The Ashburton Trust’s chief executive Giles Beal has resigned. In a two-line statement, Ashburton Trust board chairman Alister Lilley yesterday announced the resignation but refused to provide any background information. He said the resignation was effective from May 8. Mr Beal is believed to have been on leave during the preceding three weeks. He confirmed he was no longer on the trust payroll and when asked why he had tendered his resignation said that with his five-year anniversary looming he believed the time was right for him to move on. “I feel I’ve achieved a lot while I’ve been there,” he said. While he is not moving into em-
ployment immediately, Mr Beal said he had several good job prospects ‘on the table’. Like Mr Lilley, Mr Beal would not talk details. The trust’s senior staff were called together at 8am yesterday and told their chief executive had resigned. Financial controller Robert Reid will fill the role of acting chief executive while the board decides how it will fill the vacancy. Details surrounding the resignation may have been scant, but Mr Lilley said that during his four-and-a-half years in the chief executive’s role Mr Beal had led the trust through a period of strong growth. “We’ve come out of a difficult time under his leadership and we’ve grown as a business under his leadership,” he said.
When Mr Beal was employed in August 2010 Mr Lilley said the trust was in its bank’s ‘bad boys’ club’; today it was a profitable business. “A lot has been achieved under Giles’ leadership of the trust.” The Guardian has lodged a request with the trust board under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act (LGOIMA) seeking background information around Mr Beal’s performance as chief executive and his resignation. Mr Lilley has responded to this request, saying he will take direction from his board, which is scheduled to meet on May 21.
