Reign of terror revealed in court

A five-week reign of terror by a masked gunman who shot two women during a horrific home invasion and held up five Canterbury pubs and bars – including one in Ashburton – was detailed to the court yesterday.

Douglas Anderson Roake, 23, admitted being the armed robber during an appearance at Christchurch District Court. Name suppression lapsed yesterday. Now, Roake’s brazen and terrifying crime spree can be fully reported.

The police summary of facts outlines how Roake – who has no criminal history – used high-powered firearms and balaclavas to target the licensed premises and demand cash from the tills, safes and gambling machines.

It began on March 10 this year, when about 10.40pm, he entered Christchurch’s Tavern Harewood wielding a pump-action shotgun in his left hand, and a black plastic rubbish bag.

His face was covered with a black woollen hat with the eyes cut out.

And he was wearing a grey hooded sweat-top with the hood up, underneath a black jacket, dark pants and rubber gloves.

Roake walked into the pub through the main door and pointed the gun at a female patron before approaching the duty manager.

He pump actioned the shotgun twice before telling the duty manager to put the cash from the safe and gambling machines into the bag.

“Stay still and I won’t hurt anybody,”

Roake said. The duty manager put $18,982 into the bag.

As Roake, a hammer hand from Ilam, ran out the front door, $2000 in cash fell out of the bag.

Four days later, he went to The Brickworks Bar, again with a long-barrelled pump action shotgun that police say he had obtained earlier that day.

Again, wearing the same dark clothes and mask, he went through the front door and demanded cash from the female duty manager.

As she filled his bag with money, he told her: “You’re doing well, ma’am.”

Roake fled with $43,000 and drove off.

New complex attracts big brands

National franchises are said to be eyeing up Ashburton as developers begin a new commercial complex in the town.

The 2915m2 modern twostorey office and retail building is being constructed on the east side of Cass Street, on the corner of Burnett Street, at the former Smallbone car sales site.

Developers say the new building, yet to be named, would complement the nearby $40 million Eastfield development,

and they are already in discussions with “several well-known national brands” considering tenancies.

The building is scheduled to open by June next year. It is a project by Burnett Land Holdings (BLH), a joint venture between Mid Canterbury’s Carrfields Investments Ltd (part of the agribusiness Carrfields Group) and legal services firm Tavendale and Partners.

would occupy most of the first floor, which had been designed to also incorporate the needs of clients and for holding business events.

The ground floor would have a flexible configuration with several spaces available, and incorporate space for a north-facing café. Some tenancies were confirmed, but besides Tavendale they were confidential at this stage.

There was still plenty of space available to potential tenants for both retail and office.

For Tavendale the shift to the new premises would double its office space, and the firm was bursting at the seams at its current site.

The site would have plenty of client parking.

Leete said economic confidence was growing in Mid Canterbury.

“The region is already benefiting from the recovery in dairy prices and encouraging prospects for beef and lamb will also strengthen Mid Canterbury’s growth,” Leete said.

“Ashburton has a bright future and it’s an exciting time to be part of it.”

Developers said in a press release that the development is designed by local architectural firm, Chilton + Mayne Architecture Ltd. Bradford Building had been appointed the lead contractor, with much of the subcontracting work to be completed by other local businesses.

Carrfields Group Managing Director Craig Carr said the new building was an investment in the town’s future.

Tree removal upsets residents

Nixon Street residents are saddened and surprised at the removal of about 20 old flowering cherry trees.

The Ashburton District Council was in the process of renewing the footpath on the street when it decided to remove the trees due to their damaging root systems.

Resident Julia Crosson said residents had been told the trees were going to be root pruned on one day last week, and the next day all the trees came down.

“I’m not mad about it, but it was a surprise,” Crosson said.

She understood some people would be shocked as the trees were beautiful, but others would be pleased as they would no longer be lifting the footpath.

Fellow Nixon Street resident Mervyn Hill said he was saddened by the removal, but not opposed to it. While the trees had been a nice addition, they were beginning to do too much damage.

The council’s communications team said two complaints had been received about removal of the trees.

Attempting to trim the root system would have had a detrimental effect on the trees, so cutting them down was the best option.

Council had received numerous complaints about the condi-

tion of the footpath over the years.

“Having to remove trees is not something we take lightly and would do our best to avoid,” Marilla said.

“We will be replanting Pyrus Bradford flowering pear trees in their place, which will have special root guards to prevent this type of damage happening again,” he added.

Drunk driver crashes into ditch A dairy farm worker who crashed his car into an irrigation ditch pleaded guilty in the Ashburton District Court yesterday to driving carelessly and with excess breath alcohol.

Fredilozo Mon, 35, recorded 513mcg when he was breath-tested after the accident on April 4.

Mon had been driving east on Mayfield Klondyke Road about 1.30am after a few drinks and missed the turnoff with Coskeries Road; he pulled to the left onto a wet grass verge and the vehicle slid through a fence, did a 180 degree turn and came to a stop in an irrigation ditch full of water, police said.

Judge Joanna Maze was asked to hold off sentencing until information could be obtained from the Philippines.

Mon has been remanded at large until August 7.

Kiahn Taine Taylor-Edwards yesterday admitted a charge of possessing instruments for car conversion and another of possessing a 15cm switch-blade knife.

He had 40 hours of community work added to an existing sentence.

Jayden Keith Moore admitted driving with excess breath alcohol on State Highway 1 at Rangitata on April 28. He recorded 683mcg when police stopped him after complaints from other motorists.

He was fined $700, ordered to pay $130 court costs and disqualified from driving for six months.

Michael Phillip Gorman, 21, was fined $600 after admitting driving with excess blood alcohol on Methven highway on April 23. A sample of his blood showed 129mg of alcohol per 100ml. He was also ordered to pay court costs $130, analyst’s fee of $109.25 and disqualified from driving for six months.

The judge said he could apply for a zero alcohol licence at the end of the disqualification.

A man who slapped his 13-year-old daughter and niece both around the back of the head after they snuck out at night to go into town admitted three charges

of assault on a child.

The man said he found the pair at an Ashburton carpark after discovering they were not at home.

He took the girls home but then admitted grabbing his daughter again when she went to leave the house.

He was remanded to August 7 for sentence, including restorative justice. All three still live in the same house.

Daniel Francis Baumber admitted a charge of assault with intent to rob at Caroline Bay in December last year and was remanded to August 7 for sentence, including restorative justice.

He said he had been drunk when he started following someone, demanding money then delivering a punch.

At gunpoint, he again demanded cash from the tills, safe and gaming machines from a female duty manager.

He again used the line, “You’re doing well, ma’am,” before leaving with $29,708.

Five days later he went back to The Brickworks Bar. Finding the door locked, he used a shotgun whose stock he’d sawn off earlier that day, to blast the glass door.

This time the haul was $12,000 and again he said: “You’re doing well, ma’am.”

Carrying a long-barrelled SKS rifle, with its wooden stock cut off, he entered the Springston Hotel on April 6 at 10.30pm.

“Get the money out of the tills and place it in the bag,” he said.

He told drinkers to “Get on the ground, no one will get hurt”.

During the robbery, he threatened several patrons that he

would “blow their heads off”.

At gunpoint, Roake ordered the female duty manager to empty the safe.

When she replied that she couldn’t access the safe, he fired a bullet into the ceiling above the patrons.

While she was removing money from the gaming machines and TAB machine, Roake again demanded money from the safe.

The duty manager said the safe was empty. He again fired a shot which went through the roof.

Before leaving with $10,000, he told the duty manager to get on the ground and stay there and “you won’t get hurt”.

He told the patrons not to follow him or he would return and murder them.

It all came to a terror-stricken crescendo on April 19.

At about 10pm, he went to a farm at Newtons Rd, Rolleston.

A mother and daughter, and a baby, lived in the main house.

The daughter had previously met Roake, the police summary says.

and daughter lived in a barn at the property.

Heavily-disguised, with a black woollen hat with the eyes cut out, Roake entered the farm carrying a long-barrelled pump action shotgun and black sports bag containing a mallet.

As the woman who lived in the barn was putting items in her car parked near the front door, Roake appeared, pointing the gun at her.

He ordered her into the house.

While Roake was distracted, the woman managed to flee and phone police.

Roake blasted two shots into the locked front door of the main house, where the mother and daughter had been watching TV. Roake told them to get on the floor and demanded money and keys to a car.

One of the victims, believing she was going to be killed, refused to lie down and started to push Roake away and try and grab the gun.

During the struggle, she managed to pull his balaclava off. She recognised Roake straight away.

Meanwhile the other woman ran from the room and phoned police, as well as her son who lived nearby.

Roake pulled out the mallet and started striking the woman, aiming at her head.

He then shot the woman in the leg, forcing her to fall against a wall.

She pleaded with Roake that she did not want to die and tried to run away.

He then smashed the other woman with the mallet as the relative from the barn went inside the house, striking Roake with a lid from an ornamental vase.

Roake pointed the gun at her and said: “I’m going to shoot you”.

He shot her in the stomach, causing her to fall to the floor.

One of the victim’s sons showed up.

When Roake saw him, he pointed the gun at his head, but he was out of ammunition.

Roake got in his vehicle and drove to Ashburton where he held up the Turf Bar at Ashburton Hotel.

“This is a robbery, get inside, and lie on the ground,” he said.

He fired a shot into a wall and then two more into the cash till as he tried to open it.

He took $1645 in cash from the safe before fleeing to an address at Rakaia Huts.

Police tracked him down the following morning where he admitted the Ashburton robbery.

Yesterday at Christchurch District Court, through lawyer Helen Coutts on behalf of defence counsel Jonathan Eaton QC, Roake entered pleas to all charges.

He pleaded guilty to six charges of aggravated robbery, two charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and two charges of presenting a firearm.

Coutts said no continuation of name suppression was sought.

Judge Gary MacAskill remanded Roake in custody to be sentenced on August 23.

He asked for victim impact statements to be provided and referred the case to restorative justice.

The Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club’s annual ploughing match on Sunday was a success with excellent weather and skills on display.

Held next to Wakanui School, 25 people competed for the provincial finals which will be held this weekend in Rakaia.

Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club ploughing chairman Colin Boon said numbers were down due to a Clydesdale competition being held in Christchurch, but they were all expected to be on board for this weekend’s event.

“It was a great day with good ploughing, great weather and quite a few spectators,” he said.

Ads warn of drug tests at job interviews A grim-sounding ad for a dairy farm assistant job in Milford has raised eyebrows at the mention there would be a drug test at the job interview.

The ad, placed in the Timaru Herald, calls for an assistant at a farm near Temuka. A picture of the ad was shared on Twitter

by Duncan Garner. There is a similar ad underneath for a position in Rangitata which also mentions drug testing.

advertisement states.

“Police vetting, no pets allowed, 3 years’ experience.

Sometimes rodents get into the house, but only at night.”

The ad calls for applicants to send in a handwritten CV. There is no phone number to contact.

Federated Farmers dairy industry group vice-chairman Chris Lewis said it might be a better idea for employers to ask job applicants to do a drug test after offering them the job.

“What he probably should have written, I suspect, is ‘we

do drug testing, all new employees will be drug tested before they start work’.”

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment said it was legal to ask a person to do a drug test at a job interview, but the applicant must consent.

As for the rest of the advertisement, Lewis said it sounded as if the employer had had some “frustrations” in the past and was stating the job in black-and-white terms.

“We’ve always encouraged

farmers to be mindful when you advertise to make sure you make the job seem attractive,” he said.

Some commenters on Twitter said the ad made it sound as though the employer was trying to make the job sound as unappealing as possible so they could “tick a box” for Immigration NZ and then hire someone from another country.

Lewis said that “would have worked five years ago” but wouldn’t now.

Woman killed A woman has died in a workplace accident involving a forklift at a poultry farm in Rolleston.

Emergency services were notified around 11.30am yesterday.

Two inspectors from WorkSafe arrived at the poultry farm on Robinsons Road at 1.30pm.

A WorkSafe spokeswoman said the incident involved a forklift.

“WorkSafe been advised of a fatal incident involving a forklift and a pedestrian in Rolleston.

“No other information has been provided. WorkSafe inspectors have been sent to the scene and are making preliminary inquiries.”

Dad told ‘multiple stories’

BY SONIA KOHLBACHER The father of a Brisbane toddler, who died from untreated burns, gave police multiple stories about the cause of his daughter’s injuries, at one point implying her older sister played a role, court documents show.

Shane David Stokes, 30, and Nicole Betty Moore, 23, are charged with torturing and murdering two-year-old Maddilyn-Rose Stokes.

She died in hospital on May 25 after paramedics found her unconscious at her family’s Northgate townhouse, several days after she was burnt.

Court and police documents have shown Stokes made varying statements to police about how his daughter was hurt.

He initially said Maddilyn was standing in the bath with both hot and cold water taps running and the plug out when he left the room to go to the toilet on May 22.

Stokes stated she started screaming 30 seconds later but he didn’t return until three to five minutes after, finding her sitting under the hot water while her five-year-old sister

Rather than seek medical help, the couple researched burns online and treated their daughter with aloe vera gel and bandages.

Three days later they phoned emergency services after the toddler stopped breathing.

She was taken to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital where she died that night.

A hospital paediatrician, burns specialist and forensic pathologist found her injuries were not consistent with Stokes’ story.

“Further, the injuries are consistent with Maddilyn being held in a standing position under water in excess of 60 degrees celsius for a period in excess of 30 seconds,” court documents said, adding she would

have survived had her parents earlier sought medical help.

Moore also gave differing statements, initially telling police she’d heard Maddilyn scream and ran upstairs to find Stokes holding her out of the bath water.

She later said she’d gone upstairs to find Stokes in the children’s bedroom after he called her name.

Mobile phone records showed the pair had researched burns treatments on May 20, two days before the date Stokes told police his daughter was injured.

Stokes and Moore later admitted they’d lied about when the burns had occurred, fearing they’d get into trouble.

Stokes said he’d washed Maddilyn in the bath on May 20, a version that was consistent with her injuries but which he later retracted.

During a brief hearing in the Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday, Magistrate Jason Schubert authorised an order allowing officials to examine Moore for signs of burning or scalding that would either support or discount statements made to police.

Arrested over sexual relations with students A 25-year-old math teacher at a North Carolina public charter school has been arrested on suspicion of carrying on sexual relationships with three male students.

Erin McAuliffe was taken into custody on Saturday and charged with three counts of sexual activity with a student and one count of indecent liberties with a minor.

Police launched an investigation into McAuliffe in May after officials at Rocky Mount Preparatory called them to report allegations of misconduct against the teacher, according to the Daily Mail.

Detectives with the Rocky Mount Police Department conducted interviews with students and staff at the school, which has 1300 students from kindergarten to 12th grade, before

obtaining a warrant for McAuliffe’s arrest last week.

According to police, the math teacher’s alleged sexual encounters with the three students all took place off campus.

McAuliffe was ordered held in the Carteret County Jail on $20,000 bond pending her first court appearance scheduled for June 12, reported WITN. School administrators at Rocky Mount Prep said that the 25-year-old educator was fired on May 4, a day before the police were tipped off about her alleged dalliances with the minors.

Mummy flops; Fraser cheers The new Mummy reboot is getting pilloried by critics – and that’s delightful news for one group of movie fans. “Tom Cruise’s Mummy is a flop,” reads the top post on the Brendan Fraser-devoted subreddit.

(Yes, such a thing exists.) “Join me in boycotting this. Send a message to the studios! #BetterWithBrendan.” Fraser’s fans are revelling in schadenfreude because the new version has gotten a paltry 20 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The enthusiasts are hoping that’ll teach Universal not to mess with Fraser’s most well-known role, Rick O’Connell, in 1999’s The Mummy and its sequels. But it’s notable that people seem to care so much about Fraser, especially considering how little he’s done in the last decade.

Place the Tegel Fresh Chicken Drums in the marinade and refrigerate overnight.

Preheat the oven to 170°C. Line a roasting tray with tin foil, spray with oil and place the chicken on the tray. Roast for 35 minutes or until just cooked and golden.

Meanwhile, in a saucepan, bring the tomato juice and olive oil to the boil. Add the couscous.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the couscous stand for 2 minutes.

Place pan back on a medium

heat, add in the butter and stir through.

■ Transfer the couscous into a mixing bowl, toss in the almonds and season to taste.

■ Place a mound of couscous on a serving platter, place the drumsticks on top and drizzle over the unsweetened yoghurt, lemon zest and coriander. Serve with a fresh salad or seasonal green vegetables.

Famine challenge moves with the times Megan Gnad

T

aking part in the 40-Hour Famine has come a long way since the days when options were limited to existing solely on barley sugars and orange juice.

Nowadays the whole project has been revamped and is right on topic for an engaged young generation.

There’s plenty of options on offer with the focus aimed at raising money for World Vision’s lifesaving work with Syrian refugees.

The annual tradition took place over the weekend with about 90,000 Kiwis opting to give up talking, food, TV, social media, or sacrificing the comforts of a warm bed, to sleep in a box.

Kids across the country also took part in gym challenges, as well as co-ordinated efforts where they had to submit to 40 hours’ movement.

One ingenious idea at Wakatipu High School, saw young people work over the period, preparing 6000 meals, which were then frozen to be sent to City Missions in the big centres and a local charity.

The event even spurned its own social media trend, with the invention of the “selfless selfie” (I know, a contradiction) where photos could be uploaded standing side-by-side with a young Syrian refugee.

Locally, 185 students from Ashburton College had signed up to take part, with the most popular options being the ‘no furniture challenge’ and the ‘backpack challenge’ where they had to fit everything they need for 40 hours inside a regular-sized backpack.

It’s awesome to see such creative and innovative ideas being used to promote this cause.

The 40-Hour Famine is New Zealand’s biggest youth fundraising event.

Money raised will be used to create child-friendly spaces for refugee children in Jordan, which offer safe, supportive learning environments. They also provide counselling to help young Syrians heal from the trauma of a war that just entered its seventh year.

During last year’s 40-Hour Famine, Kiwis raised almost $2 million. Since it first started in 1975, more than $77 million has been secured thanks to the generosity and kind-hearted spirit of New Zealanders.

All it takes is a worthwhile cause, a little passion, and the ability to think well outside the box.

t is hard to believe it is three years since I first wrote a column for the Guardian, three years of sharing my thoughts on a wide range of topics relevant to the rural community you all live in.

One of my wishes was to always give my topics relevance to those who reside in town, providing the services to the agricultural community. At the end of the day in the rural districts we all rely on each other for our existence, so the close links between town and country are the very glue that makes a region successful.

This link could not be more important than right now as we all look to support the workers from the Fairton plant as they negotiate the change before them. In any instance of this nature the human resource will bear the brunt of the change and it is pleasing to see the company and community rallying around the workforce to achieve the best outcome for each individual.

It is a reality of the land use change that has occurred in this region that what had become a single chain plant was going to struggle as a viable long-term

It also reflects the position of the wider sheep industry as it struggles to maintain consistent returns for both meat and wool in a time of world trade disruption.

With Brexit, a Donald Trump regime and the ever-increasing Isis activity, the world’s political status is extremely challenged – and all these factors influence trade stability. Hopefully the UK election result will not reverse the improved confidence in that country, where there has been a rise in lamb prices.

We can also be thankful that our trade exposure risk owing to the unrest between Qatar and neighbours over Qatar’s possible Isis support is small, if any. All these examples highlight how a

small island nation at the bottom of the world can be vulnerable to actions of other countries well outside our control.

At the end of the day we must work with what we can control and for a country so dependent on export revenue that encompasses factors such as biosecurity, product quality and safety, environmentally sound practices, robust human and physical resource practices and overall unity that will ensure we survive in an ever-challenging world.

I must finish by thanking those who have contacted me to discuss issues and made the face-to-face effort to introduce themselves. In my role with Federated Farmers I always enjoy talking to those on the

ground, whether on the land or servicing those on the land, as the real, on-the-ground realities are often so different to those held – or perceived – by those in organisations influencing the actions which can impact on the regions.

I wish you all well, au revoir and happy times on the land.

Anyway, I was in Ashburton t’other day and, as a horticulturist in the Far North and former journo, I was interested in Ashburton council editorialising the Myrtle rust warning sign with a quote from, presumably, Winston Peters.

I thought this was worth noting. Is he alleging conspiracy? I realise this fungal disease is not really a concern in your parish (yet), but I’m really just wondering who composed the sign.

Aussie retailers expand to NZ While Channel, Tiffany & Co, Topshop, Zara and H&M grabbed big headlines when they opened new stores here, a new group of huge Australian retailing chains has arrived.

Chris Wilkinson of First Retail Group said most of the businesses had opened in the past few months, selling homeware and furniture, shoes and optical products.

However, one big business opened more than two years ago, and the arrival of such giants widened the offering for Kiwis, Wilkinson said.

One Australian retailer which has opened here is more than a century old, all are well-established across the Tasman and have long track records, Wilkinson said.

They came to capitalise on New Zealand’s strong retail sector “and in many cases, they’re exhausting domestic growth opportunities and compared to Australia, the retail market here has been relatively robust”.

A meat worker has had an unfair dismissal complaint dropped by the Employment Relations Authority, which ruled her dismissal was justified after she failed to follow hygiene procedures.

Marie McNabb started working at Silver Fern Farms in 2001 as a seasonal meat worker.

McNabb was employed at its Te Aroha branch – the company’s export plant – which is required to comply with strict Ministry of Primary Industries and overseas regulations.

Breaches of the regulations could result in the suspension of the company’s export licence, meaning it would not be able to process or sell meat.

McNabb’s job included preparing cuts of meat for packaging.

On June 24, 2016, operations improvement manager Ben Hook observed McNabb pick up a piece of meat from the floor and place it on the dropped meat table, before returning to her work station and continuing to handle other meat.

Hook informed Stephen Greenhill, Boning Room Supervisor, of

what he had observed and McNabb was stood down.

The company felt McNabb had failed to follow the written “dropped meat procedure” put in place to protect the hygiene of packed meat, which required employees to wash their hands after handling dropped meat.

Silver Fern Farms said McNabb’s failure to wash her hands before returning to the workstation amounted to serious misconduct and was a breach of hygiene

and safety standards.

Following a disciplinary meeting on June 27, the company decided McNabb had not followed procedure and her actions could have put the company’s export licence in jeopardy. McNabb was dismissed.

The ERA ruled Silver Fern Farms’ dismissal was justified and was “an action a fair and reasonable employer could make in all the circumstances of this case”.

Bad weather affects NZ wine harvest New Zealand’s grape harvest is 9 per cent down on last year’s, mostly due to bad weather, NZ Winegrowers said.

The 2017 Vintage Survey showed the harvest totalled 396,000 tonnes.

“Given strong demand in overseas markets, wineries had been looking forward to a larger harvest this year,” NZ Winegrowers chief executive Philip Gregan said.

“With the smaller vintage however, export volume growth is likely to be more muted in the

year ahead,” he said in a statement.

Generally summer weather was very positive but there were some challenges as the season progressed, Gregan said.

In terms of vintage quality, wineries were confident the vintage would deliver the fruit flavours that New Zealand wine is known for.

Reports from across the wine regions indicate that generally wineries are positive about the vintage quality.

“However, as always the ultimate test will be how the market reacts to the wines when they are released,” he said.

“At this stage we are confident the 2017 vintage wines will add to New Zealand’s reputation as a premium producer of cool climate wines.”

New Zealand wine is exported to more than 90 countries and wine exports are currently valued at $1.65 billion per annum.

Wine is New Zealand’s fifth biggest export good.

Employment advice from Slee Attracting and retaining good staff is a constant issue for dairy farmers.

The South Island Dairy Event (SIDE) will include an interactive session on recruiting and retaining staff presented by award-winning Mid Canterbury dairy farmer Mark Slee.

Mark and Devon Slee, from Melrose Dairy Ltd, have been dairy farming in Mid Canterbury for more than 25 years. They run 2700 cows over three dairy units on their Ealing property, and employing up to 15 staff at one time. Currently they employ two lower-order sharemilkers and six fulltime staff.

Slee is keen to get some discussion going during his presentation on June 27.

“You can’t run your farm without staff, so it is important to get it right. But to do this requires ongoing time and effort; it’s a continuous process that includes reflection on what to improve,” he says.

“I’ll be suggesting what I think is the biggest barrier to employing staff, which may surprise some farmers. I’ll also be talking about work culture – what is it and what makes the working environment for your farm.

“I’ll be asking what puts off prospective employees from working

“Experience has shown me every staffer is different, with their own needs and expectations, but we all need to have time away from the farm so we have found being flexible and accommodating is a must – something that works both ways.”

Sustainable farming a vital legacy, says Nathan Guy An environmentally sustainable farming operation is not just a source of pride within the community, it’s an asset to pass down to future generations, Nathan Guy, Minister of Primary Industries says.

Mr Guy said some of the recent attacks on farmers are deeply unfair.

“It frustrates me that some people believe farmers are destroying their land and the country,” he said. “It was incredibly disheartening to read a recent article that showed some school children were being bullied for coming from a dairy farming family.

It’s also disappointing to hear calls to put a cap on the number of dairy cows in the country. This is cynical politics for a number of reasons.

“First, it deliberately isolates one particular farming type as the sole cause of water quality issues in New Zealand. These issues have built up over decades from a variety of land uses, both rural and urban, and will take decades to fix.

“Second, it’s naïve to the yearly event of calving, where the population of cows almost doubles in a short space of time.

“Finally, it ignores the process by which the impact of farming on our environment is regulated.

That is, at a regional council level,

managed on a catchment-bycatchment basis. That is how we are going to achieve our goal of having 90 per cent of rivers swimmable by 2040.

“Around three quarters of our waterways across the country are in good shape, and achieving our goal of 90 per cent will be a longterm project that will cost the country around $2 billion – that’s taxpayers, ratepayers and farmers.

“We are going to achieve it in a practical, realistic and sustainable

way that doesn’t ruin our economy at the same time.

This is a long-term issue and we’re all in it together.

“A huge amount of work has already gone in with new rules, standards and monitoring which simply didn’t exist 10 years ago.

Around $450 million has been committed towards freshwater clean-up projects,” he said.

“In recent years there has been a huge reduction in pollution entering our lakes and rivers from dairy sheds, factories and town

effluent systems, and billions has been spent on upgrades.

“There is also a huge investment in science and good ideas from both government and industry looking for new technologies and ways to improve farming practices.”

and planted stream banks to create riparian buffers in a bid to learn more about their hard work.

Freshwater biologist Brian Smith says it is well known that some riparian restoration projects lead to faster ecological recovery while others can take much longer.

“New Zealanders are investing large amounts of time and money in restoring degraded streams. We want to be able to provide better guidance to people undertaking stream restoration and for this we need to know about as many riparian projects as possible.”

Farmers will be asked to record their projects at the Niwa stand in the main pavilion in a five-minute survey. The information will be included in a new National Riparian Restoration Database.

From there, Niwa will select some of the projects and train, equip and support volunteers to monitor their streams.

These citizen scientists will measure stream life, water quality and the physical habitat, as well as some characteristics of the planted riparian area. That data will be updated to Niwa’s website where it can be compared to other projects. Citizen scientists would need to commit two to three hours a month for 12 to 18 months.

Production systems on farms need to change

By Alice lock According to one veterinarian, farmer and ecologist, agriculture needs a paradigm shift towards optimising wellbeing.

Dr Alison Dewes, who spoke at the recent water symposium in Havelock North, said as health professionals there was a responsibility to safeguard people, animals and ecosystems for present and future generations.

“Economic models have driven farmers more to growth (output) but the think big and more hasn’t delivered the wellbeing that it purported to do.

“The model assumes continued output without environmental effects or resource degradation.”

The critical source areas in the catchments were the areas where there was the highest loss risk of phosphorus, sediments and pathogens. These were the points that needed to be targeted, but there was also the risk of diffuse loss that could occur through leaky soils such as gravels or peats.

The increased amount of nitrogen across the country and this increase in fresh water monitoring sites via intensification such as large-scale irrigation schemes has had a significant effect.

Dr Dewes said nitrate travels through the land and one female cow’s urine patch alone delivered 1000kg of nitrogen to the hectare.

This was too much for the soil, so the nitrogen, which was transferred to nitrate in the soil, ran through to the groundwater.

Veterinarian, farmer and ecologist Dr Alison Dewes spoke at the recent water symposium in Havelock North about the effects of intense farming on water quality.

“The nitrogen bomb” was also influenced by the feed given to stock, with 30 per cent more protein than what animals needed.

This meant there was a spill over into their urine and then the environment.

“If we have to start constraining nitrogen in our systems we have to ask is grass the best feed for our stock or should we diversify?”

Phosphorus runs across the

land like soil run-off, it gets attached to particles or things on farms that run off on storm events.

Meanwhile, pathogens go through and across the land.

Dr Dewes said irrigation and intensification on vulnerable soils, linked to drains, wetlands, rivers, lakes, and eventually coastal food collection environments, meant there was a fully linked system where the paddock pathogens

such as cow faeces could find a pathway to the swimming hole or plate.

She said a common zoonotic pathogen would be hosted by the animal and could be transferred from the animal via contact, food, faeces or vehicles such as water.

To have clean recreational and drinking water sources, bugs needed to be stopped at the source, sediment needed to be

kept out, nutrients that grew algae and sucked oxygen needed to be kept away and there needed to be clarity, not turbidity.

To do this Dr Dewes said there needed to be a clear vision for pasture and agriculture in New Zealand.

“We need to stop converting vulnerable soils or there will be a train of damage. We can get more from less and leading farmers have worked this out.

“Several farmers have dropped their stocking rate and are not making any less money.”

Dr Dewes said there could be a win-win for rivers and climate if people do a combination of things with a farm system shift.

“We could lower protein in the diet, lower intensity of the system, reduce winter cropping, reduce nitrogen fertiliser and move to more mixed systems with cereal.

“This would give a 30-40 per cent drop in the nitrogen spill over in to the environment and probably pathogens as well.”

Looking specifically at pathogens, Dr Dewes said people needed to stop doing “dumb stuff” in “dumb places” like feedlots on gravely, leaky soils.

“Contaminants get directly in contact with sub surface water and we need to get these animals back out of these concentrated points.”

Dr Dewes said nationally there needed to be freshwater limits, which were around ecosystem health and not nitrogen and pathogen enriched.

MARKET REPORT Dairy A drier week allowed soil conditions to recover with a return of the north-wester but more rain and cold temperatures are forecast for the coming days.

Animals are now settling into their winter breaks as managers strive to regain condition back on to the cows before calving.

At the early June auction, prices lifted for the sixth time in a row with cheese and butter driving this lift, although whole milk powder values did ease nearly 3 per cent.

Fonterra did announce a lift in WMP offer volumes at auction, so maybe the extra supply dampened demand for this product.

Analysts report that a reversal in the health status of dairy fats is helping and butter prices were at record levels both at auction and in Oceania price listings.

The $240 million Matura Valley Milk plant is making good construction progress as more processing competition comes to the Southland and Otago market.

But, also in the south, Harvard University is looking to exit its dairy investment, planning to sell the 5500-cow operation to an overseas private equity firm.

Lamb More lamb schedule lifts this week as market leaders are now paying $6.35/kg CWT for prime animals at slaughter.

Processors report strong demand for chilled winter product but the UK wholesale market has been swamped with late season product.

The recent lift in currency has affected farmgate returns and processors report 2530c/kg CWT has been lost due to the recent strengthening exchange rates.

Fairton – more than just ‘the wo

ften the activity of one business dominates smaller communities.

The closure of such an important venture as the Fairton works is traumatic. It’s also a reminder of the community spirit that has built up over time around this venture.

This week we look at some images from the museum archive that recall various aspects of Fairton life, as we offer our support to those in that community and beyond.

The name Fairton was itself an ingenious solution. There had been some early confusion about the place name, as for a while both

the railway siding and the works itself were called Fairfield. As it was sometimes mistaken for the Fairfield area near Dunedin, Fairton was adopted by the community and later by the works as well.

The Cyclopaedia of New Zealand (1903) states that the community had a school, opened in 1901.

Initially the school was housed in

rented premises but later sat on a 5 acre block donated by the late Mr Wilson of Dromore.

Naturally, the works features large in the Cyclopaedia publication. This proudly states that Fairton was considered to be one of the finest works in the Southern hemisphere. It could put through 500 sheep in a day.

The industries that took place at Fairton works included the manufacture of premier jus, tallow, manure and sausage casing. The fellmongery also processed hides and wool. Along with the abattoir, it must have been a very busy place.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of the First World War, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men.

The Ashburton Museum with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, has erected in front of the Museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. An original flag is on display in the Museum.

Nadal supreme on clay Claycourt master Rafael Nadal was too hot to handle as he crushed Swiss third seed Stan Wawrinka 6-2 6-3 6-1 to claim a record-extending 10th French Open title.

The fourth seed, who has lost only two matches at Roland Garros since his debut in 2005, is now just one short of Margaret Court’s all-time record of 11 titles at a single grand slam.

Nadal, who has now won 15 grand slam titles in total, was never troubled in a one-sided final.

The vanquished Wawrinka could do little but offer praise to Nadal for a complete performance, denying the Swiss his fourth grand slam title.

Highlanders up for once-in-a-lifetime encounter There is buzz and there is excitement and little fear as the Highlanders prepare to take on the British and Irish Lions tonight.

The Highlanders named their team for the match on Sunday and all three All Blacks will take the field.

First five-eighth Lima Sopoaga will definitely start, as he needs game time, despite an injury cloud over All Black Aaron Cruden, who picked up a knee injury in the Chiefs’ win over the Hurricanes last Friday night.

Highlanders coach Scott McLeod, who is taking the head coaching role this week from Tony Brown, who is in Japan, said the match was a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for many of the players.

“For this team and club, we are in a really intense competition where points are crucial where we are in the ladder. It is really unique for this whole region and the players. These guys are unlikely to play them again.

“For some players, it will be the biggest game in their lives.

“For some of the local boys, having the place filled to the brim, hopefully, will be really exciting.”

The Lions scored a 12-3 win over the Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday night, getting the tour back on track and showing they will be a force to reckon with to night.

McLeod said the side knew what was coming but it was more about them than the opposition.

“That taught us a hell of a lot.

“The Crusaders have been quite dominant in their attacking and the Lions completely shut them down in their phase and their set piece. And held them tryless.

“So they are a massive defensive threat ... we at the Highlanders are renowned for our attitude and the way we want to play the game. We want to express that again.

“We usually like to give it a bit of air here but in saying that I’m sure they will want to too.

“We have prepared in the way we want to play the game. That has always been our focus.”

McLeod said some players had been added to the side’s leadership ground this week, with other players away on national duty.

Revenge sweet for Hampstead

Mid Canterbury’s hockey teams finished the weekend with a mixed bag of results, picking up one win and two losses.

In the women’s first division, tears were inevitable, with Hampstead squaring up in the

local derby to Hampstead/Collegians.

After Hampstead/Collegians won the first meeting between the two sides 1-0, Hampstead were out for revenge. An emphatic victory eventuated, with Hampstead rolling over their opponents in a 5-0 thrashing.

The result sees Hampstead move within one point of secondplaced Cambridge, while Hampstead/Collegians hold their place in fifth.

Over in the men’s first division, Wakanui travelled south to Timaru to face table-topping Cambridge.

In what was always going to be a tough game for cellar-dwellers Wakanui, Cambridge cruised to a comfortable, 5-0 victory.

Wakanui are now firmly locked in a bottom of the table scrap with Tainui, who currently lead the Mid Canterbury side by one point.

W

ith light winds predicted in Bermuda tomorrow I can’t see Team New Zealand being beaten by Artemis.

Everything is set for a Team NZ v Oracle America’s Cup final.

If only I had similar confidence about that final though, because Oracle and skipper Jimmy Spithill are a completely different matter to facing Artemis. Team New Zealand are going to need a lot of luck with the weather to take the Auld Mug off the defenders.

When the wind is under 10 knots, the Team NZ foils have given them a massive advantage over everyone else in this regatta. Even Oracle will struggle against the Kiwis in light airs – no one can touch them in those conditions.

Otherwise, it’s advantage Oracle because Spithill is in a differ-

ent league as a match racer.

Team NZ helmsman Peter Burling comes from a fleet racing background as does the Artemis skipper Nathan Outteridge and Spithill will be licking his lips over the prospect of facing either.

Burling v Spithill (assuming it happens) is a clash of styles.

Spithill will be the aggressor, using his match racing ability to control.

Burling will want clean races, backing himself to pick the right wind shifts. He will attempt to use his boat speed in an effort to sail around Oracle rather than duelling next to them.

From what I am hearing from Bermuda, Oracle have spent the past two days working hard on their starts against their regatta partners Team Japan, skippered

by Kiwi Dean Barker.

There has been a lot of scrutiny over Team NZ’s starting woes and while they were beaten

Jimmy Spithill again yesterday, their tactics and processes have clearly improved.

It was execution which let them down.

Oracle will be tweaking their boat but it takes 10 weeks to build race-reliable foils so there was only so much they could ever do during this regatta to catch up to Team NZ’s light air superiority.

But when it comes to boat-onboat manoeuvres and tactics,

Oracle are scary good, including at the starts.

Burling carries the load for Team NZ. He is an outstanding tactician, but a novice match racer compared to Spithill.

Oracle, meanwhile, have a brilliant tactician themselves in Tom Slingsby who is a master at reading the breeze. The guy with the greatest match racing experience on the Team NZ boat is Josh Junior, and he’s grinding away in the peloton.

Team NZ will have slept a little easier with a 4-2 advantage over Artemis, but it could have been 3-3 so easily.

I’m a little mystified as to what happened at the last mark in the final race yesterday, where Team NZ came off the foils for no apparent reason allowing Artemis to make up a 350 metre deficit.

It actually looked as though Burling forgot where the finish line was.

Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Adam Carroll and Mitch Evans concluded their first FIA Formula E doubleheader weekend by finishing in P16 and P17 respectively on day two of the Berlin ePrix. A mixed second day, the newest team in the championship showed strong improvement in qualifying from yesterday’s race. Evans was in contention for a fifth consecutive points finish, however, a procedural issue during the car swap on lap 23 meant that the New Zealander re-joined the track in P17.

The two pink Mercedes were running nose-to-tail when Perez was told to let Ocon pass because he had a better chance to catch Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo, who finished third. Perez responded: “Let us race, man. Please.” Ocon radioed in: “If he wants to have a crack,” he said, “we can go at it in the car park in perhaps an hour.”

Group one targeted Allan Sharrock sees a Group One future for his progressive mare Ladies First.

“Long-term, the Auckland Cup will be the main aim and we’ll work back from there to see which races will be suitable for her,” the Taranaki trainer said.

“She’ll be more than capable of competing on a firm track if we happened to strike one at Ellerslie – she’s a very sound mare.

“Over the extreme distances like 2400 and 3200 the good ground wouldn’t worry her, it would over 1400 but not over those staying distances.”

Ladies First has come a long way in a short time and following her stroll to a last-start victory in the Listed Wanganui Cup she has been turned out on the farm of owners Humphrey and Joanne O’Leary.

“She’s got a rug on her back in a 25-acre paddock in the Whangaehu Valley,” said Sharrock, who was also a Cup winner in 2012 with Shez Sinsational.

“I’d envisage her having a couple of months off and there are plenty of options for her, but I would love to give her one run right-handed at Ellerslie. That will give her a look around there before the Cup. “We could have freshened her up and she would have gone very close to winning the Winter Cup without a lot of weight, but she’s way better than a winter handicapper.

“She’s a serious racehorse.

“She’s won six out of 10 starts and two at Listed level already.”

Ladies First’s maiden stakes success came in the Listed Rangitikei Gold Cup at Awapuni last month.

Sport India bowls Proteas India captain Virat Kohli praised his bowling attack as they demolished the South Africa batting line-up to seal a spot in the Champions Trophy semi-final. The reigning champions were far too good for their opponents at the Oval as they won by eight wickets after easily chasing down a modest target of 192.

South Africa started slowly with the bat but were seemingly building a sensible innings, with opener Quinton de Kock hitting 53. India never looked in trouble as Shikhar Dhawan (78) and Kohli (76 not out) enjoyed themselves with some big hitting.

First XV celebrates victory

Saturday afternoon marked a big step forward for the young Mid Canterbury Combined Schools 1st XV, as they picked up their first win of the season in the UC Championship.

Squaring up against perennial strugglers Roncalli College, Mid Canterbury ran out to a 35-20 victory.

A strong performance by number eight Elama Touli, who scored two tries, and the strong kicking boot of first-five Josh Ree saw Mid Canterbury home.

Mid Canterbury co-coach Gary McCann said he was pretty happy with the result.

“It was a pretty even type of game. Our boys have obviously done a bit of homework in different areas including defence,” he said.

“They really stood up to the mark and showed that. It was a good all-round performance.”

Playing at Ashburton College, a good crowd gathered to cheer on the local boys.

“It was something we wanted to do when we drafted our plan when we started, we wanted to bring it back to the school,” he said.

“These young fellas need their mates supporting them.

“I believe that is what has lifted these boys in certain areas.”

Despite being a combination of players from two schools, McCann said the squad had gelled extremely well, developing very good friendships and creating a squad with no negativity.

“There is a really great team culture.

“When they are doing their fundraising stuff they are laughing, they are jovial and, most importantly, they are having fun with their rugby,” he said.

Cracking their winless streak was important, but McCann said the boys had not experienced any extra pressure heading in to the match.

“The boys knew that they had it in them to win.

“We’ve had a couple of really close calls in previous matches and we make no excuses about where we are today,” he said.

“We are very proud of the boys.

“We’ve got a long way to go and are happy with how we are going.”

This weekend they face a far more challenging task, taking on UC Championship heavyweights, Christ’s College.

“It will be a big one playing Christ’s (College), we have to prepare well, the boys know what we are up against,” McCann said.

“It is all about headspace and getting them believing in each other.”

Scott finds his form Adam Scott has gained a crucial confidence boost ahead of this week’s US Open by surging up the leaderboard in the final round of the St Jude Classic in Memphis. The Australian shot a two-under-par 68 to finish the US PGA tournament at six under in an eight-way tie for 10th, firing four birdies yesterday to go with two bogeys. He was four shots behind American Daniel Berger, who successfully defended his title thanks to his second straight 66 in the final round.
