■ BOWLS

Future of bowls in good hands By Dale BuDge Departing Black Jacks coach Dave Edwards will take a lot of pride in his team’s success at the World Bowls Championships as he prepares for a major career change over the holiday period. Edwards is celebrating his team’s haul of seven medals (two gold, one silver and four bronze) from the just-completed tournament in Christchurch as he gets ready to move across the Tasman and take up a new coaching role at a Queensland club. His decade-long tenure as coach of the national side came to an end with singles player Shannon McIlroy’s gold medal triumph. “It is a fantastic and a very emotional finish to the tournament for me and the end of my tenure as Bowls NZ national coach,” Edwards said. “[It was a] hugely emotional moment when Shannon got that final point to get him across the line. “I’m very delighted, very happy with the overall result for sure.” McIlroy’s success carries extra weight given that Edwards has had such a big impact on McIlroy’s career. “Shannon is based in Nelson where I am and we have worked together a lot in the build-up to this event and over a long period now,” Edwards explained. “The big shift for Shannon was the mental shift. “He worked very closely with John Quinn our mental skills coach, who is one hell of an asset to our organisation. “He has worked very closely with John on overcoming just a few little mental barriers he had around self-belief and confidence

Departing coach Dave Edwards. levels. We all knew Shannon had the ability with the bowl in his hands but he just had to believe that. “He has overcome that hurdle now. “I think the world is his oyster now.” With replacements already named in former Black Jacks players Sharon Sims and Peter Bellis, Edwards is comfortable with his decision now that it has become a reality. “I think the timing is right for a fresh voice. I am very confident that I am leaving the group in incredibly good hands in Sharon Sims and Peter Bellis is going to stay involved as well. There is a bit of continuity there but also a fresh voice for the players.” When he reflects on his long time at the helm of the side Edwards says the biggest achievements came at the World Championships and also points out the success at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. “The key thing I am really proud of is the culture change. We became one team, but we brought them together and I worked really hard on the culture of the team. “I am a great believer of if you have a good culture the wins will come.” - NZME

Westbrook’s triple double streak ends Russell Westbrook’s NBA triple-double streak has ended at seven games, but he still played a starring role with 37 points to steer the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 99-96 win over the Boston Celtics yesterday. Westbrook had 12 rebounds, but fell short of a triple-double with six assists. His triple-double run was the longest since Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan had seven straight in 1989. The record is nine in a row by Philadelphia’s Wilt Chamberlain in March 1968. Kiwi Steven Adams scored 16 points on sevenfor-eight shooting and Enes Kanter added 14 points for the Thunder, who have won seven of eight. Oklahoma City got away with making just 14 of 27 free throws. Golden State roared back to avoid their first set of consecutive regular-season losses since 2015 with a 116-108 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Klay Thompson scored 30 points and Stephen Curry added 22 points and nine assists. Philadelphia defeated the Detroit Pistons 9779 with Robert Covington scoring 16 points and Ersan Ilyasova racking up 15 in leading the 76ers to victory. Jahlil Okafor finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, and T.J. McConnell added 12 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for the 76ers, who snapped a four-game losing streak against the Pistons. - AAP

In brief Sixers recruit Billings When English big-hitter Sam Billings pulls on the magenta shirt for the Sydney Sixers, he will do so with a point to prove ahead of next year’s Ashes tour. Having represented his country at England ODI and Twenty20 level, the 25-year-old right-hander has ambitions to play test cricket. He sees a correlation between his stints in the Indian Premier League and Pakistan Super League and being selected on the upcoming limited overs tour of India. - AAP

Tour a big challenge Bangladesh are giving themselves every chance of making a decent fist of their tour to New Zealand starting on Boxing Day. They haven’t toured New Zealand since 2010 and although they gave the New Zealanders a fright in their World Cup clash in Hamilton early last year, they are yet to win a single match in this country. Altogether they have played five tests, seven ODIs and a T20, for 13 losses. However, Bangladesh are now a far better, more combative side than in their formative years. They are a tough prospect in their home conditions as their win over England in October by 108 runs testifies. - NZME
