Students across New Zealand will enter a new world of distance learning on Wednesday when the second school term begins.

That new world, however, should not be about hunching over computers from 9am until 3pm, five days a week, says Ashburton College principal Ross Preece.

“We’ve put together a community mes-

sage for parents, students and the school community about what is expected from them around distance learning. We want to provide absolute clarity because there are all sorts of myths out there about what it might all look like.”

It was important in families where distance learning might be a problem because of other issues in the home, they should not push it, rather they should ease the

pressure and be as kind to one another as possible, Preece said.

“There are more important things at the moment such as the students’ and your own wellbeing.”

Teachers, like many in the community, were managing their own whanau and other commitments while doing their best to continue their work supporting learning programmes for as many students as pos-

sible, he said.

“Remote learning at this time is a solution to an emergency situation and will be a very simplified version of what usually happens at school.”

Confidence in support sector A new

There are hard times ahead, but Mid Canterbury agricultural companies are confident of bouncing back after the lockdown.

Supporting the essential service of agriculture, those managing to keep operating at some level while also retaining their staff include Pluck’s Engineering Limited at Rakaia.

Owner Neil Pluck said he was hopeful of a strong return to business if the lockdown went for no longer than its four-week minimum period.

He said he had managed to retain the jobs of all 14 staff, and breathed a huge sigh of relief once the government subsidy came through in order to help pay their wages. The business was following government advice to top up wages to 80 per cent while staff were not at work during the period.

He said the staff, including two apprentices, knew how to do things “the Pluck’s way”, and retaining them was a priority right from the start.

“You just don’t want to move anybody on. This too will come to pass, and then we will want those skills back, so we will do everything we can to keep everybody on the pay-roll,” Pluck said.

And for those workers, they have not been idle the whole time of the lockdown. It has been business as usual when it comes to callouts, supporting the essential service of the farming industry for equipment breakdowns.

However, keeping workers and the farmers in their bubbles, maintaining social distancing, is paramount.

And at Carrfields Limited based in Ashburton, the more than 500 people in New Zealand it employs remain in their jobs.

Group managing director Craig Carr said the majority of people across the country in the business had been able to work from home.

“And we are just looking forward to hopefully some reduction of the levels and on April 20 to confirm how long the lockdown will go,” Carr said.

Despite hard times ahead for the district and the country, Mid Canterbury’s strong agricultural base made it better placed than many regions. “A region like Canterbury, while there’s some pain we still have our wheels turning and we are going to come out of this better than most.”

ter Jacinda Ardern said Cabinet would decide on April 20 whether or not the level four restrictions would be extended beyond the current earliest possible enddate of April 22.

Meanwhile, Statistics NZ workforce data shows more than half of Ashburton’s workforce are deemed essential.

The percentage make-up of districts employed in an essential service are – Waimate 73.4 percent, Hurunui 67.8, Mackenzie, 56.7, Ashburton 56, Timaru, 54.1, Selwyn, 52.1, Waimakariri 42.2, Kaikoura 42 and Christchurch 35.5.

Real estate battle plays out in court

Two Ashburton real estate companies have faced off in court over the right – or not – to use a trading name.

When Clark McLeod established his new business last year he decided to use the name of an earlier firm founded by his father, Colin McLeod and fellow real estate agent John Hastings. The new company was to be called Hastings McLeod Real Estate.

That move resulted in Property Brokers seeking an injunction to stop McLeod using the trading name, pending a trial.

An interim injunction was issued by Justice Ed Wylie in the High Court in Timaru late last month giving McLeod 20 working days to change the company’s brand. This has now been done and it trades as McLeod Real Estate.

The issue has been about his company’s branding and the apparent effect on Property Brokers’ goodwill, McLeod said.

“This is an interim decision and all it says is Property Brokers has an argument to make.

I left Property Brokers because it changed from local ownership to a Palmerston North business. That was not consistent with my values. Our advice is that if we proceeded to

trial then we would be successful.”

McLeod said the name change and branding to McLeod Real Estate still reflected his family history and local ownership.

“The constant with the Hastings McLeod name has been over 45 years of McLeod family real estate and local ownership.”

After Colin McLeod’s death in 2002, three agents who were then working with the company – Paul Cunneen, Christopher Murdoch and Hamish Niles – and the manager of one of its branch offices, bought shares in the company.

That sale allowed McLeod a share buyback option. He began working for the company, then trading as HML Real Estate, in 2004 and actioned his share buyback in 2007, eventually owning 20 per cent of the company’s shares.

Property Brokers and Hastings McLeod Ltd entered into a franchise agreement in 2010, which included the right to operate a real estate agency under the business name ‘Hastings McLeod Limited trading as Property Brokers’.

In dispute between the two parties is the extent to which the Hastings McLeod name was used between January 2010 and August 2019 and whether any goodwill was attached

to the name by September/October 2019.

In July 2018 Property Brokers sought to buy the company, and while the other shareholders wanted to sell, McLeod did not. The offer was withdrawn, but the shareholders amended their constitution to allow 75 per cent shareholder approval for a sale. This was achieved in August 2019 for $4.5 million.

Judge Wylie noted that PBL undertook in the sale and purchase agreement not to use the name Hastings McLeod, which was part of a negotiating tactic to try and persuade McLeod to sell.

In issuing his interim injunction, Wylie said that, arguably in his view, the defendants’ actions were misleading and deceptive.

“On the face of it, they have adopted a business name belonging to PBL and they are representing to the public that their new business is a continuation of the business purchased by PB.” Property Brokers general manager Bill Highet said it had been regrettable the situation had to result in a court case.

The purchase of a real estate company was about the brand and the goodwill and that had to be protected, he said.

“We regret going to court was necessary to do this.”

The college realised that online access to learning might not be easy or possible for some students and they should contact their head of school if they had issues that hindered home learning, he said.

A list of students without devices has been compiled and forwarded to the Ministry of Education.

From Wednesday, learning will be supported by communication between teachers and students and/or caregivers via school channels; either Kamar or gmail.

Teachers would do their best to answer emails between 9am and 5pm and a 48-hour turnaround should be allowed for.

Where they are able to, teachers will contact students with subject specific information, Preece said.

If possible, senior students will have an online opportunity once a week to communicate face-toface with their teacher during one of their normally timetabled lesson times and students would need to check and respond to emails from their teachers.

Learning resources will be shared via usual channels such as google docs and gmail, Google classrooms or communities etc.

Junior students would be given weekly subject based learning tasks, learning resources will be shared via email and or google communities and or classrooms and students will need to check and respond to emails from their teachers.

Online learning was a new world the school and students would be navigating together and it was important students and their families did not feel stressed or pressured by this.

As the school community adjusted to the new way of learning, the most important things were still to be kind to one another and to be safe, Preece said.

Meals-on-wheels style service thriving

Meals on Wheels services in Mid Canterbury are continuing throughout the Covid-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown.

In Ashburton, a service is run out of Ashburton Hospital, while in Methven, a service is run out of the community-owned Methven House. And in the foothills, a privately-run service is thriving.

Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) commercial portfolio manager Rachel Cadle said meals for the Ashburton service were produced in-house by DHB staff and delivered by volunteers.

Some volunteer drivers were 70 or older so were not able to deliver meals, but there were still enough volunteers.

“Volunteer drivers are not delivering meals if they are unwell or have recently returned from overseas,” she said.

“Meals are delivered by knocking on the client’s door and leaving the meal in an easily accessible space by the door in order to adhere to physical distancing requirements. If the client is unable to come to the door and leave their door unlocked, the meal is left on a kitchen surface or dining table. In these instances volunteers remain at least two metres away from the client at all times.

“No new referrals are being accepted for those suspected of having Covid-19

or those who have recently returned from overseas.”

Meanwhile, Methven House confirmed it is also continuing with its service. And in the Mayfield, Mt Somers, Staveley and Methven areas, Foothills Catering has been running a meals-on-wheels style service since the start of this year.

Spokesperson Jo Murphy said the business had a variety of clients, many were older and relied on the meals supplied.

“We make approximately 100 meals per week in our registered kitchens. We cook to order and deliver fresh each Tuesday,” she said.

In the lockdown, she and business partner Maddy Brown were initially unsure where they stood and didn’t want to break the rules. They missed one week of delivery as they sorted clarification and the essential service paperwork.

They were grateful for the common sense approach of the CDHB, as well as Food Safety New Zealand which supported the business to become an essential service. They were also grateful for Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon advocating for them in seeing the need for the service, given its rural location and the lack of access clients had to supermarkets, while needing to stay in their bubble.

The business had modified its practises to ensure no contact ordering, payment and delivery.

Advertising, of course, takes various forms and this was obvious at the recent Age Concern Positive Ageing Expo.

Staged at the Hotel Ashburton, the expo was an excellent event at which many organisations promoted their activities.

The displays were all good and all attracted attention, the Bridge Club very cleverly had a continuous bridge game going on throughout the day.

A living advertisement, if you like.

But one which prompted one wit to remark “just as well the golf club aren’t trying the same kind of thing!”

And, just to finish, this advertisement for their annual fare appeared in a church bulletin: Ladies don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands.

rior to online sales platforms like TradeMe, newspaper columns, especially at weekends, were often chocca full with items for sale or wanted.

A subscriber, bereft of ideas for Christmas gifts, had a bright idea.

Our reader decided to scour the For Sale and Wanted columns in this very newspaper for inspiration.

While our reader neither saw anything which appealed or got any ideas, he was amused by three advertisements, two offering goods for sale and a wanted advert.

The first advertisement offered buyers the opportunity to purchase three things – possibly related – a waterbed, price $600, a wetsuit at $75 and flippers for $20.

By coincidence, in the wanted column that day someone was seeking a queen size bladder.

Hopefully this was prompted by a leaky waterbed rather than a major health issue.

The other for sale advertisement listed a camping porta potty, being sold on behalf of “one careful lady owner”.

We understand on good authority our reader couldn’t resist responding to that advertisement and being keen on motorsport asked “ever been raced or rallied?”

Bid to cut ECan rate rise

Mid Canterbury property owners might be in for a second wave of rates relief if Ian Mackenzie has his way.

The Environment Canterbury regional councillor believes the 10.5 per cent rate rise proposed in ECan’s annual plan is untenable for a region that will be battling economically as the full impact of the Covid-19 pandemic hits home.

ECan has already put its annual plan out for community consultation but Mackenzie said discussions on carving back that increase are ongoing.

The Ashburton District was not set to be as hard hit as some parts of the region as its proposed rate increase was between 3.5 per cent and 4 per cent, Mackenzie said.

“Regional councillors are now trying to reduce the overarching rate rise to about 2.5 per cent or the rate of inflation. This will involve a reduction in spending and if there is some change to what we’ve proposed already, we’ll have to go back out and consult again.”

Not all regional councillors supported cutting the rate rise, Mackenzie said, but he’s adding his weight to the call for a reduction.

Eiffelton farmer Ian Mackenzie has enhanced a natural wetland on his farm over 20 years.

The issue has been discussed, but there is not a consensus and discussions are ongoing, he said.

“This (Covid-19) will impact everyone. It’s stripped cash out

of individuals, business and government institutions’ pockets already. It’s a whole reset of the economy. I don’t know what this will look like, but it will be differ-

ent.”

The regional council meets on Thursday and the reset of rates will be on the table for a decision, Mackenzie said.

Police might be working to keep people complying with lockdown conditions, but they are seeing one positive with a decrease in crime.

Ashburton Sub-Area Supervisor Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said generally they are seeing a positive decrease across the board in areas such as burglary, general theft, serious assaults and road policing.

With officers out in the community doing patrols ensuring compliance with the lockdown conditions, they may be discouraging criminal behaviour.

“Of course we still encourage anyone that sees anything suspicious or a crime being committed to contact us on 111,” he said.

One commercial burglary that has taken place during the lockdown was at the Robert Harris Cafe.

“We received a report of a bur-

glary at the premise on Monday 6 April. It is thought to have occurred between 23 March and Monday, April 6,” Jenkins said.

“Some food and drink items were taken and police continue to investigate.”

With the long weekend under way, police are continuing to encourage people to stay at home.

“Police will be ramping up visibility in communities and on the roads including operating checkpoints over the Easter peri-

od, making sure people are safe and complying with the Covid-19 Alert Level 4 restrictions,” he said.

“Officers will be visible in our communities and on the roads, including around popular holiday spots, and on the arterial roads to them, to make sure people are aware of the requirement that everyone in New Zealand need to stay at their current place of residence while the Level 4 restrictions are in place.”

Scouts New Zealand last week launched its Scouting from Home programme and a website where families looking for activities for their young people during the Level 4 alert can sign up.

The programme is open to all New Zealand families.

Scouts New Zealand Programme Manager John Williams said the service is like a weekly food delivery service.

“Every week, a programme of activities will be delivered to everyone who signs up,” he said.

New Zealand has 18 new coronavirus cases yesterday, though grave fears remain for elderly residents at a rest home where there has been an outbreak.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield told reporters there are a total of 1330 cases. No more deaths have been reported since Saturday; the death toll remains at four. The source of the Covid-19 infection at the Rosewood rest home in Christchurch was still being investigated. There could be more deaths in the coming days from that rest home, Bloomfield said. ”We may well see further deaths over the coming days, I’ll just be honest with you about that.” Nationwide, 14 people remain in hospital, five of those are in intensive care units.

There are three streams of activity – personal, adventure and community – and three levels of difficulty – basic, moderate and advanced.

Activities include, for example, learning the New Zealand Sign Language and identifying ways to keep in contact with your community.

“There will be something in the programme for young people of all ages and abilities,” Williams said.

“And anyone with young people at home who need something to do is welcome to join us.”

Schools are being advised they could re-open to some students by April 29, if the lockdown is lifted on April 20. Education Minister Chris Hipkins said yesterday he wanted to keep expectations reasonable and stressed the decision would be based on public health advice. After the lockdown was lifted and New Zealand went back to level 3 it would take some time for schools to prepare for children to come back, he said.

Several schools have said they had been advised they could reopen on April 29. Hipkins did not deny that date was correct, but said some children might return to school before others; priority would be given to the children of essential workers.

A man in his 80s with Covid-19 who died in Wellington Hospital on Friday had a link to New Zealand’s largest cluster of cases, a wedding reception held in Bluff.

The man’s death was one of two announced on Saturday, bringing the country’s total coronavirusrelated deaths to four. On Saturday New Zealand’s director of public health Dr Caroline McElnay said the man’s infection was linked to an existing cluster that would not be identified for privacy reasons.

But yesterday director-general Dr Ashley Bloomfield named the Bluff wedding event, held on March 21, as the cluster involved. He did not say if the man had been a wedding guest.

with all services being cancelled due to Covid-19.

All but two members of the group have been taking part in the online session.

“They seem to be enjoying it, one girl even put her uniform on even though she didn’t need to.”

Girl Guiding NZ have also been putting out optional online challenges each week for the girls to complete.

Nearly 1000 motel units have been made available for the homeless community since the lockdown began. Minister for Housing Megan Woods said nearly 500 units were already filled and each unit could contain one person or a family. Government agencies were working very closely with iwi, community housing providers such as Housing First, Māori organisations, and local government to fill the remaining units, Woods said.

• Keep a 2-metre distance from people who are not part of your household.

• Gyms, swimming pools, and other gathering areas should be closed.

• If you need to touch a frequently used surface in a common area (such as a door handle, stair rail or lift button) use your elbow instead of fingers, or use disinfectant hand wipes after contact.

• If you need to use a lift, wait until it is empty and only enter with people from your household.

Ministry of Transport has confirmed that all expired WOF will be deemed current during Alert Level 4, due to the inability to obtain new WOF/COF during this period. Only essential vehicles will be inspected during Alert Level 4.

Preparations are well underway to support schools and students with distance-learning when Term 2 begins on Wednesday (15 April). Every learner in New Zealand will have at least one way to access education, even if they do not have a device or an internet connection at home.

Ministry of Education is working with telecommunications companies and internet service providers to connect as many households as it can, as quickly as possible. It is also working with schools to identify students who do not have a device at home. It will deliver as many devices and materials as possible, to students who will benefit the most.

Standing the test of time

ands, they come and go.

Popular one day then languishing in a $5 CD pile the next.

Few stand the test of the time, but one local band continues to prove to be just as robust at the machinery in its name – My Dad’s Tractor.

Born in the early 1990s, the four-piece ensemble continue to go strong to this day and there’s perhaps one pertinent fact behind their longevity.

They’re all related.

Lead singer, Brent Gray is a second cousin to the other three members of the band.

Brothers Chris Grieve (lead guitar) and Phil Grieve (drums) and bass guitarist Ted Grieve is a cousin to them all.

“We all grew up in the same neighbourhood, so that meant that along with being related, we were all good friends too,” Gray said.

“That really helped.”

With a group coming together, there needed to be a name and it was Chris who felt My Dad’s Tractor might just fit the bill due to the fact it had a nice rural feel to it.

Chris had been living and working in Timaru in the lead up to the band being formed.

“The band I was in there were really busy,” he said.

“Often we’d play up to three gigs a week and travel a great deal.”

Officially the drummer, Grieve, could put his hand to almost any musical instrument and that led to some entertaining moments.

“I remember we were performing at a gig in Wanaka and it was a dud, flat and boring, so to keep entertained while we were playing, we kept swapping instruments amongst ourselves.”

Eventually Grieve and his Timaru band mates parted company, actually by his own admission he was kicked out of the band.

“It all came to an end after we played at a Mongrel Mob national convention. That in itself wasn’t bad, but the guys wanted to go on and play for white supremist gangs and I wasn’t into that.

“They asked me to leave, so I did.”

After returning to Methven, a reunion of a school band featuring his brother and cousins resulted in the birth of My Dad’s Tractor.

There was only one glitch.

With Gray at the microphone, Phil on the drums and Chris shifting to lead guitar, they needed a bassist.

“I said to Ted, forget the guitar, man. You’re a bass player,” Chris said.

Problem solved.

With the band positions filled and a snazzy new name to market, the boys needed a gig to kickstart their careers and the

break came courtesy of a 21st in Samuels Bar in Methven, for Experience Mid Canterbury Board member, James Urquhart.

At the time the drinking age was still 20, so Phil and Ted experienced playing in a pub atmosphere for the first time when they weren’t old enough to drink and Gray said looking back he now realises how really young they were.

“Chris would have been around 20, I was 21 and Phil and Ted were still at school.”

The gig led to the popularity of the group growing and by winter that year they were flat out, with bookings flying in at local haunts such as Samuels and Vee Tees.

It also included a regular Tuesday night gig for Ski Flix which resulted in some late nights during the week for Gray who was working in a Christchurch Primary School.

He’d finish teaching for the day, drive via Lincoln to pick up Ted, play for the night and then do the whole thing in reverse, getting home around two or three in the morning.

“I’d go to work the next day trying not to look like I’d got home a few hours earlier.”

After years of playing together and being frequent fixtures around Mid Canterbury, there’s no surprise the group have plenty of fond and funny memories to look back on.

And one particular Mt Hutt staff party sticks firmly in the mind.

Gray remembers singing away before noticing that something didn’t sound right and looked behind to see Chris and Phil had both left the stage before turning around to find them on the dance floor breaking up a stoush.

Chris, however, remembers it a bit differently.

“Brent went to break up the fight before we did. But he kind of had to as he was wearing a bright yellow tee-shirt with security written in bold letters across the front of it.”

The band’s popularity led them to open for some New Zealand music legends over the years; Headless Chickens, Andrew Fagan of the Mockers, and a well-known Nelson band, Poppies.

Avalanche Bar in Methven was another frequently played at venue for the group – and perhaps a bit of a favourite.

“At the start of the night, Tony and Diz (bar owners) would set us up with a bar tab, which would often lead to us owing them money when the gig payment and the bar tab were divvied up at the end of the night,” Gray remembered.

Avalanche Bar also led to the growth of a love of tequila.

“Pete Wood would come down to Avalanche after Ski Time had closed and put tequila on the stage for us and a bucket of beers so that we would keep playing,” Chris

said. While the gig dates in the dairy may have reduced over the years, My Dad’s Tractor has never actually retired and there’s a strong rumour that an upcoming 50th birthday celebration at Samuels Bar, where it all again, may see the quartet back on stage.

“During many of the good times in Methven, My Dad’s Tractor was right there,” Chris said.

YOUR VIEW Letters with love There’s just no pleasing some people. For years I’ve wanted time to stay home and do what I want, no pressure, no rush. Well, here on Covid Island I can do just that and with the Government “Tourist” stay put incentive payment to boot. So now I’ve got just what I’ve dreamed about and I’m still complaining because I’m getting bored and can’t wait to get back to normal life – whatever the new normal might be.

Your father thinks he might leave the beard on once we leave Covid Island. He’s been preening himself, I suppose that’s what you call standing in front of the mirror running his fingers through it, says it makes him “more distinguished”...

Yuck!! It won’t be staying! He’s not getting on that plane until it’s shaved off, it looks like an old toilet cleaning brush, and his hair, that’s another matter entirely. It looks like he has had a fight with the vacuum cleaner.

Try a little kindness, it goes a long way

A

t times like these, it’s really the little things that matter.

When life is upside down and it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, those little moments of crazy, or light-heartedness are really what can help get you through.

There was plenty of that out and about on the weekend across the Ashburton District.

And it was so good to see.

Impromptu concerts on the street at various places around the district – including places like Coniston and Dame Lynda Topp and her wife Donna driving the streets of Methven blasting out tunes requested by residents on social media.

Or it could have been the scattering of makeshift Easter bunnies who were observed making their way up streets, keeping good safe distancing, but bringing some cheer to the young and old of our communities by delivering treats to the neighbourhood.

It’s moments like this that really make you appreciate the places you live and the people that you live aside and is just further evidence of the feel good spirit of a district like ours.

And we need more of those.

Of course, they need to be from people who are abiding by the current laws in place, but if it’s safe then the more of it the better.

It could be just a moment for your own little neighbourhood bubble or perhaps a small township, either way they’re great.

Speaking to a few different people over the weekend there’s a real sense of frustration starting to emerge. Cabin fever is starting to really kick in, probably not helped by the excellent weather, so moments like these where the new normal offers something a little bit different are welcomed with open arms. To those of you providing those moments, from everyone, thank you.

We really are all in this together.

Thought of the Day: Kindness is something anyone can give without losing anything themselves.

Brief relief By now isolation’s the norm. To some it will be quite a bore. For some, bill and coo, is all they will do. If there’s three there, then out will come four.

Our region well-placed to get through this crisis F

or me, Easter has always been an opportunity to spend time with my family.

This Easter, with the exception of essential workers, most families in Canterbury will already have spent a great deal more time together over the past few weeks than usual, which can bring with it challenges.

While we are all spending more time with the people in our immediate bubbles, we are however missing seeing our extended family members and friends.

In terms of bubbles, the Government has recently provided further clarification around this that may be helpful to some members of our communities.

For children in shared custody arrangements, these should continue, with the children moving between the two households as long as they are within the same region.

person living alone or with a small household for support. You must live in the same neighbourhood and not interact with anyone else.

As we adapt to the new normal, we are seeing all around us (albeit from a distance) the best of human nature.

People giving each other a wide berth on walks is now a sign of courtesy and care rather than rudeness.

Neighbours and family members are making sure our older folk have the supplies they need.

We are using technology to connect through video meetings and virtual catch-ups with our friends,

to do online work-outs and engage in online learning in a way we have never done before. And our internet and communications systems are generally holding up well, further reinforcing the value of our ultra-fast broadband programme.

Despite Parliament not operating normally we have developed what I believe is an effective system in the form of the Epidemic Response Committee which is meeting remotely to review the Government’s health and economic response to Covid-19.

The ability for the Opposition to ask questions of the Government and the opportunity for both Opposition MPs and Government Ministers to hear from experts is critical to ensuring New Zealand is responding in the best way we can to this crisis.

Although there have been some shortcomings in the distribution of flu vaccines and PPE, overall our health system appears to be moving at pace to gear up its capacity to manage the impacts of this virus.

While I do not underestimate the size of the challenges ahead of us I have confidence in our health system here in Canterbury and the effectiveness of our community networks to get us through this.

I also have confidence in the resilience and coping abilities of our region’s communities, businesses and families. We have dealt with the Canterbury earthquakes, droughts and fires and we will deal with this crisis.

■■ Turn out onto a well-floured bench. Dust with more flour and pat into a rough 4-5cm thick square. Cut into 9 squares and pat into bun shapes. Place on the prepared tray and bake for 20 minutes or until risen and cooked through.

■■ For the sugar syrup, mix the caster sugar and water together and boil for 1 minute. Brush over the hot scones to glaze.

■■ For the crosses, mix the icing sugar with the lemon juice to make a thin icing consistency.

When the scones have cooled, drizzle on in a cross shape.

Barrett was eyeing playoffs NZME Before the lockdown in New Zealand, when special events had real meaning and days of the week were individual entities rather than near carbon copies of each other, Beauden Barrett had marked out two in particular.

One was a first game in 10 years for his Coastal club in Taranaki, with brother Kane as coach and another, Blake, playing alongside him.

Barrett had planned on playing for Coastal against their nearest rivals Southern last weekend. It would have been a return to light up a province.

The other was his Blues debut.

It was supposed to be a late-afternoon Easter Saturday match at Eden Park against his former Hurricanes franchise and good mates such as TJ Perenara and Dane Coles, plus another brother, Jordie. That would have lit up a nation, if not the rugby world.

Instead, like the rest of us, the All Blacks playmaker is confined to his house (and in his case, trips to a local park for kicking practice) wondering when or if life will get back to normal.

In an interview with the NZME, he said that like us he’s glued to the daily updates of coronavirus infections and willing them to come down. Like us, he’s proud of New Zealand’s progress.

The All Blacks playmaker twice recognised as the best player in the world has never been one to take much notice of what the media is saying but that’s changed.

We’re all fans of graphs now, especially those featuring declining curves.

“Over the last month at least I’ve actually been following the media quite a bit because it’s obviously pretty serious and important to stay informed – you have to do the right things and so on,” he said.

“It is pleasing that the number is dropping pretty quickly. Obviously we got it in the nick of time so hopefully we can be out soon and start giving everyone what they want – to get back on the

Barrett is preparing as if his Blues debut will come sooner rather than later and that while two special occasions had passed everyone by, he said he had many reasons to be thankful, including his decision to re-sign with New Zealand Rugby for another four years rather than take up a lucrative contract overseas.

The United Kingdom and France, two of the European countries worst hit by the coronavirus, would have been leading contenders for his signature.

Most professional athletes are optimistic by nature and Barrett, who said he may still play for Coastal this year, is no exception.

of. That was going to be a pretty exciting game to play – with my brother as coach and another brother who would have been playing.

“You never know, I could still get one in this year.

“Any time an All Black returns and plays club rugby it’s good for the game.”

With Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern cautiously optimistic about New Zealand’s containment of Covid-19 and a potential relaxing of the national lockdown a fortnight away, Barrett’s Blues debut in what is likely to be a Kiwi-only Super competition may not be too far off.

It may not be against the Hurricanes at Eden Park and it almost certainly won’t be in front of a crowd, but Barrett, who hasn’t played a game since the World

Cup, will take what he can get.

He’s like most of us in that respect.

“I’m really looking forward to playing the first one and it doesn’t matter who it’s against,” he said.

“If it was the Hurricanes it would have killed two birds with one stone and it would probably be the best way to get over the whole thing. That time will come eventually.

“I think I’ll be in a good position to hit the ground running.

There’s nothing like playing for match fitness, particularly at test and Super Rugby level where the game is played at such a high pace. It will always take a couple of 80 minutes to really get up to full match fitness but a lot of my teammates are in that boat now.

Then there’s the mental side and decision-making side. I haven’t been put under pressure in a

game since the World Cup. “That can only be brought on through training which I had a taste of for the couple of weeks I trained with the Blues.

“Like a lot of Blues fans, I was getting really excited and already starting to think about playoffs and so on. Even the players were starting to realise their potential. They were showing a lot of self-belief and trust in each other and what Leon [MacDonald] and Tana [Umaga] were doing.”

The Blues had won four in a row when the season was halted after their 43-10 victory over the Lions at Eden Park on March 14, including a win over the Hurricanes in Wellington.

They may forever stay fourth on the 2020 table. But while Barrett has heard several theories about a domestic competition, “there’s probably no point over-thinking it and that’s the way I’m approaching it.

“I’m just staying ready physically and trying to stay calm mentally so that whenever the bosses decide what’s happening we’re ready to go and locked in. It’s easier said than done. Some people don’t cope well with uncertainty but for me, I’ve had a bit of time off and haven’t returned yet so I’m still in the same mode – I’m building.”

Barrett’s break after the World Cup bronze medal victory over Wales in Tokyo on November 1 was built into his contract in order to extend his All Black career to the next one in France in 2023.

He has another sabbatical clause to be taken by mutual agreement with New Zealand Rugby and told the Herald it was currently “business as usual”, hinting that he could forego it if he plays little rugby this year.

There’s no doubt though that he is pleased he stayed here with wife Hannah.

“I truly believe there’s no better place to play rugby… the quality of rugby is so good and when things go bad, pear-shaped, with a pandemic like this, there’s no better place, I believe, than New Zealand.”

With no live sport to watch, things are grim. We won’t hide from that.

But, to create some debate and discussion, members of the Guardian’s sporting nuts club Matt Markham Controversial, I know. A guy who rips off other commentators’ voices getting the top spot here might be a little cheeky, but so many sporting commentators over the years have had their profile raised by the work of Birmingham, who, if you’re not aware, is the man behind the hugely popular The 12th Man – it’s worth playing in the background during the lockdown.

From Richie Benaud and Bill Lawry and cricket through to Ray Warren and everything in between, he’s brilliant and could easily have stepped in to fill the void for anyone, had they become incapacitated and unable to do their role.

I’m a big Jeremy Coney man; the eloquence and the experience that comes through in his cricket commentary is, for me, second to none. A brilliant mind and a brilliant voice.

I’m over the moon to see some of the other lads including Mark McNamara in their lists. I’ve listened to a lot of races over my time and none do them better than him. His humour, quick wit and delivery make him a standout and it’s a shame New Zealand has lost his voice to Hong Kong.

Ray Warren gets a nod because there are no better rugby league commentators in my opinion, the voice is remarkable and it’s an easy one to do an impression of, which makes him all the more enjoyable.

And last, but certainly not least – Peter Montgomery – the voice of sailing. Those American Cup calls will forever remain in the minds of many New Zealanders.

Jaime Pitt-MacKay When it comes to capturing that iconic sporting moment in words, there are few better at it than football commentator Martin Tyler. One of, if not the most iconic football commentators ever, his calls of iconic moments are seared in the minds of many football fans. The most famous of those was when Sergio Aguero scored in the death for Manchester City against QPR to win the Premier League title on the final day of the season.

Grant Nisbett is the voice of New Zealand rugby, but has the ability to commentate just about anything and make it sound better. He brings the perfect balance of excitement and clear detail to what is going on.

It is shame that it seems we might not get to hear Bryan Waddle calling the next summer of cricket here in New Zealand on the wireless, because it is a

Steve Devereux I remember the very first time I heard this guy call a race, thinking ‘Hey, this fella has really got it’.

And Mark McNamara certainly had. When he left earlier this year, I just couldn’t believe he’d actually been here 10 years. While he was great at Riccarton, the Mot, Methven/ Ashburton/Timaru/Kaikoura, ok, everywhere, ‘home’ was Addington. His quirky, but always professional and accurate calling added incredible value to the product, and that included 10 superb New Zealand Cup calls.

Grant Nisbett has been the rock of Sky Sport commentating for many years now.

No matter which whizz-kid ex-players they try to groom for the job, Nisbo was always there with the calm, cool and collected comments, while all around him were going YES BOI at the top of their voices.

have decided to undertake a series of sporting discussions, which will run for as long as there are topics to list. Today we take a look at the men behind the microphones.

Jonathan Leask Ray “Rabbits” Warren is the voice of rugby league. It is his distinctive voice on the highlights reel in decades of State of Origin clashes, epic grand finals, and week-to-week NRL action.

Grant Nisbett has been the voice of over 250 All Black tests as the main voice of Sky’s rugby coverage for 20 years.

The late Martin Crowe was easily one of our greatest cricketers and offered superb insight and opinion on the mic.

His crowning glory was in the third ODI against Australia in Hamilton. Set 346/5 New Zealand was 44/4 and, on the ropes, but Craig McMillan’s 117 and Brendon McCullum’s 86 got us home.

But it was Crowe’s reaction to Adam Voges’ diving catch to dismiss Jimmy Franklin that remains one of the highlights – “Oh what a catch … stunner”.

Pat Summerall was the iconic voice of the NFL, alongside John Madden, from the 60s up until 2002, calling 16 Super Bowls as well as lending his voice to 26 Masters Tournaments and 21 US Tennis Opens.

While not quite the racing buff as some of my colleagues on this page, Mark McNamara’s race calls in my opinion are second to none.

job he does exceptionally well, and far better than the pack of average television cricket commentators.

Up until the past year a trip to a racetrack in Canterbury meant getting hear the great calls of Mark McNamara. There are many great race callers in the country, but Mark Mac, like the best drivers and jockeys, seemed to never get a call wrong and always had a funny quip ready for the finish.

Calling rugby league seems to be a tough job for the Fox Sports commentators we hear here in New Zealand, which makes State of Origin so much better when we get the dulcet tones of Ray Warren emanating from the television. The voice of rugby league for a long time, it’s hard to find a better league commentator.

Thousands of Kiwi blokes (and bloke-esses, I’m sure) have spent countless hours doing backyard stuff, while Bryan’s voice was there in the background, and whenever that voice went up a bit in tempo, a million tools were downed as a nation’s concentration turned to hear about a big wicket, or a century notched up.

Ray Warren has a bronze statue in his likeness standing in his hometown of Junee. Really? A statue for a sports commentator? Yes, really.

‘Rabbits’ is that good, and every league fan in Australasia knows it.

Way before Mark Mac turned up, Reon Murtha was the undisputed king of the ring in race-calling circles. He fulfilled a boyhood dream by calling a race in Reefton in 1960, and carried on for an amazing 47 years.

Adam Burns Weirdly this was very difficult to pare down to five. I took no joy from leaving the likes of Bill “Garryowen” McLaren, Ian Smith or the Quinnster out as they’re all heroes.

The late Richie Benaud’s lowkey observations and old-time charm made him the ultimate voice of cricket for years at Channel 9 and occasional stints in the UK. The only time I have ever heard him worked up was when he lambasted Greg Chappell at the end of Channel 9’s telecast following the under-arm incident. This icon status only grew thanks to Billy Birmingham’s note-perfect spoof series The 12th Man. The legendary John Motson is my favourite football caller, probably down to his thick accent. Puckett’s rise to the top on hold

What had promised to be a major year for rugby player Melanie Puckett has turned into a long road to recovery from a major knee injury.

With a spot booked at a Black Ferns camp in January of this year following strong peformances for the development XV in Fiji in November last year, her world came crashing down around her at the national sevens tournament where she was representing Canterbury.

Puckett ruptured her ACL, tore her MCL and miniscus capsule, suffered impaction injuries to both posterior corners of the knee, suffered a dinted femur bone and severe bone bruising when getting tackled in the semi-final by a Wellington player.

“I had come back from Fiji and only had two weeks until the sevens tournament and in hindsight I’d had a really big year and probably could’ve missed the sevens,” she said.

“It was the second day of the tournament and the semi-finals, and there was a bit of space so I decided to have a go and try and go around the outside of someone.

“I was isolated and came to a stop and halted, but all her momentum caught me and I felt the ACL go and everything went after that.”

After being carried off the pitch by the trainer, she was worried she had dislocated her knee and was afraid to look at it, asking good friend and Black Fern Grace Brooker if it looked okay.

Fortunately the knee was not dislocated, and the initial diagnosis from a doctor in hospital in Tauranga had Puckett’s hopes up.

“They must have had a busy day or something, the doctor came in and said the X-rays were all good and felt the ACL and said it was all good and that I might have a slight MCL strain and I’d be back in three weeks,” she said.

However, once she returned to Christchurch on crutches and visited her physio, the prognosis was worse.

“I’m lucky I’ve got a great physio and she felt it, but didn’t say at the time it was ruptured and wanted to wait until an MRI was done,” she said.

“She rang me and said: ‘I’m really sorry, do you want to hear all of it’, and I thought all of it?”

The 10-page MRI report revealed that Puckett had damaged and injured her

knee in just about every way possible.

Facing surgery to get the ruptured ACL repaired, Puckett had to wait six weeks for her knee to strengthen up enough for the operation to take place.

However, at her first meeting with her surgeon, she was still unable to bend her knee.

Despite efforts through physio to get the movement back in the knee, scar tissue had built up that made it impossible for her to bend the knee, which would need to be operated on before the ACL reconstruction could be done.

“Fortunately this one’s gone well and I’ve recovered but with everything going on (with the Covid-19 lockdown), I’m waiting for the next one,” she said.

Puckett is currently seeing out the lockdown on her family farm, keeping up with recovery work and other strength and conditioning and ball work.

“The initial plan was to be back playing in 2021, but that is going to be longer now,” she said.

While she has been denied the chance to involve herself in the Black Ferns environment at only age 20, Puckett knows she has time on her side.

“In Fiji the coaches were happy with how I had stepped up to playing at the international level,” she said.

“There were a couple from that team selected that were already on contracts and there were two spots at the camp in January up for grabs and I was lucky enough to be selected for one of them,” she said.

“When I felt it (her knee) go, it was all I was thinking about not being able to go to the camp.

“While I probably didn’t need to go and play sevens, I am only 20 and I’ve got plenty of time, though it has been hard seeing the girls go off to camp.”

With the third choice halfback spot up for grabs, one of the points the coaches had made was that they wanted to see her getting more game time there, which is always going to be tough playing behind Kendra Cocksedge, both provincially and internationally.

“With everything being put on hold it’s not a bad time to be injured because everyone else is in the same boat,” she said.

“I’m glad I’ve had good friends and family around me especially when I was pretty immobile and I’m glad to be back with family at the moment.”
