Cheryl Mockford is upset and gutted.

The Tinwald resident is being forced to close the doors on a pop-up shop that she’s been operating from her Tinwald garage for the past few months where almost everything in sight is free to a good home.

The garage is home to all matter of preloved items – clothes, toys, kitchenware, crafts, tools and homeware with many locals taking the time to explore their way through the treasure trove before taking items home – often exchanging them for other items that they no longer have a use for.

ything on it to be honest – and it’s not always there.”

For the past few months, it’s been running without a hitch.

But then this week the Ashburton District Council delivered a hefty blow to Mockford.

They told her that she wasn’t allowed to operate anymore.

In a letter received by Mockford the council said it had received a complaint in respect of the District Plan Compliance and that staff had looked further into the situation and decided the activity taking place is “best described” as a community activity.

Because of this, the type of land Mockford is on is not permitted to have such activity taking place.

“I’m pretty upset,” Mockford told the Guardian yesterday.

“I have permission from my landlord, from the rental agency and everything – they are really happy for me to be doing what I do.

“But the council doesn’t want me to carry on which is gutting and all I want to know is how have we got to this point?

“And, who has complained about it because I have had a lot of people call in and have a look round and tell me what a wonderful thing I’m doing.

“I’m just really upset.”

Bridges checked after flooding

Road and rail bridges in Mid Canterbury have been inspected for damage and given the all clear following high flows in many of the district’s rivers last week.

The Hinds River, normally dry, topped the Maronan Road bridge and the Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road (Route 72) was closed temporarily because of concerns of erosion damage on the northern end of the Rangitata River Bridge.

Traffic on the inland route was diverted to State Highway 1 to cross the Rangitata, which was swollen with dirty water after 350mm of rain fell in its upper catchment. The road reopened on Saturday morning.

Ashburton District Council service delivery manager Neil McCann said crews were currently assessing what work was required on the Rangitata river bank.

Double Hill Run Road was also open with no major damage and council is grading fords to improve access.

The sunshine bridges on the Hinds would remain closed until water levels dropped to allow the roadway to be replaced.

“We expect this to happen in the next couple of days.”

The Rangitata peaked at around 1800 cumecs at Klondyke early Friday morning but had dropped back to 470 cumecs by Saturday 1pm; it was at 223 at 10am yesterday and Environment Canter-

Because of the complaint and the subsequent discovery of a breach of the District Plan the Council has ordered Mockford to cease the activity – but invited her to apply for a consent which would come at a cost of more than $1000

and would also require written approval from all neighbouring properties.

Upon receiving the letter yesterday afternoon, Mockford tried to make immediate contact with the council to try and discuss the issue further, but as of last night was yet to have heard back from the department in control of the matter.

The Guardian made several attempts to gain comment from the Ashburton District Council on the matter throughout yesterday afternoon, but despite assurances of a response none was forthcoming by deadline.

Powerful tribute to WWI fallen

World War One songs supported a generation throughout some of its darkest days.

Those songs were heard again at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre at the weekend, as the Ashburton MSA Men’s Choir staged For the Fallen to commemorate Armistice Day. Musical director Angie Creswell said the concert was an opportunity to celebrate the freedom that was so fiercely fought for, and so bravely won 100 years ago.

“These songs speak of loss and longing, of a determination to keep going and to be strong in the face of insurmountable odds,” she said.

For the Fallen was well-received by an almost full house on Saturday night. A second concert on Sunday saw about two thirds of seats occupied.

The choir was accompanied for some items by Phoenix Rising, and others featured including the Garden City Big Band, accompanist Olivia Pike, soloist Ocean Waitokia, and the Ashburton College dancers.

“I think it exceeded expectations. It made for a very moving and respectful tribute to Armistice Day,” said MSA choir member Rodger Letham.

Letham said if a profit was returned there would be a contribution made to the Red Cross, as without this organisation many World War One veterans would never have returned home.

Water testing not required after Canterbury 1080 drop

Water monitoring was not required for the 1080 pest control operation in the upper Wilberforce and Mathias valleys despite being in the upper tributaries of the Rakaia catchment.

Water monitoring is sometimes required as a condition of the Medical Officer of Health consent but was not in this case.

DOC Operations Manager

for North Canterbury, Kingsley Timpson, said that when 1080 is placed in water, it quickly dilutes to minute quantities.

“External, independent research has confirmed that 1080 presents very little risk to waterways, and the people and wildlife that use them,” Timpson said.

The aerial 1080 operation was completed on September 28.

At the same time an aerial application of 1080 at Russell For-

est in Northland where testing of water samples failed to find any trace of the toxin.

Samples were taken 15 and 39 hours after the operation on September 28, and then again on October 25, following 10mm of rain over 24 hours, at two sites within the treatment area and eight outside it.

One of the 30 samples at 15 hours produced detectable 1080, at 0.1 part per billion (ppb), well

below the Ministry of Health’s precautionary drinking water standard of 2ppb.

When that water was re-tested at 39 hours, no detectable 1080 was found, nor was the toxin detected in drinking water supplies.

DOC’s Northern North Island operations director Sue Reed Thomas said the results supported the department’s contention that 1080 broke down very

quickly in water.

Timpson said DOC would monitor possums in the upper Rakaia 1080 pest control area, and in an adjacent trapped area, three months after the operation to determine its success.

“The warning signs will remain in place for eight months after 1080 application, which is the time possum carcasses may take to decompose,” Timpson said.

Protect yourself against fraud

Helen Keller once wrote, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”

Of course, she meant that from a pure and charitable perspective, but it is a concept also embraced by fraudsters and scammers whose goal is to actively and covertly recruit as many others as possible to assist in their offending.

The internet is an ideal breeding ground in this regard.

It provides a platform for a scammer to cast their nets wide and an almost unlimited opportunity to snare a vulnerable and or gullible accomplice.

They know how to manipulate and pull at heart strings.

A recent investigation revealed the following modus operandi: A man starts chatting, via an internet messaging platform, with a pretty 20-something female, as a “friend”. She creates a rapport and tells him she lives in France and works for a charity helping the disadvantaged in Africa.

She flatters him, builds trust and then asks for his help.

She needs an address to send parcels to.

She says there are items that can be bought cheaper online in New Zealand because of the currency exchange.

She tells him he would be helping the charity immensely – that these goods will be used and distributed by the charity to help the education and connectivity of the underprivileged and isolated.

But the retail outlets don’t post internationally, hence the need for a New Zealand address.

This week is International Fraud Awareness Week and the New Zealand Police are doing their bit to make people aware of scammers.

TIPS AGAINST FRAUD ■ If an investment seems too good to be true, it probably is ■ Members of the public should seek advice before making any online investments they are unsure of ■ Scammers are extremely persistent and can seem very credible as they are highly versed in their trade ■ Do not have your address, or that of anyone you know, used as a halfway house for packages bought online by “friends” ■ If any interaction with someone online includes a connection with Ghana, Nigeria or Togo – no matter what their story might be – do not engage with them ■ Ignorance and/or naivety are not reliable defences in a criminal proceeding in New Zealand.

It is not a charity he has heard about – she tells him it is because it is just small, and all the more reason to keep costs low and take advantage of favourable costings in New Zealand.

All she asks him to do is forward the packages on to her.

She will make arrangements to prepay the onward courier and postage costs if he could liaise with the local freight company.

And so he agrees, but he doesn’t have a reliable postal address, he works and won’t be there to sign

for the packages.

He asks a family member if they wouldn’t mind helping out.

“For charity,” of course.

And so the kind-hearted and charitable family start to receive the packages.

Phones, computers, shoes, clothes, musical instruments, IT equipment – the volume and variety is staggering.

Diligently, they forward the packages on to Ghana and Togo.

They do this until police come knocking and say that all the goods

have been obtained by deception.

In other words, the multiple credit cards used to make each and every transaction were stolen or fake.

They have been set up, they are the fall guys and they could be facing charges for being complicit in criminal activity. The reality is there is no pretty young thing, no charity and no good will.

The place in Ghana that the packages were sent to was in Accra – hub of the Sakawa Boys, which would mean nothing to the aver-

age person but in the fraudster world, this is the nexus of African internet scamming.

A quick Google search will reveal they are ruthless scammers.

Helen Keller may have been blind but as the proverb goes, “There are none so blind as those who will not see.”

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of a crime, in person or online, should report the matter to their local police.

The average value of a house in the Ashburton District might be a modest $350,000 but the district also has its share of homes with a price tag that tops $1 million.

Data provided by QV indicates there are 47 houses with valua-

tions of $1 million or more and another 27 knocking on the door of seven figures, currently valued between $900,000 and $999,000.

The district is joining a growing trend around New Zealand where $1 million homes no longer hit the headlines.

There are now 591 houses with

valuations of $600,000 and higher.

The 2013 census shows that there were 12,396 occupied dwellings and 1248 unoccupied dwelling around the district.

If the total number of houses, 13,644 were all standalone properties rather than houses on farms, the $600,000-plus housing

pool would represent close to 5 per cent of the district’s residential housing stocks.

In addition to the 74 $900,000plus homes, 73 houses were valued between $800,000 and $899,999, 111 at between $700,000 and $799,999 and 333 between $600,000 and $699,999.

Young farmers vie for top title A deer farmer is among a group of eight food producers vying to be named the next Aorangi Young Farmer of the Year.

Ezekiel Turner, 26, is a stock manager at the sprawling 3800-hectare High Peak Station in the Rakaia Gorge.

The property runs 1800 hinds, 400 mixed-age velveting stags and 200 replacement yearling hinds.

It also has 4000 perendale ewes and 1200 hoggets, and 360 beef cows and 80 replacement heifers.

“I’ve been here three-and-ahalf years. I really enjoy the variety that comes with the role,” the Methven Young Farmers member said.

The father-of-four qualified for the Aorangi regional final at a district qualifying contest at Hinds on Saturday against members of the Hinds, Foothills, Methven and Pendarves Young Farmers clubs.

“The contest is a great way for me to challenge myself, learn new skills and keep me on my toes,” he said.

Turner was raised on sheep, beef and dairy farms in Gisborne and Canterbury, and has a Diploma in Rural Business.

He spent 2010 seeding and harvesting crops for a large export company in Western Australia.

few mates from Telford and the company I worked for had lots of big machinery,” he said.

It will be Turner’s first time competing in the Aorangi regional final.

Turner qualified at Hinds with Campbell Sommerville (Meth-

ven), Josh McAtamney (Hinds) and Billy Dowle (Methven). They will meet southern Aorangi qualifiers Adam Judd, Alan Harvey, Kerry Watson and William Ellis in the regional final to decide who goes through to the FMG Young Farmer of the Year grand final.

Dowle, 26, farms across the Rakaia River from Turner and is also a member of Methven Young Farmers.

“I’ve always wanted to give the contest a go, but it was Ezekiel who encouraged me to sign up for the district contest,” he said.

Dowle is a stock manager at Redcliffs Station, which runs about 3800 merino ewes and 240 angus cows.

He has a Bachelor of Agriculture and spent 18 months working on farms in the United Kingdom after he graduated.

“It was a fantastic experience.

The farms included a business finishing 8000 pigs, a property which lambed 2000 ewes indoors and a beef feedlot with 500 cattle,” he said.

Zoe Jackson, who organised the Hinds contest, said the leading competitor was actually Jesse Wilde from the Hinds club, but he had to withdraw as the regional event would clash with his wedding.

She said the 19 competitors tried their hand at 14 modules including fencing, quad bike and chainsaw skills, seed identification and banking. The home economic unit caused a bit of head-scratching, with competitors asked to fold a double sheet, identify five cooking spices, cut an onion and do a spelling and grammar test.

Jackson said it was a fun day all round, with plenty of learning opportunities.

The Aorangi regional final is being held in Oamaru on February 23, next year.

California wildfire slows Relief and heartache await those starting to return home to a Southern California wildfire zone.

Eager to know the status of his house, 69-year-old Roger Kelly defied evacuation orders and hiked back into Seminole Springs, his lakeside mobile home community in the Santa Monica Mountains north of Malibu.

His got the thrill of finding his house intact. But some a half-block away were laid to waste, as were dozens more, and virtually everything on the landscape around the community had been turned to ash.

“I just started weeping,” Kelly said. “I just broke down.

Your first view of it, man it just gets you.”

The community where Kelly and his wife have lived for 28 years and raised two children was among the hardest hit by the so-called Woolsey fire that broke out Thursday, destroying at least 177 homes and leaving two people dead.

Despite strong Santa Ana winds that returned yesterday, no additional structures were believed to have been lost, meaning many would return in the coming week to find their home as Kelly did, authorities said.

Huge plumes of smoke still rose in the fire area, which stretches miles from the northwest corner of Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley to the Malibu coast.

A one-day lull in the dry, northeasterly winds ended at mid-morning and authorities warned that the gusts would continue through today.

The lull allowed firefighters to gain 10 per cent control of the Woolsey fire, which has burned more than 335 square kilometres in western Los

Angeles County and southeastern Ventura County since Thursday.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby stressed there were numerous hotspots and plenty of fuel that had not yet burned, but at sunset he said there had been huge successes despite “a very challenging day”.

Osby noted that a November 1993 wildfire in Malibu destroyed more than 270

homes and said he would not be surprised if the total from the current fire would be higher.

The fire’s cause remained under investigation but Southern California Edison reported to the California Public Utilities Commission that there was an outage on an electrical circuit near where it started as Santa Ana winds blew through the region.

World leaders take aim at nationalism For President Donald Trump in Paris, America First meant largely America alone.

At a weekend commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One, the president who proudly declares himself a “nationalist” stood apart, even on a continent where his brand of populism is on the rise.

He began his visit with a tweet slamming the French president’s call for a European defence force, arrived at events alone and spent much of his trip out of sight in the American ambassadors’ residence in central Paris.

He listened as he was lectured on the dangers of nationalist isolation, and then he headed home just as the inaugural Paris Peace Summit was getting under way.

The visit made clear that, nearly two years after taking office, Trump has dramatically upended decades of American foreign policy posture, shaking allies.

That includes French President Emmanuel Macron, who

With Trump and other leaders looking on, Macron took on the rising tide of populism in the United States and Europe and urged leaders not to turn their backs by turning inward.

“Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism: Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism,” Macron said, adding that, when nations put their interests first and decide “who cares about the others” they “erase the most precious thing a nation can have ... its moral values.”

After Trump was gone, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who recently announced that she will not be seeking re-election, made an impassioned plea for global co-operation at the peace forum, saying World War One had “made clear what disastrous consequences a lack of compromise in politics and diplomacy can have”.

Don’t let the special moments pass you by A

s a young fella growing up, winning a New Zealand Trotting Cup was all I ever wanted to do.

Most of my mates dreamed about driving fire engines, or big diggers and trucks, but not me – I wanted to drive racehorses.

Every year the second week of November would roll around and I’d do anything I had to do to ensure I wasn’t at school or anywhere else that might interrupt my chance to watch the New Zealand Trotting Cup. It was my World Cup Final and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

But like most good dreams, mine didn’t eventuate. As I got

older, I got bigger and thus the prospect of any horse having to lug my big frame around a track at 60 kilometres per hour would have been about as appealing as raw chicken that’s been sitting in the sun for two days straight.

But while the dream is deflated, the love of New Zealand Trotting Cup day hasn’t.

It’s the one day of the year

where nothing else matters, all I want to think about is who’s going to win each race and, in particular, who is going to win the big one later in the day.

And isn’t it funny how those really significant moments in our lives tend to take over.

Whether it be a horse race, a rugby game, or even that really important annual meeting, when they draw closer they become all encompassing – it’s all you talk about and all you want to hear about from others.

Such moments are special.

And we must continue to cherish them because they give hope and they give excitement – two things everyone needs in their

day-to-day lives.

I’ve got friends whose equivalent Trotting Cup Day is taking their prize-winning livestock to the local A&P show and others whose mecca is that one music gig of the year where they are the front band and not the ones left to open for someone else apparently better.

So, make sure you enjoy those really special days in your everyday life. They don’t come around very often so getting the most out of it is pretty vital to it being enjoyable every time it does.

Now, I’ve had a few people stop me in the street this week and ask after finding Cross Counter in last week’s Melbourne Cup

who I’m selecting for the big one today at Addington.

In some ways, I find selecting the winner of the trotting cup harder than the Melbourne Cup, which is ridiculous because I should know the form better, and there’s not as many rivals to worry about.

But I know the form too well probably. I could tell you where most horses in the race finished in their race three starts ago if I really thought about it. Too much information is a bad thing, sometimes.

But after hours of study and even more time pondering, I’m going with Dream About Me to win this afternoon.

DIRA review tackling dairy impediments T

weaks and amendments to World Rugby Laws seem to happen every other year, and engender intense debate here. Rightly so, as the game is a big feature of the New Zealand way of life.

It’s an entirely different sphere, but milk is another Kiwi icon as well as being a key to our export earnings and economy. Not to stretch the analogy too far, but to succeed on the world stage like the All Blacks, our milk product producers also need to be enterprising, innovative and highly competitive. To do that, we need a sound set of rules governing the industry.

DIRA (the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act) came into play in 2001 and was instrumental in the creation of Fonterra. A big part of it was ensuring such a dominant industry player didn’t squash smaller rivals. Now those rules are being reviewed and Federated Farmers is very keen to hear our farmer members’ thoughts, to help guide our submission to the Government.

A lot of our dairy members are Fonterra shareholders, and their livelihoods to a big degree hinge on the performance of the co-operative. It’s fair to say that performance has been patchy of late. We’ve got to make sure we have the right settings that enable Fonterra to continue to be a world-leading dairy entity but also a framework that allows other processors to flourish.

Preliminary analysis included in the DIRA review discussion document released earlier this month shows the Act appears to be: ■ effective at achieving its core regulatory objective of managing Fonterra’s dominance; ■ is still relevant and needed at this stage; and ■ is unlikely to be encouraging inefficient industry growth or preventing Fonterra from pursuing a value-added strategy.

However, there is some evidence DIRA: ■ is preventing Fonterra from effectively managing some aspects of its farmers’ environmental performance, this producing unintended consequences, and\ ■ providing access to regulated milk for large dairy processors for whom it may no longer be necessary.

A key question is whether Fonterra should continue to be required to take milk from new dairy conversions, and/ or from more isolated farming operations. Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor has already

It’s a tricky one because on the one hand we want Fonterra to maximise farmer payouts and invest in value-adding; on the other we don’t want to leave any farmer’s dairy operation unviable.

Do we want the industry to be value or volume based (or what’s the right mix of the two?) and does DIRA provide dairy companies with the best framework to

provide that?

I’m not going to say here what Federated Farmers’ initial thinking is on DIRA because at this stage we want to hear what our farmer members think. They’re not simple issues but they deserve very careful consideration before the February 8 submissions deadline.

YOUR VIEW State Highway 1 Re: Michael Hanrahan’s letter; I certainly hope I’ll be voting in next year’s local body elections, but since its highly unlikely to feature any young, fresh future-thinking candidates, then I guess I won’t be.

As for the Somerset Hotel you’re saying the council had absolutely no input on the design and building of our new large half empty concrete block, come on, instead of turning it into the Ocean beach Hotel in Cottesloe Perth, it’s now just another dull building in our dull town.

I’m simply saying the council has no interest in ideas that don’t personally tailor to their big egos, ie the future.

Take the second bridge for ex-

ample, an idea that would save lives and more importantly (for the council at least), save money the sooner it’s built, especially considering our country’s fast growing population.

And as far as State Highway 1 goes, you say the council would have no input regarding the daily traffic flow in and out of town, another ludicrous idea, I know this is a government/council matter but surely, they must be discussing the situation.

Having said that, looking into the future I’m sure railway will ease the burden, certainly for tourists travelling around the country, I’m just glad we have a beautiful old railway station where they can stop and spend some money every day, let’s just hope the council

doesn’t take that down too.

Hemp seed gets go-ahead

Arable farmers welcoming the Government’s legislative changes to allow the sale of hemp seed as food say it is no Trojan Horse for the decriminalisation of cannabis.

Previously, hemp growing under permit was restricted to seed oil for human consumption or for its fibre. Amendments are being made to food regulations and the misuse of drugs (industrial hemp) regulations so it can be grown as an edible seed.

Federated Farmers’ arable vice chairman David Clark said any new crop or increased crop availability would be welcomed by arable growers.

He said Mid Canterbury growers had produced hemp seed the past few years under individual permits and increasing its availability had to be a good thing for growers.

Hemp benefits for health food production had potential, he said.

“But I would go with a couple of cautions in what some people in our society see with hemp growing being a Trojan Horse for the decriminalisation of marijuana and they are totally unrelated subjects. [Hemp] is a total non-THC crop.’’

Clark said hemp seed was like any other commercial crop and would require fertiliser and irrigation to maximise its production.

“There has been a lot of hyperbole by the pro-cannabis and

hemp camps that this is some miraculous crop that doesn’t require irrigation and fertiliser and will replace dairy cows in Mid Canterbury. Once again this is absolute nonsense. It is a commercial arable crop like any other and we welcome it.’’

Methven farmer Craige Mackenzie is keeping an open mind about growing hemp again, but is unlikely to stray from his cropping rotation.

“We don’t grow it anymore. It wasn’t a viable enough break crop to continue it, but on saying that at the time I used to say the rules needed to change for it to be used as flour or other food sources and that would double its value and make the crop viable ... so this law change is significant.’’

He said hemp harvesting was difficult and other challenges were birds loved its seeds and keeping the spray-free crop free of weeds.

“If you want to set your combine on fire that’s the crop to grow because [of] the oil content of the crop. It’s got to be the most flammable crop there is.’’

Hemp was no “wonder crop’’, but it was an alternative, low input spring crop suiting some rotations, he said.

Concerns that cannabis might be grown hidden in the middle of non-psychoactive hemp crops are considered unfounded as cannabis would cross-contaminate with the legal variety and lose its potency.

Clark said the harvesting of hemp seed was the main commercial gain to be taken from growing the crop, but growers would be happy if there were further byproducts, such as the production of its fibre.

He said hemp growing was similar in gross margins to gains from other spring arable crops.

Regional economies would be the biggest winners of rule changes that allowed hemp seed to be treated as [just] another edible seed, said Food Safety Minister Damien O’Connor.

“Export revenue of $10-20 million could be generated from the change within three to five years,” he said.

Until now, hemp had been grown under permit and was used for fibre and hemp seed oil, he said.

“Hulled, non-viable seeds and their products will now be viewed as just another edible seed. Growing, possession and trade of whole seeds will still require a licence from the Ministry of Health.

Hemp seeds are safe to eat, nutritious and do not have a psychoactive effect.’’

Hemp flowers and leaves will not be permitted to be grown for human consumption. Labels for hemp seed food cannot include the words cannabis or marijuana or show an image of the plant, including its leaf.

Regulatory changes came into force yesterday.

Hemp growing is being eyed up as a viable cropping option.

MARKET REPORT With the impetus to reduce greenhouse gases becoming stronger, the focus to date has been on methane. However, nitrous oxide (N2O) is arguably the greater problem with its 114-year life in the atmosphere which converts to approximately 300 times the heating capacity of CO2.

Agriculture, again, is the focus of where most is produced with about 30 per cent of livestock emissions being in the form of N2O. For the uninitiated, to where it comes from, it is a byproduct of animals’ urination and nitrogen applications. With GHGs being one of, if not the major, externality of livestock farming, a close second is the negative impact intensive livestock farming can have on water quality.

The root cause of this in most cases is the same, as for N2O, that is livestock urination. This leads to what is available to mitigate these effects.

Through the media a lot has been made about how few options farmers have apart from reducing livestock numbers, planting trees or both. Fortunately, Fed Farmers have longer memories and have recently revived the conversations around dicyandiamide (DCD) or EcoN as the Ravensdown version of the product was called.

Its initial use was to improve the efficiency of nitrogen usage by reducing the ability of the conversion of ammonium to nitrate during the process of nitrification which then holds the product in the soil longer and helps to enable plants to uptake the nitrogen improving growth and, in the process, reducing N leaching into waterways.

A fortunate side-effect of this process is the reduction of the volitisation of ammonia to N2O. The success of the product(s) depended upon soil types and climate (mainly) but reductions in both leaching and the conversion to GHGs ranged from 30 to 70 per cent in very successful cases.

Uptake, mainly from the dairy fraternity, was limited mostly by cost as the economic benefits were only measurable on the improved pasture growth and it was reliant upon the farmers’ “good will” to gain benefits for the externalities.

Unfortunately, in 2013 traces of DCD were detected in milk. It was in very small amounts and certainly wasn’t considered to be a threat to human health. However, in the process of developing the product, no codex of minimum allowable levels had ever been applied for and so no matter what amounts were detected it technically meant a breach of standards.

Roll on five years to the present. The scene has changed considerably. Climate change is no longer debatable and it is likely that costs will be applied to livestock emissions, as well farmers are under all sorts of pressure to reduce their impact upon waterways.

Back to Fed Farmers. In a statement last week, they have highlighted that Ravensdown says there’s now a chance that world regulatory authorities, including NZ’s Ministry for Primary Industries, might ratify an umbrella codex agreement mid-2019 to set rules for a maximum residual level for a range of benign compounds in food products.

If that happens, Eco-N could be back in use here during autumn to winter 2020 (DCD is a winter-active compound, and that’s the season when the impact of nitrate leaching is greatest).

It appears that MPI is receptive to the re-

instatement of the product and shouldn’t hamper the progress. Another plus in the future use is that apparently the product has gone beyond the restricted patent stage and so more companies will be able to sell variations of it, presumably reducing cost.

With the current climate around externalities, farmer uptake should be a lot greater than it was back in 2013 and it is likely that other farming systems may be in a position to use it also.

Despite not being available in New Zealand, it is still used by farmers in the US. To those who are put off by the thought of chemical elements being found in milk, they need to consider what is already floating around in the food chain.

Microplastics are found throughout now, as are heavy metals, plus other chemicals such as DDT. So, in the context of these pollutants, DCDs, at least until proved otherwise, appears quite innocuous.

With the oncoming train of costs and regulations coming at farmers they are going to need a pretty complete toolbox to deal with the future and DCDs may be a valuable addition.

Markets Sheep No dramatic changes to prices this week.

Most companies have moved into the new season lamb schedules, but with little change from what was being paid for last year’s born lambs.

Store lambs that are close to finishing or indeed ready for processing are achieving good money, but lesser lambs are starting to be discounted. Mutton had a small lift which is welcome news given the lifting dollar.

Wool No good news on the wool front with continuing softening across the board.

This week’s sale is being held at the Christchurch Agricultural Show if readers feel like seeing what is likely to be another soft sale.

Fewer finer wools were sold last week, being in the North Island and crossbred wools were down by between 8 to 14 per cent and with a quarter of offerings passed in it’s not a great scene for growers.

Beef Cow schedules dropped this week, largely on the back of the dollar’s strength and the soft demand in the US. Prime beef had a small drop but saleyard prices seem to be holding.

Venison It is looking like the halcyon days of being over $11 per kg may be coming to an end with prices down to $11.10/kg, 30 cents below the high and the trend moving down.

Dairy The Oceania site monitored at the USDA agricultural marketing service had lifts in three of the four products this week and WMP has held to the previous period. However, when the dollar’s influence comes in, returns to farmers will be a concern.

Gross merchandise value, a figure that shows sales across Chinese e-commerce behemoth’s Alibaba’s various shopping platforms, exceeded the U$S25.3b record set on Singles’ Day last year – up around 27 per cent.

New Zealand was the ninthbest performing country for sales on Singles’ Day, up from 14th place in 2017, and ranked out of 230 countries and regions.

A2 Milk was the sixth-best performing retail brand across Alibaba’s shopping channels and in the first hour of the event sales of New Zealand lamb increased by more than 900 per cent from last year.

Alibaba Group chief executive Daniel Zhang said the record figures showed the strength of China’s “consumption economy”.

The numbers are mind-boggling at this on-line sale.

In the hours leading up to the shopping event, Alibaba hosted its fourth annual countdown gala to celebrate the official launch of the festival.

Singles’ Day got off to a strong start with sales hitting $1 billion

in one minute and 25 seconds.

Just over an hour in, and sales exceeded $10 billion, around five minutes faster than last year.

The number of delivery orders surpassed a billion.

Japan and the United States recorded the highest number of sales to Chinese consumers during the event followed by Korea, Australia and Germany.

More than 700 New Zealand brands participated in the event, including cult favourites Linden Leaves, Trilogy, Ecostore, Antipodes, Comvita and Fonterra.

Taking place on the 11th day of the 11th month, Singles’ Day – or 11.11 as it is commonly known in China – is fast becoming a calendar fixture for many New Zealand brands and retailers.

It started as a spoof anti-Valentine’s Day event celebrated by single Chinese university students in the 1990s.

Singles’ Day is considered the biggest shopping day of the year, exceeding sales of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, combined.

Seeka planning $50m rights offer

By GAvin evAnS Kiwifruit grower and marketer Seeka plans to raise about $50 million from shareholders to help fund its ongoing expansion.

The firm is offering existing investors the chance to buy one new share for every 1.5 shares held at $4.25 each.

That is 25 per cent less than the price the shares closed at on Friday, and a 17 per cent discount on an ex-rights basis.

The rights offer is fully underwritten by First NZ Capital which is being paid 2.75 per cent of the offer proceeds.

“Seeka will use the capital raised to strengthen our balance sheet, repay bank debt, undertake planned capital expenditure and give us greater financial flexibility and freedom to deliver better value for our shareholders,” chair Fred Hutchings said in a statement filed with NZX. The firm’s shares were recently unchanged at $5.70, down about 13 per cent this year.

Te Puke-based Seeka is the biggest kiwifruit producer in New Zealand and Australia.

In Australia it also grows and markets nashi and pears, and in New Zealand it grows avocados and kiwiberry (like a bite-sized, smooth-skinned kiwifruit).

Earlier this year, the company acquired Turners & Growers’ Northland horticulture business to gain scale and improve efficiencies.

Scams hurting tradies Kiwi tradespeople are being urged to be vigilant following rising losses linked to business email compromise scams. Figures from Netsafe show the amount of money reported being lost to the scams has rocketed up from $246,000 in the first nine months of last year to $2.2 million in the same period this year. The scam involves a person hacking into the email systems of a company and sending out altered invoices to clients with new account details which trick the payer into sending the money to a fraudster. - NZME

Very generous super Retiring Supreme Court chief justice Dame Sian Elias is leaving the role with a platinum-plated superannuation entitlement seeded with at least $3.3 million of public money. That nest egg, likely worth millions more, comes from a uniquely generous super scheme that sees judges, including Elias, able to contribute up to five per cent of their salaries to a superannuation fund that is then topped up by $7.50 for each dollar they contribute.

Guest nights go higher New Zealand guest nights pushed higher in September, spurred by a lift in both domestic and international tourism numbers.

There were 2.7 million guest nights in hotels, motels, holiday parks and backpackers in September, up 2.9 per cent compared to September 2017, Statistics New Zealand said.

Hotels were the most popular, up 2.2 per cent to 1.1 million. Motels lifted 3 per cent to 917,000.

Backpacker hostels and holiday parks also posted rises.

Spending on the rise

Seeka said it expects to undertake about $32 million of capital expenditure during the 2019 financial year, including upgrades of its processing plants at Te Puke and Kerikeri.

From the end of next year, it wants to hold net debt at 1.5- to 2.5-times long-term maintainable earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation.

The company last month agreed to sell five of its Northland kiwifruit orchards to new longterm suppliers for $15.9 million.

Yesterday it said it was expecting further Northland sales over the next 12 months. This, combined with other initiatives, will help reduce debt during 2019.

The company reiterated its operating earnings guidance for the December 2018 financial year at between $24 million and $25 million.

Retail spending on electronic cards inched higher in October as petrol prices rose to record levels, boosting fuel spending. However this was largely offset by a decline in payments on vehicles and apparel.

Seasonally-adjusted total retail spending on cards rose 0.1 per cent between September and October, after a 1.1 per cent increase in September, Statistics New Zealand said. Core retail spending, which excludes vehicle-related industries, was flat, after gaining 1.1 per cent in September.

Centre opening delayed SkyCity Entertainment Group expects further delays at its “challenging” New Zealand International Convention Centre project in Auckland but still has no opening date.

The casino operator says the centre and Horizon Hotel, originally budgeted at $703 million and expected to be completed in February 2019, will now be completed “beyond December 2019”.

■ Preheat the oven to 190°C. ■ Lamb: Place 1T oil in a small heavy-based saucepan and place over low heat. Add the vegeta-

bles, place on the lid and cook gently until just tender. Remove from the heat, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and set aside to cool.

■ Make an incision in the side of each lamb rump to create a good-sized pocket. Fill each with the cooled vegetables and hold together with a toothpick. Set aside while you braise the veges.

■ Braised spring vegetables: Blanch the broad beans in lightly salted boiling water for 1 minute, drain and refresh under cold water. Remove and discard the grey outer skins.

■ Place the oil, lemon juice, garlic and vegetable stock in a heavybased saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for about 10 minutes to allow the flavours to mingle.

Add the carrots, spring onions and half the sweet marjoram and simmer for 10 minutes until the carrots are tender. Add the broad beans and sliced fennel

Simmer for a further 2 minutes before adding the remaining sweet marjoram.

■ To serve: Place a roasting dish in the oven to heat.

■ Heat a frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Rub lamb with the remaining oil and season. Place in the hot pan and brown on all sides. Transfer lamb to the hot roasting dish and roast for 10-12 minutes for medium-rare lamb, or 15 minutes for lamb that is no longer pink. Remove from the oven, cover loosely with foil or baking paper and a clean tea towel and leave to rest for 10 minutes.

■ Slice lamb across the grain and serve with the braised spring vegetables, all their juices and roughly chopped fennel fronds.

The missing sounds of Anzac

I

f people think of the most characteristic sound of a military ceremony, they probably imagine it to be a bugle sounding the Last Post. Yet Ashburton’s earliest Anzac, and later Armistice, Day commemorations were silent in this respect.

The Last Post is the final call regulating a soldier’s day and no doubt the most welcome – to prepare for rest. The regulatory calls were the soldiers’ wristwatch – from the early morning Reveille, through parade calls, meal calls, to the fragmentary two-note Lights Out a little after the Last Post.

Many New Zealand buglers of World War One began their training in the pre-war cadet movement. Even junior cadet companies had buglers whose abilities were tested in competitions. After furthering their experience in the senior cadets and territorials, there was a body of skilled players nationwide at the outbreak of war. Few, if any, New Zealand regiments departed without several buglers attached to the individual companies.

The Last Post has become detached from its original function. This was a two-step move.

Even before World War One it had become the final tribute at a military funeral, sounded across the open grave, not signalling the end of a day but the end of a life.

How many times would it have been heard that way, from Egypt to England, during the war years? But the call might also be sounded belatedly – at the dedication of a home-town memorial.

Whatever the case, the essential element of an individual tribute was retained.

In Ashburton, the Last Post was heard at military funerals of returned soldiers from 1916. It was first sounded in June at the funeral of Corporal J. Pickering.

In October, 1918, four buglers from the senior cadets sounded the call at the memorial service for Captain A. J. Childs in St Stephen’s Church.

Further change came when commemorations began. The Last Post was sounded as a tribute for all fallen soldiers. In the public arena it became more and more familiar and ultimately one

of the most characteristic sounds of Anzac Day. However, in Ashburton it was first heard only in the Anzac service of 1919 as the military protocol of the local commemorations loosened, after Armistice and as the war’s end approached.

The first Last Post Fittingly, that first Last Post was sounded by D. H. Moore. A bugler in the Ashburton High School cadets, and then the Ashburton Guards, he was among the earliest Ashburton enlistments and sailed with the first reinforcements. Moore saw service at Gallipoli in the first weeks of the campaign, where he bore arms as did all buglers, and was wounded

and returned to Ashburton in 1915.

Back home, Moore became closely associated with the Last Post. He played the call again in 1920, and very likely at the first service at the soldiers’ plot in the cemetery in 1921, and was in the ensemble of buglers at that year’s afternoon ceremony in the Ashburton Domain.

Since then many have played the Last Post at Ashburton’s commemorations. Venues have changed and the bugle has often been replaced by the cornet. Yet that “call of remembrance”, as the Guardian described it in 1921, still makes its impact and its tribute is unaltered.

The volley The companion to the Last Post at the close of a service, a salute of three volleys from a firing party, was also transferred from the ceremonial trappings of a military funeral. Again there was the widening of the personal tribute. Like the Last Post the sound of the volleys was missing from Ashburton’s earliest commemorations and it, too, appeared as military protocol lessened.

A firing party was to be included in the domain Anzac service in 1920, but wet weather forced

the service into the Arcade. While the Last Post may have benefited from the building’s resonance, rifle shots would have overwhelmed. There was no difficulty next year. The firing party from the 2nd (S.C.) Infantry Regiment did its duty.

Eventually the domain Anzac service moved to an in-door venue.

The volleys then became part of the commemorations at the soldiers’ plot and for many years firing parties came from the High and Technical Schools’ cadets.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of the First World War, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return – almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 – the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men. The Ashburton Museum with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, has erected in front of the Museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. An original flag is on display in the museum. After the cessation of hostilities when the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918, a number of other soldiers, including some from Ashburton, died from wounds received, from illness and from accident.

Any doubts concerning Jones’ future have vanished after victory against South Africa was followed by Saturday’s 16-15 defeat to New Zealand, nudging the team back on course after a torrid year.

Next up at Twickenham are Japan, who Jones coached to the greatest upset in rugby history when South Africa were stunned 34-32. Brave Blossoms captain Michael Leitch said recently “we’ve been bullied a lot by Eddie and would like to give it back by beating England as a sign of gratitude”.

Girls come through ‘baptism of fire’ Mid Canterbury’s first ever under-15 girls’ sevens team took to the field for the first time at the weekend.

The side played in Timaru at the inaugural South Island Girls’ Under-15 Sevens tournament at Alpine Energy Stadium and after

a busy weekend where they faced tough challenges from South Canterbury, Otago, Canterbury Country and North Otago, managed to beat West Coast in their final game.

The Ashburton side’s captain Naomi Sooaemalelagi was also

named in the tournament team.

Mid Canterbury Rugby Union (MCRU) rugby development officer Jason Ree said five of the 10 girls who formed the team had never played before, so it was a baptism of fire, but they grabbed every opportunity and made the

most of the occasion.

Under the coaching of Johnny Galbraith the team went ahead in leaps and bounds and Ree said they all enjoyed the weekend.

The tournament was taken out

by Otago, with South Canterbury finishing second.

Partnership proves a winner

Des Kruger and James Southby produced Mid Canterbury’s highest ever third wicket partnership against Canterbury Country to help their side to a six-wicket victory in a 60-over cricket match in Rangiora on Sunday.

Canterbury Country won the toss and batted first at Mainpower Oval, and all 10 of their wickets fell from the same end as Deon Biggs and Mid Canterbury

debutant Will Graham regularly claimed scalps to restrict the home side to 206 all out off 54.3 overs.

Biggs claimed a wicket on the first ball of the match and he and Graham both went on to finish with five wickets, with Graham taking 5/28 in a man of the match performance, and Biggs taking 5/38.

In reply, Mid Canterbury also lost a wicket early with William Southby out with the score on

just one, and Nick Gilbert was the second man to fall at 25/2.

But that brought Kruger and Southby together at the crease and their combination proved unstoppable.

The pair put on the record partnership of 155 before Kruger fell just shy of making three figures himself, caught by Rupert Young off the bowling of Will McFarlane for 91.

Southby was eventually out for a superb 78, with the Mid

Canterbury score on 203, leaving another of the side’s debutants Archie Redfern to knock off the remaining four runs required for victory in the 42nd over.

Mid Canterbury now has one more 60-over warm-up match – against North Otago in Ashburton this Sunday – before beginning its 2018/19 Hawke Cup campaign against South Canterbury in Ashburton the following weekend.

Rain in the desert no pleasure for Black Caps The Black Caps have missed out on the opportunity for a rare overseas series victory, with their hopes of glory being vanquished by something even more unique.

Their ODI series against Pakistan has ended in a 1-1 draw, after the third and (supposedly) deciding one-dayer in Dubai was abandoned due to rain.

Yes, you read that right – rain.

Down it came with the Black Caps at 35-1 in their chase of 280, and the players never returned to the pitch, leaving the series drawn.

Whether that classifies as a missed opportunity for the Black Caps depends on your perspective.

Chasing 280, having already lost Colin Munro, and with captain Kane Williamson absent due to a minor groin strain, a victory was probably unlikely.

However, George Worker and Henry Nicholls had started strongly, and both sides would have wanted to fight for a deserved result on the field, rather than the damp conclusion they were eventually given.

It ends an ODI series which – much like the Twenty20 series before it – contained some positive signs for the Black Caps, just without the ultimate results new coach Gary Stead would have liked.

“You don’t come this far and expect to be rained off in the middle of the desert,” laughed Stead.

“280 was always going to be a tough ask but with a bit of drizzle on the wicket it actually quickened it up a bit, and that would have been in our favour.”

Stead had particular praise for Lockie Ferguson, whose stock is rising after another impressive effort yesterday.

The speedster claimed his first international five-wicket bag, taking 5-45, albeit it with three of his scalps coming in the last over of the innings.

However, his pace has proven problematic throughout the entire series, and he looks to have jumped Adam Milne and Matt Henry into the Black Caps’ top three seam options in the 50over format.

The will-he won’t-he scenario surrounding Conor Murray has taken another intriguing twist with Steve Hansen confidently predicting the world-class halfback will make a surprise return this weekend.

Murray hasn’t featured since Ireland secured their first three test series win in Australia in June due to an apparent neck issue. “I’m assuming Conor Murray will play so they’ve got a good spine,” Hansen volunteered. “He and [Johnny] Sexton are two of the best players in the world so they’ll drive them around the park.”

Laumape gets call-up Sonny Bill Williams is staying on tour, with the All Blacks hopeful he will recover from his shoulder injury to face Italy next week.

Ogier feeling heat He’s won the last five World Rally Championships but Sebastien Ogier has never had to fight for one like this. The Frenchman’s second placing at last month’s Rally of Spain took him past Belgium’s Thierry Neuville by just three points going into the finale around Coffs Harbour this weekend. In previous years Ogier has cruised through Rally Australia with the title already secured but this time it can all come undone when he tackles the dusty forestry roads on NSW’s mid-north coast as series leader from Friday.

In brief Lee just misses Kiwi golfer Danny Lee has fallen just short of his second PGA Tour title, finishing second at the Mayakoba Golf Classic on the PGA Tour.

Lee gave eventual winner Matt Kuchar a massive fight down the stretch at the Mexican event, but Kuchar just clung on to win by one shot at 22-under par, ahead of the charging Lee, who shot a final round six-under 65. Lee will still receive a big boost from his performance – it sees him leap to 10th on the FedEx Cup ladder.

World’s best at nines The NRL is hoping the game’s best players will play in next year’s inaugural Nines World Cup which is likely to be staged in Sydney.

The tournament was a key plank in the calendar agreed in-principle by the Rugby League International Federation in the UK yesterday.

It’s planned that the tournament will be held at the end of the NRL season.

Kiwis finally nail it

By DaviD Skipwith The Kiwis saved their best for last as they upset England’s hopes of a series whitewash with an impressive 34-0 win in the third test at Leeds yesterday.

After patchy performances in the first two test defeats the Kiwis finally clicked with their dominant display at Elland Road, embarrassing England and restoring some pride in the black and white jersey.

Desperate goal line defence contained England’s attack and for the first time in the series the Kiwis dominated England’s forwards to control the ruck while quicker play-the-balls put their playmakers on the front foot.

Kiwis coach Michael Maguire would have been thrilled as his side nailed almost every scoring chance with first-half tries to left wing Ken Maumalo, second rower Isaac Liu and outstanding halfback Kodi Nikorima helping them carve out a dominant 18-0 halftime lead at Elland Road.

Maumalo’s second four-pointer gave the visitors the perfect start to the second half and England were unable to reply before Kiwis front rower Jesse Bromwich and interchange forward Joseph Tapine both scored late tries.

Five-eighth Shaun Johnson kicked four conversions from five attempts before interchange forward Isaiah Papali’i banged over

the last goal after coming off the bench to make his test debut.

“Our families, country and fans deserve that so it’s good to get at least one win over here,” Kiwis captain Dallin Watene-Zelezniak said post-match.

A relieving penalty helped the Kiwis wrestle back the momentum before Nikorima sent Liu bursting through to score beside the posts with Johnson’s second goal extending their lead to 12-0 six minutes before halftime.

The Kiwis continued to lift their intensity and repeatedly forced England to work it out of their left corner before Nikorima cut through the middle to score their third to go to the sheds up 18-0.

A red-hot start to the second half saw the Kiwis power downfield and a cross-field kick from Nikorima allowed Maumalo to climb above McGillvary to score his second and all but kill off any hopes of an England comeback.

Three penalties in a row cost the Kiwis when Waerea-Hargreaves was marched for a flop on England hooker Josh Hodgson, but the visitors lifted once more and Makinson blew a golden chance on the next set when he stepped on the sideline as he headed for the corner.

The Kiwis forwards continued to outshine their opposites with Bromwich and Tapine both breezing through some weak defence to score to cap a remarkable all-round performance.

Nishikori downs Federer Roger Federer’s hopes of winning a record-extending seventh ATP Finals title have suffered a blow as Kei Nishikori stunned the Swiss great in their round robin opener.

Federer began calmly but his usually smooth game began to fray at the end of the first set and fell apart in an error-strewn second to go down 7-6 (7-4) 6-3. Unsurprisingly the match ended with a Federer mishit, his 34th.

Showboater rebuked Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s delight at his team’s 3-1 derby win over Manchester United did not stop him from delivering a strong message to Raheem Sterling over his showboating at the end of the game. With City 3-1 up in the final minutes, Sterling had the ball deep in the United half but, rather than take the ball to the corner flag, the England forward produced some fancy-footwork which angered United’s Juan Mata, who appeared to believe that Sterling was taunting his team.

Draw will aid the roughie

Alan Neumann is heading to Addington today feeling a little more hopeful than he is confident.

The well-known business owner will take centre stage during one of the biggest occasions of New Zealand Trotting Cup Day when the three-year-old pacer, Star’s Tonight – who he owns with brother Ian, John Slack and Sue Langdon – lines up in the Group One $170,000 Sires’ Stakes Final during the middle part of the day.

At 31-to-one, bookmakers aren’t giving the Ashburton owned pacer much chance, but his odds don’t truly reflect his chances.

The tough pacer has been sensational in all three starts this campaign, including a massive sixth last start when asked to race three-wide without cover for the last lap.

And the best part is that there’s no chance of that happening today.

Star’s Tonight has drawn the coveted ace position for the 1980 metre event.

“It’s the draw we wanted,” Neumann said.

“Now the rest is up to fate really, we can only hope for the best.”

The Robert Dunn-trained pacer has the added bonus of having his stablemate, Heisenberg, drawn next to him and as a noted speedster there’s every possibility he may be the early leader,

Bookies aren’t taking any chances with star trotter Speeding Spur in today’s Group 1 $100,000 New Zealand Trotting Free For All at Addington. He’s a $1.65 shot and punters seem happy to lap that price up. One who isn’t, though, is Ross Paynter, the man who trains Lemond. The proven short-course performer, who holds a national record over 2200-metres, has drawn the coveted ace barrier for the 1980-metre sprint trip. That potentially gives his driver, Maurice McKendry, the advantage as to how the race pans out.

Dunns ready to race Robert Dunn feels like he has already won going into harness racing’s biggest day of the year.

Because taking 17 horses to New Zealand Cup day at Addington today, five of them for the $800,000 holy grail itself, is beyond what Dunn could have realistically hoped for at the start of the season. “Back when we nominated our ones for the Cup I knew we would get two in, all going well, and would have been thrilled to sneak another one in,” admits the inter-island trainer.

“But to get five into a New Zealand Cup is special. I feel very satisfied for our owners.”

There’s a bus load of supporters going up together for the day and Neumann is confident that

they may be able to bring the Sires’ Stakes trophy home with them, no matter whether Star’s Tonight wins or not.

“Gavin Douglas is coming up with us and he’s got Ultimate Sniper who’s just supposed to win, so if it’s not us – let’s just hope it’s him.”

Mid Canterbury’s NZ Cup Day chances We take a look at Mid Canterbury owned, trained and or driven runners throughout the 12-race card today at Addington for New Zealand Trotting Cup Day. Race 1: With local owners there will be plenty of eyes on the well-supported Scarlett Banner (13) in the opening race of the day.

Race 2: Ricky May carries the hopes of the Mid Cantabrians here with his drive on the very talented Bettathanfast (16).

Race 3: N/A Race 4: Again, the attention is on Ricky with his drive on likely favourite Pat’s Delight (8) for West Melton trainer, Cran Dalgety.

Race 5: Gerard O’Reilly holds a strong hand in this race with the promising Miss You (9) who will start near to favourite. De Lancome (11) is owned by a host of Mid Canterbury identities and will be a blowout chance from the second line, while Ricky drives Shezacullengirl (12).

Race 6: Local thoroughbred girl Ashley McKay has a chance here with Hey Yo (9) who she part-owns and Ricky thought he wasn’t the worst knockout hope with Everybody Knows (11).

PART TIME REPORTER The Ashburton Guardian has an opportunity for a reporter to write for its “Timaru App”. Following on from the success of the Ashburton and Selwyn App’s.

We are looking for a person with enthusiasm, passion and who has the ability to write strong news stories and community news stories.

The position could be either part time or as a paid contributor on a per story basis.

Ideally, you’ll be experienced with interviewing all walks of life from within a local community, local primary school kids, councillors to business owners.

We want a reporter who can work under their own initiative, sourcing news and features, but who is also happy to take instruction. A strong understanding of the mobile news platforms and workings of social media is a must, along with the ability to take great photos and video.

You’ll be 100 per cent self-managing.

When you’re one of the biggest names in harness racing on the eve of the biggest day of the year, what do you do to escape it all?

If you’re Ricky May, you sling the keys off the hook and jump on the tractor and head out to do some work.

Yesterday the Methven horseman was just like hundreds of other farming folk around the district – at home out on the fields, getting things done and enjoying the warm weather after the deluge late last week.

Today though he slips from the rural life to the hustle and bustle of one of the biggest social events on the calendar in New Zealand, Cup Day at Addington, where he will have literally tens of thousands of eyes firmly fixed on him as he plies his trade in his other love, harness racing.

But May isn’t just another one of

the 50-odd drivers who will be in action today at Addington.

He can walk around with a bit of a mantra following him, because the race everyone is there to watch, the New Zealand Trotting Cup, is colloquially known as his Cup, given the fact he’s the most successful driver in the race’s history, with seven victories over a three decades long involvement.

Ask the punters though, and May hasn’t got much hope with his drive this year, A G’s White Socks, with the speedy pacer a $23 chance in today’s $800,000 Group One feature.

He disagrees.

“If the right horse turned up on the day, it wouldn’t surprise me if ran a really big race,” May said.

“He felt really good at the Cup Trials last week – but he’s had an interrupted build-up and they do say that this is a race you don’t want to go into having had a few problems along the way.”

A G’s White Socks is trained by Greg and Nina Hope at Woodend Beach and is a multiple Group One winner, so holds strong credentials for the race, but his biggest stumbling block has been his ability to pace away cleanly from the stand – something that’s never been a major issue for him in his career up until recently.

“He’s usually really good, he’ll hit his hopples and really run – but he’s just been getting it wrong.

“He went away and then galloped at the trials last week which is a bit of a concern, but we just have to hope he’s on the right foot when they let them go and then he should be ok.”

May has had 24 drives in the Cup over the years for his seven winners and two other placings, and has been on board some of the most memorable Cup winners ever including Inky Lord, Monkey King and Terror To Love.

This year’s contest is a wide-

open affair though with no standout and May is predicting the best run on the day might be what determines the result.

“It’s hard to put one on top really, there’s quite a few winning chances which is great for the race,” he said.

“Hopefully it’s me.”

While the Cup is the main event on a star-studded menu of racing action for the day, May will also be hoping to be a big player in two of the other main features as well.

He has picked up a drive for leading trainers Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen in the $170,000 Group One Sires’ Stake Final.

His steer, A Bettor Act, was an emphatic winner last time out, but meets some pretty smart types – which will make the task that little bit more tricky.

“He looks like he’s good enough to run a big race, but we just need to slot ourselves into the right

place at the right time. Hopefully we can get a nice trip and he can unwind on them up the straight.”
