Flying ahead of his peers, Ryan Jackson is on track to get his pilot’s licence.

The Ashburton College student has recently started flying solo and hopes to get his private pilot’s licence soon.

Jackson has recently turned 17 and is now eligible to get his licence, but he started flying when he was 16.

“I started because I just thought it would be a cool idea,” he said.

To get a private pilot’s licence, candidates have to first be over 17 and need to pass six exams, a medical test and gain a number of hours flying with both

an instructor and alone. However, once someone gets their licence, they can do anything, even take their friends up for a ride – as long as it’s not commercial.

Tracy Palmer, a pilot at Skydiving Kiwis and Jackson’s instructor at Mid Canterbury Aero Club, said he was on track to get his licence.

He said Jackson has been learning to fly in a PA-28 Cherokee, which is a single engine, four-seater, training aircraft.

Jackson has done about 10 hours’ flying with an instructor and after he passed his medical exam, Palmer said he sent him flying solo.

restricted licence, but it happened about a week after because of the cost of the medical exam,” Palmer said.

Getting a private pilot’s licence is no cheap undertaking, an hour of flying costs about $200, so altogether it can cost between $13,000 and $15,000.

But Jackson is funding his own way with a part-time job at New World.

He hopes to start studying for his exams over Christmas and eventually go on to be a pilot flying jets for Air New Zealand.

But for now the teenager, who doesn’t know anyone else his age who flies, said he just enjoys the freedom of flying.

Finding solutions for housing

Economists and property investors are calling on local authorities to step up to the plate and play a part in tackling New Zealand’s housing crisis.

They’ve issued a challenge to newly-elected mayors to lead the way in tackling social housing options and homelessness.

Mayor elect Donna Favel said she was aware of anecdotal reports of housing issues in Ashburton.

“I have been told of some people who are sleeping in cars parked in driveways, others sleeping in car garages, however, I’m not aware of the back story of these people and what their relationship with WINZ or other housing providers is like,” she said.

Through the media reports Favel said she understood some social agencies were dealing with an average of two cases each week of people who were unable to find somewhere to live.

She believes the issue of social housing belongs with central rather than local government.

“The Christchurch City Council recently entered a joint venture with a service provider but this was not the decision of the Ashburton council in recent months.”

While the council was not involved with social housing, Favel said it did provide more than 100 elderly units that were rented to people over 65 who met the qualifying criteria. There were currently 27 people on the waiting list for a unit. These units are self supporting with rentals covering maintenance.

While Ashburton was several steps away from the dire housing situation facing larger centres,

more needed to be done to ensure every person in the Ashburton District had a warm, dry place to live Presbyterian Social Services manager Jackie Girvan said.

She doesn’t believe the council should be pouring rates money into providing a pool of community housing, rather she sees its role as an enabler through incentives to developers, benefactor trusts or social agencies by gifting land, reducing rates and axing fees.

“I’d welcome any input and I’d welcome anything the council could do to work with people who are interested in this space.”

Ashburton might not have the depth of housing issues that larger centres had but there was still a significant need across several areas, she said.

For older people there was a need for houses where they could live in a flatting situation and for stand-alone rental units as there was a growing number of people who did not qualify for the council’s units but who couldn’t afford to buy their own home or pay market rentals, Girvan said.

Accommodation for families was always in short supply and waiting lists for Housing New Zealand properties were long. That meant this was always an area of need, but the district’s greatest need was for boarding house style accommodation, for single men, she said.

A boarding house where renters had their own room but shared kitchen facilities and where an evening meal was possibly provided would fill a large and growing gap in the accommodation market, Girvan said.

This style of accommodation could also be useful for casual workers.

Free computing classes big hit Ara Institute’s free computing classes are a big hit in Ashburton.

The free, flexible programmes that started yesterday allow people to learn at their own pace, whether they are firsttime computer users wanting to improve their job prospects or intermediate users wanting to upskill.

Classes on the first day went well, with a mix of learners under the supervision of facilitator Tracy Price.

Some were improving their skills with jobs in mind, others were just wanting to keep up

with newer versions of Word or Excel, and others just wanted to learn about web design or programmes like Photoshop.

Ara is trying to re-engage adult learners in the region and support growth through targeted, accessible training.

Ara, a merger of CPIT and Aoraki Polytechnic, wants to improve access to its programmes and the free computing courses are being held at the Ashburton campus on Alford Forest Road.

The institute says Canterbury has a shortage of skilled ICT workers and some people need to upskill for their job or to take

the next step in their career.

Computing for Free manager Peter Nock said there were a range of self-paced, short courses of between 20 to 40 hours to introduce people to specific programmes such as Powerpoint. “However, we also offer business and job-seeking courses, and the National Certificate in Computing, which is a formal qualification that employers recognise and value.”

The timetables for the programmes are flexible to fit around family and professional commitments, with daytime, evening and weekend classes.

Little Brain gym class shaping new minds By noah graham A gym class is helping caregivers gain some relaxation time or a chance to get fit.

The Little Brain Gym is held at the EA Networks Centre every week from Tuesday to Thursday from 9.15am until 10.15am and allows parents an hour of child-free time.

Little Brain Gym facilitator Janet Lloyd said the class takes children between the ages of two and five for an hour and, depending on the theme of the week, teaches colours, numbers, emotions, the bones in the human body and a chance to blow off some of their energy.

The Little Brain Gym have evolved from focusing just on the child’s fitness to now also focusing on educating them.

Lloyd said the class was open to anybody with a small child and allowed them to have an hour to themselves to swim, practice yoga or any other activity at the facility.

She said there was understandably concern from some parents leaving their child while they went off on their

own for an hour but after they sat through a session of her with the children they were happy to.

Mother of two Kirsten Townsend dropped her children off at the Little Brain Gym yesterday while she practised yoga and said it was a “great”.

“We love it and the kids love it.”

The course has run for more than a year and was free to the caregivers as long as they were registered with the EA Networks Centre.

Lloyd said she hoped to expand the class further and have more caregivers come along.

Arthritis affects young as well

A 14-year-old Geraldine girl is changing people’s perceptions about arthritis being an ‘old people’s disease’.

Yesterday marked World Arthritis Day and Tessa Orange wants people to know she doesn’t let it hold her back.

Over 620,000 across New Zealand have an arthritis diagnosis of some sort.

Within that number, over 1000 are children.

There is currently no cure for the over 140 types of arthritis, which can affect people at any age or time.

Cathie Orange, her mother, said she was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) at four years old.

She said JIA has an unknown cause but presents itself in Tessa causing her joint pain and when

Tessa Orange she was younger, limiting her mobility.

Orange said they first noticed the arthritis in her fingers and after seeing their paediatrician they were sent up to the Hutt Valley Hospital, in Wellington, to see the rheumatology centre, which services both the North and South Island for arthritis specialists.

Tessa is now on a number of medications to help her get through the day, including a daily anti-inflammatory medication and a weekly injection, which Tessa now does herself.

Orange said most people wouldn’t know Tessa, who now plays hockey, even has arthritis.

Tessa said initially she was worried about taking up hockey because it was in the cold on Friday nights.

“But I just decided to take a stab in the dark and it’s been going well,” Tessa said.

Orange said Tessa still wakes up stiff in the morning and takes a bit to get going.

“We had a lot of difficulty in those early years before we had her on the right medication,” she said.

When Tessa was younger she was stiff in her joints and couldn’t run properly.

“At one point she had 11 injections at once,” Orange said.

Some early medications even made Tessa sick, causing her to vomit and feel nauseous, she said.

Orange said the support they’ve received has been amazing, all Tessa’s medication is fully funded and the Government even paid for flights up to Wellington to go to the arthritis specialists.

“There’s been a whole team looking after her, we’re pretty lucky really.

“We’ve had so much support over the years,” she said.

Tessa is going up to Wellington this weekend to attend a youth camp, where she will be an ambassador to other young people like herself.

“I’m excited about the camp, it’s going to be good to share my experiences with newly diagnosed people,” she said.

Local player faces charges New Zealand Rugby (NZR) is facing another off-field headache after a member of the Mid Canterbury team was left facing charges following an incident in Gisborne this month.

A police spokeswoman told the Herald a player in his 20s was arrested on October 2 and charged with assault with intent to commit rape. He is due to appear before the Gisborne District Court on October 31.

It is understood the incident occurred the day after Mid Canterbury played East Coast in Ruatoria.

NZR was said to be aware of the matter while Mid Canterbury Rugby Union chief executive Ian Patterson said he would not comment on matters before the court.

The incident continues what has been a tumultuous time for rugby off the field.

NZR last month came under criticism for its handling of the Chiefs' stripper saga, after an investigation into the matter uncovered no evidence to support claims made by a woman who performed for the team at an end-of-season function.

The sport once more found itself in the spotlight following the Losi Filipo assault case, with the Wellington junior discharged without conviction after injuring two men and two women.

And All Blacks halfback Aaron Smith was last week banned for one match following a tryst with a woman in a disabled bathroom at Christchurch Airport. The player is still to face a disciplinary process.

Holy Name church repair coming to an end

The Holy Name Catholic Church in Ashburton is one step closer to opening its doors to congregations again. Scaffolding around the inside of the brick building is being taken down, along with the plastic sheeting around the place. The building was closed last month to allow builders in to paint and refurbish the plaster in the building, which suffered internal cracks. The church, which opened in 1931 and has a New Zealand Historic Places Trust category 1 status, was last painted 50 years ago. Father Geoff Gray said the painting was complete and all that remains is removing the rest of the scaffolding and giving the place a good clean. He said they hope to have it open by October 22 or 23.

Bees swarm gym In the space of 10 minutes, 8000 bees swarmed outside a gym in Hastings yesterday afternoon.

Beekeeper, Kevin Tinker, was called to the gym when members of the gym looked outside and noticed thousands of bees swarm outside the window. Gym manager, Elisa Morrison, said: “At the start there was 1000 but literally just 10 minutes later there was around 8000. Members of the gym could not leave. Some were actually freaking out. The beekeeper had to go away and get another box, but luckily the bees all seemed to gravitate towards the fence.”

Local economic growth slows

Tourism and construction are the two lynchpins that have sustained economic growth in the Ashburton District for the year to June 30.

Data provided by Infometrics shows the district’s GDP over that period grew by 1.1 per cent, compared to the national economy’s growth of 2.7 per cent. The district’s GDP peaked at 8.3 per cent in the year to September 2012.

Economic commentators de-

scribed the district’s economy as “struggling over recent quarters”, with statistics showing retail spending and car sales had fallen.

For the year to June 30 the district’s GDP was $1.827 million.

As the economic growth in the district slowed, the numbers on jobseeker support had risen by 13 per cent. The district’s unemployment rate, however, remains very low at 2.1 per cent. Canterbury’s rate is 3.2 per cent while the national rate is 5.2 per cent.

“The increase in the number

of jobseeker support recipients is unsurprising given dairy farming’s malaise over the past couple of years. Nevertheless, the increase in joblessness must be put in perspective as it comes off a very low base and Ashburton’s unemployment rate remains the sixth lowest among New Zealand’s territorial authorities,” the commentators said.

Dairy farming accounts for about 17 per cent of the district’s GDP, sheep and beef farming contribute about 7.7 per cent and meat processing a further

4.9 per cent.

Positive changes over the quarter were; house sales rose 8.9 per cent, house prices up 5.1 per cent and guest nights up 13 per cent.

While the number of vehicle registrations in the district may have dropped over the year to Junev 30, traffic volumes increased by 2.1 per cent.

Parliament needed better politics and he said he would take every opportunity to make it more accountable and more effective.

Coates is replacing list MP Kevin Hague who resigned to become head of Forest and Bird. An economist and one of the leading Auckland activists against the Trans Pacific Partnership, Coates has been appointed Green spokesman for trade, which he touched on in his speech.

“We need better alternatives to these unbalanced treaties,” he said. “Small gains through tariff reductions should not be used as a Trojan horse to allow foreign investors to sue governments.” Coates is also spokesman for internal affairs, commerce and consumer affairs, ministerial services and overseas development assistance. - NZME

Crowbar, not gun

Police believe the person who interrupted a Saturday morning tobacco raid on a Methven store was threatened with a crowbar.

At 4am on Saturday morning the Methven Mobil Service Station and the SuperValue Supermarket were targeted in break-ins to steal tobacco.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said it was first thought a firearm was presented at the witness, but now Police believe the item was a crowbar.

“However the risk to the witness is still real and it shows yet again what criminals are prepared to do while attempting to achieve their purpose,” Senior Sergeant Banfield said.

A number of other stores across the district have also been hit in similar raids, including the Rakaia Four Square and a Tinwald Business.

Police advice to any person in a situation that interrupts or is involved in such an event is to keep themselves as safe as they can and wherever possible remove themselves from the immediate scene and contact police.

Senior Sergeant Banfield said people should let Police investigate and apprehend potentially violent offenders.

Euthanasia submissions heard A woman who recovered from Stage 3 cancer has warned MPs against legalising euthanasia, saying that seriously ill patients are not capable of making rational decisions about dying.

Parliament’s Health Committee is investigating public attitudes towards voluntary euthanasia in response to a petition by former Labour MP Maryan Street.

In hearings held yesterday at Parliament, MPs heard several highly personal submissions.

One submitter, Wellington lawyer Bernadette Scanlon, told MPs she was “not unfamiliar with death”, having lost a brother to cancer before being diagnosed with cancer herself.

During her second round of

chemotherapy, the 28-year-old said she was often “hugely vulnerable” and “mentally weak”.

“I recall feeling utterly helpless, physically awful and alone.

I hated the situation I was in, a situation I couldn’t escape from.

This mindset unfortunately has continued from time to time, post-treatment, when I get a bad result, when I compare my current life to where I expected it to be, or when I look at my friends’ lives.

“During all these points of time, had the choice of death actually been available, for once in my life, I may have taken it into consideration.

“And that is exactly what I didn’t need or actually want.

“And that is the exact type of

person who you as a committee don’t want to capture.”

Scanlon, who is now in remission, said others in the same situation might be more vulnerable than her.

“By condoning death as being an acceptable solution to a problem, we will shift the moral standpoint for a number of highly vulnerable patients.”

She concluded by saying that death “should always be left as an outcome, not as a medicallyadministered and legally-condoned choice”.

Another submitter, Wairarapa woman Tracey van de Raaij, gave a contrasting view.

She said she supported a law change because of an experience several years ago in which

she witnessed the aftermath of her neighbour’s suicide.

The terminally ill man took his own life after a struggle with cancer, and van de Raaij said she was asked by emergency services to assist her distraught neighbour.

“I turned up at the house to a very distraught neighbour and a naked man covered in blood and under bodily fluids.”

After the incident, her neighbour was treated like a criminal, van de Raaij said.

The Health Committee has received 22,000 submissions.

In a rare move, it has agreed to hear from every person who asked to make an oral submissions - around 1800 people.

Police call for more recruits Dozens of potential Head Hunters recruits are turning up in Auckland each month for training, the head of the Police Association has warned.

Greg O’Connor said along with rising gang numbers and activity, police officers were reporting that methamphetamine was now rife, and easier to get than cannabis in some areas.

The long-serving Police Association president didn’t hold back in his last address to the association’s annual conference in Wellington yesterday.

With Police Minister Judith Collins sitting beside him, O’Connor slammed the Government for not increasing police resourcing, and in particular, police numbers.

Proactive policing of gangs was reducing, O’Connor told the audience.

“A very good example when I talk about organised crime is the Head Hunters, their numbers have gone from 135 to 275 patched and prospects in just the last two years.

“I am reliably informed that each month up to 70 new recruits front up in Auckland. It sounds like their training budget is better than police’s.”

Police were not looking for anyone else in connection to the shooting.

Locals reported seeing up to five police cars heading to the remote town.

Police say they responded to the incident and the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter Service was called to the scene.

Hawke’s Bay Rescue Helicopter Trust marketing and fundraising manager Laura Hyde said it

turned back “because unfortunately the patient died”.

A resident said a number of police cars and officers had been in the area, and an ambulance had also been at the scene.

“It will be pretty tight lipped for a while, I would say,” said the woman.

One woman said she had seen five police cars heading towards Mohaka and that locals were saying there had been a shooting.

She said an ambulance also left, but later returned.

The police cars sped past about 11.30am yesterday, she said.

The creepy clown craze has hit the University of Auckland campus.

A clown with what appears to be a painted face, complete with a menacing smile and red nose, was caught peering out from behind a shelf at the university’s library.

The terrifying scene was caught on camera by a student and posted to the “Overheard @ University of Auckland” Facebook group. The video has more than 500 likes and 200 comments, with commenters advising other students to stay away from the library and expressing their fear of the clown.

The creepy clown phenomenon has spread across the world.

Date for Filipo appeal A date has been set for the High Court appeal of Wellington rugby player Losi Filipo’s discharge without conviction for assault.

Police will on October 26 ask the High Court for leave for an appeal of that sentence and, if that’s granted, will make their case for an appeal on the same day. The public and media backlash led to Filipo withdrawing from the Wellington squad, and to the winger and the union mutually agreeing to terminate his contract.

Donation an error?

Jewellery with a value of $16,000 has been dropped off at a charity shop in Whanganui. A woman had dropped in a parcel of stuff and told staff it was a donation for the mission. But staff believe the jewellery was included in error. “When we opened it one of the staff immediately knew it was valuable” said shop manager Michelle Wilson. She doesn’t think the donation was deliberate, given the way the jewellery was packaged. Three experts have examined the jewellery and agreed on an estimated value of $16,000.

Father/son in fatal NI shooting The men alleged to be involved in a fatal shooting at an isolated rural community were father and son, according to close family friends.

Friends spoke to the Herald on the condition of anonymity. They said they were first on the scene after hearing a gunshot at a Mohaka address about 11am yesterday.

Police have confirmed that a 43-year-old man died at the address and that a 62-year-old man was arrested.

Haitians wait for aid People throughout Haiti’s devastated southwest peninsula formed makeshift brigades to clear debris and try to regain some semblance of their pre-hurricane lives as anger grew over the delay in aid for remote communities more than a week after the Category 4 storm hit.

A community group in the southern seaside community of Les Anglais began clearing tree limbs from streets and placing them into piles while others gathered scraps of wood to start rebuilding homes.

The scene repeated itself across small seaside and mountain villages dotting the peninsula, where people pointed out helicopters buzzing overhead and questioned why they haven’t received any help.

Israel Banissa, who lives near the small mountain town of Moron, said a Red Cross assessment team stopped outside his village to ask people questions but didn’t leave any supplies.

“There’s no aid that’s come here,” he said.

The UN humanitarian agency in Geneva has made an emergency appeal for nearly $120 million in aid, .

UN officials said earlier that at least 1.4 million people across the region need assistance and that 2.1 million overall

Nearly a week after the storm smashed into southwestern Haiti, some communities along the southern coast have yet to receive any assistance, leaving residents struggling to find shelter and potable water.

The National Civil Protection headquarters in Portau-Prince raised the official nationwide death toll to 473, which included at least 244 deaths in Grand-Anse. But local officials have said the toll in Grand-Anse alone tops 500.

Elancie Moise, an agronomist and director for the Department of Agriculture in southern Haiti, said between

80 to 100 percent of crops have been lost across the southern peninsula.

Food was slowly reaching remote communities, but there was also a growing need for medical supplies.

In the western seaside village of Dame Marie, patients with festering wounds lay silently on beds at the main hospital waiting for medicine a week after the storm hit.

Concern also was growing about an increase in cases of cholera.

Speaking to the UN Security Council, the UN envoy for Haiti, Sandra Honore, said the

health impact of Hurricane Matthew “cannot be overestimated.”

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters in New York that a “massive response” was needed to help Haiti emerge from the storm’s aftermath. He noted that crops and food reserves were destroyed and that at least 300 schools have been damaged.

“At least 1.4 million people need assistance at this time,” he said. “These numbers and needs are growing as more affected areas are reached. Tensions are already mounting as people await help.”

Charles opens pop-up shop

Obama takes aim at Trump

Prince Charles has opened his own restaurant and pop-up shop in a Scottish village to give it a boost after being devastated by flooding.

Charles and Camilla, known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, have opened the new venture while visiting flood-hit Ballater in Aberdeenshire.

The venture, known as the Rothesay Rooms, is hoped to not only attract visitors to the area, but also provide young people with kitchen training opportunities.

The pop-up initiative has breathed new life into a derelict former co-op and is part of Charles’ Ballater Flood Appeal, which since being launched in January has raised PS160,000 ($NZ277,360).

More than 300 homes and 60 businesses in the village were devastated when the River Dee overflowed in December.

Prince Charles said the idea was put to him by a local butcher, who thought it might be a good step forward.

“There has been a lot of effort in the last six months or so since the disastrous floods that did so much damage to poor old Ballater,” Prince Charles said. “(I hope) this particular restaurant and shop will help to give a little boost to Ballater, particularly in the off-season.”

Exposing the nation’s sharp political divisions as Election Day nears, supporters of Republican Donald Trump repeatedly interrupted President Barack Obama as he urged North Carolina Democrats to take advantage of early voting and cast their presidential ballots for Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Obama also delivered a sharp indictment of Republicans who continue to support Trump’s bid despite hearing him on a recently released video recording from 2005 talking in vulgar terms about making unwanted sexual advances toward women.

“The fact that now you’ve got people saying, ‘Well, we strongly disapprove. We really disagree. We find those comments disgusting. But we’re still endorsing him. We still think he should be president.’ That doesn’t make sense to me,” Obama told several thousand people at a raucous outdoor rally.

“Now I hear some people saying, ‘Well, I’m a Christian so I’m all about forgiveness because nobody’s perfect,’” Obama said. “Well, that is true. I am certainly not perfect and I, too, believe in forgiveness and redemption, but that doesn’t mean

US President Barack Obama I’m going to elect the person president.”

Obama said some Republicans were trying to have it both ways.

“You can’t repeatedly denounce what is said by someone and then say, ‘But I’m still going to endorse him to be the most powerful person on the planet’ and put them in charge,” he said.

Several minutes after Obama started speaking, a young man and a woman who appeared to be Trump supporters moved toward the stage and revealed Tshirts that said “Bill Clinton Rapist.” They were quickly escorted out by security.

After the president resumed speaking, someone could be heard shouting “Bill Clinton is a rapist.”

Minutes after that outburst,

a man ripped up one of the blue North Carolina Together placards that attendees were given to wave during the rally.

“This is our democracy at work. This is great,” Obama said, as the largely supportive crowd began to boo.

Obama also criticised Trump for threatening during Sunday’s debate to jail Clinton for using nongovernment email servers when she was secretary of state in Obama’s first term, without the benefit of a trial or due process.

Obama said the U.S. has stood “in contrast and in opposition” to those kinds of ideas and, “I frankly never thought I’d see the day when we’d have a major party candidate who would be promoting those kinds of notions.”

He urged those in audience to vote, saying you’ve got everything to lose in the Nov election and that civility is on the ballot, as well as respect for women, tolerance and even democracy.

“If you want to send a message in this election, make it a resounding message: Turn back the forces of racism and misogyny,” Obama said.

The British actor told Time Out magazine last year that he would only make another Bond movie for the money. However, when he was later asked by Britain’s Press Association about reprising the role, Craig joked: “Do I have a choice?”

Kim sues online media Kim Kardashian West sued an online media outlet for libel, saying she was wrongly portrayed as a liar and thief after she was attacked in Paris. The lawsuit in Manhattan federal court seeks unspecified damages from MediaTakeOut. com. It said Kardashian West, traumatised by the early October robbery, was victimised a second time when the website reported hours afterward that she faked the robbery and lied about the assault. The website’s owner, didn’t answer his phone when comment was sought. A message left with the website wasn’t immediately returned.

How do we attract young voters?

T

he dust has settled following the second debate of the United States presidential race and we’ve all had just enough time to reflect on what we witnessed.

It certainly captured the attention of viewers from all corners of the world, but not for the right reasons.

As Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton traded blows over alleged sexual assaults and rape, my thoughts returned to reality – for a moment, anyway, to assess what I, along with millions of others, were watching.

Exchanges of that nature have never been shared during a presidential debate before.

Hilary highlighted one of Trump’s own past statements in which he justified her accusations of him being a sexist creep.

While the Don returned fire by raising Hilary’s husband Bill’s past exploits.

The world, including the New Zealand public and media, has been enthralled by what closely resembles a playground tryst.

But why are we so interested?

This is without doubt the most farcical US presidential race in history.

The reason for our unwavering attention is that it is so far removed from our own political scene. So, is that why our voter numbers are so low?

Have we become used to constant mudslinging rather than constructive policies.

In the last New Zealand general election, more than 37 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds and 25 to 29-year-olds failed to vote.

But a quick glance at the internet shows us that plenty of young Kiwis are interested in the US election.

The fact is, US politics is, whether we like it or not, entertaining.

And sadly, the lack of entertainment that New Zealand politics offers leaves a large proportion of young people uninterested.

It seems we’re caught between a rock and a hard place.

Gutter politics garners interest, while New Zealand politics is “boring”.

Luckily our own self expectations and respect will prevent any New Zealand prime ministerial race from stooping so low, but it certainly won’t attract young voters.

Shareholders back governance model while 88 per cent voted in favour of the representation-related amendments to Fonterra’s Shareholders’ Council bylaws.

Fonterra chair John Wilson said that final vote reflected “shareholder sentiment that the recommendations were a significant improvement and it was time to move the cooperative forward.”

“Cooperatives, by their nature, need consensus on the important decisions. That is as it should be and today we have agreed on the final recommendations after a very constructive eight months of discussions and refinements,” Wilson said.

“It is a clear signal from our shareholder base that it is time to push on so the co-op can focus on our business priorities.”

Record guest nights in August New Zealand accommodation providers saw record highs for an August month this year, driven by a surge in international visitors.

National guest nights jumped 6.4 per cent to 2.45 million in August from the same month a year earlier, the highest ever recorded for the month, Statistics New Zealand said.

The country’s accommodation sector is in a sweet spot as record tourism pushes up demand, with research pointing to the need for increased hotel development over the next decade to avoid a looming shortfall of beds.

“A surge in international visitor arrivals provided most of the up-

ward impetus this month,” Statistics NZ business indicators senior manager Neil Kelly said. “Most guest-night series are at record highs for an August month.”

International guest nights rose 13 per cent to 938,000 in August, while domestic guest nights advanced 2.5 per cent to 1.5 million.

Guest nights spent in the North Island increased 9.2 per cent to 1.5 million as South Island guest nights advanced 2.3 per cent to 941,000.

Eleven of the 12 regional areas experienced a lift in guest nights, led by Northland where guest nights increased 25 per cent to 83,000, while Auckland re-

mained the most popular region with 567,000 guest nights in the month. Only Southland declined, dipping 0.1 percent to 42,000 guest nights in August.

Holiday parks, hotels and motels were more popular in the month for international guest nights, especially motels which increased 30 per cent in the month. Backpackers guest nights fell 1.2 per cent. All four accommodation types saw increased guest nights from domestic visitors. International visitors are the main contributor to backpacker accommodation, especially in summer, Statistics NZ said.

Fonterra Cooperative Group’s shareholders have voted in favour of a new governance and representation model, with the key change being farmers can directly nominate their own choice for selection to the board.

Earlier this year a proposed change failed to get the required 75 per cent majority vote needed.

The reform would have been the first in 15 years for the dairy cooperative’s governance model, though just under 64 per cent voted for a long-awaited review.

The new changes reduce the size of the board to 11 directors from the current 13, comprised of four independents and seven farmer directors. They also use a first-past-the-post voting system, replacing the previous single transferable vote model, and an independent nomination process, while adding a self-nomination process that requires the support of 35 shareholders.

Dairy farmers eye up beef sideline

Mid Canterbury dairy farmers are taking advantage of healthy beef schedules by keeping beefcross calves on farm for longer periods.

Ashburton-based PGG Wrightson dairy livestock rep Victor Schikker said the trend of running beef bulls to “tail off” dairy herds to mop up any cows who had failed to conceive through artificial insemination was long standing.

“I wouldn’t think there were necessarily more beef bulls used than normal, but with more cows the demand for bulls will increase,” Schikker said.

Both yearling and two-yearold hereford and angus bulls have been in strong demand this season.

Recent sales on South Canterbury studs achieved full clearance with demand exceeding supply, pushing prices up.

In recent years beef-cross calves were sold to a rearer at four days old, but this year with lower milk prices, there’s been a shift to keeping them on-farm to rear as a sideline, Schikker said.

This has also been influenced

by firm prices. White-faced calves are contracting at $450 at around the 100kg mark.

“There’s also a lot of purebred friesian bulls being raised onfarm, with a contract price of around the $400 mark,” Schikker said.

“That’s a huge shift away from what was considered the norm over the past few seasons, when the milk price was high.

“The attitude was we are milk farmers not beef farmers, [that] changed very quickly when the milk prices dropped down to the bottom end.

“Farmers are looking to supplement their income.”

Mild spring weather has resulted in high survival rates over calving and delivered ideal calf rearing conditions.

“The calves have done very well,” he said.

Angus bulls in strong demand

Lively bidding resulted in strong results and full clearance at the Meadowslea Romney and Angus Stud’s annual spring bull sale.

The Fairlie stud, which breeds bulls for South Island hill and high country conditions, had on offer 138 bulls including two-year-old and yearling angus bulls, and twoyear-old hereford bulls.

The average price across the sale was $2670.

Owner David Giddings was delighted with the full clearance at the sale and afterwards thanked the crowd of over 120 people in the gallery for the support.

The top price of $7000 for twoyear angus bulls for Lot 1 bought

by Stoneleigh Run of Kimbell and Lot 3 bought by Ben McLauchlan of Mount Somers.

Angus yearlings peaked at $5000 and a two-year hereford bull for $2900.

PGG Wrightson livestock genetics specialist and senior auctioneer John McKone said bidding was strong for the angus yearlings and it was pleasing to see beef clients chasing the calving ease that the animals on offer provided.

“While beef prices are strong, the buyers could still find good value on the day with angus yearling bulls for use in the dairy industry going for between $1600 and $2000,” McKone said.

“However, the best yearlings sold up to $5000 to commercial angus farmers in North Canterbury. Also three yearling bulls went to stud duty at Ratanui Angus in Tolaga Bay at $4100 and Red Oak Angus in Waipara at $4800.

“These results are a good endorsement for Meadowslea breeding programme.

PGG Wrightson Seeds has acquired a majority stake in Methven-based Agri Optics New Zealand Limited.

Agri Optics New Zealand was founded in 2010 by NZ Nuffield Farming Scholar and Methven farmer Craige Mackenzie and his daughter Jemma Mulvihill.

They are the New Zealand dealer for world Craige Mackenzie renowned precision agriculture providers Trimble and Precision Cropping Technologies. The company has a strong focus on crop sensors and farm and field mapping technologies.

The investment by PGG Wrightson Seeds into precision agriculture via Agri Optics New Zealand fits with its objective of bringing leading technologies to New Zealand farmers to help them improve their farming businesses, while for Agri Optics it will provide more resources to better support this rapidly growing area of farming in New Zealand.

PGG Wrightson Seeds group general manager John McKenzie said agriculture is a vital part of the New Zealand economy, but it was becoming increasingly important to understand and manage the level of inputs to achieve sustainable farm production and profit.

“Through a range of precision agriculture products and services Agri Optics assists farmers in increasing efficiency and sustainability of their farming systems through more precise management of inputs,” McKenzie said.

“This investment in Agri Optics is a logical next step for our business as we are also working with farmers and especially arable growers to produce high performing crops in a sustainable way.”

Agri Optics director Craige Mackenzie was delighted with the investment that PGG Wrightson Seeds had made into the company.

“We already have a close working relationship with the PGG Wrightson Seeds team and now having access to their resources will allow us to better meet the fast-growing precision agriculture needs of farmers in New Zealand.”

Dill and coriander marinade Keep a jar of this in the fridge and use as a marinade for sliced cucumber or sliced red onion.

www.guardianonline.co.nz Allenton Croquet The Allenton Croquet Club held their monthly meeting recently with a good attendance from members.

Flag matches between the South Canterbury clubs have started. Allenton has a team in three grades. Golf croquet members have been given their new handicap cards.

Members were reminded of the Engraver’s tournament to be held on Tuesday, November 22.

A resignation from a member had been received due to poor health. We were sorry to accept it and hope she will become a social member.

On the plus side we welcomed two new members and we wish them well and hope they enjoy learning the game and have fun.

There are still a few tickets available for our fund raiser, a film evening at the Regent Theatre on Thursday, October 13 at 8pm. Ring 308-0275 if you would like a night out to see a good film.

Ashburton County Lions Club In honour of a visit from the District Governor Tom MacDonald, the Ash-

burton County Lions held a Scottish themed night for their September tea meeting. The night began with a delightful performance by five young highland dancers from the Julie Hawke School of Dancing. This was greatly enjoyed by all members and we thank them for giving up their time to come and entertain us.

As well as wearing something with a Scottish flavour members wore a strange assortment of shoes for our annual ‘odd shoe night’ in support of Camp Quality. The District Governor then addressed the meeting informing members about a range of Lions initiatives at an international, national and local level. He also re-enforced the message that as well as Lions clubs being there to serve their communities they should also be a place of fun and fellowship.

Jenny Don was then inducted as a new member and Fern Blake was presented with a plaque from 202J District in appreciation of her leadership 201516. Thanks was given to all those who helped with the recent Camp Quality raffle and the stall at Boulevard Day. The club then approved donations to

the Hearing Dog Association, Youthline, NZ Suicide Prevention and the Ashburton College prize giving.

The main focus over the next two months will be the organisation of our annual ‘Toot for Tucker’ when we again look forward to the amazing support we always receive from the Ashburton community.

Tinwald Branch New Zealand Red Cross The monthly meeting was held October 6. President Pat O’Brien welcomed members and all said the Red Cross Principles.

Members stood for a Minute’s Silence in remembrance of a former branch member - Lorna (Doone) Oldham.

Apologies were accepted and the Minutes were confirmed and financial report presented. Thanks were given to members for their efforts in hosting members from the Foundation of the Blind at the previous meeting.

Most entries in the show went to Barbara Burst and the Moore Rosebowl for most points overall to Nancy Christey.

Rakaia This year’s Spring Flower Show was a great success. Although the membership is small the entries were varied and excellent.

Judge Elma Hobson congratulated members on the quality of the entries and gave useful tips eg. a floating bowl should be one-third flower, two -thirds water.

Results: Cut flowers, M. Hanrahan. Decorative: M. Hanrahan. Cooking: N Gardiner. Craft: P. Nolan, whose patchwork bag was outstanding. Second equal were G McCauchan and N Gardiner. The overall winner was M. Hanrahan.

The afternoon concluded with a fund-raising bottle auction.

Tinwald Colleen Cockburn kindly opened her home for our meeting at which Joy welcomed seven members. Two apologies were accepted.

Rakaia’s entry for the Bay was discussed and a thank-you card from Colleen Cockburn was received.

Wakanui held their September meeting at the Sinclair Centre. Swap a Garden Plant saw a variety of plants on offer.

A colourful display consisted of pictures which members had coloured in, these being handed out for completion last month.

The speaker was a local artist, Jenny Thompson.

Jenny brought along samples of her work and talked of her passion for art, and the classes that she teaches.

The meeting closed with hostesses Kay and Marlene serving afternoon tea.

Westpark Our September meeting happened to be our Flower and Craft Show.

A small turn-out of members still managed to enter a good number of entries.

The overall winner for the day was Mary Simpson.

Home-made skirts were collected to be donated.

The monthly raffle was won by Margaret Thorpe.

Details were given for the Annual Raffle and members filled in the roster. Notice was given of Red Cross in Your Community Roadshow to be held November 30 where the New Zealand Red Cross Secretary General will be present.

Notice was given of World Red Cross Remembrance Day December 17 – a Day to remember Red Cross personnel who have died while working for the International Red Cross, especially our own New Zealanders.

Meeting closed and Jane Wright from Hospice Mid Canterbury was welcomed.

She gave a most informative talk explaining the Hospice role of “enhancing the quality of life for those in the Mid Canterbury District dealing with lifelimiting illness, but does not provide clinical care”.

Anyone with a life limiting condition can access and benefit from Hospice Services.

A large box of home baking was presented to Jane to distribute.

The morning speaker, Chantelle Quinn made mayonnaise three ways from one batch, she was really entertaining.

The afternoon speaker was Kathleen Stringer who spoke on her trip to Morocco, an interesting and exotic country.

By all accounts Judy and Yvonne were successful with the competitions, Judy with three seconds, and Yvonne gaining a third place.

Afternoon tea rounded off a very nice meeting.

All Whites score historic draw The All Whites have ended their North American tour on a high, drawing 1-1 with the United States in Washington DC yesterday.

Following on from the credible 2-1 defeat to Mexico last Sunday, this was another performance full of grit and skill.

It is also the first time the All Whites have avoided defeat against the World No 22 ranked USA team, after losing their two previous encounters in 1999 and 2003.

Monty Patterson forced home New Zealand’s goal from close range in the 73rd minute, after American winger Julian Green had opened the scoring just after the half hour.

Patterson had two other gilt edged chances – one from three yards out after two minutes – and Chris Wood was a constant threat in an inspired performance from the Leeds striker.

Both teams came close to a winner in the last 10 minutes, with goal keeper Stefan Marinovic twice coming to the rescue of the New Zealand side with top saves.

The All Whites performance wasn’t always as polished as the game against Mexico, as they struggled to defend both flanks and captain Winston Reid was

But the visitors showed tre-

mendous resilience to come back into the match, after the home side had dominated the

first half.

The Americans, who were on a nine game winning streak in

Washington DC, opened the scoring in the 31st minute.

It looked a soft goal, as American winger Green beat Marinovic at his near post with a snap shot from just outside the penalty area.

Marinovic has been impressive since coming into the side two years ago, but seemed to freeze as the ball flashed past him.

Defenders Andrew Durante and Liam Graham also won’t enjoy the replay, as both defenders were guilty of hanging off the Bayern Munich forward before his snapshot.

That moment changed the momentum of the first half, as the United States took control.

The All Whites had moments where they threatened, usually through the power of Wood or the energy of Patterson, but spent most of the rest of the half trying to win back possession.

Both coaches made a raft of changes in the second half, and the game began to lose some shape. But the All Whites pushed until the end, in an all-out search for an equaliser rather than settling for a draw.

For Rufer, the match marked his first outing since breaking his leg and ankle for Premiership side Team Wellington in December 2015.

Rogerson, meanwhile, was signed by Merrick at the beginning of the 2015/16 campaign but failed to play a single min-

ute last year. Both were called upon by the veteran coach in response to a squad crisis, with six senior players missing the match through All Whites duty.

Rufer, who slotted into a central midfield role against City, said the opportunity for first-team minutes was exactly what he needed after his long absence.

“It’s given me more confidence and I’ve got a new motivation and hunger from being out for so long,” Rufer said.

“I was happy to just get out there, to get back in that environment with the boys.”

Rogerson, meanwhile, was relieved to finally make his A-League gong after already earning two caps for the All Whites.

The attacking midfielder was brought on with 10 minutes to go as his side chased the game in vain.

He felt the Phoenix were unlucky to come away without a result after playing more than half an hour against 10 men.

“I’ve been waiting quite a while for it, and when I got out there it wasn’t as scary as I thought it’d be,” Rogerson said.

“You’ve got to keep working hard on and off the field, and the chances will come.”

A first-half Anthony Caceres goal gave the much-fancied City outfit, missing star man Tim Cahill, a 1-0 victory.

India complete NZ demolition India completed a comprehensive demolition of New Zealand, winning the third test by a massive 321 runs within four days and completing a 3-0 series whitewash.

India’s first innings 557-5 declared snatched the initiative and New Zealand, chasing an improbable 475 to win, collapsed to 153 all out against the spin of Ravichandran Ashwin, whose 7-59 added to his first innings haul of 6-81, giving him 13 wickets in the game.

India won the series 3-0, after convincing wins in Kanpur and Kolkata earlier. They are now the No.1 ranked test team.

Kane Williamson (27) and Martin Guptill (29) added 35 runs for the second wicket. Ashwin got the breakthrough as he trapped Williamson lbw. Ross Taylor (32) then added some quick runs, hitting five fours and a six in his 25-ball stay. Umesh Yadav (1-13) had trapped Tom Latham (6) lbw before tea.

Taylor was clean bowled by Ashwin, and then the slide truly began as New Zealand lost their last seven wickets for 73 runs.

Triathlon New Zealand high Kiwi lines up world trap final performance boss resigns Triathlon NZ high performance boss Graeme Maw is stepping down and calling for his replacement to lift the sport to another level.

Maw issued a stark assessment of triathlon’s top-end state as he announced his resignation from the high performance director role he assumed in 2013.

“After four years of leading change, I feel I have taken the HP programme as far as I can,” he said.

“I recognise that performances and culture are not yet where they need to be, and it is time for someone else to take the reins for the next step.”

Englishman Maw has been unable to restore triathlon’s elite results to that of the previous decade when Olympic champion Hamish Carter and world champion Bevan Docherty enjoyed accomplished careers.

Andrea Hewitt has been a consistent performer but has been alone among Kiwis on the dais in recent years.

Maw, who will step down at Christmas, hopes his legacy will be the implementation of a framework to create success at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

A high performance centre has been established in Cambridge along with a regional coaching network and national talent identification programme.

Triathlon NZ president Arthur Klap acknowledged Maw’s contribution at a time which demanded change if New Zealand’s fortunes are to improve.

‘No show’ of stopping ABs Australia’s greatest rugby player Mark Ella says he is in “awe” of the current All Blacks juggernaut and believes the Wallabies are “no show” of stopping the New Zealand machine from racking up a world record for successive wins in the upcoming Bledisloe Cup clash at Eden Park.

A day after English rugby writer Robert Kitson described the All Blacks as the “Usain Bolt of world rugby”, Ella lavished praise on Steve Hansen’s men and advised Australian coach Michael Cheika to take an experimental approach to Saturday week’s match and keep a longer eye on the 2019 World Cup. “Do we go to New Zealand and think we are going to win this test, probably not,” Ella told Fox Sports specialist rugby show

this week. “I don’t think we can probably beat the Kiwis so why not mix it up and pick a backline that is a little different to what we have now.

“If Cheika believes he can win with this side, then good luck to him. I’m not going to sit there and argue with him....but I still think it probably isn’t our No. 1 backline and we need to continue experimenting.

“The way the All Blacks played at Kings Park the other day was just phenomenal. I just saw that in awe. How do you score nine tries against a team like South Africa, one of the dominant teams in world rugby. They just made them look like kids. It was men against boys. I just couldn’t believe what had happened.”

saw a golden period of Wallabies rugby in the 1980s and who retired too early, said Australian rugby had “gone backwards” in recent seasons and the All Blacks were ruthlessly exposing that fact.

“We’ve gone backwards basically. Look at Super Rugby, two or three years ago even when the Waratahs won in 2014, I was saying back then we needed to be working on our ball skills.

“All the old guys are saying the same thing. They think we’re a bunch of old dickheads who don’t know what we are talking about. But we can’t catch and pass under pressure. What are the All Blacks doing? Catching and passing under pressure. The All Blacks are two or three levels above everybody else.”

He also lauded the All Blacks’ tactical nous, saying South Africa naively played into New Zealand’s hands at Kings Park.

“When Morne Steyn came back, he did the job against Australia (but) the Kiwis knew exactly what was going to happen.

They (South Africa) were just going to kick for territory. The All Blacks controlled the football for 14 or 15 phases, and they just had patience. They knew they were going to score. They control the football unbelievably, better than any other side in world rugby.”

Ella said he admired Argentina’s efforts to emulate All Blacks rugby but said the Pumas should revert to “10-man rugby” until they lifted their skill level to the same as New Zealand’s. - NZME

Kiwi rugby player Hayden Triggs’s heartbreak New Zealand rugby player Hayden Triggs has used his rugby club’s website to reveal his distress over the death of his baby daughter in Ireland.

A former lock for the Manawatu province and also an-ex New Zealand Maori rep, Triggs has played for four of the five Kiwi Super Rugby franchises and is a popular figure in New Zealand pro rugby circles.

He has been plying his trade for leading Irish club Leinster since late last year.

Triggs, 34, revealed his heartbreak over the death of his infant daughter Stella on September 30.

A statement on the club’s website said the episode had been a “nightmare” for Triggs and his partner Mikala and that “our hearts are broken”.

The pair thanked the Leinster club and its fans for the support they had provided which included a minute’s silence for Stella

at last weekend’s match against Munster. “On behalf of Mikala and I, I would like to thank the players, their partners, the staff and indeed the supporters at Leinster Rugby for their support over the last few weeks and in particular for the wonderful gesture at the Leinster against Munster game at the Aviva Stadium in honour of our beautiful daughter Stella,” Triggs’ statement read.

“We would also like to thank the wonderful doctors, midwives, nurses and staff in Unit 8 at the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street who do amazing work on a daily basis and are a source of huge support for families such as ours who go through this nightmare on an all too frequent basis.

“Our hearts are broken but we will celebrate Stella’s short life and I would like to use this opportunity to raise awareness of the National Maternity Hospital Foundation and their #HelpHol-

A man who witnessed All Black Aaron Smith slipping into a disabled toilet with a mystery woman says he regrets going public and apologises to the player.

The man, who has asked not to be identified, said he “absolutely’’ regretted going to the media with the story, after he and his wife and their children saw the couple at Christchurch Airport the day after an All Blacks test last month.

In an email, the original tipster said the only organisation they had thought to report the incident to was a particular airline, as they believed the woman involved was a flight attendant or airport employee.

“We thought that was very unprofessional of her. We didn’t end up saying anything to the airline, though.’’

He said he never imagined the story would “blow up this big’’.

“We have had a lot of abuse since the story broke.

“It was actually my wife who wished to go to the media and it has therefore caused a lot of strain in our relationship this past week,’’ he said.

“I would like to formally apologise to Aaron Smith and the rugby union for reporting the story.’’

The witness acknowledged that they had a video of the incident, but would not be releasing it publicly any time soon.

“Due to the backlash, we have chosen not to distribute the video.’’

Lawyer Natalya King told The Spinoff the couple who made the recording of Smith’s toilet tryst and the outlets that broke the story may have committed an invasion of privacy.

Legally invasion of privacy was the “highly offensive” disclosure of private facts.

The closed toilet cubicle was considered a private space and Christchurch Airport was a private business that prohibited filming within its premises unless permission was granted and a location charge paid.

King said even if the airport was considered a public space that didn’t mean Smith’s sexual activity automatically lost its privacy status.

And even if Smith’s prominent All Black status put him in the public eye, according to law a person’s right to privacy could be diminished if there was legitimate public concern in the matter. This, according to the courts, covered issues like public health and safety or the conduct of the government.

She said although that might automatically mean well-known figures had a lesser right to privacy an All Black and his sex life rated at a far lower level in national importance.

Veteran Auckland public relations consultant Cedric Allan said there was little chance Smith would ever shake the infamy.

It would cost him financially, in lost potential endorsement deals, and emotionally.

The trial breakdown laws introduced to domestic rugby this year have been red carded. New Zealand Rugby high performance referee manager Rod Hill confirmed the trial breakdown laws used in the Mitre 10 Cup have been dumped by World Rugby although there would not be a total return to the old laws around the breakdown. The trial involving six-point tries and two-point penalties, used in the Heartland Championship this year, has also been dumped. Super team chases Fifita An Australian Super Rugby franchise is reportedly chasing the signature of controversial Cronulla star Andrew Fifita.

The wrecking ball forward’s future is as clouded as ever after he again antagonised the NRL over the decision to ban him from selection for the Kangaroos’ Four Nations tour of the United Kingdom. Fifita re-iterated his threat to walk away from the NRL and his contract with the Cronulla Sharks during an interview with Sky News on Tuesday night.

Fifita was overlooked for international honours because of his recent incidents of misbehaving off the field, including an ongoing NRL Integrity Unit investigation into his consorting and public support for convicted one-punch killer Kieran Loveridge.

Since publicly claiming he has spoken with his management and Cronulla Sharks officials about negotiating out of his 2017 NRL season deal, Fifita’s representatives have been approached by two Super Rugby franchises interesting in recruiting him for the 2017 season.

Rugby League Week has reported one Australian Super Rugby franchise and one based in New Zealand have spoken to Fifita’s manager to register their interest.

Tyson Fury is set to be stripped of his boxing licence – paving the way for a world heavyweight title showdown between Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua.

Fury’s case will be discussed by the British Boxing Board of Control in a meeting today and he is expected to be told he faces and indeterminate spell on the sidelines. The move comes after Fury reportedly failed a drugs test in the US then admitted in Rolling Stone magazine that he has “done lots of cocaine”. Sport Intervention call Springboks number eight Duane Vermeulen has launched a scathing attack against the rugby establishment in South Africa.

On the back of a record defeat to the All Blacks, Vermeulen is taking a stand, believing there needs to be an intervention. Vermeulen is labelling the leadership at the top as being in chaos and believes there needs to be a plan from the bottom up to turn the ship around. Vermeulen has said South Africa was a powerhouse in world rugby, but he can’t now see why players would commit 100 per cent.

Ross Bullard will be coaching Methven’s budding cricketers this season, while also turning out for the senior side.

Bullard takes the helm

Ross Bullard has arrived in New Zealand from the UK to fill the head coaching role at Methven Cricket Club for the season.

Bullard, who plays his cricket for Hampshire’s Bishop’s Waltham in his native England, will also turn out for the Methven senior team when the season begins on Saturday.

Bullard is qualified to Level 2 ECB club coach standard and is head coach at Bishop’s Waltham.

The all-rounder said he is hoping to improve the already high standard of Methven’s young players.

“The big thing for me is one-to-ones,” he said. “It will help them to develop and we’ll be doing some video analysis which I’ve trialled in the UK.” Bullard will be using the Pro-Cricket app which will help identify aspects of players’ games that can be improved.

He also believes the app is a fine tool in keeping young players interested and motivated.

“I think it’s massively important, it’s all well and good me speaking to them, but if they can see where they’re going wrong visually they can improve,” he said.

It’s not Bullard’s first trip overseas to play cricket, the 23-year-old honed his skills in

Perth in 2011 and will be out to wrestle the Pritchard Shield from Tech with Methven this season.

Bullard is following good friend and Bishop’s Waltham teammate Sam Medhurst into the role. And, like his predecessor, believes young players’ enjoyment is the key to improving their skills.

“After what I have seen, there’s obviously some very talented kids,” he said.

“My main focus is to get them to enjoy what they’re doing and if they can do that they will progress quickly.”

Sevens flyer Lam joins Hurricanes All Blacks Sevens gun Ben Lam has joined Super Rugby outfit the Hurricanes on a twoyear deal.

Lam, 25, has been a regular on the wing for the rugby sevens outfit since his debut in 2012 but missed the Rio Olympics through a serious knee injury.

He has also made six appearances for the Blues in 2012 and 2015 but missed the entire 2016 campaign due to his knee complaint.

Lam is expected to be fit in time for the start of the Wellington-based club’s Super Rugby title defence.

“The Hurricanes are the current Super Rugby champions and have been in the final for the past two seasons, so you can see they’re building something special,” the 194cm Lam said.

“I see this move as a great opportunity to develop my game and also as a fresh start for my 15s career.”

Lam, who hails from Auckland, has also won a Commonwealth Games silver with New Zealand Sevens in 2014.

Hurricanes chief executive Avan Lee said Lam was one of the most dangerous sevens

players in the world before his injury.

He and backs coach Jason Holland couldn’t wait to see Lam in the yellow and black jersey.

“Ben is a big, strong and quick wing and he’s shown in sevens and fifteens that he’s a genuine finisher,” Holland said.

“He’s going to add some real competition in our back three.”

Lam will join fellow new recruits Jordie Barrett, Reed Prinsep and Sam Lousi at the club next year.
