IN TODAY’S GUARDIAN
The youth crime wave will be the focus of a public meeting attended by Ministry of Justice officials in Ashburton next week. For the past 18 months police, security officers and residents have been dealing with escalating levels of youth offending, primarily centred on a particular group of teenagers as young as 13, who have been breaking into businesses, homes and vehicles. More recently members of the group have been sporting red colours in imitation of outlaw gangs and their anti-social behaviour has ramped up. They have been implicated in brawls and public intimidation. Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew said the matter had come to the attention of the Justice Ministry this week. Associate Justice Minister Mark Mitchell, whose dele-
gation is to review the Youth Action Plan, has been taking part in meetings focused on youth offending around the country. Goodhew spoke to Mitchell yesterday morning to flag current concerns within the Ashburton community. “He and I had a conversation about whether it would be useful to allow the people of Ashburton to talk about what’s been happening in that space,” she said. As a result a public meeting is planned to take place at the Hotel Ashburton on Thursday, starting at 1pm. “He (Mitchell) will be accompanied by other government officials who need to hear what’s been going on as well,” Goodhew said. The meeting will be open to all, however Goodhew particularly wants those people who have responded online to news stories about youth offending and to Dean Talbot’s letter to Parliament, recently printed in the Guardian, to take

the opportunity to make their voices heard. Business owners are also encouraged to attend and Goodhew anticipates police involvement. “I think this is the right place to vent about it so a minister who is part of the wider justice minister’s team can hear it and factor in what’s happening in Ashburton into Government thinking,” she said. Goodhew has also written to Principal Youth Court Judge John Walker, to ask him to look over the examples of public commentary on youth offending in the district. Labour police spokesperson Stuart Nash will also be in Ashburton on Thursday (April 20). Nash and Labour candidate for Rangitata Jo Luxton will host a meeting from 7pm at the MSA Card Room on Havelock Street, where youth offending is expected to come up.
