Shop locally for jobs, we’re much more exciting than you think, was the message delivered by Mid Canterbury businesses to senior students at Ashburton College yesterday. Eight businesses, covering white and blue collar professions, said attitude was more important than ability and that a university degree was not a prerequisite to a rewarding and profitable career. Several hundred students in Year 12 and 13 are contemplating what they will do next year, weighing up more secondary and tertiary education against an apprenticeship or a gap year.

The mini expo was the first of what the school hopes will be annual expos where it can create better connections to the Mid Canterbury business community. “It shows how much the community cares and is willing to invest in you,” deputy principal Ryan Wilson told the students. “The message is that there are qualities they want you to show, but the big thing is get out there and talk to people and look for opportunities.” Heartland Technology director Richard Spackman said it was a great opportunity for the students to connect with businesses and for businesses to identify “rockstars” that would help

them grow. Four years ago Heartland employed its own star from college and he had become an important part of the business, with a company car and good salary. The 21-year-old had travelled overseas and recently bought a house. “You don’t need to leave the region to get a good job. “Plenty of companies are looking for good young people; it is about work ethic, turning up on time, having a great attitude, working hard and doing extra.”
