A Methven woman onboard a flight that was forced to request an emergency landing, has spoken of the moment passengers erupted into applause upon its safe arrival into Hong Kong. Etihad Airways Flight EY833 left Hong Kong at 6.47pm local time Wednesday, on its way to Abu Dhabi, when it asked for emergency landing services to be placed on standby due to a technical issue. The flight circled for more than four hours before returning to Hong Kong International Airport. Megan Watene was flying with colleagues, Jackie Floris, from Christchurch, and Jo Reeder, from Hamilton, to
attend the annual international ENJO conference in Abu Dhabi. She told the Ashburton Guardian, passengers noticed something wasn’t right straight after take-off. “Once in the air it was turbulent and it was obvious we weren’t gaining altitude as fast as you would expect,” she said. “Everyone was very quiet. For a full flight, you could hear a pin drop. You could sense everyone knew something was not right. Cabin crew remained seated also and only spoke when instructing passengers to sit down. No-one was able to get up, not even for the toilet. “There was no on-screen entertainment available either, which meant we were forced to see the flight map and statistics on all screens. This showed
us circling about 100km off the coast of Hong Kong, at a low altitude.” After an hour, Watene said the pilot announced they were experiencing technical difficulties and had requested a return to Hong Kong. Another hour passed and they were informed they needed to burn fuel to lose enough weight to land safely, and that this process could take three more hours. She could not praise the Etihad Airways’ staff enough, saying they were kept well informed and followed procedures professionally.
