Members of the Ashburton District Road Safety co-ordinating committee have questioned the Government’s decision to fund lights at an intersection in Tinwald, While the funding deal was greeted positively when announced last month, committee members are asking whether the project would be completed with any urgency and they also querying whether there was a better location than at the Lagmhor Road intersection with State Highway 1 identified. The lights were part of a multi-billion dollar infrastructure roading upgrade package and the Government indicated funding would be given for lights to be installed at the intersection Archibald Street (State Highway 1) and Lagmhor and Agnes Street. However, a number of members of

the road safety committee suggested a more appropriate place for the lights would be at the intersection of Archibald Street and Grahams Road. Canterbury and West Coast Automobile Association council member John Skevington said the intersection in question was very complicated and that lights at Grahams Road would be a much simpler option. “With Sims (Bakery) on one side and businesses on the other side making visibility difficult and more traffic coming up from Lake Hood it seems like a better option,” he said. Ashburton District Council group service delivery manager Neil McCann told the meeting that the plan for lights at the Lagmhor Road site had to be put

aside due to the level of work required to install signals at the intersection and that he had been surprised that the site had been chosen when the funding was announced. While discussion around the table indicated pessimism that the project would take many years to complete, McCann said the Government had shown a sense of urgency to get these projects moving, hence why they had chosen projects that could be considered ready to go, like this one at the installation of traffic lights at the West Street, Walnut Avenue intersection.
