A new goodwill agreement has been reached between Talley’s Group Ltd Ashburton and Fairton School. Big trucks and schoolchildren share the road safely at Fairton. The students arrive at school on foot, on scooters, by bike or in cars and often share Fairfield Road with heavy trucks and trailers leaving or going to Talley’s nearby vegetable processing plant. The two parties signed a goodwill agreement at the weekend aimed at keeping everyone safe. A formal framed copy of the deal was handed over to Fairton School principal Rebekah Clement. Talley’s group freight and logistics manager Aaron Chudleigh said the deal was brokered by Simon Carson from Road Transport Association New Zealand and the bottom line was “working together for safety”.
He said only one other agreement existed, between North Canterbury’s Woodend Primary School and transport operators taking refuse to the Kate Valley landfill. Chudleigh said at least 20 heavy trucks were based at Talley’s Ashburton plant and they regularly passed by the school, as well as other company vehicles. While the drivers obeyed the speed limit, they were extra careful around the school, mindful that a child could run out on the road in front of their vehicle. The modern vehicles were equipped with the latest braking technology. Chudleigh said Talley’s trucks were also fitted with GPS technology that monitored the speed of its vehicles and
the company was serious about road safety. The road safety agreement with Fairton School is reciprocal: The school community is able to complain about unsafe driving, and drivers are also able to report students acting dangerously on the road or pedestrian crossing. Chudleigh said the company and the school had enjoyed a happy and safe existence and the new road safety agreement was formal recognition. The framed copy was handed over at a driver education session run by Talley’s for 35 of its drivers on Saturday. The session covered drug education and how to prevent laden trucks and trailers rolling over.
