The fate of a popular local event is hanging in the balance, as the Mid Canterbury Children’s Day committee desperately seeks more members. For nine years on the first Sunday of March, local Children’s Day celebrations have brought smiles to the faces of thousands of local littlies with free activities from face-painting to bungee jumping, rides, entertainment and family fun. But unless more helpers get involved, this year could have been the last, chair Alice Czerski said.

“At the moment, we just don’t have enough people on board.” Children’s Day is celebrated nationally, but few other towns and cities offer activities for free, the committee advised. The Mid Canterbury event was the brainchild of a group of local social workers wanting to provide littlies with opportunities they might not otherwise experience. It is now held at the Plains Museum, planned and fundraised for by a small committee of six people and five trustees from all walks of life.

Lorayne Oakley, a long-time member of the organising committee and chairperson and secretary of the Mid Canterbury Children’s Day Trust, said being part of the team that runs Mid Canterbury Children’s Day is a privilege. “I’ve met so many amazingly generous, dedicated people who have given many, many hours of their free time to organise and implement this event over the past nine years,” she said.
