Dairy jobs drop in downturn BY SUSAN SANDYS

The dairy downturn is resulting in a tightening Mid Canterbury job market, as some staff are laid off and those leaving are not replaced. Ashburton Forks dairy farmer Graham Lowe is among dairy farmers who will be returning to the milking sheds this coming season, in order to save money. He said he had had to disestablish the position of lower order sharemilker on his 1100-cow farm. This would take effect on June 1, and he would be milking the cows himself instead. The sharemilker had been trying to find another job, but had been unsuccessful. “It’s never fun ruining people’s lives,
but I have got the banks breathing down my neck as well,” Mr Lowe said. Mr Lowe said a former farm manager would be filling the role of 2ic on the farm as of June 1, representative of a trend in the tight job market where managers used to earning $100,000 per annum were taking lower roles. Personnel Placements Ashburton branch manager Lisa Harcourt agreed higher-paid management roles were disappearing as farm owners picked up those jobs themselves. And when a farm manager job did come up, it was not uncommon to receive up to 100 applications. However, AgStaff operations manager Jim Henderson said while tightening of the job market had been noticeable, it was not “panic stations”.
Dairy farmers were becoming more choosy, and the skill level of applicants was higher; but as long as cows needed milking, staff would be required. Rooney Group general manager Colin Dixon said yesterday the company was not replacing about 10 workers it had lost through natural attrition over the past year. There had been less winter maintenance work on dairy farms for Rooney Group, which has bases throughout Waimate, Ashburton and Timaru. “There was very little last winter, and we expect very little this winter,” Mr Dixon said.
