Two weeks to go; campaigns firing BY COLIN WILLISCROFT

It’s less than two weeks to polling day and candidates for the Rangitata seat all remain positive as the business end of the campaign kicks in – with water, health and transport among key areas seen as important to voters. National Party candidate Andrew Falloon said he had knocked on nearly 5000 doors so far during his campaign and there were three topics that kept coming up. “There’s a huge amount of support for our youth justice policy, to intervene earlier with vulnerable families and give police and the courts more powers to
deal with wayward youth,” Falloon said. People were also excited about getting a four-lane highway between Ashburton and Timaru, he said. “It’s been talked about for years, and I’ve been pushing for it for a long time, so I’m thrilled a re-elected National government will deliver it. I’m disappointed that Labour have said they’d instead use the money for transport projects in Auckland. Mid Canterbury deserves its fair share.” The water royalty scheme being proposed by the Labour Party was the other subject that kept coming up, he said, and there was a lot of concern about what impact it would have on the region.

“It exempts major water users in urban areas, so it’s a tax on farming and would hit our region hard,” Falloon said, adding that 40 per cent of New Zealand’s irrigation happens in Mid Canterbury, which he said would equate to $40 to $80 million taken out of the local economy. Labour’s Jo Luxton said she was pleased with the reaction to her campaign. “Our campaign has been going really well. We have been getting a great response and feedback from people that we phone and door knock.”
