THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY
As police investigate a vicious Rottweiler attack on an autistic Southland man on Sunday, local dog owners are also being prompted to keep a close eye on their canines. An Ashburton woman, who wished not to be identified, said she too suffered a dog bite on Sunday, while running on Middle Road, Allenton. A dog was standing alone on the footpath when she attempted to run around it and avoid any eye contact. “But I felt it on my arm and thought – it’s just bit me,” she said.
After she didn’t respond, the dog then proceeded to run alongside her and bark at her for 10 metres or so. While the bite was not hard, it was definitely “not playful”, she said. “And I like dogs, so I probably handled it differently than if it had been someone else.” She had posted about the incident on Facebook to warn others, and intended to report it to Ashburton District Council. “I guess from the dog’s perspective I was running into its territory … but mostly I’m just a bit annoyed at the owner.
A community built around people.
“I just want them to be aware,” she said, “I don’t want it to happen to someone else.” Ashburton District Council were unable to comment on the incident, but advised that they will be investigating. They advise that any dog owner who fails to comply with Dog Control regulations may be issued with an infringement notice and fined.
