No progress in Mona Square puppy-dumping case

“We understand it is a pretty upsetting act for most people,” she said.

“We would just like to have a positive ending by making sure that the mother dog is okay.”

People can ring the Ashburton SPCA on 307-1019 or contact them by messaging their new Facebook page to pass on any information anonymously.

Dobson said the key message the SPCA wanted to spread was that there were options for animal owners who found themselves in similar situations.

“We can help with food and look after animals, even temporarily, and we can find homes for animals like this,” she said.

“Sometimes people can feel overwhelmed and don’t know what to do. If you are in that situation, just call us. We will keep it confidential and help. There are options.”

The SPCA are still urging anyone with any information into the dumping of eight puppies in Ashburton earlier this week to come forward as concerns continue to mount for the mother dog.

“Sadly nobody has come forward with any information and we are still very concerned about the mother dog,” Ashburton SPCA Centre manager Rebecca Dobson said.

“Unfortunately we can’t do more until we get more information.”

The eight bull mastiff cross puppies were found dumped in a rubbish bin next to a playground on Mona Square on Tuesday morning.

The puppies were thought to be only days old and weighed between 600g and 1.2kg.

Dobson said there was concern for the mother dog, who would be pining for her puppies and could develop a serious mastitis infection if unable to feed them.

“We definitely want to hear from anyone because we want to make sure that she is okay,” she said.

Supervision for fatal shake-down A 31-year-old man was sentenced to 18 months’ intensive supervision in the High Court at Christchurch yesterday for his role in a fatal drugs shake-down in Ashburton five years ago.

Kooly Mangaki Te Tomo was now a different man to the one who planned to steal methamphetamine from Ashburton man AJ Gairns on May 30, 2014, his lawyer James Rapley said.

Gairns’ dead body was recovered 36 hours later; he had drowned in a creek while hiding from Te Tomo and others.

Te Tomo was found guilty at trial in 2017 of manslaughter and assault with intent to rob but the convictions were quashed on appeal, after he had served 19 months of a four-and-a-half year jail term.

The manslaughter charge was

dismissed yesterday by Justice Rob Osborne and Te Tomo admitted the charge of assault with intent to rob.

Justice Osborne rescinded suppression orders that had been in place since the appeal.

He said Te Tomo was not criminally responsible but did have a responsibility for creating Gairns’ state of fear and concern about what was going to happen to him that night.

He said Te Tomo had planned to roll him for drugs and asked his former partner to deliver Gairns to a meeting spot near Mill Creek off West Street, where Te Tomo and others hid, waiting to ambush him.

“He (Gairns) became aware that people were nearby and went off and hid in a stream. It was a freezing cold night. You

searched for him in a determined way and located him.”

Justice Osborne said the summary of facts then spelt out how another member of the group demanded the meth, searched Gairns and made him lie on the ground. A machete was held at Gairns’ throat and he was punched and fell back towards the stream.

Gairns offered Te Tomo a quantity of meth but he said he didn’t want the drugs, only for Gairns to stay away from his partner.

Justice Osborne said Te Tomo then threatened him with a “boot ride” and moved towards a vehicle as if he were going to take him somewhere.

“He was extremely afraid of what you planned to do. He went to get away and you chased him.

He hid in a levee area. You and others continued to search for him but did not find him. Then 36 hours later he had drowned.

He was trying to hide from your group.”

Justice Osborne said the assault had been premeditated and organised, the victim had been vulnerable and it had resulted in the most serious case of harm.

Gairns’ family was in the public gallery yesterday and the judge said he had carefully read the victim impact reports they had provided. He acknowledged the huge impact it had had on their lives and the fact court proceedings had taken a long time.

Justice Osborne said a big part of their grief was at the loss of Gairns, but also at the betrayal of a friendship between Te Tomo

and one of their own.

A cultural report highlighted three tragic childhood events as a backdrop to Te Tomo’s offending and said his father had died while he was in prison.

The intensive supervision will include counselling for drugs and alcohol and grief, and Te Tomo said he would see the programmes through.

Te Tomo’s defence team, Rapley and Ashburton barrister Paul Bradford, said the 31-year-old had moved to Wellington to live with his sister and had made positive changes, including getting a job.

Rapley said returning Te Tomo to prison was not the answer.

“Now he is living with his sister in Porirua and away from certain associates, he has changed and improved.”

It’s time to get back to basics

Age-old skills such as these will be on display at Ashburton’s annual natural living expo Back to Basics on Saturday, July 20.

Mid Cantabrians wanting to pass on their natural living tips will be stationed at more than 50 sites, imparting skills such as preserving, gardening, budgeting, how to make household products, and fermenting kombucha, as well as wholefood ideas, healthy baby tips and more.

Among them will be Jenny Cook and Mari Swindley. They will be among about 12 members of the Mid Canterbury Time Bank who will be participating.

Cook will be at her sewing machine, making produce bags from net curtains, and will be happy to pass on her skills to anyone wanting to listen.

Swindley is a dab hand when it comes to making stocks and broth, and she will be passing on her skills in this area.

It was the sixth annual Back to Basics expo, and was even more relevant today than it was when it first began.

“With the cost of living on the rise, we would like to inspire people with some ideas on living better and reducing costs,” Crosson said.

It was a gold coin donation for entry to the expo, which will be held at the New Life Church premises on Melcombe Street, Tinwald.

More than 10 people were treated by emergency services following two incidents within four hours of each other across Mid Canterbury on Thursday night.

At around 4.50pm St John were called to a report of a car versus pedestrian incident in the Ashburton CDB. The incident occurred near the intersection of Havelock Street and East Street.

A St John spokesman said the pedestrian sustained moderate injuries from the incident.

Later that evening, at around 7.17pm emergency services were called to a traffic incident in the Rangitata area involving 10 people.

Emergency services, including three St John ambulances, firefighters from Geraldine and Police attended the the accident at the intersection of Geraldine-Arundel Road and Main North Road, along with a rescue helicopter.

One person with serious injuries was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter, three moderate injury patients were taken to Timaru Hospital by road and six patients with minor injuries or non-injuries were taken to a nearby medical centre for further assessment.

District council keeps cap on travel costs

While some of New Zealand’s local authorities have travel expenses for elected members that run into hundreds of thousands, Ashburton’s ratepayer funded travel bill is far more modest.

Figures released by the New Zealand Taxpayers Union (a ratepayer watchdog organisation) puts Ashburton well down the spending list, giving it a fiscally

responsible 43rd ranking out of 77 local authorities.

The figures relate to the 2017/2018 financial year and show councillors spent $43,127 on domestic travel and $2461 on international flights, for a total of $45,588.

During that year elected members made 278 single flights.

Overseas destinations were Perth for an Australasian chief executive conference; Adelaide for a

welcoming communities conference and Sydney for an IT, Technology One showcase.

All travel was flown economy class.

In addition to the $2461 the council spent on international flights it also incurred accommodation, conference, transport and transfer costs totalling $2531 – $1201 accommodation, $764 conference costs and $566 transport and transfers.

All Adelaide expenses were reimbursed by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Enterprise (MBIE).

Compared to neighbouring councils Ashburton’s travel costs were low with Selwyn logging $61,329 (excluding international travel as costs were not provided), Timaru, $58,660 and Waimakariri, $54,300.

House prices The median price of houses sold in the Ashburton District in June was $367,000 up 8 per cent on May and 13.8 per cent on June last year.

During the month 37 properties changed hands. The district had the greatest house price increase of all areas in Canterbury. The Canterbury average for days taken to sell a home was 47, well up on the June average of 36 days. The level of inventory available for sale is currently 17 weeks.

College zone comes into play at 1350 students

Where Mid Canterbury students attend secondary school in the future will be determined by clearly defined zones.

Mount Hutt College already has a zone in place and Ashburton College is now in the process of establishing its own zone that will come into play when the school roll hits 1350.

Currently there are a number of students who are travelling to schools that are outside what are likely to be the new zone boundaries and that can continue until the roll cap at either school is reached, Ashburton College principal Ross Preece said.

In drawing proposed zone boundaries, he said the college had worked as near as possible to natural district boundaries – the Rakaia and Rangitata rivers with the existing Mount Hutt College zone boundary used in the west.

The college had also requested the Ministry of Education take the zone as close as possible to the school’s transport entitlement zone, Preece said.

In the draft there were minor changes in two areas along the Rangitata River, with a sliver of land towards the coast now becoming part of the college zone and another around Carew-Peel Forest School that would be

within the Geraldine High zone.

The zone will also include an area in Rakaia that is part of the Ellesmere College zone.

The college’s roll is at 1200, with students from across the district attending.

This could continue until the 1350 cap was reached and that was likely to be around 2022, Preece said.

“That’s where the rubber will meet the road as we can currently take all students, but there’s no great sense of panic. Over the next few years we can still take anyone who wants to attend the college.”

Establishing a zone made sense, he said, and a roll cap

made it easier to plan longer term.

A bubble in Year 8 student numbers would boost the roll next year, but Year 7 had smaller numbers and that again would impact on the college roll.

Those factors, combined with the mobility of families for work reasons, made it difficult to know exactly when zone rules would be enacted, he said.

The zone, however, will be in place by the end of this year.

All contributing schools will be contacted as part of the consultation process and information is available on the college website and hard copy maps are available at the college office.

Mid Canterbury dairy farmers are being encouraged to give feedback on the Government’s proposed Zero Carbon Bill, by making submissions to Parliament’s select committee.

Mere Keeling, caring for others

By Janet Benfell Mere Keeling (nee Shepherd) July 24, 1936 to April 25, 2019 Hundreds of newborn babies and their mothers were cared for

by Mere Keeling (nee Shepherd) during her 27 years nursing in the Ashburton Maternity Ward.

Coming from the Far North of Ngapuhi descent, Mere attended Otangaroa Native School, Kaeo High School and Queen Victoria School in Auckland before beginning her nursing career in obstetrics at Hamilton Hospital in 1954, graduating in 1956.

She spent time at Taupo Maternity, Oamaru Maternity and St George’s Christchurch before coming to Ashburton to begin her state nursing training.

The Saturday night dance at the Radiant Hall was the meeting place for the young people of the town during and before the 50s and it was there Mere met Yorkshire lad, Roy Keeling. They married in 1960 and have two children, Peter and Kathryn, and five mokopuna (grandchildren).

Mere continued nursing, doing night shifts, as well as being an early member of the Hakatere Maori Women’s Welfare League, serving as president, secretary

OBITUARY and treasurer during her 30 years’ membership and involvement with the establishment of Hakatere Marae. She was also a life member of the Rapaki branch on Banks Peninsula.

During the 1980s and until she retired in 1993, Mere was Maori adviser to such groups as Neonatal Gynaecology Services, Youth Learning Centre, Social Welfare Children’s Board, tutored Access Courses, and was on the Canterbury Area Health Board cervical screening programme for Maori. Between 1991 and 1993 she served on the Maori health workers’ committee.

In retirement her knowledge and ability in craft work, especially flax weaving, was well sought after. She was also a member of Te Moana Nui-A-Kiwa Weaving Association.

A doll dressed in Maori costume was commissioned by a Swedish museum and Mere also made korowai (feathered cloaks).

A tribute to her weaving ability was the flax mat woven by Hakatere women during the time that Mere lay in state at Hakatere Marae. Just as the final rites

were carried out the weaving was wrapped around the foot of the casket decorated with flowers made of flax.

The service, led by Rev Heather Stewart at Hakatere Marae, was a combination of hymns and prayers in English and Maori. St Stephen’s Anglican Church members and friends filled the wharenui as well as Rapaki Maori Welfare Women’s League members and many of Mere’s marae friends.

Mere’s long service of caring for others was evident one day at Rosebank where she spent the last months of her life.

An elderly woman was slumped in her chair in the lounge, her head nearly touching her knees.

Mere was the one who went to her aid, speaking quietly, putting her arm around her and helping her to a comfortable sitting position.

That was my last memory of Mere and her action epitomised all she stood for – caring for others.

■■FARMING FAMILIES’ DAY AT THE RACES

orry for Mid Canty Good crowd expected for races Farming families from around the greater Canterbury region are expected to flock to the Ashburton Raceway in their droves tomorrow for the second instalment of the Farming Families’ Day at the Races.

Held at Sunday’s Ashburton Trotting Club meeting, the day is designed to encourage the farming community to leave the farm gate behind for a day and get out and enjoy a social occasion with like-minded people while enjoying a massive day of hospitality.

Set up by a group of enthusiastic farming identities and businesses, along with huge support from the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust, last year’s inaugural running of the event saw more than 350 people come through the doors and it is hoped that the 2019 event will draw the same, if not more.

Under the control of local farming identity, Craig Wiggins, who will act as the day’s master of ceremonies, there literally will be something for everyone.

With free admission on to the course, a free race book, entertainment – including spot prizes, interviews with harness racing drivers throughout the day and a

whole heap more – those behind the event are hoping that no-one leaves disappointed.

The kids will be well catered for with sulky rides, bouncy castles, face painting and a colouring competition, while plenty of food will be made available throughout the course of the day.

Weather permitting, an appearance from skydivers will also provide a highlight.

One of the big focuses for this year’s event will be the Rural Fashion in the Field competition, with sections for males and femaleS, as well as juniors.

The call is going out for those unsure of what to wear to think rural, with flash hats, best pearls and lippy, while the men showcase their absolute best, including what they would wear in the most distinguished of places.

The day officially kicks into gear at 11.30am and anyone interested in attending the day is encouraged to head along to the Farming Families’ Day at the Races Facebook page and register their interest.

Tomorrow’s trotting club meeting sees an eight-race card with the full fields for the meeting on Page 21.

A big crowd is expected to head along to the Farming Families’ Day at the Races at Ashburton tomorrow.

t 18 months old, Becky Dirks’ son David had to be rushed to hospital. He had a temperature, was not breathing properly and, in his mum’s words, was grey and floppy.

It was the latest event in what had been a series of illnesses, which had first manifested themselves as a newborn who did not sleep or feed well.

Becky and husband Sean are Australians and they lived in Tweed Heads, New South Wales, near the Queensland border, at the time.

At Brisbane Children’s Hospital, David was diagnosed with pneumonia, and the doctor on duty with a stethoscope to her son’s heart, asked “What is the murmur we can hear?”

Becky answered that David had been diagnosed with a febrile murmur, that is a heart murmur that occurs when he has a fever, at the age of nine months.

“They took our word for it,” she said.

No further tests were done and after seven days in hospital, David was sent home.

However, he was back again just a few days later, and when Becky once again was asked, this time by the locum paediatrician on duty, that same question about the murmur, she blew up. “‘I don’t know’, I said, and I swore … I had had no sleep and was pregnant.”

Airing her frustration must have worked, because this time doctors looked into it further and they found that David had a severe cardiac condition. They diagnosed him with Shone’s complex, a rare congenital heart disease consisting of multiple left-heart obstructive defects.

It was the beginning of what was to be a terrifying journey, involving four open heart surgeries, insertion of a pacemaker and transplanted heart valves, going into heart failure twice, and the realisation that getting to adulthood will rely on transplanting a new heart.

At the age of just two, David had his first open heart surgery, spending 30 days in intensive care, including 16 days in an induced coma. His next open heart surgery was at the age of fourand-a-half, involving a nine-week stay in hospital, which involved two more open-heart surgeries because everything had not gone as planned with the first.

When David was five and his younger brother Hunter was three, the family moved to Methven.

They had been advised by heart surgeons in Australia that the health system here would look after them equally as well and after Becky’s experience across the Tasman she certainly thought it could be no worse.

Dealing with the reality of your child having a serious cardiac condition is a gruelling experience, but it is one made even worse by a surgery list in crisis. Heart mum Becky Dirks of Methven talks to Susan Sandys about her experience with son David.

It’s months and months you are watching your kid get sicker and sicker, and you can’t do anything about it and it’s not an emergency so what do you do as a parent?

surgeons in New Zealand has since decreased and Becky has joined a chorus of heart mums and dads across the country calling for more surgeons, beds and paediatric cardiac resources.

Two mums – Melanie Walsh of Auckland and Michelle Burns of Palmerston North – have written to the Minister of Health David Clark about “chronic and ongoing underfunding of our national cardiac service”.

The issue had reached crisis point, they said, and the main

problems included understaffing of paediatric cardiac surgeons.

This is to drop from the three it had been previously, to just one

by August.

There was also a lack of Paediatric Intensive Care Unit beds, delays to surgery, long waiting lists and multiple cancellations of open heart surgery, limited capacity in 23B Starship Cardiac Ward with patients put into treatment rooms and the television room, challenging work conditions for staff with high staff turnover

affecting continuity of care, and over six months’ delay for clinic reviews by cardiology, particularly in the regions.

Auckland District Health Board told Radio New Zealand that since 2016 the number of beds had increased from 17 to 22, and it was looking at further expanding bed capacity.

It acknowledged there was about 55 to 65 children on the cardiac surgery waiting list, up from 40 to 50 in previous years, due to “intensive care unit and surgical

capacity”.

Surgeries did need to be rescheduled at times, which meant some patients may not receive surgery as promptly as they liked.

One of two cardiac paediatric surgeons was indeed leaving next month, with just one permanent surgeon to remain, however, excellent specialist locums were assisting on a temporary basis until December when a new surgeon would start.

with the greatest clinical need are prioritised,” the board said in a statement.

David is checked by a cardiologist at the Starship Children’s Hospital, where the cardiac surgeons are based, on a regular basis, but not as regular as he should be.

Becky said due to the staff shortages highlighted by Walsh and Burns, rather than being seen every six months, it is more like every 10 months.

At Starship he should also be having regular “cath lab” tests and

scans. However, instead of these being held every 12 months, it often ends up being about every 18 months as they get rescheduled at the last minute.

“That gets bumped back too, because there’s not enough room in the cardiac ward,” Becky said.

“It’s horribly frustrating. It’s months and months you are watching your kid get sicker and sicker, and you can’t do anything about it and it’s not an emergency so what do you do as a parent?”

The clinics and visits to Starship are crucial, they are what will confirm David as being in line for a transplant, something he has been told he will need before

puberty, but has so far not been deemed unwell enough for.

In the meantime, Becky and Sean will wait. After all, that is what they are used to doing. And they will treasure every moment they have with 11-year-old David, who is today enjoying life and even getting into sports.

He is not allowed to do high impact activities, but this year completed a season of hockey and enjoyed every moment of it.

“He had wanted to play something, we just got to the stage we would take all the precautions we probably could, but we are not going to bubble wrap him either,” Becky said.

Circle of strife?

French investigators say the pilot of the Malaysian Airline’s ill-fated flight MH370 was in control “until the end”.

Is Disney’s technologically ambitious Lion King remake a triumphant roar or a case of Hakuna mataNAH? Going off the first wave of international reviews the answer appears to lie somewhere in the middle.

Most critics have recognised the technical accomplishment of the movie’s photorealistic animation style, but are saying that the single minded dedication to making the animals look and behave as realistically as possible has robbed them of the character and joy inherent in 1994’s 2D animated classic. If things don’t pick up it will be the second high profile, remake blowout in a row for Disney.

Pilot ‘in control till end’ NZME The pilot of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 was in control of the plane “until the end”, French investigators reportedly suspect, after gaining access to “crucial” flight data.

The readouts “lend weight” to suspicions that he crashed into the sea in a murder-suicide, they were cited as saying.

The revelations based on Boeing data came days after a new account suggesting the pilot may have been clinically depressed, leading him to starve the passengers of oxygen and then crash the Boeing 777 into the sea.

MH370 was on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on

March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board, when it vanished and became one of the world’s greatest aviation mysteries.

In July last year investigators released a 495-page report, saying the plane’s controls were probably deliberately manipulated to take it off course but they were not able to determine who was responsible.

The only country still conducting a judicial inquiry into the crash is France, where two investigating magistrates are looking into the deaths of three French passengers, the wife and two children of Ghyslain Wattrelos – an engineer who met the judges on Wednesday.

According to Le Parisien, they informed him that Boeing had finally granted them access late May to vital flight data at the plane maker’s headquarters in Seattle.

This included numerous documents and satellite data from Britain-based company Immarsat.

They were obliged to sign a confidentiality contract, meaning the documents cannot be cited in court. The investigators also visited Immarsat headquarters in the UK. It will take “a year” to sift through all the data and “nothing permits us to say the pilot was involved,” according to the plaintiffs’ lawyer, Marie

Dosé. However, French investigators cited by Le Parisien said the data “lends weight’ to the idea that “someone was behind the control stick when the plane broke up in the Indian Ocean”.

It cited a source close to the inquiry as saying someone was flying the plane “until the end”.

“Certain abnormal turns made by the 777 can only have been carried out manually.

Someone was in control,” the source was cited as saying.

Asked whether the data pointed to a deliberate crash, the source said: “It’s too early to assert it categorically but there is nothing to suggest anyone else entered the cockpit.”

First look at Sith design Star Wars fans have got their first look at the Sith Trooper design from the upcoming film The Rise of Skywalker.

Turbulence injures dozens on flight AP Intense turbulence struck an Air Canada flight to Australia yesterday and sent unbuckled passengers flying into the ceiling, forcing the plane to land in Hawaii.

The flight from Vancouver to Sydney encountered “un-forecasted and sudden turbulence,” about two hours past Hawaii when the plane diverted to Honolulu, Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah said in a statement.

“The plane just dropped,” passenger Stephanie Beam said. “When we hit turbulence, I woke up and looked over to make sure my kids were buckled. The next thing I knew there’s just literally bodies on

the ceiling of the plane.”

A woman behind her hit the ceiling so hard that she broke the casing of an oxygen mask, said Beam, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Of the 37 passengers and flight crew members injured, nine had serious injuries, emergency responders said.

Thirty people were taken to hospitals.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Chief Dean Nakano said the injured ranged in age from children to the elderly. Customs agents and emergency responders met passengers at the gate at the Honolulu airport to ensure they could get medical attention quickly.

Shayne Enright said injuries included cuts, bumps, bruises, neck pain and back pain. More than two dozen people were taken to hospitals, she said.

Llyn Williams was travelling with his wife Erica Daly back to their home in Sydney, Australia. His wife was injured and taken to the hospital.

He said when they hit the violent turbulence, “Everybody who was not seated and belted in hit the roof, almost everybody in our cabin.”

Williams described the cabin afterward as frightening, with plastic lying around and oxygen masks dangling. “A lot of blood everywhere,” he said.

“It was really quite scary.”

Sydney, was not injured.

There had been turbulence before the abrupt drop and he was awake, bracing himself.

“Then all of a sudden the plane dropped and went sideways,” Szucs said. “And that’s when the people who were strapped in flew, hit the ceiling.”

He said the pilot came on the radio and said they didn’t see the turbulence on radar and had “no warning this kind of air drop was going to happen”.

Babies and children were crying as crew members went through the cabin assessing injuries. About 15 minutes later, there was an announcement asking for passengers who are medical professionals to help, Beam said.

Family ‘must be repatriated’ A Berlin court has ruled that the government must repatriate the German wife of a suspected Islamic State (Isis) group fighter and her three children.

The court said the children would suffer if they remained in the al-Hol refugee camp in Syria.

The case came about because the woman’s family sued the foreign ministry after officials had refused to help her return to Germany.

It is the first such ruling in the country.

Until now Germany had been prepared to allow some of the children to travel to Germany without their mothers, fearing that the women might be radicalised and could pose a danger to German society.

In this case, the court explained that “inaction” meant the three children would be faced with “serious, unreasonable and unavoidable disadvantages”.

The children are eight, seven and two years old, reports the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. The mother is from the federal state of Lower Saxony.

The BBC’s Damian McGuinness in Berlin says this case is one of a number brought by the families of suspected Isis members against the German government.

Al-Hol camp in north-eastern Syria is home to thousands of Isis family members.

Dozens of German wives of suspected Isis fighters and at least 100 children remain in Syrian refugee camps, living in terrible conditions.

women. However, this changed in December 2017, when it was announced that men and women suspected of joining Isis abroad would not be treated differently.

Council claims attempted military coup foiled Sudan’s ruling military council said it foiled an attempted military coup, just days after the military and a pro-democracy coalition agreed on a joint sovereign council to rule the country during a transition period until elections are held.

Lt. Gen. Gamal Omar, a member of the military council, said in a statement that at least 16 active and retired military officers were arrested.

Security forces were pursuing the group’s leader and additional officers who took part in plotting the coup attempt, he said.

The council did not reveal the

name of the attempted leader, his rank or other details. The statement also said five of the arrested officers were retired.

The military and a pro-democracy coalition agreed last Friday on a joint sovereign council that will rule for a little over three years while elections are organised.

Finland hosts heavy metal knitting champs AP Armed with needles and a yarn of wool, teams of avid knitters danced to the deafening sounds of drums beating and guitars slashing at the first-ever Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship in eastern Finland.

With stage names such as Woolfumes, Bunny Bandit and 9” Needles, the participants shared a simple goal: to showcase their knitting skills while dancing to heavy metal music in the most outlandish way possible.

“It’s ridiculous but it’s so much fun,” said Heather McLaren, an engineering PhD student who travelled from Scotland for a shot at the world title. ‘’When I saw there was a combination of heavy metal and knitting, I thought ‘that’s my niche’.”

An eclectic group of around 200 people watched the performances, from families with young children and elderly to the less conspicuous heavy metal fans donning leather-jackets and swirling their long hair to

the fast-paced rhythm of the music. A niche musical genre in many countries, heavy metal is more mainstream in Finland, with several bands household names frequently played on the radio. Its popularity grew further in 2006 when the Finnish band

Lordi won the Eurovision Song Contest dressed as monsters.

While combining heavy metal music with knitting might not seem an obvious match, the organisers say it’s similar to other unusual events in Finland, such as world championships in air guitar, swamp soccer, and wife carrying — Finnish ways of goofing around and making the most of the long summer nights in these northern latitudes.

Thursday’s competition saw participants from nine countries, including the United States, Japan, and Russia, put on inspired performances full of theatrics, passion and drama and the jury struggled to agree upon a winner.

Finally, it was a Japanese performance by the five-person Giga Body Metal team that clinched the title with a show featuring crazy sumo wrestlers and a man dressed in a traditional Japanese kimono.

A different sport gripping the nation W

e might stand proud at the mere mention of the fact that New Zealand is a rich rugby nation and that it’s our national game, but right now cricket must be, at worst, running a very close second.

Maybe it’s got something to do with the fact that our beloved All Blacks are almost untouchable, we know they will win eight times out of ten because their statistics support that but when it comes to the Black Caps, there’s that certain mystique about them when it comes to consistency which leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat.

It should come as no surprise that cricket fever has hit our shores in the last couple of days

following our incredible semi-final victory over India the other night.

Those who had just 12 hours earlier spent most of the day bemoaning the Black Caps’ abilities and writing them off are now quickly scoffing down humble pie and hoping that the bandwagon slows down long enough for them to get back on.

Even during the last World Cup which was held both here in New Zealand and Australia it’s hard to remember such a polarising momentum swing in terms of pride and passion about the gentlemen’s game.

You know this must be big because even Sky TV has come to the party and given the footage to free-to-air television to ensure that coverage of the match will be beamed into every television set available across New Zealand.

And Sky TV don’t usually give away anything, unless you don’t already subscribe, of course.

What’s great to build up this match against England overnight on Sunday, is that we just don’t know what’s going to happen.

The players are there for New Zealand to give it a really good shake and send what will be a huge English crowd back home for commiseration scones and tea.

Will Martin Guptill stand up and hit some runs? Can Trent Boult and Matt Henry deliver the big moments again like they did against India? Who knows.

Just getting to the final has been a huge achievement in itself and it should be remembered that we were given little to no hope at various points during the tournament.

A win would be huge for the sport in this country and show that you don’t need the big bucks to get the results.

A story yesterday showed that Black Caps skipper, Kane Williamson takes home roughly $270,000 for his New Zealand Cricket contract.

That’s not a bad wicket (excuse the pun) to be on, but compare that to the $35 million Virat Kohli gets annually and it shows a deep divide between the two funding models.

But none of that matters now.

The Boomtown Rats once sang a song about not liking Mondays too much and by the time the sun rises in a couple of days, New Zealand sporting fans will know whether or not they agree, or whether Monday is now officially their favourite day of the week.

Diplomatic brouhaha in Washington; leaks galore Y

es, the deep-thinking US president has found his latest “insultee” upon whom to bring to bear his whole range of personally denigrating language and vent his spleen, gifts for which he is, rightly, infamous.

The cause of this latest outburst of character assassination?

The comments of the suitably august-sounding, Sir Nigel Kim Darroch, KCMG, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the United States of America, the highest posting available to a British diplomat. * Sir Kim has – accurately, one would be bound to feel – described the current White House set up as “inept” and “insecure”, among a number of other significant defects, such as “unpredictable” and “dysfunctional”.

We know those are, and have been, his feelings about the Trump administration since it took office over two years ago. That those are his “inner thoughts” is entirely justifiable and, one might think, inevitable but the ambassador has, in the process, fallen victim to that scourge of all diplomatic endeavours, the dreaded “leak”.

Somehow, Sir Kim’s electronically-conveyed thoughts on the White House shambles to the Foreign Office in London have found their way into the British newspaper, The Mail on Sunday.

Diplomats, of course, among their many sharply-honed qualities, are supposed to be souls of

That Sir Kim seems to have fallen short of those high ideals may see him, shortly on a slow boat back to Blighty to spend the rest of his days in seclusion and regret, bitter to the end his honest thoughts were somehow hacked by a scheming, up-tono-good interloper.

Meanwhile, Trump has “come out swinging”. Trump sat down at his well-oiled Twitter machine and began to dish out invective as only he can. Darroch, he claims, “is a stupid guy”, “We won’t have dealings with him” and more opinions in the same vein.

It wasn’t long before he had morphed into maligning Theresa May, the out-going British Prime Minister. “What a mess she has made of Brexit” and, she has had the temerity (my word, not Trump’s) “to ignore my advice”.

No doubt there will be more of the same over the next few days.

To her considerable credit, May has expressed her full confidence in Sir Kim. Thus, does the

President of the United States continue to endear himself to the world at large, presumably Americans in particular.

Ominously, with next year’s election in mind, Trump’s approval rating has begun to rise from the doldrums where it has lain, unmolested, ever since the dark day he first crossed the threshold of the White House.

Back here, things are less strained; Jacinda is as polite as ever to friends and foe alike and keeps well clear of enraged entanglements with Twitter and other social media, treating them only as opinion-conveyors rather than handy means of personal abuse.

We, too, have an election pending in 2020 but I should be fairly safe in saying we will manage to get to the polls without first experiencing months of bitter acrimony, as will, no doubt be the pattern in the USA. With “a loser” (Trump’s favourite goto word of abuse) in office, that is inevitable.

Meanwhile, in Auckland, Phil Goff and David Tamihere are spoiling for a fight to win the mayoralty later in the year; the incumbent has so far called the challenger “dumb”, the challenger thinks Ardern could lose her seat if, “she doesn’t let the city keep more of its money”. So perhaps there’s a Kiwi brouhaha brewing in our biggest city but without, one hope, the venom of the American variety.

Nice to know, too, we may benefit financially from keeping our cars clean which, among other things, will further enhance our well-earned reputation of being “tidy Kiwis”. It seems, as well, we may find ourselves tempted to go all-electric when purchasing our next car, as the creaky Coalition is talking of raising the price of old fashioned gas-guzzlers and fossil-fueled vehicles to the point where EVs will rule the world And all the while, Mr Hipkins remains in an arm-wrestle with teachers of various hues and persuasion.

So, never a dull moment in Aotearoa, New Zealand, as year 2019 gathers momentum for the rush towards Christmas! *We now hear Sir Kim has – metaphorically only – fallen on his sword and resigned from his post in Washington DC despite strong support from outgoing Prime Minister, May, Sir Kim feels such breaches of protocol occurring on his watch leave him no choice.

The hacker/intruder has thus had his way. A very high-powered inquiry will now attempt to identify the snake in the grass.

Mild quarter may trim earnings

Trustpower says lower than expected power prices and weaker generation may push its full-year earnings toward the bottom of its forecast range.

The firm, which operates a string of hydro generators around the country, says June-quarter generation was 28 per cent lower than in the same period a year earlier. Average generation prices of $110 a megawatt-hour, while up from a year ago, were also lower than ASX futures were indicating at the time the forecasts were made.

While the balance of the “volatile and uncertain” winter period is yet to occur, Trustpower says the first-quarter results are below forecast and indicate that the full-year result may be towards the bottom end of the previous guidance for $205 to $225 million of earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation and changes in financial instruments.

“This change is being driven by a significant reduction in generation volume and lower wholesale prices than forecasted, as well as mild autumn conditions driving lower customer electricity volumes in some regions.”

Trustpower shares fell 1.5 per cent

to $7.35, trimming their gain this year to about 20 per cent.

Mild temperatures are constraining national power demand, while dry conditions on the North Island are also limiting generation supplies.

Meridian Energy yesterday noted that June had been unusually dry across the country and that, even though its Waitaki hydro storage is above average, it has continued calling on its swaption with Genesis Energy this month to manage price risk.

National electricity demand in June was 1.9 per cent lower than last year, Meridian said.

Trustpower says its June-quarter generation in the North Island was 35 per cent lower than last year at 189 GWh. South Island generation was 21 per cent lower at 224 GWh. Total retail electricity sales were down 4.7 per cent at 934 GWh, led by a 6.8 per cent decline in sales to homes and small businesses. Gas sales were 12 per cent lower at 266 terajoules.

At the end of June, Trustpower supplied 403,000 utility accounts, up from 402,000 in March and 397,000 a year earlier. Increased telecommunications customers more than offset a 4000 decline in power accounts during the past year.

Australians live in a time of low interest rates, low wages growth and low inflation, and they keep thinking this is an aberration.

They talk about “normalisation”, expecting the lines on the graphs to soon turn and rise up again. It’s time to consider the alternative.

That this is normal – the new normal.

A lasting era of low interest rates, low wages growth and low inflation would change Australia. Low interest rates mean borrowing large sums of money will be much easier than in years past – that could push house prices up.

But with low wages growth and low inflation, paying back large sums might be a lot harder.

That matters a lot for a country with record levels of household debt.

Maybe Australians should have seen this coming. After all, big shifts in the level of interest rates and inflation are not unprecedented. Mortgage interest rates fell from about 16 per cent to 5 per cent over the past 30 years. Is a further fall to three-point-something really so unimaginable?

Inflation fell from over 17 per cent in the 1970s to a stable 2 to 3 per cent more recently. Perhaps seeing it fall to 1.3 per cent is not so surprising.

What sort of world would Australians live in if their situation continues? One answer can be found if you go north: Japan.

Japan’s economy has been stuck in a rut of low growth, low inflation, low wages growth and low interest rates for a long time. They call it “the lost decade” but the sad truth is it’s actually two decades now – they first cut rates to 0.5 per cent in

1995. Japan was once like a vision of the future, but now going to Japan feels like going back in time – lots of cathode-ray TVs, shops that only take cash and real estate that hasn’t had a renovation since salmon pink was in vogue. Its economic weakness is tangible. House prices fell for 15 years.

Japan’s economy has been growing though. And unemployment is fairly low. It is not in acute crisis like the global financial crisis. Just an ongoing insufficiency it hasn’t been able to solve with policy.

Which, if you think about it, sounds rather a lot like what’s happening in Australia.

Low interest rates have not been enough to solve Japan’s problems.

It’s worth thinking about why that is.

Interest rates exist because of something called the “time value of money”. Humans are naturally impatient. Would you rather have $100 now or $100 next year? That’s an easy question for most people: Now! Because we prefer money now, we require compensation if you’d like to borrow our money and we will pay to borrow money. That’s why banks exist.

Different people have a different time value of money.

Would you prefer $100 now or $102 next year? This is the question your savings account asks you.

When you save money in the bank and get 2 per cent interest, you get $102 next year instead of having $100 to spend now.

If you choose not to save, it’s because that extra $2 is not enough for you. In fact, you might want money now so much you’re willing to borrow.

Banks know they can lend some people $100 now and they will be

willing to pay back more next year – perhaps $104 (for example).

With the low level of interest rates, it is much cheaper for Australians to borrow. This is great news for the people whose time value of money means they want money now. And bad news for savers.

Which is precisely the point. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is trying to get people to borrow and spend. They want Australians to borrow from the future to spend up big and make the economy buzz with activity.

The problem is that Australians don’t always spend on the things RBA want them to spend on. They invest little in business and much in housing.

And if the low interest rates don’t make the economy spark to life – then they can be stuck in a cycle of low inflation and low interest rates.

While official interest rates in Australia might be sinking fast, a new analysis published in The Australian points out the actual interest rates on mortgages are reacting slightly differently.

But it’s not as simple as the banks being greedy. Banks are profitable, yes, but they are no longer making record profits. Part of the problem they face is they still need to get deposits in the door.

They have to pay at least some money to savers, and the official interest rate is very low. One per cent interest doesn’t sound tempting when inflation is above 1 per cent. So banks must these days pay interest rates higher than the cash rate to savers.

That said, those savings rates have been slashed too. A term deposit may still get you an interest rate above 1 per cent – but not much above.

Yoghurt sauce 1T lemon juice 1/2 C plain unsweetened yoghurt 1T chopped fresh soft herbs, such as mint or coriander ■■ Lamb: Season the lamb steaks on both sides with the coriander, turmeric and paprika.

■■ Heat 1T of oil in a frying pan over a high heat and cook steaks for a few minutes each side until medium rare.

■■ Rest for 7-10 minutes before slicing.

■■ Vegetables: While the steaks are resting, heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat.

■■ Brush the slices of eggplant with oil, season with salt and pepper and fry for a few minutes each side until golden brown. Set aside.

■■ In the same pan, heat a little oil

over medium high heat. Add the courgette, red onion, spinach and garlic and sauté until tender.

Set aside.

■■ Cook the couscous according to the directions on the packet, using the stock instead of water.

Cool slightly, and then combine in a large bowl with the roasted vegetables, tomatoes, almonds and feta.

■■ Mix the lemon juice, yoghurt, and fresh herbs together in a bowl and season.

■■ To serve: Place slices of eggplant on each plate. Top with the couscous salad and the sliced lamb. Drizzle with the yoghurt dressing and sprinkle with coriander.

Bree Middleton’s star just keeps on rising on the national swimming scene.

The Mount Hutt College 16-year-old has been selected to swim for New Zealand at the Australian State Teams Championships later this year.

Off the back of some amazing results back in April at the New Zealand National Age Group Swimming Championships, Middleton was chosen to attend a New Zealand selection camp in May. It was five days of intense training and nutritional guidance, with things like drugs in sports seminars with a bit of gymnastics thrown in, and there was a bit of a wait afterwards to find out who had been selected.

Middleton was.

Come October she will be winging her way to Australia where a busy few days in the pool await.

She has been selected to swim for New Zealand at the Australian State Teams Championships in Canberra, but the week before that the team will travel to the Gold Coast for a staging camp.

The benefits the team can get from an offshore staging camp are huge.

It will be an opportunity to train next to Olympic and world championship swimmers as well as senior New Zealand swimmers who are based in Queensland.

For Middleton, it is a huge opportunity and she is excited.

To be named as a New Zealand team member is testament to her achievement and dedication, and recognition of the work she has put in before and during the selection camp.

“This New Zealand team was one my coach Shane Jones and I had put down as one of my goals to achieve this year, so I am excited that I made the team, and I am looking forward to wearing the New Zealand fern with pride,” Middleton said.

Making her achievements even better was the fact that she started the year with a shoulder injury.

But she has worked throughout and was now back to full training now, and has recently returned from a swimming camp where she had been working on improving her underwater work.

Middleton said racing in a team environment in Australia, against the best state teams, will be an awesome experience and her main aim while away was to improve her times.

Just to top things off, Middleton also in the past couple of weeks found out she’d been named in the New Zealand Swimming national bronze squad for the 2019/20 season, which will see her attend camps in Auckland at the Sir Owen Glen High Performance Centre.

It all means a big few months for Middleton, but it does come at a cost – literally.

She is responsible for funding her own travel and accommodation costs, so as well as putting the hard yards in at the pool, she will also be working hard on raising funds to help her to achieve her goal of representing her country.

Celtic return to form

After three straight losses on the trot, Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier one competition’s defending champions Celtic A were pretty desperate to turn things around on Thursday night.

And they did just that, convincingly beating Methven A 37-16 thanks to a commanding second half performance during which they looked much more like the Celtic A of old than they had in their last few outings.

The first half was a tight tussle, but Celtic A well and truly put the foot down in the third quarter and didn’t look back, limiting Methven A to just six second-half goals on their way to their first win of the season’s third and final championship round.

Celtic A led 8-4 at the end of the first quarter, but Methven A came out vocal and strong in the second quarter to trail just 12-10 at the mid-way point.

From there, though, it was all one-way traffic.

Methven A welcomed back shooter Leanne Clemens for the clash, and after missing all of the competition’s second round – during which Methven A didn’t win a game – she had a few cobwebs to blow out.

But as the game wore on, few opportunities came her way as Celtic got a roll on both attack and defence.

Celtic A stand-in coach Gina Woodhouse was understandably happy with the performance her side produced, which she put down to a couple of things.

“It was a new mindset, and getting back to basics, and playing for the team, not just for the individual,” Woodhouse said.

Celtic A got back into a rhythm in the second half, letting the ball go through the court with ease, confidence and speed, and it just proved all too much for Methven A. On the next court, it was a similar story, with little separating Ashburton College A and Mt Somers in the first quarter of their game.

break all tied up at 6-all, before College A made a break in the second to lead 14-9 at half-time, and from there they just kept on building to finish with a 30-19 win.

In the night’s other premier one game, United A continued to shape up as one of the teams to beat, with a 34-27 win over Hampstead A, the team that last week really upset the applecart by handing Celtic that third loss on the trot.

pin planned huge changes each quarter to help combat Hampstead, and she said her girls settled really well each time.

Charlotte Samson, at wing defence, was the only player to stay in the same position for the entire game and she took some outstanding intercepts, while Liv McLennan shot at 100 per cent and Alice Hamill had a stellar second half at goal attack, with Stacey Grant feeding the shooters well.

both goal keep and goal shoot continued, while Nat Shaw and Libby Ross both demonstrated increased discipline, and Sophie Worsfold was getting better and becoming more formidable with every week, Tappin said.

Hampstead A’s hero who landed a buzzer-beater to down Celtic A last week, Georgia Burrows, again shot well as her side finished strong, but United A had built a big enough lead to hold on.

United A’s victory meant that

they and College A were top-ofthe-table two games into the championship round, while Hampstead A and Celtic A had one win each, and Mt Somers and Methven A were yet to pick up a win.

In premier two action on Thursday night, Southern A were too good for Celtic C, winning 3822, while Celtic B also picked up a big win, 45-21 over Hampstead B. In the night’s other game Methven B beat Ashburton College B 26-21.

A New Zealander may yet wear the yellow jersey

By Niall Anderson He came into the Tour de France downplaying his prospects of individual success, but there is a chance that Kiwi cyclist George Bennett could find himself wearing the yellow jersey.

Bennett currently sits fourth overall at the Tour de France, after riding solidly once more on stage six yesterday.

Bennett finished in 17th on the stage, just 18 seconds behind defending champion and overall favourite Geraint Thomas.

That keeps him two seconds ahead of Thomas overall, but most notably, Bennett finished 17 seconds ahead of team-mate – and supposed team leader – Steven Kruijswijk.

With his Jumbo-Visma squad having dominated the team time trial, it leaves Bennett as the bestplaced climber on the general classification.

The three riders ahead of Bennett – new leader Guilio Ciccone, Julian Alaphilippe and Teuns – are all inferior to Bennett on long climbs, and an opportunity may

present itself on stage 12 for Bennett to ride into the yellow jersey.

Stage seven overnight was set to be contested by the sprinters, while if Bennett rides well, he should be able to stay with the best riders on punchy but manageable terrain on stages eight and nine.

The next two stages won’t trouble the general classification contenders, leaving stage 12 as the potential moment where the yellow jersey could change hands.

A 209.5 kilometre route from Toulouse to Bagneres-de-Bigorre,

the stage features a 13.2 kilometre climb at an average gradient of 6.9 per cent, followed by a 9.9 kilometre climb at 7.7 per cent.

If the best climbers set a high pace on those climbs, it would surely be too difficult for Ciccone, Alaphilippe and Teuns, and possibly Bennett too.

But, with 32.5 kilometres of descending from the top of the final climb until the finish, if Bennett can stay close to the best riders on the ascent – a likely scenario – he could well catch them on the descent, and finish in the lead group,

without the company of his three rivals.

So, yeah, it’s fair to say it’s a long shot.

And, even if Bennett did get the jersey after stage 12, it would surely only be for one stage before he’d have to relinquish it in a 27.3 kilometre individual time trial on stage 13.

But, there remains a chance that New Zealand could have its first cyclist pull on the famous yellow jersey. And that’s not a sentence that could have been written many times before.

No more in this captivating World Cup has cricket’s fickle nature been captured better than New Zealand and England.

Two weeks ago, both were the most unlikely of finalists.

Late June was not a happy time for either New Zealand or England.

Yet here they are, preparing for the Lord’s finale tomorrow.

England started this World Cup ranked one in the world and rockstar favourites to bludgeon their way to a maiden ODI crown on home soil.

Their crash bash batting approach would prove unstoppable, or so we were repeatedly told.

But as pitches continued to cultivate curiously low-scoring grinds, England continued to falter.

Predictions for totals well beyond 400 never eventuated, and so it has been bowlers who have largely dominated.

In these conditions, the knives were soon out for England’s single-minded unwillingness to adapt.

Shock losses to Pakistan and Sri Lanka hinted at troubles coping with home pressure and expectations; England were then on the ropes after their third stumble, the 64-run defeat to Australia at Lord’s.

Another disastrous home World Cup for English sport loomed.

Eoin Morgan stayed calm, stressing fate remained in their hands despite the almighty hole.

Their last three matches sudden death, England have comfortably survived them all.

They first let loose against India at Edgbaston, then New Zealand in Durham to overturn a horror situation and move swiftly into the semi-finals and finally out of neutral.

Strangely, only in these circumstances did England rediscover their favoured, attacking brand of cricket.

Yesterday’s crushing eight-wicket semi-final defeat of Australia case in point; England’s

The return of their fearless opener Jason Roy has sparked the turnaround by taking on opposition attacks and instigating fast starts.

Roy’s approach relieved pressure on his temperamental opening partner Jonny Bairstow, allowing him to eventually flourish after he had blamed the public and media for England’s poor run.

Roy hit 66 against India in his

first match back; 60 in his second against the Black Caps and three successive sixes from Steve Smith’s gentle leg spin yesterday propelled him to 85 from 64 balls, before he was wrongly given out in pursuit of Australia’s well under par 223.

England cruised to victory.

With Roy in that sort of mood, early wickets are again non-negotiable.

How New Zealand would love one Roy-like contribution from out-of-form Martin Guptill this weekend.

If England took the rocky route to the final, New Zealand reached the knockouts with a flat tyre and no spare in sight.

The Black Caps were good enough to top the table after five wins in a row to start the World Cup tournament but their downward spiral began around the same time England started to climb.

Three straight losses into the semi-finals, the first to Pakistan, offered little encouragement that the Black Caps might be capable of sending India packing in Manchester.

They of course did just that.

New Zealand will now be more than content if perceived in anything resembling a similar light to their prospects against India.

Let England roll up to Lord’s in a limousine parade, while they again sneak in the backdoor.

Perfect.

As for Australia, no one will shed tears over their exit.

Smith and David Warner served bans for their roles in the ball tampering saga but this Australian team still carries that ignominy.

Five titles are more than enough for now, too.

A humbling semi-final loss will do them some good.

This World Cup final is fascinating for the fact it pits two contrasting teams – the aggressor against the intellect – and will crown a new champion.

One unlikely route will prevail over the other but not before we witness more drama in between.

Ticket prices skyrocket NZME England cricket fans will be forced to shell out thousands of pounds to see their heroes in action at the Cricket World Cup final at Lord’s on Sunday.

New Zealand sealed their place in the final by beating India at Old Trafford earlier this week and were joined by England yesterday after they beat Australia at Edgbaston.

The win is likely to spark a rush for tickets for the final among home supporters.

Fans desperate to see the final have already taken to resale sites such as StubHub and Viagogo to purchase tickets.

However, these fans will face a hefty

bill if they wish to get their hands on tickets.

The Telegraph reported tickets on sale advertised for more than £10,000 (NZ$18,804), more than 25 times their face value.

The cheapest tickets for the final were originally on sale with a face value of £95 (NZ$178) for the cheapest seats, rising to £395 (NZ$742) for those in the most expensive category.

India’s shock exit from the Cricket World Cup was expected to cause floods of tickets to hit the market.

Around 80 per cent of tickets sold for the group stage game against England were to India supporters, but despite their defeat demand has continued to outstrip supply for the showpiece final.

England’s appearance in a World Cup final has been 27 years in the making and you better believe the Poms are going to party like it’s 1992.

The hosts thumped Australia by eight wickets in a demolition job sure to make New Zealand fans nervous as they await Eoin Morgan’s team in the World Cup decider, being played at Lord’s on Sunday.

The English will be desperate to go one step further than they did in 1992 when they lost to Pakistan, knowing they have their best ever chance to hold the trophy aloft – a feat that would be even more special on home turf, especially considering they bombed out of the 2015 tournament in the group stage.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan didn’t even wait until the end of the match to start sledging Australia, taking to Twitter while opening batsmen Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow were smashing the ball everywhere to mock Aaron Finch’s troops for their unusual semi-final preparation.

“The Aussies should try bowling bare-foot,” Vaughan mocked, after Justin Langer had his players take their shoes and socks off while walking across the grass before getting together in a bonding circle at a training session.

Kevin Pietersen was on the same wavelength as his former skipper as he too mocked Langer, tweeting about the coach needing to tell his troops to take their “boots off” to improve their effort with the ball, before he deleted the post.

Whatever the result on Sunday, there will be a first-time World Cup winner and England players past and present are thrilled they will be able to cheer on their countrymen.

Ex-skipper Alastair Cook admitted he was consumed by stereotypical English cynicism, waiting for something to go wrong in the run chase, but was pleasantly surprised when it all ended with a smile.

“I can’t believe I have just watched that,” he said in commentary for the BBC. “You always think there will be a twist in the tail but there was no twist.

“England were so good.”

Vaughan added: “It’s remarkable and all the players deserve all the credit, the management, everyone involved in English cricket.

“It’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait.”

England seamer Chris Woakes, who took 3/20 from eight immaculate overs, added: “I’m pretty speechless.

“It was an incredible performance from the whole team.

“It started with the bowling performance and then the way they (the English batsmen) knocked that off was outstanding.”

Go hard, or go home

It’s a case of go hard or go home for two teams today as Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Watters Cup heads into its semi-final phase.

The Rakaia Domain will this afternoon host what’s likely to be a tense and highly entertaining semi-final showdown between Rakaia and Southern, and both teams know that they’ll have to bring their A game to stand a chance of being the team that will square off against Methven in the big dance a week from today.

Last year, at the same point in the season, it was the same two teams playing off in the semi-final showdown.

On that occasion it was Southern who came out on top in what was a classic game of two halves, where they just managed to edge ahead and take that spot in the final.

But, what happened last year, and even what had happened so far this season – including Rakaia’s come-from-behind win over Southern just three weeks ago – was water under the bridge.

Both teams know that anything was possible in finals rugby.

Southern coach Andrew Carr said that his team, all season, had been taking things one game at a time and not getting too far ahead of themselves, and that hadn’t changed.

So the Watters Cup final wasn’t even on their minds heading into today’s clash, as they had one more big job to tick off before they could even consider next week.

Carr said the first thing to do this week had been to work out where Southern went wrong against Rakaia a couple of weeks ago, so they could rectify it.

“Rakaia just came out and out-passioned us in the second half.

“We just need to have that passion for the full 80 minutes,” Carr said.

Carr said Southern fully respected Rakaia, and knew they’d be up against it.

“We just can’t afford to relax or be passive.

“If we do that, we will be out,” Carr said.

Carr said Rakaia had a few key players – the likes of Seta Koroitamana – who could be devastating and have a big impact on a game, so they’d need to shut them down.

Rakaia coach Terry Murray, though, knew that Southern also had danger men across the park, so they were focused more on shutting down the whole team rather than just a couple of key players.

“I just think that they are a good side and you have to play and be prepared to beat a good side rather than beating a good player, I think that’s the key,” Murray said.

Murray said little could be read into the last time the two sides met just a few short weeks ago, where Rakaia produced a huge fightback in the second half to beat Southern.

“They let us back into it.

“We were 29 points down at half-time and getting our arses kicked, and our guys had to do some soul searching at half time,” Murray said.

Southern had suffered a one-point loss in almost identical fashion the week before at the hands of Methven, just two weeks after making the combined competition final with Glenmark-Cheviot and drawing it.

So Southern, too, found themselves in a position where they needed to do some soul searching if they were to even make today’s semi-final.

They bounced back to romp home against Hampstead, and then sent the defending champion Celtic side packing last weekend to end their season, while booking themselves into that last spot in the semi.

Logan Bonnington has been a workhorse in the Southern forward pack this season, and will be one of the key experienced players in today’s Southern line-up.

PHOTO ERIN TASKER 060719-ET-0046 The downside to that game was the fact that they lost influential back Josh McAtamney to an ankle injury, which is likely to rule him out of today’s game.

Rakaia, however, should be fit and ready after having had last weekend off due to the bye.

Murray said the break should have given a couple of niggles time to heal, and also made his side hungry to get back out there and get the job done.

That week off also allowed Murray to watch Southern in action against Celtic, so he knew what to expect.

“They are a very good side. They can score out wide very easily and they can score from anywhere on the field.

“You just can’t give them opportunities,” Murray said.

“They will leave nothing behind. They will fire every shot they have got.”

But so will Rakaia.

Last year in their Watters Cup semi-final, Rakaia trailed Southern by a big margin but came roaring back to make it a real contest, which eventually Southern took out.

That game came just a week after the two sides met in the last round robin game of the competition, and Rakaia came out on top in that one.

It was a game that will be remembered as one of the most dramatic and heated encounters of the season, where each side had a player red carded.

When seasons are on the line, there is no lack of passion, and both sides will need to harness that and use that passion the right way today if they are to make it through to the Watters Cup final.

“Both teams will have to really bring their A games.

“If we don’t bring our A game in a game like this, it will all be over,” Murray said.

It was also semi-final time for the Mid Canterbury Rugby senior B competition

this weekend, and that grade too would feature what would no doubt be a big battle between Rakaia and Southern.

Rakaia were the team to beat in the first round of senior B this season, but had finished third on the table in round two, with their results setting them up for a semi-final showdown with a Southern side which finished round two in second.

The other semi-final will pit the team that topped the round two leaderboard, Methven, against Collegiate.

That game will be played at the Methven Domain today at 2.30pm, while the Rakaia versus Southern match will be played at 12.45pm at the Rakaia Domain, as the curtain-raiser to the senior semi-final at 2.30pm.

Seta Koroitamana is a Rakaia player with x-factor who could be a game changer against Southern today.

Morrison chasing more gold

Had it not been for a rule change

by Harness Racing New Zealand, there’s every chance John Morrison might have been sitting on the sidelines this weekend instead of driving at his hometown meeting.

The former Ashburton lad, who now resides in the Selwyn District, has the New Zealand Junior Drivers’ Championship locked and loaded for the season, it would appear.

With only a few weeks remaining his 15-win lead over nearest rival, Sheree Tomlinson has him pretty much past the post – and now another milestone sits within reach.

Morrison sits on 96 career wins and at his current rate the magic mark of 100 looks well achievable by the time the new season rolls around on August 1.

However, a few years ago, it would have been very different.

Rules back then meant that junior drivers who reached 100 wins in their career would become open drivers the following season. having proven that they are capable of footing it with some of the best.

It caused many drivers to pull up stumps for the season early to ensure that they gained another term in the junior ranks, which created plenty of opportunities, but for Morrison, it’s not an issue and he has a confirmed two more seasons in the ranks before

“There are probably three in there that I would consider to be my strongest drives of the day, but I wouldn’t be surprised if any of them featured with the right amount of luck.”

Morrison pointed particularly to the chances of Only In American, Arocknathepark and Zambia has his three best chances, but couldn’t split them.

So, the rising star can head to tomorrow’s Ashburton Trotting Club meeting, the final one for the season, and press on and continue to chase down the wins and get closer to that 100 win mark.

“I’ve got a really nice book of drives, I wouldn’t like to put one on top of the other,” he said.

“I like all three of them and they are for very good trainers who know what they are doing, so you can go into it with a bit of confidence.”

All counted Morrison has six drives on the eight-race programme including a live chance with local trainer, Ben Waldron with Franco Josiah in the Doug McCormick Memorial Trot.

Apprentice jockey Tina Comignaghi picked up a double at Phar Lap Raceway yesterday, securing her 100th career riding win. The South Island hoop recorded her 99th win aboard Miss Ricky Bobby in the More FM Sprint. Later in the card Comignaghi was able to kick home Rainman to win the Hardgrave Decorating Mile aboard Rainman for employers John and Karen Parsons, to bring up a century of wins in the saddle for the 29-yearold. Indentured to the Parsons, Comignaghi is in her fifth season of riding in New Zealand and is currently experiencing her best term with 40 wins.

Cameron was pleased with her gelding’s win over a mile at Ruakaka last month and is hoping

for a repeat performance today.

“It was a really nice one to pick up,” she said. “When he puts his best foot forward and has been in good form he’s as good as anything on the day.

“He’s been really good, Donavan (Mansour, jockey) has been riding him. He doesn’t get ridden a lot anyway, he spends a lot of time in the pool.

“The jockey is happy, so I’ll take his word for it because a lot

of jockeys aren’t happy after riding him.”

Cameron will also line-up Copper Mine in the Northland Business Systems (1400m).

The four-year-old son of All Too Hard has only been tested over 1200m on raceday, but Cameron is confident her charge will handle the step-up in distance.

“There should be plenty of speed on I hope and he should settle in nicely.”

A policy of sourcing thoroughbred talent from this side of the Tasman has produced rich rewards this season for Australian owner John Fiteni. The Queenslander hit headlines earlier this year with a superb Gr.2 Adelaide Cup victory by his lightly-raced stayer Surprise Baby, and his colours were to the fore again at Flemington last weekend as Miss Mandito took out the Leilani Series Final (1400m). Surprise Baby has provided a remarkable return on Fiteni’s investment, snapped up for just $5500. He has won four of his eight starts for more than $400,000 in stakes.

Louboutin a mudlark Hastings-trained Louboutin showed she has a penchant for extremely heavy track conditions when recording back-to-back wins at Wanganui last week. The Jimmy Choux 3-year-old cleared maiden ranks with a 14 length victory over 1600m on a heavy-11 track at Wanganui and was almost as dominant when stepping up to Rating 65 grade over 1350m there last week.

This season’s leading jockey Lisa Allpress has been aboard in both wins and adopted similar tactics each time, keeping her to the outside of the track in the straight as she forged clear.

Nelson eyes another chase win The Grant Plumbing Wellington Steeplechase (5500m) holds some great memories for Hastings trainer Paul Nelson and he hopes to add another victory in the race at Trentham today.

Nelson has been one of Hawke’s Bay’s top trainers for many years,

concentrating mainly on jumpers and has produced well in excess of 200 winners since he started training in the mid-1970s. His first major success came in the 1987 Wellington Steeplechase with Storm.

“It does bring back some wonderful memories. It has happened

a couple of times (winning the race) but it has been a long time since the first one in 1987,” he said.

“Most of those in the riding ranks wouldn’t have been born then. We have been very lucky.”

Nelson, who trains in partnership with Corrina McDougal, will line-

up Perry Mason and Zardetto in the feature jumps race.

Perry Mason will head into today off the back of winning the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase (4800m) at Hastings last month and Nelson said the nine-year-old son of Zed has come into his own as an older horse.

Feeling the pressure

M

uch like it did four years ago, the Cricket World Cup has served a powerful reminder of how big stage, knockout sporting contests can be twisted in the most unpredictable ways by an invisible force known as pressure.

It takes a damned fool to make a bold prediction about a World Cup contest because pressure shows up with the inevitability of a drunk uncle at a wedding to spark feelings and reactions that the main characters never knew were in them.

Pressure makes heroes and villains wherever it goes.

It crushes some and emboldens others but never quite in the way anyone imagined.

On any other day, India’s vaunted top order batsmen would have hit and giggled their way past New Zealand’s seemingly meagre total.

But it wasn’t any other day.

It was a World Cup semi-final, heavy with expectation and that fact alone compromised the decision-making of the best and most experienced players in the world.

A seemingly meagre total suddenly became a near impossible target much like it did at the 2007 Rugby World Cup when the All Blacks only needed three points to win the quarter-final and had 15 minutes to get them.

This is what pressure does – it makes the simple seem difficult.\ It turns the near-impossible into the possible and it can transform a side previously struggling into one that can’t do anything wrong.

The Black Caps limped into the semi-final, uncertain, erratic and mostly written off as a credible threat, much like France came into that 2007 quarter-final a largely dispirited group having done nothing to suggest there was much rugby in them.

World Cups, be they cricket, football, rugby or netball, are held hostage by pressure and yet strangely even the most ardent and committed followers of sport seem to be taken by surprise when it shows up and changes everything.

For those whose sporting love is rugby, the events in Manchester should be taken as an opportunity to definitively understand that once pressure has finished its work in England, it will head to Japan in September and cause

It makes no sense for teams to deny it exists even if they can’t see it or touch it and yet some will underplay its probable effects.

Disaster awaits those teams who decide to ignore it and hope it goes away and yet even to confront it head on, to try to be braced for its effects in the heat of the contest, provides little or no guarantee this imposter will be tamed.

But having learned the hard way, the All Blacks will take the head-on route later this year.

They see that as the only way, having tried in the past to pretend pressure isn’t real, only to find themselves buried under it then broken by it.

At the last tournament they made a significant breakthrough in realising that pressure is omnipresent in their world in a way it’s not for their opponents.

It was a eureka moment as it provided them with a psychological weapon of sorts.

They knew they weren’t immune to it, but the important thing is they came to see that every other team was potentially more vulnerable to it.

No other team lives with such relentless expectation as the All Blacks.

No other team is expected to win every game.

No other team has such a legacy to protect, so much riding on their ability to preserve and enhance it.

The All Blacks are never given any respite from pressure and hence the World Cup for them, to some extent, is an extension of normal life.

This meant the All Blacks headed to England in 2015 with a sense they were simply taking an old, curmudgeonly, high maintenance companion with them.

One whose strange and unpredictable ways they had become accustomed and one whom they accepted wasn’t invited but nevertheless, wasn’t going to leave.

The second part of this realisation was that most, if not all of the teams they encountered, would be feeling the jump in pressure.

Pressure, of the intensity which the World Cup brings, is not omnipresent in rugby’s other leading nations and hence the All Blacks knew their opponents would be liable to make mistakes they normally wouldn’t.

The certainty of that brought composure to the 2015 All Blacks as they knew that if they were patient, pressure would throw them a bone: that their opposition would succumb to it at some critical point.

And sure enough, South Africa couldn’t nail a critical lineout late in the semi-final and Australia scrapped for a ball they shouldn’t have in the final and yielded the points the All Blacks needed late in the game.

Pressure made its presence felt all tournament.

England, as hosts felt it more than anyone, and when they should have kicked a penalty to secure a draw with Wales they went for a lineout.

That one bad call effectively saw them dumped out of their own tournament in the pool round.

Wales forgot to defend their blindside in the last minutes of

their quarter-final against South Africa and Ireland descended into compound errors when they realised they hadn’t prepared to face a Pumas side that would be so good at moving the ball.

Every team that made the last eight in 2015 felt the impact of pressure at some stage.

Some, like Ireland and England, were hit so hard by it that they disintegrated and maybe the reason the All Blacks won that World Cup was because for them, the pressure gauge didn’t change the way it did for everyone else.

“At World Cups you have got everybody trying to win,” All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said from the depths of Rome’s Stadio Olimpico last year after his side had finished their season with many doubting their readiness to defend their title.

Although the All Blacks had beaten Italy with ease that day, the defeat to Ireland the previous week had seen many elevate the men in green to World Cup favourite status.

The loss in Dublin had hurt, but Hansen knew it meant nothing in the context of the World Cup as by then, pressure would be bearing down on the Irish and everyone else, with a venomous force.

“When we play, everyone is trying to beat us,” he said.

“And if they beat us, they could still lose every other game that season and have a great year because they have beaten the All Blacks.

“When you go to the World Cup you are going to get judged on whether you win it or not.

“And it is not just us.

“Any Tier One union that has any hopes of winning it will be judged ... so Ireland, Scotland, England, Australia, South Africa and Argentina are teams that will go there hoping to win and therefore their fans will also be hoping they win.

“That will bring pressure that doesn’t normally come because you have got to win every game.

“You might be lucky and lose one in the round robin and still make it, but you have still got to win every game in the knock-out rounds or you go home.

“So that brings a pressure not many teams are used to but for us we live with that every day.”

Pressure has one last assignment at Lord’s this weekend before it inevitably shows up in Japan and makes and breaks all sorts of sporting dreams.

In brief Big double-header The Ashburton Domain will be a hive of footballing activity come Saturday afternoon with both Mid Canterbury United teams playing at home. After suffering their first loss of the Division 1 season last week, the Mid Canterbury United A team welcome the Universities AFC Gators to the Domain. The Mid Canterbury United B team also come in to the weekend off the back of a loss, and will be play Nomads United AFC White in their Division 5 clash. Both games begin at 2.30pm.

Table-toppers to travel The table-topping Methven FC first team will look to carry on their winning run in Division 3 when they travel to Christchurch today. The side, coming off a 3-0 victory last weekend, are travelling to Ilam Fields to face off against the Universities AFC Berocca Forwards. The Methven FC Reserves will host the Selwyn United FC Div 6 side at the Methven Domain after an exciting 5-5 draw last week. Both games begin at 2.30pm.

Razor has the moves They’re New Zealand’s top hip hop group with two world championships to their name, and The Bradas say Scott Robertson has got what it takes. “His confidence is very impressive, his facials, his performance and energy. He needs a little work on his movement but he is clearly very passionate about what he’s doing,” says dancer Riley Bourne. But the group agrees, if he was to become All Black coach, he could do with a bit of extra tuition.

Blues, Highlanders chasing the other Barrett brother Beauden Barrett’s future is now confirmed – he’s off to the Blues – and now the attention will turn to the future of his brother Jordie, another Hurricanes player who is off contract and looking at other opportunities.

They are understood to be the Blues and the Highlanders, and both would welcome the services of a 22-year-old All Blacks outside back capable of playing in the midfield.

In a move which will horrify

Hurricanes’ fans and delight their own supporters in equal measure, the Blues would dearly love to have Beauden’s big little brother Jordie to join him in Auckland as they have lost Melani Nanai to English club Worcester and are in

the market for a fullback – especially one with the physical attributes of the 1.96m Jordie, who has played nine tests.

The Highlanders are also in the market as they seek to replace All Black Ben Smith.

The pair’s father, Kevin “Smiley” Barrett, said: “Jordie has a tough decision to make, too. That was why he moved to the Hurricanes, to play with Beauden, so he has a tough couple of weeks ahead of him.”

Keep calm, it’s only Wimbledon AP Hours before her Wimbledon semi-final, Serena Williams spent some time deep in thought and arrived at a couple of conclusions.

For one thing, she shouldn’t focus too much on trying to raise her Grand Slam title total to 24, a number achieved by just one other player in tennis history.

And for another, she needs to stay calm on the court.

With that in mind, Williams went out and made it all look so easy, overwhelming Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-2 in 59 minutes to once again put herself on the verge of an eighth championship at the All England Club and major No. 24 overall.

“It’s really not about 24 or 23 or 25.

“It’s really just about going out there and giving my best effort, no matter what.

“No matter what I do, I will always have a great career,” said Williams, who at 37 is the oldest woman to reach a Grand Slam final in the professional era.

“Like, I just kind of let it go this morning.”

Tonight, she will take on No. 7-seeded Simona Halep of Romania, a 6-1, 6-3 winner over No. 8 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine under a cloudy sky at Centre Court.

It’s the 11th final at the All England Club for Williams, the first for Halep, whose only major trophy came at the French Open last year.

They’ve played each other 10 previous times, with Williams winning nine, including a three-setter at the Australian Open in January.

“I respect a lot what she has done and

what she’s doing,” said Halep, who, like Williams, used to be ranked No. 1.

“But now I feel stronger, mentally, facing her. We will see what is going to happen. It’s just a big challenge for me.”

For anyone, really, when Williams is at her best.

And after an up-and-down first half of the year, due in part to injury and illness, she sure does appear to have lifted her level considerably.

Williams was limited to 12 matches in 2019 until last week. After a third-round loss at Roland Garros on June 1, she stayed in France for medical treatment and finally felt pain-free while preparing for Wimbledon.

“Well, if she will play like this in the final,” said Strycova, 33, the oldest firsttime Grand Slam semi-finalist in the modern era, “it’s going to be very hard for Simona.”

After a three-set struggle against Alison Riske in the quarter-finals, Williams was dominant against Strycova, who was limited by a leg muscle problem that cropped up in the very first game.

Strycova would repeatedly flex or shake her legs between points or try to stretch in her sideline chair by pulling her right foot onto her left knee and rocking her leg.

Not an ideal situation. Especially when facing Williams if she’s this dialed-in.

Williams played cleanly, accumulating nearly twice as many winners as unforced errors, 28-10.

She was at her usual court-covering best, which helped limit Strycova to 10 winners.

“I just need to relax and do what I can do,” Williams said, referring again to her deep thoughts from the morning.

“I was calm today,” she said, then rolled her eyes and added: “It’s a day-today basis with me. We all know that. I’m far from perfect.”

Williams has been this close to adding to her title total before: In 2018, her first season back on tour after the birth of her daughter, Olympia, Williams reached the finals at Wimbledon and the US Open but lost each time.

That has left her Grand Slam total at 23, a record for the professional era that she established when she won the 2017 Australian Open.

At the All England Club, she was beaten by Angelique Kerber.

At Flushing Meadows, she was outplayed by Naomi Osaka in a match that descended into chaos after Williams was docked a game for a heated argument with the chair umpire.

She said that she met with a therapist and wrote to Osaka to apologise for the whole episode.

A rare show of emotion from Williams on Thursday could have been the semi-final’s turning point.

Ahead 2-1 in the first set while Strycova served at 30-all, Williams sailed a backhand return way long and let out a cry of “Aaaaah!”

Maybe that got her going. Williams seized seven points in a row and 16 of 20 to close out that set.

Halep seemed headed for a long day when her semi-final against Svitolina began with a pair of games encompassing 32 points across 20 minutes.

Five of the first 11 points lasted at least 10 strokes; two went 23.

Soon enough, though, Halep was in control.

Now comes a tougher task: beating Williams.
