken his stop earlier and was battling for a spot as high as 12th on strategy.

Hartley began the race at the back of the grid and momentarily moved up to 12th after a collision on lap one saw three drivers crash out.

It is the second successive race where the talented New Zealand driver has been let down by the Renault-powered Toro Rosso while all three race weekends he has featured in have been littered with engine issues.

The Toro Rosso team will switch to Honda power next season.

The season-ending race in Abu Dhabi takes place in a fortnight.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel jumped Valtteri Bottas off the start and led the majority of the race to take a consolation win and all but seal second place in the championship standings.

Bottas held on for second to keep his slim chance of second in the standings alive.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, who won the title in Mexico City a fortnight ago, started from pit lane and drove a superb

A hectic first lap saw the safety car deployed after Romain Grosjean lost control in his Haas and took out Esteban Ocon while Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne were forced out in a separate battle that also involved Daniel Ricciardo.

Felipe Massa, in his final race at home in Brazil, came out on top in a late race battle for seventh with McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and the Force India of Sergio Perez.

US takes Fed Cup A 17-year championship drought has come to an end for the United States when they overcame hosts Belarus 3-2 to win a record-extending 18th Fed Cup title. CoCo Vandeweghe and Shelby Rogers defeated Aryna Sabalenka and Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3 7-6 (7-3) in the deciding doubles of the final. “It feels perfectly believable and unbelievable,” Vandeweghe said. “I’m ready for a vacation.” It’s been quite a year for the 25-year-old American, who made it through to the US Open semi-finals since linking up with Australian Pat Cash in June.

Patton Kizzire has survived a late charge by world No.10 Rickie Fowler to clinch his first win on the US PGA Tour with a one-shot victory at the OHL Classic in Mexico. On a gruelling 36-hole final day, Kizzire led by four with six holes remaining, only for three birdies from his opponent to ramp up the pressure. However, when the 31-year-old American managed to get his second to within 10 metres of the flag it was Fowler who cracked, leaving his approach even further away to hand his rival a straightforward two-putt for the win.

Graham a rock for 1st XI Captain Will Graham led from the front when his Ashburton College first XI cricket team took on North West at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

Graham, a week following his selection into the Canterbury Under 19 team, top-scored with 53 and took four wickets. His good figures were not enough to help AshColl over the line however and they failed to chase down the visitors’ total of 195.

It has been tough going in the division one grade for Ashburton College and they are winless going into their game against Shirley Boys’ this Saturday.

There were positives in the

North West game though. Graham won the toss and put North West into bat, the decision paying off with a couple of quick wickets.

But the visitors’ middle order did their job, five making double figures. A direct hit from the boundary by AshColl’s Ben Niles produced one run-out, while Tom Middleton took a couple of good catches.

The run-chase started promisingly with openers Tom Ravenscroft and George Chapman out on 11. Graham came in at four and was a rock over the next couple of hours as batsmen came and went around him.

He and Middleton combined for a defiant last stand, with the number 10 clubbing an exciting 26.

In the end, college was all out for 148 in the 49th over, 47 runs short of the target.

The AshColl side was on the road to the Willows on Sunday for its annual game at the Loburn ground.

They faced some stiff opposition though and found themselves chasing 220.

The host side for the day included the Willows’ leading wicket-taker and former Canterbury player Andrew Nuttall as well as CBHS opening bowler

and other in-form Christchurch premier team players.

Middleton’s good form continued, despite a couple of fast balls that connected above the pad, but College was undone by some wily play and finished well short of the target.

Bowler of the day was Tom Ravenscroft, who finished with figures of 3/21.

The Willows featured several players with Ashburton connections, including Riley Wilson, Sam Hall and Liam O’Connor.

Wilson was player of the day for his side taking a couple of wickets and helping Nuttall blast some quick runs at the end.

Coles out of tour The All Blacks expect Dane Coles to feel like a caged tiger over the offseason after his injury-plagued season ground to a halt in France. First-choice hooker Coles suffered his second serious injury of 2017 when he damaged anterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee during New Zealand’s 38-18 win over Les Bleus in Paris. Scans revealed the damage to the 30-yearold, who was on crutches when the team arrived in Lyon yesterday. Coles will undergo an operation which will sideline him for four to six months.
