Several Ashburton primary schools have hit roll capacity and are now sticking strictly to zone boundaries to determine student eligibility. Four of five urban primary schools have zones in place, with Netherby completing the final paperwork for its zone. Principal Phil Wheeler anticipates this will be in
place by term four. His school has already passed roll capacity and he’s looking forward to the day when that roll includes all children who live within zone. “Currently we have children who are not in zone at our school, but we also have children in our zone who are attending other schools. If all children went to their own zoned school it would make life
easier and it would create a better socio-economic balance in each school,” he said. White flight was a reality in Ashburton, not just in city schools, he said. “It’s perception, a stigma around decile ranking but once it’s in place it’s very hard to overcome it.” Netherby’s roll capacity is 144 students. It is currently at 156 with anoth-
er 10 students to start shortly. “This is not a huge issue yet, but if we continue to grow we’ll have problems,” he said. Last year the roll hit 159 but because a number of those students were out of zone, the school did not qualify for extra Ministry of Education funded teaching space. students, principal Peter Melrose said. His school is currently still accepting out of zone enrolments. An additional classroom secured two years ago has given it the capacity to accept out of zone students, he said.
