■ CAMERON COURTS RESTHOME AND RETIREMENT VILLAGE

Still under statutory management

Cameron Courts Resthome and Retirement Village remains under statutory management after a new clinical nurse manager was appointed temporary manager at the end of June.

It was understood the home was struggling to retain nursing staff.

Carolyn Gullery, Canterbury District Health Board general manager of planning and funding, said Cameron Courts continues to be supported to

achieve appropriate levels of staffing, administrative and care requirements.

“An essential component of this work is embedding policies and procedures into normal practice with routine monitoring systems established.

“This work is progressing well and Canterbury DHB will continue to support Cameron Court to ensure we are working in partnership for the benefit of the residents, families and wider community,” she said.

The policies and procedures

mentioned cover things like organisational management, consumer rights, continuum of service delivery, safe and appropriate environment, infection prevention and control, Gullery said.

There is no timeframe for how long the home will remain under statutory management.

“Cameron Courts will remain in statutory management until the Canterbury DHB is confident that they have appropriate and sustainable levels of staffing, administrative and care

requirements,” she said. However, Canterbury District Health Board assures people the statutory management is a positive step in resolving the staffing issue.

At the time of the home being placed under statutory management, Gullery said routine audits are undertaken to measure compliance and provide pathways for continuous quality improvements.

New nursing director for Ashburton Hospital

Ashburton Hospital’s new director of nursing is settling in well to her new role.

Jane Brosnahan started two weeks ago on August 1, after finishing her old position as director of nursing and midwifery for the South Canterbury District Health Board in Timaru, which she held for four years.

During that time she was also the director of Allied Health.

Brosnahan makes the commute to and from Timaru each day, but said the drive isn’t bad because there isn’t a lot of traffic.

“Who wouldn’t want a drive in the morning with the mountains as a backdrop,” she said.

She has also worked in a number of different positions in Auckland, including nurse advisor for Southern Cross Hospitals and clinical nurse consultant at Auckland District Health Board.

She also holds the role of honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Auckland.

However, the long-time nurse never intended nursing as a career, as she originally trained as a Journalist at the Wellington Polytechnic in 1983.

Despite their differences, Brosnahan said her journalism training still comes in handy, especially when she’s writing for in-house communications.

But due to a lack of jobs she found herself in a temporary role in aged care in Timaru, where

she decided that was the career for her.

who can both implement processes and maintain them, this is generally more challenging in smaller communities where the workforce pool is limited and there may be a high turnover of senior staff,” she said.

Aged Residential Care facilities are required to undergo regular audits to ensure they meet a number of standards remain certified.

The audits provide a way to measure compliance on standards of care and ways to improve quality.

From waste land to wanted land An area of unused land around the Ashburton Riverbed could be in for a new lease of life.

Some of the land was used in the past as a BMX track which has long been abandoned, and the Ashburton District Council is now eyeing it, and adjacent land, for two possible new uses.

The Ashburton Mountain Bike Club is keen to reinstate the track for BMX riders and intends to use funds from its six-hour race for this work.

It hopes to run the new pump track on land which is adjacent to the Ashburton Contracting shingle yard and alongside the mountainbike river trail.

The new trail could be linked to the EA Networks Centre.

The council is also eyeing land in this area as it looks at options for increasing the number of dog exercise areas around Ashburton.

Environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson and environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle have looked at a number of options, including an area alongside the BMX track.

This area is already fenced and could be developed into a dog exercise area at very little cost, Ms Donaldson said.

Sarah’s passion for collecting now a business

Sarah Chamberlain has turned her passion for collecting interesting things into a business.

The Ashburton mum can thank her own mum Janet for instilling a love of collectibles that ranges from vintage clothing and china, to industrial and antique household items.

Chamberlain has spent 20 years building a collection that she describes as eclectic; yesterday she moved some of the pieces to Ashfords Village into a shop called One Off Old Stuff. The shop will be open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm – except it doesn’t feel like work.

She said there was a big thrill in chasing and researching an interesting object discovered online or in a garage sale or a second-hand shop.

“It is the story as well as the craftsmanship. It’s that provenance.”

Chamberlain said her personal

tastes were wide-ranging and most of her collection had now been barcoded and was for sale, excluding a few precious Crown Lynn pieces. The more she sells, means the more she can buy.

Her husband Simon, she says, has fully supported her transition into business ... after carefully sidestepping hundreds of objects on display or in storage around their house for years.

Chamberlain said she and sister Bethany spent many hours with their mother in antique shops when they were little.

“In the 1970s when everyone else was into retro, mum was still into blue and white antiques and 100-year-old chiffoniers.”

She said she still had many pieces to upcycle, which could mean turning half a dozen pool cues into coat rack, or making cushions and bags from antique fabric.

The village is also home to Boondocks, Amelia’s Antiques and Happy Medium gifts.

Mayoralty a two-horse race

Just when it appeared Ashburton mayor Angus McKay would have a free ride back into the district’s top job, a challenge has been mounted by one of his councillors.

At the 11th hour Donna Favel lodged a nomination for the mayoralty that is likely to see the Ashburton District hit with one of its toughest election campaigns in years.

Both McKay and Favel were elected to the council at the 2010 elections. Both stood as councillors and McKay did the dual campaign, also running for mayor.

He stood against incumbent Bede O’Malley and Bev Tasker who had served several terms as

a district councillor. McKay won.

In 2013 he faced challenges from one of his councillors Don McLeod and from Russell Ellis who had already thrown his hat in the ring as a council candidate.

That Favel was likely to stand for mayor was one of the district’s worst kept secrets, but she held off showing her hand until the final hour before nominations closed.

That decision was deliberate and had everything to do with ensuring there would be a mayoral election, Favel said.

“I’d been in Japan for 10 days and didn’t want to put it in before I went away but I was also looking to see if other names came in. For the sake of democracy and in the belief that the community is enti-

tled to a vote, I decided to put my name forward,” she said.

Every other issue would go to the polls and it was important the mayoralty did too, Favel said.

“Ultimately the choice is the peoples’.”

Favel said she had been thinking about standing as mayor for some time. As owner of a sevenday business there were many issues to consider before making that commitment, she said.

“I needed to be sure I was very aware of the consequences for me and the consequences for the community.”

McKay he was a strong believer in having challenge and choice because that was at the heart of a democratic society.

a choice and until nominations close you just don’t know who you’ll be up against.

“I’ve always had a campaign prepared as part of the ritual I go through before I put my own nomination in. I’ve had to run a campaign each time and this is what drives me over the three years,” he said.

The elections were still eight weeks away and for himself and all candidates who were seeking re-election, the business of council had to remain business as usual.

And that also meant that while a mayor and a challenging councillor might be after the same job, their campaign had to be kept away from the council table, McKay said.

As the current mayor, McKay said it was a very positive thing for the district to have elections for all issues and to have such a large number of candidates coming forward.

“It shows that people are interested in their district, and so they should be, it’s one of New Zealand’s fastest growing.”

Angus McKay is a Methven farmer and Donna Favel a cinema owner. He has served two terms as the district’s mayor and is an ex-Environment Canterbury councillor; she is a two-term councillor and this term has been deputy chair of the council’s finance and business support committee.

Ashburton’s new youth hub has gained another service to provide assistance to the young community.

The programme, which is provided by the Mid Canterbury YMCA, is for 16 to 17-year-olds who are not in employment, education or training, also known as NEET. Sharon Watson is the YMCA youth coach and said the service aims to wrap support around young people who are undecided on their future path.

“Once they have decided what their path is, I don’t just leave them to go, I keep in touch with them and create a support system,” she said.

Mrs Watson said the programme aims to provide a service for young people to get into study or employment and also help young people identify what they want to do later in life.

“Sometimes it’s just hearing something from another person, a parent could say something and their teenager could ignore it, but if someone else says it they usually listen,” she said.

Fire concerns Electrical faults in Samsung washing machines are still raising concerns as another catches on fire. Wellington resident David Crocky Hargreaves was unaware his Samsung machine was one of the recalled models. Hargreaves posted a status on a Facebook group page to warn others to stop using the faulty Samsung machines after he read an article about another washing machine that caught fire at a Manawatu home. “There are probably other people out there who don’t know,” he said.

Death on farm The man who died in a workplace accident on Thursday afternoon was a farm worker in his 50s. Fred Thorby is believed to have been caught in a potato harvesting machine. St John spokesman Mark Tregoweth confirmed one person died at a property on Barber Road, Shannon, 35km southwest of Palmerston North.

This comes after the BASE Youth Centre and Hype Youth Health Centre moved into the YMCA building in May. YMCA Mid Canterbury manager, Poppy Cooper-Vear, said the YMCA is the only provider

of the NEET programme in Mid Canterbury.

“It fits in really well with the services we already provide here and it has added to the synergy of the youth hub,” she said.

NEET is a confidential service and the programme takes differ-

ent types of referrals.

“We can take referrals from both Mt Hutt College and Ashburton College, as well as selfreferrals and from parents and guardians,” Mrs Watson said.

Mrs Watson said she can’t wait to get cracking.

Prison fights weekly

■ ASHBURTON PARENTS CENTRE

Organised fighting between prisoners was happening at least once a week while Serco was running Mt Eden Corrections Facility, the chief inspector of prisons concluded. Corrections will publish the inspector’s full report shortly, after a judicial review sought by Serco was dismissed.

In a judgment published yesterday, Justice Karen Clark of the Wellington High Court noted that the chief inspector believed organised fighting was happening at least once a week during certain periods. Serco told the chief inspector that organised fighting usually took place in cells out of sight of prison officers and CCTV, or the exercise yard during unsupervised periods.

Next phase begins following closure scare

The Ashburton Parents Centre will continue to provide support to Ashburton families thanks to the support of the community.

Last month, the Ashburton Parents Centre held its annual general meeting, following an unsuccessful attempt in June when it failed to meet the re-

quired number of attendees to legally hold the meeting.

The parents centre facilitator Debbie Kell said the committee gained three new members and several other people expressed interest in joining.

“The parents centre wouldn’t be able to continue running without people putting their hands up to help,” she said.

A Special Olympics basketball tournament is set to be hosted in the EA Networks Centre Stadium in Ashburton.

Nine teams from across the Upper South Island will travel down to play a series of games between August 20 and 21.

Graeme Bain, Special Olympics upper South Island co-ordinator, said the regional competition

is a precursor for nationals and for the first time teams from the West Coast will be competing.

Although we have no basketball team of our own, Ashburton was picked to host the competition for a couple of reasons.

Mr Bain said firstly it is important for players to be able to stay away from home while competing, so spending a night in Ashburton was a good stepping stone for the five-day national compe-

tition. Secondly, it is hoped that hosting in Ashburton will raise awareness of the Special Olympics here and encourage people to come forward and join.

Special Olympics players in Ashburton currently compete in two sports, bocce and swimming and some players will be competing in competitions later this year.

The two-day competition will start at midday on the Saturday

with an opening ceremony, before a skills competition and then moving into basketball, ending at 5.30pm.

Mr Bain said prizes and medals will be handed out for players in the skills competition as it’s important to recognise the ability of players who might not be able to play a full game of basketball.

Play will resume at 8.30am on the Sunday and finish with a medal ceremony starting at

around 12.30pm. Medals will be given out by mayor Angus McKay. He said it was important for people to gain awareness of Special Olympics, because it was for players with an intellectual disability who often times struggled to advocate for themselves.

However, Mr Bain said he always asked volunteers not to focus their disability, but look at their different abilities.

Spring into society of arts new exhibition

Fertiliser drives down scout fees

Spring has sprung in the Ashburton Society of Art’s Short Street Studio.

Opening today is the society’s Spring Show and Ngaio McKee said the exhibit already has 12 artists signed up, and she is hoping to attract a few more.

“There will be a range of experience and ability at the exhibit,” she said.

“The artwork will be for sale and people can pick up some nice works from new exhibitors for quite low prices.”

The Ashburton Society of Arts aims to have four exhibitions in their Short Street studio every year.

Mrs McKee said this year’s shows were mostly seasonal, except they are having an exhibition around Christmas instead of a winter showcase.

As well as members of the Ashburton Society of Arts exhibiting their work, there will also be a guest artist from Christchurch, Katrina Mitchell.

Mrs McKee said the show doesn’t have a theme and is more of an opportunity for artists to show the wider public some of their works.

The show will be in the Ashburton Society of Arts Short Street Studio and opens at 10am today.

The show will be open on weekends and when the sign is outside the studio and it will run for six weeks.

This time next week, the Mania-o-Roto Scout troop will be elbow deep in manure, bagging it for delivery for this year’s fertiliser drive.

The fundraiser began when the scout group were fundraising to build a new scout den, but one of the drive’s organisers Barry Marett said once the den was complete, they wanted to keep the fundraiser going.

“Now we use the fundraiser to help pay group fees and the membership levies.

“We are trying to get the price of the subs down as low as we can,” he said.

Marett said the drive seems to be getting more popular each year they run it.

“We have had a lot of order forms back in already, a lot of people from the past drives have put in their orders and each year that number just builds up.”

Marett said the scout troop have been running the fertiliser fundraiser for about five or six years.

The scouts will be filling up the bags with fertiliser on August 20 and the delivery date is August 27.

hen Jim Chivers died his family lost a husband, dad, grandad and great grandad, but the aviation industry lost a living archive.

Jim’s knowledge of aircraft and aviation history was without peer and for decades he was the district’s go-to man for anyone wanting to know anything to do with aeroplanes.

He was a young boy who biked out to the Ashburton Airport to watch planes land and take off, became a young man who gained his private pilot’s licence and later an adult who built up an encyclopaedic knowledge of the aviation industry.

And that love of aviation was something that became a passion he shared with his children, son Michael says.

“We always used to joke as a family that he couldn’t remember birthdays but he could tell you which aircraft had landed at Ashburton and on which day.”

While many people had a keen interest in aviation, for his dad it was a passion, he said.

Jim gained his pilot’s licence in 1949, becoming the 25th pupil trained by the Mid Canterbury Aero Club to fly solo and while his years at an aircraft’s control were curtailed by fatherhood and the demands of family life, his love for aviation remained and grew.

Like many young men of his era, life was not easy. Jim left school at 15 to help support the family. His mother gave him a weekly allowance of five shillings (about 50 cents), almost all of which he saved to pay for flying hours towards gaining his licence.

Put in context, Michael said, his dad’s lessons in the late 1940s cost four pounds (about $8) an hour; when he gained his licence in the 1970s lessons cost $9.50 an hour.

Jim was the son of a baker and when he left school he followed family tradition into a bakery, but was quick to leave when he was offered a job as a trucking offsider at Burnetts.

An opportunity came later to move into truck painting and that laid the foundations for his own business venture, Cavill and Chivers spraypainters.

The business later became Chivers Spraypainting and relocated to Willowby, continuing to trade through to 1990.

When Jim retired from the business he simply transferred his skills to elderly aircraft at the Ashburton Aviation Museum.

His last efforts with the spray gun were in 2014 when he was 84, and most exhibits there today have had the Chivers touch.

Flying an aircraft was a passion for Jim, but gradually the histori-

cal side of the industry became all absorbing.

He was a member of the New

Zealand Aviation Historical Society, an organisation that maintained aviation records and documents. This organisation did not deal in historic aircraft however.

When an opportunity came to secure a RNZAF Harvard Trainer he was keen to see this given a new life.

A public meeting was called and the end result was the birth of the Ashburton Aviation Museum and a new home for the old aircraft.

“Dad was in at the ground floor of the project, he held every office out there apart from president.

That was a role that didn’t sit well with him, he was a background person, preferred to be out there getting things done rather than at the front,” Michael said.

If he had a favourite aircraft, it was a DH82 Tiger Moth, the same model as he flew as a young pilot.

“I think he always loved the hair in the wind thing and that sort of thing, it was probably the romantic days of flying,” Michael said.

And fittingly, there is one of those aircraft stored out at the aviation museum.

Jim’s love of aviation spilled over to sons Brian and Michael and to his grandchildren.

His huge store of aviation knowledge meant Jim became

the go-to person when anyone wanted to know anything about aircraft of any kind and that was borne out when year, after year, he won a national identify an aircraft competition.

That store of knowledge didn’t mean Jim was a big collector of memorabilia, his knowledge was stored in his memory banks. And he had instant recall, Michael said.

In later years, Warbirds Over Wanaka become a highlight on Jim’s calendar, where he relived the glory days of flying with thousands of other fans.

Reflecting on his father’s life, Michael described him as “a humble man who was one of life’s quiet achievers”. And while his dad’s formal education ended early, he was known as a man with a huge stock of knowledge and a phenomenal memory, he said.

“Look at the legacy he’s left.”

Jim died before he completed one task that was dear to his heart, writing the history of the Ashburton Airfield.

That’s a job Michael says he’s committed to seeing completed.

A big man with a big heart and big voice John Stewart Gray

J

ohn Gray was a big man with a big voice and a big heart.

The Ashburton man, who lived most of his life in Methven with wife Joyce, was a farmer who loved his family and community, devoting countless hours to St John’s Church, the Methven Choral Society, the Ashburton Savage Club and the Mania-o-Roto scout district.

He died last month, aged 82, and has been remembered for his positive, can-do attitude that inspired many.

John joined the Methven Choral Society at the age of 15 and for 65 years was a valuable contributor as president, stage manager, set builder, production manager and lead player.

That passion for theatre extended to the Ashburton Savage Club and for 52 years he attended club activities and practices, often travelling 40km from the farm to sing or entertain. He will always be remembered for his Laughing Policeman act, with full voice, full action and full uniform.

John also had a long association with St John’s Church. He and his family were regular wor-

shippers at services and in 1962 he was made a church elder.

He was parish clerk and studied to become a lay preacher; his services were often called upon to lead worship in the absence of an ordained minister, not only at St John’s but also further afield in the Mid Canterbury district.

His interest in young people led him to become a Sunday School teacher and he was a keen member of the church choir.

John’s other great passion was scouting and the Pudding Hill adventure camp will remain his legacy.

Over the years he was scout leader and district commissioner and he had a great strength of bonding people together, encouraging them to achieve greater things.

One of his visions was the Pudding Hill adventure camp.

After attending a national scout jamboree, John thought the district should run an adventure camp the Christmas after a jamboree and he gathered together a team of interested leaders and supporters and put together the Pudding Hill camp.

About 100 youth attended that first camp and many of the original people that were involved are still involved today.

The Pudding Hill site was plagued by strong nor’west winds so the site was moved to Staveley and became the Canterbury Adventure Camp. This was later changed to the Staveley Adventure Camp and over the years the numbers attending increased dramatically, up to 500 leaders and scouts attending at times.

It became known as a wonderful event for the scouting youth to attend with scouts from many parts of New Zealand spending time there.

John’s foresight was applauded and later used on another project, the planning of the new scout hall in Ashburton. He was able to attend the opening of

the buildings, despite his health issues.

His scouting peers remember he always had a meaningful yarn to present at scouts own for the scout rally. His wise and helpful advice will be sorely missed.

John’s contributions to his community were rewarded with a Queen’s Service Medal in 1993.

New library will be ‘iconic buil T

he Methven Library and Museum building has been given a $350,000 boost from the Lotteries Commission.

The project is taking shape quietly on Methven’s main street and those involved say the finished product will be an iconic building to be shared by the community.

It has been a five-year journey since the town’s library and museum buildings were damaged by earthquakes and demolished. The museum has had to put its exhibits and archives into storage since the quakes while the library has continued to operate from temporary premises in the Methven Pottery Society rooms and the Mt Hutt Roads Board building.

Library and museum building spokesperson Julie Barlass said the project had also received $100,000 from Advance Ashburton on behalf of Alma Lochhead and the Lochhead Trust, and other donations from the Methven Pottery Society and Methven Rodeo.

Barlass said the Lotteries grant meant the groups could now focus on fitting out the new building.

She said the money came from Lottery’s WW1 Commemorations, Environment and Heritage Fund, and the Lotteries Community Facilities Fund.

Confirmation of the funds was only last week and Barlass said the groups were grateful the project could progress without money worries. Decisions now needed to be taken on the fit-out of the new spaces and how to incorporate technology so that it is set for the future.

“The building is a reality and funds are in hand to complete it.

Let’s all work together to make it the community project it deserves to be. We are very confident it will be a building we can all be proud of.”

Barlass said the contribution of internationally acclaimed architect Ken Crosson was also a highlight of the project. Crosson, born and raised in Methven, has designed a building that reflects the town’s rural heritage and Barlass said it would become a community hub, inviting and accessible.

“It will be an iconic building and a wonderful replacement for the two buildings we lost.”

An award-winning architect is helping create a new community hub in Methven. Linda Clarke looks at the project’s history.

She said the space would provide smaller rooms for meetings, workshops or tutoring, and wifi throughout would be a drawcard for migrant workers with unreliable internet connections.

“Not everybody wants to go to the pub or sports club to meet people and mix with others in the community. We are hoping lots of things will happen in this space.”

She said it would be reasonably priced to reflect its users’ ability to pay and be open longer hours.

It is hoped the building will be finished by Christmas.

ward-winning architect Ken Crosson returned to his farming roots for inspiration to design the new Methven Library and Museum building.

He has designed a shed that fits amongst a main street full of sheds and warehouses, all servicing the town’s agricultural sector. But Crosson’s building will be iconic, some say it will win awards.

Julie Barlass, spokesperson for the library and museum group, said Crosson had gifted the design, which deliberately reflected the town’s agricultural heritage.

Dave McLeod, also Methven born and raised, is constructing it.

She said the new building would also incorporate a memory of the lost buildings and while it appeared simple and shed-like, the interior was interesting and quirky, with appealing spaces for a wide variety of users and community groups.

Crosson has visited at least once to gauge progress of the build.

He is currently co-presenting The New Zealand Home, on TV One on Friday nights. He and co-host Goran Paladin toured the country in a 1960s MkII Jaguar, Crosson commentating on our homes and buildings as a social history.

Crosson says his own architectural work has been influenced by landscapes of his childhood. He grew up in a 1920s Methven farmhouse made of out timber milled on the farm, with a big roof with high gables. He was the second of five boys.

He was destined to become a farmer until he discovered architecture at Methven High School (now Mount Hutt College).

He was studying the sciences, though he liked building stuff and was always drawing plans. On a careers day in Christchurch he saw Sir Miles Warren’s beautiful watercolours in the town hall and was captivated.

Crosson says beauty is important and that everyone should be exposed to good design; buildings need to be warm, clean and dry, and beautiful.

The new Methven Library and Museum building will be divided into four unequal quadrants, the library at the street-front on the

north-western corner, with high ceilings and warm north light filtered through translucent screens, creating a welcoming public zone.

The museum is positioned at the opposite, south-eastern quadrant in the darkest, coolest area, with restricted light and heat to protect the delicate historic material within.

Each quadrant is clad in a different material. The library quadrant is clothed in warm red brick, a memory of the Victorian urban buildings that have been lost.

The quadrant to the north-east is clad in dark-stained board and batten, the museum in galvanised corrugated steel, and the reception area in bevel-backed weatherboards with cover boards and soakers. These are traditional claddings, chosen to reflect building materials in common use locally.

Barlass says the new structure will be firmly rooted in Methven’s rural heritage. “The construction materials and form are derived from the existing building styles of our area. However, it has a level of craft, of delicate detailing and a crisp linear form, which give elegance and originality, demarcating this as a significant public building.

“This building is designed to be a valuable community asset, a container for existing history.

It will itself become a part of the town’s heritage for this and future generations to enjoy, appreciate and love as new memories and associations develop around it.”

‘Mentally exhausted’

By Daniel Gilhooly Perfectionist Hamish Bond has been a prisoner to rowing for the last eight years.

Mentally exhausted after clinching a second Olympic gold medal, Bond says it may be time for a change but that decision is for another day.

Bond lifted the lid on what it takes to be half of one of world rowing’s greatest crews after he and Eric Murray defended their

men’s pair title in Rio yesterday.

Four more years of physical punishment might be possible for the 30-year-old.

But Bond must decide if it’s worth the self-inflicted anguish of chasing a golden hat-trick at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“The way you live, pretty much every decision you make is ‘how will this affect my rowing?’” he told NZ Newswire.

“Whether you go for a walk in the morning.

“How late you go to bed at night. Every single decision has a caveat to it.

“It will be nice not to have that in the back of my mind for a little while.”

Such introspection helps explain their phenomenal winning run since he and Murray jumped out of a fours boat at the 2008 Olympics, having fallen short of expectations.

Still in their early 20s, they had a hunch their contrasting person-

alities might form a potent pairs blend.

Murray is the showman.

“Bond reckons his crewmate has enough unbridled confidence for the both of them.

“Eric doesn’t seem to ever have any doubt that all we need to do is go out there and row and we’re going to win.

“My personality is to think of everything that can go wrong and hence to keep driving for more and more speed and get as

close to perfection as we can.

“Having that view has been tough.”

The last 12 months have been the hardest yet for Bond but he won’t rush a decision on his future.

Taking a year off to refresh is a possibility but he hints he will stay with rowing.

“I don’t feel that I need to retire but I do feel I need to take some time and reassess the last 12 months.”

Bocock Rotterdam-bound

Longbeach’s Natalie Bocock is en route to Rotterdam after jetting off with the New Zealand Rowing Team for the 2016 World Rowing Under-23 Championships.

The coxswain was selected to the 33-strong team in April after exceptional results including a gold medal as part of the men’s under-21 eight against Australia.

She has since been preparing with her team at Lake Karapiro, training six days a week, usually twice daily, but sometimes three times.

The trainings mostly included onwater rowing and weight sessions, and the Mid Canterbury ex-pat’s team will now have a week of fine tuning before taking on the world’s best under-23s.

“It’s been a great experience and it’s great to learn together and improve,” she said.

“We’re going up against some countries with very successful rowing teams and we’ll have the opportunity to put all of our training into play out on the course.”

The former St Margaret’s student has recently transferred from Victoria University, where she studied Architecture, to Lincoln to study environmental management – making her busy schedule more manageable.

With plenty of time on her side, the 19-year-old is out to learn as much as possible from her first World Championship regatta and continue to progress – with one eye on the 2020 Olympics.

“My goals for the next three years are to either maintain my position in the under-23 rowing team, or be trialled for the elite rowing team, with consideration of the following Tokyo Olympics in 2020,” she said.

Bocock’s first race is on August 21 with the women’s eight.

The Rabbitohs might not have a finals berth on the line but their leading players are adamant they have plenty to play for against the Warriors tonight. South Sydney will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2011 but will pose a serious threat to a Warriors side looking to record back-to-back victories. Sam Burgess believes the Rabbitohs will be highly motivated for the clash. “Every athlete is extremely competitive and as soon as you cross that line all that energy comes back and you forget the situation you find yourself in on the ladder.”

Perrett hangs up boots Canterbury winger Sam Perrett has announced he will retire from the NRL at the end of the 2016 season. The Bulldogs winger, who has scored 90 tries in 252 games, also represented New Zealand in 21 Tests and was a member of their World Cup-winning side in 2008.

“It’s been a tough decision and an emotional one, but it’s time for me to hang up the boots,” the 31-yearold said.

Kata gets an earful Warriors centre Solomone Kata earned the wrath of his team-mates after he failed to carry the ball towards the sticks for an easier conversion following his memorable second try against the Titans.

“I didn’t have to have a word to him,” said coach Andrew McFadden.

last few seasons, and their best performances tend to coincide with their backline finishers helping provide momentum and quick play the balls.

Their work not only provides an ideal platform for halves Shaun Johnson and Thomas Leuluai to work off but also takes the pressure of the pack.

“That’s part of our plan and our game model works,” said coach Andrew McFadden.

“We’ve got these guys to get us going forward but there’s a real co-ordinated approach to it as well.

“It’s not just them bashing and barging.

“There’s movement around

them and that gives us more quality in their carries. It’s all a part of how we play.”

As a result, the front-rowers are able to get through plenty of tackling and play long minutes, which aids McFadden’s somewhat hotly debated preference to carry an outside back on the interchange bench.

“I have read some stuff about the interchange but we’re happy and the players are very happy with the way it’s working,” he said.

“We don’t need the forwards on the bench. We’ve got enough guys there that cover the minutes.

“We want our best players on the field for longer but we do need the versatility around injuries.

“So we prioritise Ben Matulino and those guys. Even though he’s coming off the bench, Ben’s constantly playing bigger minutes so there’s a strategy around it and we’re very comfortable with it.”

The limited game time given to Tui Lolohea during his wellpublicised bench stint was heavily criticised and for the last two weeks Blake Ayshford has been included among the reserves as both backline insurance and back-row cover.

“Blake is very versatile.

“If we were to lose an outside back it’s a really easy change for us. He’s a tough guy, and it’s a role he’s filling really well at the moment.”

Celtic, Methven to meet again

Celtic will meet Methven in the 2016 ACL Premier Grade Netball final after seeing off Ashburton College and Hampstead in their respective semi-finals at the EA Networks Centre Stadium on Thursday night.

Celtic met last season’s beaten finalists College in the evening’s opening semi-final clash and denied the school girls another crack at the district’s premier netball crown with a convincing 3219 victory.

Ange Leadley’s greens were in a determined mood from the outset with wing attack Hayley Murphy providing the shooters with plenty of ball as Celtic took a commanding 8-3 lead into quarter time.

Celtic maintained their high intensity in the second stanza, extending their lead to 11 as the defensive duo of Alice Breading and Anna Holland produced a solid display.

But the College girls rallied in the third quarter with half-time replacements Sophie Beveridge, at goal attack, and centre Kirsten Clarke making a much-needed impact as both sides put up five goals.

At 24-13, Celtic had all but secured a place in the final with 10 minutes remaining, but, to College’s credit, they continued play with urgency for a 32-19 final score.

Celtic coach Leadley said her players knew they were in for a tough challenge against a College side that has continued to improve throughout the season.

“We knew College would be giving it their all and wouldn’t give up,” she said.

“So our plan was to focus on each quarter and build a comfortable lead.”

Leadley said her team’s overall performance was pleasing, but will miss shooter Emma Bonnington and centre Rachel MacGregor for next Thursday’s final showdown.

In the night’s opposite semifinal, Methven locked horns with Hampstead.

On paper Methven, who have lost just twice this season, were resounding favourites but Hampstead were as defiant as ever.

Cindy Meadows’ team raced to an 8-4 lead in the opening 10 minutes and Methven certainly knew they were in for a challenging night.

The defending champions responded as expected in the second quarter, though.

Greta Currie’s ladies produced a game-changing spell with a ruthless display under the hoop to outscore Hampstead 11-5 and take a two goal lead into halftime.

Hampstead were more competitive in the third stanza, but Methven remained in control as the addition of goal defence Pip Kenny offered the black-andwhites stability to see out the quarter 23-17.

With just six points separating the two teams, the more optimistic of the Hampstead faithful would have held hope of a turnaround, but as they have done all season Methven again upped the intensity in the last quarter.

Hampstead struggled to keep up with the pace of play as Methven outscored them 10-3 to claim a 33-20 victory and a chance to defend their title next week.

Methven coach Currie rued some mistakes early on but credited her side for their performance.

“I think we made a couple of unforced errors in the first five minutes,” she said.

“But we got lots of turnover ball and our defence was great throughout.

“It was a really good team performance.

“I think we just came together really well in the end.”

United put up 10 in the third quarter to Southern’s four goals and were just as dominant in the final stanza to take a 33-21 victory and cement fifth place.

Ashburton College’s girls’ 1st XV will share the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ championship after a 17-17 final draw with rivals Waitaki Girls’ High School in Timaru.

College led 17-5 at half-time before disaster struck in the sec-

ond half when Riley ClaydonWade suffered a neck injury in a ruck.

Play was brought to a halt while the hooker received treatment before being taken to Timaru Hospital where she was later discharged.

Waitaki rallied in the absence

of College’s captain and piled the points on in the closing 15 minutes to level proceedings at 17-all.

College coach Grant Elvines felt the overall result was fair, with both teams producing fine performances throughout the season.

“At the time I was gutted, but on reflection the result was probably fair,” he said.

“We lost eight or nine very good senior players from last year’s team, but with lots of hard work and plenty of dedication, the girls have done very well.”

Pocock warns of All Blacks depth By adrian Warren He won’t be bumping bodies with old adversary Richie McCaw in next week’s Rugby Championship and Bledisloe Cup opener, but Wallabies dynamo David Pocock has warned New Zealand still have plenty of back row quality.

Openside flanker McCaw retired after New Zealand’s World Cup final win over Australia last year, drawing a curtain on arguably the greatest rugby union career in history.

The champion flanker was an almighty pest to opposing sides with his pilfering ability at the breakdown and had plenty of massive tussles in that area with Pocock in recent years.

“He was a feature for as long as I can remember, watching and playing, so certainly it’s a different (New Zealand) back row combination there,” Pocock said yesterday.

“But from what we’ve seen during Super Rugby and the June Tests, there’s certainly no shortage of talent in that

area for the New Zealand team.”

Pocock acknowledged All Blacks coach Steve Hansen had a difficult decision to make between McCaw’s long-time heir apparent Sam Cane and Ardie Savea, who was a standout player in the Hurricanes charge to the Super Rugby title.

“They are both very talented, I guess it’s the kind of headache you want as a coach,” Pocock said.

“Ardie has been one of the form players of the Super Rugby comp this year, so it will be really interesting to see what happens there.”

With Pocock off on a sabbatical next year, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said there was no long-term plan to permanently stick with the ‘Pooper’ back row formation he used at the World Cup, where Pocock played at No.8 and Michael Hooper at openside flanker.

“There’s no advantage for us that we’re going to go one way or the other and stick to that,” Cheika said.

Coach Sir Gordon Tietjens expects a superior approach to selection and training when New Zealand chases sevens redemption at the Tokyo Olympics. Tietjens believes the All Blacks Sevens will rise again in the wake of their disastrous Rio campaign, which ended in a quarter-final loss to Fiji. Injuries that dogged them throughout the year continued to make an impact in Rio. However, Tietjens’ cause also wasn’t helped by the unavailability of leading playing talent. New Zealand Rugby stated an Olympic gold was a priority heading into 2016 but left the decision to play to its leading players.

The challenge for ABs Steve Hansen is certain the challenge of maintaining success in test rugby is easier than trying to find it. Self-belief is the magic ingredient – the component that drives standards in training and promotes calm in those tricky moments when a game hangs in the balance. Hansen’s tenure as All Blacks coach has been all about strengthening that conviction within individual players and the collective group. Coming into the first clash of the year with Australia next week, that ingrained culture of self-belief is going to be critical. Ardie Savea has had a standout year in Super Rugby.

Even as they stood on the podium as winners, the Fijian rugby sevens side showed off one last act of humility worthy of an Olympic medal. Princess Anne was given the task of awarding the silver medalists and later, the gold medalists. As she approached each Fijian player to award him his medal, each one dropped to their knees in a sign of respect unique to Fiji and the Pacific. The humble act has been applauded by many Fijians and people from around the world, with many commenting about its uniqueness on social media.

Aimee strikes gold

imee Elliott has added another gold medal to her growing haul as part of the triumphant Canterbury under-18 women’s team at the 2016 Oceania Cross-Country Championships in Auckland.

Athletes from Australia, Fiji, Tonga, Guam, Tahiti and throughout New Zealand took to the Auckland Domain last Sunday.

Elliott placed 16th overall as the determined Canterbury foursome split up their more experienced Auckland counterparts to secure the top placing in the teams’ event.

The 16-year-old said she was surprised to win gold, considering the high level of competition.

“I was shocked more than anything.

“I knew we had a chance of medalling, but I didn’t think we could get gold,” she said.

“It was great, especially with all the training I have been doing.”

Right - Mount Hutt College student Aimee Elliott was part of the Canterbury under-18 women’s team that won gold at the recent Oceania CrossCountry Championships.

‘Green mamba’ could favour Bracewell Doug Bracewell is a chance to play the first Test against South Africa on Kingsmead’s “green mamba” pitch, says coach Mike Hesson.

The Black Caps are likely to change the mix of their side from the one that downed Zimbabwe 2-0 on featherbed pitches in Bulawayo.

They now head to seaside Durban and the pitch dubbed the “green mamba” for next week’s first test.

With Corey Anderson and Jimmy Neesham missing, the side doesn’t have a seam bowling allrounder.

Hesson said they had put a bit of that responsibility on fast-medium man Bracewell, despite the

25-year-old having a Test batting average of just 13.33.

Bracewell wasn’t picked as third seamer for the two Zimbabwe matches, losing out to Neil Wagner for the left-armer’s ability to reverse the ball and bowl short on slow surfaces, Hesson said.

“I think it’s a bit early to know what balance we’ll go with in Durban, I would think it’s highly likely to be different than here,” he said.

“Doug’s fit, he’s training well, he’s batting nicely, we know he’s ready to go if we need him.”

The side was well prepared for playing in Africa, he said.

While some had been playing in England and the Caribbean, the rest had been at a Pretoria

training camp, which was very important.

“It’s a lot different to a tent in Christchurch, which was our alternative.”

Hesson said his side would be prepared for the step up in class against South Africa.

“We are quite comfortable separating the two series ... we’ve got three good days training in Durban to get us up to speed.”

Hesson was also pleased with the form of senior batsman Ross Taylor, who scored 364 runs in three unbeaten innings in Zimbabwe.

“He’s in an excellent space and secondly playing really nicely, but I think more the mindset – and just made good decision after good decision.”

Eights on verge of history Rowing New Zealand have moved into uncharted territory with both their men’s and women’s eights making finals at the Rio Olympics.

It’s the first time women have represented New Zealand in the sport’s blue riband discipline at a Games.

For the men it ends a 32-year Olympic hiatus.

The women placed third in their repechage behind Canada and Romania.

They needed to finish in the top four to advance.

Ashburton’s Emma Dyke, along with Rebecca Scown, Genevieve Behrent, Kerri Gowler, Grace Prendergast, Kelsey Bevan, Ruby Tew, Kayla Pratt and coxswain Francie Turner hovered mid-field throughout and never looked like exiting.

The men will also contest a final after finishing third behind the United States and the Netherlands.

Facing the same requirements as the women to advance, they were fourth through much of the race, before finishing with vigour.

Stephen Jones, Brook Robertson, Alex Kennedy, Jonathan Wright, Isaac Grainger, Shaun Kirkham, Michael Brake, Tom Murray and coxswain Caleb Shepherd now get a chance to match the deeds of the famed 1972 New Zealand Olympic champion crew in Munich.

It capped a busy morning for Scown and Behrent, who qualified for the women’s pairs final an hour earlier.

They were second behind Denmark to advance to tonight’s final, thankfully a day before the eights decider, as they seek to become the first Kiwi rowers to win two medals at the same Games regatta.

Women’s lightweight double scullers Julia Edward and Sophie Mackenzie followed suit, also placing second in their semifinal.

The world champions were fifth through most of the first 1000m before improving over the second half to finish behind South Africa.

The men’s lightweight four of James Hunter, Alistair Bond, Peter Taylor and James Lassche finished fifth in their final, 7.63s behind winners Switzerland.

They were looking to put New Zealand on the podium for the first time in the discipline.

Denmark, France and Italy filled the second, third and fourth positions respectively.

The Kiwi quartet won both their World Cups at Lucerne and Poznan this season but suffered injury disruptions with Matthew Dunham filling in for Taylor.

They were fourth at last year’s world championships.

A light breeze wafted across Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon but there was no delay to start times, bringing relief to organisers who had to postpone two of the five days.

Aussies facing a whitewash

Michael Lawson will take on the North Island as part of the South Island representative team for the eighteenth time when the two sides meet for the annual test in Christchurch today.

Since 1980, each island has toured the other’s districts in alternate years and concluded with a North versus South test match for the Henry-Eddy Trophy.

In 2007, the Henry-Eddy Trophy was retired and replaced by the Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy – which the south has never won.

“The first time I was ever

picked was in 1999 – we played in Balclutha,” said Lawson.

“We got bagpiped into the hall, so that was a cool moment.”

The North Island took bragging rights again that year with a 35-13 win, and Lawson would have to wait until 2003 for his first South Island victory.

The south headed into the 2003 clash as underdogs.

With international players only available on alternate years, the North Island boasted New Zealand’s finest in the first year inter-island medals were introduced.

But the south were in a defiant mood, and went on to record a

35 points to 13 upset over their northern rivals.

“In 2003 we were without any New Zealand representatives, but our ladies were pretty strong down here and won all four medals and the men won two,” he said.

“So we didn’t just beat them, we hammered them.”

The South Island’s triumph 13 years ago remains Lawson’s only experience of a test win.

The south have claimed a fine haul of inter-island medals, but failed to claim an overall test win since.

“You always think that the team you have got is really good

and will go really well,” he said.

“It just happens that the South Island, in the past, seems to lose those really close games.”

For the first time, four Ashburton players are part of the South Island setup with Lawson joined

by Grant Wilson, Matt Markham, and Simon Thomas.

And Lawson has plenty of confidence in the 2016 team and the local contingent.

“I think this team is up there; the top two or three teams I have played in,” he said.

“I think it’s a good reflection of the hard work that has been done, the Ashburton name is more of a recognised name now.”

LeBron inks record deal with Cleveland LeBron James isn’t taking his talents anywhere this time, he’s staying with Cleveland until at least the end of the 2018-19 NBA season after re-signing with his hometown franchise.

James, whose new three-year contract at the Cavaliers is believed to be worth $US100 million ($NZ129.85 million), announced he would sign the deal via a video post on Uninterrupted yesterday.

“I can’t be more excited than this opportunity once again, man,

to defend our crown, defend our title,” James said.

The 31-year-old has previously only signed one-year deals with the NBA franchise over the past two years, however he has this time accepted a longer deal.

The deal will make James the highest-paid star in the NBA this season and after that he will become the highest paid player of all time.

He will be paid $US31 million ($NZ40.25 million) in the

first season, before his salary is increased to more than $US33 million ($NZ42.85 million) in the second, according to ESPN. “We all know last year as a magical, inspiring – all the words you can come up with – it was an unbelievable season,” he said.

“I just can’t wait to get the group back together, the team, the franchise, more importantly, get everybody together, the fans.” - AAP

As improbable as it was three weeks ago to think No.1-ranked Australia could lose their Test series to Sri Lanka, now it seems as unlikely they can avoid a 3-0 whitewash.

Angelo Mathews’ mostly raw team, stung by a winless tour of England, produced a remarkable turnaround in Kandy before humiliating Australia in Galle last week.

Given the mental scars inflicted in their 229-run mauling in the southern coastal city, it’s difficult to see how Australia can bounce back in the third Test which starts in Colombo today.

A Rangana Herath hat-trick and Usman Khawaja’s dismissal in the second innings when he shouldered arms first ball to Dilruwan Perera and was bowled typified how fragile the tourists are psychologically.

Sri Lanka’s spinners have put on a masterclass, admittedly on their home wickets that are often drier on day one than a day-four Adelaide Oval pitch, but Australia’s batsmen haven’t shown significant improvement as the series has worn on.

Their totals in four innings have been 203, 161, 106 – their lowestever score against Sri Lanka in 28 matches - and 183.

Nonetheless, arguably with typical Australian bravado, David Warner vowed not to go into his shell despite him and his teammates being bamboozled by the home side’s slow bowlers.

Father ecstatic for Luuka

Phelps in a league of his own Michael Phelps waggled four fingers, recognising another historic achievement.

Now, he’s the first swimmer ever to win the same event at four straight Olympics.

Ryan Lochte was left in his wake every time.

In what was billed as the final showdown between two of America’s greatest swimmers, Phelps blew away Lochte – and everyone else – to win his fourth gold medal of the Rio Olympics and 22nd overall with a victory in the 200-metre individual medley yesterday.

Phelps finished a full bodylength ahead of the field on the breaststroke and freestyle legs, finishing in 1 minute, 54.66 seconds.

A 12-time Olympic medalist, Lochte didn’t even make it to the podium this time, after taking two silvers and a bronze behind Phelps at the last three Olympics in this event.

Leading at the midway point, Lochte faded to fifth – nearly 3 seconds behind the winner.

Japan’s Kosuke Hagino took the silver, while China’s Wang Shun claimed the bronze.

But Phelps was in a league of his own. As usual.

He’s got one more individual event at what he insists will really be his final Olympics – remember, he already retired once – and will be looking to add a fourth straight gold in the 100 butterfly to his staggering resume.

Then, he’ll close out these Olympics in the 4x100 medley relay.

There seems little doubt he’ll go six-for-six.

Led by Phelps, it was quite a night for the powerful American team, which picked up two

more golds when Ryan Murphy completed a sweep of the men’s backstroke events in the 200 and Simone Manuel tied 16-year-old Canadian for the top spot in the 100 freestyle, stunning worldrecord holder Cate Campbell of Australia.

With the win, Manuel became the first African-American woman to capture gold in swimming.

Her fingernails painted red, white and blue, Manuel broke down in tears when she recognised her historic achievement in a sport that still struggles to attract people of colour.

It’s a surprise silver for New Zealand.

The Tauranga-born Luuka Jones has won the Olympic silver medal in the canoe slalom.

Jones was the slowest qualifier for the 10-person final yesterday, but pulled out an outstanding run as the first paddler.

Her silver medal is the third at these games.

After a dismal couple of days, it made for an encouraging day along with the gold that went to Hamish Bond and Eric Murray in the rowing.

Jones was leading but was narrowly beaten by Spaniard Maialen Chourraut who took gold.

The 27-year-old Jones is at her third Olympics, having been eliminated in the heats at Beijing in 2008, and making the K-1 semi-finals in London four years ago when she finished 14th.

Jones said her surprise Olympic success will further her dream of putting the sport “on the map”.

“I was so proud as a Kiwi to see the flag go up,” she said.

“One of my goals is to put canoe slalom on the map in New Zealand ... hopefully this will grow the sport in New Zealand.

“I left nothing out there ... I wasn’t really thinking anything, I just bared my teeth and went as hard as I could.

“I just have to thank my family and friends back home ... without their support I wouldn’t be here.

“And we had a really good vibe within the New Zealand unit.”

The father of Tauranga’s Luuka Jones has spoken of the ecstatic moment his daughter claimed a silver Olympic medal.

Luuka’s father Rod Jones said it had been an exciting morning for the family, who got up to watch the 4am semi-final.

“I was jolly nervous, we are a close family. We all know how she would have been feeling.

“I know how hard she has focused, and her sacrifices. ““We are so so proud of her.”

Rod Jones said it had been a long journey for his 27-year-old daughter.

She had shown an interest in the sport from as early as 9 years old but had always wanted to compete at the Olympics.

Luuka Jones started seriously paddling at 11 and at 17 moved to England to pursue her dream.

“We knew it was going to be a long and slow process but she is a smart girl and she has done it.”

Fiji a rugby goldmine

ome on world rugby, and particularly New Zealand and Australia.

Have a closer look at, and respect for, what exists on your doorstep.

Fiji’s Olympic sevens victory, by a stunning margin over Great Britain, is the feel good story of the Games so far.

For those of us in this part of the world, it may not be beaten.

It brought tears to Fijian eyes, and they were not alone.

But don’t let it stop there.

Fiji were amazing in the final, Great Britain no match.

Perhaps no side would have been including a cumbersome New Zealand outfit which – in hindsight – probably did quite well in keeping the margin of defeat low in their playoff against Fiji.

This is the first time a union minnow has claimed a top prize on a world stage beyond the gaze of the rugby community.

So let’s dream, of a day when Fiji might win the actual World Cup. Fijian coach Ben Ryan – England’s sevens coach for many years – said after the win in Rio that he is staggered by what he sees kids do playing rugby in Fiji.

That is easy to believe when you look at the startling combination of pace, power and skill Fijian players bring to union and league, often on the wing.

And their love of the game is off the scale.

As Ryan said: “It’s like there’s two religions in Fiji.

“On Sunday there’s church and no sport, but every other day there’s rugby.”

Ryan says if more resources were put into Fiji, it would unlock what he believes is amazing potential in all formats of the game.

He is in a great position to judge, and his post-victory comment must be regarded as significant.

Yes, there are administrative problems in that part of the world, ones that have struck Tongan and Samoan rugby in recent times.

Fiji is a political minefield.

But I often get the feeling that

Sky loses video scrap Sky Television has lost its bid to get a High Court injunction against Fairfax over the media company’s use of Olympic video. Justice John Fogarty, after a two-day hearing, released his decision yesterday in a packed Auckland courtroom. Sky argued that Fairfax’s use of Olympic footage directly competed with its own broadcasts and that it needed an injunction to ensure its copyright “was not eaten away and undermined”. Sky had paid “many millions of dollars” for its broadcast rights, the court heard.

Ambulance ‘got lost’ Claims that an ambulance sent to pick up injured New Zealand sevens player Sonny Bill Williams got lost for an hour and a half are to be investigated by the Games organisers. Williams ruptured an achilles tendon against Japan but had to wait 90 minutes to be taken to hospital. John Coates, the Australian IOC vice-president, criticised the delay, saying: “Luckily it was an achilles and not concussion.”

Fiji claimed their first ever Olympic medal with a comprehensive 43-7 thrashing of Great Britain in the final of the men’s sevens tournament.

in the Olympic final gold medal game against a British team that was steamrollered by the powerful Fijians.

Tui Kamakorewa watched the final with about 20 other passionate supporters at a house in Onehunga, Auckland, after telling his boss there was no way he would miss the biggest rugby game in Fijian rugby history.

“I told my employer I’d be watching the rugby with my

mates, it’s a special part of our culture,” he said.

“I always thought Fiji was going to win but not by how much they did. I was really stoked with that margin.”

Heading into the Games Kamakorewa thought the Fijian side would make it onto the dais, but he wasn’t convinced they would claim the ultimate prize.

“We were expecting at least a medal, but to get a gold is some-

thing beyond our greatest expectations.

“It’s big for our country, around the world people will notice there’s a country called Fiji.

“For all the people in Fiji they’ll be really stoked, they’ll be jumping up and down. If you were in Fiji you would realise how big this thing is going to be.”

“There’ll be not much work getting done in Suva today. I think there’ll be a holiday today.”

Injured French gymnast Samir Ait Said is back on his feet – showing his determination to walk again after a horrifying Olympic injury.

After suffering a gruesome double break that saw his lower leg dangling at a right-angle after a botched vault landing, the Frenchman has been recovering in Rio. Despite the severity of his injury Ait Said has been pictured looking in high spirits as he makes his first steps on the road to recovery.

Vaulter with no poles Kiwi Olympian vaulter Eliza McCartney has a major problem – her poles have not turned up in Rio. McCartney revealed yesterday that while she has been in Rio, her most important piece of equipment is yet to arrive. “We’ve been promised they’ll be here this morning,” the chirpy Auckland teenager said after another day of waiting when her poles failed to arrive on the plane they were expected on. I really wouldn’t want to turn up at the Olympics without my poles,” she said laughing.

Team Jolly on the charge Defending women’s 470 champions Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie have responded to adversity by powering into the lead in Rio. The Kiwi sailors produced a fourth and a race win in the second day of their class to forge a narrow advantage over Japan’s Ai Kondo Yoshida and Miho Yoshioka.

It was close to the perfect response from Aleh and Powrie, who suffered a major setback in the jury room late on Wednesday, when disqualified following a protest following an incident in race one.

Relegated from second to 10th overall, the Kiwis were again prominent in both races yesterday, finishing 50 seconds clear of the fleet in race four on Guanabara Bay. Sitting on six points, they lead Japan by two, with another three points back to three boats.

That group includes British pair Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark, who fought a terrific duel for gold with Aleh and Powrie four years ago.

The biggest movers on day four of the regatta were busy Nacra 17 pair Jason Saunders and Gemma Jones, who climbed from 13th to fourth.

After finishing outside the top eight in their first two races on Wednesday, Jones and Saunders were seventh, fifth, fourth and second to be on 27 points and 10 points behind co-leaders Australia and Great Britain.

Josh Junior also enjoyed his best day in the Finn class, improving five places to 15th overall courtesy of a fifth and a third.

Junior has four remaining races in which to qualify for the medal race in a class still being domi-

nated by British world champion Giles Scott.

Moving in the other direction was men’s 470 crew Paul SnowHansen and Dan Willcox, who slumped from third to 11th overall.

Poor starts proved costly as they placed 20th and 15th.

Rowers supply first gold medal New Zealand finally has its first gold medal of the Rio Olympics after Hamish Bond and Eric Murray remained untouchable in the men’s rowing pair.

After disappointments in rugby sevens and cycling, the first medal chance on the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon was converted into gold by Bond and Murray in yet another dominant performance.

It wasn’t the only medal of the morning.

Kiwi kayaker Luuka Jones produced a stunning performance in the women’s canoe slalom final to finish with a silver medal.

Jones was sitting in the gold medal position until the penulatimate rider beat her time but it is a great result for the Tauranga paddler.

New Zealand rowing crews put themselves into contention for further medals as the the men’s and women’s eight qualified for their finals, as did the women’s pair and lightweight double sculls.

However, it wasn’t all rosy on the water as the men’s lightweight coxless four – tipped as a medal chance – could only manage a fifth placing in their final.

Three crews also took part in B finals with the men’s double scull of Robbie Manson and Chris Harris finishing fifth in their consolation race while the men’s quadruple sculls and women’s double sculls both placed last.

There was more disappointment for Kiwi swimmer Lauren Boyle who fell short of making the 800m final.

The silver medallist at the world championships finished with the ninth best time, one spot short of the final.

Fellow Kiwi Emma Robinson produced the 16th best time.

Elsewhere, golf teed off for the first time at the Olympics since 1904 with Kiwis Danny Lee and Ryan Fox taking part in the four day stroke play event.

Danny Lee was the first to finish his opening round, carding an unspectacular round of 72, one over par.

ust when we thought this year’s local body elections were going to be a nonevent, the tide has turned and we’re now looking at elections for every issue.

And that’s a fantastic turnaround. It clearly shows that people do care about their district, what happens in that district, but they’re prepared to put their hands up and say they’re willing to be part of the tide of change that makes a difference.

What is really tough for those 40 people who are prepared to stand up and be counted, is that they’ll fight a good battle, but some will miss out when the final votes are counted. Each one of those candidates will have many good qualities and strengths that could add value to our district’s governance, but as with any democratic event, it’s up to the public to make their choice, And it’s good that there will be a choice for mayor. No matter who leads the district, no matter how good the job they do it’s good for democracy that they face a challenge for the job. At the last election there were three contenders for the mayoralty.

Those 40 candidates will now be mounting campaigns of varying intensity. Some will be content to keep a low profile and rely on posters and perhaps mailbox drops to get their message out; others will treat the campaign as a full-on job.

Getting their message out before ballot papers hit our mailboxes and we start ticking the boxes is their job. When the ballot papers arrive, the job becomes ours.

As long as we’ve done our homework and ensured our names are on the electoral roll, then we’ll receive our ballot papers in the mail.

Don’t put those papers on the shelf, in the fire or at the back of the kitchen drawer. Open the envelope and fill them in as soon as they land. Our job in the election process is to honour the efforts of those people who have been brave enough to stand by voting.

Ticking the boxes is our job, but voting isn’t about picking our friends; it’s about picking the people we believe have the most to offer as leaders of our district.

Could councillor Favel give us more figures relating to well water levels, say 100 years ago?

My family has farmed in the Hinds district for over 100 years and my grandparents would say there was no water for wells until the RDR and flood irrigation came in the ’30s.

Eighty per cent of water used for flooding would go into the ground and come up in wells for Ashburton and the coastal areas.

The Greens have been against flood irrigation for the last 20 years and now it is centre pivot wells that are

Could councillor Favel now start blaming the Greens instead of Lot 9.

Could they please tell us if the support they had from America, Australia and Britain was from three different sources, or from one source claiming support from these countries?

Thoughts of babushkas and wood shavings M

aybe because teachers tend to plan well in advance, a company that supplies schools with art supplies sent out a Christmas Craft 2016 catalogue for teachers to think about for end-of-year activities.

I thought that was a bit optimistic of them but whilst in the staffroom enjoying the warmth of an asthmatic heat pump that was probably built in some Eastern Soviet Bloc country, I happened to glance through said catalogue.

Well, what an abundance of uninspiring ideas and products this full colour, environmentallyunfriendly, 66-page glossy magazine turned out to be.

The original authors probably thought they were doing teachers a service by grouping together different materials and art supplies and suggesting ways in which they could be used for Christmas activities.

I beg to differ, because as I skimmed through I noted the company’s approach to craft activities was to supply products that were devoid of thinking on behalf of the child and ask them to merely complete some basic steps to end up with a cardboard wreath like every other child in the room.

So here are some of the more interesting products they are offering: Wooden Mobile Phone Holder – That’s right, nothing says Season’s Greetings more than a wooden phone holder. If only the inn keeper had one of these, he could have grabbed his phone when Joseph sent through his request for a room, using the well-known Judean booking app, Sandals and Donkeys – A Guide for Weary Pilgrims.

Imagine the learning that happens when a child in the classroom decorates one of these with Reindeer Stickers and at $29.40 for a pack of six, it’s a very cheap stocking filler.

Santa Wooden Babushka Dolls – Well deck the halls with boughs of holly, what an imaginative idea to use a treasured Russian folk design to represent a Turkish bishop (St Nicholas), named Sinterklaas by Dutch settlers in the US and later nicknamed Santa.

sure captures the essence of this special Christian time.

Terracotta Boomerangs – I wish I could take credit for this one, but no, this is not some hairbrained scheme I have dreamt up.

When the Three Wise Men were looking in Bethlehem’s Warehouse, I don’t know why they didn’t grab one of these for the little Baby Messiah. I’m sure boomerangs are in the Christmas story, right next to chocolate eggs and ashes and sackcloths.

Guaranteed Noah used one to herd the animals up the ramp into the Ark. Of course a terracotta boomerang is the gift that keeps on giving, going around and around the mistletoe until it shatters into a thousand glazed shards upon the eggnog bowl.

What hair-brained, sandalwearing woofter thought that Christmas at school could be enhanced by an afternoon of decorating clay boomerangs that little Billy is sure to hurl at his sister on the way home.

But wait there’s more …

The ultimate is surely to purchase The Natural Classroom Craft Kit, on special from $98 to $82.95. What a bargain price for these following goodies: large turkey feathers, matchsticks, wood wool (seriously this looked just like the wood shavings that come out from my chainsaw when I haven’t sharpened the chain), raffia, sea grass cord and half peg segments!

Seriously, you only get half peg segments, not the whole peg.

Oh the tragedy

when teacher’s-pet-Suzie is about to finish her Santa babushka doll with raffia and sea grass cord, and realises her Santa’s sleigh can only be made from matchsticks because the pegs in the Natural Classroom Craft Kit are only supplied in halves!

I can hear the carpark mafia putting together a formal complaint via the PTA to have the teacher-in-charge of art brought before the teachers’ council. This is 2016 people, our children need whole pegs if we are to have any chance of having every child meet National Standards.

That’s it, I’m going to raise this with Aunty Hekia, no wonder we have slipped in the PISA rankings, our children can’t do art with half peg segments!

Now I shall begin by offering her a koha – how about a terracotta boomerang?

Bomb terror in Thailand Bombs have rocked Thailand in a string of co-ordinated attacks over 24 hours that have killed at least three people and injured dozens more, some of them foreign tourists.

Tourists have been warned to exercise a “heightened caution” in the country and follow the advice of local authorities.

“The bombings have the same attack profile,” Army General Danai Kritmethavee told reporters yesterday.

“We believe at this time that this was a co-ordinated attack.

“At this time it would be irresponsible to comment on the motive, but we are investigating all possible leads.”

In the province Surat Thani one bomb exploded in front of the marine police office just after 8am local time, killing one person and injuring three, the Bangkok Post reported.

It is believed the explosive device was planted under a tree in front of the office.

Another bomb attack hit the tourist resort of Phuket around 9am.

Local media are reporting more explosions in the seaside resort of Hua Hin, less than 12 hours after a separate

Two bombs were set off in Thailand’s resort town of Hu Hin, killing one person and wounding 20 more. attack in the same city killed a woman and injured 20 more, including two British tourists.

The earlier attacks in Hua Hin occurred shortly before midnight on Thursday, killing

a Thai woman who was tending a food cart.

It’s believed the “twin bombs” were hidden in pot plants outside a bar about 50 metres apart and detonated

remotely by mobile phones.

Swedish officials to interview Assange Ecuador said it will let Swedish officials interview Julian Assange at its embassy in London, where the WikiLeaks founder has been sheltering since June 2012.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said a letter had been sent by the Ecuadoran Government to set up a meeting with Swedish officials at Quito’s embassy in London.

The meeting is to take place “in the coming weeks”, the statement said.

Prosecutors in Sweden want to interview Assange, 45, in connection with a 2010 rape allegation.

Authorities say the statute of limitations on the charges

The anti-secrecy campaigner, who denies the allegation, walked into Quito’s London embassy of his own free will four years ago, with Britain on the brink of sending him to Stockholm, and has not left since.

Last month a Swedish district court maintained a European arrest warrant against Assange, rejecting his lawyers’ request to have it lifted.

Ecuador in the past has said it does not want to interfere with Sweden’s rape investigation.

French mayor bans burkinis on beach The mayor of Cannes has banned the wearing of burkinis – full-body swimsuits – on the beaches of the French Riviera resort famous for its annual film festival.

Mayor David Lisnard signed off on the ruling that “access to beaches and for swimming is banned to anyone who does not have [bathing apparel] which respects good customs and secularism”, which

is a founding principle of the French republic.

“Beachwear which ostentatiously diplays religious affiliation, when France and places of worship are currently the target of terrorist attacks, is liable to create risks of disrupting public order (crowds, scuffles etc) which it is necessary to prevent,” the ruling says.

town, sought to clarify the ruling’s intent.

“We are not talking about banning the wearing of religious symbols on the beach, but ostentatious clothing which refers to an allegiance to terrorist movements which are at war with us,” he said.

The riviera city of Nice was the target of an attack on July 14, claimed by Isis, which killed 85 people when a truck

ploughed into seafront crowds celebrating the French national holiday.

On July 26 a priest was killed in his church in France by two attackers who had proclaimed their allegiance to Isis.

Islamic dress is a hot-button issue in France, where the fullface veil is banned in public places. But there is no ban on wearing religious symbols or clothing.

Star suspended after fight Criminal Minds star and former Dharma & Greg favourite Thomas Gibson has been suspended from his hit TV show for assaulting a writer. TMZ reports that Gibson, 54, was directing and acting in a scene a few weeks ago when he got into a creative dispute with one of the writers.

The website says Gibson “exploded in anger, kicking the writer in the leg”.The writer took the matter further and the network had no choice but to suspend Gibson, who has been away from set for two weeks already. Gibson told TMZ that he was sorry for the assault but says it was “in retaliation”.

LeBlanc may not be back Matt LeBlanc says he’s not sure whether he will be back for more Top Gear.

Speaking to TV critics at an annual summer event, LeBlanc said of returning to the heart-pumping car show, “I don’t know. I’d like to. There’s nothing officially happening yet. Police: 3 victims of serial killer shot sitting in car Two women and a 12-year-old girl who died in the deadliest attack in Phoenix’s first serial killer case in a decade were sitting in a car talking and listening to music when they were shot, according to police reports released yesterday.

Angela Rochelle Liner, Stefanie R. Ellis and Ellis’ daughter Maleah were shot on June 12 while the car was parked in a driveway, authorities said.

The gunman fired as many as eight shots from a handgun while standing on the passenger side of

the car then fled in another vehicle, the report states.

Police say the triple killing doesn’t appear to have been the result of a robbery because the attacker didn’t take purses or $2,900 in the possession of one of the adult victims.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Jonathan Howard said the shooting prompted investigators to look at whether it was tied to four earlier attacks.

In all, seven people have been killed and two others wounded in nine attacks in two predominant-

ly Hispanic neighbourhoods over a four-month period.

Police say the shootings are being carried out by a man who shoots victims from a car or briefly steps out to attack them at close range before driving away.

The suspect is believed to have used several vehicles.

Investigators have declined to reveal the evidence that led them to conclude the attacks are related and committed by the same killer.

No motive has been established.

Ellis, 33, was hospitalised for her injuries and later died. Liner,

31, and Ellis’ daughter Maleah died at the scene.

A witness told police that it wasn’t unusual for them to sit in a parked car listening to music.

Authorities also released a police report on a shooting that targeted an unoccupied pickup truck just a half-hour before the triple killing and is believed to have been the work of the serial killer.

Investigators found bullet casings and recovered a bullet from a seat and bullet fragments from the engine compartment.

Twenty-eight years in jail: Now witness says he lied Johnny Small was 16 years old when he watched his life evaporate.

What he must have felt in 1989 when the judge sentenced him to life and an additional 16 years in prison for the murder of 32-yearold Pam Dreher is unfathomable if Small was truly innocent which, to this day, he maintains that he was.

For the past 28 years, Small sat in prison while the life he could have led slipped slowly away. He cries when he thinks of his mother, who died in February after years of being too ill to make the trek to the prison.

He hadn’t seen her in six years.

After being repeated denied parole, Small had lost hope of ever leading a normal life. So much so, he contemplated suicide.

“I used to sit out in that yard, looking at that fence, just thinking of just climbing on up and making them shoot me off it,” he said, speaking of the prison yard.

In 2012, those dark thoughts were quelled by a spark of hope.

Trump: ‘Obama founded Isis’ Republican Donald Trump has described US President Barack Obama as the “founder” of the Islamic State group.

“They honour President Obama,” he told a rally in Florida on Thursday. “He is the founder of Isis [Islamic State].

Mr Trump also attacked his Democratic rival for the White House, Hillary Clinton, calling her a “co-founder”.

She responded by accusing him of “trash-talking” the US and echoing the talking points of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mr Trump stood by his remarks yesterday, using a sports phrase to say Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton were the Islamic State’s “most valuable players”.

The Republican presidential nominee has endured 10 days of negative headlines after a string of controversial comments.

Johnny Small David Bollinger, Small’s childhood friend who was the key witness against him in the 1988 trial, contacted the North Carolina Actual Innocence Commission with a shocking admission.

Bollinger said he lied on the stand in 1988, and he doesn’t think Small killed anyone.

The Commission’s director Chris Mumma filed a motion on Small’s behalf, seeking to have him exonerated.

On Monday, Wilmington, North Carolina, Superior Court judge W. Douglas Parsons held the first of several hearings this week which will consider the

motion. Monday was the first time Bollinger and Small faced each other since the trial in the late ’80s.

Bollinger was apologetic, as he told the judge that he lied back in 1988.

The two weren’t even together at the time of Dreher’s death, Bollinger said. Instead, he was driving his boss to an automobile auction in South Carolina.

He said that he lied because Wilmington Police Department detective James Lightner told him to and threatened to arrest him for murder if he didn’t co-operate. Bollinger said Lightner told him that he would be charged with Dreher’s murder and receive the death penalty.

Bollinger said he was naive about how the court system worked and believed Lightner.

“They questioned and interrogated me one night, and the rest of the time it was coaching – telling me what to say,” Bollinger said.

“I lied on him,” Bollinger said. “(The investigator) told me, if

I didn’t say (that Small did it), he was going to prosecute me for murder, and I would get the death penalty.”

“I’m sorry. I was forced to do something I didn’t want to do and I can’t take it back,” Bollinger said, looking at Small who raised his wrists, still handcuffed together, to dab tears from his eyes.

Bollinger said he told his grandfather, a former police officer and FBI agent, about the police forcing him to lie, but his grandfather encouraged him to stick to that story.

“He told me to go along with the story. He knew I would get into trouble, and he didn’t like Johnny,” Bollinger said.

Eventually, Small took the stand.

Small is a hulking figure, intimidating with his broad shoulders, shaved head and arms covered in prison tattoos – a sleeve on his right and an emblem on his left.

“I swear on my life I didn’t do it,” Small said.

Now, all he wants is a simple life – to fish, to be left alone. - AP

Fire in power station Fire crews were busy working to extinguish a blaze at a power plant along the St. Clair River, northeast of Detroit, where there were no reports of injuries. The fire was at the DTE Energy St. Clair Power Plant in East China Township after a coal-fired generation unit that produces electricity inside the facility caught fire, the utility said in a statement. “Employees were evacuated immediately and safely,” Firefighters from across St. Clair County were called to the plant as thick, billowing black and grey smoke rose from the burning structure. No residential evacuations were reported.

Smog alert unusual Authorities issued a pollution alert for the Mexican capital and surrounding suburbs yesterday after ozone levels reached more than 150 per cent of acceptable levels, something rarely seen during the summer rainy season.

The alert triggered a reduction in the number of automobiles allowed to circulate and also put restrictions on some commercial and industrial activities. The metropolitan Environmental Commission said in a statement posted online that a high-pressure system, weak surface winds and solar radiation were making it difficult for air contaminants to disperse.

Border to reopen Venezuela and Colombia have agreed to the gradual reopening of their border one year after the Venezuelan government closed crossings to crack down on smuggling. The announcement came after Presidents Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela and Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia met in the Venezuelan city of Puerto Ordaz. The two agreed to begin the process starting today. Officials will open five border checkpoints for pedestrians from 6am to 9pm each day. The weekend is sure to see a crush of Venezuelans flooding into Colombia to buy food and medicine.

Charges rejected A central Mississippi grand jury has chosen not to indict a mother whose toddler daughter died after being left in a hot car in May, a prosecutor said yesterday.

District Attorney Michael Guest said grand jurors in Madison County, just outside Jackson, heard testimony this week about the death of 2-year-old Carolyn Bryant and declined to bring charges against her mother, Amy Bryant of Brandon. Caroline Bryant was found dead May 11 in the back seat of her mother’s car after Amy Bryant forgot to drop her off that morning at a child care facility.

Chairman scoops prestigious award ATS chairman and Methven farmer Phil McKendry has claimed a first for the Ashburton based co-operative, being recognised for his contribution to the co-operative’s growth at the high profile Co-operative New Zealand awards this week.

The “outstanding co-operative contribution award” recognises an individual in a co-operative who has gone above and beyond to ensure the success of the cooperative model for their particular organisation.

ATS acting chief executive Robert Sharkie said staff at ATS were ebullient at McKendry’s award.

He said it reflected the significant time, effort and commitment their chairman had made overseeing the co-operative during one of its greatest periods of

change. “Phil has always been clear about ATS’s purpose, which is to lower costs for farmers and their families making everyday life easier for them.”

Sharkie said the challenge for ATS in recent years has been to remain relevant to a new generation of farmers, while also retaining the co-operative’s core values.

“It has been no easy task, and Phil put the challenge to his executive a few years ago to embrace the changes happening in the rural retail sector and grow the business, without losing sight of what we were.”

Net profit, which includes the reversal of a year-earlier $1.7 million loss related to inventory financing, was between $34 million and $35 million, up from $10.6 million the previous year, it said.

Synlait is on track to produce its largest profit since listing in 2013, even as dairy prices on the

GlobalDairyTrade auction remain depressed due to a global oversupply and weak demand.

More interest in RBNZ forecasts

T

he key piece of news for the week was the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s monetary policy statement that accompanied its decision to cut the official cash rate by 25 basis points.

The market was pricing this is in as a certainty, so there was no surprise when the OCR moved to 2.00 per cent, its lowest level ever.

The market was instead looking at the forecasts.

The RBNZ’s commentary again pointed out that the NZ dollar remains inappropriately high, and well above previous forecasts. The flow-on effects of a higher dollar are that exports are relatively more expensive while imports become cheaper, which in turn causes negative inflation for tradeables, making it near impossible for the RBNZ to reach inflation target objectives.

Following the announcement the NZ dollar actually gained further strength, the opposite effect to what one would expect from a rate cut, indicating that the market seemed unimpressed, and that it wanted more.

The other factor that is making things difficult for the RBNZ is the rampant housing market in New Zealand.

Despite new loan to value ratio restrictions, introduced in July, the housing market has continued to ramp up. RBNZ Governor Graeme Wheeler has said that the RBNZ is continuing to look into macro prudential tools that will be effective in cooling the housing market, so we will be watching for these in the near future.

The RBNZ also stated that the domestic economy continues to grow, supported by inward migration, construction activity, tourism, and accommodative monetary policy.

Again, it was highlighted that low dairy prices are causing slow downs in dairy reliant areas.

Global growth remains below long run averages, despite the unprecedented levels of monetary stimulus from central banks across the world.

The Australasian reporting season has started, albeit slowly this week, with a number of large companies from both the ASX200 and the NZX50 reporting. Expectations for the reporting season are that New Zealand companies are again likely to do better than Australian companies, as has been the case for the past few reporting seasons.

Defensive names should have solid results and positive outlook statements and New Zealand cyclicals to deliver positive earnings updates as the economic outlook has improved.

This reporting season will closely watched by investors as markets are at, or around, all time highs, indicating that valu-

ations are stretched. Investors are going to want to see a catalyst for these valuations by way of stronger earnings outlooks for the coming year.

Poor results and failure to deliver on expectations are likely to see share prices pummelled so there could be some volatility.

While the Australasian reporting season winds up the US reporting season has really started to wind down.

Leading up to the reporting season, expectations were low and most were expecting a disappointing earnings season across the board. However, things have been far more positive than this, with eight out of 10 sectors performing better than the market had expected in terms of earnings. The tech sector has been a stand out as the market expected earnings growth to be -5.30 per cent but in actual fact it has come in at 1.13 per cent.
