A fire call-out on Monday created a slice of history for the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The call, around 7.30pm, was to a tractor that had caught on fire and among those in attendance from the brigade were all five of their female firefighters, the first time all five have attended a call-out together.

The chance of all five attending the fire was high considering it was a training night for the brigade and Rakaia chief fire officer Tyrone Burrowes said it acted as the perfect addition to the training session.

“It was a training night for us, so it was a pretty quick response and it was some good training for us for getting in to hay stacks.”

“It was a tractor that had

caught fire and a bit of stubble around it, it was not too bad, but it could have been a lot worse given the wind,” he said.

continues to grow.

One of the five is set to celebrate their 15th year in the unit while the other four are relative newcomers.

“They are all part of the team now, and they do just as good a job as the men,” he said.

“We could always do with more, especially anyone that would be available during the day.”

Aid mission snowballs

It initially started as a couple of Cantabrians wanting to help out farmers doing it tough in the Nelson fires, but now the Nelson Fires Hay Convoy group are looking at sending more than 10 truck-loads of feed north this week.

Baz Hill along with Paule Crawford from Geraldine set up a Facebook page after Crawford heard about feed shortages from a friend who was evacuated due to the fires.

Looking for a way to help out, the pair decided to send feed up to help feed the animals that were being kept at the Nelson A&P Showgrounds and for people to use once they returned to their properties.

“We were hoping we would be taking up one truck and trailer load of hay and feed but we had one go up on Monday and we have plans for 11 more to go up on Friday,” he said.

“It has really taken off.

“We set up the Facebook page at 4pm on Saturday and we were getting messages (on Sunday) from 6am to midnight offering support.”

The messages have not only flooded in from around the wider Canterbury district, but from around all of New Zealand.

Several truck drivers from the North Island have offered their services to the convoy, while feed from as far south as Palmerston has been offered for collection.

“The response has been overwhelming really,” he said.

“We haven’t had to approach anyone for anything, it has all been offered.”

The group have put taking donations of feed on hold for now,

The biggest issue still facing the convoy is running costs.

Hill says they estimated the cost per truck to be about $2000, including diesel and the road user charges associated with that. He

and another driver are donating $500 each towards fuel, alongside another $500 from Allied Petroleum, and a bank account is being set up if people wish to make donations, with any extra potential funds to be donated to the Nelson Firefighters Fund.

“A lot of these truck drivers and

the companies are doing it out of their own pocket and it is a big financial effort so we are very, very grateful,” Crawford said.

The distribution of the feed will be arranged by Federated Farmers in Nelson, and the Protranz yard in Christchurch will serve as a depot for the operation.

A person was transported to Christchurch Hospital yesterday in a serious condition after being attacked by a bull.

St John ambulance staff were first alerted to the incident at about 9.32am and responded with two ambulances and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter from Christchurch.

A WorkSafe spokeswoman confirmed they have been notified of the incident where a person was injured by livestock and that they are making enquiries in to the incident.

It was a busy day for other emergency services as well, with Ashburton firefighters responding to reports of a baler on fire on Tinwald Westerfield Mayfield Road yesterday afternoon. The fire was contained to the rear of the machine and did not spread to any surrounding land, said a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman.

Methven firefighters were also kept busy in the afternoon responding to two car crashes that occurred within five kilometres of each other on Thompsons Track.

The first, which occurred at 2.26pm was attended by firefighters from Methven and Lauriston, while the second, at 2.42pm, was responded to by units from Methven and Ashburton.

A St John spokesman confirmed there were no injuries and no transport required as a result of either crash.

There are plenty of smoke plumes on the horizon as rural farmers burn off stubble after the summer harvest.

The catastrophic fires in Tasman have been a reminder of how things can go wrong quickly and have members of the community on edge that the dry region is susceptible.

The message from FENZ remains the same, if in doubt call 111.

“The volunteer fire brigades don’t actually mind going to the calls, it’s their job,” Canterbury principal rural fire officer Bruce Janes said.

However, now that FENZ has taken control of the fire permit process – Canterbury is in a restricted fire season which requires a permit for any fire – there are steps in place to lower the number of false alarm callouts.

Janes said that as part of the permit process, farmers are being advised to ring the FENZ Southern Communications Centre when they are commencing a burn-off so that if a call comes in reporting it as a fire (from someone other than the permit holder) it can avoid an unnecessary call-out.

“If the farmer is ringing us with the address of the burn and we get a call to that road reporting a fire, we can intercept a modest number of the calls.

“When the caller is not so sure of the address, we err on the side of caution and let the volunteer crews go for a look.

“The crews don’t mind. They get there, check the permit details and head home.”

It was better to be safe than sorry, Janes said and the message to the public was that people need to call it in when they per-

ceive danger.

“Farmers need to burn the stubble, it’s all permitted, and they have an 18-point plan they have to follow, but elsewhere people see a big plume of smoke all of a sudden, instinct kicks in and everybody gets a big fright so they call it in.”

“If the farmers don’t do the burns, we have paddocks of stubble right up to the fence which equates to continuous fuel from between road-side, paddock and beyond.

“It is probably riskier to us unburnt.

“So we want them burnt off but done safely.”

There appeared to be a misconception from some members of the public that a Restricted Fire Season was a total fire ban, however, restricted season means fire by permit only under restrictions.

Permits are issued by experienced Rural Fire Officers, who take in to account the weather, the on ground conditions, the area surrounding the proposed fire and other factors.

The permit is issued to the owner who must follow strict safety precautions set out in the permit.

If weather conditions deteriorate the Rural Fire Officer can cancel or postpone the permit.

A total fire ban comes in a prohibited season which, if the weather remains hot and dry, Janes said could be enforced on Saturday.

“All things being equal we would have gone prohibited last Saturday, but we are expecting rain Thursday and possibly Saturday”.

The heightened public awareness from the ongoing situation in Tasman could see the weight of public pressure force further restrictions across Canterbury whether it rains or not.

Actor and singer Sharleyne Diamond has played many a lead role, but nothing quite like the one she is preparing for now.

The Timaru mum-of-two will star in Variety Theatre Ashburton’s Sister Act as the sassy and irrepressible Deloris Van Cartier.

“It’s a huge part, it’s going to put me through my acting chops that’s for sure,” Diamond said.

“It’s a really challenging vocal role for a singer, and I like a challenge.”

Diamond initially turned down the role when Variety approached her and asked her to do it.

“Because it’s such a big com-

mitment and it pushes me out of my comfort zone dramatically.”

But then she and husband Graeme talked about it, and decided it was the chance of a lifetime.

So she phoned Variety back, auditioned and got the part.

Rehearsals began at the weekend, and there is no looking back now as Diamond and her fellow cast members prepare for the May production.

Diamond’s whole life revolves around performing. She is a singing teacher, member of The Drama Queens trio, and lead singer of six-piece The Soul Agency, which opened for the Black Seeds and Katchafire at

Caroline Bay last month.

She played Matron Mama Morton in Chicago for the South Canterbury Drama League in 2009 and has been in several shows since with major parts.

“I have played lead roles before but nothing quite this size,” said Diamond of the Sister Act role.

Played by Whoopi Goldberg in the hit movie in 1992, Deloris is a wannabe disco diva who takes cover in a convent after witnessing her gangster boyfriend commit a murder.

Diamond said she was grateful to Temuka Transport which would be sponsoring her by covering fuel costs to and from Ashburton three times a week.

Welcome donation to boost students’ literacy skills Thanks to a contribution from the Erewhon Masonic Lodge, students from St Joseph’s School are going to have an extra helping hand when it comes learning English.

The lodge has donated two Quick 60 tool boxes to be used by reading recovery students, some of whom do not speak English as a first language.

Principal Cath Blacklow said the school was extremely pleased to accept the generous donation from Erewhon Masonic Lodge.

“The Quick 60 toolbox is an excellent resource for our English language learner students who need to build on their literacy knowledge and for students who need oneon-one intervention to accelerate their learning in reading,” she said.

The lodge has a long history of assisting primary schools with reading material, initially assisting Mt Somers School when the lodge was domiciled in the area, now focusing on Ashburton schools after their relocation to the town.

Master of the lodge Jeffrey Sostinto said previous efforts included two Books for Bikes projects and two summer reading programmes in conjunction with the public library.

Hakatere survey results released Hakatere hutholders and others who enjoy the Ashburton River mouth are being invited to a community meeting on Saturday to talk about the results of a survey commissioned to find out people’s visions and values for the area.

The survey will help Environment Canterbury develop a management strategy for the river mouth, which is used by anglers, bird-watchers, walkers and fourwheel drivers.

Saturday’s meeting will be at the Hakatere hutholders’ hall, starting at 1pm.

The river mouth and hut area is

a popular spot for locals and visitors and is also home to the endangered black-billed gulls and other braided river birds.

Over the years there have been many discussions between landowners, residents, interest groups and the wider community about the ecological, cultural and recreational values of the river mouth, and how to protect them.

The management strategy has involved gathering feedback via the user survey and an ecological survey.

During the summer holidays, ECan staff spent time at the river mouth talking with people about

how they interacted with the area and what they would like to happen with the river mouth in the future – 133 online surveys were also completed to provide further insights on how the river mouth is being used.

Janine Holland, ECan’s Ashburton Zone Delivery Lead, says the team relished the opportunity to find out people’s views first-hand.

“After receiving a wide variety of anecdotal feedback on the river mouth over the years it was great to talk directly with local people about their values and concerns for the area.

“The team really enjoyed hear-

ing about the many ways people interact with the river mouth from fishing to bird watching and walking to four-wheel driving.

“We’re excited to be able to take this feedback and use it for the basis of developing a strategy that will help enhance and protect natural values in the area for generations to come.”

Many survey respondents also said they enjoyed the general peace and quiet and feeling of wildness in the area. Access to the area was a key concern for many users with some concerned that access may be reduced, while others were concerned about the

impact, particularly of 4WDs and motorbikes, on wildlife.

Some of the challenges raised included maintaining and improving water quality and river levels, addressing coastal erosion, and the impact of commercial uses.

The ecological survey was conducted to identify and map the different native and exotic vegetation types that are present in the river mouth area. This work will be supplemented by existing information about the native birds nesting in the area and the predator control operation that is ongoing to protect these birds.

Young family wins $8m prize A West Auckland mum was woken by her partner using his “serious voice” and urging her to double check that the seven digits on his phone meant they had won $8 million in Lotto’s Powerball.

It was early Sunday morning and the young dad was checking his emails when he saw one from MyLotto saying he had won in Saturday night’s draw.

Still half asleep, he settled his baby and checked his Lotto ticket on the Lotto NZ App when the numbers flashed up.

He got more and more excited as each number was circled.

“When I saw $8,000,000 staring back at me, my heart started pounding. I jumped straight off the couch and ran into the bedroom where my partner was sleeping – my mind was buzzing.”

His partner was just as dazed.

“When he called my name, I could tell something was up straight away – he had his serious voice on,” the woman said.

“Everyone we’ve told has been so happy for us. We’ve got a young family so this really couldn’t have come at a better time – we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us.”

The first big purchase will be buying their first home. They also plan to give some of their winnings to their families and do some travelling.

“We’ve always wanted to go to Bora Bora as well, it’s crazy to think we can just do it now.”

Cadbury owner now shrinking Jet Planes and Wine Gums First Cadbury cut the size of its family chocolate block, now family favourites like Jet Planes are also getting the chop.

Following news that Cadbury would be dropping the size of its family chocolate block, it has now been revealed that lolly packets are also in for a chop.

Stuff reported yesterday that Pascall lolly packets, including Jet Planes, Wine Gums and Jubes have all been cut from 240g to 180g packets.

The Countdown online shopping service shows the new 180g packets for these products selling at $2.79.

The larger packet used to retail for $3.29.

Interestingly, the online images for Wine Gums and Jet Planes have not yet been updated on the website.

Both Pascall and Cadbury are owned by Mondelez.

Rohin Rosman, marketing director for Pascall, said in a statement: “In recent months, Pascall lovers have told us they’d prefer their favourite lollies to be available at a lower price, so we’ve reduced the recommended retail price and size to make a bag of Pascall lollies more affordable,” Rosman said.

“The changes mean Pascall bags are available at a recommended retail price Kiwis have told us they prefer, with some lollies having the same or lower recommended retail price per gram including Pineapple Lumps, Eskimos and Marshmallows, while others are slightly higher,” he said.

“While we do suggest a recommended retail price, we don’t set prices; these can vary by retailer and store.”

This follows a move in early February that saw the company announce the reduction of its standard dairy milk blocks from 200g to 180g.

Cadbury announced the change via a Facebook post that explained the company had decided to reduce the size of the blocks rather than increase the price.

The company said that the recipe would remain unchanged.

Earlier this year, the company also provoked Kiwi outrage – or perhaps heartbreak – in changing the design of its popular marshmallow eggs.

What was previously a whole chocolate marshmallow egg with flavouring on each side has now been cut down the middle with the treat to be sold as a half egg shape.

All in all, it’s been a bad start to the year for Kiwis with a sweet tooth.

Lines of communication still there A

s a media organisation we rely heavily on the time of other people to bring news to the district.

We are blessed in many senses because largely, people are more than willing to give their time to discuss something they are passionate about and use our platforms as a way of informing and promoting something that impacts on the district.

One of the organisations we do tend to lean on quite heavily is the Ashburton District Council.

Due to their role across so many facets of the community, it isn’t uncommon for there to be at least some form of communication between us and them on a daily basis as we bring their news and information to the ratepayers

and people within the Ashburton District.

It’s a usually harmonious relationship with good understanding of each other’s roles and for many years the luxury has extended to us being able to contact anyone within the council makeup directly on information relating to their particular field of expertise.

It has allowed us to go straight to the horse’s mouth, so to speak, and get the information from

someone who is out there dealing with it hands-on.

So, having enjoyed that privilege for so long, it was very concerning to us late last year when this new communications policy was first whispered about.

That accessibility that had made our job so easy when it came to gathering information was to be yanked away in one foul swoop.

Suffice to say, we had some concerns.

Just how diluted was the information coming to us now going to be if it was coming from a higher level? Would we lose that real passion that came through from speaking to someone at the very coal face of a situation? And should we be concerned about Ashburton District Council effec-

tively moving to place a gag on the information coming from within their business?

We took those concerns to chief executive Hamish Riach and he kindly took the time to explain that the new policy was not being put in place to muzzle the council, but more to ensure that the information coming out of the building was correct and factual and sat in line with the council’s overall standing on a subject.

This policy has been in place in terms of our access to staff members at the council for a wee while now and it’s hard to measure just how much we’re gaining and losing by its presence.

Little bits of news gold that used to creep through every now and then are presumably being

lost somewhere in the abyss, but overall the agreement seems to be working.

We can still ask all the same questions, but just not to the same people that we have been for years. Instead they are now directed to those sitting in the leadership roles within the council and to Riach himself.

It’s not ideal, but it is workable.

Should it become untenable, then you can be certain we’ll have plenty to say about the matter.

But, most importantly, our restrictions don’t extend to the mayor and her councillors.

Which, in an election year, will ensure the battle for spots around the table come October should make for some very interesting reading.

The joy of trying something new T

his year, I have decided, is going to be the year to be more conscious of the life I want to create.

This year heralds a change of career for me (or rather a hanging up of one set of boots to spend more time wearing the other).

There must be something in the water, because the collective atmosphere of my friends is one of change, growth and choice.

It could be our age, and a sense of our own mortality, but it feels more like we have just had enough of being pulled in a million different directions and we are so very ready to be a little truer to ourselves and our values.

We want to be more present and stop running from point A to B in a caffeinated haze.

We want to have time with our families, and to do the things we always wanted to do; things that are constantly pushed into a far corner to gather cobwebs under a burden of over-commitment and misguided perfectionism.

In effect, we are Marie Kondo-ing our lives.

Being intentional is what it’s all about, a lofty ambition when life is so manic, which I imagine is why the word has been positively done to death lately.

In the spirit of all this, and dusting off lists of long forgotten

every time we do or learn something different.

So, with our shiny new mini Mal, soft boards tied precariously to the top of my husband’s trusty Hilux, we set off for Nelson.

With some help from Holgeys Surf shop, we found an instructor who was willing to teach my daughter and I. At this point, all I knew about this person was his name was Mark, and I sincerely hoped he wasn’t an impatient millennial who would snigger every time forty-year-old me fell off my board (which I was pretty sure would be a lot).

After a message from Mark saying that his lessons “end up with everyone surfing until they can’t talk or walk” and (more reassuringly but also with a fair dose of humour) “it’s easy to surf, you just have to stand up!!!”, we scheduled to meet at Rabbit Island, where the waves were big enough to surf but not too scary for learners.

Mark turned out to be around my age, with a cheerful Aussie twang from an earlier life in Tasmania and a super-human level of patience.

If I fell off, he kindly blamed the wave (and I did fall off a lot – I have the bruises to prove it) and gave me feedback on what I could do better next time.

My daughter had one surf lesson through school, and loved it, so I thought having a lesson together while we were on holiday in Nelson would be fun, and a great chance for some bonding too.

Besides, learning new things is scientifically proven to be excellent for keeping our grey matter in check and creating new neural pathways (little highways for messages to be transmitted in your brain).

The more new things you learn, the easier it becomes, and the more you practice those things, the stronger those pathways become, hence – practice makes perfect.

Studies have shown that learning new skills even reduces your risk of developing dementia, and it makes us feel good too.

New experiences and skills cause the brain to release dopamine, the reward chemical, so we get a burst of happiness

With my daughter, he was patient and fun, making her laugh, and sympathetic when she fell off or felt frustrated.

He was the perfect instructor, and even though it was for a split second, I did get up on the board, and so did my daughter.

We came away exhilarated, tired and happy.

So here is to crafting the life you want, living more intentionally and trying new things.

Syrian Isis stronghold hit US-led coalition warplanes have struck Islamic State’s last stronghold in eastern Syria and hundreds of civilians fled the besieged enclave as US-backed fighters pressed their campaign to seize it.

Coalition jets roared overhead as columns of white smoke rose from the Islamic State-held Baghouz area a short distance from the Iraqi border, a Reuters witness said.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which have driven Islamic State from swathes of northern and eastern Syria with US-led coalition support, launched an offensive on Saturday to capture the enclave in Deir al-Zor province.

The jihadists are putting up stiff resistance and had sought to counter-attack again, according to Mustafa Bali, head of the SDF media office.

Around 1500 civilians had fled the enclave, he added.

SDF combatants watched as a column of at least 17 trucks filled with men, women and children left Baghouz and headed into SDF-held territory.

Some of those fleeing identified themselves as Iraqis.

“It seems there are still many civilians inside Baghouz,” Bali said.

“We are compelled to go cautiously and accurately in this battle.”

On the outskirts of Baghouz, the people who had left stood in lines to be questioned by coalition and SDF forces apparently trying to identify whether any were jihadists.

Ahead of launching the attack, the SDF said more than 20,000 civilians had left Baghouz in the preceeding 10 days.

The SDF believes 400 to 600 jihadists may be holed up there, including foreigners and other hardened militants.

The SDF, which is spearheaded by the Kurdish YPG militia, advanced southwards into Deir al-Zor province after capturing Raqqa.

To the west of the Euphrates, in territory otherwise held by the Syrian government and its allies, Islamic State retains a foothold in mountainous terrain.

cember he was pulling all 2000 US troops out of Syria, saying the battle against Islamic State there was almost won.

The top US commander overseeing American forces in the Middle East said that the United States is likely just weeks away from starting the withdrawal.

Islamic State is still widely seen as a threat, however.

A top US general said last week the Islamic State would be an enduring menace following the US withdrawal, as it retained leaders, fighters, facilitators and resources that would fuel further insurgency.

US warns allies about Huawei use Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has warned US allies against deploying equipment from Chinese telecoms gear manufacturer Huawei on their soil, saying it would make it more difficult for Washington to “partner alongside them”.

“We want to make sure we identify (to) them the opportunities and the risks of using that equipment,” Pompeo told reporters on Monday during a visit to the Hungarian capital, Budapest.

Hungary is the first stop in Pompeo’s trip to central Europe that also includes Slovakia and Poland, part of an effort to make up for a lack of US engagement in the region that opened the door to more Chinese and Russian influence, administration officials say.

Washington is concerned about China’s growing presence, in particular the expansion of Huawei Technologies, the world’s biggest maker of telecoms equipment, in Hungary and Poland.

The US and its Western allies believe

Huawei’s gear could be used for espionage, and see its expansion into central Europe as a way to gain a foothold in the EU market.

Huawei denies engaging in intelligence work for any government. It says its technologies serve 70 per cent of Hungarians and that it co-operates with most telecoms providers in Hungary, including state-owned enterprises.

“We have seen this all around the world, it also makes it more difficult for America to be present,” Pompeo said.

“If that equipment is co-located where we have important American systems, it makes it more difficult for us to partner alongside them.”

Pompeo announced plans for a defence co-operation agreement with Hungary, one of the most enthusiastic European governments about Chinese investment.

But he said he had discussed “the dangers of allowing China to gain a bridgehead in Hungary” in talks with Foreign

Minister Peter Szijjarto.

Budapest’s nationalist government, largely isolated politically in the European Union, hopes to buy mid-range air defence capabilities from the United States.

In Poland, where Pompeo is travelling to this week, the government is considering banning Huawei from participating in the development of 5G capabilities after arresting a Chinese employee of Huawei and a former Polish security official on spying allegations last month.

Both men have denied wrongdoing.

Pompeo’s tour includes a conference on the Middle East, hosted by Poland, where Washington hopes to build a coalition against Iran.

He is also expected to voice concerns about energy ties with Moscow, and urge Hungary not to support the TurkStream pipeline, part of the Kremlin’s plans to bypass Ukraine, the main transit route for Russian gas to Europe.

Ozzy Osbourne is reportedly in intensive care due to concerns over his health.

The 70-year-old Black Sabbath rocker is at risk of developing pneumonia. Last week the heavy metal star was admitted to hospital after suffering complications from the flu, wife Sharon said. Sharon, 66, tweeted: “As some of you may have heard, Ozzy was admitted to hospital following some complications from the flu”. The Black Sabbath vocalist and Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductee was forced to postpone the UK and European legs of his No More Tours 2 tour after taking advice from doctors.

Counterpart cancelled Starz has cancelled Counterpart, starring JK Simmons, after two seasons, a rep for the cable channel confirmed for TheWrap. Creator and executive producer Justin Marks tweeted out news of his show’s cancellation. Marks is hopeful studio MRC finds a new home for the series. He began: “Hey #counterpart fans, a bit of sad news … Starz has decided not to pick up our show for a 3rd season …”

Marks continued: “It’s been an absolute dream for this team … we got to make EXACTLY the show we wanted to … perfect cast, perfect crew on 2 continents … and we’re so grateful to our network for the time we had”.

Australia footballer released from Thai jail Refugee footballer Hakeem al-Araibi is back in Australia after being released from detention in Thailand.

Al-Araibi was on a Thai Airways flight that touched down in Melbourne yesterday, where his wife was waiting for him.

After two months in a Bangkok prison the Bahraini refugee was released on Monday afternoon, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirming the news.

The 25-year-old was seen chatting happily before boarding the flight.

An official from the Thai attorney general’s office, Chatchom Akapin, said Bahrain had requested the case be dropped after it had sought his extradition.

Al-Araibi was wanted by Bahrain after fleeing the country when he was charged with vandalising a police station in 2012.

He was sentenced to 10 years in jail in absentia.

The Thai Foreign Ministry later declined to give details of why Bahrain asked for the case to be dropped. However, Bahrain state media reported that Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa had spoken on the phone with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

But after al-Araibi’s release, Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement the 10year jail sentence remained in place and reaffirmed the country’s right to “pursue all necessary legal actions against him”.

Morrison thanked Thailand for releasing al-Araibi after intense lobbying from the Australian government, global human rights groups, sporting bodies and the public.

Al-Araibi was detained at Bangkok airport on November 27 when he arrived in Thailand for his honeymoon with his wife.

The arrest was made after Bahrain issued an Interpol Red Notice for his detention on November 7. Australia came under fire for passing on the notice to Thai authorities before his arrival.

He had faced at least another two months in jail after a court in Bangkok last week set down his pre-trial extradition hearing for April 22.

Al-Araibi fled Bahrain in 2014 and was granted refugee status by Australia where he plays soccer for semi-professional Melbourne club Pascoe Vale.

Football Federation Australia thanked the Australian and Thai governments.

Log volumes, which reached a record 671,000 tonnes last year, are similar to last season but shipments to India have slowed, he said.

“Volumes have also been impacted by poor ground conditions in certain areas within Southland affecting the ability of logging crews to harvest their forestry blocks,” Gear said. “These two factors are expected to lead to a reduction in throughput by yearend of approximately 10 per cent compared with last season.”

New Zealanders racked up more on their credit cards in January with increased purchases of durable goods and big-ticket items.

Core retail spending on credit and debit cards rose a seasonally adjusted 2.2 per cent in January, reversing the 1.7 per cent decline reported in December, Statistics New Zealand said.

Including petrol and vehicle-related spending, purchases were up 1.8 per cent.

That was led by a 5.1 per cent lift in spending on durable goods, such as hardware, appliances, and furniture. Spending was up across all categories except fuel, which was down 0.5 per cent in the month.

“Spending in the durables in-

dustry bounced back from the December 2018 month,” retail statistics manager Sue Chapman said in a statement.

“A lag in processing of transactions may have contributed to the December and January movements.”

A number of retailers have given a fairly subdued assessment of the Christmas-New Year trading period, which is one of their most important sales periods. That is despite consumer confidence surveys remaining upbeat with people stating their willingness to buy big-ticket items such as furniture and whiteware.

Yesterday’s data also shows more of those purchases were made on credit. Just over 54 per cent of Jan-

uary’s transactions made on credit cards, the highest proportion since Stats NZ started tracking the breakdown in 2002.

Calendar 2018 was also the first time credit card transactions were a bigger proportion of transactions than debit cards.

Yesterday’s card spending data show total retail purchases rose $5.52 billion in January, up 3.5 per cent from a year earlier. Spending on durable goods was up 6.2 per cent from a year earlier at $1.28 billion, while consumables rose 5 per cent to $2.04 billion.

Including services and non-retail industries, spending on electronic cards increased 4 per cent in January to $7.33 billion from a year earlier.

Inflation expectations ease Business managers and finance professionals trimmed their inflation expectations in the latest Reserve Bank survey, at a time when traders are pricing in a growing chance of lower interest rates.

Respondents to the central bank’s quarterly survey predict consumer price inflation of 1.82 per cent a year from now, down from the 2.09 per cent rate expected in the December survey. Two-year expectations were for inflation of 2.02 per cent, down 1 basis point (0.01 per cent) from the previous survey.

A net 68.3 per cent of firms believe current monetary conditions are easier than neutral, compared to a net 63.8 per cent in December. “Easier than neutral” indicates rates which are low enough to stoke growth. Meanwhile, a net 75.6 per cent of respondents predict easier

conditions in a year’s time, up from 52.2 per cent three months ago.

The Reserve Bank will release its first monetary policy statement of the year today.

Governor Adrian Orr is expected to keep the official cash rate at a record low 1.75 per cent, although traders will be closely watching his tone and language, given US and Australian central bankers have indicated policies of lower rates for longer. Traders are pricing in a 42 per cent chance of a rate cut by June and a 100 per cent chance over the next 12 months.

The survey’s respondents trimmed their outlook for economic growth, predicting GDP to respectively rise at an annual rate of 2.38 per cent and 2.36 per cent one and two years ahead. They had previously expected annual GDP growth

of 2.44 per cent on both horizons.

The unemployment rate is seen at 4.17 per cent in a year’s time and 4.27 per cent in two years. Statistics New Zealand figures last week showed the rate at 4.3 per cent in December. It was released after the RBNZ survey was conducted January 23-24.

Respondents expected wages to rise 2.9 per cent over the coming year and 2.86 per cent in two years, down from 2.92 per cent and 3.04 per cent respectively in the December survey.

Expectations of house price inflation also eased, with respondents predicting prices to rise 1.91 per cent in the coming year, and 2.14 per cent over the next two years.

They’d previously predicted increases of 2.86 per cent and 2.31 per cent respectively.

earnings should fall in the range of $8.60 million to $8.90 million,” chair Rex Chapman said yesterday.

The company will pay a 7.5 cent interim dividend on March 6, unchanged from a year earlier.

A full-year result within the forecast range will see total dividends for the year kept at 26 cents, consistent with the past three years, Chapman said.

“Based on all known factors at the date of its 2019 interim result, South Port estimates full-year

ceeded a million tonnes last year, and became the largest contributor to the port’s volumes and profitability for the first time.

Gear said the 13,500 square-metre paved log storage area on the Island Harbour has been operating for nine months, improving utilisation and safety.

Container volumes in the period were about 10 per cent higher than a year earlier, while expectations of dry conditions had seen an additional 22,000 tonnes of stock feed imported in the period.

Fertiliser volumes, down 34,000 tonnes from a year earlier, should be only slightly down by year-end, the company said.

Meat, fish and dairy volumes handled and packed in the firm’s cold stores increased during the period, Gear said. New exports of containerised medium density fibreboard, handled and packed in the intermodal freight centre in Invercargill, also contributed to the result, the company said.

Gear said the centre, established three years ago and served by rail, is now taking about 7000 trucks off the region’s roads annually.

South Port shares ended Monday at $6.50, up 8.2 per cent in the past year.

South Port says it will work with New Zealand Aluminium Smelters this year to see if it can provide additional services for the extra production expected from Tiwai Point.

The aluminium smelter is Bluff port’s biggest customer, accounting for about a third of all its cargo last year. In December the plant formally re-opened its fourth pot line after a six-year break.

South Port chief executive Nigel Gear says that new capacity should increase the smelter’s use of imported alumina by about 60,000 tonnes a year, and its exports of aluminium by about 30,000 tonnes.

“Over the coming year, South Port will be working with NZAS to determine whether there are additional services the port can provide to handle and/or pack any of this finished cargo into containers for export through Bluff,” he said.

South Port yesterday reported a 1 per cent increase in first-half cargo to 1.77 million tonnes. Revenue for the six months ended December 31 climbed 7.4 per cent to $20.9 million, benefiting from a good mix of cargo but also aided by a strong performance from the firm’s warehousing division and increased marine activity.

Quiches – simply good Take a few eggs, some pastry (home made or bought) and whatever is in your fridge or pantry and you have the makings of a quiche, open pie, flan or savoury slice.

With a salad any of those can make a tasty and filling meal, they can be cut into slices for lunch boxes or work place lunches and they’re just as good eaten hot or cold.

Mushroom and spinach quiche

No-fail quiche

Classic quiche

125g ham, chopped 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 1/2 C (180g) grated cheese 1/3 C (50g) self-raising flour Salt and freshly ground pepper, to season 4 eggs 1 1/2 C (375ml) milk Chopped parsley Sliced tomato

1 sheet of frozen shortcrust pastry 6 x size 6 or 7 eggs 1/2 C grated cheese 1 C diced cooked vegetables (peas, beans, carrots, corn) 1/2 C diced cooked chicken, bacon, ham or chorizo sausage 1 C milk Salt and pepper to taste Fresh herbs for garnish

■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Grease a 6 cup quiche dish ■ Combine ham, onion, cheese, flour, salt and pepper and parsley in a medium bowl.

■ Scatter over base of dish ■ Top with sliced tomato.

■ Whisk eggs and milk together in a large jug and pour over mixture.

■ Cook 30- 40 minutes or until puffed and golden.

■ Serve warm or cold.

■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Sprinkle cooked vegetables and chicken (or bacon, ham or chorizo sausage) into the pie shell.

■ In a bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, cheese and seasoning.

■ Pour over filling.

■ Bake for 30-40 minutes in the preheated oven.

■ Let rest for 5 minutes before slicing, garnish with chopped herbs.

Corn and chicken quiche 2 sheets shortcrust pastry 1/2 rotisserie chicken, shredded 125gm can corn, drained 3 spring onions, thinly sliced, plus extra to serve 1/4 C torn basil leaves, plus extra small leaves to serve 8 eggs 1/2 C milk 1/2 C thickened cream 1/2 C grated cheddar cheese ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Line the base and sides of a 4cm-deep, 24cm loose-based fluted flan pan with pastry, trimming to fit.

■ Bake blind for 10 minutes until golden.

■ Remove blind filling.

■ Bake for a further 10 minutes, then reduce oven to 180°C. ■ Arrange chicken, corn, onion and basil in pastry case.

■ In a jug, lightly whisk eggs, milk, cream and half the cheese until combined. Season.

■ Pour over chicken mixture and sprinkle with remaining cheese.

■ Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden and just set.

■ Serve with extra spring onion and basil.

Creamy salmon and spinach quiche

2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed 1T vegetable or olive oil 2 spring onions, thinly sliced 250g white button mushrooms, thickly sliced 1 clove garlic, crushed 100g baby spinach leaves 6 eggs 1 /3 C cream 50g feta, crumbled

2 sheets savoury short pastry 1 medium onion, finely chopped 300g bag spinach, tough stems removed and roughly chopped 5 eggs 500ml cream 200g hot smoked salmon, flaked 1/2 C grated parmesan cheese 2t dried dill Freshly ground black pepper and a little salt

■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Grease a 26x16cm slice pan.

■ Line pan with pastry sheets, trimming to fit.

■ Using a fork, prick base all over.

■ Line pastry with baking paper ■ Cover base with rice or pie weights.

■ Bake for 8 minutes or until just golden. Remove weights and paper. Cool.

■ Heat oil in a frying pan over high heat.

■ Add spring onions, mushrooms and garlic.

■ Cook, stirring for 5 minutes or until soft.

■ Remove pan from heat. Add spinach and stir until wilted.

■ Spoon spinach mixture evenly over pastry in pan.

■ Whisk eggs and cream in a jug. Season.

■ Pour over spinach mixture.

■ Sprinkle with feta.

■ Bake for 12 minutes, or until browned and just set.

■ Let stand in pan for 5 minutes.

■ Serve.

■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■ Line a 26cm tart/quiche pan with pastry and bake blind for 15 minutes.

■ Remove the blind weights and cook a further 5 minutes until a light biscuit colour.

■ Gently cook the onion in a frying pan with a film of oil until tender.

■ Add the spinach to the pan and cook until wilted and excess water has been evaporated.

■ Whisk the eggs and cream together in a bowl until combined.

■ Arrange the onion and spinach mixture over the pastry base.

■ Distribute the salmon through the dish.

■ Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and dill.

■ Season with pepper and a little salt.

■ Pour over the egg mixture and then bake in the lower part of the oven for 30-40 minutes.

■ Remove from the oven while there is still a slight wobble in the filling in the centre.

■ Serve warm or at room temperature.

Sweet and sour pork 500g NZ pork shoulder cut into 2cm cubes 1t salt 1/4 t white sugar 1t soy sauce 1 egg white 2 green onions, finely sliced 1/2 C cornflour Sauce 1T vegetable oil 3 celery stalks, sliced 1 green pepper, cubed 1 red onion, cut into wedges 1C water 1/4 t salt 3/4 C white sugar 1/3 C apple cider vinegar 1/4 C ketchup 1/2 t soy sauce Juice and contents 1 can pineapple chunks (225g) To fry 3C vegetable oil To thicken 2T cornstarch 1/4 C water

■ Place cubed pork in a medium bowl and season with salt, sugar and soy sauce before mixing in egg whites and green onions.

■ Cover and place in the fridge for 1 hour.

■ In a large deep pan or deep-fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 185°C. ■ Remove the pork from the fridge and coat in cornflour.

■ Fry the pork in the hot oil for about 10 minutes – until evenly browned.

■ Drain pork on paper towel and set aside.

■ In a wok over medium heat, heat a little oil and stir in celery, pepper and onion. Cook until the vegetables are tender then remove from heat and set aside.

■ To make the sauce, mix the water, salt, sugar, apple cider vinegar, ketchup and soy sauce in a large saucepan over high heat.

Bring to the boil then stir in the cooked pork, vegetable mixture

■ Bring sauce to a boil before stirring in cornflour and water mixture to thicken.

■ Cook for a further 5-10 minutes until shiny and thick.

■ Serve with steamed rice.

Back to the future for petanque Petanque in the park made a return to Ashburton on Sunday, when the Ashburton MSA Petanque Club headed to the Ashburton Domain and invited members of the public to join them. Members of the MSA Petanque Club, which was now based on Racecourse Road next to the MSA Bowling Club, put their sport on show with a game on the shingle paths through the domain, which were fortunately bathed in shade on what was a hot day. It was a bit of a return to its roots for petanque in Ashburton, with the paths through the domain being where it all started back in 2012 when the then Ashburton Petanque Club was formed.

Penske asks for patience DJR Team Penske are pleading for patience from fans before testing and the Supercars season opener at Adelaide later this month where they’ll debut their Ford Mustang.

The two-door coupe was unveiled to much fanfare and mixed reviews on Monday in Melbourne.

That much was inevitable after the demise of the much-loved Falcon, which Scott McLaughlin steered to a Supercars triumph last season.

Team Penske are confident of holding off powerhouses Red Bull Holden Racing Team to more silverware in 2019; but not in Adelaide.

The season-opening event at the end of February will see the Mustang’s debut and there’s a gulf between what McLaughlin wants to achieve and what might be possible.

“It’s definitely going to take a little bit of time to get our head around a few things,” he said.

“Hopefully we can get to the front sooner rather than later.

“But we’ve got to be realistic about a few things, we just have to work hard behind the scenes and make sure that we’re on top of it.

“We go there making the best of the situation we have.”

Many eyes will be on testing later this week on Phillip Island

Scott McLaughlin when McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard will put their cars through their paces under closeto-race conditions for the first time.

Team director Ryan Story agreed that a race win for either driver might just be a bridge too far in the early stage of the season.

“I’d never rule it out but you have to be realistic in terms of where we are and what we’re up against,” he said.

“It’s a new car. It’s a two-door car going from a four-door shape (so) we have realistic expectations heading into Adelaide.

Back to the well once more

S

itting at home on Friday night, I was catching up on some Coronation Street when I received an SOS. When I looked at my cellphone to see who was calling me at 9.30pm and saw it was a fellow tennis player, and I knew straight away exactly what it was about.

A Saturday tennis team was light on numbers and team members had been wracking their brains trying to come up with someone who might be able to fill in for them at the last minute – someone came up with me.

I was already set to play on Sunday too, for the Mid Canterbury seniors in their rep match against Canterbury Town, so even though it had been a very long time between A grade drinks for me I figured, why not?

I might as well just make a weekend of it.

I knew that my dad had also received an SOS from another team and figured if he could make a return to A grade tennis after a gap of about 12 years at 60 years of age, and back it up with a seniors game the next day, surely I could do the same at 35 years old and after a 10-year gap.

So after first checking that I would not be playing against my dad (as that would not go well for me) I said yes, and while most sensible people were seeking out shade and finding various ways to cool off as temperatures soared across Mid Canterbury at the weekend, I was doing the opposite.

Absolutely covered from head to toe in SPF 50+, I spent Saturday and Sunday afternoon running around a tennis court, and by golly it was hard work.

Over the past few years my tennis playing had been largely limited to social tennis, which was generally doubles, and I liked it that way.

I liked the fact that there was someone else on the court to share the ground-covering duties (and yap to), and the fact that social tennis competitions generally ran in the evenings when it was cool and pleasant.

Playing A grade meant playing singles, and it had been a long time since I’d played singles.

Other than one appearance filling in for a fast fours team one night, I don’t think I had played a proper game of singles since

the last time I’d played A grade tennis, and according to Guardian archives that was 10 years ago in 2009.

With a bit of a crook knee, I wasn’t really sure how I’d come through anything too strenuous, which was probably why I’d limited myself to doubles in recent years.

But the knee had been ok so far this season and I had actually just said to my husband on Friday, knowing that A grade teams were a bit on the short side post-Christmas as was often the case, that if someone asked me I’d probably give it a shot.

Someone from the Hampstead team must have read my mind.

It wasn’t my best weekend ever on the tennis court.

I played like rubbish and of the three doubles games and one

singles game I played, I only won one match, and incredibly it was the singles.

I played a lovely young guy called John, and somehow I got the win, but more importantly, I survived.

And so did dad.

In fact, he did far better than me. The only match of the four that he lost, was the mixed doubles he played in with me on Sunday!

I was asked by a couple of people after Saturday’s games if I’d had fun.

Had it been a few degrees cooler, I think it would have been fun. But I’m the kind of person who dislikes those hot, hot days even when I’m sitting at home doing nothing, so I could not have picked a worse weekend to make a comeback.

But, I did it, and now I know I can do it.

Whether I’d go back for another shot, who knows.

But, if I did get asked back to play A grade again one thing was for sure, I’d be enforcing a heat policy like they do in Melbourne and checking the weather forecast before I answer!

In brief Lampard in the frame Frank Lampard has played down reports suggesting he is a contender to succeed Maurizio Sarri if the Chelsea head coach is sacked.

Lampard is Chelsea’s record goalscorer, won every club honour during 13 years as a player at Stamford Bridge and is impressing as he makes his managerial bow with English Championship side Derby County. Sarri’s position could be under threat following Sunday’s 6-0 loss at Manchester City, another of Lampard’s former clubs, as the Blues slipped to sixth place in the Premier League. - PA

Juventus sign Ramsey Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has signed a pre-contract agreement with Juventus, the Serie A club have announced. The 28-yearold has agreed to a four-year deal and will officially join the Italian champions on July 1, the day after his Arsenal contract expires.

Confirmation of the move ends considerable speculation over the future of the Wales international.

Reports have claimed Ramsey will earn between Stg250,000 and Stg400,000 per week after the transfer.

Senior numbers strong

Mid Canterbury United looks set to up the number of senior men’s teams it has playing in Mainland Football competitions this season, but it’s a different story in the youth grades.

Only two youth grade teams look set to travel to Christchurch to compete under the Mid Canterbury United Football Club banner this season, Mid Canterbury Football’s Roger Dakers said.

Trials for travelling teams were held at Argyle Park on Sunday and while in the past Mid Canterbury United had managed to field teams in every grade from

12th grade through to 19th grade, this year numbers were down and it looked like there’d just be 13th and a 17th grade Mid Canterbury United teams.

But, while numbers were down in the youth grades, it was a different story in the senior ranks, Dakers said.

After a stellar 2018 where they dominated the men’s division two competition and earnt promotion to division one for 2019, Mid Canterbury United’s flagship team were already training hard for a big season ahead, and it was likely they wouldn’t be the only Mid Canterbury United team in the men’s divisions this season.

Dakers said a group of predominantly Fijian men who were living in Mid Canterbury were keen to enter a team, and they were eyeing up a crack at division six, playing as Mid Canterbury United.

Dakers said there was also a number of 18 and 19 year olds keen to play, and Mid Canterbury Football was determined to keep anyone who wanted to play, in the sport.

“There’s not enough for a 19th grade team but maybe if we combine them with a few older ones who don’t want the pressure of division one,” Dakers said.

That meant it was possible a third men’s team could play in

the Mainland Football competitions this season, and it was also hoped a masters men’s team would also be re-established to play in one of Mainland’s masters grades this season.

How many teams Mid Canterbury United would end up with this season though, came down to people putting their hands up and committing to the season, and with entries required to be with Mainland Football shortly, those commitments were required now.

The Mainland Football season will start on April 6, while the local Mid Canterbury Football competition will kick off in term two.

Wolves deny Mapgies win with late goal Newcastle United were denied a vital win in their fight for Premier League survival by a contentious last-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Isaac Hayden put Newcastle in front on 56 minutes but five minutes into stoppage time, Willy Boly snatched a point for the hosts with a header.

The result left Newcastle 16th,

one point and two places above the relegation zone, while Wolves remained seventh.

“Everyone knew that we had three points and it was very disappointing to concede the way we conceded,” Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez said.

“I think it was a difficult game.

Benitez did not blame officials but bemoaned his side’s fortune,

having also conceded in the fifth minute of added time when the two sides met at St James’ Park.

“It was not very clear watching the replay [if it was a foul or not],” Benitez said in his post-match press conference.

“We know it’s England, we must defend the cross better.

“People will come against the keeper, he has to be stronger.”

Victor Laguardia and Jony scored the goals as Alaves recorded a 2-0 Spanish La Liga victory over Levante at the Estadio Mendizorroza. Laguardia headed home from a 23rd-minute corner and Jony added a second in the third minute of stoppage time as Alaves sealed a first win in five matches and ended a three-game losing streak. The result lifted the Basque side above Real Betis into sixth on the table.

Martial a happy man Anthony Martial believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tactics are “easier” for Manchester United players to understand than those of Jose Mourinho. Solskjaer has overseen a dramatic change in fortunes for United since replacing Mourinho in December, and will be looking for his 11th victory in 12 games when Paris St Germain visit Old Trafford in the Champions League. Martial has put the improvements down to Solskjaer’s more attacking style. “Perhaps it is easier to play this style of football and not the style of football (Mourinho) asked.”

Her display prompted Sydney FC coach Ante Juric to suggest he might double-team Kerr or that his side must aim to outscore the 25-year-old to take out the championship. Nonu targets World Cup

By Patrick Mckendry At the age of 36 but appearing as fit and strong as he ever has as he trained in the scorching Auckland sun yesterday, Ma’a Nonu will attempt to roll back the years and represent the All Blacks in Japan at the World Cup in September.

Speaking to the media for the first time since his return to the Blues (his third stint at the franchise) from three years at French club Toulon, it was clear that Nonu is targeting a return to the All Blacks too and in particular a World Cup. If he makes it to Japan it will be his fourth tilt at the Webb Ellis Cup. Not that he made it obvious during his six-minute interview with one of the largest media scrums to visit the Blues in a long time.

Asked if another World Cup was a major driver, he said: “I think it’s there in everyone’s minds. For me it’s trying to make the Blues team first so one step at a time.”

Queried on what it would mean to go to Japan with the All

Blacks after the disappointment of his 2003 World Cup in Australia and back-to-back successes in 2011 and 2015, he said: “All I’m thinking about is lunch right now and this game this week so I can’t really tell you.”

It’s understood that Nonu has privately spoken of his desire to complete a remarkable comeback on the biggest stage but it’s not surprising that he’s keeping his cards close to his chest in public.

He’s usually not the most loquacious and, besides, he won’t be doing much beyond this Blues season if he doesn’t perform well for Leon MacDonald’s men, starting with the Crusaders at Eden Park on Saturday.

He’s aware of that and aware too that All Blacks coach Steve Hansen will be watching closely (although he said Hansen hadn’t been in contact).

Nonu hasn’t won a Super Rugby title either, although he went close a couple of times with the Hurricanes, and he probably feels he owes a little something to the Blues after a couple of disappointing stints with the franchise in 2012 and 2014.

Ma’a Nonu Questions remain about how much pace the well-travelled Nonu has in his legs – he will turn 37 on May 21 – but the midfielder, who played 103 caps for the All Blacks, has always had the capacity to surprise, and, crucially, he has always been a durable and dependable player at the top level.

Jack Goodhue, 23, appears to have the No.13 jersey sewn up for the All Blacks this year if he stays fit but, with fellow midfield-

ers Sonny Bill Williams and Ryan Crotty suffering more than their share of injuries, Nonu could present a compelling case for inclusion.

“I haven’t thought about stopping so hopefully I can still play at this level,” he said.

“That’s the challenge I’m looking forward to.”

Asked how he stayed in shape despite his advancing years, Nonu, who played 60 minutes for the Blues against the Hurricanes in Mangatainoka on Saturday, said: “Just [minding] what you put in your mouth, really.

“I haven’t always been in great shape, but I’ve learned over the years about my body and mind.

“I’m older.

“I hope I still have the wisdom upstairs and the physicality as well to play in Super Rugby because it’s really intense.

The Top 14 is a brutal, brutal competition in Europe. I learned a few things.

“I haven’t won Super Rugby before.

“I’ve played a lot of semi-finals for the Hurricanes.

“It’s another driver for this year.”

Lentjes faces some tough competition The Farmlands Cup match against the Crusaders felt like a home game for Highlanders flanker James Lentjes.

He grew up in Leeston and had played plenty of junior grade games at Southbridge – the scene of this year’s Farmlands Cup Super 15 pre-season match on Friday.

“I actually played a few times for Southbridge because sometimes Leeston had to amalgamate teams.”

When he was 14, Lentjes left for St Bedes and Friday’s fixture was his first run back at his old stomping ground, turning up in enemy colours.

Lentjes scored a try early an industrious performance to put pressure on coach Aaron Mauger to keep him in the 7 jersey against the Chiefs in round 1 in Hamilton on Friday.

He faces stiff competition in the Highlanders loose forward unit with All Black Dillon Hunt the likely starter at openside in a group that includes Liam Squire, Luke Whitelock, Elliot Dixon, Dan Pryor, Jackson Hemopo, Marino Mikaele Tu’u and Shannon Frizell.

Chase draws the coveted ace Drawing the ace means hopes are high ahead of Chase Auckland’s Chariots Of Fire tilt at Menangle on Saturday night.

The comeback pacer got a major leg-up over his main rivals when drawing barrier one in the $200,000 Group 1 mile feature.

Australian favourite, Ignatius, who downed Chase Auckland at Menangle on Saturday night, has been stuck with barrier 9.

The second favourite, Poster Boy, has drawn beside his Australian counterpart in barrier 8.

The combination of Chase Auckland’s draw advantage and the hope that his master trainers, Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen, can have their pacer peaking on Saturday has his owners optimistic.

Syndicate manager Ivan Behrnes said a 30-strong contin-

gent were set to invade Menangle on Saturday night to support their pacer.

Chase Auckland looked to have little excuse for being beaten by Ignatius in the Group 2 Paleface Adios last weekend.

Chase Auckland led on a comfortable 57sec first 800m, before Ignatius was able to sit parked outside him and beat him.

It is hoped that Chase Auckland can show improvement from that race, given it was just his third start in the past eleven months.

“Natalie was really happy and so was Mark,” Behrnes said.

“He has had a chequered preparation and as Mark said he lacks that really hard race fitness.

“He is improving on every start, he tried so hard on Saturday night, but it was just that lack of race-hardness that told.

Driver Natalie Rasmussen “Fingers crossed that Mark can do his magic.”

Chase Auckland’s start in the Chariots Of Fire will see him return to Group 1 racing for the first time since his victory in the Northern Derby at Alexandra Park in March.

Gate flyer Picard has drawn beside the Auckland Reactor gelding in barrier two.

That means Chase Auckland, with Rasmussen in the sulky, will have a big fight on his hands to hold the lead.

Chase Auckland is part of a four-strong New Zealand attack on the Menangle feature.

All U Need Is Faith was handed the best of the draws among Chase Auckland’s Kiwi counterparts in barrier four. The All Stars pacer ran fourth behind Ignatius last weekend after getting a nice run in the one-one.

Ashley Locaz’s Chariots Of Fire stocks took a hit when he drew the outside of the front line.

The Paul Court-trained Hail Christian will start beside Ashley Locaz in 9 if the race’s two emergencies are scratched.

House team win seven Michael House entered the record books with seven training wins at Manawatu yesterday. It equalled the New Zealand record, which had been achieved four times previously, but he was the first one to do it on his own. Ironically, it was very much a team effort for House, who wasn’t even on course to enjoy the landmark day. Blair Orange, his usual driving partner at the Manawatu meetings, drove six of the seven winners – a personal best for him.

Hamish Bond has missed out on the chance to represent New Zealand at the upcoming track cycling world championships in Poland – and he admits he’s not happy about it.

The former Olympic rower has shown record-breaking potential as a track cyclist after setting a national record in the individual pursuit last weekend at the national championships in Cambridge, where he eventually beat 2017 world champion Jordan Kerby in the final.

However, his record time of 4 minutes and 12.436 seconds fell out of Cycling NZ’s selection window of January 29, which meant it wasn’t able to be considered for the upcoming world championships.

Cycling NZ decided against selecting anyone for the individual pursuit as it gives a priority to Olympic Games events, reports Stuff.

Bond said he was “irked” by Cycling NZ’s decision.

“I guess the point that irked me is I think I’m now the second fastest pursuit rider this season and I’m not allowed at the world championships,” Bond said.

“No effort was made to get me there.

“Why have the world champs if you can’t get the best people along to compete?

“The opportunity to win a prestigious jersey like Bradley Wiggins and some of the greats ... an athlete’s life is finite and I guess mine is more finite than some so you don’t pass up those opportunities lightly, and that was the crux of my disappointment.”

Applicants for this position should have NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa and a current New Zealand driver’s licence.

Bond said he understood why Cycling NZ would prioritise Olympic events, given their limited resources, which is why he says he offered to pay his own way to the world champs.

Mickelson makes it five Phil Mickelson won the Pebble Beach ProAm by three strokes yesterday, equalling Mark O’Meara’s record of five victories in the northern California event.

Mickelson recorded his 44th PGA Tour triumph in style with a closing seven-under-par 65 at Pebble Beach.

“This really is a special place for me, going back to 1919 when my grandfather was one of the initial caddies here,” the 48-year-old said after becoming the oldest winner of the event.

“This was the first event for me as a pro.

To win here this week is something I’m going to cherish.”

Mickelson and Casey were the only players who did not complete the weather-delayed event on the Sunday night.

“I thanked Paul this morning because I sometimes in my own little bubble I don’t see the big picture,” Mickelson said.

“We had a chance to come out today on fresh greens, better weather and be able to see a lot better.”

Mid Canterbury Netball has been helping the district’s players work on their pre-season fitness, by putting on a series of boot camps.

Mid Canterbury Netball’s netball development officer Natalie Shaw said the boot camps were a precursor to a series of player development sessions which would

run for four straight weeks at the conclusion of the boot camps.

The boot camps are running on a Thursday night at the EA Networks Centre and they have two weeks left to run before the player development sessions get under way.

“We want our players to have the best start to the season in 2019, whatever their ability and playing level, and our player development

programme is designed for this,” Shaw said.

“Each of the four weeks will be run by specialist coaches who will focus on a particular skill.”

The specialist coaches will include local players and coaches, as well as Netball New Zealand’s Hannah Coutts, former Silver Fern Angela Mitchell, and Mainland Beko Netball League assistant coach Andrea Cousins and

Mainland Beko player Kelsey Ashworth – both of whom were from Ashburton.

Anyone wanting to register for the player development sessions could do so via the Mid Canterbury Netball website.

The sessions will also be opened up to coaches to go along and watch and learn from the specialist coaches.

The series of sessions would

cost $40 for players, but were free for coaches.

Netball will get under way in Ashburton in April when the EA Networks Centre hosts the 2019 Inter Centre competition for premier one and two level teams from the Mid Canterbury, Selwyn, Christchurch, South Canterbury and North Canterbury netball centres. It will be held over two Sundays, April 7 and April 14.
