Pharmacy picks up post

Postal services are about to return to Allenton, albeit in a new and streamlined form.

Last month NZPost and Kiwibank withdrew postal and banking services from the suburban shopping centre on the back of the pending retirement of Postshop owner Brian Collins.

But from next month the Allenton Pharmacy will add the title “postal agency” to its business card.

Ensuring the postal service is retained in Allenton was a top priority for pharmacy owner Sean Reilly.

“We had so many customers who said they were disappointed the service had gone. We wanted to do something to help, to keep the service in the shopping centre,” Mr Reilly said.

As well as keeping the service in the community, a postal service was a good fit in the pharmacy and taking it on was a good business decision, he said.

The new postal agency will not have the full range of NZPost services – vehicle registration, bill payment and Kiwibank services will now only be available at the Post Shop in Ashburton.

Most retailers in the shopping centre were canvassed to gauge their interest in taking the agency work on and most were keen, Mr Dillon said.

“Our key focus was profile and we wanted somewhere with

good access for postal boxes.

We did consider everyone, we always do but this is the perfect site.”

An area in the pharmacy will be dedicated to post products, with a modular unit carrying postal bags, and forms for mail to be redirected or held.

“It’s a changing world around post now, but we’re doing everything we can to keep services in communities,” he said.

The Kiwibank ATM will remain in the old Postshop building until a new location is found.

Kindara was sponsored by Tauhara College in Taupo and named after their school and their sister school Kindai in Japan, Kiwi Encounter kiwi husbandry manager Claire Travers said. Kindara will stay at Wairakei until the bird achieves a stoat-proof weight of 1kg and then will go back to the Karioi Rahui Reserve on the southern slopes of Mt Ruapehu. “We’ve never seen a kiwi chick with such ginger colouring, it’s very cute,” Ms Travers said.

Mrs Wolowitz is dead The actress best known for voicing the unseen Mrs Wolowitz on The Big Bang Theory has died. Carol Ann Susi’s agent, Pam Ellis-Evenas, says the actress died in Los Angeles after a brief battle with cancer. She was 62. The veteran character actress made numerous guest appearances on TV shows since the 1970s. On The Big Bang Theory, she wasn’t seen on camera as the mother of Simon Helberg’s character, Howard, but her character’s loud voice with a Brooklyn accent was instantly recognisable. Susi was a beloved member of the Big Bang Theory family.

Fingerprint ID to soar Finger print identification - an increasingly standard security feature on new iPhones and other smart devices, which acts as the user’s password will become common place in the next few years, a visiting biometrics expert says. Dr Ted Dunstone said tech companies have identified the mobile platform as the future of payments, but one of the key issues is making a mobile phone a secure system; Apple has rolled out its Apple Pay service and other big retailers in the US are working on their own systems.

“The adoption of biometrics is on an exponential curve and is largely as a result of the financial services and payments industry,” said Dunstone. The core uses of biometric data to date have been largely confined to government agencies such as passports and visa application processing as well as in policing but the technology is now starting to be adopted in consumer level devices. “Those devices will not just use fingerprint recognition, such as in the iPhone and the Samsung - the latest version of Google comes with face recognition installed ... you can configure it so that if it sees your face, it won’t ask for your PIN,” he said.

Kenny’s last trip Down Under Country music legend Kenny Rogers has announced a tour of Australia and New Zealand and says that at age 76, it will certainly be his last Down Under. The Texas-born singer - whose crossover appeal has helped him top the charts with a string of songs including The Gambler, Lady and Islands in the Stream - said he was not retiring, but his JanuaryFebruary tour would be the last to Australia and New Zealand.

“For all of the travelling I’ve done around the world, Australia and New Zealand remain two of my favourite places to perform,” he said.

“They have a great sense of humour, and have treated me with respect.”

Jagger paralysed by grief Sir Mick Jagger was diagnosed with acute traumatic stress disorder after his longtime girlfriend L’Wren Scott died. Court documents filed this week as a part of a legal dispute between The Rolling Stones and the band’s insurers reveal the Stones postponed their Australian tour because Jagger was ordered not to perform for 30 days by a doctor, who diagnosed the 71-year-old with the stress disorder. The band’s lawyers claim Jagger was paralysed by grief. Jagger was in Australia with The Stones when he learned of Scott’s suicide in March this year. The Rolling Stones were forced to cancel their Aussie tour as a result.

Now the band is now embroiled in a $US12 million legal battle with their insurance company over lost earnings incurred by the axed dates.

Rental shortage raises prices

Renting a house in Ashburton now costs around one-third of an average household’s take home pay packet with up to four applicants for every vacant property.

The situation is as tight as real estate company owner Trevor Hurley has seen it.

His waiting list of would-be renters is endless and growing every day.

The property shortage is pushing rents up to a level that not long ago would have secured fully furnished homes, he said.

“The median for a three bedroom home is now $340 a week and that makes it very hard for people.

“We’ve got lists of names coming out our ears and people are waiting two or three weeks now before anything is available.”

And just because a property becomes vacant, that doesn’t mean they’ll be the lucky tenant, Mr Hurley said.

No longer do renters have the luxury of taking time to make up their mind about a property.

It’s a case of viewing and making a decision on the spot, he said.

“They have to make a commitment, pay the administration fee and only then will we be able to put it on hold.

“We used to rely on a person’s word but now we have to have the administration fee up front and that’s non-refundable.”

In Christchurch open homes were now common place on rental properties with many of these going to the market with no set price.

That’s a situation Mr Hurley can see on the horizon in Ashburton.

“We’re not there, but we’re not far off it. It’s very frustrating for everyone involved, but

we can’t pull houses out of thin air,” he said.

Current median weekly rents in Ashburton are $260 for a small flat, $300 for a two bedroom house, $340 for a three bedroom, $400 for four bedrooms and upwards of $420 for five bedrooms.

According to the 2013 Census, the median household income for the Ashburton District is $63,100 and the median personal income, $32,900 (both before tax).

A family on the median household income would now face an annual rental bill of about $18,000.

Trade Me’s property index puts the median price a little higher at $350 for a three bedroom house, up 6 per cent on October last year. Christchurch rents have moved 20 per cent since October 2013.

There are currently 17 Ashburton properties on the Trade Me website and 10 in Methven or Rakaia.

One woman who advertised several times in the Guardian last week for a three bedroomed property said she received just one reply.

She was already third in line for the house which is on the market for $340 a week.

Freak storm causes motoring mayhem

Mayhem struck the Methven Highway early yesterday afternoon when a ferocious hailstorm rolled across the area.

Cars slid off the road about 12.45pm as 15 centimetres of sleety hail piled up on the outskirts of Methven.

Lightning from the storm struck power lines and 468 people lost electricity in the Mt Hutt and Springburn areas.

The town of Methven did not escape, with loud thunder rattling windows and heavy hail falling.

Among those trapped on the road were Martin and Connie Close of Rakaia. Mrs Close said after having a coffee in Methven they quickly jumped into their car about 12.30pm because they could hear thunder. As they drove to Ashburton, they had to pull over along with other cars on the highway.

“Hail started to come down and it got heavier and heavier, to the point you couldn’t see out of the windscreen, there must have been snow in there and sleet,” Mrs Close said.

They were stuck on the side of the road for about half an hour, and it was a scary experience with thunder rattling their vehicle.

The road was impassable until tractors drove down it. They saw the tractors pulling out other vehicles which had slid off the road.

They managed to drive their car down the tyre tracks left by the tractors, and within five kilometres came into clear weather and sunshine.

Electricity Ashburton operations manager Ken Stirling said power was restored by 3.30pm to affected households.

air in the atmosphere across New Zealand.

While Mid Cantabrians may have been surprised by the isolation of the event, such was the

nature of thunderstorms.

“They generally are kind of hit and miss, so some areas would have got it and some areas would not,” Mr Gullery said.

Local meets for new clients

Work and Income staff have resumed a limited face-to-face meeting service for Ashburton clients.

Following the double homicide in Ashburton’s Winz office on September 1, clients have had to travel to Hornby or Timaru to meet case workers as the Ashburton office has been closed.

From Monday, new clients were able to meet with case workers at a temporary base in the offices of Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew.

Mrs Goodhew said she had been working for some time to find a place where a limited number of client-case worker meetings could be held, and decided she had space in her Allenton office that could be used for the purpose.

Bringing Winz client meetings into her office, however has meant the presence of full time security personnel.

The meetings are by prearranged appointment and are only for new clients.

“I see this as the beginning of a return of face-to-face services for Ashburton. It’s good

to get this under way, but existing clients will still have to travel until the new offices open next month,” she said.

Appointments were made through the Winz 0800 number and apart from providing office space, Mrs Goodhew said she had no involvement in the service.

A more permanent base for both Winz and Children and Young People’s services is being built in the Ashburton Police Station yard.

Winz staff will be working from the new Cass Street site later this month while Children and

Young People staff will move into the complex in February.

On Tuesday, seven portacoms which were shipped from Hamilton in early November were carefully positioned on site.

Ministry of Social Development regional commissioner Annie Aranui said the next stage involved fitting out the portacoms with electrics and plumbing as they moved towards the temporary site opening on November 24.

Once in place the portacoms will provide 390sqm of working space.

Marae health clinic back up and running

The Hakatere Marae health clinic opened its doors again yesterday after closing in September.

The first clinic was held yesterday morning and Dr Charlotte Cox resumed her role as the voluntary GP. The clinic will run between 9am and 11am every Wednesday morning.

One patient stopped by yesterday but Dr Cox said she was not concerned about numbers at this stage.

“I see it as doing things differently,” Dr Cox said.

She said the clinic was all about people having access to healthcare.

When the clinic began back in May there were issues with internet connectivity but Dr Cox can now work from her laptop on site.

As Dr Cox will be manning the marae clinic on Wednesday mornings she will extend her hours at Moore Street Medical Centre from 2pm to 8pm to see her registered patients.

“I am all for innovation,” she said.

In brief Fire calls The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a small vegetation fire on Seafield Road at about 11am yesterday morning.

Shortly before 4pm they were called to Hinds where a resident was having an issue with a fireplace.

Sent to jail 63 times A man who has been to prison 62 times has added another stay on top of that for going up to people’s homes in Wanganui and trying to get into cars. Robert John Barnes has 133 previous convictions and made it 135 on Tuesday after pleading guilty to two charges of unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle. Judge Matheson said.

He said a prison sentence was “inevitable” due to Barnes’ “horrific history”. He sentenced him to two months in prison with no release conditions.

Truck rolls down bank A man is being treated for moderate injures after his fertiliser truck crashed 100m down a bank.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said it appeared the fertiliser spreading truck had overturned and fell about 100m down a bank on Pongakawa Bush Rd about 11.30am. The driver was out of the truck and St John staff had treated him for moderate injuries, Mr Campion said. - NZME

Tramper rescued

Dr Charlotte Cox will again be the voluntary GP on hand at the Hakatere Marae health clinic which reopened yesterday.

A tramper who fell and injured himself was rescued from Kahurangi National Park yesterday.

The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was alerted to the injured tramper about 10pm on Tuesday. The tramper, from Te Aroha and in his 50s, fell about 10 metres while tramping. His two companions helped the injured man to Thor Hut in Kahurangi National Park where they used a satellite phone to raise the alarm.

The weather prevented the helicopter reaching the tramper last night.

Signs, barriers there to protect endangered gulls

Police are investigating vandalism of concrete barriers and a gate which protect the world’s most threatened gull species nesting on the Ashburton River.

Environment Canterbury biodiversity team leader Jo Abbott yesterday said protection work had been ramped up following a four-wheel-driver crushing nesting sites in the black-billed colony in 2012.

“Hopefully this latest act of apparent vandalism was done in ignorance of the reasons for the placement of the concrete barriers and the gate.

The barrier is there to protect an endangered species during the nesting season and enable

recreational use the rest of the time,” Dr Abbott said.

It appeared recreational users had removed concrete blocks and a securing gate on the river’s southern bank near State Highway One to gain access to the river.

She said the matter had been reported to the Ashburton police, and she appealed to anyone who saw anything suspicious last weekend or with information about those responsible to contact them.

Disturbing protected birds and destroying nests is an offence under the Wildlife Act 1953 which can result in imprisonment or a fine of $100,000.

Samuel John Townhill of Ashburton was imprisoned after

driving into the colony in 2012, the sentence of one month for each of two charges was to be served consecutively on top of a custodial sentence he was already serving for unrelated driving matters.

Ashburton branch Forest and Bird chairwoman Edith Smith said it was sad some fourwheel-drivers and trail bikers could not stop accessing the river from November to January when birds were nesting.

Forest and Bird erected signs in the area to let people know about the colony, and other birds along the river such as terns and dotterils.

“As soon as the chicks fledge we will take the signs down and ECan will remove the blocks,”

Recognised as ACET expert teachers

Two Mid Canterbury teachers have been recognised for their dedication and expertise as part of a nationwide search for expert educators.

The Advanced Classroom Expertise Teacher (ACET) programme was created to recognise teachers with exemplary classroom practice and to encourage experienced expert teachers to remain in the classroom.

The programme was created following an agreement reached last year between NZEI Te Riu Roa and the Ministry of Education.

Teachers were required to apply for the scheme with a 5000 word portfolio outlining why they should be selected and providing evidence of the work they did.

Mt Somers Springburn School teacher Pattie Ree and Netherby School teacher Cheryl Bodie-Rouse were two of 336 teachers recognised by the programme nationwide.

The new ACET teachers will get an additional $5000 on top of their annual salary.

Mrs Bodie-Rouse, who has been teaching at Netherby School for nearly 10 years, said she was “really excited” about being selected.

“It’s nice to get some written and financial recognition of the extra work that we do,” she said.

Mrs Ree, a teacher at Mt Somers Springburn School for nine years, said she was “elated” to get the nod.

“It was a big woo-hoo moment for me, it was great,” she said.

NZEI Te Riu Roa National President Judith Nowotarski said the programme was about recognition.

“NZEI has been concerned for some time that many of our top teachers spend less time in the classroom as they progress through their careers.

“We want to ensure that our

Thief ruins young cricketer’s fresh start

A thief robbed a Mid Canterbury senior cricket team player of his debut innings and the bat with which he scored some of his most memorable runs.

Josh Barnett will still get his time at the crease but he is worried about what has happened to the bat with which he scored his first five centuries in senior A grade cricket.

His helmet – autographed by former New Zealand cricket captain Daniel Vettori – was also in the gear bag that was stolen from the Holden Commodore he left parked on Burnett Street on Saturday evening.

“It’s the small, sentimental things that matter,” Barnett said yesterday.

“I can get a new kit but I can’t get another first century.”

He was enjoying a few cold drinks at Ashburton bar Kellys on Saturday, after a hot day playing cricket for Lauriston, when he unwittingly gave the thief their chance.

He left his phone, wallet and keys on a bar table during the evening. Some time that night, the keys were swiped and someone made for his car.

“I just assumed the keys were still in my pocket because they were full,” Barnett said.

“But when I went to unlock the door I realised it was already unlocked and I didn’t have the keys.

“It wasn’t the way I wanted to find it at all. It’s frustrating.”

He was supposed to debut for the Mid Canterbury senior cricket team on Sunday but,

with no gear, the former Waikato Valley Hawke Cup representative was unable to play.

Losing the bat was a big blow for Barnett. It gave him his first five senior centuries – and it had only just arrived in Ashburton.

“I thought it had been stolen after my last game up north but I had left it in the team bag and they gave me ring a few weeks ago to say they found it in the bag at their first training.”

As well as his cricket gear he is missing several other possessions, including his expired passport.

“I’m in the process of renewing it so I can go to Thailand for a cricket tournament.”

He has made a statement to police, who were going to check security cameras near where the car was parked, he said.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact the police.

Elderly woman killed in head-on crash An elderly woman has died following a head-on vehicle collision south of Wanganui yesterday afternoon.

Clausen said the crash occurred around 2.30pm on State Highway 3, around 10 kilometres south of Wanganui when a car driven by the elderly female crashed head-on with a van.

She was transported to Whanganui Base Hospital in a critical condition but has since died, Mr Clausen said.

The male driver of the van was in a serious condition and

was being treated at the same hospital.

The cause of the crash was not yet known and would be investigated by the Serious Crash Unit, he said.

Ormsby leaves jail New Zealander Leeza Ormsby has left the Bali jail where she was imprisoned on drug charges, AAP reported.

Ormsby has served a sentence of nine months in Kerobokan jail for possession of half a marijuana joint.

The Rotorua-born woman was met by two immigration officers and was carrying her own luggage, AAP said.

When asked how she felt, the 38-year-old replied, “Happy!”.

Media followed her to the car until she eventually said in Indonesian: “Saya mau tutup pintu,” (I want to close the door).

AAP said prison governor Sudjonggo met Ormsby for the first time when she said goodbye, and told her “not to come back here”.

Ormsby had reportedly joined a knitting group in prison and had a farewell gathering with friends in prison.

Ormsby, 37-year-old was sentenced in July to 10 months behind bars – five months less than the prosecution asked for.

She was arrested in February after being caught at the scene of a drug bust at a holiday villa in north Kuta. She was found to have a half-smoked joint in her handbag.

She faced up to 12 years in prison on drugs possession charges, but prosecutors recommended Ormsby serve 15 months.

Her defence successfully argued she be viewed as a drug user.

Under Bali law a drug user is seen as a victim, and provided some leniency by the courts.

She was also given credit for admitting her guilt.

Ormsby has been in custody at Kerobokan Prison since she was charged in May. - NZME

Age Concern Ashburton is backing a national campaign to combat door-to-door sales people.

Consumer New Zealand’s Do Not Knock campaign aims to fight back against “dodgy door-to-door dealers”. Age Concern Ashburton’s move comes after Age Concern New Zealand announced its support earlier this month.

Consumer New Zealand’s latest survey showed that 70

sales people phoning residents.

Mrs Tarbotton said that it is not in elderly people’s nature to be rude and they can find it hard turning people away – over the phone and in person.

She said she advises people to do it in such a way as to say “sorry but I am not interested”.

Consumer New Zealand CEO Sue Chetwin said Consumer NZ is looking into the issue.

“We get quite a few complaints about people being hassled over the phone,” she said.

For those that do want to keep door-to-door salespeople at bay, Ms Chetwin said the stickers can act as a form of trespass notice, and Consumer New Zealand is looking to make changes to the Fair Trading Act to make it an offence for sellers to ignore the stickers.

The deterrent stickers can be obtained in Mid Canterbury from Resene Ashburton and will also be available at Age Concern Ashburton from next week.

The one-day exhibition tours New Zealand annually, and features original signed prints by well-known artists.

They are available for a low price, this year it was $67 each, exclusively to youth. Magda Van Gils came up with the concept over 40 years ago, and tours the exhibition with her husband Frans Baetens.

Forty prints were for sale and with just a couple of hours of viewing time left yesterday the couple were pleased with the number of 37 potential buyers visiting.

The exhibition was in the old art gallery building.

The new art gallery is due to open some time in the New Year.

Air New Zealand’s departure from Westport is a “body blow” to the community, says Buller Mayor Garry Howard. “When you’re trying to attract new industry an air service is one of the parts you actually need.” Air New Zealand will exit Westport from April 28 next year as part of moves to revamp its regional services.

However, he was adamant Buller would continue to have an air service. “I’m absolutely determined we will secure some form of secondary service.”

MSD looks at benefits The Ministry of Social Development has signalled a need to “explore options relating to the age of eligibility” for NZ superannuation, and wants a review of benefit rates to tackle child poverty. DNA and a fingerprint on a screwdriver led to two men being accused of a North Island-wide crime spree, which included a destructive raid at the Kaeo Bowling Club, police say. It is understood one of the raiders left traces of DNA at the scene.

That, plus a fingerprint on a screwdriver left at another crime scene, led police to a 25-year-old Matamata man. He appeared in the Morrinsville District Court this week on 10 charges including burglary, theft and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle. Two people have been killed after a truck travelling over the Crown Range rolled yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the crash just after 3pm, after the truck rolled and hit a stone wall, police said.

The crash occurred near the summit of the Crown Range road between Wanaka and Queenstown.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said the truck carrying carpets had lost control on

a 25km/h bend and rolled on its side.

Two people were trapped inside the cab, and were found deceased when emergency services reached them.

The weather conditions at the time were challenging, with hail and snow showers, Mr Benn said.

Police said a serious crash investigation was under way, and next of kin were being advised. The deaths have been reported to the coroner.

The Crown range was expected to open about 9pm last night.

About 60 fire service staff battled a fierce blaze at a Northland plastics factory overnight Tuesday.

Fire Service northern communications shift manager Paul Radden said staff were called to the fire on Logan St in Dargaville about 9.30pm on Tuesday. The 16 metre by 25 metre building was well-involved in fire when staff arrived, he said. In total, 22 fire trucks and support vehicles from around Northland responded.

It took about three hours to put out the blaze.

Take care on the roads As people around the world remember victims of road crashes this weekend, road safety officials are urging Canterbury motorists to take extra care on the region’s roads.

It’s Canterbury A&P Show time which means a day off work for some tomorrow, and for many others, a day in Christchurch at the show or a chance to head away for a long weekend break.

Ashburton District Council road safety co-ordinator Aileen

Campbell said the combination of the show, the long weekend, and the summer holiday season meant there was likely to be a lot more people on the roads so vigilance was important.

“We are advising people to watch their speed and following distances and to expect other people to make mistakes at intersections. It’s all about driving defensively,” Miss Campbell said.

Canterbury Anniversary weekend also coincided with

the ninth anniversary of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims this year, and for the fourth time, the internationally-recognised day is being commemorated in Ashburton.

A public commemorative ceremony will take place at Smallbone Reserve on Sunday at 2pm.

“World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims recognises the losses that have happened this year and in previous years on our roads,” Miss

Campbell said.

It is also held to recognise the invaluable work done by emergency and support staff of organisations like St John, the police, the fire service, victim support and traffic management teams.

Anyone is welcome to attend and at 3pm an afternoon tea will be held at the Ashburton Fire Station.

The fire station will also be open to the public after the ceremony.

Morning tea shout thanks to Rangitata MP The coffees were on Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew yesterday.

She turned on a morning tea shout for people she described as the wheels that helped her understand her community.

For any MP, a good network of community support was important and a morning tea shout was a small way of letting people know how much she valued their support, she said.

“These are the people, the community groups and the agencies who help me do my job.

“It’s about saying thank you for the past 12 months.”

As hostess of the Bedrock Bar and Grill morning tea, Mrs Goodhew played waitress as well as hostess as she chatted with Maxine Hooper and Paul Thomas.

Hinds citizens Another alleged incident form their own association A new residents’ voice is about to be heard in the Ashburton District with the formation of a Hinds Citizens’ Association.

At a meeting last week, the foundations of the new organisation were laid and an inaugural committee will be elected at a second meeting on November 26.

Ashburton District councillor Stuart Wilson is the driving force behind the association and said the new group would be a way for Hinds people to feel they were having a say in the business of the district.

“When you look at what happens in other areas of the district, it’s clear people listen to the opinions of an organisation more than they do an individual,” he said.

The district already has resident’s groups in several rural villages including Rakaia and Mayfield.

The Hinds Reserve board has also undergone a resurgence with a new committee elected and plans under way to rebuild a toilet block in the domain. The council has had funds set aside for the work for some time.

An investigation of an alleged incident involving a police officer at the Cromwell police station has come to light, only a day after a former Central Otago policeman admitted using his police-issued iPhone to record a teenage girl having a shower.

Following a request for information, a police spokesperson said the Cromwell investigation was in its “early stages”.

The spokesperson would not be drawn on the nature of the incident, but no staff had been stood down while the matter was being investigated.

On Tuesday, a former policeman appeared in the Alexandra District Court and pleaded guilty to a charge of intentionally making an intimate visual recording of another person.

The man, who was given interim name suppression, was off-duty when the offence happened. He has since resigned.

Relieving Otago rural area commander Inspector Olaf Jensen moved to reassure the public after the court appearance on Tuesday that Central Otago staff were “doing some excellent work to build strong community partnerships and to keep the local community safe through their actions ... this is a difficult time for them and the community”.

Mr Jensen said the former colleague’s actions had shocked and upset staff and the community.

Police could not comment further on the incident at the Cromwell station, as it was standard procedure to not comment on an investigation when it was in its early stages.

The spokesperson declined to answer questions including when the alleged incident occurred, the gender and rank of the officer, if any charges would be laid, and who would conduct the investigation.

Smith’s victim ‘disappointed’ The man who was abused, and whose father was killed by escaped fugitive Phillip John Smith says he is disappointed with Corrections at not having done their job properly.

The man, who cannot be identified, spoke to Campbell Live in Australia.

He was sexually abused by Smith from age 10 to 13, and witnessed Smith stabbing his father to death during a horrific home invasion in 1995.

“It feels like we’re back to square one,” he told Campbell Live.

He told how Smith had harassed his family, by stalking their home for weeks.

“There was one time he popped his head through the window,” he said.

He described the night Smith entered the family home while on bail, and stabbed his father to death.

“I woke up to see him over my bed with a balaclava over his head and a knife at my throat.”

The boy’s father came running into the room.

“It was like slow motion. I remember him just looking at me, and making a noise and running at Smith,” he said.

“At the time I got stabbed twice in the back, on the way trying to get help from the family.”

He told Campbell Live he found it hard to believe that Smith didn’t mean his family any harm.

“He has threatened us, he wanted to do the whole family. He had a hit list to kill the whole family.”

The man said by moving to Australia, he didn’t believe he would ever have to encounter Smith again.

“I’ve had to try and rebuild my life from what he’s taken from us, and it hasn’t been easy,” he said.

“I finally feel that I’m finally getting somewhere in my life, and now he’s robbing us of it again.

“I’m scared of him, for my family as well.”

The man told Campbell Live he hadn’t slept since the day he found out Smith had escaped.

When asked whether he was taking any precautions, he said he was sleeping with a knife under his bed.

“I need answers. I can’t, me and my family can’t go through our lives, knowing he’s out there somewhere.”

When asked whether anyone from Corrections had contacted him, or apologised, he said no.

“I haven’t heard anything from Corrections. I haven’t been notified from them.

“When this dies down are they just going to just throw a blanket over it, and we’re meant to just carry on with our lives?”

Climate debate to heat up The US and China have set ambitious greenhouse gas emissions targets in a move that threatens to overshadow the G20 leaders’ summit and heap pressure on Australia to do more to tackle climate change.

As world leaders converge on Brisbane for a summit focused on growth and jobs, the world’s two biggest polluters yesterday announced a pact to reverse emissions and a determination to conclude a global deal in Paris next year.

Despite G20 countries representing 76 per cent of global carbon emissions, climate change is not listed on the summit’s official agenda.

Neither does a late draft of an “energy efficiency plan” to be released on Sunday mention the words “climate change”.

The G20 Brisbane Action Plan for Growth and Jobs - a compendium of action plans on topics from workforce participation to energy efficiency - lists Australia as leading talks on energy-efficient buildings, Japan on energy generation, Britain on networked devices and the US on vehicle standards.

Egypt convicts Germans over artefact theft for stealing pieces of an ancient scroll bearing the name of the Pharaoh Khufu as well as rock samples, the source said.

The Great Pyramid - also known as the Pyramid of Cheops - is the biggest and most famous of the three Giza pyramids. It houses the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu, and is the only surviving one of the seven

wonders of the ancient world.

Six Egyptians, including three employees of the antiquities ministry, two pyramid guards and the director of a travel agency, were also jailed for five years for aiding the robbery, the source said.

The crime was discovered at the end of 2013 by Egyptian authorities, who announced in

August that the missing fragments had been recovered.

The New York Times, which first reported the disclosure yesterday, said Smith probably did not have sex with all the wives because some were “sealed” to him only for the next life. The Mormon essay said the oldest of the women “sealed” to Smith was 56, and the youngest was 14.

“Marriage at such an age, inappropriate by today’s stand-

ards, was legal in that era, and some women married in their mid-teens,” the Mormon essay states.

According to the essay, “an angel appeared to (Smith) three times between 1834 and 1842 and commanded him to proceed with plural marriage when he hesitated to move forward”.

During the third visit, the angel supposedly threatened to kill Smith with a sword unless Smith obeyed the command-

ment. The Times said Smith has long been portrayed by the church as a loyal partner to his first wife, Emma. An official Mormon website says that today, “the practice of polygamy is strictly prohibited ... as it has been for over a century”.

But polygamy was part of the church’s teachings for 50 years during the religion’s early days.

The Mormon church claims 15 million members worldwide.

A fugitive from justice has preferred life as a monk over jail, holing up in monasteries in northeastern Greece for eight years before police finally tracked him down, police say. The 48-yearold man, convicted of financial misdeeds in 2011, hid out on the remote Mount Athos peninsula, an autonomous monastic state, where he passed himself off as a novice monk, police said yesterday. The unnamed former accountant for two Athens suburbs was arrested at a Mount Athos port while attempting to move from one monastery to another.

He was convicted in absentia of embezzling some nine million euros of public funds between 1995 and 2002.

Ebola patient cured The last known ebola patient in the United States, a New York doctor who contracted the virus while treating infected people in west Africa, has been released from hospital after being declared cured. Craig Spencer, an emergency room doctor in New York, appeared at a press conference yesterday flanked by Mayor Bill de Blasio to announce that he had been discharged from Bellevue Hospital - one of a handful of US medical facilities designated to handle ebola.

Help: Housing solutions needed Sue Newman

H

aving a roof over your head, a warm bed and sufficient food on the table, they’re basic human rights that most New Zealanders take for granted.

For a growing number, however, life holds no such certainties. And that struggle to find life’s basics is not just limited to big cities, Ashburton has its own problems with homelessness and hunger.

Our average rental is now around $350 a week and waiting lists show no sign of easing. At the same time our population is growing and our community includes more families with larger numbers of children.

The so-called average Kiwi family of two or three children is no longer the norm and if it’s tough for traditional families to find a home, it’s almost impossible if you have five or more children.

Increasingly we hear stories of people living in garages, tents and cars, families bunking in with other families, and where securing a rental means beating the hordes to be first through the door.

Yes, we’re building new homes and yes, there are houses changing hands on the property market, but no one is doing anything to address the yawning gap most acknowledge is there – bigger properties and affordable rentals Someone, some organisation, entrepreneur or philanthropist has to pick up the social housing ball. Housing New Zealand clearly does not have plans to expand its property portfolio in Ashburton but listen to any of the social agencies and they’ll tell you that what we have is not enough.

The private rental market isn’t meeting community need, but no one is picking up the slack. The need has been identified, there are plenty of suggestions on the ways it can be met, but the gap between idea and reality is a financial leap no one seems able to bridge but as a community with a heart we have to find solutions.

have recently been going through the process of making appointments at school. Part of that involves interviews and preparing questions for the applicants. Not wanting to reinvent the wheel, I asked Dr G. Oogle for advice.

One of the gems I came across was Expectations for Australian Bush Teachers in the 1880s.

Imagine the top five most demanding bush teacher expectations being put to a teacher of today.

“Welcome Miss Charlotte Highly-Qualified-Deeply-InDebt Livingstone. Thank you for coming to the interview today; I have a series of questions for you.”

“Question One. Can you cook on an open fire?”

“Sorry, the question was can I cook on an open fire? Yes, I guess so, we didn’t seem to cover that at university but I believe I could and each child would have a learning intention to go with my cooking. I would send out a notice to parents first outlining the health and safety aspects of the lesson and we would research open fires as well, before we began cooking.”

“Question Two. How would you keep the school property free of goats and cattle?”

“What! I mean pardon? Are they are problem? I mean, are they my responsibility? Well…

I guess... I would ensure the safety of the children first.

I would follow your school protocol for unwanted visitors on the school grounds. Using one of my release days I would work with the property subcommittee and compile a strategic plan that would become part of the school charter. I could also begin an inquiry unit on Exotic verses Native Animals. Does that answer the question?”

LVR to remain in place for now

By AdAm Bennett The Reserve Bank is eyeing measures to discourage speculators from buying up multiple houses as it acknowledges its loan to value ratio (LVR) restrictions have favoured investors over first home buyers.

Presenting the bank’s six monthly Financial Stability Report yesterday, RBNZ Governor Graeme Wheeler said that while the temporary restrictions on low deposit mortgage lending had been successful in curbing fast rising house prices, the RBNZ would keep them in place for the time being due to demand pressure associated with strong inward migration.

Appearing before MPs at Parliament yesterday afternoon, Dr Wheeler faced questions from Labour’s housing spokesman Phil Twyford over the impact of the restrictions on first home buyers who mostly now have to save a deposit of at least 20

per cent. Mr Twyford cited research suggesting that “one of the principal effects of LVRs has been to clean first home buyers out of the market essentially giving speculators a free hand”.

Dr Wheeler said research showed an average of 19 per cent of house purchases over

the last decade were by first home buyers. That figure had only fallen to 17 per cent since the introduction of LVRs, albeit on a 13 per cent fall in volume of sales.

The RBNZ’s report says that the fall in sales was more pronounced among first home buyers while sales to investors

had remained largely constant which served to increase the overall proportion of properties they were buying.

Mr Twyford cited research suggesting that 45 per cent of property sales in Auckland were now to investors.

Dr Wheeler acknowledged “the issue is also around people who invest and buy multiple houses”.

“We have been thinking quite deeply about whether we need to introduce measures to discourage some of those practices”, he said.

The RBNZ had consulted with financial markets, realtors and investors, “and we’re currently exploring that in-house”.

However, Deputy Governor and head of financial stability Grant Spencer said that work was part of the bank’s overall assessment of risk weightings in the banking sector.

“So it’s not a particular reaction to the particular volume of

investors in the market right now.”

Meanwhile, Dr Wheeler said the RBNZ wanted to see an easing in currently strong net inward migration numbers before it will begin phasing out the LVRs. He said net inward migration had been consistently underestimated in forecasts and the bank was mindful that it may continue to be more of a factor than expected in the short term.

He said the restrictions had been successful with house price inflation nationally falling from just under 10 per cent to 4.9 per cent while in Auckland it had also halved from 17 per cent to 8.5 per cent thanks mainly to the combination of LVRs and interest rate increases.

“We ran the risk of a real bubble had we not introduced LVRs in October last year”, he told Parliament’s Finance and Expenditure Committee.

Milk payout confirmed at $5.30 Fonterra chairman John Wilson has affirmed the world’s biggest dairy exporter plans to pay its farmers $5.30 per kilogram of milk solids for the 2015 season.

Wilson affirmed the payout at Fonterra’s annual meeting in Palmerston North yesterday. It also expects to pay a dividend of 25-35 cents a share, making a total payment of $5.55 to $5.65.

The 2014 payout was $8.50 including a 10 cent dividend.

The Reserve Bank cited the reduced milk payout in its financial stability report, released on Tuesday. While New Zealand’s overall financial system remained sound, risks in the dairy sector increased as plunging global milk prices prompted a reduced forecast payout to farmers by Fonterra, it said.

“The forecast dairy payout for the coming season has been reduced significantly, and could result in rising loan defaults should the lower payout level persist,” deputy governor Grant Spencer said in a statement.

Wheeler said the bank hadn’t given any thought to imposing lending restrictions or ratios on dairy lending, and that about 10 per cent of farmers still have about half of the sector’s $33 billion in debt. The Reserve Bank expects dairy prices to recover early next year, supported by growing Chinese demand, though it said there is a risk of protracted weakness if global supply keeps expanding or if China takes longer to resume its forward purchasing.

Farmers had used last year’s

high price to repay debt, and the early signalling gave them time to manage down their costs, which helps mitigate the threat posed by the dairy sector.

Spencer said farmers’ deleveraging and higher farm prices meant average LVRs on dairy debt had reduced, meaning safety buffers in place on dairy farm debt have improved.

The Reserve Bank said farms using intensive methods on more marginal land and less able to substitute to feed produced on their own farms were particularly vulnerable, with limited scope to manage the downturn, and highly indebted farmers were likely to experience negative cash flow on the lower payout.

“B+LNZ Genetics is working on developing a range of tools that will make adoption of genetic information as easy as possible. Apps and other innovations are part of this strategy, streamlining the information and delivery of genetic information to farmers.”

Stock agent Graham Sidey of PGG Wrightson Genetics is already a fan of the app.

“It’s fantastic. I got a call from

a client the other day and they were looking for a particular composite cross. I looked up the app and found exactly the information they were after,” he said.

“It’s a great tool for people in the industry, especially with lots of different crosses of rams available – it’s good to see who has got what. Even within the traditional breeds, it’s useful to see who is selecting for which traits within SIL.” Consultant Jansen Travis of AgPartners says the app works as a convenient register of breeders.

“It’s like an online phonebook or contacts list,” he said.

“It will be great when making decisions around breeding objectives – identifying who is active in that field and might be of interest, whether that be breed, geographical area or attributes recorded for.”

Sheep breeder Matt Holden of Hawke’s Bay’s Kelso stud says the app is an innovative move on the part of B+LNZ Genetics, utilising the technology.

The app can be downloaded at either the Apple App Store or Google Play.

■ MEAT INDUSTRY

Farmers to hear from candidates Mid Canterbury shareholders in Alliance Group and Silver Fern Farms will have the opportunity to hear from farmer director candidates endorsed by the Meat Industry Excellence (MIE) group before the upcoming co-op elections.

As part of a series of farmer meetings scheduled around the country, MIE will host an event at the Heritage Centre in Methven at 2pm on November 24, where John Monaghan will be the guest speaker.

Alliance Group candidates Dr Mandy Bell and Russell Drummond and Silver Fern Farms candidate Fiona Hancox will also address the meetings, and be available

for questions and discussion.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) Genetics has developed a smartphone app that allows easy access to information on leading New Zealand ram breeders.

Called FlockFinder, users can search for ram breeders who are recording animal performance and conducting genetic evaluations using the powerful SIL genetic engine. Search can be on the basis of breed, geographical location, flock name, owner name or on traits being recorded.

B+LNZ Genetics general manager Graham Alder says the handy app will be helpful to both farmers and rural professionals supporting New Zealand’s sheep farming sector.

“One of B+LNZ Genetics’ core strategies is to enable farmers to make the most of new and existing genetic technologies – so they can breed the animals they need for their individual operation into the future,” Mr Alder said.

Dairy awards benefit all farmers

With just over two weeks to go until entries close in the 2015 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards, organisers encourage those dairy farmers who are keen to progress their career in the industry to enter.

National convenor Chris Keeping says 321 entries have been received to date in the s h a r e m i l ke r / e q u i t y farmer of the year, farm manager of the year and dairy trainee of the year competitions.

Entries are being accepted online at www.dairyindustryawards.co.nz and close on November 30.

Mrs Keeping says the 321 entrants are all eligible for the Early Bird Entry Prize Draw, giving them the chance to win one of six iPad and iPod bundles worth $2100. Two bundles will be drawn from the early entrants in each competition, so long as they progress through competition judging. The entry draw closed on Tuesday.

So far 61 entries have been received in the sharemilker/equity farmer compe-

tition, 100 in the farm manager contest and 160 in the dairy trainee competition.

“The popularity of the dairy trainee contest really does demonstrate the huge value entrants gain by having the awards on their CV and the skills and networks they gain from entering,” Mrs Keeping said.

“As someone has said to me, the benefits of participating in the Dairy Industry Awards are a bit like winning Lotto, but unlike Lotto everyone that enters is a winner in one way or another.”

Mrs Keeping says a record 572 people entered the awards this year. “It was a fantastic result and we would certainly like to think we can achieve that again this year. Entering the awards can help people identify ways to lift farm management and performance, and create opportunities in a time of forecast lower milk payout.”

■ DAIRY FARM SALE

Farm fetches $13m A South Canterbury dryland dairy farm and run-off has sold for approximately $13 million or around $22,000 per hectare. Situated at Sherwood, 20 kilometres north of Fairlie, the 587 hectare farm was sold by Ward Humphrey of PGG Wrightson Real Estate, Fairlie.

He said the property’s low cost structure attracted interest from wider Can-

terbury and North Otago before eventually selling locally.

The farm carries a milking herd of approximately 850 mixed age cows and has historically produced in the order of 400 kilograms of milksolids per cow per annum.

With average rainfall over the last 10 years of 974 millimetres, which is

spread evenly throughout the year, it sits in an area renowned for dryland dairy farming and the fact that there is no need for irrigation makes it a particularly worthwhile proposition, Mr Humphrey said.

■ CLASSIC CORTINA

eil Clemens has owned or, as he puts it, has been custodian of his 1965 Mark 1 Ford Cortina GT for 22 years, but his association with the car goes back well beyond that.

He first saw the Cortina when his brother-in-law Greg Harney bought it in 1970.

The Cortina was just five years old then, and yesterday was the 44th anniversary of the transfer into Greg’s name.

After about18 months Greg sold the car to his parents Leo and Jean, who enjoyed having it for the next 21 years.

The Cortina really suited Leo and Jean, and not only did they enjoy driving it but their family and grandchildren soon got to like it too.

It became a family favourite.

So much so that Neil their son-inlaw told Leo he would like first option if the car was ever sold.

One day he was given that option, and Neil and his late wife Margaret became the third family members to own the car.

After buying the Cortina Neil and Margaret didn’t use it all that much, but as time went by and after they moved from Methven to Ashburton, they started driving it more often, mainly for special outings like rallies especially events organised by the Vintage Car Club, which Neil is glad he joined.

The Cortina has another English classic stablemate – Neil also has a

Neil enjoys driving both cars and says they have brought a lot of pleasure to himself and others like his nephew Mark, who had them as wedding cars.

Production of the Mark 1 Cortina began in England in 1962.

Variants in various styles were produced, one being the GT version.

GTs were not produced in large numbers and over the years have become quite collectable.

Neil’s Cortina GT, which is in pretty much original condition, has a four cylinder engine coupled to a 4-speed manual gearbox.

Being a GT it has some additional equipment, like a full array of gauges.

Neil says “it’s a nice car to drive, quite peppy and the motor sounds great”.

It’s good that Neil sees himself as the custodian of this rather special car, because that means the Cortina GT is being appreciated for what it is and can look forward to the future it deserves, which will no doubt include a 50th birthday party next year.

The Cortina has always been a real family car. Neil Clemens and his sister Yvonne Clemens went to the recent car display staged as part of the Ashburton Domain’s 150th anniversary.

CORTINA MEMORIES

G

reg Harney, who started his family’s ownership of the Cortina GT, and the writer have been friends since being primer school classmates. We won’t say how long ago that was!

Always interested in special cars, the Cortina GT was an understandable choice of car for Greg.

Being family friends over the years since the writer has always been interested to see the car from time to time.

It also has a significance for our motoring sub-editor Steve Devereux, because his family and the Harney’s were next door neighbours.

Seeing the car next door may have been an early introduction to Cortinas for Steve.

Similar for the writer.

Our next door neighbours Harold and Mamie Dalley bought a brand new Ford Cortina in 1963 to replace their Ford Prefect, which in turn had

followed on from an Anglia.

I recall nice trips in all of those cars, but in particular I remember the drive to Rangitata Huts in their new car for a summer holiday in early 1964 at the Dalley’s bach.

Other memories from that holiday include Wayne Dalley and I taking their row boat out on the lagoon and being told (confirmed since) that in places the lagoon was 27 feet deep. Later Wayne had an outboard motor boat and skied on the lagoon.

A bit different these days!

They were idyllic times, Wayne had received a Kingston Trio record for Christmas which we played repeatedly, there were lovely meals - salads and salmon - and then at the end of the day it was wonderful being lulled to sleep by the sound of the breakers.

All too soon it was time to return home but the regret was lessened by the ride back in the gleaming new Cortina.

ord UK introduced the Cortina in 1962 and it quickly became a top seller.

The model name was inspired by an Italian ski resort, and five generations of the Cortina in a range of variants were produced before production ceased in 1982.

Ironically Roy Brown Jnr who was responsible for the failed Ford Edsel project and was subsequently banished to England designed the Mark 1 Cortina, but this time produced a car

which was an instant hit.

Because they were built on a solid platform and had strong running gear Cortinas lent themselves well to modification and racing.

They are still seen at classic car meetings where they attract attention and perform well.

During the initial design stage Ford considered producing the Cortina as a front wheel drive car, but eventually decided to use rear wheel drive which was more usual at the time.

A tasty versatile meal that can be served hot, warm or cold.

Serves 4-5 1T vegetable oil 1 bunch asparagus, ends broken off and sliced diagonally 1 large onion, finely chopped 2 rashers bacon, finely chopped 4 eggs 1 cup grated tasty cheese ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Heat oil in a heavy based pan.

■ Sauté asparagus, onion and bacon for 4-5 minutes or until onion is golden brown.

■ Line a 20cm square baking dish with baking paper and spray with oil.

■ Arrange vegetables in dish.

■ Beat eggs and pour over the vegetables.

■ Sprinkle with cheese.

■ Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until mixture is set and golden brown. Serve hot, warm or cold.

Well bowled. Big result for Allenton Ladies who won the 7’s competition. We had a fab day at Rakaia on Monday and clinched it. Thanks Rakaia for a grand day. Well done the Girls!!!! Our “Aphrodite” the rumour is, will be back soon as the plaster comes off her foot today after a spell of forced rest because she fell out with the telephone cord and lost. Perhaps a little more water! Looking forward to seeing you back on the green. JC has been good nothing to report about him except to commend him on the wonderful condition our greens are in, they are an absolute dream to play on. Love your work. Another sad occasion for our club we send our sympathy and thoughts to Judy Smith and family in the sad loss of Lindsay. A busy November with championships, tournaments, rep fixtures and club days to be played

Allenton Croquet The Allenton Croquet Club met last week for its monthly meeting and to play croquet and one guess as to what the weather did. Of course, it rained!!

The season is moving along well, in spite of the weather. We are having association play on Mondays and Saturdays and golf croquet on Wednesdays. The Flag Matches between the different grades in South Canterbury have started and as of last week Allenton hasn’t lost a game.

The Engravers Tournament which is sponsored by Ashburton Engravers, is on November 25 starting at 9am. Games are limited to two hours.

Our Christmas lunch date is Wednesday, December 10. Members please put your

contribution down on the menu.

The annual garden walk is Saturday, February 14; the gardens to visit are yet to be arranged and will be advertised shortly.

Because the weather badly affected our last “Have a go” day we are planning another for January 14 from 6-30pm—8pm.

In the meantime, if you have thought you might like to see what croquet is all about come and see us on a club day at our lawns at the Allenton Sports Club, Cavendish Street or phone 3084557.

Ashburton Petanque South Island Doubles Petanque Championship played October 25 and 26 at Caversham.

Ashburton had six players entered: Rewa and Stephen Kyle; Richard Browne and Jonathan Crum; Shannon Crequer and Emily Hickman.

Rewa and Stephen Kyle came 3rd in the bowl and the other two teams came 11th equal.

Shannon and Emily, both junior players who have only been playing for a few weeks, performed extremely well in their first tournament. They beat a top ladies team and a top Christchurch team.

Ashburton Rowing Club College Rowing - College crews attended the first regatta for the season at Lake Ruataniwha on November 1 and 2. Aoraki crews competed and although the weather meant a break in action on the Saturday and racing cancelled midmorning on the Sunday the majority of crews made it through to the A finals.

The first Canterbury Pennant Regatta for the season was held at Lake Hood this last weekend, a busy time for rowers with the next big event being our own Ashburton Regatta on November

29 and 30.

Masters Rowing - Five Masters rowers attended the Aoraki Regatta. Singles, Doubles and Quad master’s races were held alongside the College races. All those who attended were placegetters.

Corporate 8 Regatta – November 22 - This has traditionally been a half day event for crews from Ashburton and Timaru. This year it will be a full day and as well as three crews from Ashburton and four from Timaru, we are expecting about nine crews from Christchurch.

Crews are on the water training before work once a week, exercise sessions are also held weekly.

Committee news Regattas - Hosting any regatta is a huge undertaking and as well as the Pennant regatta held last weekend we have both the Corporate 8, November 22 and the Ashburton Regatta November 29/30 to set up and man. As a small club we are appreciative of any offers of help to put out lanes – usually done on the Wednesday or Thursday at 6pm and on the day we require personnel for safety boats, man the start help etc.

Lake Edge – This has been completed, thanks go to the volunteers.

Methven Bowls On Monday the first round of the ladies 7/s was played. It was a howling wind and playing was tough. Unfortunately we were well blown away by the Allenton ladies loosing 3/0. Better luck next time girls. The weather hampered bowls for most of the week.

The Men’s 3/3 interclub was also called off.

On Saturday the Junior 1 team had a win against Morrison Ave in the morning and lost to Rangiora in the afternoon. Rob’s team had a win against Papanui.

MSA Outdoor Bowls Unfortunately there has been little to report this week. The men’s section have been kept busy playing their games off. The women’s section seem to have come to a standstill.

On Saturday last the Men’s 2/4’s continued when they travelled to Cashmere and resulted in one win and one loss.

Back to business for May

Cairns being sued for $4.9m

New Zealand Trotting Cup Day 2014 will go down in Ricky May’s books as the one that got away.

Leading into Tuesday’s big race meeting, May and his cup drive Terror To Love were both heading for the record books.

May was already there, standing alone with seven winning drives, while Terror To Love shared the three-win podium with two other horses.

While May knew chalking up another win would be a big call, the punters were absolute in their belief that the man from Methven could do it again. The pair went into the big race red hot favourites.

What no one had counted on was Rolleston trainer Mark

Purdon and a little mare called Adore Me. She ran the two miles in record time, leaving the rest of the field in her wake.

With a day to reflect on the win that wasn’t, May is philosophical. The horse went well, the drive was good and the result was still pretty darned good, he said.

Yes, he’s disappointed, and yes he’s feeling a bit flat, but he’s putting that down to a huge day where he drove 10 out of 12 races.

May and Terror To Love went into the lead early, with May determined to put a gap between himself and the top runners. And that’s where they stayed until they turned for home.

“At the top of the straight he was a bit flatter than usual.

He started tapping his outside wheel, he got a wee bit too keen and that might have cost him a bit, but he kept trying. It was a huge ask to win again, but it would have been great for the horse if he could have,” May said.

Going into the race, there was no pressure, no expectations from owner Terry McDonald, he said. “He just said to me, ‘we’ve already won three’.”

Yesterday it was back to business on the May farm, with the usual early start to work his own horses.

The afternoon however, was spent on the couch, relaxing ahead of the next two days of solid racing.

He hasn’t watched a rerun of the race, but plans to do that, just in case he can spot any-

thing he could have done differently. He doubts there is. It was a good tidy race won in world record time.

“But it’s not the end of the world. We still got fourth, he still won $24,000. “The winner just went super good. We were still there and the horse tried really hard,” he said And there’s an upside to not winning - no late night celebrations at the Christchurch Casino and the phone isn’t ringing off the hook from the media.

And there’s always another day, another race meeting. He has a card of nine drives at Ashburton today and almost as many at Addington tomorrow.

And there’s next year.

While Terror To Love may not be in the cup field next year, it’s a dead cert May will be.

Mt Hutt College takes school cricket title A terrible weather forecast didn’t eventuate at the Ashburton Domain yesterday, allowing the Mid Canterbury Year 7 and 8 schools’ cricket tournament to go off without a hitch.

Three teams from Rakaia School, two each from Ashburton Borough School and Ashburton Intermediate and one from Mt Hutt College, played four rounds of 10 over games where every player got to bat, bowl and field.

Each person batted for two overs, with every wicket lost seeing three runs deducted from their team’s score.

In the end it came down to a team from Ashburton Borough and Mt Hutt College, with Mt Hutt taking the title by the narrowest of margins – 69 runs to Ashburton Borough 1’s 65.

Lalit Modi has issued legal proceedings against Chris Cairns to claw back $4.9 million in damages and costs.

Mr Modi, the former head of the Indian Premier League, has also applied to the High Court in London to have the libel verdict won by Cairns in 2012 to be set aside on the grounds of fraud.

In an email to the New Zealand Herald, Modi’s lawyer, Rajesh Vyakarnam, said: “Mr Modi has issued proceedings to set aside the 2012 libel judgment on the ground of fraud and is claiming the return of all damages and costs paid which are in excess of £2.4m.

“Mr Modi is still bound by the injunction awarded by Justice Bean and does not wish to prejudice the [Crown Prosecution Service’s] case against Mr Cairns or Mr Fitch-Holland. He will therefore not make any further comments at this time.”

Cairns was awarded $183,000 in damages after successfully suing Modi for libel for accusing him of involvement in corruption while playing in the now defunct Indian Cricket League in 2008.

But Cairns has this year been arrested and charged by the London Metropolitan Police with perjury in relation to evidence given at the libel trial.

It effectively means Cairns is now fighting on two fronts – a High Court trial, scheduled for next October, and a civil case against the man he took to court in 2012. While the cases boil down to whether Cairns was telling the truth when he told the High Court he had never been involved in match-fixing, the burden of proof could differ from one proceeding to the other.

MELROSE, George Ferguson, (Reg 8095 20th Battalion Middle East) – On November 11, 2014 at Ashburton. Loving husband and friend of Alyth and much loved father of Anita, Ruth and Brian Downie, Judith and David Sauermann, and Sharon and Graham.

Treasured grandfather of his grandchildren Sophie, and Kate Downie, Coneth Sauermann, George, and Unaiki Melrose, and Benjamin, Roimata, Rachael, Thomas, and Gage Hamilton.

At rest at his home aged 97 years.

The funeral service for George will be held at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Havelock Street, Ashburton on SATURDAY, November 15, commencing at 11.00am. Followed by cremation at the Ashburton Crematorium.

Another shot at shield glory

Mid Canterbury is to get another shot at Ranfurly Shield glory.

Current holders Hawke’s Bay yesterday confirmed the three Heartland Union challenges the Magpies had accepted for the 2015 rugby season and the Meads Cup winning Mid Canterbury side was among them, with the game scheduled for July 24.

As Meads Cup winners they are guaranteed the right to chal-

lenge and have taken up the opportunity for the second year running. In July this year they gave Counties-Manukau – the side which held the shield at the start of the 2014 season – a fright, not illustrated by the scoreline.

Mid Canterbury lost the shield challenge at Pukekohe 4610 – the union’s 13th unsuccessful shield challenge, but it was a huge confidence booster.

terbury’s challenge extremely seriously, particularly after watching that performance.

“It took us 44 years to win it again and we thought we would never win it again, and now we’ve won it two years in a row.

“We won’t be giving it away lightly,” Mr Bishop said.

The game is just a fortnight out from the start of next year’s ITM Cup so Hawke’s Bay was hoping to have some of its 16 Super Rugby players back in time for the Mid Canterbury challenge.

Mid Canterbury coach Grant Keenan – who was a member of the Hawke’s Bay NPC squad in 1993 – was Mid Canterbury’s assistant coach against Counties-Manukau this year.

He said the green and golds gave the holders a fright then, and would be working hard to do so again.

“We just had a poor start. A couple of tries down after five minutes, but we won the last 20 minutes of the first half and the last 20 minutes of the second half, we’ve just got to make sure

that we put all those 20 minutes together and play for the full 80,” Keenan said.

Mid Canterbury Rugby Union chief executive Ian Patterson said a Ranfurly Shield challenge was a great incentive for players, and something that not many players at Heartland level got to experience.

The Heartland union challenges will be against Wairarapa Bush on July 10, HorowhenuaKapiti on July 17, and Mid Canterbury on July 24.
