The fate of a popular local event is hanging in the balance, as the Mid Canterbury Children’s Day committee desperately seeks more members.

For nine years on the first Sunday of March, local Children’s Day celebrations have brought smiles to the faces of thousands of local littlies with free activities from face-painting to bungee jumping, rides, entertainment and family fun. But unless more helpers get involved, this year could have been the last, chair Alice Czerski said.

“At the moment, we just don’t have enough people on board.”

Children’s Day is celebrated nationally, but few other towns and cities offer activities for free, the committee advised.

The Mid Canterbury event was the brainchild of a group of local social workers wanting to provide littlies with opportunities they might not otherwise experience.

It is now held at the Plains Museum, planned and fundraised for by a small committee of six people and five trustees from all walks of life.

Lorayne Oakley, a long-time member of the organising committee and chairperson and secretary of the Mid Canterbury Children’s Day Trust, said being part of the team that runs Mid Canterbury Children’s Day is a privilege.

“I’ve met so many amazingly generous, dedicated people who have given many, many hours of their free time to organise and implement this event over the past nine years,” she said.

Crash has big financial impact A young Ashburton man who fell asleep at the wheel and caused a head-on crash on State Highway One this year has been saved from crippling financial repercussions.

Victims of the crash were originally seeking $23,000 reparation and an insurance company $35,000 when 18-year-old Ronin James McIlroy appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week for sentence on three charges of careless driving causing injury.

Police reluctantly halved the reparation being sought, but Judge Allan Roberts said even that would be like getting blood from a stone.

The judge said he didn’t want to saddle McIlroy with a debt he had no hope of paying, especially with the insurance company’s civil claim.

He ordered McIlroy to pay $5000 to the victims, brothers from Timaru, and disqualified McIlroy from driving for eight months.

McIlroy’s parents will pay the reparation in 28 days and their son will repay them.

Police sergeant Stu Whyte said the brothers were builders and one owned a building company that was likely to go under as a result of the crash. The pair suffered significant injuries and had been off work for 23 weeks.

The third victim was a friend of McIlroy’s, in the front passenger seat of the car when it veered into the oncoming lane and crashed.

McIlroy’s lawyer Gretchen Hart said insurance had been denied for him because he was a restricted driver in breach of his conditions.

She said McIlroy felt terrible about the damage he had caused and had already paid $3000 to the brothers; his friend had forgiven him. He was very remorseful.

tions post accident had been commendable and he had acted with maturity. He had apologised and recognised that his mistake had devastated the lives of others.

McIlroy and the victims had taken part in a restorative justice meeting, where the victims also learned McIlroy had been born with half a heart and would need a heart transplant before the age of 25.

The judge said no amount of money would placate the brothers and it had been a foolish decision

by McIlroy to drive all night, and that was an element of carelessness.

McIlroy was behind the wheel of a south-bound car about 6am on March 17 when he dozed off near the intersection of Dromore Methven Road. The vehicle crossed the centre line and into the path of the oncoming vehicle of brothers Raymond and Ralph Farnsworth.

The collision destroyed both vehicles and left all occupants with significant injuries.

Ralph Farnsworth suffered facial injuries, a broken pelvis and multiple leg fractures while his brother Raymond suffered five broken ribs, fractured vertebrae and multiple leg fractures.

The passenger in McIlroy’s car, Joshua Bloomfield, needed stitches to his left elbow and was required to undergo bowel surgery.

The highway was closed for several hours following the accident with two of the injured flown by helicopter to Christchurch Hospital.

Victim impact reports from the brothers said the crash had had a massive impact on their lives. One could not yet drive and needed help outside the home, and extra staff had been hired to cover their absence at the building company.

Alpine rupture – a scary scenario

Mid Canterbury will shake with a rolling motion for two to three minutes when the Alpine Fault ruptures in coming years.

Shaking could be of the level to make it difficult to stand, as well as causing substantial damage to fragile or unsecured objects, and damaging a few weak buildings.

The Alpine Fault is the focus of attention this week as the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics has published a special issue with contributions from a range of researchers.

It is 301 years since the last time the fault ruptured, making it overdue for an earthquake, which scientists predict will be in the magnitude of 7.8 to 8.2.

It could result in reshaping the South Island, with the last quake measuring approximately 8.1 and displacing the south eastern side about eight metres along the north-western side in seconds.

“Intense shaking caused numerous landslides, forest dam-

age, and long-term changes to drainage and sedimentation patterns in the Southern Alps, across the coastal plain, and offshore,” researchers said.

They have forecast varying shaking intensities in the South Island according to a model for a magnitude 8 quake starting in Milford Sound, and ranked them on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. They range up to a level of 10, with pockets at this “very destructive” level occurring along the West Coast.

At the level of 10, many buildings are damaged and most weak buildings are destroyed.

In the model, Mid Canterbury has effects ranging from six (slightly damaging) to seven (damaging) on the scale.

Level six means the quake would be felt by all, people and animals would be alarmed, objects would move and fall from walls and shelves, and slight non-structural damage to buildings could occur. Level seven means there would be general alarm, with people experiencing difficulty standing, substantial

damage to unsecured objects and a few weak buildings would be damaged.

Science lead on one of the papers in the journal issue, Caroline Orchiston, said with Mid Canterbury some way from the fault, which is along the western side of the Southern Alps, shaking would not be severe like it had been in Christchurch on February 22, 2011. And the district would be likely to experience a rolling motion, due to the sediments the district was located on, and this would reverberate for up to two minutes.

“Canterbury is sitting on a basin of sediments and there is not a lot of hard rock, so seismic waves bounce around in those sediments, which means shaking would go on for longer,” Orchiston said.

Orchiston said if the rupture in the fault occurred at a different location to the modelled location of Milford Sound, such as near Hokitika, the intensity for Mid Canterbury would still be likely to go no higher than the level of seven.

Terminology the greatest hurdle

Mid Cantabrian John Ferguson may have 27 years’ experience as a rural firefighter, but little could have prepared him for the unbelievable conditions in California.

Amid miles of scorched land, constantly roaring flames and colossal, kilometre-high walls of smoke, Ferguson has spent the past five weeks helping to battle some of the largest wildfires in the state’s history.

Ferguson dropped everything to go on deployment last month with Lauriston Rural Fire Force volunteer Mark Shears, Timaru Senior Station Officer Kevin Donaldson, of Ashburton – and 143 other firefighters from New Zealand and Australia.

He was set to work on the Carr Fire, which sparked from the mechanical failure of a vehicle near Redding, and proceeded to scorch around 100,000 hectares of the Shasta and Trinity Counties before being contained on August 30.

The fire caused three fatalities and became renown around the world for the 15 metre vortex or firenado it created, Ferguson said.

“Just to get to where we were working each day would take one and a half, two hours driving through all the burnt bits,” Ferguson said.

“Occasionally you’d come across a wee town and sometimes it would be untouched. But other times you’d see all these houses that had been lost and that was very sobering.”

Working as a taskforce leader, Ferguson would be given six fire engines from around the US to put to task each day.

The conditions in which they worked were taxing – extremely hot, dry, smoky and dusty, he said.

But the biggest challenge was not the harsh conditions, he said, nor the poison oak, nor the snakes, not even the enormous

brown bears which regularly ambled past.

“It was probably the terminology.”

The trip was Ferguson’s first deployment overseas and he said there was a lot to learn about the American system of fire management, including the language, equipment and technology they used and their differing techniques of firefighting.

“And I think they learnt things from us.”

With so many different agen-

cies contributing to the firefighting effort, Ferguson said the relaxed, calm, Kiwi manner and their ability to get on with everybody was definitely a strength.

Ferguson and the New Zealand firefighters worked for 14 consecutive days at a time, before a two-day break.

The Kiwi firefighters woke at 5am each day ahead of their 6am briefings, and worked throughout the day until the night-crew took over. They would get back to their 12-man tent to sleep at

around 9.30pm each night.

As well as daily phone conversations with his wife and daughter back home, Ferguson said his spirits were kept up through the long days by the incredible response from the locals.

“When we arrived there were signs up all around the motorways thanking the firefighters.

People also stop you and thank you in the street. One really cool thing was a little girl, about three, four years old, about the same age as my grandkids, who handed me a little thank you note at the gate one day. It’s still in my wallet,” he said.

“Another time I got back to camp and on my cot there was an envelope full of thank you messages from a class at a school, maybe Year 5 or 6.

“They’d been learning about New Zealand because there were Kia Oras. I must write back to that school.”

The friendships he made with fellow firefighters, from New Zealand and afar, will also stick with him, he said.

Teams swapped t-shirts and vowed to stay in touch.

But for now it’s a matter of family time, enjoying a comfy bed, and simply soaking up the big experience, he said.

Mayfield Rural Fire Force’s Tim Rowe was among a contingent of 54 firefighters deployed to help combat wildfires in Canada last month and also returned last weekend.

As of yesterday, there were still 25 fires of note burning in California and 485 wildfires burning in Canada.

It costs around $12,000 to provide the free rides, refreshments and activities each year, which committee members fundraise by holding sausage sizzles and other activities, and through grant

funding. The committee is seeking new members to attend meetings, discuss new ideas and help plan for the day.

It is also seeking trustees to support the committee and provide guidance.

If enough people step up to help, they hope they will still be able to hold a Children’s Day on March 3 next year.

Methven man faces third drink driving charge A Methven man who uses a spreadsheet to keep track of his alcohol consumption was convicted of drink driving when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week.

Paddy Frederick Helmore, 70, an architect, had admitted driving with 679mcg on Methven highway on June 14. It was his third drink driving conviction.

Judge Allan Roberts said Helmore had been given a final warning at his last appearance in 2002 that he would go to jail if he was caught again.

But defence counsel Paul Bradford said Helmore had gone to extreme lengths since then to ameliorate his alcohol intake. He kept records of how much he was drinking and had reduced his consumption to healthier levels.

But on the night in question he had had too much to drink.

Police spotted him on the highway about 9pm; he was driving slowly and swerving and failed a breath test.

Judge Roberts said Helmore did not accept he was an alcoholic yet his records showed the longest period he had gone without a drink was 36 days.

“You produced a spreadsheet to show the interviewing officer that you are committed to monitoring your consumption and noting the trends in it.”

The judge said Helmore was at liberty to drink, even if it caused those around him despair.

“But it is not your entitlement to drive repeatedly on our roadways having taken that liquor. The justification process you entered into would certainly point to a problem.”

He said a sentence of community work would only be a problem for those required to drive Helmore to Ashburton and back, so he imposed a sentence of three months’ community detention, with a 7pm to 7am curfew.

He also fined Helmore $900, with $130 court costs and disqualified him from driving for 12 months.

The creators are hoping schools and other venues around Ashburton will be keen to host their flock in coming weeks.

“They’ve been sighted down at the coast and may make their way up,” she said.

Woman runs off with cigarettes

The owners of the First & Last Dairy in Tinwald are asking a woman to step forward and show some honesty after she ran off with a packet of cigarettes on Tuesday.

The woman, thought to be aged in her 40s or 50s, had been intending to buy the cigarettes but panicked when her card was declined and made a dash for the door, dairy attendant Bawa Sing said.

“It was just out of desperation.”

The First & Last dairy, is locat-

ed on Archibald Street and has been the scene of several minor incidents over the years, as well as an aggravated robbery in April, and one in 2012.

Although the latest incident was relatively minor, Sing said it struck him as unusual.

“I guess nobody expected someone of that age to do something like that,” he said.

He hoped that the woman would be encouraged to return and pay for her packet of cigarettes.

He planned to mention the theft to police.

One witness, who only wanted to be known as Naomi, said the police car was travelling at speed up York Place about 8.30am, without siren or flashing lights, when it collided with a small Mazda Demio travelling in the opposite direction.

“As he was coming up the hill, he was all floppy in the vehicle.

The car was going quite fast.”

The Mazda then collided with a parked Ford Focus, trapping a woman in between the two cars.

She said the woman appeared to be headed into the York Place

Preschool and Nursery when she was pinned.

The police car continued on, knocking over a lamp post before colliding with an Otago Road Services school bus, she said.

“I was out walking. It was almost me getting hit. I had to jump out of the way or get hit too.

“I was thinking oh my God.” Once the police car came to a stop, she reached in through the passenger door and tapped the officer on the shoulder.

“He was not responding. He was unconscious. I tapped him and he woke up and he didn’t know what happened.”

Otago Coastal Area Commander Inspector Matenga Gray said initial information suggested the police officer “possibly suffered a medical event”.

New street lights all-round winner

By the end of this year Ashburton’s streets will look a little different after dark.

Gone will be the old highpressure sodium lights that have bathed the town’s night time streets in an orange glow and in their place will be around 2500 softer LED lights that will shed a brighter, but softer, white light.

LED lights are winners on several fronts – needing less maintenance, having a longer life, more energy efficient and giving better after dark visibility, said Ashburton District Council roading man-

ager Brian Fauth. The council decided to make the change last year after the New Zealand Transport Agency offered to subsidise installation costs by 85 per cent.

The first 1000 lights are about to be delivered and these will then be installed by EA Networks. The remaining 1500 are due shortly and that should put the project on target for completion by December 31, Fauth said.

The new lights should see an end to the perennial problem of streets where bulbs have blown, as their life span is anticipated to be 20 years. Any issues within 10 years of installation are covered

by warranty, he said.

The lights come in one, two and three panel versions and range in price from $228 to $600 plus each.

Anecdotally, as well as providing much better night-time visibility, the quality of light shed by LED bulbs is said to create a feeling of wellbeing for people, Fauth said.

Street lights along Alford Forest Road (SH 77) have already been replaced with LED bulbs.

The cost to supply and install the lights is approximately $1.5 million with an estimated saving of $130,000 per year in operations and maintenance.

Fight for Tim’s KiwiSaver heads to Parliament

A mother and son seeking access to his KiwiSaver funds before his likely premature death took their fight to Parliament yesterday.

Joan and Tim Fairhall made a submission to a select committee considering changes to tax law.

Joan Fairhall, is trying to get KiwiSaver laws changed that are preventing Tim from accessing his money before the age of 65.

Tim has Down Syndrome which will lower his life expectancy, and he may not live until he is 65.

“I won’t live as long as most people. It doesn’t matter how long you live as long as you make the most of your life. I have done lots of cool things in my life so far and I want to do more,” Tim told MPs on the finance and expenditure committee.

He has $8000 in his KiwiSaver account from his supermarket job of 15 years and dreams of visiting his brother and best friends who live overseas.

Joan Fairhall enrolled him in KiwiSaver 10 years ago, thinking

she was helping him save for his retirement, which she says would be in his 40s.

“This is Tim’s money, he earned it, he saved it. He saved it with a particular goal in mind. It’s important that he has a goal to look forward to. Tim is very hung up on that,” she said.

KiwiSaver has a number of optout clauses but Tim doesn’t meet any of them. His KiwiSaver provider’s hands are also tied, bound by legislation which Joan Fairhall says needs to be changed.

“I want you to consider whether the current legislation is unfair and indeed discriminatory, whether it kidnaps and holds on to and uses the savings of people in this category but there is just no mechanism for them to get it out and use it fairly for themselves,” she told the select committee.

Committee member National MP David Carter said the pair had made a compelling case and the committee would talk to offi-

cials to see if a solution could be found.

“Rest assured, we’ve got your message loud and clear,” he said.

The Fairhalls also met Commerce Minister Kris Faafoi yesterday after earlier writing to him about their case.

Faafoi told reporters later it was possible legislation could be changed when Retirement Commissioner Diane Maxwell carried out a three-yearly review of retirement income policies next year.

“I think if you look at Tim and his mother and the case they made at the select committee today, it’s not ideal for them.

“I think you’ve got to feel for them but at the moment the legislation doesn’t allow enough flexibility for him to get that money.”

Blair Vernon, managing director of AMP which is Tim’s provider, earlier said there needed to be a mechanism for recourse in some situations that could be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Huge storm bears down Coastal residents fleeing a potentially devastating blow from Hurricane Florence encountered empty gasoline pumps and depleted store shelves as the monster storm neared the Carolina coast with 225km/h winds and drenching rain that could last for days.

While some said they planned to stay put despite hurricane watches and warnings that include the homes of more than 5.4 million people on the East Coast, many weren’t taking any chances.

Newspaper reprints controversial cartoon A controversial cartoon of Serena Williams that has been widely condemned as a racist depiction of the tennis great has been partially reprinted on the front page of the Melbourne-based newspaper that initially published it.

The Herald Sun newspaper printed an edited portion of the cartoon – featuring 23-time Grand Slam winner Williams jumping on a broken racket during her dispute with a chair umpire in the US Open final – among caricatures of other famous people Wednesday under the headline Welcome to the PC World.

The newspaper has defended its cartoonist Michael Knight’s depiction of Williams and is asserting the condemnation, which has come from all parts of the world, is driven by political correctness.

“If the self-appointed censors of Mark Knight get their way on his Serena Williams cartoon, our new politically correct life will be very dull indeed,” the paper printed on its front page.

ments, mostly critical.

During the final against Osaka, Williams got a warning from the chair umpire for violating a rarely enforced rule against receiving coaching from the sidelines. An indignant Williams emphatically defended herself, denying she had cheated.

A short time later, she smashed her racket in frustration and was docked a point.

She protested and demanded an apology from the umpire, who penalised her a game.

Critics of Knight’s cartoon described it as a clear exam-

ple of a stereotype facing black women, depicting Williams as an irate, hulking, big-mouthed black woman jumping up and down on a broken racket. The umpire was shown telling a blond, slender woman – meant to be Osaka, who is Japanese and Haitian – “Can you just let her win?”

“I was deeply offended. This is not a joke,” said Vanessa K. De Luca, former editor in chief of Essence magazine, who wrote a column about the US Open furor.

The cartoonist “completely missed the point of why she was upset,” De Luca told The Associated Press. “It was about her integrity, and anybody who doesn’t get that is perpetuating the erasure that so many black women feel when they are trying to speak up for themselves.

It’s like our opinions don’t matter.”

In a social media post, Peter Blunden, managing director of News Corp’s operations in the state of Victoria, said: “Australia’s finest cartoonist Mark Knight has the strongest support of his colleagues for his depiction of Serena Williams’ petulance. It’s about bad behavior, certainly not race. The PC brigade are way off the mark ... again.”

Lack of rice sets Crowe off Russell Crowe reportedly “stormed off set” after discovering catering had run out of rice. According to the DailyMail, the Kiwi star was on set filming The True History of the Kelly Gang about three weeks ago in Australia. A source told the publication that crew members were alerted to Crowe’s mood following the incident.

“Lots of the crew got text messages warning them about what happened,” the source said. “They were told Russell was really angry because there was no more rice.” The True History of the Kelly Gang also stars Charlie Hunnam, Nicholas Hoult and George Mackay.

Being prepared for the next big one T

hat wee tremor that shook the Canterbury plains yesterday afternoon – you know, the one you most probably didn’t feel.

Although slight in its nature, the grumblings should serve as a stark reminder to everyone that, although well down the track from a series of ground-shakings that changed the face of the Canterbury region, we are not forgotten

by Mother Nature.

It usually takes a wee shake like that which ran across Canterbury yesterday to remind us all just how earthquakes feel.

You remember those feelings of uncertainty – those few moments where you come to a standstill

and ride the early wave to judge the size of what’s unfolding before taking your next step. There’s that uncertainty of when the shaking might end and the ever-present mode of panic as you try and remember where your best safety point is, just in case things don’t stop moving.

Yesterday’s rumble may have paled in significance to what

many of us have experienced, but it’s still a reminder all the same.

A reminder that at any point on any given day, Mother Nature could unleash her fury upon us once more and as those who live and breathe the science of earthquakes and what causes their interruption on our lives are wont to tell us, it appears the stark reality of another striking is, ultimately, just around the corner.

Whether it might be here in Canterbury or further afield in New Zealand, earthquakes should become even more of a common occurrence if we are to be led to believe the recent spike in them around the world is telling us something.

Our biggest fear should be, and always will be, a rupturing of the Alpine Fault.

It’s been 301 years since it last ruptured and every year that passes is another year closer to it happening again.

Reading through the findings of research from a varying number of people and organisations, its damage will be hugely significant and leave an ever-lasting mark on our beautiful landscape.

And all we can do really is try and be prepared, and be prepared for the worst-case scenario.

After years of listening to how important it is to have a survival kit readily available should disaster strike, the story line might be

getting a bit old, but having those basic necessities, which could ultimately mean the difference when it comes to survival, are hugely vital.

Having a box or two stashed away with non-perishable items that you might need is a really strong idea.

It doesn’t need to have much, just water, some tinned food and other basics like torches, candles and batteries, which could all become a major part of life if things did go horribly wrong.

Check out the report on page 2 today, it is sure to be an awakening experience for many Mid Cantabrians, at just how devastating things could be.

ancy the idea of a little holiday place to call your own somewhere nice in 2018?

Be prepared for the old bank account to take a solid thrashing.

If you don’t have a six figure sum at your disposal, forget it!

If you want somewhere considered desirable then that figure had better have a 2, 3, 4 or more at the front of it.

And that’s just for a site.

But it wasn’t always that way.

Back in the early sixties when New Zealand was closed at the weekends, life was simple and everyone went to church on Sunday because it seemed the right thing to do, if you had a dream and then some drive, you could make almost anything happen.

Knowing the right people helped too.

After the kind offer for our family to utilise one of the Crum family’s baches or huts at Rangitata (definitely not a crib – that would be Southland territory), my dad became enthused with the idea of having one for our own family.

Others keen on the idea pointed out sites around the camp that were available and pretty quickly my father settled on one he thought would fit the bill.

Back then the sites were leasehold and, as I recall, the leases were very generous. I think peppercorn would probably be a fair description.

But what about the bach?

a building being sold-off by the Ashburton County Council from its yard down in South Street.

Disposal was by means of a tender, so after inspecting it, dad wrote out his offer and asked the lady in the office at work whether she’d mind typing it up for him.

Shock number one. “SIXTY POUNDS??” she exclaimed incredulously.

“Surely you mean Six hundred pounds?”

“No, sixty pounds,” replied the old man, who has never been famous for paying too much for anything! As is often found in the DNA of those who grew up through the Great Depression.

“You’ll never get it for that!” responded Mrs Office Lady, who dutifully carried out his request.

Shock number two: tender successful!

Quickly followed by shock number three! What now?

Well, the support crew swung into gear and before long offers and advice came thick and fast from his supporting mates and contacts.

The building, as it sat, was too

large for transport, so one of my earliest childhood memories was accompanying dad down to working bees at the yard where he began to section the structure into two pieces. My job, apparently, was to consume all the morning tea immediately upon arrival!

Work progressed and duly the day arrived for the building to be lifted onto a transporter and taken down to the Rangitata Huts to its new site.

I was at school that day so not privy to the excitement, but in the event the job was completed and the hut settled on the original piles at its new location by lunchtime.

Our holidays for years were spent down at the beach in that bach.

Dad was not a fisherman, but his relaxation was improving our second home.

At first there was no toilet, no plumbed water (a hand pump outside for everything), and no septic tank.

Bathing was done by everyone in a tin baby bath with water heated in the electric jug. Yes, there was at least power.

Over the years, things vastly improved with an addition built-on the front from cheap or free salvaged materials, French doors, a proper toilet and bathroom, all the bells and whistles.

It evolved from nothing much, to something quite comfortable.

A real holiday retreat.

Then, at some point down the track an opportunity developed to freehold the site.

An asset built of determination, hard slog, sweat equity, all from very meagre beginnings.

There were numerous side escapades. Like the reasonably drawn-out process to find a boat. That never did quite come to fruition. Obviously didn’t pass due-diligence. A bit like the dog.

The old man spent many years off to see a man about a dog on Saturday evenings at the MSA. Such a protracted process but never did quite come off. He did put a lot of effort into it though!

Among the dramas, I recall one mission down to Rangi to pour a concrete terrace.

It all went reasonably well until on the way home, spit, spit, spit – the skies opened up!

“Bugger!” exclaimed the old man.

When we went back later to review the damage, we were left with a lovely exposed aggregate effect.

Years ahead of that becoming fashionable.

You pay extra for that these days.

Check history when buying cattle

Ministry officers are rejecting advice that farmers should avoid buying Canterbury cattle to reduce the risk of catching mycoplasma bovis.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) said farmers should not worry about which area they bought cattle from and would be better to concentrate on the health history of animals.

This was after Dargaville Vets manager Brian Lowe told NZ Herald that truck and trailer loads of cattle were being brought from Canterbury to sell in Northland, because they were cheap to buy.

He said this should not be allowed as Canterbury had the largest number of infections for a region in the country.

The first confirmed case of M. bovis found in Northland last week was revealed to be a beef property with the disease coming from young cattle originating from Canterbury after arriving via Waikato.

MPI said it was more important that farmers were satisfied about the health history and origin farm when deciding whether to buy cattle, rather than worrying about the region where they were born or raised.

An Ashburton company that makes speciality oils is vying with deer milk powder, giant salmon and cultured vegan butter as finalists for the New Zealand Food Awards.

Midlands Nutritional Oils rapeseed oil is a finalist for the artisan award, one of 11 categories, and Barker’s of Geraldine also has two products in the category.

Midlands Nutritional Oils supplies speciality oils to food, skincare and health markets throughout the world.

Deer milk powder by state-owned farming company Landcorp, which uses the brand name Pamu, is a dual finalist in the primary sector award and the novel food and beverage award categories.

Deer milk is new to grocery shelves, as is Ora King Tyee salmon from New Zealand King Salmon, and cultured vegan butter from Savour.

He said every farmer in the country needed to do their due diligence when buying stock and that included checking the property where animals were born in Animal Status Declaration (ASD) forms.

“The reason stock go up there [Northland] is because there is a shortage. It’s not a matter of stopping this, but doing your due diligence to do everything you can to check the health of the animals you are buying.’’

ASD forms provide buyers with information including animal history and their birth of origin, feeding and vaccination details and their bovine tuberculosis status.

MPI said farmers affected by the outbreak were going through a difficult time and should reach out to their support networks.

By last Friday 67 properties had been confirmed infected with 30 of them since cleared. Canterbury has 18 actively infected farms from its 33 confirmed properties.

So far $19.5m has been paid out in compensation for farmers with 120 of 316 claims either completed or part payments made. About 37,500 cattle have been culled as part of the response to eradicate M. bovis.

“Deer milk is mainly used in luxury desserts; however some chefs are pushing boundaries by creating savoury dishes.

Feedback has been uniformly positive.

We’d love to see deer milk as a permanent fixture on the New Zealand culinary scene as a testament to how Kiwi chefs can lead the world in culinary innovation,” he said.

The deer milk won an innovation award at Fieldays. After its launch earlier this year with chef tasting in Auckland, deer milk appeared on the menu in top Auckland and Wellington restaurants such as Logan Brown, Charlie Noble and Chameleon.

Deer milk is being launched to selected Australian chefs in Sydney and Melbourne this month.

Massey University vice-chancellor Professor Jan Thomas said the awards provided local producers with the opportunity to elevate their business on a global scale.

On the judging panel are Ray McVinnie, Geoff Scott, Nici Wickes and Josh Scott.

Wickes said the common theme among the finalists was innovation and they had added value to New Zealand products.

High hopes for hills lambing season

Mid Canterbury farmers setstocking their ewes on foothill farms are looking forward to a good lambing.

Foothill flocks are in tidy condition and have access to plenty of feed leading into the lamb drop.

Mt Somers Station farmer David Acland said most foothill farmers would be pleased with the season so far for lambing after a mild winter.

“Everyone I have spoken to has said ewes are in good nick, the cover is in good shape and set stocking is pretty good,’’ said Acland, who is the Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury Meat & Wool chairman.

“The ewes are in good condition scores and most people had a pretty good scanning.’’

Acland said his hoggets were

well grown from last season.

“We were at 167 per cent [scanning] for the flock excluding the hoggets and that’s the twotooths and mixed-age ewes and not counting the triplets. That’s near normal as we were 170-171 per cent last season so it’s down a wee bit, but not by a lot and the ewes are in good nick.’’

He said the minor drop in scanning results reflected slightly lighter ewes coming into weaning last year.

Other farmers were at near normal levels.

“The key is having good condition ewes coming into spring and settled weather,’’ said Acland.

“The weather patterns don’t seem too bad.’’

However, farmers always keep a weather eye for a late September or early October snow storm which can spoil lambing.

“There is some talk we are

heading into an El Nino and we should be right as long as it’s not a drought,’’ said Acland.

“Last year in November and December we didn’t have rain for six weeks. That’s great for sitting around a pool, but that’s our grass growing period and we don’t really want that so a stable summer would be great.”

Further in, back country lambing will start in early to mid-October.

Most of Mid Canterbury’s lambing had retreated to the hills. Farmers driving from Mt Somers to Ashburton would be lucky to pass more than two true sheep farms of the classical mixed livestock properties that used to be found in the region.

Lamb contracts at about $8 a kilogram have some farmers nervous of a price correction if they reach their ceiling for shoppers.

A Southland farm’s Kiwi as animal transporter has warmed the hearts of New Zealanders after an image of the Lambulance was posted online.

Wrey’s Bush farmer Bradley Stewart came up with the crafty idea to turn one of his vehicles into an ambulance for animals a couple of years ago as a way to transport animals around the paddock.

Anna McFarlane, who works on the farm, said the idea was a fun way to transport any animals in need of extra care and allows the farmers to give the lambs the best care possible.

“If a mother can’t feed all her lambs we use the Lambulance to pick up the ones that miss out and take them home and feed them ourselves.

“If the mother doesn’t want to or the lambs are sick we pop then in the wee boxes and take them home so we can provide extra care before transporting them back to the paddocks.”

Currently, the farm at Wrey’s Bush has 40 pet lambs, with many taking a shine to the Lambulance.

McFarlane says the lambs are happy to be picked up in the Lambulance and they often travel in pairs.

“The lambs love it. You put them in there and they warm up in the wee box. Sometimes a few will travel in the Lambulance and they enjoy the warmth being together. We have straw in there to keep them happy.”

Farmers concerned over stock shootings The latest livestock killings on the Taieri have local farmers “scared stiff”, as those responsible for mass stock shootings earlier this year remain at large.

One farmer said Tuesday that he was worried about the mental state of those who had shot 10 of his sheep earlier this year, leaving them for dead in his back paddock.

Earlier this week, in East Taieri, three more lambs were shot in the head and killed, nine months after a spate of similar incidents at farms in the region.

Nine lambs, a ewe, two cattle beasts, a cow and a bull were shot, but no meat was gathered from the animals.

The sheep belonged to Kuri Bush farmer Peter McLeod, who said he was still wary of running stock near the back paddocks where the ewe and lambs were killed.

“The whole block up there, I’m

a bit nervous about.”

But the 50-year-old remained resolute and unwilling to be intimidated.

McLeod said his father had farmed in the same area south of Brighton, and had also lost stock to rustling and shooting decades ago.

However, poachers back then would have harvested meat from the animals, he said.

“All that was left was heads and hocks.”

He questioned what this year’s shooters were capable of in the future, given they had seemingly shot his stock for entertainment.

“The question is, what’s next?”

Several of the farmers who lost stock, and many in the local farming community, have criticised police for a lack of progress on the investigation and poor communication.

Mosgiel police said the investigation was ongoing.

‘People being priced out of market’ Finance Minister Grant Robertson says he is concerned that some Kiwis are being priced out of the home insurance market.

Speaking at an industry event last week Robertson said living in Wellington he had seen the effect of recent changes by insurers to price an area based on its risks to natural disasters like earthquakes and floods.

In April, Tower announced it would stop cross-subsidising and begin charging people more to insure houses in earthquake-prone areas like Wellington.

That was followed in July by IAG, which owns the State Insurance and AMI brands, also raising premiums for disaster-prone areas.

Robertson said what was happening to the insurance costs for people in Wellington was concerning.

“We are seeing people being well and truly priced out of insurance around risk ratings, approaches that are going to provide big challenges to earthquake-prone areas ... and that concerns me.”

He also pointed to rising costs of insurance in south Dunedin, where he grew up, due to flood

Accountant accused of $1m fraud A former chartered accountant has been charged with defrauding clients of around $1 million.

The Serious Fraud Office alleges that Christopher George Wright filed tax returns on behalf of 245 clients and misappropriated refunds to the tune of about $1.01 million over a six-year period from January 2010 to April 2016.

Wright, 62, entered no plea yesterday when he appeared in the

Auckland District Court.

He is facing a single representative charge of theft by a person in special relationship.

Wright has been remanded on bail to reappear at the Auckland District Court on 4 October.

In December 2016, Wright pleaded guilty by correspondence to professional misconduct as well as a charge for negligence or incompetence in a case before the

New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants disciplinary tribunal after admitting taking client money for eight years.

The tribunal found he had conducted in the misappropriation of at least $280,000 over approximately 18 months.

At the time, Wright was removed from the institute’s register, and ordered to pay costs of $56,853.

Parnell penthouse nets record $9.25m The record for the most expensive apartment sold in New Zealand has been shattered following an eye-watering $9.25m sale of a yetto-be-built Parnell penthouse.

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) confirmed to the Herald that the recently sold Churton St pad was a record price for a New Zealand apartment, eclipsing the previous benchmark sale in Remuera of $8.7m in 2017.

“Recent sales at the Edition apartment complex in Parnell of $9.25m and $8.5m are record prices for Auckland apartments,” REINZ chief executive Bindi Norwell said.

The complex was quipped to be a “bold, contemporary, confident piece of architecture” nestled in the heart of Parnell.

LEP Construction group manager Russell Thompson said the two top-floor apartments had sold for $9.25m and $8.5m, meaning the development had reached its intended investment threshold with completion expected in March 2021.

Ashburton Golf Club We have now arrived at the semi-final stage for this year’s club champs, and some cracking games look in store. In the junior B George Brown will take on Peter Bain and Pat Turton will meet Wilson Hii, two very even games, all of them are capable of shooting low scores, let’s see who brings it on the day.

Junior A sees two very different ties, with the young bucks of Matt Tait and Ryan Stoddart locking horns and two mature gents Dave Hewitt and Phil Kerr squaring off. Whoever gets through it will be a very intriguing final.

Intermediate has young Dylan Stoddart playing the form horse Tim Newton, and Chris Lovelock battling Chris Ralston, I’m sure Chris will win that game. Then finally in the Seniors Blair Franklin is up against Robbie Bell, and Jordan Green will take on Mr Consistent Peter Walker. Last year’s finalists Robbie and Jordan will be looking to return to the big game, but I’m sure Blair and Peter will fancy their chances of putting a new name on the honours board.

We also have the plate semi finals with Shane against Ken, Perry and Ron, Knocker and young master Clarke, Gaby and Sooty, Lefty and Jeff and Spud against his bunny.

I think we have to mention a certain golfer, who finished the qualifying as the top ranked in his grade and rightly picked up the number one seed ranking. He then proceeded to get a thrashing by the number 16 seed in the first round, which put him into the plate. So all bets were off, as the number 1 seed would surely cruise through the plate, but alas another thrashing occurred in the first round again.

I can’t remember in all my years at the club, if this has ever happened before, so quite an honour. Well done Jordy!

Ashburton Writers’ Group Vice President Stacey welcomed members to the September meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group held recently.

The Ashburton Writers’ Group winning story by Freya Jemmett “Kate Sheppard’s Dream for the 21st Century” will be read.

There was discussion on the format of the presentation to the Ashburton Rotary Club at their meeting on Tuesday September 11.

The assignment for the meeting was “Fake News”.

Members wrote of Extra Chins, University Library, Artificial Flavouring, Man Gone Down and Pet Parlour.

The instant exercise was given by Stacey, and members had to fill in words which made up a funny story.

The meeting concluded at 2.45pm with the serving of afternoon tea and an exercise on apostrophes.

The October assignment is “Caught Red Handed”.

A monster raffle ensured everyone went home with at least one gift – and then a feast of afternoon tea treats was enjoyed before everyone departed for home. Altogether this was a very enjoyable afternoon, both for guests and WI members alike.

Last Sunday thirteen members headed up to the Ellesmere to compete for two trophies against Kaiapoi and Rangoira. The course was in great condition which made for some good scores. Rangiora took the triangular trophy while Ashburton MSA beat Kaiapoi 306 to 256 to bring some silverware back to the trophy cabinet.

Top scores for the day were in the mens Gary Stratford nett 63 followed by Steve Thomas on 69. In the ladies Kay Fox had a nett 76 followed closely by Marilyn Bennett on 78. Closet to the pin prizes went to Brent Smith and Steve Stratford. Big congratulations to Wayne on reaching the big 60 a good reason not to get out of bed on Sunday to play golf or else he may have been a bit sore from breaking out all his dance moves the previous night. A small excursion to the Crate and Barrel at Leeston for a couple of drinks capped off a great day. Our next game is at Waimak Gorge on October 14.

Wakanui WI Fifteen members of the Wakanui WI were welcomed to the August meeting by President Jenette.

Motto for the month was – “A good life is when you smile often, dream big, laugh a lot and realise how blessed you are for what you have got.”

A display by members of recipe books proved interesting with some very old treasures of yesteryear along with more recent examples. An exchange of member’s favourite recipes also proved popular.

Details were discussed for the 125 years of Suffrage walk on September 19 and members urged to attend. The Mid-Canterbury Federation of WI is to plant three white camellias in the Domain to mark the event.

It was decided to enter both the Bay and Tray competitions in the Ashburton A & P Show.

Arrangements were made for members to supply lunch at the Federation ½ Yearly Meeting in the Wakanui Hall on 2nd October.

As no speaker had been arranged for the afternoon President Jenette arranged two games to entertain members.

A selection of cooking ingredients to identify by sight and smell only proved more challenging than expected and naming streets in Ashburton also proved a challenge. Both games were enjoyed by members.

Next meeting September 26 at the Sinclair Centre.

Run and Walk Ashburton Our Tuesday evening sprint group opted for keeping their feet dry this week and instead enjoyed a couple of times round the perimeter of the domain.

Wednesday evening walkers had their first week of two time slots to choose from, 5.30pm or 6pm. A total of nine attended overall and all enjoyed striding out their usual town route. Members are enjoying the evenings drawing out, certainly helps keep motivation levels raised.

The early birds on Saturday morning had a group of four head out at 6.15am for some extra time on their feet before meeting up with a further 6 runners and three walkers for the 7.30am start from

Frontrunner. Time and distances varied amongst the group with up to 10km approximately covered. The morning rounded off with morning coffee at Columbus Café which was welcomed after a chilly start.

A group of five travelled over to Banks Peninsula on Saturday morning to take part in the Governors Bay to Lyttleton 10km Road Race.

A handicap race where your start time is based on your estimated finish time, with starters leaving in different waves. All members ran a strong race.

The Lions Club of Ashburton The August meeting presided over by President Lance Schubert saw a good attendance for our partners night at the Hotel Ashburton.

Our first guest speaker was Hannah McDougall who reported favourably on her Lions sponsored time at Outward Bound.

Jo Hathaway (pictured right), our second speaker, gave a great insight into her work in Nepal as a palliative care nurse. Her care was specifically for a Buddhist monk of high ranking.

Top title for sharpshooters Three Ashburton College girls have combined to take out the New Zealand secondary schools’ shooting championship.

The team of Shania HarrisonLee, Emma Smith and Lanelle McArthur – all Coronation Target Shooting Club members – took part in the postal shoot, which involved shooting and sending away four rounds of targets, along with other schools and individuals from around the country.

Each result counted towards a team’s final score, but they also went on to an individual leaderboard as well as a graded result.

Harrison-Lee came out on top as the top overall individual and won the B grade championship, with Smith third. McArthur was the master grade champion and was also third overall.

Ashburton’s Phoenix Target Shooting Club was also represented in the competition, with Ben Thomas placing ninth in the D grade and Sam Smith 12th.

The Ashburton College trio of Harrison-Lee, Smith and McArthur will now be looking to back

Tom Wright has decided to quit NRL club Manly and return to rugby union, signing a two-year deal with the Brumbies. The 21-year-old was a promising schoolboy rugby union player and was on target for the Rio Olympics sevens team. But his electric pace caught the eye of nine NRL clubs and he elected to knock back a lucrative Rugby Australia sevens contract and join the Sea Eagles in 2015, as their long-term replacement for Kieran Foran. He made his NRL debut in 2018, scoring one try in his four appearances, but with his contract ending he has chosen to return to his first love. “Tom has genuine X-factor in attack with ability to create something out of nothing,” Brumbies coach Dan McKellar said.

World’s best golfer reflects on rise Justin Rose would like to have changed how he reached No.1 in the world.

But not when.

Rose felt conflicted when the BMW Championship ended in light rain at Aronimink Golf Club – runner-up to Keegan Bradley after a play-off.

The consolation prize was replacing Dustin Johnson at the top of the world rankings to be just the 22nd golfer to achieve the feat.

“In the moment, we’re all about trying to win a golf tournament,” Rose said.

“But give me half an hour maybe, and I might be able to say I really enjoyed it.”

Reflection came much sooner.

“We did it Dad.... World Number 1. Thank you so much to my family, friends & everybody that has helped me achieve this incredible goal,” Rose posted on Twitter.

The words were accompanied by a photo of Rose from Sunday afternoon at Merion Golf Club in 2013 when he hit all the right shots and became a major champion.

He is shown pointing to the sky to acknowledge his father, Ken, who died of leukaemia in September 2002.

The day Rose became No.1 in the world was the anniversary of his death, a day the son never forgets.

His ranking was earned over the past two years by a mathematical formula, and over the past 20 years by sheer determination.

Amy Satterthwaite will lead New Zealand against Australia in their women’s T20 series this month after long-time skipper Suzie Bates stood down from the captaincy.

Bates has relinquished the role after six years in charge, allowing Satterthwaite to take the reins for the three-match series starting in Sydney on September 29.

Regarded as one of the world’s premier cricketers, 30-year-old Bates said she’d reached a point where it was beneficial for the White Ferns if she concentrated on her own game. She said Satterthwaite, also a world class batter, was a capable leader and would have her full backing.

Major team honours have eluded New Zealand under Bates’ tenure despite their relatively high world ranking.

Ramos to return Carlos Ramos will return to the umpire’s chair for this weekend’s Davis Cup clash between Croatia and the US. The experienced Portuguese official has found himself at the centre of a storm after his officiating of the US Open final, which saw Serena Williams accuse him of sexism after she was docked a game for receiving three code violations. After Ramos had to be escorted off court, Williams used her post-match press conference to suggest that men avoid such punishment for similar on-court behaviour. Ramos was supported – albeit belatedly – by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), who said he acted with “professionalism and integrity”.

Star ruptures ACL Silver Ferns defender Temalisi Fakahokotau has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2018 Silver Ferns season after she ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee during training. Fakahokotau was highly likely to be the first choice goal keep for the Ferns, being one of the few players to come out of the disastrous Commonwealth Games campaign with her reputation enhanced.

The defender also shone during the ANZ Premiership season with the Mainland Tactix, leading the competition in intercepts, deflections and rebounding.

Salmon Run spots filling fast

A new event will provide an added challenge for competitors in this year’s Salmon Run multisport event at Rakaia.

Organisers have added a 22km mountain bike course to the schedule, taking the total number of races to be contested in the October 13 event to seven.

The 2018 instalment of the Salmon Run will be its fourth and the seven events cater to all fitness levels, spokesperson Jo Burrows said.

Raced around the iconic Rakaia River, the riverbed and

its surrounding countryside, the Rakaia Lions Jackson Holmes Salmon Run is a non-profit event with all money raised going back into the community, Burrows said.

The Salmon Run consists of a multisport course, which is a 36km cycle, a 14km kayak and an 11.5km run, as well as a 21km half marathon run, and a long run/walk over 14.2km and a short run/walk over 6km.

There’s also duathlon options, with a long duathlon seeing competitors cycle 25km and then run 6km and a short duathlon taking competitors 25km on

the bike and 6km on foot.

People can enter as individuals or teams and as competitive or non-competitive.

All events start and finish at the Rakaia Domain at staggered times for ease of transition and to help support crews.

Burrows said entries are being closely monitored with a safety number in mind and when entries hit those numbers they will be closed off.

“Our multisport event is very popular and used for people practising for the Coast to Coast and entries for this event are flying in,” Burrows said.

She said the new event – the 22km bike ride in the Rakaia Riverbed – will take place along a new track just being developed, and it will be suitable for beginners to advanced riders, with families also in mind.

The duathlon and run/walk events are designed for people who want to have a serious go, or those who want to tick off a bucket list item, Burrows said.

The Rakaia Salmon Run will be held on Saturday, October 13 and for more information – or to enter – people can go online to the event’s official website www. thesalmonrun.nz.

Cloud over SBW’s return for All Blacks The All Blacks’ policy around not training is under the microscope after Sonny Bill Williams went down with illness ahead of their test against the Springboks.

New Zealand are desperate to get first-choice inside centre Williams on the park in what has been a season dogged by injury.

He looked set to return for Saturday’s Rugby Championship test in Wellington after scans showed he had overcome a 10week shoulder injury.

However, he missed Tuesday’s practice session with an ailment and is in doubt to be included in what should be close to New

Zealand’s strongest team for their final home test of the year.

The All Blacks have previously said their strong preference is for players to train all week if they are to be considered for match duty.

Williams’ last game was the third test against France on June 23 – his only international appearance of 2018.

The 33-year-old’s availability this week would be timely as Ngani Laumape is ruled out with knee damage suffered in Saturday’s 46-24 win over Argentina in Nelson.

The All Blacks want to restore

their preferred midfield combination of Williams and Ryan Crotty, who has been out for a month following a head knock.

Star winger Rieko Ioane’s hamstring is healed and is likely to return, along with match-winning five-eighth Beauden Barrett.

Sam Cane and Liam Squire should be restored as flankers despite some muscular efforts from fringe candidates Ardie Savea and Shannon Frizell against the Pumas.

The tight five may be the only area below full strength for the world champions.

World class hooker Dane Coles is near the end of a nine-month recovery from a knee injury.

Former Black Fern Rebecca Mahoney is set to become the first New Zealand female referee to officiate a first class men’s fixture.

Mahoney will be in control of the Heartland Championship match between Thames Valley and King Country on Saturday. McGrath hails bowler Australia great Glenn McGrath says he has great respect for James Anderson after the Englishman replaced him as the most prolific pace bowler in Test cricket.

Anderson bowled Mohammed Shami to seal victory over India in the fifth Test at the Oval on Tuesday and claimed his 564th Test wicket in his 143rd match to move ahead of McGrath. “I was proud to hold it for as long as I did – for it to be beaten by somebody like Jimmy Anderson is great,” McGrath, whose haul of 563 came from 124 matches, told BBC Radio 5 live. Cup fresh-up for Tyler duo Riverton trainer Kelvin Tyler will bookend today’s PGG Wrightson Real Estate South Otago Cup (1400m) field at Wingatui with What’s Up Alf and Timy Tyler, and he thinks both horses will be competitive fresh-up.

Road to Rock seven-year-old What’s Up Alf, who has drawn the ace barrier, has been in good form over winter, securing a handful of placings and adding victory in the Gold Club Premier (1800m) at Riccarton last month to his five win career haul.

What’s Up Alf was tipped out for a freshen-up after his laststart runner-up performance over 2000m at Riccarton last month and Tyler has set a course for next month’s Winton Cup (2000m) with the gelding.

“He’s been going really well.

He’s had a bit of a freshen-up since Riccarton so comes back in distance,” Tyler said. “He’s just having a bit of a run really to see where he is at.

“He had 10 days off after his last run and he’s freshened up quite nicely. He normally goes reasonably well fresh and he comes in well at the weights (54kg), so I’m

“I didn’t think he went a bad race in the Winter Cup,” Tyler said. “Just a few things went against him there and I probably should have stepped him up over 1800m in his last start, but I put him back to 1400m. He’s freshened up nice and I can’t fault his work.”

The Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained colt, undefeated in two career starts to date, could instead be kept for the Gr.1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in November if his connections believe he is better suited to the sprint distance.

“I’d think a lot of people would have thought we’d run him in the Danehill (Stakes) over 1200m but we want to see if he runs 1400m because that shapes the rest of our spring and it shapes the autumn,” Wayne Hawkes told Racing.com.

“After the races on Saturday, knowing whether he runs the 1400m or not is going to count.”

Ageless warrior set for mile Awapuni trainer Lisa Latta is hoping it’s a case of third time lucky when her Group One galloper Authentic Paddy tackles Saturday’s Gr.3 Boehringer Ingelheim 1550m on his home track.

The veteran galloper has contested the Metric Mile feature twice previously, finishing second in both 2015 and last year.

“He generally goes well at Awapuni,” Latta said. “He has run second in the Metric Mile in two of the last three years and it looks like he is going to get in not too badly at the weights.”

The ageless nine-year-old pleased Latta with his fresh-up third placing in the Gr.2 Lisa Chittick Foxbridge Plate, before a torrid run in the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) resulted in a fading 13th.

“His first-up run was really good, and I wasn’t too disappointed with the performance at Hawke’s Bay,” Latta said. “No horse could have carried on from that.

“He drew wide and he got caught wide and the effort told.

He went the way any horse would with a run like that.

“At this stage we will probably back-up in the Open 2000m event at Hastings on the middle day of the spring carnival. That is what we did last year and then into the Livamol.”

Authentic Paddy is the winner of 11 races from 85 starts, with a further 33 placings.

Veteran galloper Authentic Paddy will contest Saturday’s Gr.3 Boehringer Ingelheim 1550m at Awapuni.

“He’s at an age where you can’t give him too much of a let-up,” Latta said. “He just gets away on you. He certainly takes some work.”

Latta said Manhattan Street was likely to represent the stable in the Rating 82 Benchmark 1200m on Saturday.

ganui last weekend but needs rain-softened going to show his best.

“He needs those loose, wet tracks and it can be hard to find those tracks sometimes.

“The weather has been very good, and I can see it coming well back from the Heavy 10.

“I’ve got a nice team. Just the weather has held us up a bit, like everyone else.”

“She had a couple of days in the paddock and then we had her back trying to get ready for a race.

Then we had offers coming in

“We have a plan to get her to the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, maybe the Sarten and then the 1000 Guineas. So, I’ll just have to do what’s best for the horse and our owners.”

Flying Sardine impresses in oddity The Kelvin Tyler-trained Flying Sardine impressed with her fresh-up win in the Christchurch Casino Open Handicap (1600m) at Riccarton on Saturday, in what was an oddly run race.

Early speed split the six-horse field into two pods of three for the majority of the race. Flying Sardine sat on the back of the first group and got the better of her rivals in the straight, winning by a length over Who Dares Wins.

“It was quite unusual,” Tyler said. “Quite often in these small fields they are pretty hard races to predict what is going to happen.

“There was a bit of speed on upfront and those back ones just sat up and watched her. It was a good effort and she is a really tough horse and a real professional, probably the most professional horse I have ever had.

“She knows exactly what she is there for and what she is meant to do.”

Owner-trainer Tyler is now eyeing more black-type with the nine-win mare later this spring after she placed in the Gr.3 South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) earlier this year.

“She’s pulled up really well since Saturday,” he said. “I’m not too sure what to do with her.

I’m half-pie tempted to take her up north for some nice races up there, some fillies and mares races at Hawera and a couple of weeks later there is a nice race at Trentham.

“But it is a long way to go, so I’ll probably keep her a little bit fresh and wait around for the New Zealand Cup meeting probably. She’s nominated for the Coupland’s Mile (Gr.2, 1600m), but there is also the Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes.”

Cook makes record tally more special

Although his record-breaking wicket clinched victory for England over India, what meant most to James Anderson was that his retiring teammate Alastair Cook was on the field to witness it.

Anderson became the most successful fast-bowler in test history by claiming the final wicket in England’s 118-run fifth test win at the Oval on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old Anderson bowled Mohammed Shami for his 564th career wicket, passing Glenn McGrath for fourth on the all-time list and leaving himself only trailing spin bowlers, as England wrapped up a 4-1 series victory.

Despite Anderson’s moment of glory, it was his long-time teammate Cook – playing in his 161st and final test – who led England from the field, having set up the victory with a second innings century that left India chasing a record 464 to win.

“It was (perfect),” Anderson said. “Happy that Cookie was on the field to see that wicket. It’s been a tough week.”

Centuries from Lokesh Rahul and Rishabh Pant threatened what looked like a simple victory, but England took five wickets after tea to end No. 1-ranked India’s second innings on 345.

Adil Rashid removed both centurions, before Sam Curran struck twice to set the stage for Anderson.

“What Jimmy’s achieved and what he’s capable of achieving still is astounding really,” England captain Joe Root said.

“For him to have taken as many wickets as he has, to even be in the same league as McGrath and now chasing the big two spinners is a phenomenal effort.”

India made a good start after beginning the day 58-3 before Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari were lost in consecutive overs to leave it facing defeat on 167-5 at lunch.

That was despite Rahul’s first test century since December 2016, which was reached with three boundaries in one over against Ben Stokes. It was the first time an Indian opening batsman had gone past 50 in the series.

Rahul’s runs at first seemed consolatory but a comeback victory then appeared realistic when Pant, India’s 20-year-old wicketkeeper, hit a six off Rashid shortly before tea for his maiden test century.

That left India needing 166 runs in the final session to reach what would have been a record chase of 464.

The bowling greens of Mid Canterbury will come to life following winter hibernation this weekend with a number of the seven local clubs opening their gates for the first time for the new season on Saturday.

Despite the presence of winter bowls, largely at Allenton on the artificial green during the winter,

it’s been a quiet off season but things hook right into full swing at the weekend and pretty quickly the season builds its way up to full momentum.

Ashburton-based clubs Allenton, Hampstead and the Ashburton MSA will welcome members back onto the greens on Saturday for their official opening days, the first clubs in the district to open the doors.

Allenton will be in for a busy weekend with not only their regular Friday Triples on tomorrow, but also opening day on Saturday and then the first tournament of the new season – the Anama Tray which is an Aussie Pairs tournament.

Next Saturday almost all of the remaining clubs, Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia will all open for the season.

Hinds will be the last club of the season to get under way with their opening day set down for Saturday, September 29.

All clubs across the district expressed their desire to see new faces making their way into the clubs for the season as numbers for the sport continue to remain stagnant around the country.

“It’s a tough sport to get new people into for some reason,” one

club representative said.

“But we would always be more than welcoming of seeing new faces and introducing new people to the sport, that’s for sure.”

From this weekend in Mid Canterbury, the bowling season will see action on almost every day of the week around the region with club championship, interclub tournaments and regular weekend events.

AC spying concerns at boat bases The sensitive issue of America’s Cup spying has reared its head in Environment Court hearings into the planned bases at Wynyard Point.

The court is hearing a resource consent application from Auckland Council’s development arm Panuku Developments for the $200 million bases project for the 2021 event.

While the majority of issues have been agreed, two remain in dispute — building design and minimum requirements for clear glazing, reports Sail-world.com.

In previous America’s Cups secrecy has been paramount in teams getting an edge over opponents, so syndicates are uneasy if the public, and potentially spies from other teams will be able to

see what is going on inside.

The original requirement was for glazing of 60 per cent of one of the sides of Luna Rossa’s Hobson Wharf and 100 per cent of the western side of the other bases.

These areas of glazing have been termed “passive surveillance”. It is unclear what triggered the “passive surveillance” requirement.

The size of the glazing has been

reduced to 30 per cent for Luna Rossa and 33 per cent for the other bases but the public and opponents will be able to watch and photograph what is going on behind the glass.

While all parties have agreed they will accept the court’s decision and will not appeal, design and development has been a major part of past cups.

Team New Zealand got a massive jump on their opponents in the last two cups working in secret, being the first to foil the 72ft catamarans for the 2013 event in San Francisco and then developing the cyclors grinding concept which gave them a huge power advantage in their winning challenge in Bermuda last year.
