Tyson lost his cool in Toronto yesterday after CP24’s new anchor Nathan Downer asked about the former world heavyweight champion’s rape conviction. The 48-year-old was doing the interview to promote his one-man stage show Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth. The conversation – and Tyson’s language – went south when Downer hit a nerve by mentioning the ex-boxer’s rape conviction.

The day prior Tyson had met with Toronto’s controversial mayor Rob Ford, who is running for re-election.

Ford was embroiled in a substance abuse scandal last year when he admitted to smoking crack cocaine, but Tyson branded him “the best mayor in Toronto’s history”.

Ashburton stops to remember

In perfect spring weather, an estimated 1400 people marked the impact of one of Ashburton’s darkest days.

Young and old; people in wheelchairs and babies in prams – they gathered beside Baring Square to support those affected by the tragedy of the Winz shootings, in which Peggy Noble and Leigh Cleveland were killed and Lindy Curtis was seriously injured.

Many businesses closed their doors while East Street retailers provided flowers that deco-

rated a truck, parked across the street as an informal stage.

Work and Income staff and victims’ families were joined at the civic service by Prime Minister John Key and opposition leader David Cunliffe.

In ranks of blue, police and corrections staff removed their hats in unison and wiped their brows as they sweltered in 24degC heat.

Eleven days after the shootings it was clear that life, in some way, had changed for everyone in the Ashburton District, said Reverend David Brown.

“For some the future will be very different to what it would have been before this happened.

Nothing we can say will fill the hole in your hearts and in your lives.”

In coming together, the community was trying to understand how the act of one person could change the lives of so many, he said.

Ministry of Social Development chief executive Brendan Boyle said no words were big enough to respond to the enormity of the event.

“Leigh and Peggy were at work, being there for people in

need when they lost their lives … they will not be forgotten.

Mayor Angus McKay said the shootings had shaken Ashburton to the core but they did not define the town.

“We will never get over the shock of what happened in our community but we can start to move forward and once again be that safe place to live.”

Arowhenua representative Te Wera King, Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew, Pastor Rob Davison, Reverend Joan Clark and Captain Ken Smith also spoke.

Prayers and tributes were interspersed with songs by the

Ashburton College Phoenix Choir and waiata by the college’s Kapa Haka group. Olivia Brown sung the closing song and the national anthem was sung.

As people left the service, many were smiling.

The service, they said, was the perfect opportunity for people to show how much they cared.

Several said they felt better for having come, for being able to stand with their community.

“That’s Ashburton, it’s a great community to be part of,” one woman said.

Families ‘in lot of pain’

Prime Minister John Key said the families of the victims of Ashburton’s September 1 shooting were remaining strong and did not appear to be bitter.

Mr Key spoke with the families at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre before they attended yesterday’s Community Civic Service, and talked to media outside the event centre following the service.

He told a large contingent of media who had followed him to Ashburton from around the country that the families were “very strong, but obviously in a lot of pain”.

They felt they were getting all the support they required in terms of counselling and other services, and had bandied together.

They had mainly reflected with the Prime Minister on stories about their loved ones.

“There wasn’t a sense of bitterness although they are fully

entitled to feel that,” Mr Key said.

He said Winz staff would not be returning to the Cass Street office but would instead be moving to temporary premises, Mr Key was accompanied at the service by his wife Bronagh, and walked in alongside Opposition leader David Cunliffe.

They both took seats in the front row, Mr Key sitting between Mrs Key and Ashburton deputy mayor Darryl Nelson.

The service was a quiet moment on the campaign trail for the two leaders, who only the night before were attacking each other’s policies on TV3’s live leaders’ debate.

“I hope that today’s service helps in some small way to shine a little bit of light in the darkness of the shooting aftermath,” Mr Cunliffe told the Guardian after the service.

He spoke personally with families of the victims before talking to media.

Steve Gibson was noticeable for his absence, but Mr Cunliffe said that was because he had two prior commitments in Timaru.

However, he agreed he was distancing himself from Mr Gibson.

“I think you could put it that way,” Mr Cunliffe said.

“I have said that his comments were inappropriate and he does not have a future as a candidate with Labour.”

Mr Key was accompanied at his media stand-up by Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew, while she and Minister of Social Development Paula Bennett also attended the community service.

Following the service the Prime Minister found himself busy with Ashburton College kapa haka group members and others as people took photos of him and their friends, and there was even a couple of selfies.

“Good haka eh?” one man asked him.

“Yea, it was a great haka,” Mr Key said.

Ministry of Social Development chief executive Brendan Boyle says he is asking himself over and over what he could have done to prevent the tragic shootings in Ashburton’s Work and Income office.

Speaking at yesterday’s civic service of support for the families of Peggy Noble and Leigh Cleveland who died and Lindy Curtis who was seriously injured, Mr Boyle said he took the responsibility to learn from what had happened very seriously.

“I know others are doing the same thing and at times we feel as if we are searching in darkness. I’ve heard it said that it is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. We are looking for those points of light, those things we can learn from what has happened.”

Peggy and Leigh’s work was often difficult and always challenging as they helped New Zealanders to help themselves to be safe, strong and independent. They were at work, being there for people in need when they lost their lives. Lindy was there for people in need when she was shot, he said.

“People who do this work need to be safe. Their families should not have to fear that they will not return home at the end of the day.”

Every action that was taken to ensure future staff were safer in their workplace would be a tribute to Leigh and Peggy, he said.

“But while we look for lessons, we cannot ignore the darkness.

We must not hesitate to condemn utterly, the evil that oc-

curred in the Ashburton office that day. By seeking concrete actions for the future we honour the victims, and we push back the darkness.”

Like other Winz staff, Peggy and Leigh came to work each day prepared to face the whole range of New Zealanders who sought their support and services. And like other staff they worked the front desks with empathy, sympathy and commitment to people, Mr Boyle said.

Their workmates around New Zealand were now reflecting on what had happened and were putting aside their anger and shock to concentrate on what this meant for their relationship with clients, he said.

“We will not be less tolerant but we will be more willing clearly to say what cannot be tolerated. In that process we will begin to restore and renew trust.”

In honouring Peggy and Leigh and continuing to support Lindy as she made progress towards recovery from her injuries, Mr Boyle said his organisation would not be backing away from its commitment to serve New Zealanders.

“Leigh and Peggy and Lindy and all the others who have been hurt deserve that.”

‘Looking out for one another’

Yesterday’s civic service was held as a way to help the community grieve, show support for victims’ families and to start moving down the slow path to recovery, says Ashburton mayor Angus McKay. It was heartening to see such a large turnout of people who wanted to show their respects and to support the victims’ families and to support one another, he said.

While Ashburton would never get over the shock of the

September 1 shootings the community would move forward and it would once again become a safe place to live, Mrs McKay said.

Speaking at yesterday’s civic service to remember Peg Noble and Leigh Cleveland who were killed in the Ashburton Winz office and Lindy Curtis who was wounded, Mr McKay said people were there because they cared.

“We’re here to pay our respects, but most of all we’re here to stand strong, to be beside our friends, colleagues and

family as we start the healing process.”

The tragic shootings did not represent what or who the Ashburton community was; what defined a community was how it responded to a tragedy and Ashburton should be proud of the way it had responded, Mr McKay said.

“We have family supporting family, friends supporting friends and strangers supporting strangers.”

In Ashburton people normally felt safe in their homes, but on the day of the shootings there

was a strong feeling of fear throughout the district, he said.

“We’ll never get over the shock of what happened in our community but we can start to move forward and once again be that safe place to live.”

People who worked in the business of helping other people should not be discouraged by the Winz tragedy. They did a marvellous job every day of the week, every week of the year, Mr McKay said.

While Ashburton had a proud history of rallying to support its own in times of need, like

other modern communities, the district faced increasingly complex issues.

Its response was, that as well as the social services delivered across New Zealand, the district had its own range of community support systems available to anyone in need. And that was something to be proud of, Mr McKay said.

“The most important thing in this world is people, people, people and that is so true for us here today. Now, more than ever, we need to look out for one another.”

Rapist jailed for 15 years An 11-year-old girl abducted and raped by a Christchurch teenager threw herself from a moving car to escape, a court has heard.

Loburn man William Stewart, 19, was sentenced in the High Court at Christchurch yesterday to 15 years in prison, with a minimum term of eight years.

He earlier admitted to raping his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend near Christchurch Airport before kidnapping the 11-yearold hours later last October.

Name suppression for Stewart, who pleaded guilty to the charges last November, was lifted at sentencing today.

The court heard how his 11-year-old victim threw her-

self from a moving car to escape.

In sentencing, Justice Cameron Mander told the court her efforts to save herself had not saved her family from trauma.

Justice Mander said Stewart had an interest in extreme pornography that included children, rape and strangulation, which it was clear he had

acted out. Defence Counsel Liz Bulger had pushed for name suppression to prevent undue hardship to Stewart’s family.

But Justice Mander found that was outweighed by the need for open reporting.

The judge spared Stewart a sentence of preventive detention because of his age.

In brief Record opening looms Mt Hutt Ski Area is eyeing up a record. Yesterday marked its 31st open day in a row and if it can keep open for another week, it will surpass its own record for its most open days in succession. Mt Hutt’s operations manager James Urquhart said the record currently sat at 37 days without closing.

That was set two years ago, and matched again last year. Another seven days will make it three years in a row. “As long as it gets cold at night so the snow doesn’t melt we might get there,” Mr Urquhart said.

Mt Hutt closes for the season on October 12.

Mary Beran is living proof age isn’t a burden after the greatgrandmother helped stop a brazen shoplifter from leaving a clothing store. The 74-year-old and other elderly ladies have been described by a staff member at Miller’s clothing store in Hastings as “Ninja grannies” after they helped detain the thief. Ms Beran said the shoplifter caught her by surprise. She had just been “having a nosey” in the store when she found herself thrust into the role of granny vigilante. “It was quite an experience.”

A lack of snow on Mt Hutt’s race trails meant many international ski teams booked to train here this winter, went elsewhere.

Mt Hutt Ski Area operations manager James Urquhart said 2014 had been shaping up as a bumper season, with 11 of the world’s top skiing and snowboarding nations booking in their top skiers for weeks of training on Mt Hutt.

But due to the snow conditions, the only countries which ended up sending their A teams to Mt Hutt were Norway and Canada, who both sent their women’s alpine teams.

Other countries including America, Korea and Japan sent development teams and Paralympic athletes, but the likes of the American women’s A team went to Coronet Peak instead.

Norway’s team was the last to leave this week and although the snow might not have been the best, they reckon the weather was the best they’d seen and it allowed good, long days of solid training, Mr Urquhart said.

He said while the season had been good for regular skiers, it had not been a good one for ski

The honour was bestowed by Keep New Zealand Beautiful, which announced Dunedin had won the Beautiful Towns & Cities Award at an awards event held in Wellington last weekend. Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull said the award was “fantastic” for the city, but “just confirms what we all knew”.

On top of international teams changing venue, they’d had to cancel next week’s ANC Anzac Cup. “Due to a lack of snow we’ve really only had three or four races up here this season,” Mr Urquhart said.

That’s because the mountain’s race arena is not cov-

ered by snowmaking machines.

While snowmaking could boost the snow on the main trails, ensuring a good season for the average skier, the race lanes had struggled to get, and keep, snow.

“It’s been one of those seasons. If we had 15cm more snow we would have been right,” Mr Urquhart said.

He said it was also disappointing for Methven, and the town’s accommodators. When teams changed venue, accommodators lost a big booking and money spent went to places like Queenstown, instead of Methven.

But at least the top ski talent, and the money, was still coming to New Zealand.

He called him “Shylock” and a “nasty little creep” but Labour’s Rangitata candidate Steve Gibson was among those queuing to shake hands with John Key during the Prime Minister’s election trail walkabout in Timaru yesterday. “I was just passing by and happened to see him ... I’ve never seen John in person before. I just said hello to him, introduced myself and shook his hand.” Mr Gibson was reluctant to discuss his “Shylock” comment.

Thieves hit youth centre

Thousands of dollars was stolen from Base Youth Centre on Wednesday.

Fortunately, it was only Monopoly money, but the theft looked like meaning the youth centre was going to have to come up with some real money to buy some replacement play money.

That was until Ashburton McDonald’s came to the rescue – they had three of the plastic Eftpos type Monopoly cards that were stolen and were able to return them to Base co-ordinator Rebecca Soper yesterday.

Why did McDonald’s have them? Turns out there was a promotion running at McDonald’s on Wednesday where people could use Monopoly money to buy a small frozen Coke.

So, as Ms Soper described it, “a couple of little rat-bags” – who will not be welcome back at

Base – took the six cards for the centre’s electronic money game.

The cards are crucial to the electronic game. She went online and searched on the game’s maker, Hasbro’s, website to find out how she could get replacement cards so the kids could continue playing the game, and even tried Trade Me. But it was a post that she put on an Ashburton Facebook page which helped solve the mystery of the stolen cards.

It drew many responses, including one from the manager of Ashburton’s McDonald’s, saying they’d make sure the cards got back to Base.

Three were returned yesterday, but three were still outstanding, and Base would dearly love them returned.

Yesterday, kids were able to play the game again using the three returned cards and the fun will grow even more, if the remaining cards are returned.

Sex assault arrest A 19-year-old man has been arrested over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl in a park in Auckland’s Glen Innes.

The assault, reportedly involving two men, took place in Maybury Reserve about 9.30pm on July 27.

Auckland police said they had arrested a Glen Innes man. He was charged with assault and sexual violation by rape. Police said the man was remanded in custody and was scheduled to appear in court again today.

A young female school student was seriously assaulted while walking to school in Napier yesterday morning. Senior Sergeant Clint Adamson said the girl was attacked as she walked along Arnold St about 8.45am.

Police investigations regarding the assault are under way and further details will follow. Yesterday’s attack comes after the bashing of Hastings Intermediate School student Azaleas Quenton, 12, as he walked home with his bike on August 15. Azaleas was assaulted from behind in Akina Park and hit by an older boy as his head was smashed onto the handlebars of his bike before falling to the ground where five teens repeatedly kicked and stomped on him.

Toddlers benefit from pupils’ skills Ashburton Intermediate School pupils were giving handmade gifts to toddlers in their community yesterday.

The Year 8 food and fabric technology pupils were visiting Merle Leask Kindergarten.

It was one of several visits around the district.

Food and fabric technology teacher Bronwyn Hortin said the pupils were studying the topic Wellbeing- Hauora.

She said the pupils were given the task to make a personalised soft toy for a small child.

By the end of the topic, more than 60 toys would have been made and given to children.

“We went to two childcare facilities and interviewed a small person with a set of questions,” Ms Hortin said.

The questions were designed so the pupils made the toddler their ideal toy to their specifications.

The pupils then made patterns, chose fabric colours and put together a soft toy for the child. Some of the final products were delivered this week.

Longbeach School pupils supported the Camp Quality’s nationwide Odd Shoe Day appeal yesterday.

They were so keen to support the appeal, and with seniors off campus yesterday, they did it a day early. It was officially today.

Three men from Hinds Lions Club were also on site in their odd shoes.

Lions Club New Zealand was a sponsor of the camp.

The Hinds Lions trio were at the school to watch the children in an odd shoe day parade and collect donations.

The camp is for children living with cancer. It was held once a year at different locations throughout the country.

Longbeach School teacher Kelly Holden has volunteered to help at Camp Quality at Living Springs, near Lyttelton, in January. She was due to attend training shortly.

Ms Holden said during the week-long camp, volunteers were buddied up with a child.

There were around 80 volunteers and 55 children expected to attend in 2015.

Ms Holden was no stranger to the life changing effects of cancer; she lost her grandmother recently.

She was attracted to apply for a position as it was a good local charity and benefited a lot of children.

The camps get the children to complete challenges in a fun, friendly environment.

They allowed children to be kids, get a sense of normality and independence, and focus on the positive aspects of their lives.

he more than 1000 people who came together to remember the victims of the Winz shooting delivered a clear message of unity and compassion to families, a town – and a country – still hurting from an act of evil that remains too difficult to comprehend.

They came in their uniforms, their day-glow vests, their suits and their jeans; people from all walks of life and from all parts of our community there to stand beside the loved ones, friends and colleagues of three women a lone gunman so cruelly left for dead.

The sense of togetherness was palpable before the civic service began. Along East Street, small groups became bigger ones as people made their way to Baring Square. As they came together outside the clock tower, they united in muted contemplation.

Almost to a person, the crowd fell silent as the families and friends of the women who were shot made their way to their seats.

Liam Kennedy-Clark kept singing but, as clichéd as it is, the loudest sound from the crowd came from the birds in the blossom-filled trees.

Prime Minister John Key and opposition leader David Cunliffe walked together to where the families sat, sitting with them in a demonstration of shared purpose mirrored by the many public servants and people in uniform standing together, near the stage.

If there was imagery in many small moments at the service, there was more in the speeches delivered by the ministers and officials. They were there to share the feelings of so many – and they were there to demonstrate their community will support those who need it.

Since last Monday, we have heard a lot about the strength derived from togetherness and the role our community must play to help those affected, and itself.

This was re-stated yesterday, this time as a commitment to support the affected into the future.

The people at the service were there to remember the women killed. As they left, many understood that remembering also means not forgetting those who will need their support as they await justice.

What a great idea!

Ian Patterson the CEO of the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union ran this idea past me a couple of weeks ago.

A young rugby fan will join the Mid Canterbury rugby team for the day for each of the remaining home games.

They will get to hang out with the lads before the game as they prepare for the match ahead.

They will run the match ball out to the middle for kick-off and take their place on the bench with the reserves.

After the game they get to take some goodies home like a beanie, ball and drink bottle.

This week was the first week we called for nominations and we received over 80.

What a great response and I can only see it getting bigger each time we do this.

The first Hammer for the day is Jack Middleton, who is a mad-keen rugby player and fan.

While we are talking sports, I had an interesting talky bit topic this week regarding all sports moving to the new EA Networks Stadium and Pool complex.

Most people who responded seemed in favour of a community our size having some form of sports hub.

After looking through the feedback, my thoughts would be to leave the hockey turf and tennis centre where they are.

I really like club rugby being played at the club grounds as I’m sure this results in turnover for the clubs with players and spectators staying for a refreshment or two after the games.

I also like the idea of leaving club cricket on the domain and at the country club grounds.

I think all young Mid Canterbury cricketers need a trip to Lauriston under their belts as part of their tutelage.

But a purpose built rugby/ cricket ground for representative matches does appeal. Even though the domain oval has years of history and has hosted some super games in the past, it would be nice to play rep games on a ground where one of your major concerns as a fielding team isn’t the new ball getting wet after a trip into the surrounding duck pond.

Sure would be nice to see some first-class games back here in Mid Canterbury!

So yes I like the idea of a sports hub, but not ALL sports.

Ebola - we’re ready

By Ed Jackson Queensland Health officials say their infectious disease protocols have been proven effective after an Ebola virus scare on the Gold Coast.

A 27-year-old man was placed in isolation at Gold Coast University Hospital yesterday morning after reporting Ebolalike symptoms.

The man, named by News Corp Australia as Michael Walsh, was treated by paramedics at Southport watch house after informing police he felt ill.

Mr Walsh remained in isolation at the hospital as blood samples were analysed.

The results were expected “mid-evening”, health authorities said.

He had spent four hours in a cell at the watch house after being arrested for trespassing at Surfers Paradise, but had not told officers he was sick.

The patient complained of symptoms such as fever, and paramedics enacted infectious disease protocols after the man revealed he had returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo in central Africa two days earlier.

An outbreak of the fatal Ebo-

la virus in the West African nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria has killed more than 2200 people.

World health authorities are on alert, and Gold Coast University Hospital’s director of infectious diseases, Dr John Gerrard, says protocols have been put in place to deal with possible cases in Australia.

Dr Gerrard says anyone showing signs of fever or illness who had been in that region had to be considered a possible Ebola sufferer until cleared.

“We’ve been working on this in collaboration with both state and federal governments and with the state pathology service and we have established protocols for dealing with patients like this,” Dr Gerrard told reporters.

“The patient was managed in a textbook fashion and I think it’s a great credit to our staff as well as the ambulance officers in the way that they dealt with this patient.”

He said the illness was not easily transmitted and Australia was equipped to handle the problem more readily than in western Africa.

Queensland’s chief health officer, Dr Jeannette Young, agreed the chance of the man testing positive for Ebola was extremely low.

She admitted authorities were “playing a bit of catch-up” after

the story was widely reported before tests were carried out.

The department had received reports of people cancelling holidays to Queensland and even pulling their children out of school.

But Dr Young said fewer than 50 people returned to Queensland from West Africa each week.

“This (Ebola) is highly unlikely to come into Queensland.

If it were to, we’re prepared for it.”

Pistorius weeps as judge begins verdict “Blade Runner” Oscar Pistorius has wept in the dock as a judge began handing down her verdict on whether the star athlete was guilty of the Valentine’s Day murder of his model girlfriend.

Judge Thokozile Masipa yesterday moved swiftly into her assessment of the almost 40 witnesses, apparently rejecting state evidence that pointed to an argument between the couple.

“Neither the evidence of the loving relationship or a relationship turned sour can assist this court to determine whether the accused had the requisite intention to kill the deceased,” she said.

The judge also reviewed evidence by neighbours who testified of hearing shots and screams, saying many “had their facts wrong”.

She said huge media coverage of the case could have affected some witnesses.

“I am of the view that they failed to separate what they knew personally or what they heard from other people or what they gathered from the media,” she said.

Some interpreted her remarks as a blow for the prosecution, although she also cast doubt on the evidence of some defence witnesses.

And she said Pistorius himself in his evidence showed “a number of defences, or apparent defences”.

If found guilty of deliberately killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine’s Day 2013, he faces a life in South Africa’s infamously tough prisons and notoriety that would forever eclipse his sporting achievements.

Masipa restated the undisputed facts of the case - Pistorius killed the law graduate and model when he fired four shots through a locked toilet door in his upmarket Pretoria home.

The sprinter says he thought he was shooting at an intruder while Steenkamp was safely in bed. The prosecution says he killed her in a fit of rage after an argument.

The verdict is the climax of a six-month murder trial that has cast a harsh spotlight on

the fallen hero’s private life.

Full of high drama, the trial has fed intense media interest worldwide, with live broadcasts veering into the realm of TV reality shows.

During proceedings Pistorius has broken down, weeping and at times vomiting as he heard how the 29-year-old blonde’s head “exploded” like a watermelon under the impact of his hollow-point bullets.

Inside the court Pistorius’s sister and the implacable mother of the woman he killed looked on from the packed public gallery.

Prosecutors have described the double amputee as an egotistical liar obsessed with guns, fast cars and beautiful women, who refused to take responsibility for his actions.

The court heard transcripts of phone messages in which the pair argued, Steenkamp texting: “I’m scared of you sometimes, of how you snap at me.”

NSW ‘sexter’ jailed A magistrate has labelled a Sydney man “depraved” while jailing him for sending sexually explicit messages to nine women without their consent. Peter Lewis Sheather, 42, admitted to “sexting” the women using text messages, photographs and videos between December 2013 and April this year.

The Cammeray resident was charged with nine counts of using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend after police seized laptops from his home in late April.

In sentencing him to at least three years jail, Magistrate Roger Prowse said: “If you had to look up the word depraved, you would find an entry: Peter Sheather.”

Herbert found guilty Grant Herbert, the former owner and director of failed insurance broking firm Herbert Insurance Group, has been found guilty on 24 of 26 charges he was facing under the Crimes Act and Secret Commissions Act. The Auckland District Court heard that between 2005 and March 2011, Herbert failed to forward about $2.5 million of client premiums to insurers, diverting the money to meet his company’s operating expenses.

Some clients were left uninsured as a result. Herbert will be sentenced on October 16.

Locally, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand announced that the OCR would remain unchanged at 3.5 per cent.

This was not surprising to markets after Governor Graeme Wheeler commented in the last release that the economy needed time to digest the last four increases.

One of the most significant parts of the announcement was that forecasts for future increases were revised down 50 basis points.

Expectations are for the economy to grow at 3.7 per cent for 2014 supported by increasing construction activity, strength in consumption and business investment and positive net immigration.

Growth will be tempered by recent commodity price declines and continued adjustment to recent policy tightening.

The RBNZ acknowledged risks remain but expect further increases will be necessary to keep inflation in line. Analysts are now predicting that a further increase to the OCR is unlikely to happen before the middle of next year.

Apple hits business headlines olatility has been a key theme for markets this week with both share prices and economic data making their mark.

The UK is digesting the latest poll results for the Scottish independence vote which saw for the first time the proindependence camp beating the no’s.

The British pound dropped against all major trading partners and fell to a 10 month low during the week against the US dollar.

The highly anticipated arrival of Apple’s latest suite of products was unveiled this week.

The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus were launched with major aesthetic differences including curved edges and bigger screens.

Technically speaking, the new iPhone’s have a longer battery life as well as the new A8 processor, making them 25 per cent faster than the previous model.

The new software will include the Healthkit application which will monitor users health related information.

Apple also released a brand new product, the Apple Watch, a wearable device that is paired with an iPhone.

Plans for a $350 million runway extension for Wellington International Airport would provide the capital with between 16 and 33 extra flights a week by 2060, connecting the city to long-haul destinations in Asia and North America and increasing connections to Australia, says a longawaited report on the proposal from accounting firm EY. QUICK MEAL This is ideal as an entrée (one or two cannelloni per person) or as a main, depending on the size of your appetite! Dried cannelloni are a little fiddly to use, so we’ve used fresh lasagne pasta sheets.

They can be cut to size and they also cook through in a matter of minutes. Serves 4

1/2 C grated Parmesan ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Fry onion in a good splash of olive oil until soft and transparent. Add mince and brown well, ensuring that you break up any large pieces. Add garlic, tomatoes and dried herbs and stir well. Remove from heat and leave to cool.

■ Mix ricotta with the first measure of Parmesan and half of the fresh basil. Season with salt and pepper, then combine with cooled mince mixture. Oil a baking dish and take a few spoonfuls of mixture to dot around the baking dish.

■ Take a sheet of pasta and dot spoonfuls of the mixture along one edge, and roll over to form a loose tube shape. Place tube in the baking dish and repeat until all pasta sheets are used and baking dish is full.

■ If you have leftover mixture, keep it warm and use to line your plates when serving up, or if you’d rather not, simply spoon over the cannelloni in the baking dish. Brush cannelloni with olive oil and bake for 10–15 minutes until golden.

■ While baking cannelloni, make a light cheese sauce. In a pan melt butter, then stir in flour to make a paste. Add milk and stir with a whisk until well combined. Add cheese and stir over a gentle heat until sauce is thickened and smooth. If you’d like to thin the sauce a little, simply add a little more milk and stir until combined.

■ Serve cannelloni on individual plates, drizzled with cheese sauce and garnished with remaining fresh basil.

Debitsuccess expands Kiwi e-commerce firm Debitsuccess is expanding its payment solutions operation into the US, the company has announced. The international growth comes as the Aucklandbased business prepares to celebrate its 20 year anniversary, and caps off a busy 12 months for the company which acquired UK direct billing providers Harlands and DFC. Debitsuccess chief executive Craig Marshall said the move to establish a San Francisco operation will further build the company’s capability in offshore markets.

“We’ll be focused on replicating our successful Debitsuccess billing platform, servicing both the fitness and non-fitness sectors in America,” Marshall said.

The University of Canterbury said it will build the world’s first human colour x-ray scanner, with the help of a six-year, $12 million, government grant announced yesterday. Auckland and Waikato universities were the other big winners in the government’s latest round of science research funding.

Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce said $139 million over six years will be invested in 48 new science research programmes out of 208 applications.

Fusion sold to US Navman founder Sir Peter Maire’s Fusion Electronics has been sold to US navigation device giant Garmin. Maire is understood to be in Europe and could not be reached for comment yesterday, but Fusion Electronics chief executive Chris Baird confirmed the sale. Garmin reportedly paid around $20 million for the Auckland-based company, which produces audio systems for cars, campervans and boats.

Baird declined to comment on the sale price, saying: “That’s something that Garmin’s holding to themselves.” Fusion Electronics had been renamed Fusion Entertainment on July 1, he added.

Maire’s Tahia Investments held a 90 per cent stake in the audio electronics maker, while Baird and associated interests held an 8 per cent stake. Fusion Electronics was seeing strong sales growth and earning more than $30m in annual revenue, Maire said.

Investors backing jetpack Jetpack maker the Martin Aircraft Company says it has raised $6.5 million in a private capital raising ahead of its planned sharemarket listing.

The Christchurch-based company, which now has 125 shareholders on its register, had originally planned to raise just $5 million, but took $1.5 million in oversubscriptions in the pre-initial public offering (IPO) funding round, which closed one week ahead of schedule.

The cash was raised from sophisticated investors in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Asia, the firm said.

Reuben Buchanan, managing director of Sydney’s Axstra Capital, which managed the capital raising, said he was pleased with the result.

“This result gives us a strong indication of the positive investor interest for the Martin Jetpack story here in Australia,” Buchanan said.

“We can now focus our attention on the next step which, as previously foreshadowed, includes a possible IPO and listing of the company.”

The jetpack maker is looking to raise about $20 million through a stock exchange

Boks ‘ultimate foe’ The All Blacks have a higher winning percentage against the Springboks than they do the Wallabies, and yet it is the Boks who are viewed as the ultimate foe. Questions have been asked in the past few years about whether Australia are still a worthy adversary. Australia turn up and the All Blacks know if they play well, they will win. In their last 10 outings against the All Blacks, Australia have drawn twice and won once. The Boks have lost eight of their last 10 against the All Blacks - but somehow it is different.

The All Blacks have never lost their respect for South Africa: they have never believed they are facing anything other than a ruthless, supremely drilled opponent. All Black coach Steve Hansen made that clear yesterday. It’s obvious that within the All Black camp, the focus is more intense this week. The nerves are tingling and the players are aware they face their toughest 80 minutes of the season so far tomorrow night.

Hammers’ nemesis returns

Mid Canterbury meet their Heartland Rugby Championship rivals Wanganui in a crunch mid-season match at the Ashburton Showgrounds tomorrow.

Coming off a draw and a loss on the road the Hammers need to book four points at home, or risk falling behind in the race for the top four at the midway point of the competition.

Wanganui may not be seen as the dominant force they were, missing the top four for the first time last year, but they are coming off a confidence-building win over last year’s runners-up, North Otago.

They also have a habit of being a major thorn in Mid Canterbury’s side.

Last year was the first year Mid Canterbury hasn’t come across Wanganui and coincidently is the first time they have gone all the way to lifting the Meads Cup – with the rivalry built around Wanganui’s knack for knocking the Hammers over in the playoffs, five times times in seven appearances.

Their last regular season clash had Wanganui claim a 2423 win in round one in 2012 in Ashburton.

With some big matches to come, including against the currently unbeaten Buller next week, Mid Canterbury will be out to bank the four points.

Bailie eyes winners circle

Ashburton’s Bailie Perriton returns to Wakefield Park circuit for the fifth round of the Australasian Superbike Championship focused on building on the experience he gained in the first round of the championship.

Perriton is currently fourth on the overall standings but is hoping his experience racing at Wakefield back in round one in March serves him well in an effort to gain further podium finishes and even some race wins.

On the back of his first ever win in the Ninja FX300 class at the last round at Winton Motor Raceway, Perriton will be looking to use developments made on his bike at each event in an effort to return to the top of the field.

“I’m really looking forward to hitting the track at Wakefield Park this weekend,” Perriton said.

“We had a great result last time out at Winton where I took my first ever race win and another round podium so I’ll definitely be looking to continue that form into this round.

“I feel like we are making some great improvements with the bike every time we are on track so hopefully we can make the most of those developments and return to the winners circle.”

The fifth round of the Benchmark Elite Cycling series rolls into Nelson for the Tasman Classic tomorrow.

An exciting battle is anticipated with a number of riders still in contention for overalls series honours and the circuit has a number of climbs, rolling terrain and fast flats that will provide a stern test for riders. Elite men’s leaders Brad Evans (Team Calder Stewart), Dan Barry and Cameron Karwowski are not racing, opening the way for last round’s winner and third placed rider Jason Allen (Scotty Browns Racing) to make a move to the top of the points table. Women’s leader, Elyse Fraser, is locked in a battle with her Benchmark Homes team-mate Sharlotte Lucas and Nelson’s Karen Fulton with only eight points separating them. The series concludes with the Team Time Trial and the Hell of the South, that features a number of gravel sections, around the Selwyn District on October 4.

One more title?

Bailie Perriton will be looking to back up from his first win at Winton and return to the podium this weekend at Wakefield Park.

After extensive preparation in the lead up to this weekend, Perriton is looking forward to getting back on the bike and returning to the Championship battle.

“The Wakefield Park circuit is a technical one but I am feeling a lot better going into this

event, knowing that I don’t have to learn a new track as I have done in the first four rounds of the series.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in the lead up to this weekend familiarising myself with the layout and my setups so I can’t wait to hit the track.”

Ashburton will be flooded with footballers tomorrow.

Over 500 junior footballers will be in action in the annual pre-South Island tournament featuring 10th grade up to 16th

grade boys’ and girls’ matches at both the Ashburton Domain and Argyle Park.

A selection of teams from North Otago, West Coast, South Canterbury, Selwyn, and North Canterbury join hosts Mid Canterbury as they have a last hit-

out ahead of the South Island tournaments in the school holidays.

The 10th and 11th grade boys’ Jack McKnight Bowerwater Football Tournament in Nelson is first up, starting September 28.

The 14th grade boys’ tournament is being held in Dunedin and the girls are in Christchurch, while Methven hosts the under 17 girls, all from October 7.

Starting on October 9, 12th grade boys and girls are in

Blenheim, 13th grade boys will be in Queenstown and the 15th and 16th grade boys travel to Timaru.

Tomorrow’s action gets under way from 9am, with games up until 5pm for a full day of football.
