Sporting codes might be keen for a new greenfield development around Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre, but they might be forced to come up with the cash to make this happen. While the Ashburton District Council has the development on its radar, it won’t be rushing in to start work and it won’t be footing all of the bill, says council service delivery manager Neil McCann. Rugby and softball had already signalled an interest in using the greenfield area, but there were a lot of questions to be answered by all sporting codes about the project in terms of both use and funding, McCann said. “The council will be taking its time with this because we’ve already had a lot of expenditure down there. We’ll be do-
ing this in a planned and careful manner because it could be quite costly.” Before any plans could be built around the development, the results of a recently completed geo-technical report were needed to determine whether the area was suitable for development, he said. Most of the land is riverbed, with some of it used in the past as a rubbish dump. There would also need to be debate around the future of individual rugby clubs if a new rugby hub at EA Networks Centre went ahead, McCann said. “Some clubs might be looking at their future development or relocation and we’ll need to ask whether this could be the rugby hub for the whole town. Once we get the technical report we’ll have something we can get around the table with to look at the options.” That cautious approach could see a time lapse between the council’s plans
and when Mid Canterbury Rugby would like the new sports fields to be ready for use, chief executive Ian Patterson said. The rugby union’s current lease at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds is up for renewal in 2018. “We’re working with A&P and we do have to look at other options. The stadium area is certainly one of our options, but time is drifting by,” Patterson said It was important to know whether the council would play a role in leading the development or whether they would continue to react to community needs, For rugby the timing was critical, he said. “The stadium is great, but the concept for this was banging around for a long, long time; we can’t wait that long. When you wait, the costings go up. It would be great to think we could co-operate proactively about the future needs of all sporting groups – not just rugby.”
