An Ashburton vet has been awarded just over $23,000 for unjustified dismissal, although her former employer says the company still considers itself a fair and reasonable employer. Kasia Chapman-Labecka received one month’s notice after she was made redundant from her part-time position at Vetlife’s Ashburton and Methven clinics in December 2015 and she was not selected for a remaining part-time role at the company’s Ashburton clinic. She had been employed by the company since 2003. Vetlife managing director Adrian
Campbell told the Employment Relations Authority that 2015 was a difficult year for the company. That had a long-term impact on the business, he said. Due to the challenging economic conditions, Vetlife assessed the operation of all 18 of its clinics and head office in order to identify ways to reduce and manage costs within the business, including staff costs.

Vetlife interviewed both employees for a remaining part-time companion vet role at the company’s Ashburton clinic and gave the job to the other employee.
