Trapped skiers happy to get off Mt Hutt

About 100 skiers in buses were stranded by black ice on the Mt Hutt access road on Tuesday night.

Mt Hutt management stopped about five buses from coming down the road after one of them slid into a bank.

They then launched a rescue operation, sending four-wheeldrive shuttle buses to the passengers and ferrying them into waiting buses further down the road.

Manager James McKenzie praised the skifield’s road crew for doing an amazing job after falling snow turned the road to black ice in a short space of time. They had been helped by Methven Travel.

It was at a lower level of the road, about four kilometres up from the information booth, and snow was only light at the time. He estimated the most anyone would have been in the stationary buses was about three hours, and the last ones would have arrived back in Methven around 9pm.

Mt Hutt staff had distributed chocolate bars to the stranded passengers, they were in a relatively flat area so could walk around outside, there was a toilet they could use at the information booth once they had been rescued, and they had mobile phone reception.

There had been about 1500 people skiing Mt Hutt that day.

Methven Travel operator Dave Dynes said he had been travelling the road since 1987, but this time was the worst he had seen it.

The storm had been predicted, but no-one foresaw the icy type

of snow, which “hit the road and froze”.

He praised Mt Hutt management for how it managed the situation, grading and gritting the road, closing it to uphill traffic and managing downhill traffic.

“Mt Hutt are very, very good at calling a road closure early and getting it sorted so that it’s safe to come down,” Dynes said.

Among those stranded were the Jansen family, who were in a bus with about 25 fellow passengers.

“It wasn’t that bad, it was warm and comfortable, they gave us Mars Bars and water,” said mum Jill Jansen.

She and husband Mark are from Sydney and on a ski holiday with their three children in Methven.

It was the end of another great day’s skiing when they boarded the 4pm bus to come down off the mountain. But the weather was coming in and it was a slow trip down, and then they hit backed up traffic and were stranded.

They were eventually rescued and, as soon as they got back in Methven late at night, they “raided” the town’s pizza shop.

The Jansens were philosophical about their ordeal, and hoped to get some more skiing in when Mt Hutt re-opened. The skifield was closed yesterday due to snow drifts after 25 centimetres overnight and continuing snowfall.

“It’s the typical family holiday for us, something always goes wrong,” Jill said.

This morning they went to retrieve their skis and snowboards from the bus, which had been able to come down the road shortly after they had.

Australian tourists Mark and Jill Jansen were relieved to finally get off the Mt Hutt access road on Tuesday night, and retrieve their ski equipment yesterday.

Snowy weather all but bypasses Ashburton township The Ashburton township may have missed out on snow, but the remainder of Mid Canterbury wasn’t spared by the wintry blast.

In line with weather predictions leading up to the polar blast that tore its way up the country, snow fell in high-elevated parts of the region on Tuesday evening and into the early hours of Wednesday morning before tak-

ing a break and returning, in stages during the day.

Those towns situated near to the mountains were the worst impacted with snow falling to decent accumulations in Methven, Mayfield, Staveley and Mt Somers.

And heading into last night there was still expected to be more to come.

The MetService issued a severe weather warning yesterday, saying in the 33 hours from 9am yesterday to 6pm today, the district could expect 20 to 30 centimetres above 400 metres, with 10 centimetres likely down to 200 metres.

Snow fell on and off yesterday afternoon in Methven after the sun peeked briefly through the clouds in the morning.

About eight centimetres of snow had settled on the ground overnight.

Temperatures in the ski town hovered just above freezing as visitors and residents got out and about.

Mt Hutt was closed for the day after drifts blocked the access road.

20 centimetres of new snow fell

overnight on Tuesday with more snow falling as Wednesday developed and the second cold front settled in during the afternoon.

With temperatures expected to plummet again overnight, drivers were again being cautioned to drive carefully on Thursday morning with the strong possibility of the presence of black ice on the roads.

Five guilty in kidnap case

Five men accused of manslaughter and kidnapping over the death of an Auckland woman who fell from the boot of a moving car have been found guilty.

Jindarat Prutsiriporn, 50, died in hospital two days after falling from the car’s boot and hitting her head on the road as it sped off from traffic lights in the suburb of Papatoetoe in March last year.

Eleven people were arrested following her death and six have been on trial, facing manslaughter and kidnapping charges, the rest earlier pleading guilty to their parts.

Following two days of deliberations and 10-weeks of evidence, a jury at the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday found Seng Liev, Apichart Korhomklang and Luigi Havea guilty of one charge of manslaughter and one of kidnapping each.

Tafito Vaifale and Joseph Haurua were also found guilty of manslaughter. They had earlier pleaded guilty to kidnapping Ms Prutsiriporn.

Tevita Fangupo was found not guilty of kidnapping by a majority jury vote of 11 to one.

Snow has no impact on roads, power

Lessons learned from past snow events has meant electricity supplies around the Ashburton District have been largely unaffected by the current snow blast that has powdered inland areas.

crews had been on standby over the past two nights but no problems had been reported on the network.

The lines rebuild after the 2006 snow when parts of the district were without power for several weeks had seen a major upgrade take place.

Hundreds of power poles were

replaced and there was significant undergrounding of lines and that meant the network was now quite robust, he said.

Ashburton District Council roading manager Brian Fauth said the snow had had virtually no effect on the district’s roads.

It’s been as usual and by late afternoon yesterday the council

had fielded no calls alerting staff to snow related problems.

All roads around the district were open and while there was some snow on the ArundelRakaia Gorge Road and the Ashburton Gorge Road, graders had been run over both to keep them clear, Fauth said.

While there was insufficient

snow to create problems on roads, low temperatures and rain meant ice was likely to form on many roads and that hazard would be exacerbated if snow settled on top of the ice, he said.

“With that in mind, we’d suggest people stay off the roads if possible and if they do drive they need to take care.”

Local SPCA to remain independent after changes

By refusing to be part of a restructured, national SPCA organisation, Ashburton’s John Keeley says he’s ensured that assets owned by people of Mid Canterbury stayed in local hands.

Ashburton was one of just two of New Zealand’s SPCA branches to take a stand against what they saw as a drive to corporatise the work of the animal welfare organisation.

Rather than the 46 branches running their own businesses with their own committee and staff, the national body has been pushing for many months to bring every SPCA under the RNZSPCA umbrella, saying this would ensure the best possible animal welfare outcome.

Keeley has disagreed from the outset and at the organisation’s recent annual meeting he and the representative of the Waiheke SPCA were the only two to refuse to join the new organisation and one, Timaru, that did not cast a vote.

“I said to them at the meeting, that today’s the day the SPCA died.”

Effectively the 42 branches that supported the merger had given away all of their locally-owned assets for no return, Keeley said.

If he’d bowed to pressure to support a single organisation the assets the Mid Canterbury community had fundraised for would have become part of a national pool, he said.

“I’ve made sure that all of our buildings and all of our money is ours. If we’d gone with them we’d

have handed over everything.”

When the assets of every SPCA are pooled, there’s likely to be around $84 million in the pot, Keeley said.

Over the years some branches had handed over their independence to the national body, but many continued to operate successfully with their own governance and fundraising.

Since the vote count he’s heard nothing from the national executive but in refusing to be part of the new deal, he knows he’s bought into a fight. He’s likely to lose his inspector’s accreditation and the local organisation could be forced to change its name. That’s a legal challenge Keeley says he’s looking forward to fighting.

He doesn’t care about the warrant; losing that would make it easier to use a commonsense, rather than a red tape and rules, approach to animal welfare, he said.

“I’d be happy without it. We could do a lot more work without all the rules. It’ll take the shackles off in a way without the rules of the Animal Welfare Act.” His work is unpaid, that won’t change and he believes the local organisation can’t be forced to change its name either.

“We’re registered as the Mid Canterbury SPCA under the Charities Act so that’s where the argument will be.”

The new national body will come into effect on November 1 and that will mean change for most branches, but for Mid Canterbury’s SPCA, it will be business as usual, Keeley said.

Labour Party leader visits town

Members of the Ashburton Citizens’ Association and Ashburton Menzshed had the opportunity to fire questions at the Labour Party leader, Andrew Little, when he visited the district yesterday.

Ten weeks out from the general election, Little met with the groups to discuss the major issues facing New Zealand and to answer burning questions about Labour’s policies.

Little addressed his five priority areas of concern – firstly affirming his promise of a big, government-led housing programme to address the nationwide housing shortage.

Little also spoke about his vision for better-funded health services, future-proof education services, higher employment

rates among 16-to-14-year-olds, and his intended regional development fund to build thriving regional economies.

The Ashburton Citizens’ Association quizzed Little on his plans to tackle local water issues.

“We are committed to setting a swimmable water standard, and we will use a water levy to fund the needed clean-up.” Little said.

“We have to work out a better way of allocating water resources.”

Little also addressed concerns about the core role of the local government and ensuring the citizen voice is heard.

“Local government is one of the most important members of government in the country ... and we have a strong view that there has to be a close relation-

ship between central and local government.”

Little’s visit to wintery Canterbury comes shortly after of his Families Package release, which promises Winter Energy payments of up to $700 a month to a million New Zealanders.

Little wants to ensure that more New Zealanders utilise adequate heating, with fewer people hospitalised due to damp or cold housing.

Little concluded his meeting with the Ashburton Citizens Association by saying it will be “a very interesting election”.

“Nine years on, we’ve got some major challenges. And if we’re going to address them we’re going to have to change the government.”

Citizens’ association president Gordon Mockford said he was “very pleased” with how the meeting went.

■ METHVEN VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE

Brent Anderson following in his father’s footsteps

For as long as he can remember, Brent Anderson has had some association with the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The dad of two adult daughters who lives in Methven with wife Lynda, is the new brigade chief, and will take over the reins this coming weekend.

He is filling big shoes left behind by Selwyn Allred, who is retiring after 50 years’ service, and is also following in his late father Dave Anderson’s footsteps.

Dave was chief for 21 years and a brigade member for about 35 years.

This meant that Anderson grew up with the reality of knowing that at any moment the siren could sound and his dad would immediately have to race off to the station.

“It didn’t worry me. I probably thought it was a good thing because they were going to help someone that needed help,” he said.

Going to the station with his dad when he was on the Sunday lawn-mowing roster was just as memorable.

Helping out with the mowing, which was at the back of the fire station on McKerrow Street, was something he had enjoyed.

Anderson became a builder

and operates BA and LR Anderson Builders in Methven.

He joined the brigade about 28 years ago and one of his first big call-outs was to a Methven su-

permarket on Main Street in the early 1990s.

The building was extensively damaged and had to be demolished after the blaze.

The former senior station officer said he felt honoured to be chosen in the new chief fire officer role and there was also a new deputy chief.

Five applications for the two roles had been received altogether and the new deputy was David McLeod, who had already taken up his post, having replaced Mike Seque.

Anderson was also looking forward to working with the newly-amalgamated Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) organisation, although it would not really change how the brigade operated at ground level.

Eventually fire station colours and signs and logos would be changing.

The Methven brigade is a busy one, having had 85 call-outs to the year ending June 30, and a couple of call-outs since.

Report warns of alpine species risk

A new International Nature Climate Change report has warned of the rapid extinction of alpine species as temperatures rise across the globe and Mid Canterbury’s slopes are not exempt.

The report, based on findings from the European Alps, identified that rising temperatures and increased human activity can bolster the spread of weeds and invasive species at the expense of other native species.

Within Mid Canterbury, species like buttercups, lilies, snow tussocks and daisies may be put at risk by introduced weeds like the wilding conifers, rowan trees, lupines, sycamores and thistles, which have been found to spread at double the rate of their native counterparts with increasing global temperatures.

The report points to tourist activity and the use of alpine roads as major threats.

According to Ashburton Forest and Bird chairwoman, Edith Smith, the easier it is to

access higher areas of Mid Canterbury, the easier it is for destructive species to reach these heights also.

“Everywhere we put a footstep, if we don’t know what’s under our foot, there’s potential for impact.”

She says as temperatures increase and land use changes in higher alpine areas, our natural biota are made susceptible.

“They have evolved in a particular habitat and as people reach these habitats, they become very vulnerable.

“And it’s not just the trees, it’s the insect life associated.”

July is biosecurity month and the New Zealand Biosecurity Institute encourages people to consider their individual and collaborative impacts on the environment.

“The success of protecting New Zealand from biological threats from coming into and also within New Zealand is everyone working together. The emphasis of Biosecurity month 2017 is on collaboration between agencies, councils, government departments, NGOs and the community.”

What is it with our morbid curiosity?

hat is it with our desire to see things that we really don’t need to see in this country?

Like it’s a favourite Kiwi pastime, rubber-necking is a bit of an issue in New Zealand and a particularly hard egg to crack.

We see drama, controversy or debate and we flock to it like a moth to the proverbial flame.

If there’s a fire, you can guarantee that 90 per cent of the people who are there watching or driving past are out and about with the sole purpose of checking out what’s going on.

The Port Hills fires were a perfect example of it.

People flocked to vantage points, no matter how dangerous they might have been or what sort of danger they could be putting themselves, or others, in.

And for what?

The chance to see some flames? The exact same kind you can find at home when you light the fire?

When news began to trickle through on Tuesday night that it was snowing, it was like Ashburton had awoken a beast suddenly everyone was flocking to the mountain village to find solitude.

The road from Winchmore to Methven was dangerous. Snow lay on both sides of the road and had formed some tricky wee spots in the middle too.

Yet people drove with reckless abandon.

They wanted to see snow and they didn’t care if they hurt themselves, or anyone else, in the process.

And again, for what?

To see some white powder falling out of the sky?

When a government agency or local government issue a release asking people to avoid driving if they possibly can they are doing so with the interests of the entire community at heart.

No-one wants to hear of a tragedy where someone drove off the road while doing a bit of thrillseeking, yet we all seem to do it.

I know when the fire siren goes that all I want to do is chase it and see what is happening.

And it takes a bit of mental fortitude to stop myself from doing exactly that sometimes.

But we need to weigh up some of our decisions a bit more.

Think a little more carefully about the potential outcomes.

Just be more sensible really.

White House blindsided The White House has been thrust into chaos after days of ever-worsening revelations about a meeting between Donald Trump Jr and a lawyer characterised as representing the Russian government, as the president fumes against his enemies and senior aides circle each other with suspicion, according to top White House officials and outside advisers.

US President Donald Trump – who has been hidden from public view since returning last weekend from a divisive international summit – is enraged that the Russia cloud still hangs over his presidency and is exasperated that his oldest son and namesake has become engulfed by it, said people who have spoken with him this week.

The disclosure that Trump Jr met with a Russian attorney, believing he would receive incriminating information about Hillary Clinton as part of the Kremlin’s effort to boost his father’s candidacy, has set back the administration’s faltering agenda and rattled the senior leadership team.

Wildfires wane; evacuees return Relief was arriving after a rough stretch of wildfires all around the US West, with firefighters slowly surrounding once-fierce blazes and evacuees starting to stream back home.

Authorities surveying the damage from a blaze in Northern California said yesterday that at least 41 homes and 55 other buildings had been destroyed near the town of Oroville.

Some residents had returned home after fleeing the flames in

the grassy foothills of the Sierra Nevada, about 97 kilometres north of Sacramento, but thousands remained evacuated as the fire entered its fifth day. The blaze burned nearly 23 square kilometres and injured four firefighters.

Crews were making progress against dozens of wildfires across the western US. In Colorado, crews were winding down the fight against a wildfire that temporarily forced hundreds of people to

evacuate near the resort town of Breckenridge. Firefighters built containment lines around at least 85 per cent of the blaze.

In Arizona, recent monsoon rain has helped stop the growth of a wildfire in mountains overlooking Tucson and an evacuation order for the summer-retreat community of Summerhaven has been lifted.

In Nevada, fire crews were getting the upper hand on a wildland blaze that shut down US Interstate 80 along the Ne-

vada-California line.

Three new California fires made trouble yesterday.

One of them, just east of San Jose, destroyed two homes before its growth was stopped.

Another broke out in San Diego County and quickly surged to over 1.5 square kilometres.

In Northern California, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office issued mandatory evacuations along four roads near a 2-acre fire burning north of Auburn.

Guest nights continue rise in May strongest percentage gains, up 20 per cent from a year earlier to 107,000 guest nights in the month, while guest nights in Hawkes Bay, Gisborne rose 15 per cent to 96,000 and Taranaki, ManawatuWanganui posted a 14 per cent rise to 120,000.

Guest nights in Canterbury rose 8.4 per cent, driven by more guest nights in the Mackenzie district.

Kaikoura guest nights recovered to similar levels as for 2016, down just 2.1 per cent versus the same month a year ago.

New Zealand bank profits shrank in the first three months of the year as smaller lenders chased market share at the expense of margin.

Net profit slipped 2.9 per cent to $1.2 billion in the three months ended March 31 for the country’s licensed banks, with five of the nine lenders surveyed reporting smaller earnings, KPMG’s quarterly financial institutions performance survey showed. Net interest income shrank 3 per cent to $69.03 billion and net interest margin shrank 9 basis points in the quarter to 2.01 per cent.

New Zealand’s lenders have faced shrinking margins over the

past year as intense competition for mortgages left them with little wiggle room in boosting interest income while at the same time greater regulatory capital requirements and the prospect of tighter global monetary policy has pushed up their own borrowing costs.

That margin shrinkage was seen most acutely among New Zealand’s smaller lenders in the March quarter, with Kiwibank, SBS Bank, the Cooperative Bank and TSB Bank all posting doubledigit contractions. Of the minnows, just Heartland Bank posted a single-digit decline, 9 basis points. Westpac Banking Corp

was the only major lender to post double-digit shrinkage at 17 basis points.

Still, in giving up profitability, the smaller lenders largely expanded their loan books at a faster pace than the majors in the threemonth period, with Kiwibank’s gross loans rising 2.3 per cent, SBS’s gaining 5.1 per cent, Cooperative Bank boosting loans 3 per cent and TSB’s loans expanding 4.8 per cent.

Across all the banks, gross loans rose 1.2 per cent to $389.92 billion in the three months ended March 31 and were 7 per cent higher than a year earlier.

Low lake levels affecting power prices Hydro lake levels fell to 65 per cent of the average in June, although the rate of decline eased towards the end of the month because of moderate inflows.

It was the lowest level for a June month since 2008. Inflows were 94 per cent of the average in June but that was skewed to the North Island.

Forsyth Barr broker Damian Foster said the low levels meant Meridian Energy called its swap option with Genesis and continued strong electricity demand in June led to high wholesale prices.

Benmore averaged $117.80 a MWh, nearly twice the May average.

Lake levels should be sufficient to get through the winter and the short-dated ASX futures prices were only $3 MWh higher than the long-dated prices at Otahuhu, he said.

Wholesale electricity prices had shown a visible trend upwards as

temperatures cooled and the low hydrology conditions continued.

Prices peaked on June 21 due to a combination of high demand and low wind generation.

Foster said South Island hydro catchments remained well below average.

Contact’s Clutha catchment was just 27 per cent of average on July 6.

The country’s largest storage lake, Pukaki, was 54 per cent of average and Meridian’s Manapouri catchment was the only lake to add storage in the month.

Mercury Energy was likely to have a strong end to the financial year as Lake Taupo was the only hydro catchment with above average storage, he said.

Electricity demand, excluding New Zealand Aluminium Smelters, was again strong.

Maximum temperatures across main cities averaged 14.2°C, the coldest start to winter since 2013.

Customer churn, or people changing providers, bounced back above the 12 month average from low April levels.

This month, SaveAwatt released its offers to 12,000 households.

SaveAwatt chief executive Tim Rudkin said the dry winter and rising wholesale prices might have affected retailers’ offers into the programme.

He also noted falling hydro storage and rising spot prices might have made the scheme’s offers more attractive to price-exposed customers.

As a spot price provider it was expected to become increasingly difficult for Flick to maintain customer gains. Pulse Energy also had solid customer growth.

Genesis had lost customers in 15 of the last 16 months. Mercury and Meridian also recorded customer falls during the month. Contact was the only large generator-retailer to record gains.

New Zealand national guest nights rose in May as the strong influx of tourists continued and as domestic stays also pushed higher.

Total guest nights climbed 7.3 per cent to 2.5 million in April compared with the same month a year earlier, Statistics New Zealand said.

Domestic guest nights gained 6.4 per cent to 1.46 million while international guest nights rose 8.7 per cent to 1.04 million, the agency said. Short-term visitor arrivals to New Zealand were up 8 per cent in May 2017 compared with May 2016, with the biggest change in arrivals being from Australia - up 12 per cent.

Seasonally adjusted guest nights for May 2017 fell 2.5 per cent compared with April 2017, retreating from some of the gains in March and April.

The data show guest nights rose 7.6 per cent in the North Island and 6.9 per cent in the South Island from the year-earlier period, with all 12 regions of the country and all four accommodation types reporting more guest nights.

Local Landcorp farms not for sale

Landcorp will not be selling any of its Mid Canterbury farms in the near future, despite calls for the state-owned enterprise to start returning a dividend to the Government.

Last week the contents of a 2014 review of Landcorp carried out by Deloitte was made public.

The review advised the Government to sell the business, which involves 140 farms and 1.6 million stock units spread over around 376,000ha of land it either own or leases. It owns about 158,500ha of that land.

State-owned enterprises Minister Todd McClay has since said that option is not on the table at this stage, but he has called on the asset rich but cash poor organisation to start paying the Government a dividend again, something it has not done for the past two years. That may mean selling some properties.

However, a Landcorp spokesman said it plans to keep the four properties it owns in Mid Canterbury, three farms close to Ashburton and Rosebank, a support unit between Ashburton and Mayfield, all of which are dairy farms, and all of which are performing well, he said.

Landcorp has identified some properties in its portfolio it is thinking of selling to free up money, he said, but no Mid Canterbury properties fell into that category.

Landcorp’s Mayfield farm is one of four properties the state-owned enterprise owns in Mid Canterbury.

Robinson steps down AgResearch’s new chairman, Jeff Grant, has paid tribute to his predecessor Sam Robinson for nine years of work leading the organisation through some of its biggest-ever changes.

“Sam has led from the front in advocating for the important science that AgResearch does to support New Zealand’s agriculture, and we have continued to see top quality research coming from the scientists even as funding has been harder to come by,” Grant said.

“Sam has been absolutely committed to seeing through the organisation’s Future Footprint programme, where he’s pushed strongly for investment in new science facilities in conjunction with both Massey and Lincoln universities as the key to continuing to attract top graduates and shaping New Zealand’s pastoral farming sector through good science.”

Grant previously held the role of deputy chairman, and has taken over as chairman after Robinson stepped down having served out his third consecutive term.

Lambing keeps coming earlier

Ashburton hobby farmer Graham Matthews’ ewes just keep lambing earlier and earlier – this year beginning in May. Matthews, who leases about eight hectares on Mitcham Road, said his ewes, which he bought as wiltshire ewe lambs about three years ago, had been lambing in June but that date has continued to come forward, with this year the first lambs arriving in the last week of May. So far this year he’s had about 30 twins and 20 singles, with another five ewes likely to lamb this week.

He uses a poll dorset ram provided by Peter and Matt Ponsonby of Tuapeka West.

His ewes will lamb again at the end of November or the start of December.

Matthews said he does nothing extra in terms of treatment to encourage early

lambing. “They’re just doing it on their own,” he said.

Last year’s early lambs went away in early October, he said, receiving about $131 for the singles and $126 for the twins.

The premium available for early lambs is well worth it, he said, and with the lamb market a bit higher than it has been in recent years, he is hoping to get up to $7/kg this year.

These days Matthews sells his lambs down at Temuka, lamenting the closure of the Tinwald yards. He said the local yards made it much easier for the small lifestyle farmers like himself who ran a few sheep to clean up their paddocks.

Mathews keeps his lambs at his Mitcham Road property for about two or three weeks before they are brought to Wilf and Janie Cunliffe’s property just out of Tinwald, where they stay until there are sold.

The zone finals for the NZ Mixed Pairs and Mixed Fours was recently held in Christchurch, where the pairs combination of Grant Wilson and Chris Talbot were successful in winning their zone for the mixed pairs and will be heading to Upper Hutt later in September! Both players were in action again in the mixed fours event, where they teamed up with Graeme Chapman and Rowena Mackenzie. The four started well in the event, but were unable to walk away with the spoils, placing third!

The representative team has been in action once again, this time in the Triangular event which is held annually against Timaru and Oamaru. Eight teams of fours from each centre competing, playing each centre twice. Results at the end of the days play saw Ashburton and Timaru tied on 20.5 wins each, so a count back on points was required and Ashburton came out victors 327pts to 326pts. Oamaru was third on 7 wins and 215pts.

The latest championship played has been the Men’s and Ladies Championship singles. In the men’s event 18 players contested for the title and 7 qualified. They were Ken Johnstone, Neil Atkinson, Ken Mackenzie, Grant Wilson, Tom Palatchie, Matt Markham and Geoff Laird. Making it through to the semi’s saw Wilson defeat Mackenzie 14-5 and the semi saw Markham defeat Johnstone 21-3. The final between Wilson and Markham was tightly contested with the contest tied 8-8 after 10 ends. Wilson scored a 3 on the 11th end and was able to hold on to take the title!

The Ladies Singles saw 9 players contest with 4 players making it through qualifying! Those were Bernice Laird, Chris Talbot, Rowena Mackenzie and Joan Hardy. In the semi’s Hardy defeated Laird 13-12 and in the other semi Talbot defeated Mackenzie 15-3. In the final Talbot was too good for Hardy winning 16-3!

With Wilson and Talbot winning their events, it gives them 10 titles each and both their second gold stars! Well

Ashburton Musical Club Ashburton Musical Club and visitors were entertained by the Norwest Brass Band from Christchurch on Sunday July 9 at 2pm. The band of 25 instrumentalists and conductor Bill Vail, gave an enthusiastic performance to a poorly attended concert. The soloists were outstanding, especially the trombone soloist who is a NZ champ and has been the past three years. The band was formed four years ago, and a credit to conductor Bill Vail who is encouraging young students as well as experienced band members to perform at a high standard. The programme was as follows: The Standard of St. George, Concert Prelude, Concerto de Aranjuez, (soloist James Paget on flugelhorn) The Lord of the Rings, Harlem Rag March, Unaccompanied solo – Dale Vail (trombone) Partita -Bach – written for violin. Only You - soloists Dale (trombone) and Sylvia Vail (cornet).

All in the April evening, Spartacus, Hello Dolly. After an interval: The Big Top, Mad World, The Bare Necessities – soloist Bob Grimwood ( Eflat Tuba), Ye Banks and Braes, Blue Bells of Scotland with variations – soloist Dale on Trombone, Light as Air – combination of “ A lighter shade of pale and Air on a G String”, Brass Band Boogie, Skyfall and My Way. Those in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful harmonies, toe tapping rhythms and very talented soloists as well as the chance to talk to band members while partaking of afternoon tea. Our next concert is on Saturday August 12 at 2pm when we will be hosting the Mid Canterbury Choir and Australian Choir (Serendipity).

Ashburton Photographic Society It was a busy month with a field trip to Christchurch and up to the Gondola and a look at the lights of the city as night fell. The photos that I have seen were beautiful.

Well, well! This has been a week of highs and lows. Foremost in the highs is the announcement of the South Island team to compete in Palmerston North in August.

We had a lovely Mystery Car trip to four craft places. Two were in Hinds.

A young lady who has a studio and makes stained glass items, then used material. (Funky things), then lunch at Fen Leadley’s home. The afternoon saw us at a studio where a lady makes pretty things for girls and carrycots and lastly at a home where a lady collects porcelain dolls and her husband has a great display of model trains.

Wahine Club The Wahine Club have been busy with weekly practices for their ‘Huis’, it makes the winter seem to go much faster with the regular social contact.

The Hui held on June 25 was well attended by members and friends. This time it was presented on a Sunday afternoon instead of Thursday night.

Programme was themed around ‘Family’ and the old popular songs including Blackboard of my Heart, Two Little Girls in Blue, Heart of my Heart, Grandad, Sisters and Big Brother.

These songs brought back memories of younger years. Also some fun skits and readings gave everyone some light hearted entertainment. Duets by Bella and Robin completed the afternoon items. Afternoon tea was served and enjoyed before heading for home on a very cold afternoon.

Wahine Club joined with the members of the Ashburton Savage/Friendship and Entertainment group for a combined concert on July 4. An enjoyable evening began with a ‘pot luck’ tea and the entertainment for the evening was provided by several items from both groups and ended with a dessert supper.

President Pat O’Brien welcomed members and Carol Ball NZRC Humanitarian Services Manager. Child’s Play Pre School Tinwald.

The knitting project realised 391 pairs of fingerless mittens donated to new entrants in 18 schools throughout Mid Canterbury and to the Newcomers Network. Many delightful thankyou photos have been received by the branch.

Over the past three years over 1200 mittens have been knitted and distributed.

The Cultural Awareness workshop sessions have been attended each month with the June one being on the Tongan and Samoan cultures.

Members were thanked for the Home Baking which will be given to Hospice Mid Canterbury. The next meeting is on September 5 when the branch hosts members of the Foundation of the Blind.

The General meeting was closed and the Annual Meeting was declared open with the reading of the NZRC Core Values — People, Integrity, Partnership, Diversity, Leadership and Innovation.

Minutes of the 2016 Annual meeting were read and confirmed.

President Pat O’Brien presented the Annual report of the year’s activities and thanked members for all their efforts throughout the year. Treasurer Audrey Bruce presented the 2016-2017 Balance Sheet.

The Election of Officers was chaired by Carol Ball. She thanked the Branch for the continued work for Red Cross and the connection with the community.

Later she spoke of her visit to Kaikoura the day before, to deliver 250 Winter Warmer Packs to families and to meet with the local branch and the Maori Warden Council.

She was thanked by Jill Bennett. A lovely lunch was served concluding the meeting.

Lydia Ko sidesteps Trump issue

Bauer takes punch on chin Kiwi Jack Bauer is relishing his new role on a Quick-Step Floors team dominating sprint finishes at this year’s Tour de France ... but like his TV action namesake, it comes with an element of danger.

On his fourth tour, Bauer apparently drew the ire of Frenchman Nacer Bouhanni, who was later fined $NZ280 and penalised a minute in overall standings for throwing a punch in the final stages of today’s 178km 10th stage from Périgueux to Bergerac.

“There is a punch on, with Nacer Bouhanni in an abusive conversation,” observed SBS commentator Matt Keenan. “It looked like Jack Bauer, not the man to mess with.

“Careful, Nacer, you’re out of your weight division.”

Added co-commentator and three-time tour points winner Robbie McEwen of Australia:

“And quite possibly out of his element as well.”

The confrontation came as teams jostled for position at the end of a relatively flat journey that suited sprint specialists within the peleton.

Bauer’s job is to deliver QuickStep speedster Marcel Kittel to the front of the field and Kittel’s four stage wins so far suggest Bauer is doing a great job.

“Because the finale is so technical, positioning is so key and speeds are so high approaching the final three kilometres,” reflected Bauer, 32, afterwards.

“When you come to a finale like today, if you’re out of position, you’re not really making it up without a huge effort. If you have to make a huge effort that distance from the line, you’re not going to sprint for the win.”

Bauer’s exchange with Bouhanni, 26, came about seven kilometres from home, as the

Quick-Step team began their drive to the front, perhaps nudging the Frenchman out of their path in the process.

Bouhanni would finish sixth in Kittel’s wake, with Bauer 25th and 126th overall.

But it’s not the first time Bouhanni’s temper has got the better of him – he missed last year’s French championship and Tour de France, after breaking his hand in an altercation with hotel guests.

“I’ll stop cycling around 32 years of age and that will leave me at least two years to go as high as I can in boxing,” he told L’Équipe magazine in 2014. “Just like as a cyclist, I’ll be 100 per cent invested in it.

“Boxing is my passion and cycling is my job.”

And Bauer also has a reputation as one of cycling’s toughest hombres. His 2013 Tour debut ended early, when he left the

road at high speed and ploughed through a wire fence, suffering gruesome facial injuries.

The following year, he returned to so nearly capture a stage win, when he was part of a two-man breakaway that led for more than 200km, but was gobbled up by the peleton 75 metres from the finish.

With 11 stages remaining on this Tour, he looms as a key figure in Kittel’s quest for the points title.

“He’s obviously on a roll – his confidence is probably on an alltime high – and it’s great to be part of,” said Bauer. “[Kittel] is a legend, very relaxed both on the bike and off the bike, but inside the last 3km, he changes ... he becomes a bit of a bull.

“There are a few more sprint opportunities and we expect we can deliver again in coming days.”

French: Why we refused to help Team NZ Groupama Team France have confirmed they declined a request from help from Team New Zealand after the pitch-pole that left Aotearoa in tatters - but say America’s Cup defenders Oracle had nothing to do with the decision.

In Saturday’s Weekend Herald, Team New Zealand principal Matteo de Nora revealed the eventual Cup winners asked Team France, who had been knocked out of the campaign, for assistance after the accident in the Louis Vuitton Cup challenger series.

Team New Zealand’s boat suffered serious damage when it tipped, and shore crew worked through the night to get the high-tech vessel back in the water and in contention for the challenger series.

De Nora said the French refused almost immediately. Then came a request for a payment of $468,500 if they were to consider helping.

The long-time Team New Zealand supporter then said that before Team New Zealand had time to consider the payment and search for funding, the of-

fer was abruptly withdrawn, and De Nora wondered if Oracle Team USA had heard about the possible deal.

Team France said suspicions over whether Oracle had spoken to Team France about providing assistance were “false and unfounded”.

Team France also said it did not request any financial compensation from Team New Zealand.

The syndicate confirmed it had fielded an approach from Team New Zealand chief operating officer Kevin Shoebridge –

not team boss Grant Dalton.

It stated ongoing testing and sponsorship commitments, as well as a desire to be impartial during the challenger series finals, were behind the decision not to help Team New Zealand.

“We were still sailing after being eliminated to pursue our training and fulfil sponsoring opportunities for the 36th America’s cup,” Team France said.

“Therefore, having no spare parts on site, this would have compromised our plans.

Lydia Ko deftly dodged questions on the polarising figure of Donald Trump, who casts a large shadow over the US Women’s Open golf tournament this week.

Ko, who revealed she is building Lego houses as a form of relaxation, found a media pack more interested in the White House. The biggest event in women’s golf is being held at Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey and Ko was one of the first players quizzed on Trump.

The United States Golf Association had faced intense pressure from women’s groups and Democratic senators to move the event because of Trump’s comments about women and minorities, namely audio that surfaced during the campaign of Trump vulgarly describing his interactions with women. The USGA refused, keeping the event at the course located a few kilometres from its headquarters in Far Hills, New Jersey.

Ko was peppered with questions about Trump, who is expected to make an appearance over the weekend after visiting France for Bastille Day celebrations on July 14.

Brittany Lincicome, a seventime winner on the LPGA Tour, recently told the Chicago Tribune she hoped the president would stay away from the event so the focus will be on the golfers and not him. Ko was asked what she thought of those comments.

“Everyone has their own opinion and I think Britt probably didn’t say it so literally but, you know, I don’t know exactly when or if President Trump is going to come here,” Ko said.

“If he does, I’m sure he’s here to see some great golf like he did before. If he does, that’s cool. But everybody is free to have their own thought and to me I have no idea when or if he is coming so we’ll just have to see then.”

It’s unclear whether Trump will attend the tournament said Matt Sawicki, director of USGA championships.

Ko, who had a chance to win the US Open last year before a final round meltdown, was asked if she had any reservations about playing the tournament or even withdrawing in protest over the Trump connection. She side-stepped the question like an All Black.

“I’ve always been excited to play the US Women’s Open. I had my best finish at this tournament last year. I was leading going into the final round and it was an experience like no other.

“To me it’s more excitement.

When I first got to see the course here through the media day I felt this was going to be a fantastic golf course for us and come in here this week and seeing it in such - in a great conditions, I think I’m more excited than concerned.” - NZME

Dunn, Orange eye elusive target Blair Orange has a goal for next season – he wants to buy Dexter Dunn more food.

Like lots of food. In fact, he would be happy to buy Dunn dinner every weekend next term.

Because as it turns out the two men who dominate the national harness racing drivers’ premiership spend a huge amount of time together.

“I joked to my wife the other day I spend more time sleeping in the same room as Dexter than I do with her,” Orange said.

Orange and Dunn have won over 400 races between them this season, Dunn setting the new national record of 221 last Friday.

Largely lost in that clatter is the fact Orange has reined 183 winners, the closest any other driver has ever got to 200 wins a season.

“I won’t get to the 200 for the season now, I’ve run out of time,” admits Orange.

“But it gives me a goal for next season. It is a lot of travel and a lot of hard work but to be honest I’ve enjoyed it.”

Orange and his racetrack nemesis Dunn are great friends off the track, which is just as well as they travel to almost all meetings outside Canterbury together.

And that is a lot of meetings. They have both had well over 1000 drives this season while Matthew Williamson with 711 is our next busiest driver.

Blair Orange By comparison, Samantha Collett with 846 rides has been New Zealand’s busiest jockey with only Alysha Collett and Chris Johnson also having ridden over 700 mounts.

“We do travel a lot and often that means driving six hours each way to Invercargill and lots of Forbury trips,” Orange said.

“So having Dex there, somebody to talk to and share the (car) driving with is a huge help.”

Surely it must frustrating, spending so much time with the person keeping you from the harness racing crown?

“I’d love to win the premiership but Dex is like a good horse. I can get close but I can’t get past him.

“But the reality is we are happy for each other when one of us has a good day.

“The rule is the one who has the better day has to pay for dinner or a few beers.

So I hope I end up buying him dinner more often next season.”

The thought of the two men who so thoroughly rule the premiership travelling together will raise suspicions among the cynics but Orange says tactics are rarely discussed.

“If I am driving a horse that Dex drove the previous week I’ll ask him what he made of it.

“But we don’t talk about how actual races are going to pan out and neither of us actually drive like that.

“Some people might think we have an idea what is going to happen in races but when you drive as many different horses under as many different circumstances as we do you learn to take the races as they come because things rarely go to plan. So I don’t have a plan these days.”

Orange says his workload has made him a better driver now than when he was a regular group one winner working

for the All Stars. “When you are driving as much as I am now you are always updating you knowledge base on horses because you are out there all the time.

“And I do more video analysis now than I used to. When I was working for Mark and Nat it didn’t matter as much because the horses I was on were so good.”

An official kick up the backside at the start of last year when Orange was fined and suspended for being over the alcohol limit on a race day after a social night helped refocus him.

“I learned my lesson and it helped me take things more seriously. Talking to a few people after that happened made me realise I’m lucky to have the career I do.”

With key supporters like Nigel McGrath and Paul Court having good numbers for next season as well as the continued support from part-time bosses Ken and Tony Barron, he thinks cracking the 200 next season is possible.

“That is one of my aims before I look more into the training side of things in maybe five years or so,” says the 39-yearold.

“To break 200, win a premiership and even get to the World Drivers’ Champs would be great while I’d love to win a Rowe Cup or the Dominion, because I love the trotters.”

In brief Forbury meet cancelled The scheduled race meeting for Forbury Park tonight has been postponed due to weather conditions and will now be run on Saturday afternoon (July 15). This is due to weather conditions making travel unsafe for participants. “Safety of the participants is of paramount concern. The opportunity to race on Saturday and make a go of the meeting was the only logical course of action,” said Gerard Cayford, the president of the Forbury Park Trotting Club. The new start time will be 11.45am, the details of the full race meeting will be will be updated in due course.

The Black Sox have plummetted to a shock defeat against Venezuela on a day of highs and lows at the world softball championships.

Venezuela, who lost to the Kiwis in the 2013 world final at Albany, triumphed 7-3 in Canada yesterday, their first-ever win over the Black Sox. New Zealand’s remaining pool games should bring victories over Denmark and Botswana, but they are headed for a three-way tie with Japan and Venezuela in the race for the favoured top two positions in their pool.

Kirk in NZ Open

Rybarikova reaches semis

Australian golfer Katherine Kirk, fresh off her victory on the LPGA Tour yesterday, has confirmed her start in September’s McKayson New Zealand Women’s Open in Auckland. Kirk scored her third LPGA Tour victory on Monday (NZ time) with a one-shot win at the Thornberry Creek Classic in Wisconsin, USA to take her career earnings to over $NZ6 million.

The Australian, who played in the first New Zealand Women’s Open in 2009, yesterday confirmed she will line-up at the first ever LPGA event in New Zealand, to be staged at Windross Farm golf course near Auckland on September 28 October 1.

Ranked 87th and unseeded at Wimbledon, Magdalena Rybarikova is making quite a run at the grass-court major.

The 28-year-old Slovak reached the semi-finals at the All England Club yesterday, beating CoCo Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-3 and improving her record on grass to 18-1 this season.

“I won Birmingham (in 2009).

Now I won two titles, ITF, I made semi-finals in Nottingham, and I won against good players,” said Rybarikova, referring to a couple of lower-tier tournaments and the Aegon Open.

“I just recently played ITFs in Surbiton. I was thinking that I was nervous more there than today. I have no idea how come I was that calm. Obviously I

was nervous, but I was not like I would shake. Sometimes I can get really nervous and really tight. But this match I was quite positive.”

Rybarikova is the lowest ranked player to make it to the Wimbledon semi-finals since Zheng Jie did it in 2008 when she was ranked No. 133. She had never before even played in the second week of a major tournament and is the first Slovakian woman to reach the semi-finals at the All England Club.

“Obviously I was dreaming about it since I was a little kid, to be semi-final in the Wimbledon. I think all the players are dreaming about this to happen,” Rybarikova said. “Wimbledon is my favorite Grand Slam, that’s

for sure. Also playing on grass, it’s my favourite surface. I really enjoy playing on grass.”

Rybarikova will next face Garbine Muguruza in the semi-finals. Muguruza, the 2016 French Open champion, reached the Wimbledon final two years ago.

For Rybarikova, her past experiences at the All England Club are not so impressive. She has lost in the first round eight times and only once reached the third round, in 2015. That equalled her best result at any Grand Slam tournament.

This year, however, she beat third-seeded Karolina Pliskova in the second round. Pliskova will take over as the No. 1-ranked player on Monday.

“I think she’s playing the best

tennis of her career right now,” Vandeweghe said of Rybarikova.

“She’s won a lot of tournaments.

She’s playing really well.”

Rybarikova missed the second half of the 2016 season after undergoing surgery on her left wrist and right knee. She missed the Australian Open while still recovering.

“It was that moment during January and before Australian Open was the moment that I was thinking to myself, if this not going to work, to have another surgery or something else, I just don’t want to hear it,” Rybarikova said. “I was pretty nervous about it.”

More nervous, probably, than she was on Tuesday.

Williams through to 10th Wimbledon semi Venus Williams’ mother could not stop smiling and laughing. She had just watched her 37-year-old daughter reach the Wimbledon semi-finals for the 10th time and, well, the whole thing was just a bit hard to believe.

“She says, ‘I love my job!’ and she means it. I guess she’s kind of like a boxer: People think it’s time for her to quit because she’s too old,” Oracene Price said after leaving Centre Court, where the roof was shut because of rain.

“But she keeps getting back in the ring – and she seems to be doing pretty well. This is really amazing.” Enjoying a career renaissance deep into her 30s, despite dealing with an energy-sapping disease, Williams rode a strong serve that produced eight aces,

imposing returns and her court coverage of old to a 6-3, 7-5 victory over French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, edging closer to a sixth singles title at the All England Club.

“The competition keeps you growing,” Williams said. “You have to get better if you want to stay relevant.”

Somehow, at age 37, she’s done that. This was her 100th Wimbledon match, coming in her 20th appearance. The first of her trophies at the grass-court tournament came in 2000. And now, for the third match in a row, Williams beat a player who was born in 1997 – after she made her Grand Slam debut that year.

“The first one was 20 years ago?

Lord,” Price said, her eyes wide,

her chuckle loud. “Well, you know, that’s a long time.”

This is not exactly new, though.

Williams is the only woman to have made the fourth round at each of the past six majors, and now she’s into her third semi-final in that span. She made it that far at Wimbledon last year, too, before losing, and got to the final at the Australian Open in January, when she was beaten by her younger sister, Serena.

“Who knows if she’s lost a step?” said Williams’ coach, David Witt. “She looks pretty good to me.”

Williams revealed in 2011 that she was diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, which can sap energy and cause joint pain. As time went on, there were questions

about whether she might retire, especially after a half-dozen firstround losses at majors. But she kept going, and with her recent successes, a championship this week would return the American to the top five in the rankings for the first time in six years.

“I just always felt like I have to keep trying,” said Williams, who repeatedly took advantage of Ostapenko’s second serves at around 110km/h. “That’s all I felt like.”

To get to what would be her ninth final at the All England Club, the 10th-seeded Williams will need to beat No. 6 Johanna Konta, the first British woman in the Wimbledon semi-finals since Virginia Wade was the runner-up in 1978.

CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat said while no fixing actually took place, “Tsotsobe admitted his mistakes in contravening the CSA Anti-Corruption Code and it is clear that he was active in plans to participate in spot fixing and hence the sanction imposed on him.”

Frenzied start to fight promo Floyd Mayweather Jr. reached into a backpack and held out a $100 million cheque for the crowd of 11,000 fight fans to see.

“Let me show you what a $100 million fighter looks like,” he said.

Conor McGregor interrupted from his stool behind the podium: “That’s to the tax man.”

Mayweather replied: “You’re right. I’m the IRS, and I’m going to tax your ass.”

The undefeated boxer and the Irish UFC champion have thrown their first jabs in a summer of verbal sparring before the fighting spectacle of the year.

Mayweather and McGregor kicked off a four-city promotional tour yesterday at Staples Center, facing off in front of a raucous crowd that thoroughly enjoyed this circus’ first stop in Hollywood.

Both fighters promised a knockout, and they had a prolonged shouting match during their second face-off, with UFC President Dana White stepping

between them.

“I am fighting, and he is boxing,” McGregor said. “It’s two men at the top of their game competing. It’s two worlds colliding. That enough is reason why this is what it is.”

All but the most naive fight fans realise the promotion for this bout could be much more entertaining than the historic 154-pound fight on August 26 in Las Vegas.

McGregor and Mayweather traded clever insults and profane boasts that quickly showed why this boxing match should be a rare spectacle – before the opening bell, anyway.

“He looks good for a sevenor eight-figure fighter, but I’m a nine-figure fighter,” Mayweather said. “This (guy) made 3 million dollars his last fight, but we know that’s training camp money for me.”

The 40-year-old Mayweather has been coaxed out of his latest retirement for the colossal payday coming from this unique matchup. The bout will cost

$99.95 on high-definition payper-view, while tickets at T-Mobile Arena will range from $500 to $10,000 – and there aren’t many $500 seats.

In a tailor-made pinstripe suit that repeated a profane phrase in tiny letters as its stripe, McGregor didn’t try to disguise his glee at the prospect of his mammoth financial reward for seeing how his heavy hands can fare against Mayweather’s famed defensive skills in this cross-disciplinary experiment.

McGregor got more personal than Mayweather, going after everything from the boxer’s apparent money troubles to his attire. McGregor also risked racial offensiveness when he yelled, “Dance for me, boy! Dance for me, son!” during an exchange with Mayweather.

“He’s in a ... track suit,” McGregor said, looking at Mayweather. “He can’t even afford a suit anymore. The Rolls is a 2012 outside. He is (expletive). There’s no other way about it. I’m going to knock him out inside of four

rounds, mark my words.”

Two years after his last fight and several years after his trashtalking heyday, Mayweather rose to the promotional challenge in an energetic, biting performance. The unbeaten star led his fans in a call-and-response cheer that derided McGregor as “easy work!”

“That’s what the people want to see,” Mayweather said. “To have a sold-out arena and just give these people something just real smooth and calm, they don’t want that. That’s not what they want. These fans want entertainment, and that’s what we’re here to give them.”

And while the 40-year-old Mayweather acknowledged his skills have declined and claimed his comeback is for one fight only, he also said he has “more than enough” to beat a rookie boxer.

“We know Mr. Tapout likes to quit,” Mayweather said, referring to McGregor’s submission loss to Nate Diaz in UFC competition last year.

The Black Sticks men’s team have defeated Japan 3-1 at the Hockey World League Semi Final in Johannesburg.

It was a dominant performance from the Kiwis, who once again created plenty of scoring opportunities throughout the game.

The result puts New Zealand in a good spot on the table with four points from two games so far at the tournament.

Experienced midfielder Arun Panchia said it was pleasing to put together a solid performance and bank three points.

“We needed three points today and it was good to be able to get some connections working well on the field and put some goals into the net,” he said.

“The result puts us in a great position now with a couple of days off before a really tough match against the Aussies.”

The Black Sticks were first to score in the 18th minute when Jared Panchia picked up a deflected penalty corner drag flick from Kane Russell and hit back past the keeper.

Just out from halftime Nic Woods doubled his side’s advantage, ripping a powerful flick into the side of the net from another penalty corner.

The Black Sticks opened a 3-0 buffer midway through the third quarter after Hugo Inglis found Stephen Jenness wide open at the top of the circle for a venomous forehand shot into goal.

Japan scored a consolation goal in the 59th minute when Hirotaka Zendana managed to beat the New Zealand circle defence.

The Black Sticks have the next few days off before a huge transTasman clash against Australia at midnight this Saturday, with live coverage on SKY Sport.

Punters win big bets on Lions-All Blacks test series A lucky punter who predicted the test series between the All Blacks and the Lions would end in a draw – 10 months ago – had collected a cool $19,500 payout.

Saturday night’s third test between the two sides was drawn 15-all, and with both teams securing a win each the series was also declared a stalemate.

Although the result was a surprise to most fans, one perceptive punter saw it coming 10 months ago.

They waged $750 – at 26-1 odds for a drawn series – on September 8 last year. That $750 turned into $19,500 as the final whistle blew in controversial circumstances at Auckland’s Eden Park.

TAB spokeswoman Kate Richards said there were 4000 bets on a drawn test series, a test series score of 1-1 or a full-time draw in the final test match.

“Most of these came on the books for the third test – rather than the series books,” she said.

The 10-month old bet on a series draw was the biggest win on

either the third test or entire series ending in a tie.

Richards said the biggest single winning bet placed during the series was on the All Blacks to win by 13 plus in the first test.

The home side emerged victorious 30-15 and the bet netted $172,000.

A cheeky bet on an unlikely

first try scorer also scored big for one gambler.

Someone placed a $4500 on All Blacks hooker Codie Taylor to be the first try scorer at 26 to 1 odds.

When Taylor scooped up a low pass and dove over in the corner, the brave punter made a whopping return of $117,000.

Sport Hamilton snubs event Lewis Hamilton has risked incurring the wrath of Formula One’s owners, Liberty Media, after snubbing a major promotional event for the British Grand Prix at Trafalgar Square in favour of a two-day holiday. The timing by Hamilton was especially awkward on the day that Silverstone officials triggered a break clause to end their hosting of the race in 2019.

John Grant, chairman of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, hit out at a “crazy situation” that has allowed the country’s best-attended sporting event to become commercially unviable.

Finalists still up in air

The permutations around this weekend’s Watters Cup rugby action are simple, yet have the possibility of becoming quite confusing.

In the final week for teams to earn the right to compete for the infamous piece of Mid Canterbury rugby silverware, only one thing is certain.

It’s that Hampstead have finished their woeful season due to having the bye this week and also having no chance of making their way into the final – a situation Regan Broker will be most likely be both relieved and disappointed about.

That leaves Southern, Rakaia, Celtic and Methven all still in contention – although the latter

of the four will need a minor miracle if they are to force their way into the reckoning.

It would take a bonus point win against Rakaia at the Rakaia Domain to even bring them into contention, although a win without a bonus point, and Rakaia not gaining a point from the match, and a victory by Southern in their clash would see three teams sitting on the same number of points in second spot on the ladder, which would see the calculators coming out on Saturday evening.

There’s nothing in the form book that would suggest that Methven could beat Rakaia, although it does pay to remember that they were all over the Combined Competition runners-up when they met in that competi-

tion and in fact led them comfortably at halftime through an outstanding 40 minutes of rugby.

Rakaia, who suffered a shock defeat to Celtic early in the Watters Cup competition, have been chasing their tails ever since and won’t want to leave anything out on the paddock this weekend as they look to earn the right to contest the title they shared with Southern last year.

Wayne Foxcroft and Sean Carter have, thus far, managed to get their men up for the big clashes and will have to do so once again on Saturday afternoon.

In one of the easier scenarios to work out ahead of the weekend, Saturday’s other match will see the winner advance straight into the final.

Southern, who currently sit

one point clear of the pack on the standings are in the box seat and will be expecting to step out onto the paddock and produce a big effort in what will be the 200th appearance for club stalwart and former Mid Canterbury captain, Jon Dampney.

While disappointed to lose last week in a close encounter with Rakaia, Michael Ellis will have taken plenty of heart out of the fact his side really pushed the competition favourites.

On the other side of the coin, Shane Enright will be asking for a big push from his young side in the do-or-die battle. Celtic have proven to be the under rated team of the competition and on their day, as they showed when they beat Rakaia, anything is possible from the green machine.
