A Tinwald painter’s car was torched over the weekend after thieves broke into it and stole a number of items.

Praise for saving property Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade is being praised for their quick thinking after a fire broke out in a Tinwald shed over the weekend.

Station Officer Murray Cairns said a number of appliances from the Ashburton Station, as well as the Rural Ashburton Fire Force and the Methven brigade attended the callout.

An appliance from Rakaia was also brought in to cover the Ashburton station while the other crews worked on the fire.

Cairns said a number of classic cars were stored in the shed but they were pulled out before any damage was done.

The owner of the shed praised the firefighters involved for their work in saving the property.

Cairns said the investigation of the blaze is still being conducted but it is not being treated as suspicious.

Fond farewells as members retire There were fond farewells at the Methven Community Board yesterday as long-standing and hard-working members retired, some with a plan to return to local body politics, some departing for good.

It was the final meeting of the board until after the local body elections in October.

Martin Nordqvist has spent the past 18 years as a member of the community board and Ashburton District Council. He is not seeking re-election, along with Councillor Alan Totty, who also attends Methven meetings as a representative of the western ward.

Board chairperson Liz McMillan also retired, though she is seeking a seat around the council table as a representative of

Other board members are seeking re-election and for the first time in six years there will be an election for the six board spots.

McMillan, who has been on the board for nine years, said yesterday Nordqvist would be missed for his long knowledge of Methven affairs.

She said the board had “ticked off” a few projects over the years, from drainage projects to safer street crossings and a skatepark, and had formed a valuable relationship with council staff.

Nordqvist said McMillan’s leadership since 2010 had been impeccable and she had helped attract the national community boards conference to Methven next year.

A green and beautifully sculpted slice of Mid Canterbury will be broadcast into living rooms around the country tonight when Trott’s Gardens feature in TV One’s Kiwi Living programme.

The gardens developed by Alan and Catherine Trott are a tourist attraction and tonight’s programme will focus on its knot gardens.

Alan Trott said the knot gardens planted in 2002 were unique in New Zealand and one overseas expert had called them the best in the world.

Plants in a knot garden are grown in a pattern and trimmed to keep their shape.

Trott said they took several years to establish and he would be sharing some DIY advice with Kiwi Living’s gardener Tony Morrell as part of the television progamme.

The knot gardens at Trott’s are part of the garden’s formal area, which is a study of perfect dimension and scale, tall hedging and clipped topiary.

He said roses were pulled out back in 2002 to create the knot garden and he had a plan to create a unique area from the start.

The pattern can be best seen from a viewing tower.

The garden has been awarded the prestigious Garden of International Significance by the New Zealand Garden Trust, for gardens considered to be outstanding for their horticultural value in plant material, cultivation, design, construction, and maintenance.

Experience Mid Canterbury general manager Bruce Moffat said the television airtime was great exposure for the gardens, and for the wider Mid Canterbury area.

Revitalise our town; retailers want help

Ashburton retailers’ fight for one hour free parking in Ashburton might be done and dusted, but that’s just the start of their battle to breathe new life into the CBD days retailer Bob McDonald.

Faulty inner town meters were providing the ultimate disincentive to shoppers and that was hurting an already struggling CBD, McDonald said.

The retailers petitioned the Ashburton District Council, formed a working party, came up with options and won the day and the response has been almost immediate, he said.

“We really appreciate how quickly this has gone through with the council and we’re already getting good feedback.

Retailers are telling us their customers are thrilled.”

The council also agreed to create an affordable long term parking lot on the Eastfield site, changing its charging regime in that area to just $2 for a full day.

Parking, however, is just one step in what will be the huge challenge of revitalising the

CBD and that is where retailers are now turning their energies, McDonald said.

“We’re now looking at the next phase and we want to encourage people to use our Facebook page as a forum to post ideas for discussion.

“We want their ideas and we want to know what their vision is.”

People could also put their ideas in writing and drop those into either Health 2000, Todds Fashions or the East Street Pharmacy.

“I think there’ll be plenty of interest, people are already putting ideas forward.

We want to get the council involved in this too, we’ll be looking for their support.

“This is about the community having its say and it’s about us as retailers working with anyone or any organisation or group that wants to achieve the same goals as us.”

The objective was to achieve a brand for the CBD and for the redevelopment and revitalisation to build on this, McDonald said.

Parents stack pallets for school production By emma moody

Parents of Tinwald School students were helping pile up pallets in the school hall yesterday.

The pallets are being used as the stage for the school’s production, Colour My World.

Tinwald School principal Peter Livingstone said there are 128 seed pallets being used to create a stage, which is four pallets high and he said the next steps are nailing wood onto the pallets to create

a floor and wrap paper around the sides to cover up the pallet sides.

Livingstone said the reason for using pallets was the ease of installation.

“There are about nine people here helping out, it couldn’t have been done without them.

“They started just before 9am and in 15 minutes they are over halfway,” Livingstone said.

Most of the staging was completed and Livingstone said after the pallets were stacked, the walls

were going up and all the stage lighting was being installed.

Livingstone said there will be a rotating cast of about 230 children on the stage for the school’s production.

“The reason we have stacked the pallets higher up is to make it easier to see the kids on stage when you’re sitting near the back of the hall,” he said.

The pallets were on loan from PGG Wrightson and they had to be out of the hall by September 23.

Local builder competes for national award Ashburton builder Carmen Sutton is one of three women in the running for a national tradeswoman of the year award.

Sutton, who works for McIntosh Builders, will be in Wellington tomorrow for the excellence awards run by the National Association of Women in Construction NZ. The association is the voice of increasing numbers of women working in the building industry.

She will be up against Mi’easha Saunders of Venture Developments Ltd and Sharlene Rowe of Steven-

son Construction Materials for the national award.

Sutton became an apprentice at 40 and even completing her pretrade training was a huge step – she is dyslexic and has Irien Syndrome, which makes it difficult for her to read black print on white paper.

A huge help in building her confidence and self-belief was winning an Advance Ashburton scholarship to Outward Bound.

She has now completed her apprenticeship and is a qualified builder.

Mayoral candidates front up This week Ashburton’s two mayoral candidates, Angus McKay and Donna Favel, will answer some of the questions that are on Guardian readers’ minds. We asked for your questions and we’ve now put those questions to the two candidates.

On Saturday, to coincide with the arrival of ballot papers in voters’ letterboxes, the Guardian will be publishing a voter guide. This will contain profile statements and photos of each candidate for all issues at stake across the district.

Question: Do you agree that employment is an important issue in Ashburton and that if the sale of Lot 9 with its water consent would provide a significant number of jobs, then it should be sold to an approved purchaser?

Donna Favel

Donna Favel: A bottling plant near Christchurch employs less than 15 people, council sought assurance from purchasers of the 100 jobs cited or any other claims the purchaser implied, these were never substantiated.

Additionally the stockwater is consented for stock, domestic and fire fighting uses ONLY. It is my view using this water to recharge is contrary to our objective to increase the waterflow in the Ashburton River.

Angus McKay: Employment opportunities are very important for the continued growth of this district. I’m encouraging potential industries to consider purchasing sections in the Business Estate to create significant job prospects in the district.

Question: What are your views on Easter trading and the council’s role in setting trading hours?

Angus McKay

Donna Favel: If Central Government wish to absolve themselves of this decision, welcome to accept it. Since I trade (legally) on Easter I may have a con-

flict of interest on this question, however so will restaurants, service stations, contractors, nurses, doctors and police.

Angus McKay: The community and district should choose, and the council’s role will be to lead consultation on this.

Question: What is your opinion of the fluoridation of Ashburton’s water supply?

Donna Favel: April 2016 Central Government is moving to make fluoridation a district health board decision.

Angus McKay: Fluoridation is a health issue and should be decided by the Ministry of Health.

Question: What are your interests, sports, hobbies? What is your religion? What schools did you attend? What is your employment history? Do you have a criminal conviction?

Donna Favel: Interests – movies, travel. Sports – represent Mid Canterbury Netball, softball – love watching sport.

Schools – Shirley Primary, Pareora Primary, Tinwald Primary, Ashburton Intermediate, Ashburton College. Criminal convictions – none.

Angus McKay: I’m a family man and love catching up with my two wonderful grandsons.

Rugby is my sport of choice – although I’m now a supporter from the sideline or couch!

When I’m not busy in the community and helping others you can find me tidying up on the farm. I’m a born and bred local and went to Lyndhurst Primary School, on to Methven High School and then graduated from the Telford Farm Training Institute.

My background is in farming.

The farm is now leased out to family, so I can focus on leading the district as your mayor! And finally, I am a believer with no criminal convictions.

Question: If the candidates believe Ashburton should be a tidy town, how would they deal with houses that are either not tenanted and not maintained or with properties where tenants leave old furniture and cars on their front lawn?

Donna Favel: This is really a “be a nice neighbour issue”, unless it is a health or fire hazard.

Angus McKay: Ashburton, along with the rest of the district, should be as tidy as possible – and peer pressure is the best. There are bylaws in place (initiated by council after public consultation) which are complaint driven. The balance between the rights of the individual and the community are about right.

The investigation into the alleged theft of 500 cows from an Ashburton farm continued on Friday as police executed a search warrant. Ashburton Police searched the property of a person of interest in connection with the alleged theft. No arrests have been made at this time and the inquiry team are continuing to investigate. Car crashes St John Ambulance crews attended a motor vehicle accident on Upper Downs Road on Sunday.

Two ambulances attended after a single car went off the road, one male in his 20s was transported to Ashburton Hospital with moderate injuries. Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade also attended the scene.

Ploughers fall short New Zealand’s representatives in the world ploughing contest in York have returned short of the top placings. Ian Woolley, competing in the conventional category, was placed 10th after the two days of competition, while Malcolm Taylor, in the reversible, was 17th. Woolley accumulated 341 points while the competition was won by Andrew Mitchell junior, from Scotland, on 396.5 points. Taylor’s reversible category was won by Andrew Mitchell senior, on 420 points; Taylor scored 311.

Saved by wife A bar patron who was attacked by a knife-wielding robber at a Christchurch pub was saved by his wife who heard the scuffle from another room. The masked robber entered the Celtic Arms Inn in Spreydon shortly after 11pm on Saturday. Inn manager Tracy Libline said the robber went directly for the patron, who was the only man in the bar at the time. The patron’s wife heard the attack came in and pushed the robber from behind. The offender then pushed the husband and wife to the ground while demanding money from the till.

He took $900 and fled towards Brougham Street, Libline said.

Farmer fined $1200 for cow’s suffering Failing to treat a dairy cow with an advanced case of cancer eye and trucking it to the meatworks resulted in a conviction under the Animal Welfare Act for a Methven farmer.

Alistair Roberts, 53, loaded 45 cows on a truck bound for the Belfast meatworks in May including the suffering animal – cow number 508.

Although the disease had advanced to the point the animal’s eyeball had rotted way leaving necrotic tissue, Roberts checked the ear tag numbers off as the cows were loaded, however he failed to note the injury.

When the consignment arrived in Christchurch a yardman at the meatworks noticed a “vile smell” coming from the truck. When the animals were unloaded he saw

fresh blood oozing from cow 508’s right eye.

The cow was separated from the others. A Ministry of Primary Industries veterinarian examined her and diagnosed a “very bad cancer eye” which would have caused unreasonable and unnecessary pain and distress over a long period.

Cancer eye is a relatively common disease in dairy cattle.

The vet noted the stench was appalling and concluded it would have been highly unlikely those working with the cow would have been unaware of its condition, particularly when it was in the milking shed. Cow 508 was immediately euthanised.

When questioned Roberts said he had noticed the cow had a closed eye about two weeks beforehand and decided to cull her

from his herd.

He acknowledged the cow should not have been transported but rather euthanised on farm.

Roberts also absolved the truck driver of any responsibility, saying he had remained in the vehicle while the cattle were loaded.

Judge Jane McMeeken noted that Roberts was a first offender and had promptly admitted his guilt, but said animals are entitled to humane treatment and he had neglected his duty in failing to get treatment for the cow and in transporting it.

“This is a lesson for people dealing with livestock to be vigilant,” she said.

Roberts was fined $700 for failing to ensure the disease was treated and a further $500 for the transport matter.

Prison warning for recidivist shoplifter A recidivist shoplifter and mother of nine appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Sela Mita Cook, 32, of Netherby, admitted a charge of theft but denied shoplifting and trespassing.

The court was told Cook, who has 127 convictions for dishonesty offences, stole electronic equipment valued at $547 from Dick Smith on March 19, just five days after she was sentenced on other dishonesty charges.

Police allege that on April 12 – the day following her first appearance on the fresh charge, she was at The Warehouse, which she is trespassed from.

While there police say she stole two Leap Pad toys valued at $249 each.

Judge Jane McMeeken questioned why Cook continued to

have babies. She currently has six of her nine children in her care.

“You keep having babies and you keep committing crime – you’ve been to jail before for stealing but it hasn’t stopped you,” the judge said.

However, she noted Cook had not had the benefit of a rehabilitative sentence and asked probation services to look into options.

Cook was remanded for sentencing on her guilty pleas until the conclusion of a trial set down for October 25 to ascertain the outcome of the matters she denies.

“If Ms Cook steals anything between now and then she will be telling everyone she wants to go to prison,” Judge McMeeken said.

Rotarians reward workmanship

Eleven Mid Canterbury employees were honoured at the Ashburton Plains Rotary Club Pride of Workmanship Awards on September 7.

The MSA was packed with 95 attendees who came to support the nominees and watch them be presented with their Pride of Workmanship Awards.

The Ashburton Plains Rotary Club community services director Sue Blacklow-Cahill said the employees are nominated by their employers for showing qualities in the workplace that deserve special recognition.

The awards were presented by the Ashburton Plains Rotary Club president Ray King and guest speaker at the awards Veronica Wall.

Veronica, along with her parents Justin Wall and Charlotte Cox, were the night’s guest speakers.

The family has strong ties to rowing in New Zealand, with Justin being the coach of the Ashburton College and Ashburton Rowing squads and Cox being a former New Zealand champion.

The recipients of the Ashburton Plains Rotary Club Pride of Workmanship Awards and their employers, with one of the guest speakers of the night, Veronica Wall.

I

t was a meeting with a difference from the outset, yesterday’s Methven Community Board meeting.

There was a special tree to be given away and neenish tarts to have with a cuppa after business was done and dusted.

It was the end of an era for Martin Nordqvist, who has spent two terms as an Ashburton District Councillor and four terms on the community board before that.

Methven and its surrounding district has been his lifetime home and he won’t be allowed to slip quietly into the night after 18 years on council and about as many years before that on sporting and cultural committees connected to the town.

He has watched the town grow, making sure Methven was never lost in the district’s big picture.

He has always listened to sensible comments and discussion, and tried to be fair to ratepayers.

And he has never been afraid to get his hands dirty.

While Methven struggled with the loss of its townsman hours, Nordqvist was not above picking up a few bags of rubbish to keep the place tidy as he walked to the shops.

Nordqvist may miss council and board activities, but he probably won’t miss the late night phone calls and constant invasion of his private life.

Ratepayers don’t keep 9-5 hours and many a meal he has probably reheated in the microwave after hearing the merits or otherwise of a council decision.

His replacement at council’s table seems obvious, but voters will ultimately decide that on October 8.

There are plenty of new faces among local body candidates across the district these elections and plenty of opportunity to meet them, or see them in action at meet-the-candidates sessions.

Don’t sit back and say you don’t know some – make an effort to hear them speak or shake their hand, take an interest.

People who put themselves forward for public service this way aren’t in it for the money – they have aspirations for us and our district.

YOUR VIEW Civic centre Many people have asked a lot of questions about the proposed council buildings in your pages and have received only a deafening silence from consultants, staff and councillors.

It would be helpful if someone answered questions before submissions close.

Why do the library and the council building have to be on the same site? They have a different clientele.

Why does no site have on-site staff/councillor/fleet parking to anywhere near the level that is used on the present site?

Where are the additional cars to park? The streets are already being used by staff cars.

If the library moves to the east of town will the schools that currently walk students to the library still use it?

What provision has been made on any site for bus parking when schools bring children by bus?

Why the rush to get this through before the election?

What prevents the present building being strengthened? The submission document refers to the costs associated with strengthening it but gives no details.

Why is the full site not utilised in the Balmoral Hall option?

How will moving the council offices to the Eastfield site revitalise the CBD? Council vehicles parked on the streets will keep genuine shoppers away.

Come on Opus – if people are meant to help councillors make a decision through this consultation those people need the full facts.

Eastfield, of course, recognises the critical role that car parking has to play not only with the administration and library facility but also with the wider rebuilding of the Ashburton CBD. The company therefore plans, as part of the overall site development, to construct a multi-level car park building with at least 120 parking spaces.

This will not only be Ashburton’s first under cover parking facility but will provide more than enough capacity to support the parking requirements of the administration and library facility.

The consultants, Opus Architecture, are well aware of Eastfield’s intentions. However, because Eastfield scored a “fail” for car parking in the Opus Consultation Document, I think the public perception is, not surprisingly, that the Eastfield option has no provision for on-site parking.

This is simply not correct.

ith hotly contested demand for stock, farmers and meat processors need to think carefully about their existing strategy and what it means for our industry in the long-term.

Rural New Zealand has been through a challenging climate in recent years, with many farmers still enduring the fallout and adjusting their farm policies going forward as they look to return to normal.

Whether you have been through severe drought or destocked as a result of last season’s perceived strong el nino you will be looking to re-stock to more normal numbers.

Severe drought areas will be affected longer as pastures need to be re-established, which will start as soon as farmers feel confident in the weather patterns. For many this is not evident yet and short-term crops will continue to be the backbone of feed supplies.

For those who de-stocked through the el nino period, many discovered very strong store prices in autumn and chose not to re-stock.

choosing to remove their animals from grazing with sheep and beef operations.

Many farmers were looking at re-stocking in late winter, due to excellent autumn growth and a mild start to winter in the North Island and pasture growth improvement in some areas of the South Island.

As farmers began re-stocking, many discovered extreme competition for the numbers of stock available which has made purchase price levels challenging for farmers to make a viable return.

For now, there will be increased demand for the limited supply which will last for a lengthy period. That is a certainty given the levels of de-stocking we have witnessed in recent years and a large portion of the country affected.

Of greater concern, as farmers attempt to purchase stock classes

they can farm for future seasons, they are competing with meat companies who are aggressively sourcing stock.

The question to meat processors would be, are they supplying pre-committed contracts or purely filling throughput?

To see breeding capable cows, heifers, ewes and hoggets heading to slaughter at a time farmers are looking at all avenues to restock is for them very disheartening.

If we are slaughtering breeding animals just to fulfil throughput, we will be spreading the supply pain out over seasons to come. Meat processors’ supply chains will be challenged further considering lamb numbers could be down 700,000 for this coming season.

Given farmer demand to rebuild stock numbers, it’s prudent our short-term actions don’t produce unnecessary challenges for the long-term, which in my view means we retain breeding capable animals for future breeding.

They must not be sent to slaughter or be live exported.

the support meat processors provided, given the extra challenges to them when they’re flooded with animals.

Farmers understand meat companies face seasonality, climatic events, staffing issues, and market factors, but it’s important as industry players we all look at the big picture for the benefit of us all.

Likewise for the live shipment of hoggets to Mexico that assisted in easing a challenging drought situation, at a time when de-stocking needed to occur. The actions by all parties involved, avoided any significant rise in the level of animal welfare breakdowns.

Going forward I see the immediate challenge to the industry as whether we take a long-term view or do what we so often do and stay in the present.

Ultimately without a long-term approach, we may be setting ourselves up for fallout at all levels of our industry, a situation none of us want to see.

National guest nights advanced 6.9 per cent to 2.6 million in July from the same month a year earlier, Statistics New Zealand said. The biggest jump came from international guest nights, up 16 per cent, while domestic guest nights rose 2 per cent.

New Zealand shares have fallen sharply as fears about rising US interest rates sparked a return to market volatility following a long period of calm.

The S&P/NZX 50 was down 2.5 per cent at 7287.31 at 2pm, following on from a Wall Street rout on Friday that saw the S&P 500 notch up a 2.4 per cent loss for the week.

Yesterday’s sell-off on the local market is bigger than the slump on June 24, when Britain voted to leave the European Union, sending financial markets into chaos.

The NZX 50 closed down 2.3 per cent on the day of Brexit vote.

The return of volatility – sparked by concerns that the US Federal Reserve may begin hiking interest rates sooner than expected – ended the calm that had enveloped markets since late June, following the recovery from the Brexit shock.

Stephen Bennie, of Auckland fund manager Castle Point, said stocks had been trading in a “remarkably tight range” for some time.

“Ever since they recovered from Brexit Stephen Bennie they had been in this flat-line period,” he said.

“When you get that type of situation, the next move is often quite impulsive ... And it went sharply lower.”

The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index, known as Wall Street’s “fear gauge”, rose above 17 for the first time in 50 trading sessions on Friday, according to Bloomberg.

Commodity-linked currencies, including the New Zealand dollar, also fell.

The kiwi was trading at 73.14c at 8am yesterday morning, down from US73.97c last week.

Wall Street’s rout followed comments from Boston Federal Reserve President Eric Rosengren that the US central bank faced risks if it waited too long to raise rates.

Low and negative interest rates and bond yields have been pushing investors toward stocks and fuelling an equity bull-run that is now well into its seventh year in New Zealand and the US. Bennie said investors were having to “get their heads around” how markets would react to rising interest rates.

“Also in the mix is the US election and that’s starting to get a lot tighter.”

Australia has roughly six weeks to prevent a housing market collapse caused by the banks’ crackdown on foreign investor lending, a US defence think tank has warned. In an article titled “Australia Risks Strategic Setback From a Significant Foreign Direct Investment Drop Due to Changes in Bank Policies”, the Washingtonbased International Strategic Studies Association warns that Australia “may be entering a significant phase of its economicstrategic development”. It argues “changes in local banking policies” could see foreign direct investment in the property sector “decline markedly”.

Profits in apartments Aucklanders who bought apartments off the plans in two big new blocks are re-selling without moving in and making up to $100,000 each after just two or three years, an agency boss says.

Martin Dunn, City Sales managing director, said the re-sales were in the new Urba on Howe St built by Conrad Properties and the new Sugartree between Union St and Nelson St. “In the last month, we’ve re-sold about five brand new neverbeen-lived in Urba units bought off the plans. The original purchasers had made profits in the vicinity of about $100,000 each. The same has happened in Sugartree,” Dunn said.

■ Once the noodles are drained; mix with chopped coriander, mung beans, snow pea shoot, sliced ½ red chili and sesame oil.

■ Lastly mix in chopped roasted unsalted cashew nuts and season with cracked pepper and the juice of ½ a lemon.

■ To serve: Place the glass noodles in the centre of a deep bowl and serve sliced cooked chicken breast on top.

Pour over 1-2 tablespoons of cooking liquor from the chicken.

Freeze branding could thwart rustlers

As police efforts to track down the 500 dairy cows stolen from a Mid Canterbury dairy farm during the winter continue, a growing number of people are advocating freeze branding as a means of deterring rustlers.

Owner of NZ Wide Freeze Branding Stuart Makgill brands about 30,000 cattle each year.

While the majority are stud beef cattle, he says the demand for his services within the dairy sector is increasing.

In view of the rising number of reported dairy cow thefts, Makgill said the decision to brand was a no-brainer.

At about $7 a head including GST branding is a cost effective and permanent way to identify animals.

Currently the majority of dairy farmers rely on Nait (national animal identification tracing) tags to identify individual animals and track stock movements.

The Nait programme was set up to trace the movements of all cattle and deer in New Zealand to manage disease outbreaks, with a focus on bovine tuberculosis (TB) in line with biosecurity requirements.

Under the scheme it is mandatory for all cattle and deer to be identified with an approved permanent Nait tag within 180 days of birth or prior to movement.

In short it ties individual animals with individual properties

and enables accurate tracking from birth to death or live export.

It is illegal under the Nait Act to accept untagged animals at sale yards or meatworks.

However, there are shortcomings within the system. Unscrupulous operators can remove and replace tags to muddy the water

when it comes to identifying stolen animals.

Former Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president Willy Leferink agreed the tags could be replaced, but said not many people would have access to 500 spare Nait tags.

Late last week Ashburton po-

lice senior sergeant Scott Banfield said it was unlikely 500 cows were taken from the property in one hit. He said the more probable scenario was that small numbers were removed from the property over a period of time.

If this were the case, replacement Nait tags would have been easier to source.

A victim of dairy cattle rustling last December also expressed misgivings about the Nait system.

She said meatworks records were not always accurate and quoted a recent instance when cull cows were processed but the Nait tag numbers were omitted from the killing records. As a result the business is now investigating freeze branding.

By comparison, Makgill said freeze branding was foolproof – the only way to remove a brand was to cut it out which would leave significant scarring.

The painless procedure is routinely carried out on racehorses in accordance with industry protocols.

In the case of dairy cattle brands could be manufactured in the form of symbols of individual farmers’ choosing or a combinations of numbers, Makgill said.

Animals are branded on the rump and the symbol is clearly visible.

“It would stop rustlers in their tracks,” he said.

“They can’t put the cattle through saleyards or meatworks without detection – no one would

be stupid enough to steal branded cattle.”

The practice is commonplace in European dairy herds.

Mid Canterbury dairy farmer Nathan Currie agreed freeze branding could be a useful tool and preferable to microchips which require a scanner to read.

“Microchips are difficult to read and they can be removed,” he said.

While police have a team of officers dedicated to solving the most recent case of stock theft it remains one of several such crimes outstanding in the district in recent years.

Thirty seven cows were stolen from a Mayfield farm in December and 19 from a Hinds farm shortly afterwards. Within the same timeframe 52 friesian bull calves were taken from an Alford Forest property.

In 2013 more than 100 sheep and 60 calves were reported missing from properties in the Rakaia district.

Currie is concerned that in the current climate of distrust in the Mid Canterbury hinterland, farmers could start taking matters into their own hands, and in his capacity as dairy group chairman for Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers, warned against this.

He said farmers should remain vigilant, keep a close eye on movements around their properties, check stock numbers regularly and report anything suspicious to police.

Saleyards site to be sold

Negotiations for the sale of the Tinwald Saleyards site are under way as rural service company PGG Wrightson prepares to close the gate on the historic operation.

The company announced its decision on Thursday citing falling stock numbers and compliance issues as the reason. The final auction will be held on December 13, calling time on 138 years of service.

PGG Wrightson Mid Canterbury livestock manager Greg Cook said the timing of the sale of the five hectare site was currently being finalised.

No job losses are expected as a consequence, Cook said.

Farmers will now put stock through the Temuka Saleyards or Christchurch’s Canterbury Park yards. Online livestock sales had also changed the landscape in terms of stock sales, Cook said.

New health and safety legislation and urban development in recent years had also influenced the decision to close the yards. “It’s becoming increasingly difficult to manage compliance on the Tinwald site. It used to be a rural area but the town has expanded around it,” Cook said.

Modern transport options made it feasible to shift stock longer distances and would cause little disruption to vendors or buyers. From a buyer’s perspective, competition from larger buyer galleries would help keep prices up. As few as 12 people attend the Tuesday sales at the Tinwald yards, with much of the offering changing hands through agents.

“Most people have been expecting this because of changing land use in Mid Canterbury – gone are the days when we filled the yards for ewe fairs.”

The milking shed has become the preferred destination over the shearing shed for these Southland sheep.

Their milk is processed at Hamilton’s Innovation Park into

high value yoghurt, pro-biotics, ice cream and protein products aimed at the fitness market.

Neylon likened any supply arrangement to a conventional dairy farmer supply agreement with a processor, receiving monthly payments for milk supplied.

“We have made a point of ensuring our growth has been very much demand led, it’s not dissimilar to what the dairy goat industry has also experienced.”

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy last month welcomed a new $31.4 million Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) programme, aimed at boosting

New Zealand’s sheep milk industry. He said the industry had huge potential, and was worth $6.5 billion globally. The programme was expected to generate annual revenue of at least $200 million in New Zealand by 2030 from milk and new highvalue related products such as ice-cream.

“There is increasing demand for sheep milk products, particularly in Asia, where many people are intolerant to cow’s milk. We have a massive opportunity to tap into this market, and further position New Zealand as a producer of premium products,” Guy said.

MARKET REPORT Dairy The province survived last week’s spring storm without too many reported stock casualties, as nature again reminded farmers who is in control.

The signs of spring are plentiful, but the region still lags behind in soil moisture levels and managers will be planning ahead with that in mind.

Soil temperatures are lifting and urea applications will now be kicking grass growth into gear and milk flows are building.

Monitoring of R2 heifers will give farmers an update on how they are tracking as mating looms, as after heavy culling every animal must perform in the herds’ replacements.

More optimism in the milk market when last week’s auction delivered another strong lift, which have now totalled nearly 30 per cent in the last three events.

Analysts suggest the price correction may be largely complete and predict a future period of consolidation, with only low supply forecasts likely to drive further rises.

Others warn that the market fundamentals have not changed significantly, with oil prices still low, no signs from China of impending shortages and the high NZD still impeding farmgate returns. Managers should be very cautious on spending decisions for a while yet.

Open Country Cheese lifted its payout to $4.60-$4.90 in line with its competitors, but did warn farmers the recent rises maybe just a market blip.

Funding has been received for the next stage of the Hurunui Water Project and the development is under way in an area still desperately dry.

The project has been developed as a low density scheme with most farmers only committing to irrigating 25-35 per cent of their properties, but this amount of water will enable them to significantly improve the profitability of their dryland systems.

Lamb Some significant drops in lamb schedules this week. Market insecurity continues and the end of September deadline for OIO approval for the Shanghai Maling deal, nears.

Sheep farmers desperately need some better market news and a new vision for the future, or stock numbers will keep falling, putting more pressure on the over capacity of the processing sector.

Alliance has announced a $7.5 million upgrade at its Pukeuri plant, using robotic cutting machinery to improve cuts, minimise waste, and meet health and safety requirements.

The Tinwald saleyards has announced closure as a result of land use changes out of sheep, and vendors will now have to use facilities at both ends of the region to sell their livestock by auction.

Wool This week’s South Island wool auction fell again and only 55 per cent of the offering met vendors’ expectations.

Another currency lift, and restricted activity from the markets, mainly China, was again the main reasons for the poor sale.

Crossbred wools fell to new yearly indicator lows.

Merino and mid micron wools also fell in price by 1-8 per cent, disappointing vendors who earn a big percentage of their farm income from the product.

Beef Beef schedules fell this week, as poor prices for US domestic beef continue to overhang the market, and some believe exporters will face a big correction soon especially for manufacturing cuts.

Prime cuts are faring better and strong demand from the local trade buyers has kept export processors competitive.

Prime steers at saleyards, however, are still selling at values well behind last year, but store stock well ahead, so an adjustment may soon come, when finishers sell and need to replace.

Deer The true value of the chilled trade was revealed this week as Silver Fern Farms offered $8.80/kg as its high season price.

This value surpasses last year’s high, in spite of the currency, and producers will be hoping such a high level of return will not suppress demand.

Whale tales not much to report on

ecently a friend of mine posted an image on Facebook that made me extremely envious.

It was a rather long-distance shot of a spray of water which he stated was from a whale, or possibly whales. He said that he had originally thought it was the sail of a yacht but on a second look decided it was clearly evidence of whale activity. He was very excited and went on to say that over many, many years he had looked out to sea, hoping to view a whale and finally he had made it – lucky him!

What made me extra annoyed was that over many years, I too had walked and waited where he stood but with no sightings.

Although I have done the Kaikoura experience and got very close to a very large whale, I really would love to stumble upon one by accident – not deliberately looking but just wandering along and “there she blows”.

Such was my keenness to see whales close up that I went to the Antarctic and, although I spent almost all day searching (there was no night, only twilight), I only saw one.

Apparently the krill that the whales eat had had a late breeding season and so the whales were elsewhere and not where I was, although I was told that almost every other time they are there in number!

Living in Oamaru, and just a few blocks from the sea, my opportunity for random whale encounters was quite high on the possible scale.

Since moving to Ashburton, however, my chances of seeing any sea life has plummeted to almost zero. I say “almost” as Ashburton has had the rare occasion when a whale has washed ashore. While it doesn’t count as an encounter, it does imply that there are whales off the coast nearby, which gives me hope.

A whale ashore Many people will have heard of the whale that was washed ashore here recently. It caused quite a lot of interest in cetacean circles as it seemed to have been born without a tail fin and yet was seen swimming relatively normally off the Kaikoura coast. Sadly, it later died and landed on Wakanui Beach. In our digital age there have been reports and even videos made of people looking at the whale.

However, that isn’t the only whale to end its days in our area. These rather grainy photographs show a whale washed up on a beach between Waterton

and Ashton. From what I can gather the poor creature, which was about 40 feet long, was found washed up – no mention of whether it was alive or dead, although it looks to be in a bad state, covered in stones and misshapen. The Ashburton Guardian of June 29, 1921, simply stated that “the leviathan was discovered by Mrs Slater”.

A whale snippet I would have assumed that such an occurrence would have been reported at length in the newspapers, but apart from that snippet nothing more was said.

While it obviously stirred interest, the local newspapers chose instead to cover sport, the political unrest in Ireland, and a rather violent earthquake that seemed to rock the entire South Island.

While no doubt interesting to read that a man walking through the Arcade at about 1.35am (no mention of why!?) had said that the quake felt as if “a subterranean hand seemed to grip the Arcade and shake it” – surely a giant creature of the deep lying in state on a local beach would invoke some report?

I cannot even ascertain how the whale was disposed of.

I do know that it was still on the beach on July 4. Out-of-town boxers who had gathered in Ashburton for the Mid Canterbury boxing championships were hosted for an afternoon

by John Grigg. After they strolled around Longbeach and had afternoon tea, they were taken down to see the whale.

Honouring the Fallen

W

hy so many names on this week’s Honouring the Fallen banner?

This marks the beginning of our New Zealand forces’ first major engagement on the Western Front, the Battle of the Somme.

Over 50 men associated with the Ashburton District lost their lives between September 15 and October 26, 1916.

Around 6000 New Zealand men were wounded, and more than 2100 died.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of the First World War, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men. The Ashburton Museum with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, has erected in front of the Museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. An original flag is on display in the museum. This week the Ashburton Museum honours:

College skiers just miss title

Ashburton College’s boys’ ski team had a fine day on the slopes at Cardrona skifield to place a meritorious second in the South Island Secondary Schools’ Ski

Championships on Saturday.

The giant slalom ski course was in a different position this year, making the top half of the course steep and the bottom reasonably flat – providing a tough challenge for the skiers.

The Ashburton College boys’ team of Year 11s Mason Westwood and Will Kelly, Ben Wakelin of Year 13 and Year 12 Matthew Begg took out second place of 22 teams.

Meanwhile, Year 12 Sarah Taylor was College’s only girl in action and produced a fine performance to place 10th in the girls’ giant slalom section.

Novak Djokovic was slammed for “complete abuse” of tennis’s injury time-out rules during his US Open final defeat against Stan Wawrinka.

Trailing two sets to one and 3-1 in the fourth set, Djokovic called a halt to proceedings to have his toes taped. Wawrinka complained to the chair umpire his opponent should have been forced to wait until the change of ends after the fifth game, but Djokovic was allowed a six-minute break. Wawrinka eyes career grand slam

By Larry Fine Third seed Stan Wawrinka rose to the occasion once again to beat topseeded defending champion Novak Djokovic 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 7-5 6-3 and win the US Open men’s singles crown for the third grand slam title of his career.

The 31-year-old Swiss, who defeated Djokovic on his way to winning the 2014 Australian Open and 2015 French Open, denied the world No.1 a third grand slam title this year following the Serb’s wins in Australia and France.

Wawrinka, who does his best work with titles on the line, set up his championship point with an easy volley after sending a fatigued Djokovic deep into the backhand corner.

A Djokovic backhand that sailed long ended the nearly four-hour slugfest at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“This is amazing,” Wawrinka said at the trophy ceremony.

“I came here without the goal to win it, but every time I step on the court I tried my best to win every match.

“I think I played quite a lot of ten-

nis these two weeks, I am completely empty.

“I had to bring everything I had today against Novak. It was so much emotion.”

It was another Flushing Meadows disappointment for Djokovic, who in seven trips to the US Open final has twice won the title and finished runner-up five times.

“He is a great champion and deserves to win this title,” the 12-times slam winning Serb said in congratulating Wawrinka.

“We played almost four hours and we both felt it. We both felt the demanding match we played today physically but he came out on top.

“In the decisive moments he was a better player, he was tougher mentally.”

Djokovic who won the first set tiebreak 7-1 by running off the last five points, saluted Wawrinka as a “big match” player.

The Swiss has won three of their seven grand slam encounters.

“He loves to play in the big matches,” Djokovic said.

“He’s so solid from both corners.

He’s got a good slice and amazing one-handed backhand, all corners.

“Big serve. Moves well. He’s a very complete player.”

It was a gruelling, groundstroke battle that featured captivating rallies and brilliant shot-making from the familiar foes.

Wawrinka trailed Djokovic 19-4 in their career meetings, but the hardworking Swiss saves his best for the big stage and he came through with a superlative performance that extended his remarkable streak to 11 straight wins in tournament finals.

As the match wore on, Wawrinka proved stronger and appeared to have Djokovic on the ropes early in the fourth set. Djokovic was granted a medical timeout but the interruption did little to stem the victory charge by Wawrinka.

The victory was worth $US3.5m for Wawrinka, who is only missing a Wimbledon victory to complete the coveted career grand slam.

He is a perfect three-for-three in grand slam finals.

Wanganui lead the way three weeks into the Heartland Championship season after taking maximum points from their three outings.

The Butcher Boys made light work of West Coast in week one with a 74-6 hiding before putting East Coast to the sword in similar fashion for a 74-8 victory.

The Meads Cup-holders then collected their third successive bonus point by edging out South Canterbury 32-30 in a replay of last season’s final.

Wanganui are now the only unbeaten side in the competition and will be heavy favourites on paper when they lock horns with King Country this weekend.

Despite falling to their first defeat on Saturday, South Canterbury remain in second place on the ladder with 12 points after picking up a bonus point for coming within seven points of Wanganui.

But there’s little room for error for Barry Matthews’ men with Buller, King Country, Wairarapa Bush and North Otago all within two points.

South Canterbury will welcome Poverty Bay to the Alpine Energy Stadium on Saturday.

Week three featured two draws with North Otago and Horowhenua-Kapiti hashing out a 36-36 stalemate, while there was nothing between Thames Valley and King Country during their 22-22 draw.

Meanwhile, Buller took a 30-18 win over Poverty Bay in Gisborne to propel themselves to third on the points table while West Coast saw off East Coast 36-30 to leave the latter in search of their first win.

Mid Canterbury sit in an unfamiliar eighth place on the table having lost two of their three ties.

The 26-16 loss to a Wairarapa Bush side that featured ex-All Black Zac Guildford was the Hammers’ second defeat in as many weeks.

They will be out to right their wrongs against Horowhenua-Kapiti in Levin this week.

The Australian Diamonds have made changes to each end of the court for next month’s Constellation Cup series against the Silver Ferns. Jo Weston and Gretel Tippett have been added to the line-up, replacing Quad Series debutants Kristiana Manu’a and Stephanie Wood.

Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander indicated earlier this season she planned to mix up her line-ups for the two series’ in an effort to rebuild the depth in her squad. “We know we will be challenged in the Constellation Cup. Raiders name stars Canberra stars Josh Hodgson and Blake Austin will be named for Saturday’s NRL semi-final against Penrith, but whether they’re fit to take the field remains to be seen. The Raiders announced both Hodgson and Austin will be named in coach Ricky Stuart’s side. Hooker Hodgson remains a 50-50 chance to play against the Panthers after picking up an ankle injury in the weekend qualifying final loss to Cronulla. Five-eighth Austin is also rated a 50-50 chance. He hasn’t played since round 24 after suffering a hand injury at training.

All Blacks camp finds plenty to improve on

By Patrick mckendry The All Blacks put more than 50 points on Argentina in Hamilton, including 33 unanswered points in the final 27 minutes as they raised their speed to a level the visitors couldn’t live with, but they have judged themselves harshly in their review yesterday, saying significant improvements are required before their test against a “hurting” South Africa.

Chief among their deficiencies was the way the Pumas were able to burst through the middle of the All Blacks’ defence at Waikato Stadium with their offloading game; the Argentine pack showing a level of directness and handling that appeared to surprise the home side, who struggled initially to get their hands on the ball.

The lineout too, flawless in the two Bledisloe Cup tests, had its wobbles during the 57-22 win, with Dane Coles overthrowing twice, and the Springbok pack will look to put pressure on there

Diamonds wary of Ferns

“We point it out before the coaches,” the loose forward said.

“If the coaches have to tell you that this is where you have to improve before you point it out then there’s something wrong.

“As leaders we take it personally, we take it on ourselves to initiate that and our coaches give us guidance on how we can improve.

“You know when you’re in there whether you’ve nailed your role as a team and as a pack.

“We’ve taken the scoreboard out of it, we know that wasn’t a true reflection of how tough that match was and how much pressure we were under.

“We’ve really drilled down to those periods when we were put under pressure and how we can do better in those areas.

“At lineout time and as a pack we definitely want to have a lot

more influence on a game.

“I take my hat off to Argentina, they didn’t allow us to play that way.”

Halfback Aaron Smith cut a frustrated figure throughout as he was forced to contend with a Pumas pack determined to stamp their mark at the breakdown, and Kaino said the contact area was put under the microscope.

“That was one of the areas that we focused on – our physicality in the tackle, but also our cleanout.

“We pride ourselves on quick ball and for Aaron to have an easy night. In the first half we didn’t do that, we didn’t provide it.

“As a pack we took that personally so that’s one massive area we want to improve on this week.

“Attitude and physicality is at the top of the list.

“They put a lot of pressure through our heart with the offloads.

“South Africa will have had look at that and I’m sure they will want to add a bit of that at the weekend.”

A regular visitor to the French capital, the Strasbourg-born Wenger has often been linked in the past with an executive role at PSG when he finally leaves Arsenal, the club he joined in 1996. Since then the London side have qualified for the Champions League in every full season under his management.

Along with PSG, they must be regarded as favourites to qualify again.

Stayer remains on target Willie Cazals’ early New Zealand showings have kept him on course for a return to Group One racing.

Trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott have seen enough in the lightly-raced grey’s two appearances to continue on a path toward the Livamol Classic at Hastings on October 1.

Willie Cazals resumed off an 18-month break in the Gr.2 Foxbridge Plate and his chances weren’t helped when he missed the jump and raced keenly.

He finished ninth and was one spot better when he tackled an open mile at Hawke’s Bay, his chances not helped after being blocked for room in the straight “His run at Te Rapa was solid enough and we were very pleased with his effort at Hastings,” said Andrew Scott, who trains the Irish-bred with Lance O’Sullivan.

“He showed us a glimpse the other day that he’s nearing form and we hope he continues on an upward spiral.”

A stakes winner in Italy and runner-up in the Gr.2 Italian Derby, Willie Cazals subsequently joined Tony Cruz’s stable in Hong Kong.

He didn’t win there, but he did finish runnerup in the Gr.1 Hong Kong Vase in a field that included international Group winners Dominant, Curren Mirotic, Empoli, Red Cadeaux, Snow Sky and Parish Hall.

“He’ll have his next run in the open mile at Pukekohe on Sunday,” Scott said, referring to the Listed Karaka Classic.

Meanwhile, stablemate Gentil Tonton will head south to Hastings for this Saturday’s open 2000 metre handicap at Hastings.

“The long-term plan with him is the New Zealand Cup,” Scott said.

“He’s coming along well and the two miles won’t be a problem.”

Kerryn Manning’s former Kiwi pacer Ideal Success was thought to be one of many horses disadvantaged by Victoria ditching standing-start racing for pacers this season. The gelding had good standing start experience in NZ and won both the Ararat and Ouyen Cups from stands not long after moving from NZ to Manning’s stable early this year. Importantly, Ideal Success showed his versatility when he resumed from a spell and won well from the mobile in The Gammalite at Melton last Friday night. He’s now won five of his seven starts in Aussie.

Sophie’s our golden girl Sophie Pascoe has won her second gold of the Rio Paralympics after defending her title in the 200m individual medley SM10 final yesterday.

It is Pascoe’s 13th medal at the Paralympics and the third in her Rio campaign following a gold in the 100m backstroke S10 and silver medal in the 50m freestyle S10.

She broke her own world record to claim the 200m individual medley SM10 event for the

third straight Olympics.

The 23-year-old finished in a time of 2:24.90, more than five seconds clear of Canadian Aurelie Rivard.

Bianka Rap from Hungary took the bronze.

It is New Zealand’s fourth gold of the Games and takes the team’s total tally to nine.

Earlier Emma Foy and Laura Thompson (sighted pilot) had showed true guts and determi-

nation to win silver on the final day of racing at the Rio Velodrome at the Paralympics.

The duo qualified for the gold medal ride in the women’s B 3000m Individual Pursuit, finishing second behind the British tandem in a time of 3:31.569.

Meanwhile long jump gold medallist Anna Grimaldi just fell short of a second medal in Rio, finishing fourth in the 100m T47 final.
