Not standing again ‘like leaving a job half done’ BY SUE NEWMAN

With one year to run in her first term in the mayoral chair, Donna Favel says it’s likely she’ll be seeking a second term in office. While stopping one step short of making a binding commitment to seek another term, Favel said she believed she had more to offer the district. Deciding whether or not to seek a second term was like any decision, the pros and cons had to be carefully weighed up, she said. “The first two years have definitely been more challenging than I expected and there have been obstacles and personal challenges, but not standing again is like leaving a job half done.” “While I feel I can keep adding value to the community I’ll keep offering my services to the community.” Over the past two years both she and seven first-time councillors had been on a huge learning curve, she said and while she had seen her role, initially as supporting and growing those councillors, she had now pulled back to focus her energies on her mayoral responsibilities. There had also been significant change within council with one chief executive leaving and a several month vacancy before new chief executive Hamish Riach arrived, she said. “I am excited to now have Hamish in place and we’re looking to have a good, strong run for the next 12 months. “There’s a lot we can get done in those months and then I can definitely make my decision for the future with my eyes wide open.” Favel believes she has now developed her own mayoral style. “I believe I’m a leader who is flexible, adaptive and responsive.

Police have spoken to three people following an operation on Alford Forest Road on Thursday and arrested one. Following an aggravated burglary on Wednesday night, around a dozen police vehicles, the dog squad and the armed offenders swooped on a house on Thursday afternoon, in an operation that onlookers said was pretty incredible to watch unfold. Senior Sergeant Phil Dean said the operation related to the burglary of a house in Ashburton on Wednesday night in which there was a weapon involved. Following the operation, Ashburton Police have apprehended three people and spoken to them in relation to the incident, Dean said. He said one woman was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. She was due to appear in Christchurch District Court yesterday morning. The operation took place around 2pm and involved the partial closure of Alford Forest Road to traffic. The armed offenders gathered around the corner in Farm Road before approaching the property. It attracted interest from a group of onlookers, who gathered across the road. Before the area was cleared at around 2.10pm, an officer was seen assisting a woman, child and baby carrier from the house.

Fresh snow opportune for skifield’s closing weekend By Katie todd

Mt Hutt is ready to see out the ski season in style, with fresh powder arriving just in time for closing weekend and falling right down to Methven. By midday yesterday 20cm of new snow had already dusted the mountain and at least another 10-15cm was forecast to fall over the following 12 hours. Due to the accompanying gale winds and stormy weather, the mountain was closed yesterday. However, the MetService was predicting the storm to clear this morning, for what Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said should be a fantastic weekend on the slopes. He expected the fresh powder to be cold and dry in the morning before softening later in the day. “The spring skiing this year has been excellent. We’ve had a lot of really nice days and it’s been really fun,” he said. In the past 15 weeks since the mountain opened, McKenzie said it has been one of the busiest seasons on record. “We were lucky to have our lifts open from day one and the work that we’d put in upgrading snow machines before the season really paid off,” he said. Staff had noticed numbers starting to drop off over the past couple of weeks as people

The Tinwald Domain development plan has been more than 10 years in the making, but how much of it is ever actioned could come down to who is prepared to pay for the work. In 2007 the Tinwald Domain Reserve Board commissioned landscape design consultants to prepare a plan that would guide development in the future. The first draft was completed in 2010, but the plan, unintentionally, was never adopted by the Ashburton District Council, owners of the
domain. Since then there have been significant developments in the domain and the aspirations of some user groups have changed. The plan has recently been reviewed and on Thursday district councillors took a look at the latest version. One change that received the thumbs up from a user group was the decision to leave the Ashburton Vintage Car Club in its present location. The original plan had been to move the group into the Plains Village in an attempt to co-locate all historic activities in one place.
Club members were outraged. Other changes to the original plan include developing the space around the plains village church to protect its value as a central, public common area, increasing the building area within the village to allow for additional future buildings and constructing the proposed adventure playground closer to the camping ground. Open spaces manager David Askin wanted $250,000 included in the council’s long-term plan for Tinwald Domain work, but it did not make the cut. While he was happy to see
the domain developed, councillor Neil Brown questioned who would pay for the work. “It might be assumed the council will fund this, but assumed by whom? It may be the council, but it may not,” he said. Tinwald was no different to any of the council’s other reserves and in those, the reserve boards largely funded developments, Brown said. “Rakaia came to us three years ago to put in our long-term plan money to build a complex out there and for us to fund it. We said ‘no, you do it’, even though it’s be-
ing built on council land.” The development plan was a living document that would grow and change over many years; it didn’t mean all the work had to be done tomorrow, Askin said. The $250,000 originally requested would have seen $100,000 spent over two years on roading development and then $150,000 spent to move the domain tennis courts, extend the Plains Village and create an extensive walkway around the entire domain, he said. The plan is likely to be adopted at the next council meeting.

On a journey of discovery T
o the casual observer they might be a simple collection of maps, but those maps, carefully stored in Jackie Rapley’s home, tell the story of one of the most significant battles fought by New Zealand soldiers in World War One. They also tell the story of Jackie’s dad, Staff Sergeant Jack (John Stanley), Hughes. He sailed from New Zealand on the HMNZS Waitemata on July 26, 1916 as a 21-year-old knowing little about the horror that would become his life until he returned home in June 1919, three years and 66 days later. The story of his war, he held close, shared brief snippets with his youngest daughter Jackie, but left most of the story of those war years in a box – maps, photographs, medals and service related documents. “He hardly ever talked about it but he did talk a little more to me than to mum and my sister. He talked once about being wounded and walking miles back to the field hospital through dying people,” she said. Curious to know more about the maps and her father’s war story, Jackie took part in an Ashburton Museum workshop, Remembering Your Soldier. That sent her on a voyage of discovery that will see her and son James travel to France later this month to attend the 100th anniversary of the liberation of Le Quesnoy. As Jackie pored over each map she realised the importance of the fine details drawn on each – the landforms, intricate details of each small town, areas of trees, standing or felled. To the officers using those maps clearly marked with battle lines of the Western Front, the details were important for each manoeuvre troops would make. Le Quesnoy was a town of just 3000 people and the more Jackie researched the more she discovered about the town and the years it spent under German occupation. In its liberation 90 New Zealanders and 240 Germans were killed but not one villager was

Staff Sergeant Jack (John Stanley), Hughes harmed. “Apparently the French came out from hiding in their homes and were cheering the Kiwis, even while the fighting was continuing on the outskirts of the town,” Jackie said. “The town is still really enamoured with Kiwis, they just love them and they always celebrate Anzac Day.” As she delved into the past and started peeling back the layers of her father’s war, the value of the material she had stored became clear and she contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the New Zealand Defence Force and those contacts ultimately led to an invitation to attend the 100th anniversary of the liberation in Le Quesnoy on November 4. “I’m just so excited to be going,” Jackie said. Jackie will be just one of three children of soldiers who liberated Le Quesnoy to attend. Her father was 50 when she was born and she knows she’s one of only a few living New Zealanders who can claim a parent who fought in World War One.

Liberation of Le Quesnoy The Germans held Le Quesnoy (near the border of France with Belgium) for almost the entire war, from August 1914 through to its dramatic liberation on November 4, 1918 by the New Zealand Division in what was New Zealand’s last major action of the war. The New Zealanders scaled a ladder set against the ancient walls of the town and took the remaining Germans prisoners. A few days after the libera-

tion of the town, the Armistice ending the First World War was signed in Compiegne, France. The liberation of Le Quesnoy is still anchored in the memory of New Zealanders and the people of the town. Today, the town continues to mark the important role that New Zealand played in its history. Streets are named after New Zealand places, there is a New Zealand memorial and a primary school bears the name of a New Zealand soldier. The liberation of Le Quesnoy was just one of the many campaigns that New Zealanders fought on the Western Front, the line that stretched across northern France and Belgium. The majority of New Zealanders killed in the First World War
lost their lives in the battles that raged there from 1916 to 1918. More than 12,000 New Zealanders died on the Western Front in two and a half years of fighting; this was more than in the entire Second World War. The official commemoration to mark the centenary of the liberation of Le Quesnoy by the New Zealand Division will be held in the township on November 4, 2018. The commemoration is organised in conjunction with the New Zealand Embassy Paris and the New Zealand Defence Force. Public welcome. The centenary will be also commemorated through a series of events leading up to November 4 and culminating in Armistice Day, 2018.

The ribbon is set to be cut on a shiny new home for Mt Somers Fire and Emergency’s 17 volunteers this weekend. Work is complete on an upsized, upgraded station, and fire personnel and community members will be celebrating an official opening on Sunday afternoon. The renovations, finished three months ago, have added around 50 metres of floor space to the original 1957 station, Mt Somers Fire and Emergency secretary treasurer Richard Joseph said. “Prior to now, we had a basic shed which we could just store equipment in. Sometimes you don’t realise how much you’ll use a space until you have it,” he said. Joseph said the extra space has been particularly helpful for training. Following the merger of urban and rural units into the organisation FENZ last year, the training regime has stepped up quite a bit for volunteers, he said. There have been quite a number
of sessions in there already. The extensions also include a new toilet and shower, a large kitchen and on the outside, a public toilet. The building work hasn’t just given volunteers their own space, but caters for the community, Joseph said. It is the last fire station built by Ashburton District Council before the changeover to FENZ was finalised this year. The station will be opened by Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel, FENZ South Canterbury Principal Rural Fire Officer Rob Hands and Mt Somers Fire Chief Leslie Huggins, who is a second generation member. Joseph himself has a daughter in the force, and says there would be others who have volunteered there for 25 years or more. “And we’re always looking for more recruits,” he said. Community members are invited to head to the station at 1.45pm for a 2pm opening on Sunday, and a number of fire volunteers from other units will be attending. The station is located on Pattons Road.

Build consent numbers plunge Ashburton’s building boom could be over with the number of building consents in free-fall. For the year to August 31 the Ashburton District Council had issued 453 consents, down from 674 last year. Numbers have been dropping all year, but in August they hit a new low with just 41 issued compared to 100 in August 2017. Consent numbers peaked most months in 2011/2012, but there were significant

Opportunities to buy, sell and consume liquor in the Ashburton District are almost unlimited, with more than 100 premises holding either on, off or club liquor licences. Thirty of those are licences issued to sport and recreation clubs and 55 to restaurants and cafes. The remainder are off-licences, providing opportunities for the public to buy alcohol to consume elsewhere. This gives the district a ratio of one offlicence for every 1260 people in the district. Those off-licences include hotels, supermarkets, chartered clubs and dedicated bottle stores. Over the past year the Ashburton District Licensing Committee issued 72 new managers’ certificates and renewed 104. Seven new on-licences and five new off-licences were issued. Each of the 112 licence holders is given a risk ranking, determined by the nature of the business, with a fee schedule set according to that ranking. Renewing licences during the year cost businesses more than $10,000 in alcohol licensing fees.

Twins take sporting rivalry seriously Ashburton twins Wendy Watson and Rose Johnson are just as competitive on the putting green as they are on the bowling green. The 70-year-olds are in Oamaru this week for the South Island chartered clubs’ women’s fours tournament, which started on Monday at the Awamoa, Phoenix and Meadowbank Bowling clubs. They are among 172 players who make up the 43 teams at the tournament, being staged for the 28th time. Watson and Johnson both play for the Allenton Bowling Club. With 12 years’ experience under her belt, Watson has six years on her sister. The pair have played with and against each other a lot and both enjoy the friendly rivalry that comes with being twin sisters. “Oh hell yes,” Watson said when asked if they enjoyed competing with and against one another. “I am usually the skip and Rose is the lead. She doesn’t take a blind bit of notice of me, but we do like to see each other do well.” That sibling rivalry extends to golf, a sport they have enjoyed for many years. Both are also avid rugby fans – Watson is firmly in the Crusaders camp and Johnson is a staunch Highlanders supporter. Even the bowls they use are rugby-themed. Johnson’s blue bowls feature the Highlanders logo and Watson’s red bowls a knight on a horse. “We’re rugby nuts – any sport really,” Watson said. Johnson said they loved bowls because of the camaraderie and friendship the sport offered. - NZME

Big decisions needed for Rakaia Anglicans By Sue NewmaN

Members of the wider Rakaia Anglican Parish have some tough decisions to make. With the departure of their minister Al Drye, they are being asked to decide the future of the ministry for the four churches that make up the parish in Rakaia, Barrhill and churches at Dorie and Chertsey. Services are held once a month at each. Joan Clark, archdeacon of Mid Canterbury and vicar of the parish of Ashburton is convening a special meeting at St Mark’s, Rakaia on Monday at 7pm where the future of services in the Rakaia parish will be discussed. The meeting is open to members of the church registered in
the Rakaia parish for not less than two months. Those members will be able to speak and vote at the meeting. “Currently we haven’t got any options to consider. We need to know who the people are and what they want to do,” Clark said. Drye leaves the parish at the end of this month, opting to resign following a resolution by the Anglican synod earlier this year to allow the blessing of same sex marriages. Some of his parishioners have also chosen to leave the church because of that decision. It was important members of the parish came to the meeting and voiced their opinions, Clark said, so the right decision could be made for the future.

Jailed for 900 rapes A Russian paedophile who committed more than 900 rapes and sexual attacks on five underage schoolgirls in his care has been jailed for 22 years and six months. Gold-toothed Viktor Lishavsky, 37, abused the children for whom he was the legal guardian, treating them as his personal harem and sexual slaves. The stepfather admitted his guilt to all charges – but refused to give evidence at his closed-door trial in Komsomolsk-on-Amur in far east Russia, the Daily Mail reports. The former head of an evangelical church in the town of Amursk, he is believed to be the worst convicted paedophile in Russian history. A court in Komsomolsk-onAmur found the “monster” guilty of more than 900 counts of rape and violent sexual acts mostly against girls aged 13 in his care. He will serve his sentence in a strict regime penal colony, after which he will face another two years unable to leave the town where he lives and reporting regularly to police. He was banned from working with children for a further two decades after his release. Lishavsky was caught after a five year reign of sexual terror when one of the girls confided in her foster mother Olga who had been entirely unaware of his abuse, the judge was told. Other victims then corroborated the accusations against him. By day he ran a shoe repair shop but at night he regularly attacked the adolescent girls in his care. Lishavsky and his wife had three children of their own and fostered nine more. He was found guilty of the rape of minors, including acts committed with “particular cruelty”, and forcing his underage victims to commit acts

Further he was found guilty of improper performance of responsibilities for raising a minor along with the cruel treatment with a minor. State prosecutor Tatyana Filatova said: “None of the girls complained because each considered him a father. “Some told each other about what had happened, but they were not in a hurry to complain to their mother. “The children were taken from an orphanage, and none of them wanted to lose their family. “They finally had both a mum and dad. “The terrible details came to the surface only later.
“After discussing everything among themselves, one of the girls said that she was not afraid of her father – and would tell everything to her foster mother. “The mother, in turn, went to the police.” The prosecutor said: “All these years, the adoptive mother did not see anything, because she often was in hospital with her son. “In court, they tried not to go deep into the details of the crimes in order not to further harm the victims.” The hearing was held behind closed doors but a charge sheet showed he had been accused of 248 rapes plus 358 “violent sexual acts” against girls aged 13 or under. He faced another 22 accusations “violent acts of a sexual nature” against girls below the age of 14. Lishavsky committed a further 11 rapes or other brutal sexual attacks in which he
threatened murder or serious harm to health, the court was told. These involved “particular cruelty”, according to the charges. Several other charges relate to torturing the girls and abusing his role as a guardian. Separately, Lishavsky was accused of a further 122 crimes of “a sexual nature with the use of violence, or threat of violence”, and 151 charges of “sexual intercourse taking advantage of the helpless state of the victim” – all these against underage girls between 14 and 17, according to Russian media reports of the case. He “considered the girls to be his personal harem,” according to a report by Ren TV. “With the money that the government paid him as a foster parent, he rented an apartment where he had sex with either one or another foster daughter every other day, or every third day.” - PA

Melania Trump ‘most bullied person’ US First lady Melania Trump says she could be the most bullied person in the world, judging by “what people are saying about me”. She made the remark during a television interview in which she promoted her Be Best initiatives, which take on online bullying. Critics have pointed out that her husband, President Donald Trump, routinely mocks people for their looks and for what he says is a lack of talent or intelligence. “I could say I’m the most bullied person in the world,” Mrs Trump said in the interview segment that aired on Good Morning America. Melania Trump said her Be Best campaign is focusing on social media and online behaviour in part because of “what people are saying about me”. “We need to educate the children of social
emotional behaviour so when they grow up ... they know how to deal with those issues,” she said. The first lady also said there are people in the White House whom she and the president can’t trust. Gomez, who underwent a kidney transplant last year, was then taken to hospital a second time last week as her cell count didn’t go up and “freaked out” when she couldn’t leave. Tomorrow morning (NZ time) he’ll step back out on to the same stage in search of redemption.
I
t has been said that good things come to those who wait. Well, Braden Currie has waited for 12 months. He’s processed the utter heartache of having to take no part in Kona’s Ironman World Championship last year after a flat tyre left him out of the race. He’s processed the fact that in order to win on one of ironman’s biggest, and most gruelling stages, you need to be even better than your normal self. And he’s processed just what it’s going to take to better a field of the best endurance athletes in some of the most testing conditions known to the sport. He’s ready for battle and ready for redemption. And when the former Mount Hutt College student steps up to the starting line tomorrow morning, all that hard work and preparation will be ready to go with him.
Currie has never been backwards in coming forwards. He knows what he wants and has no issue going out and giving it everything to try and get it. But Kona, for Currie, is a different beast altogether. “I think overcoming last year’s Kona, has been a really big challenge [mentally] for me,” Currie said this week in his blog. “I didn’t have the race I wanted and it left me frustrated. Not because of the result, but because of my inability to race. I have since realised that there is so much more to overcome within this race. It is tougher and more gruelling than I considered, and the brutally hot external environment makes it that much harder to race how I normally race. “The athletes you are competing against are absolutely the best in the world and that also makes it that much harder mentally to keep
racing with the confidence that you need to race competitively against a field like this. “So, for me, this year’s race is for now my ultimate challenge. Where it really is that full mix of pushing your physical and mental limits, because there is so much that I have to mentally overcome to achieve this race.” Currie has thrown caution to the wind this time round. He’s wanted to be 100 per cent ready for the challenge and no-one could say he hasn’t done everything within his power to try and be the best possible version of himself when he reaches the starting line this
weekend. He’s uplifted his life, leaving the serenity of his home of Wanaka behind, and has relocated to Australia, and more specifically, Noosa on the Sunshine Coast, in an effort to spend the winter months training in conditions a lot more similar to what you would find in Hawaii at this time of the year, as opposed to the chill of the South Island. He’s also been in Kona for the past few weeks – acclimatising, preparing and adjusting. Swimming has been the main focus of his training. “I have been working a lot on my swim, with my swim coach JR
(John Rogers),’’ he said. “Swimming has just been an evolution for me and I have made huge gains, especially in the last few months. People often ask me how I have become a swimmer, with little-to-no swim background. For me it’s just been about hard work. Lots of time in the pool and thinking strategically about what I am doing in the water, water movement, flow and finding the best ways to catch the water and move through it steadily and as smooth as possible. “I also believe confidence has had a lot to do with it. Just having that kind of belief that I can swim

challenge yet
with the best and putting myself in the situations where I am swimming with the best. That seems to work for me.” The rise of Currie in the world of ironman has been quite incredible. He’s gone from a fantastic multisport career and turned those same skills around to become one of the best over the ironman distance. He won Ironman New Zealand on his debut last year and grabbed the winner’s sash at the finish line of the Asia-Pacific Ironman Championships at Cairns in June. In doing so he beat one of the favourites to win this year’s Kona
crown, Olympic triathlon medallist Javier Gomez. But all the attention of 2018 has been firmly focused on Kona. “I have realised that ironman, and especially Kona, is a sport that requires the ultimate level of dedication. “The athletes that you get to race in this environment are so talented, but also so dedicated and focused. “In my eyes it has gone that step further. You discover more and more, the deeper you become involved in it, about just how dedicated people are. “For me, I love competing in
sport, because of the challenge of testing the notion of what’s possible. “For me, I think it is that physical and mental challenge that you’ve got to overcome when you are competing, especially in a very competitive environment, that I love, that I strive for and that pushes me beyond what I think my personal limits are. “It definitely brings out the best in me whether it is as an athlete or as a person in life.” Tomorrow morning, Currie will line up alongside 55 other competitors. The race begins with a 3.86km
ocean swim course that begins and ends at Kailua Pier. The athletes are not required to wear wetsuits, which can favour the stronger swimmers, like Currie. Next up is a 180.2km road bike ride which climbs to 1772 metres and is most-often described by one word – brutal. This is courtesy of the searing heat, sweat-inducing humidity that hovers around 90 per cent and buffeting crosswinds, which on sections of the course can reach up to 100km/h. The riders travel north on the Kona Coast through scorching lava fields and then along the Kohala Coast to the small village of Hawi,
returning along the same route to transition. Currie’s average speed will sit around 42-46km/h. The marathon course (42.2km) travels through Kailua-Kona and on to the same highway, the Queen Ka`ahumanu, used for the bike course. Athletes then run back into Kailua-Kona, coming down Ali`i Drive to the cheers of thousands of spectators and arriving utterly spent at the finish line. The race begins at 7.35am on Sunday. Methven Rodeo 2018 BY CRAIG WIGGINS Methven rodeo celebrates its 49th year this October with the annual rodeo saddling up their golden jubilee in 2019. The club have an action packed programme featuring cowboys and gals from across New Zealand, from the deep south to the far reaches of Kaitaia. Labour weekend kicks off the new season of the NZRCA circuit with Winchester rodeo on Saturday followed by Methven on Sunday. Competitors compete for prestigious season titles and the kudos from their peers in a sport which requires extreme skill and courage, not only from themselves but their trusty steeds beneath. The event starts from 10am with some open and second division overflow events in the morning. The open programme gets under way after lunch with the bareback, which consistently produces some of the wildest action of the day. You will see cowgirls on fast ponies compete in the open barrel race which has become one of the hottest competitions on the circuit. To cap off the competition cowboys will pit their skills in the open bull ride against some of the toughest and most skilled bulls in
the country. Purpose bred for bucking from using imported genetics, the New Zealand bulls are fast becoming as challenging to stick the 8 seconds as their cousins in the USA. The clubs will be acknowledging the passing of long time national rodeo member Colin Booth whom was best known in the South
Island for contracting Waimate bronc horses. The Methven club has the honour of continuing his legacy with the purchase of 12 horses from the string, most of whom will be seen at both rodeos over Labour weekend. Some of the horses hold prestigious national titles for bucking horse of the year. The

Steak, cheese and mushroom pot pies Serves 4-6 Steak filling 600g Quality Mark stewing steak or gravy beef, cut into bite-sized chunks Salt and freshly ground pepper for seasoning 3T plain flour Oil for frying 1 onion, finely chopped 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2T tomato paste 2C Campbell’s Real Stock – Salt Reduced Beef 250g button mushrooms, chopped 2t brown sugar 1 1/2 C grated carrot 1 celery stick, including leaves 2T chopped fresh thyme 1 bay leaf 1t paprika To assemble Sliced cheese 1-2 sheets frozen flaky puff pastry 1 egg, lightly beaten with 1/4 C milk ■ Preheat oven to 160°C. ■ Steak filling: Season the beef and shake in a bag with the flour to coat. Heat 1T of oil over a high heat in a large deep oven-proof pan. Brown the beef in batches, transfer to a plate and set aside. You may need to add a little more oil for each batch.
■ Add another tablespoon of oil to the pan over a medium heat and add the onion and garlic. Cook for 4-5 minutes to soften. Turn up the heat, add tomato paste and cook, stirring, for another few minutes. Add the stock, mushrooms, sugar, carrot, celery, thyme, bay leaf, paprika and the seared beef. Mix gently to combine. Cover the pan tightly with foil or a lid (or transfer to a casserole dish if your pan isn’t ovenproof) and cook in the oven for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Taste and season with salt and pepper if needed. Leave the mixture to cool slightly then remove the celery stick and bay leaf. ■ Increase the oven to 190°C. ■ To assemble: Fill 4-6 pie dishes with the beef filling, then place a couple of cheese slices on top of each. Top with a circle of pastry, seal and crimp the edges. Brush pastry with the egg wash and prick the top to create steam holes. Bake for about 20 minutes or until the pastry is cooked and golden brown. Cool for 5-10 minutes before serving as they will be very hot. Carpenters, teachers and cafe and restaurant managers may get fasttrack permits to migrate to New Zealand under a new Government proposal. The three groups are among 14 jobs proposed to be added to the Essential Skills in Demand list, which makes it easier for employers to hire workers from overseas. Immigration NZ general manager Stephen Dunstan said adding an occupation to the list meant that employers would not have to show that there were no suitable NZ applicants for jobs, and overseas applicants would be granted work visas. The building industry and teachers’ unions welcomed the proposal in view of severe shortages in both sectors. Master Builders’ Federation chief executive David Kelly said he was “very pleased” that the list includes construction project managers and building associates as well as carpenters, glaziers, plumbers, quantity surveyors and stonemasons. “A lot of the commentary has been around trades skills like carpenters and glaziers, and while that is absolutely true, just as big an issue is those project-managertype roles,” he said. “We need to make sure that we have not just trade skills but people who are running businesses and projects, because that is where a number of the problems start when inexperienced project managers just don’t know how to manage some of the bigger projects.” NZ Educational Institute presi-
dent Lynda Stuart said her union would not oppose adding primary and early childhood education (ECE) teachers to the list. “While we won’t oppose teachers being added to the list for the short term, clearly the quality and sustainability of both primary and ECE workforces are at risk. The ultimate losers will be children and their learning,” she said. She said other solutions could include bringing back bonding schemes for teachers, supporting beginning teachers better and extending student allowances and loan eligibility. The Post Primary Teachers Association said it would also not oppose secondary teachers being added to the list. Hospitality NZ policy and advocacy manager Nadine Mehlhopt said restaurants and cafes would “absolutely” welcome cafe and restaurant managers being added to the list. “It’s something we have been asking for quite some time,” she said. She said it was a misapprehension that “any old body” could run a cafe. “There is some quite sensitive legislation that needs to be adhered to. There is a requirement that they have to adhere to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, the Food Safety Act and now the Health and Safety in Employment Act. “It’s not just dealing with the staff, but also dealing with customers. They have to be able to deal with young people and old people, people who may complain about things.

The resthome sector will also be pleased to see aged-care nurses, although not caregivers, on the proposed list. However, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, which runs Immigration NZ, has not expressed a view on whether any of the 14 new occupations should be added to the essential skills list, and has assessed them all as having only “moderate” evidence of skill shortages. Jobs listed on the Jobs Online index actually declined in the year to June in 10 of the 14 occupations, and increased only for aged care nurses (up 27 per cent), fitters (up 14 per cent), glaziers (up 11 per cent) and wood machinists (up 10 per cent). Immigration NZ granted 4684 essential skills visas to people in the 14 occupations in the year to June, including 1962 carpenters, 1043 cafe and restaurant managers and 708 aged care nurses. The visas granted to aged care nurses represented 240 per cent of the total 284 registered nurses estimated to be employed in aged care, although the ministry noted that this was probably due to classification issues and asked for better information from the industry. – NZME

YouTube is set to give Kiwis a few tips on how to make online content that keeps audiences coming back for more. The company announced this week that it will host official creator workshops around the country, hoping to reach creatives in the regions as well as in larger cities. Speaking to the Herald, YouTube’s content partnerships manager for New Zealand, Daniel Stephenson, said big cities don’t have an exclusive hold on talent. “You don’t have to be based in a central hub and location is indicative of talent,” he said. He said New Zealand has a huge amount of raw talent that would resonate not only in New Zealand but even beyond our borders. “New Zealand already has nine channels with over a million subscribers,” he said. Those channels might already be well established, but there are others who could use a bit of guidance. “One hundred Kiwi YouTube creators now have at least 100,000 subscribers, that’s the point where many turn their content

Next council could be very different O
ur next local government election is still 12 months away, but the drumbeating around town is already starting to intensify. The usual questioning of who’s sticking around and who’s throwing in the towel is starting to become a hot topic of conversation and there’s strong word of the inclusion of a few new names to the mix as well. If these new proposed additions become a reality it will make for a very interesting leadup to voting day next October. Of course, there is still very much a holding pattern when it comes to just how many councillors will be elected around
the table, with appeals on the representation review expected not to be answered until well into the new year. This does make it hard to try and understand what might happen next year at the election, but it is part of the process of such a significant change and one which those who objected are more than justified in making.
So, potentially with or without new names throwing their hats into the ring, we are going to be bidding farewell to some strong names around the big table next to Baring Square. Elections are always an interesting time – there’s a lot of information and opinion to take in and try and understand. It’s the time when everyone tends to push their own barrow more so than that of the public – those elected into seats are usually done so on the basis of their own beliefs which have a positive impact for the community. We have a very strong council table at the moment, particularly in an individual sense.
Yes, there are some strong opinions which often differ from those of the others, but each councillor doing their bit for the Ashburton District has their particular area of strength which is welcomed in the council chambers. The loss of any one of those currently there will have some form of impact on the dynamics of the room and the strength of the representation, but that can often be countered by the introduction of some new blood which may even further enhance the abilities and knowledge available. One thing is certain and that is that this current council has
certainly grown into its shoes nicely over the past 12 months and everyone of those elected at the last election are serving the community well. There’s still progress that can be made, because when isn’t there? But they’re out and about, showing their faces and trying to fight the good fight for the ratepayers and residents of the Ashburton District. And that is really all we can ask for from our elected representatives. That they stand staunch for what the believe in and deal with issues and discussions with strength and confidence.

t seems unlikely young men in future will ever again be encouraged to “sow their wild oats” before settling down to more conventional ways of life. Such activities were once regarded as rites of passage and “essential” to an understanding of the realities of existence. Sexual activity was an integral aspect of such behaviour with the words “promiscuity” and “dissolute” mentioned frequently in dictionary definitions of the expression and, even, by Google. Says President Donald Trump, guilelessly, “It’s difficult for young men these days”. Presumably, by that he means the dangers of sowing such oats pose too great a risk and lead, inevitably to recrimination and censure further down the line. Well, he should know. No doubt the current US president would have sown his wild oats with total disregard for any subsequent repercussions. Indeed, one would have to assume he was still sowing them up to the moment he became US president, and, possibly, beyond. Stormy Daniels may well, even now, feature prominently in his “little black book”. The rash of female accusations made against Trump in the run-up to his election are unlikely all to have been fabrications by women on the make. As Judge Kavanaugh recently found out, to his considerable cost, his sexual exploits as a young student, when he seems to have had the, later, Dr, Christine Ford, firmly in his sights, really did come back to haunt him when Trump’s evil eye fell on him to be the next – for life – Supreme Court judge. The suggestion Dr Ford, distinguished academic as she subsequently became, should have made false accusations against the judge, however long ago the action took place, seems to me so plainly ridiculous as to aggravate the judge’s guilt and the president’s tacit acceptance of it. In truly awful Trump style he talks – after she has given her evidence – of how credible a witness she was yet, a mere three days later, rubbishes her, even to the extent of making fun of her voice and answers. So, after an embarrassingly inadequate show of diligence on

PRESS COUNCIL the part of the under-instruction, FBI, Kavanaugh is exonerated, gets the nod, and Dr Ford goes home probably to rue the day she still thought “honesty the best policy”. Since then the execrable Trump has “apologised” to the people of the US on Kavanaugh’s behalf for the treatment he received, to which the beleaguered judge replies with a gushing outburst of thanks and praise. Thus ends this miserable episode of current American history in Trump’s divided nation. Where to next? Will it affect the outcome of the mid-term election or will the Trump blusterings have put the Democrats to the sword as they did the noble, but doomed, Dr Christine Blasey Ford. If Kavanaugh’s torrid experience is anything to go by, any suggestion that sowing one’s oats remains a policy to be nurtured and developed should now, without reservation, be consigned to the green bin of history. I’m sure he would agree uninhibited sexual licence as a young man should no longer lead to a shrug of the shoulders from friends and family and the over-used “blessing”, “Boys will be boys”. Times ... they are a changing. Later News Just announced, the resignation of the feisty Nikki Haley as the US representative at the United Nation.
What byzantine scheming is behind that, I wonder. Trump at once suggesting First Daughter, Ivanka, should take on the role, though worried he might be accused of “nepotism”. Except by the biddable Fox News, that seems more than likely! Meanwhile, back here, where parliamentary politeness and the dignity of the House are still preserved, if a trifle precariously, by Mr Speaker, the distinguished Trevor Mallard, the unwise use of the word, “embarrassing” by National leader, Simon Bridges to describe the problems besetting one of his MPs, Jami-Lee Ross, has caused a furore of outrage and expletives from his colleagues. In fact, Bridges realised the “unwisdom” of his comment the moment he made it but, alas, too late to withdraw. Ross is said to be “p..s.d off” by his leader’s comment which, for Bridges, is very bad news as he struggles to establish himself as a real alternative to Jacinda Ardern by the time next election comes round. The abrupt demise of Andrew Little as leader of the Labour Party shortly before the 2017 election in favour of Jacinda is a constant and spine-chilling reminder to Bridges of what can happen. In that regard, the sooner he breaks his obsession with finding out who “ leaked” details of his early expenses showing his flag round the nation, the more
likely he is still to be waving it when we all go to the polls in 2020. Otherwise, he, too, is vulnerable to either the benign coup, as deliberately self-inflicted by Little or the more brutal variety involving back-stabbing and knives in the night. The Ross temporary resignation has produced a rather different reaction from a certain Rodney Hide, the once leader of the Act Party – Remember him? He is indignant the people of Botany should suddenly be deprived of their MP and left unrepresented in Wellington while the member takes a long break from his parliamentary duties – on full pay – (“embarrassing” or otherwise) without so much as a “By your leave”. I can see his point. Now comes news of the Government’s remarkable $5.5M surplus, despite their appearing to have lavished cash on all and sundry in an entirely uninhibited manner since they first set foot in the corridors of power. It’s really quite an achievement. Hardly surprising then the grin on Robertson’s features makes the Cheshire Cat look glum. Brea claims silver
Methven triathlete, Brea Roderick has capped off an incredible week at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires with a silver medal in the mixed triathlon team event. Roderick was one half of a Kiwi duo who combined forces with an Australian pair of triathletes to finish in second position behind a strong Europe quartet who took the gold. Dubbed the KiwiRoos on both the New Zealand and Australian Olympic twitter pages, the foursome were being hailed on both sides of the Tasman for their efforts yesterday morning (New Zealand time). Roderick and Dylan McCullough raced alongside Aussie combo Josh Ferris and Charlotte Derbyshire. They crossed the line in 1h 26m 32s, just 20s behind winners Europe 1, which included athletes from Portugal, Holland, Italy and Switzerland. Europe 3 finished a further 2m 47s back. The Oceania combination were an outside chance for a medal, after their individual results from earlier in the week saw them ranked sixth heading into the race. “On paper, they were a lot better than us,” McCullough admitted. “We put on our A-game today and it paid off – silver, we’re stoked.” The triathlon saw all four athletes complete a 0.3km swim, 6.3km bike ride and a 2.1km run.

After this week, the six sides will play another two rounds next week before one final round at the end of the month with the top two teams then competing for the final – and the title – that same afternoon.

Cash payment scandal A government witness at a college basketball corruption trial testified yesterday that he made a secret $40,000 payment to the inner circle of a North Carolina State recruit through an assistant coach at the school. Recruitment facilitator Thomas TJ Gassnola told a jury he delivered the money in cash to the coach, Orlando Early, on a trip to North Carolina, in 2015. The coach told him he was going to give it to a personal trainer for point guard Dennis Smith Jr as a way to get it to Smith’s family. - PA

Open grade tennis returns to the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre for the 2018/19 season on Saturday, with a mixture of new and old faces set to take to the court. Six teams will contest this year’s A grade competition, and five teams have entered in A reserve, although Mid Canterbury Tennis hoped to add another team in a few weeks’ time when students returned to the district from university, Mid Canterbury Tennis’ Tony Brosnahan said. One notable new face among the A grade teams this year was Cameron McCracken, a top North Canterbury player who had been attracted to play in Mid Canterbury by the level of competition, Brosnahan said.

McCracken was set to play at number one in a Tinwald side which also featured a past Gala Cup (Mid Canterbury championship) winner Peter Leonard at number two, Henrik Tawatao at three and Mary-Anne Martin at four. Martin was just one of two women in A grade this season, along with Erin Connelly-Whyte, who would play number four for a Hampstead side led by Aidan Mitchell. Connor Brosnahan would play two for Hampstead withMichael Kerr at three. Brosnahan at two was likely to set up an intriguing battle at some stage this season, with his dad – Tony Brosnahan – also playing again this season, at number two for Southern. According to New Zealand Tennis configure rankings, the younger Brosnahan was ranked just ahead of his dad. Southern was set to be led by Jason Feutz at one – although he was away and set to miss round one – with Mathieu Lucas, Aidan Watt and Gareth Evans rounding out the team. The battle of the Brosnahans was not the only father-son match-up likely to occur this season though, with Tyler Leonard listed at two for Fairton, which meant when Fairton took on Tinwald he was likely to come up against his dad Peter. This time around though the New Zealand Tennis configure rankings had the older family member ranked higher. Tyler Leonard was set to pair up with another multiple Gala Cup singles champion in Rhys Cromie for doubles, with Cromie the Fairton side’s number one, while the evergreen Phil Crozier was set to play yet another season at number three, and John Leslie at four. Cromie – who was not likely to feature at the start of the season as he was nursing a hamstring injury – had been the shining star in Mid Canterbury tennis circles in recent years, earlier this year pick-

ter Kirwan at two, Lee Gilbert at three, and Josh Jones and Henry Ross rounding out the side. Dargue would also miss this weekend’s opening match though, as he was away. Among the name players missing from teams this season were Neil McCann, who was injured, and past Gala Cup singles champions Tessa McCann and Flynn Ness, who were playing club tennis elsewhere. Competition will get under way this weekend with Allenton taking on Hampstead, setting up a likely top singles match featuring Sam Bubb and Aidan Mitchell, and a match-up between Andre van Rooyen and Connor Brosnahan at number two. Southern will take on Fairton, while Methven and Tinwald will meet in the other two encounters. This season the Gala Cup championships will be contested over the weekend of March 16 and 17 next year, but the first big tournament of the season at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre was only a week away. The Ashburton Trust Junior Open was being held at Labour weekend as per usual, with play set to get under way on the Saturday and wrap up on the Monday. Entries for the tournament closed on Thursday night.

New Superbike format The World Superbike championship (WorldSBK) will debut a new three-race format in next year’s season-opening round at Phillip Island. The series has used a two-race format – one on Saturday afternoon and one on Sunday – for each round since its inaugural season in 1988. But from next year, a third sprint race will be held on Sunday morning. “World superbikes is always about action ... lots and lots of back-to-back racing,” Phillip Island circuit chief Fergus Cameron said. “This threerace initiative from (governing body) Dorna and the teams is sensational.” - AAP

I have got to know many of them personally and always enjoy helping them. What’s your back story, where do you hail from, your working career? Born in Leeston but Ashburton has been my home most of my life. What exciting experiences have you enjoyed while working in your role? Everything. Never a dull day at the Guardian. Have there been any embarrassing moments in your working career? This was not embarrassing, just funny. A young man had just made an appearance in front of the judge and he came to tell me the judge had got it wrong as he didn’t do it! He rushed into the Guardian office and announced he would set his dog on me if it was reported in the paper. I didn’t react the way he wanted and this annoyed him more so he rushed out to his vehicle to get the dog. He proceeded to put the dog through the door of the office but the dog was happy to see me and furiously wagged his tail. Best piece of advice ever given to you? Not to be impulsive, think about the situation

Sean Carter hasn’t had to turn to too many motivational oneliners for his Mid Canterbury Heartland side this week ahead of their must-win clash against King Country today at the Ashburton Showgrounds. Carter’s charges know that their fate is in their own hands when they run out onto the paddock this afternoon and they are also aware that there’s potentially a bit of making up to be done for some ordinary efforts in recent weeks. A hapless loss to Buller was a real breaking point for the team seven days ago, and there was some serious soul-searching done when the team re-grouped on Tuesday night for their first training of the week. “We had a pretty big debrief session where we asked some pretty tough questions of the boys,” Carter said. “It was largely around roles and responsibilities when we’re out on the paddock, things that are being missed really. “We’ve got a great bunch of guys, but at the end of the day, we, as coaches, can only do so much to prepare them, there’s a certain element to it where it becomes their responsibility to be ready for the battle. “It’s not easy though. “These guys aren’t professionals, they’re juggling work and everyday life and then having to turn around on a Saturday and get into this combatant mode for every big challenge – it’s tough. “But they know what they have to do, they’re well aware.” Mid Canterbury’s equation today is pretty simple. A win will almost certainly secure them a spot in the Lochore Cup playoffs, but a loss could spell the end of their season. Should the result not go the way of Mid Canterbury, then they would need to rely on Buller beating Poverty Bay and Wairarapa Bush beating North Otago to see them remain safe.

Those permutations aren’t really at the forefront of anyone’s minds heading into today though, four or five points for a victory today is, naturally, the optimal result. But King Country will be a tough ask. They’ve fought it out with some of the heavyweights of the Heartland Championship all season, and often came out on top, and a loss for them this weekend could result in a demotion from Meads Cup down into the Lochore Cup for the beginning of the knockout stages next week. “They are a very good side and coached really well. “Their results have been excel-
lent all year and they deserve to be in the position they are – we’re going to have to play to our full potential if we are going to beat them.” Carter and his assistant Dale Palmer have opted for a largely familiar starting line-up for the match, with only a few changes. Jarred Percival comes back into the side and will wear the fullback jersey, with Nathan McCloy retaining the No. 10 spot. Brian Matoramusha gets back into the starting line-up on the wing. Tyler Blackburn, who has filled a midfield role at points during the season has been given the nod at halfback. “Tyler has been playing really well all season, he’s a fantastic defensive weapon and is so strong over the ball.
“For the way he plays, he’s perfect for us in this match I think and Tig (Will Mackenzie) will provide some real experience off the bench.” In the forward pack the tight five remains unchanged from last week while Tom Blyth takes the blindside flanker role, with Angus Lindsay moving to openside flanker and the explosive Seta Koroitamana in the No. 8 spot. Carter said the side had prepared for both variations of the weather this week and had game plans for all potential outcomes. “The weather is supposed to clear, but it could end up being quite a tight game, so we’ve put a bit of emphasis on that this week.” The match kicks off at 2.30pm this afternoon.

Family first for Lima Lima Sopoaga admits he went to school to play rugby and eat his lunch. He saw the sport as his ticket to potentially making a better life. So when the opportunity to accept a lucrative offer to continue his career in England arose, he made the decision to do what was best for his family – leaving the All Blacks dream behind. Sopoaga said the contract could change not just his own life, but a few lives. “To come over here, to uproot my partner [Miriam] and daughter [Milla, aged one] was a very big decision,” he said. “But in the long run, it will be the right one. “Guys in New Zealand who are second or third string, we’re not getting paid the same as the Beauden Barretts. “I fell into that category, I’ve no qualms about it, that’s the way it goes. “Now, if I’m smart and make the right choices, if I’m not buying stupid cars and stuff like that, this money will be put to good use … Who wouldn’t want that for their family? “Things were tight at home and I can remember times when Mum and Dad struggled. But we got through, our house was filled with love. “I’m not just playing for myself over here, it’s about making a better life for my family, making Mum and Dad’s life a bit easier, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews.” Sopoaga left New Zealand at the end of this year’s Super Rugby season with 16 test caps for the All Blacks and 88 matches for the Highlanders to take up a two and a half-year deal with Wasps, reportedly worth £1.5m. “If someone had said to me when I was eight years old that I was going to play 16 times for the All Blacks, starting twice, that would have been enough for me. “I got to do what many people walking this Earth aren’t able to do, that’s to achieve their dreams.” - NZME

But there’s a local hope in tomorrow’s Methven Cup, who isn’t really in the mix for Trotting Cup glory next month, who will be hoping he can upstage some of the more favoured runners on the green top. His name, James Dean. The Rakaia pacer, trained by Leo O’Reilly, will be just one of many lightweight chances in tomorrow’s Group Three event and will go head-to-head with a number of horses who are considered to be the leading Cup contenders. His six wins and $55,000 in stake earnings might pale in comparison to rival Ultimate Machete who has won 12 and more than $800,000, but the grass is a great leveller, and O’Reilly knows that there was an opportunity missed in the race last year when things went pearshaped at the start. James Dean was checked by another runner and galloped away which left him behind some serious horses, but he staged a mammoth recovery to finish a very impressive fifth behind Titan Banner. Tomorrow that bad luck of 12 months ago is hopefully going to be left behind and O’Reilly is hoping that things go a little more to plan.
An impressive Methven workout last weekend told the talented horseman all he needed to know ahead of this week’s fresh-up assignment. And that’s that the horse is ready to rock and roll. “It was a really good run for him and he has come through it strongly,” O’Reilly said. “He needed a decent hit-out and got that so he’s ready to go.” O’Reilly and the owners of the pacer, Dean Harrison and James Reardon made the decision late last year to geld the horse, which he said took some time to get over. “He lost a lot of weight and has only really just put it back on. “We gave him a spell and it seems to have done him the world of good. “He feels nice and strong this time around.” The wet weather late in the week might have been putting some concern into the minds of rival trainers, but O’Reilly wasn’t too concerned on Friday because of James Dean’s staying nature. “He won’t mind the sting out of it, he’ll just keep trucking.” O’Reilly has three other horses engaged at the meeting alongside James Dean and all three appear each-way hopes. Flyingmasterwilliams and Shadow Minister were both placed at the September meeting on the track, while Sounds Like A Gem was an impressive winner and could get a slice of an evenlooking line-up in the last of the day.

Vaughans Road green waste drop-off After consultation with the Methven Community Board, opening hours at the Vaughans Road green waste drop-off site in Methven will change. •
The site will be open on Wednesday from 12:30pm to 2:30pm (instead of 2pm to 4pm) effective 24 October, 2018 onwards.

This allows for a more efficient use of staff between Methven and Rakaia as currently, the two sites’ opening hours overlap on a Wednesday. There is no change to the opening time at the Rakaia Resource Recovery Park which is Wednesday at 3:30pm.
