The Ashburton District Council could be looking at a $300,000 budget blow-out in the mop-up from this winter’s heavy rain.

And as wet conditions continue to be a feature of spring, the size of the problems plaguing the district’s roads continues to grow, said roading manager Brian Fauth.

The massive July rainfalls and on-

going periods of persistent rain meant council staff and contractors were now well behind schedule when it came to repairing the district’s roads, he said.

“There are still a lot of potholes to repair and the continuing wet means we can’t get this work done, but traffic continuing to drive over them makes them worse and we’re getting broken edge seal and then it’s not a pothole fix. It becomes a dig out and that’s a much bigger job.”

The floodwater that no one owns

A dispute is brewing over the ownership of a Methven creek that yesterday caused floodwater to race down a rural road, threatening properties and scouring road surfaces.

Dry Creek, that has its origins above the Rangitata Diversion Race on Mt Hutt Station Road, yesterday turned the Methven Barrhill Chertsey Road into a flood course forcing the Ashburton District Council to call in its contractor Fulton Hogan to clear shingleblocked culverts.

But that doesn’t mean the council is accepting ownership for the creek. The council says it belongs to Environment Canterbury and it’s their job to keep it clear.

ECan accepts ownership of part of the drain, but not the bit that’s causing the flooding, however.

When the council started fielding calls about the flooded road, it decided rather than debate ownership, it needed to get the water flowing while it figured out who was actually responsible for the flooding.

Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann admitted that ownership of the creek was a complex issue.

drain but so too does the council, with private landowners also in the mix.

work on its section of the creek and that’s where its responsibility ends says ECan Ashburton water zone spokeswoman Janine Holland.

sponsibility for maintenance lies elsewhere, she said.

While the Ashburton council picks up responsibility from that point, for much of its distance the creek runs through private property and keeping it clear and flowing becomes the landowners’ responsibility, Holland said.

“If they can see there’s a build up of gravel or other material, then it’s their responsibility for its removal.”

While the district council took matters into its own hands and cleared the blocked culverts, who paid would be sorted out later, McCann said.

The upshot of the debate over ownership is that both councils will get together next week to clarify the ownership of the numerous creeks and drains that flow across the district.

Yesterday’s floodwaters, however, simply added to the district council’s repair problems.

The road was already severely damaged by ongoing heavy rain, with what started out as potholes now becoming major repair jobs as road surfaces disintegrate.

The repair work was an exercise in frustration for contractors as the problem was not just within the Ashburton District, it was across the country and that meant it was difficult to find extra staff to speed up the work, he said.

There was a long list of roads

around the district where there were significant areas that were potholed and where seal was now breaking away, Fauth said.

“We need to get onto these before the damage becomes major and the public can help by driving around the problem situations on the roads rather than driving through them.

“We just need a little bit of driver awareness and an understanding that it’s not business as usual out there.”

Right – It might be a source of huge frustration to motorists using the Methven Chertsey Road, but they are not alone in experiencing roads with potholes and edge seal breaks as continuing wet weather makes it difficult for repair crews to complete the network of issues created by heavy winter rain.

Local lads to don stilettos for school

Ten local lads are getting ready to put their egos aside, don their tallest stilettos and put their bodies on the line for the Ms Methven beauty pageant.

The men gathered for their first dress rehearsal on Tuesday, before the big night on October 28.

The pageant is being held as a fundraiser for Our Lady of the Snows School, and sold out in six minutes in August. It will see the contestants modelling day wear, swimwear and evening wear, and dancing to their favourite songs.

When asked what made them apply for the competition, the men had mixed answers.

“I was approached when I was feeling weak and distracted,” said Ethan Roberst aka Ms Star Brights.

Tom Plunkett aka Ms Dubliner said “a moment of weakness” led him to the pageant.

James Wasley aka Ms Supervalue said “My bosses said I would lose my job if I didn’t agree.”

“It’s for a great cause though, and they’re a great bunch of chicks.”

With just over two weeks to go, the men are doing all they can to prepare. For some, this means frantic googling, others – the 5:2 diet and lemon juice cleanses – and others, staying in denial.

“I have just been blocking the

whole things from my mind,” said Simon O’Reilly aka Ms Proseeds.

Each believe they have a unique strongest asset – for Roberts, his ability to cartwheel, for Brenton Connell aka Ms Richards Machinery, his booty, and for Plunkett, the

chest he “recently purchased on the internet”.

The men say their biggest challenges include dancing, stage fright and “holding back on the liquid”.

But the positivity is also clear.

“This is the best team building event I have ever attended. They are like my brothers now,” said Plunkett.

“I mean sisters.”

The evening will be compared

by Marya Trengrove of Primo e Secundo and Richie Owen of Mt Hutt.

A raffle and auction prizes will also be up for grabs – including a painting by an ex Our Lady of the Snows student, a ride in a groomer at Mt Hutt, a Dallas Harlequins jersey, and a 2018 package for two to the World of Wearable Arts in Wellington.

“We are very grateful and slightly blown away by all of the support we have received,” said Our Lady of the Snows Board chairwoman Deidra O’Shea.

“For a little school this is a huge event and all funds raised will have a significant impact on the children at our school.”

American interior designers have elevated Carrfields New Zealand wool to artwork in a recent rug design competition in San Francisco.

US company Carlisle, which distributes Carrfields Primary Wool’s (CP Wool) range of New Zealand wool carpets and rugs in North America under the Just Shorn brand, invited designers from the San Francisco Bay Area to submit their designs for rugs that could be crafted from 100 per cent Just Shorn New Zealand wool.

Colin McKenzie, CP Wool Group chief executive, said the results were “stunning”.

“The winning design can easily be described as a work of art for floors. We’re immensely proud that our New Zealand-grown yarn will be used to craft such a beautiful piece. All the submissions were stunning, and the competition

was a great success when you consider the profile it gives New Zealand wool as a premium option for soft flooring among US interior designers.”

The winner will be featured in an upcoming issue of California Home + Design magazine, as well as on Carlisle’s website. The rug will also be added to Carlisle’s retail collection.

Americans have been slow adopters of wool carpets into homes, so working with companies like Carlisle is important to develop new markets, Ashburtonbased Carrfields managing director Greg Carr said.

“It’s critical that we partner with the best, targeting the very top end of the residential flooring market.

Rural pool change delights communities

Commonsense has ruled the day and five of Ashburton’s rural communities are celebrating.

Earlier this week those communities were looking at a summer where their local swimming pool was likely to remain closed, but a backdown on a new rules regime by the Ashburton District Council means the pool committees are now planning for a business as usual summer.

The pools at Hinds, Rakaia, Mt Somers, Ruapuna and Mayfield are built on council owned land and that means the council is required to take all reasonable steps to ensure health and safety requirements are met. Council staff had met on several occasions with pool committees to discuss those requirements, but when final recommendations were made they were so tight the pool committees said they were impossible to meet.

On Tuesday district councillors decided to back down and take a softer approach and that’s been hailed as a big win for the small communities.

Councillor Peter Reveley went in to bat for the rural communities saying it was very clear that if council had stuck with its recommendation on trained pool supervisors and set opening hours, the five pools would have been out of business.

Three of those pools are in his western ward and he said the loss of swimming pools would have hit those communities hard. The council made the right decision in backing down on making trained pool supervisors mandatory, he said.

For Mayfield the outcome of the proposed regime was clear cut, said

pool committee chairman Gerald Jacobsen.

“This had to happen or we’d have been closed and that would have been a huge loss,” he said.

And closure of the Mayfield pool would have hit more than casual swimmers, the village school also uses the pool for swimming lessons and for school sports.

With a pool that opened for about 70 hours a week it would have been impossible to find enough people who were prepared to do the supervisor’s job, he said.

His committee had been holding off pre-season preparations while health and safety requirements were sorted out but would now be swinging into action so the pool could open on time.

Ruapuna is the district’s most remote pool and it provides a community facility that’s well used, said committee chairman Duncan King.

He believes the drive for pools to have trained supervisors was another way of achieving closure.

“The council said they never wanted to close the pools but this was a way of making it so difficult for us that we’d decide to close,” he said.

“What they were trying to do was madness. A small community like ours was never going to be able to do what they wanted.”

High diving boards at Rakaia and Hinds were initially tagged for decommissioning but councillors have now backed down on this option too, deciding instead to assess pool depths to determine if the diving platforms are safe to use.

If pool committees decide they need trained supervisors, the council will now provide and fund this training and it will also cover the costs of microbiological water testing.

Corwar Lodge caretaking deal signed

An historic cottage that is a reminder of the Barrhill area’s past has now officially moved under the Ashburton District Council’s management umbrella.

The Gatekeepers Lodge fronting the Rakaia Barhill Methven Road was built in the 1870s by the original owner of the farm, John Cathcart Wason.

He owned 20,000 acres of land on the south Bank of the Rakaia River and established the Barrhill Village.

The lodge was built to house the gatekeeper’s family. It is just 46 square metres in size and is divided into four rooms with a central fireplace.

Its walls are built of concrete,

30cm thick and it originally had a slate tile roof. This was later replaced with iron.

The lodge is listed as a Category A building under the operative Ashburton District Plan giving it national significance.

It is not, however, currently listed under the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

A restoration project was started on the lodge in the early 1970s and the Corwar Lodge Preservation Society was formed.

The lodge opened for visitors in March 1979 and since then a team of volunteers has maintained the lodge and taken guided tours through its rooms and grounds.

During MP Colin

McLauchlan’s ownership of Corwar the lodge and a small area of land were vested with the Ashburton County Council.

This vestment was then transferred to the Ashburton District Council with its commercial team undertaking some work on its grounds and on the building itself.

This week the council decided to enter into a formal agreement with the lodge’s preservation society to set out areas of responsibility.

The society will be responsible for day-to-day management of the site and, with the assistance of the council’s commercial team, will establish an annual maintenance schedule and budget.

Staying put come hell or high water

When it comes to tenacity and determination to breed, Ashburton’s black billed gull must be one of New Zealand’s toughest birds.

This year the endangered species has been forced to deal with a traditional nesting ground that has been hit by unusually high water as the Ashburton River has experienced several peak flows that have destroyed nests and covered breeding grounds.

Undeterred, the birds have simply relocated and there is now a colony of more than 1000 established at the river mouth starting the breeding process again, said local bird enthusiast Edith Smith.

“It’s been quite remarkable this year, not a good year for them, but they’ve evolved with nature doing this. We can’t really do a lot for them, we just have to sit back and let nature take its course,” she said.

While the rest of their group have relocated, a handful of gulls have dug in for the long term, Smith said, and are still sitting on nests that are clinging to the water’s edge.

sonably high shingle area at the mouth for its next attempt, she said.

“I’m pleased they’ve stayed

within the Ashburton River; a few years ago when there was a flood they left and went to the Rangitata.”

Coalition decision expected soon Negotiations between NZ First and National have reached a crucial stage, considering new issues and going over old ground.

Day four of talks yesterday kicked off with another two-and-a-half hour meeting between kingmaker Winston Peters and National leader Bill English.

Peters emerged from the meeting hinting that on certain issues no one party’s policy might win out over another.

“We’re making huge progress finding out what we agree on, what we don’t agree on, what we can still negotiate on, where it might take things in the future by cooperation so at the end you may not have their decision or our decision on policy but a mutual decision,” he said.

Labour was up next in talks yesterday afternoon, once again representing the Green party who won’t have a physical presence in the meeting room.

There’s still no indication either on when a decision might be revealed publicly.

Peters said last Thursday he was pushing out his deadline for the announcement, only saying it would be made “as soon as

possible after Thursday night”.

He expects the party’s decision to be reached tonight but said there were other arrangements and people to organise, an apparent reference to his party’s board’s ratification of a decision.

Both the main parties previously said the original Thursday deadline was very tight and they wouldn’t have a problem if it was extended.

Peters would not be drawn on whether he’s concerned that any agreement involving the Green Party also needs to get the support of 75 per cent of that party’s members.

“They don’t have to go back to their membership, they have to go back to about 170 members,” he said.

Delegates will represent the wider party membership.

Greens’ leader James Shaw said that he’s not concerned about the deadline being pushed out.

He’s also not too troubled by not being at the negotiating table, saying Labour is representing their interests.

been fenced off with red tape and Smith is urging people in the nesting area to give it a wide berth.

She’s hoping whitebaiters will avoid this part of the river and is asking that they keep dogs under control.

The black billed gulls have joined the white fronted terns at the river mouth and both colonies can be viewed with binoculars, Smith said.

In that section of the river there are about 3000 black billed gulls as well as many other species of bird seeking drier ground to breed.

The gull is a candidate for the NZ Bird of the Year and Smith is encouraging people to cast a vote.

Court action halts IRD tests The tax department has halted plans to use psychometric testing to evaluate staff reapplying for jobs after being taken to court by a public workers’ union.

Inland Revenue announced in July it would be cutting 1500 jobs with 4200 jobs affected by changes.

This has included calling on existing staff to reapply for a pool of 860 positions, often in jobs they have been doing for many years, the Public Service Association union says.

As part of this, they had been asked to take psychometric testing.

Calling the tests “absurd”, “pseudo-scientific” and a violation of its employees’ hu-

man rights, the union has taken the department to the Employment Court.

It led Inland Revenue to say yesterday it would halt the tests until the court rules on whether they can be used or not.

Following the announcement, PSA national secretary Erin Polaczuk said she was pleased Inland Revenue had backed down for now but warned that staff had other concerns with the department’s restructure.

Inland Revenue has claimed it is restructuring New Zealand’s tax system and as such was creating 860 “new specialist” jobs.

A date for the Employment Court hearing has not yet been set.

Independence scorned The Spanish government has rejected a statement of independence signed by Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and dismissed calls for mediation.

Spain’s deputy prime minister described Puigdemont as someone “who does not know where he is, where he’s going”.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is due to hold an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss the government’s next steps.

Puigdemont signed a declaration of independence yesterday, but halted implementation to allow negotiations.

There had been speculation that the Catalan president might declare independence and put the move into effect, plunging Spain into an even deeper political crisis.

Spain has been in turmoil since a disputed referendum on October 1 which was declared invalid by the country’s Constitutional Court.

Addressing the Catalan parliament in Barcelona, Puigdemont said the autonomous region had won the right to be independent as a result of the vote.

Charred chimneys left in wildfires’ wake The flames that raced across California wine country left little more than smoldering ashes and eye-stinging smoke in their wake.

House after house is gone, with only brick chimneys and charred laundry machines to mark sites that were once family homes.

The wildfires burned so hot that windows and tyre rims melted off cars, leaving many vehicles resting on their steel axles. In one driveway, the glass backboard of a basket-

ball hoop melted, dripped and solidified like a mangled icicle.

Newly homeless residents of Northern California took stock of their shattered lives yesterday while the blazes that have killed at least 17 people and destroyed more than 2000 homes and businesses kept burning.

Hundreds more firefighters joined the battle against the uncontained flames.

“This is just pure devastation, and it’s going to take us a while to get out and comb

through all of this,” said Ken Pimlott, chief of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. He said the state had “several days of fire weather conditions to come.”

The wildfires already rank among the five deadliest in California history, and officials expected the death toll to increase as the scope of destruction becomes clear. At least 185 people were injured during the blazes that started Sunday night.

ported missing in Sonoma County alone. Seventeen wildfires still raged across parts of seven counties. Fire crews and other resources were being rushed in from other parts of the state and Nevada.

More than 240 members of the California National Guard helped ferry fuel to first responders because so many gas stations were without power.

Guard members were also helping with medical evacuations and security at evacuation centres.

ritory of Guam to the South for drills with South Korean jets.

Such flights by the powerful aircraft based in Guam incense the North, which claims they are preparation for war; Pyongyang has threatened to send missiles into the waters around Guam.

If confirmed, the reported hacking attack by the North would be a major blow for South Korea at a time when its

relations with rival North Korea are at a low point.

The South has taken an increasingly aggressive stance toward the North’s belligerence amid back-and-forth threats of war between North Korea and US President Donald Trump.

North Korea’s possession of secret war plans would require a major overhaul of how South Korea and its ally Washington would respond if there’s an-

other war on the Korean Peninsula.

An unusually aggressive approach to the North by Trump, which has included rhetoric hinting at US strikes and threatening the destruction of North Korea’s leadership, has some South Koreans fearful that war is closer than at any time since the Korean War ended in 1953 in a shaky ceasefire.

Next Fifty Shades coming Once again, E L James is letting Christian Grey speak for himself. Vintage Books announced Tuesday that the next Fifty Shades novel, Darker: Fifty Shades Darker as Told by Christian will come out November. 28. Grey, published in 2015, also was told from Christian’s point of view. James said in a statement that the new book would give readers a “darker and more haunted” take on Christian.

James’ original Fifty Shades trilogy, the sexually graphic saga of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, has sold millions of copies.

I

f there’s one thing we have learnt in the past few months of the political battlefield, it’s to take anything Winston Peters might say with a grain of salt.

Peters, as has been written before, is the master of misleading the media and on more than one occasion he’s led a reporter on a merry old chase for nothing, other than personal enjoyment.

This irks some people, while for others it’s almost as enjoyable to watch as it must be for Peters to create.

What the New Zealand First leader is though, is clever.

He knows what he wants and he also knows how to get it.

And he knows how to not give anything away.

But perhaps yesterday, in a rare occurrence, Peters did give something away – a little insight into what might happen when he does finally pull the nation off its tenterhooks and announce who he will join in a coalition.

After a morning that turned into most of the day of negotiations, Peters did genuinely seem a lot more enthusiastic about the prospect of a partnership with Bill English and National.

There was almost a jovial nature to the way he spoke of the meeting, stating that those who voted may not have his party’s decision, or National’s decision, on policy – but instead a mutual decision.

And it was that comment, of all else that Winston offered, that perhaps led to the possibility of him leaning towards a National and New Zealand First government.

With the likelihood of a threeway sharing between NZ First, Labour and the Greens seeming very, very small, meetings with Jacinda Ardern must have been intriguing conversations.

Ardern has made her position on things very clear – she’s promised fairness, but will she be prepared to throw James Shaw and the Green Party under the bus to get the ultimate result?

Today was supposed to be the day we could all get on with our normal lives, or at least, know who was going to be in control, whether we liked it or not, but we are instead faced with an extended deadline – which could be extended again.

And so, only those in the know, actually know. While the majority remain in the dark.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall at one of those meetings.

YOUR VIEW Incorrect decision I believe council have made the wrong decision regarding the closure of Ashburton’s I-SITE Council allocate a yearly grant of $386,000 to Experience Mid Canterbury of which $144,000 is to fund the two I-SITES in Ashburton and Methven. This amount has been the same for around five years now. So begs the question – how serious is council on tourism?

My understanding is Methven is staying open but Ashburton is closed.

To run the Ashburton I-SITE is $63,000 per year according to Katherine Lorenzo’s very good article in your paper dated October 2, which, by the way, has been met with a deathly silence from council.

I find it disappointing that at a time of unprecedented visitor numbers coming to New Zealand that our council wants to “shut up shop” to redirect the $63,000 funding and close the I-SITE. Particularly when, in the same week, Council announced a profit of $10,000,000 I spent time on what was then the Ashburton Tourism Board and Council were banging away then that we had to break even or make a profit.

Can I say with all due respect, as long as my backside points south you were never going to make a profit as the majority of visits to the I-SITE would be for information, which is free.

Surely the $63,000 that would keep the I-SITE open is part of the cost of doing business in the tourism industry?

Can I say it’s a pity council had to bring in an outside consultant to give it the answer it wanted. I am sure that within our district there would be knowledgeable people in the tourism industry that council could have consulted to get a better result.

In fact, it would be interesting to know what the consultants’ fee was for this exercise.

Did this consultant ask how effective the balance of the $386,000 was being spent?

That money is spent on salary/wages, promoting Mid Canterbury at travel shows, brochures etc.

How do you measure whether attending these travel fests grow tourism in Mid Canterbury?

A visitor to our district is classed as a person who lives outside a 100km radius of Ashburton, and their visit to our district is picked up when they use their credit card.

But how do you know that

tourist was here because of the promotion at travel shows?

I would suggest a large number of so-called visitors to our district are here because Mid Canterbury sports groups, service clubs, companies, etc wish to host regional and national conferences, sports tournaments and events in Mid Canterbury.

Even people shopping in Ashburton would be classed as a visitor.

So they don’t come here because of the activities of Experience Mid Canterbury Now I want to make it clear I am not advocating the dispensing of Experience Mid Canterbury, but what I am saying would the $63,000 that our consultant says should go to promoting our district be redirected back to fund the re-opening of the Ashburton I-SITE When you travel overseas and you get to your destination the first thing you do is visit the local I-SITE or equivalent for info.

I know there will be brochures but guess what, you also need to talk to people. There will be questions that need answering that a brochure won’t do.

I understand technology is important but people deal with people. Particularly those who

aren’t fluent in English.

I was driving to Christchurch recently and they were talking about a book that would be available from your local I-SITE. Obviously not Ashburton!

Not having a prominent ISITE presence in Ashburton is not a good look for our visitors For the sake of $63,000 let’s keep our I-SITE open so our town can give a great welcoming experience, not just saying here are the brochures if you need them and of course if you can read them!!!

Council need to re-consider.

Mayor Donna needs to show some leadership on this topic.

Put this matter back on the agenda, rescind the motion to close our I-SITE and get it reopened.

As an aside I walk past the ISITE every morning. There is a notice on the door that reads; “Due to illness this I-SITE is closed till further notice. Sorry for any inconvenience”. It then redirects customers to a travel agency or the Methven I-SITE. What the sign should read is “Due to council withdrawing the $63,000 to fund this I-SITE we are closed”.

And are they really sorry for any inconvenience?

Three cheers for volunteers I

s it just from where I’m sitting or is there a worsening drought?

We’ve had more than our share of precipitation of late so it can’t be anything to do with that and this time the question has absolutely nothing to do with global warming.

What I’m talking about has more to do with a currency drought. A tightening of the belt when it comes to non-remunerated effort for the good of the greater community.

The currency of volunteering.

Over decades the human equity in our communities has peaked, I suspect around the 1970s, with active participants in all manner of voluntary organisations from the abundant local service clubs, meals on wheels, emergency services, returned services clubs, and a plethora of special interest groups covering sports, planes, trains and cars, to name a few.

Active participants of all age ranges.

But somewhere down the line there has been a shift, a change and in some cases, a total evaporation of some of the organisations that once flourished.

Is it a change in need, a change in commitment, a change in core community values or a sign of a more mebased world we now live in?

Probably, I’m guessing, a bit of all of the above.

Recently keen observers would have noted a special meeting called by the local diabetes support group. A special

meeting not to move the organisation forward but to wind the whole thing up.

After a prolonged period of trying in vain to attract more interest in support it became the only option left.

There could be quite modern reasons for the local branch demise.

Twenty years ago if you had a diagnosis you probably embraced the opportunity to meet with fellow persons so affected, along with health experts, to assist with guidance through the diabetic journey.

But that was before the age of Dr Google and the wealth of information just an i-Pad away.

And these days almost everyone has a device don’t they?

My 88-year-old dad is all over his and as a result is extremely well-connected and wellinformed on the many subjects that take his fancy.

So probably, to a degree, many clubs and groups have simply been superseded by technology.

Although that doesn’t explain the removal of human interaction which most people enjoy.

Recently, the Rotary Club of Ashburton ran their 38th Bookarama in the Sports Hall,

continuing their quest to raise cash for worthwhile local community projects. Like a million bucks worth over that time!

Thirty-eight years ago some of them were there doing the same thing, but they were in their 30s then, now pretty much everyone is in their 80s and I don’t see too many more 30, 40 or 50-yearolds coming up behind them.

In fact, outside the emergency services, which seem to continue to thrive despite the enormous demands placed on both the active volunteers and their employers, the rest of the volunteer population seems to be genteel. And well-retired.

Think back to a 1970s Ashburton when we had a flourishing Jaycee chapter. Gone.

There were the Interact and Rotaract Clubs as precursors to a life involved in Rotary. Gone.

These were the domain of the younger population and their demise doesn’t augur well for the future of voluntary community service.

But wait, before I depress you completely there are sparks of hope.

In Chistchurch the Student Army proved that in times of real need, young people are more than happy to re-invent the concept of community service.

On their terms, in their way.

And why not? It’s called evolution.

The Plains Railway and The Aviation Museum, are good examples of great local assets and attractions that were founded by

people who were then comparatively young.

It’s fair to say these days their numbers are fairly senior and to a degree have only a handful of young participants coming through to take the organisations into the future.

They have to, or they will simply wither and die. And those younger people will have different outlooks, fresh ideas and they should be embraced. It’s going to be their world. These facilities will need to meet the needs of their contemporaries.

They’ll still need volunteers to make them tick.

But one thing seems clear as we move deeper into a more tech world, with automated jobs, more people, fewer work opportunities and who knows even the introduction of a whole new existential template, the UBI (universal basic income).

Will people use their abundant spare time to step up for their fellow members of their communities?

Will the wheel turn full circle from busy, cramped crowded lives on the run, to a society where people return to the basic tenet of caring for each other?

Now there’s a nice prospect.

Let’s hang on to that one.

Rain frustrating for arable farmers

This year’s wet weather may have been good for Canterbury’s aquifers, but it’s been frustrating for the region’s arable farmers.

Foundation for Arable Research Mid Canterbury board member Steven Bierema said although it is still relatively early days in the growing season, the constant rainfall is already proving to be a headache for some.

The weather has meant that, particularly for those farming in areas that have heavy soils, just when water starts to drain away more rain comes in, making it difficult for the ground to dry out.

Not only has that meant it’s been a struggle for some arable farmers to get their spring crops in, they also have to be extremely vigilant for weeds and diseases, which tend to take off quickly in these conditions.

It’s been even worse for those who have used paddocks for dairy

grazing over the winter.

However, although conditions were challenging, Bierema remained upbeat, saying he would rather have the rain now than in autumn when he was trying to harvest.

“It’s more of a nuisance rather than anything dramatic,” he said.

“It’s too early to say if there’s been any real damage.

“But that’s farming. There’s always a trade-off somewhere.”

In past years the challenge for many arable farmers has been dry spells, he said, so this year was something different.

Although a lot of root crops such as potatoes are still to be planted, most spring crops on lighter soils are already in, he said, including cereals. Small seed crops are reaching the tail end of planting.

Ideally, Bierema would like the rain to stop and be followed by about a fortnight of dry weather, with maybe a bit more rain after that.

This year’s East Otago Field Days promises to be even better than last year’s event.

Just over 100 exhibitors were at the 2016 show and so far, a week out from the 2017 event, which is being held on October 18 and 19, that number has been surpassed.

There will be something for everyone at the field days, which will include cooking demonstrations, fashion parades and performances by magician Jonathan Usher on both days.

There will also be a fencing demonstration by South Island champion fencer Nick Perry.

Political leaders Bill English, Jacinda

Ardern and Winston Peters have been invited to attend, along with Dunedin MPs David Clark and Michael Woodhouse.

Golf will be an additional attraction this year, as the nine-hole Ardleigh golf course is on the western boundary of the field days site. Green fees will apply.

This year’s field days is being held at the Palmerston saleyards site at Meadowbank on State Highway 85, three kilometres inland from Palmerston.

Admission is $10 a day for adults, with children free.

No change to Beef + Lamb New Zealand levies Waterway Sheep meat and beef levies paid to Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) will remain unchanged for the levy year commencing October 1, 2017.

B+LNZ chairman James Parsons said the board reviewed budgets and activities for the financial year commencing October 1 and that the sheep meat levy on all sheep slaughtered would remain at $0.60 per head and the beef levy, on all cattle slaughtered (including beef cattle and dairy cattle but excluding bobby calves), at $4.40 per head (GST exclusive).

“We’ve recently completed a consultation round with farmers where we asked for feedback on our updated strategy through to 2022 and also what we’re committing to in the year ahead,” Parsons said.

“Farmers have reinforced the issues that matter most to them and given us strong direction.

“Some key areas are improved promotion of our products in partnership with processors, better extension and an influential voice with government to ensure farmers’ backs are covered on issues such as biosecurity, environment and compliance issues.

“It’s pleasing to see farmers are getting real value out of our recent workshops and seminars across some of these key issues, particularly health and safety and environmental planning, and they want more.”

There is also a big ambition and urgency to see the New Zealand red meat story told, ensuring urban audiences and global customers understand the sector, its value and market differ-

ence, he said. “Farmers want to promote the value of New Zealand’s natural pasture fed beef and lamb and high-quality farming systems and draw in consumers with that story, especially as synthetic proteins emerge more into the market.”

The environment has emerged

as a concern for farmers, particularly around water quality and farming.

“Farmers want better connections with all New Zealanders and ensure they better understand that farmers value the environment, and are making big efforts to protect and enhance it.

“At the same time, they want support for more actions and solutions, more environmental planning workshops and tools to help measure the impact of what they’re doing to improve the environment and more engagement with government to ensure practical policies are in place.”

Parliamentary pied piper preaches patience W

ell, the wait goes on.

Today was touted as D-Day, or decision day, as to who would be forming the next government.

But on Tuesday night Winston Peters, the pied piper of parliamentary reporters in recent weeks, postponed the announcement the country has been waiting for.

Maybe tomorrow, maybe not.

In the meantime, we’ll just have to hold our collective breath a little longer before we find out whether Peters will steer the nation slightly to the left or right of the centre line, and where that will lead us.

Some will say he’s prolonging making that decision public because he’s enjoying his time in the sun as king or queen maker, while the man himself says it’s a serious decision and not one that can be rushed. We need to be

patient, he says.

As with most things, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

Whichever way he goes, and whether you trust Peters or not, there are two things that should give farmers and regional communities some hope.

Firstly, he has been constantly on the record promoting the importance of regional development, using one speech in June this year to say “regional New Zealand has been used and abused”.

Former Labour and New Labour MP Jim Anderton once held ministerial responsibility for industry and regional development and you wouldn’t want to discount Peters from trying to have some influence there, should he opt for a coalition agreement rather than sitting on the crossbenches and just supporting confidence and supply.

It would be maybe not such a bad thing to have Peters going into bat for the regions, as long as he does not try to restrict immigrant labour there.

The second is that there is someone close to Peters who has an affinity for farmers, what they need and what they definitely don’t.

New Zealand First’s chief of staff in parliament is David Broome, who spent about nine years as Federated Farmers general manager of strategic com-

munications before taking on his role with NZ First.

Broome, like Peters, is an astute operator, and he will have his boss’ ear. However, just how much he wants to push that, and how much influence he has, remains to be seen.

After all, despite what the NZ First leader says about the final decision on who will get their support, he is, and has always been, his own man. His party, and fellow NZ First MPs will know that better than anyone.

One way or another we will know soon and then we can at least get on with it.

Let’s just hope this pied piper doesn’t do what his namesake from German legend did and lead everyone into oblivion.

Fencing of waterways has proven very effective where it has been used to combat the risks of contamination from agriculture, AgResearch says.

AgResearch’s Professor Rich McDowell, the chief scientist for the Our Land and Water National Science Challenge, was speaking after the publication of a study looking at policies for fencing waterways on contamination loads in New Zealand waterways.

His paper was published in the American Journal of Environmental Quality.

The Ministry for the Environment’s Our Freshwater 2017 report indicated that urban waterways have the worst overall water quality in New Zealand, but much of the public focus in recent years has been on the impact of agriculture – particularly dairy farming – on waterways in rural areas.

“Fencing is very effective at reducing contaminant loads to waterways – by 10 to 90 per cent depending on the nature of the contaminants and local issues,” McDowell said.

“Fencing works especially well for the likes of E.coli or phosphorus contamination that can result from animal waste or stream bank destabilisation. However, fencing all waterways in New Zealand is impractical and in some places other good management practices may be more cost-effective.

“A combination of better awareness of the issues and the use of good management practices (including fencing) in the right place is starting to reverse degrading trends in the likes of phosphorus and sediment in the water over the last decade,” McDowell said.

Dairy farmers had invested in a major programme of fencing waterways to the equivalent of nearly 27,000km. They should continue to do so as it is effective at reducing waterway contamination, McDowell said.

“The fact that most of the contaminant load comes from areas not requiring fencing reflects the much greater number and areas occupied by small streams – potentially from steeper country where dairy farming is unlikely to be present. Vehicle sales continue to strengthen Vehicle sales are continuing to reach record highs, despite expectations for a slowdown during the election and post-election uncertainty, with cheap credit and economic confidence buoying the market.

Sales data from the Motor Industry Association last week showed motor vehicle registrations in the first nine months of this year are 10 per cent ahead of the same period last year at 118,256, suggesting vehicle sales may be heading for a fourth straight annual record this year as the economy is buoyed by low interest rates and record migration.

MIA chief executive David Crawford said the ongoing buying was a bit of a pleasant surprise and has been encouraged by the current environment.

“There’s strong net immigration, the New Zealand dollar on the stronger end so price is competitive, and pricing between distributors is competitive,” Crawford said.

“People have got confidence the economy is heading in the right direction. When the cost of finance is as low as it is now, you find people don’t top up their mortgages to buy a car, they just

buy it on finance because the cost of finance is cheap.”

However, he noted that this could be a case of substitution to SUVs, which the industry didn’t see in 2008 and 2009.

Guest nights decline during August New Zealand national guest nights declined in August as stays in the North Island dropped by the largest amount in more than three years.

Total guest nights fell 0.3 per cent to 2.44 million in August this year compared with August last year, Statistics New Zealand said.

Guest nights in the North Island dropped 3.6 per cent, the biggest fall since March 2014 when they declined 6.3 per cent, while South Island guest nights increased 4.8 per cent, the agency said.

The national decline in guest nights is the first monthly drop in five months and was driven by a 5.8 per cent fall in domestic guest nights in the North Island, offsetting an 8.8 per cent jump in domestic guest nights in the South

Island. International guest nights advanced 1.3 per cent in the North Island and 0.9 per cent in the South Island.

“Increases in domestic guest nights in the South Island, and modest increases in international guest nights in both islands, weren’t enough to offset the North Island’s decrease in domestic guest nights this August,” accommodation statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said.

Eight of the country’s 12 regional areas reported more guest nights.

Canterbury nights increased 4.7 per cent to 316,000, while the Nelson, Marlborough, Tasman region saw nights rise 14 per cent to 114,000 and the West Coast lifted nights 14 per cent to 62,000.

Offsetting the declines, Auckland

stays fell 5.3 per cent to 537,000, Wellington dropped 6.7 per cent to 204,000 and Waikato slid 5.6 per cent to 187,000.

Hotel guest nights were unchanged at 1.03 million, while motel nights fell 1.8 per cent to 819,000 and backpacker stays slipped 0.2 per cent to 306,000.

Holiday parks bucked the trend, with stays up 2.5 per cent to 289,000.

The hotel occupancy rate edged up 0.4 percentage points to 62.8 per cent, while the holiday park rate edged up 0.2 percentage points to 10.1 per cent, and the backpacker rate advanced 0.3 percentage points to 32.3 per cent.

Meanwhile the motel rate slipped 0.1 percentage points to 50.6 per cent.

House affordability improves slightly House price falls in some regions have improved home affordability in New Zealand, a new report has found.

The latest Massey University Home Affordability Report reveals improvement in seven out of 13 regions between June and August.

The report also shows national affordability improved 2.1 per cent, and an improvement of 0.6 per cent for Auckland.

The most affordable regions in the country are Southland and Manawatu/Whanganui.

Report author, Associate Professor Graham Squires, said falling house prices in Northland, Wellington and Central Otago were the main drivers for the improved affordability.

“Median house prices in Central Otago Lakes dropped the most over the last quarter, declining by $35,000,” Squires said.

“This was followed by Northland, where median prices dropped by $30,000, and Wellington experienced a $28,000 drop.”

But compared over a 12-month period, national affordability still decreased 10.5 per cent compared to last year.

Central Otago Lakes houses remained the country’s least affordable at 68 per cent less affordable than the rest of New Zealand, followed by Auckland on 50 per cent.

Median house prices were 14 times the annual wage for Central Otago Lakes region and 13 times the annual wage for Auckland.

“House price-to-wages ratios remain very high, and this continues to place considerable strain on first-home buyers in Auckland and Central Otago Lakes,” Squires said.

The greatest improvement in affordability are in Northland at 11.5 per cent and Taranaki at 7.5 per cent.

Squires said house prices continued to be the key determining factor in home affordability as borrowing costs had remained relatively low and static.

“We’ve seen significant falls in house prices in some regions this quarter, so it will be interesting to see if this spreads to other regions in the coming quarter,” he said.

Mini bacon and egg pies

12 eggs + 1 extra egg to wash the pastry 1kg puff pastry sheets (shortcrust works well too) 150g of bacon, chopped Salt and pepper to taste 1/2 t oil or butter to grease the muffin tray 1 small white onion, finely diced 1C grated cheese ■ Heat oven to 200˚C. Grease and line the individual muffin trays with pastry.

■ Sprinkle half of the bacon evenly into each lined muffin pastry case.

■ In a bowl, crack the eggs, and add the onion and cheese.

Whisk gently with a fork.

■ Evenly pour the mixture into each muffin pan, being careful not to overfill.

■ Add the remaining bacon evenly on top of the egg mixture, then cover each one with a round of

pastry. Pinch around the edges to seal the lid, then brush with an egg wash.

■ Prick a few holes in the lid.

■ Bake in the middle of the oven for 25-30 mins or until cooked and golden.

Ashburton Dahlia Circle

Ashburton MSA Bowling Club

The first meeting of the circle was held September 19 and President Brian Glassey welcomed a small but enthusiastic group of keen gardeners.

A daffodil & spring flower show had tabled 116 entries, the top prize daffodil was won by Brian.

Special mention, a beautiful Imperial Fritillaria, Trilliums, Iris, Rhododendron and Camellias also made a great display.

Discussions took place around planting of Dahlias which have been lifted and stored for the winter.

Dahlia tubers are now starting to burst into life, and it is time to get them in the ground, with the soil temperatures warming up.

It is planned to hold an open meeting, on Tuesday October 17 in the supper room of the Tinwald Memorial Hall at 7.30pm.

Members of the public interested in the growing of Dahlias are welcome to a look and learn night, dividing tubers and tips for planting and growing these great flowers.

A sales table will be held in conjunction with the evening.

We look forward to a good response from keen gardeners.

The new season has begun and in typical spring conditions the weather has played its part in seeing the cancellation of the Friday Half day triples.

That was a good call and provided a good surface for the Peters Cup played in good conditions and won by the team of S. Keith, B. Mason, M. Smallridge and M. Fargo Our first in house tournament, The Ted Peck Cup was played the following Saturday. It is a progressive format of play and winners were J. Argyle best skip, B. Neilson best 2nd D. Lysaght best lead.

In brief Injury ‘not serious’ Los Angeles Lakers coach Luke Walton says Andrew Bogut’s groin injury is not serious and he expects the Australian centre to be ready for their opening game of the NBA regular season. Emergency meeting Football Federation Australia has called an extraordinary general meeting in an attempt to end the impasse over the sport’s governance and push through a new congress model. Intensifying the turmoil surrounding Australian soccer after reports of Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou’s imminent departure, FFA has called the meeting for November 1 and claims it has the support of the nine member federations for its preferred 9-4-1-1 model.

However, the A-League clubs and Professional Footballers Australia oppose that structure and have threatened legal action.

One win, but hopes for more

The Ashburton College senior girls’ netball side will leave the national tournament in Rotorua with at least one win under their belts, but hope to pick up more over the next few days.

The side, which finished sixth at the South Island tournament, finished third in their pool after

picking up a narrow, one-goal victory over Queen Margaret College 35-34.

“It was a really tight game, we were behind by one goal with about three minutes to go and took the lead and held it,” coach Angela Mitchell said.

It was a strong game in the circle for goal shoot Grace Wilson and goal attack Georgina Kelly,

who both shot over 70 per cent.

“Georgina and Grace have built up a really strong relationship and have performed well together,” Mitchell said.

In their first game of the tournament, AshColl came up against Mt Albert Grammar School, going down 51-25.

Yesterday morning, St Hilda’s Collegiate School was the third

side AshColl lined up against.

AshColl led by one at the end of the first quarter, but St Hilda’s stepped up the intensity in the other quarters, and eventually ran away 44-27 winners.

They will now kick off their next round robin games against St Andrew’s College, before facing Sacred Heart College and Palmerston North Girls’ High School.

Galloway hard on himself after Nix draw Apologetic and contrite, Wellington Phoenix fullback Scott Galloway has declared himself at fault for Adelaide United’s equalising goal in last weekend’s A-League season-opening 1-1 draw.

Ahead 1-0 after Dario Vidosic’s early header, the Nix allowed their opponents back into the match when Nikola Mileusnic, free down the right edge, crossed for Adelaide debutant Johan Absalonsen to nod home.

Absalonsen had made a darting run from the left, leaving Galloway all at sea.

“That was only our fourth, so to adjust to the tempo of the game takes time.

“There’s still plenty more to improve on, plenty more to show.”

UFC pulls Hunt from fight Kiwi UFC star Mark Hunt has written an expletive-ridden Facebook post aimed at UFC president Dana White, condemning White’s decision to withdraw him from next month’s UFC event in Sydney.

Hunt posted a photo of himself in his car and coupled it with a fiery caption showing his fury at his withdrawal from his hometown event.

UFC decided to withdraw Hunt after he confessed to now slurring his words and “forgetting something I did yesterday” in a recent article with website, Players Voice.

Brazilian superstar Fabricio Werdum, who fought and won only last Sunday, has been parachuted into the main event against Polish slugger Marcin Tybura at Qudos Bank Arena on November 19.

The Daily Telegraph has revealed that UFC officials reviewed the article and decided that, in the interests of fighter

safety, Sydneysider Hunt must be withdrawn from the fight for further testing.

The contentious move caps off a whirlwind 12 months for the No. 5 ranked heavyweight, who is also embroiled in an ongoing legal battle with both the UFC and American megastar Brock Lesnar.

Hunt is demanding punitive compensatory damages from both after Lesnar failed two drug tests following their blockbuster encounter at UFC 200.

In his first person article for Players Voice, Hunt wrote: “My body is f ... ed but my mind is still here. I’ve still got my senses about me and I know what’s right and wrong, which is the main thing.

“Sometimes I don’t sleep well.

You can hear me starting to stutter and slur my words. My memory is not that good anymore.

“I’ll forget something I did yesterday but I can remember the shit I did years and years ago.

That’s just the price I’ve paid – the price of being a fighter.

“But I’ve fought a lot of drug cheats and copped a lot of punishment from guys who were cheating and that’s not right.”

A UFC official said yesterday: “Following a recent first-person article published by heavyweight Mark Hunt, the UFC has taken the precautionary steps of removing Hunt from a previously announced bout in Sydney, Australia.

“The health-related statements made by Hunt in the article represent the first time UFC was made aware of these claims.

Athlete health and safety is of the utmost importance to the organisation and it would never knowingly schedule an athlete complaining of health issues for a fight. The organisation will require that Hunt undergo further testing and evaluations prior to competing in any future UFC bout.”

Despite his ongoing legal ac-

tion against the UFC, Hunt has already fought twice this year losing to Alistair Overeem via KO in March before rallying to beat Derrick Lewis, who was on a sixwin streak, via TKO in June.

Given his popularity Down Under, the Auckland-born fighter was the obvious choice to headline the Sydney event.

Ironically, Werdum was initially offered to be Hunt’s opponent on next month’s Fight Night card, but accepted a fight against Derrick Lewis at UFC 216 last Sunday, instead.

Lewis, however, withdrew from the Las Vegas card at the 11th hour because of a back injury.

As a result, Werdum instead was pitted against Alabama native Walt Harris, who was promoted on just three hours notice.

The Brazilian required only 65 seconds to make Harris tap from an armbar.

So now, he heads Down Under.

Collier Trophy, Hatch Cup sides gain points

Both Mid Canterbury’s Collier Trophy and Hatch Cup sides have made good impressions during the pool play of their respective tournaments this week.

The Hatch Cup boys kicked off their tournament in style with a 3-0 victory over North Otago,

able to build from a goalless first half to score three in the second.

They were unable to back up their performance in the next game against the Bay of Plenty, trailing 1-0 at half-time, the BOP eventually running out 3-1 winners.

It was a similar story in the third game against Tauranga, go-

ing down 3-1 after trailing 1-0 at the halftime break.

They were once again able to hang in there in the first half against Counties Manukau, but eventually fell away to a 2-0 loss.

The Collier Trophy girls’ side had to wait for their final game of pool play to pick up their first points.

Leading 1-0 at halftime, an equaliser from Counties Manukau with eight minutes to go dashed hopes of a victory.

The side’s next best result came against Nelson with a 3-0 loss, mixed in with a 5-0 loss against Tauranga, a 7-0 loss against the Waikato and a 8-0 loss to North Harbour.

With Luke Ronchi’s international retirement, the search resumes for the country’s next limited overs wicketkeeper(s).

Tom Latham, Glenn Phillips, Tom Blundell and Tim Seifert will soon all be on the ground in India as the New Zealand ‘A’ tour morphs into the Black Caps itinerary at the end of the month.

The nine-man one-day international squad – including Latham – head off tonight.

Six players from the ‘A’ squad will join them from their weather-blighted tour, which has two rescheduled one-day matches remaining.

The tourists secured a tie on Tuesday in a rain-shortened fixture against their Indian counterparts at Visakhapatnam.

Both teams finished on 269 from 42 overs with New Zealand losing six wickets and India nine.

Phillips stamped his mark with 140 not out from 130 balls, while Blundell took the gloves and conceded one bye.

“The newer ball was coming on nice, then I worked through the middle of the innings with Tom [Bruce] and Henry [Nicholls],” Phillips said.

“I was just ticking things over to do whatever was needed and firing at the end.

“They bowled straight, which was effective on that deck. Their spinners used pace well, and, as evening went on, it stuck and turned a bit.”

Phillips made his T20 international debut against South Africa last summer as a specialist batsmen but could continue as wicketkeeper in the three matches against India next month.

He played seven innings for the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League this season, including a 51 off 47 balls to help defeat the Amazon Warriors.

However, Phillips’ 50-over game is in its fledgling stages.

The 20-year-old Aucklander has played 13 List A matches to average 41.91, including three centuries, with a strike rate of 92.

Latham seems a more solid bet to be anointed as Ronchi’s ODI successor.

If that proves true, the 25-yearold will be responsible for manoeuvring the side’s totals through the middle order as opposed to his more accustomed role of opening.

Selector Gavin Larsen said Blundell was a “frontline” option to keep, although Latham was eventually preferred.

Seifert was listed as keeper in both the first-class fixtures in India last month.

He has averaged 34.65, including two centuries, in 23 matches and secured 66 dismissals.

The Northern Districts representative’s glovework looks sound, judging by first-class footage behind the stumps last season which included sharp catches off Tim Southee’s pace and Ish Sodhi’s leg spin.

All Whites to face Peru All Whites boss Anthony Hudson has pulled no punches on his side’s intercontinental 2018 World Cup play-off opponent, saying Peru was his preferred adversary for a ticket to Russia next June.

In a helter-skelter final round of South American qualifying, Los Incas’ 1-1 draw with Colombia was enough to see them finish fifth above Chile.

Peru had been occupying the play-off position going into yesterday’s match in Lima but fell out of the CONMEBOL top five when Colombia took the lead.

They appeared destined for the exit door until the 76th minute, but revived their hopes of a first World Cup finals appearance since 1982 when Brazil-based striker Paolo Guerrero nabbed a

crucial equaliser.

They rode out the draw to finish fifth and book a two-legged play-off berth with New Zealand, while Colombia finished fourth.

Hudson told reporters he was glad to get Peru, rather than a star-studded outfit such as Colombia, Chile or Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

Of those sides, Peru was the weakest on paper and had the dimmest aura.

“Whoever we get, it’s a tough game, very tough. But I think that out of all the teams we were looking at, certainly from my point of view, Peru was the team I would’ve liked to have played,” Hudson said.

“Out of all of them, that was a team that’d give us confidence.”

Despite Hudson’s fighting

words, the Ricardo Garecacoached Peru are 12th in the FIFA rankings, while New Zealand are ranked 113th.

Ex-Bayern Munich striker Guerrero would also be a major handful up front, while Jefferson Farfan and Andre Carrillo would provide attacking impetus.

The first leg will be played in Wellington on either November 10 or 11, with the date to be set in stone by FIFA in the coming days.

The All Whites will then travel to Lima for the return leg.

Fresh off last week’s 2-1 loss to Japan in Nagoya, Hudson swore the All Whites would produce the two best performances of his tenure next month.

Their extensive experience with travel – having played in New Zealand, Fiji, the United

States, New Caledonia, Northern Ireland, Belarus, Russia, the Solomon Islands and Japan in the past 12 months – would hold them in good stead.

“The last game against Japan was better than the previous games (at the Confederations Cup) – we get our belief from that, knowing we can compete and bearing in mind all of those have been away,” Hudson said.

“I believe in this team – they’re together, believe, working well and we’re now reaching that final point, the best squad we’ve ever had.”

Elsewhere, Chile fell out of World Cup contention – despite their status as back-to-back South American champions – with a ruinous 3-0 loss to Brazil.

Arjen Robben has ensured that the Netherlands bowed out of World Cup qualification in style, scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Sweden before he announced his retirement from international football.

The winning margin at the Amsterdam Arena was nowhere near enough for the Netherlands, who had to win by seven goals to move above their second-placed opponents in Group A. It was a bittersweet moment for the 33-year-old veteran who made his Dutch debut in 2003.

“I wanted to show one more time all the things that I can do,” he said.

The Swedes, who looked content to defend throughout the match, finished behind automatic qualifiers France and go into Europe’s World Cup qualification playoffs.

It was 33-year-old Robben’s 96th and final international for the Netherlands and he stamped his authority all over the match, taking his tally of goals to 37, level with Dennis Bergkamp.

Robben gave the hosts the lead when he converted – though only just – a 16th minute penalty with a fluffed Panenka chip.

There was no sign of a misshit for his second goal, a powerful first-time shot from just outside the penalty area that fizzed past Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen and into the top corner in the 40th minute.

As the final whistle sounded, the crowd rose to give Robben a standing ovation, chanting, “Arjen, thanks” in Dutch.

Robben helped the Netherlands reach the World Cup final in 2010, which they lost to Spain, and third at the 2014 tournament.

After a host of injuries during his career Robben was quoted by vi.nl as saying: “The man of glass has lasted the longest.”

“I’ve been thinking about it (international retirement) for a long time.

“I have already considered it for a while, but then I went on.

“I’m 33 years old now. I’m playing at a top club in Europe and I want to concentrate on it now,” he said.

My Field Marshal thrills Butt Kiwi trainer Tim Butt believes almost every box has been ticked that needs to be for his star pacer My Field Marshal to win Saturday night’s $A200,000 Victoria Cup in Melbourne.

The only sticking point is that champion local pacer Lennytheshark has drawn the one barrier over the 2200-metre trip.

At Melton, where the straight is quite short, being in front is a big asset.

So all Butt and his brother Anthony, who will drive My Field Marshal, want is a true tempo and Lennytheshark to not be gifted the race.

“The key is probably going to be the Kevin Pizzuto-trained pair, Code Black and Tiger Tara,”

he said. “They are drawn near enough to have a crack for the lead and you would think one or both will try and cross Lennytheshark.

“Either way, it’s going to be interesting as I’m sure ‘Lenny’ isn’t going to get it as easy as he did last week.”

In last Friday night’s Smoken Up Sprint, Lennytheshark found the lead and sprinted home in 26.5secs to record an easy win.

Field Marshal, who had gotten back in the field, flashed home late for second out wide, and pulled a punctured tyre in doing so.

“It happened at about the 700-metre mark and it makes a big difference with those carts

when you get a flat,” said Butt.

“I think he’s run his last half in 54.7secs, off the track, and he has tightened up from it.

“It’s definitely improved him and I’m pretty happy with where he is at.”

Field Marshal has drawn to most likely start from two on the second line, meaning he will follow out star mare Ameretto.

Butt is happy with the draw and thinks it will ultimately work to the horse’s advantage.

“It’s worked out great for old ‘Lenny’, but we are pretty happy with our draw, too.

“If they go break-neck up front, we will be very hard to beat.

“And if they don’t, I’m not too

worried about Anthony taking him round to sit parked for the last lap.

“You’ve got to be handy at this level, especially at a track like Melton.”

Butt moved to Australia to train permanently a fortnight ago and will ultimately be basing himself at Menangle, south of Sydney.

But in the meantime he is campaigning three horses – My Field Marshal, Let It Ride and Letsgotothehop – in Melbourne.

His New Zealand stable will continue to operate with Jonny Cox soon to take over the day-today running of the West Melton barn.

Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes goal for Euphoria Lightly-raced mare Euphoria is likely to make one more appearance before she heads to Christchurch.

Trainer Rachael Frost has set the Rip Van Winkle four-yearold for the Gr.3 Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (1400m) on the middle day of next month’s New Zealand Cup carnival.

Euphoria opened her campaign with a first-up success at New Plymouth, the third of her six-start career, and an outing at the rescheduled Hawke’s Bay meeting on October 22 is next on her programme.

“She’ll run in a Rating 75 over 1400m and she probably won’t run again before the Breeders’

Stakes,” Frost said.

It will be Euphoria’s second southern sojourn and connections are hoping for a turnaround in their fortunes after the disappointment of last spring.

“She won at Motukarara, but then she suffered a stress fracture to her tibia before the 1000 Guineas,” Frost said.

Following a lengthy recovery period, Euphoria travelled to Brisbane for the Queensland winter carnival only for a virus to force her return home after a sixth placing at Ipswich.

“Hopefully, all her problems are behind her - she’s well above average,” Frost said.

The son of Roc de Cambes races in the colours of OTI Racing, who are keen to give the gelding the opportunity to earn a spot in the Gr.1 VRC Derby (2500m).

“He’s run three very good races and if he can stay he’ll be competitive,” Forsman said.

Mid Canterbury’s premier tennis competition is set to kick off this weekend, with six teams once again contesting the interclub A-grade.

Mid Canterbury tennis coach Andre van Rooyen will lead Allenton, supported by either Bryn Looji or Connor Brosnahan.

Rhys Cromie and Tyler Leon-

ard will represent Fairton, while Jason Feutz and Luke Glendining will fly the Southern banner.

Aidan Mitchell and Gala Cup doubles champ Peter Kirwan will play for Hampstead, with Sam Bubb, Koji Kawamata and Jarrad Hill on the list for Methven.

Edwin Dargue and Peter Leonard round out the teams for Tinwald.

Allenton, the Methven Diamonds, the Hampstead Aces, Methven Gold, Southern/Wakanui and the Hampstead Hillbillies make up the A-reserve grade.

The players will get a weekend off during Labour Weekend, with the Mid Canterbury Junior Open being held that weekend.

Plenty of Mid Canterbury tennis players are representing the

region in Christchurch as well, with Gala Cup champion Flynn Ness, Ladies’ champion Tessa McCann and Ashleigh Leonard all playing in the premier competition.

Mid Canterbury will have the chance to defend the Browning Shield at home on February 24 and 25, with the season wrapping up with the Gala Cup weekend on March 17 and 18.
