A plea for town security patrols has been added to calls to investigate installation of a security camera in Methven following incidents of petty vandalism.

A Methven resident whose home was targeted in a recent egging spate in Methven believes the Ashburton District Council should introduce security patrols in the town.

But the council says security patrols and cameras are costly, and it is not responsible for policing activity on private property.

The Methven resident, who did not wish to be named, said she discovered one morning about four weeks ago that at least six eggs had been thrown against her South Belt home’s walls and windows overnight. It had not been easy to wash off.

“It’s still on my house, I would love

them to come and clean it,” the woman said of the petty vandals.

She believed not only did the community need to pull together to keep any eye out, but thought the council could send one of its security vehicles patrolling Ashburton parks to the town during evenings leading up to and on weekends.

Tiny cottage, big history New Zealand’s smallest surviving pioneer cottage is for sale and is expected to fetch far more than its estimated 30 pound purchase price. Built in 1850, McKenzie Cottage on Albert Road, in Auckland’s Devonport, is on the market. A renovation at the rear has transformed the tiny one-bedroom settlers’ cottage into a three-bedroom, two-bathroom family home.

While researching the property’s history, current owners Paeata and David Cotter found it had been in the same family for nearly 150 years until 1991. The original owner, farmer Richard Dunne, is buried across the road at the historic Mt Victoria Cemetery and his wife and children are buried at nearby O’Neill’s Point cemetery. The farmer and road builder from Ireland was married to Jessie and had three daughters and a son. His youngest daughter, Sarah, married Donald McKenzie and they had a daughter, Gladys McKenzie, who lived at McKenzie Cottage until her death in 1991.

Serena Williams, Drake ‘not a couple’ Serena Williams’ representative has dismissed reports the tennis ace is engaged to rapper Drake, insisting they aren’t even dating. The stars hit headlines in August when they were spotted kissing and last month, Drake was spotted cheering on Serena at the US Open in New York. Unexpected gift for Wood Broadcaster Susan Wood says the serious brain injury she suffered in a fall in her home in January this year has given her the gift of remembering her father again. Wood fell down stairs in her home on January 10 and was discovered by her niece unconscious on the floor and bleeding from her head. She has lost around six weeks of memory from that period of time, but told Newstalk ZB that the recovery also brought back memories of her father, who died when she was 24 years old. “It’s a really lovely thing,” she said.

“I was very close to my father and I was young... when he died. Now I have dreams about him, I think about him every day and just to have him back in my mind... it’s lovely for me, to hear from him again. That was one of the very good things that happened this year.” When she was taken to hospital part of her skull was removed to release pressure on her brain. Wood went through a recovery process to learn to walk, talk, read and eat again. “I learnt it all very quickly, thank goodness... I got that stuff back, which is just a real relief for me.” She said she has spoken to her two sons, Alexander and Matthew, about what she was like in the immediate aftermath of the accident. “It was an absolutely horrible thing for them for several weeks, when I couldn’t speak.They were fantastic... I know for that first three weeks it was really harsh on them.”

Another take on a classic Artist Dick Frizzell has produced another take on his famous lithograph, Mickey to Tiki, to help celebrate central Auckland.

Downtown Tiki, a brick red, mustard yellow and black and white heart-shaped mural, is part of Heart of the City’s Heart Mark outdoor artwork series. The initiative, in which artists share what Auckland’s central city means to them, was timed to coincide with Artweek Auckland, which began yesterday. Frizzell said he painted the work on a wall of the Auckland Fish Market building during a “howling gale” on Wednesday. “I was battling the elements in a scissor lift.” He struggled with the assignment until he had a “4am epiphany”, Frizzell said. “I went back to my usual trick what would Dick Frizzell do? I had the idea that I could take a tiki and work it with a heart-shaped framework ... I’m rapt with the way it came out.”

‘Suspicious’ fire investigated

An Ashburton woman is lucky to be alive after a potentially suspicious fire broke out at a Trevors Road address in the early hours of Sunday.

Three Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade appliances attended the blaze at a Housing New Zealand property at about 1.17am.

Fire investigation authorities were also called as there had been no-one occupying the home overnight.

Ashburton fire risk management officer Murray Cairns said it was lucky the female occupant was not home.

“If a fire like that occurred in the middle of the night when people were home it would have had fatal consequences.’’

Because there was nobody at the property, they would be treating the fire as suspicious until proven otherwise, he said.

A neighbour fortunately heard the smoke alarms and alerted emergency services.

“The lady who lived there lost everything in the fire.’’

The woman’s home is known to be one of at least four properties in the town which have been targeted by such attacks. Another resident told the Guardian of three commercial premises which had succumbed to similar treatment about three weeks ago.

“We still have some to clean off,” he said.

Emergency services spent about four hours at the property initially and came back later in the morning to continue the investigation, which is ongoing.

Urban contracts engineer Hernando Marilla reported to the board at the time that there had not been any incidents of vandalism at the town’s public toilets since a security camera had been installed there last year.

Ski season wraps up

About 600 skiers and snowboarders revelled in top spring conditions on Mt Hutt’s last day for the 2015 season yesterday.

It was a festive atmosphere as the 2015 ski season wrapped up at Mt Hutt yesterday.

After being extended by one week due to good snow conditions, the season ended with about 600 skiers and snowboarders enjoying sunshine and perfect spring snow.

The ski season finished with a base of 130 centimetres on the upper mountain, and 80 centimetres on the lower mountain, a good level after last year’s ski season was the worst in nine years.

Manager James McKenzie said skier numbers this year were on a par with last year, a result management was happy with considering trying conditions during some parts of the season.

He was looking forward to welcoming Mid Cantabrians back next year, and there were improvements planned. These included to the access road, and extending beginners’ terrain.

Mr McKenzie said while last year was a poor snow year, this year had been a season of two halves, with windy conditions striking at the start combined

with snow conditions which were a “little bit lean”. The second half had seen better weather and snow conditions, however, there had overall been only 12 good weekend days out of 38.

“Weekends for Mt Hutt are pretty critical. To lose that number of bad days to bad weather or bad snow or both makes it quite difficult to have a massive season,” Mr McKenzie said.

It had been a festive end, with a DJ playing music, an air bag jump, and most terrain open including Top Towers.

French honour fighter pilot

World War Two fighter pilot Donald Ivey was relaxing in his Rosebank rest home room yesterday after receiving France’s highest honour.

Mr Ivey travelled with his son and wife, Basil and Vicki Ivey of Ashburton, to receive the French Legion of Honour in a ceremony at the Christchurch RSA on Friday.

The French ambassador Florence Jeanblanc-Risler presented the award, which Mr Ivey received alongside fellow veteran Frank Hill, for their contribution to the liberation of France.

“It’s definitely a high honour,” Mr Ivey said with a cup of tea by his side, his sedate surroundings far removed from his days dodging enemy fire and bombing opposition forces.

It is 70 years since he returned from the war, where he flew 65 missions over enemy territory as a member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Mr Ivey, 93, said he had been working as a shepherd in the Ashley Gorge when he decided to volunteer as a wireless operator air gunner.

At a Levin training school

The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade extinguished two small hotspots which flared up following a large fire that surrounded a house on State Highway One, Bankside, on Wednesday. Deputy chief fire officer Tyrone Burrowes said the first hotspot ignited a tree at 9.14pm on Friday and the second occurred in some nearby roots at 2.26pm on Saturday. An appliance and tanker were sent both times, taking less than 30 minutes to douse each.

Scrub fire Fire crews from the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade spent an hour battling a scrub fire on Waimarama Rd at about 12pm yesterday. Chief fire officer Selwyn Allred said one appliance and a tanker attended the blaze, which caused no damage.An appliance from Alford Forest Voluntary Rural Fire Force also attended.

“We thought we might as well be killed by our own hands as anyone else’s,” Mr Ivey said.

But after plenty of close calls piloting his long range fighter bomber, Mr Ivey lived to return to Mid Canterbury, marry and raise two children. His secret to

survival had been simple.

“Keep breathing,” he said.

The French Legion of Honour was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte, and only 12 other New Zealanders have received it for their efforts in World War Two.

Four dead after weekend crashes Speed was the likely cause of a fatal smash in Auckland early yesterday morning that claimed the life of a 23-yearold woman, police say.

The woman’s death brought the weekend road toll up to four, after two motorcyclists and a teenage passenger died in three separate crashes.

Hotspots flare up

in a car that crashed into two parked cars.

The car, driven by an 18-yearold, had been heard speeding before the crash about 1.30am.

The driver and two other surviving passengers – both women, aged 18 and 23 – were taken to hospital. The woman died at the scene.

Two of the survivors were seriously injured, while the

third has since been released from hospital.

Police said speed was the likely cause of the crash. Earlier today, Senior Sergeant Matthew Knowsley said alcohol was also under consideration.

On Saturday, Trent Michael O’Connell, 17, died when the car he was a passenger in crossed the centre line of Omoto Valley Road, near

Greymouth, and collided with a truck about 12.30am.

Two other occupants of the car were taken to hospital with minor injuries and a police spokesman said charges against the driver were “pending”.

He said it appeared the car was on the wrong side of the road when the crash happened.

The truck driver was uninjured.

A man shot dead in the Kaingaroa Forest near Taupo yesterday had been part of a hunting party.

Police said a firearm was discharged and one man died shortly after 1pm. The accident happened in a remote forestry area. St John ambulance spokesman Mark Tregoweth said an ambulance crew was called out to “a young man with gunshot wounds”, but due to the remoteness of the area it was an hour before the crew arrived.

Sex assaults Police are asking for help from the public to find offenders after two separate sexual assaults in central Christchurch. In the first incident, a 21-year-old woman was driven to Peacock Street and assaulted about 10pm on Friday. Detective Sergeant Jeremy Gunn said the vehicle was described as a shiny red sedan, similar to a Holden Commodore with a spoiler on the boot. In the second incident, an 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by three occupants of a white van about 10.15pm on Friday.

Man stabbed

Cakes to cash Lovely weather and generous donations helped St David’s Union Church raise more than $6000 during their annual fair and garage sale on Saturday.

The fair featured stalls with cakes, plants, vegetables and second hand goods as well as children’s activities and a sausage sizzle.

Organiser Barry Vessey said this year’s fair was probably one of the best on record and the great weather certainly helped.

Most of the items available for sale had been given to the church by members of the community, he said. “I would like to thank the people for their generosity in donating the goods.’’

All the money raised would be going towards the general running of the church.

A 28-year-old man was critically injured when he was allegedly stabbed in the chest by his partner in Kawerau on Friday night. Senior Sergeant Karl Konlechner said it was a domestic incident and the man suffered life-threatening injuries. Police have arrested his 32-year-old partner, who faces a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The man was transferred to Waikato Hospital after being admitted into Whakatane Hospital. The woman is in custody and is set to appear in court next Wednesday.

Hundreds mourn Alex Hundreds of people gathered at the Waitarere Domain last night to mourn the tragic loss of Alex Fisher.

Many had decorated the roughly 220 bags that are set out to spell “Alex” and contain candles that are now being lit as the light fades.

Horowhenua mayor Brendan Duffy was among those who spoke to the people gathered.

“What an awful time to have to stand in front of my community and observe a tragedy that has impacted upon us all.”

Brenda Lineham, a friend of Alex’s family, thanked the community, police, search and rescuers and everyone who gave support and donations.

“Alex was such a loveable young man with a heart of gold. He had a cheeky grin and he loved nothing more than hanging with his family and his friends and riding his beloved motorbike.”

The family’s focus was on remembering him in a way he de-

served, Mrs Lineham said.

Manawatu area commander Inspector Sarah Stewart thanked Waitarere Beach locals and expressed condolences from police, some of whom were at the vigil.

Ms Stewart said communities can be like families and she’d seen such qualities here.

“I’m sure that the support for each other will continue and you will grow stronger.”

She reiterated that no information suggested there was any risk to others.

“It’s important for you to continue with your day-to-day lives without fear in what has always been a safe and welcoming community.”

Most who came to the vigil didn’t know Alex but they wanted to remember him.

“It could have been anybody’s child,” said Alison Waghorn, of Levin. “I’ve been in Levin 20 years and this is something you see on the news, but this time it’s come to town.”

Course set for Muddy Good Run Preparations are ramping up as this year’s Muddy Good Run draws closer.

With just one week to go until the big day, entries are flowing in and the course is starting to take shape.

Despite the theft of some equipment intended for the event, organiser John Moore

says the event is all set to run as normal.

“We’ve replaced the cargo nets, the camo nets, and everything we need,” he said.

“It should be pretty cool.”

It was hoped that the annual event would attract at least 800 entries.

With kids heading back to

school on Monday, Mr Moore was hoping to see a bump in the number of children entering.

“We’ve got about 200 kids at this stage, and we’re anticipating a hell of a lot more,” he said.

The Muddy Good Run will take place at the Rakaia Domain on October 18.

Macdonald seeks early release

Less chocolate and coffee, combined with more droughts and coastal erosion, are among potential effects of climate change that could affect Mid Cantabrians.

The green movement is lobbying for support as it prepares to take to the streets in Ashburton next month as part of a worldwide march for climate change.

Leading up to this in Ashburton on Saturday, Green Party Rangitata electorate convenor Gerrie Ligtenberg and member Marilyn Gilchrist gave out brochures at the Regent Cinema.

It was part of the party’s Worth Saving campaign, alongside associated pre-movie screenings of a climate change video clip.

Mrs Ligtenberg said she was heartened by the support, and many planned to fill out the brochure’s attached letter, seeking the Minister for Climate Change Issues to improve

The jailed brother-in-law of slain farmer Scott Guy is due to appear before the Parole Board this week.

Ewen Macdonald was acquitted of Guy’s murder at a 2012 trial, but was later jailed for five years after pleading guilty to a string of offences committed between December 2006 and January 2009.

His sentence is due to end on April 6, 2016.

Macdonald has been denied parole three times, and his fourth bid at parole is understood to be scheduled for a hearing in Christchurch this week.

NZME News Service sought to cover the hearing but, unlike Macdonald’s previous appearances, no media have been granted permission to cover his latest appearance.

The Parole Board said in its most recent decision, in November last year, that Macdonald’s “significant personality disturbance” made him an undue risk to the community.

More than 250 people from all over the South Island flocked to town for the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society Spring Poultry Auction at the Sports Hall yesterday.

Society president John Taylor said they received about 130 entries – slightly fewer than last year – but it was well supported by attendees and the good birds sold for high prices.

The chicken and egg sections were nearly all sold out. “It was a success all round.’’

Water use data will point way Stu Oldham

A

bandoning hosing restrictions during what scientists warn could be one of the hottest and driest summers in decades should give policymakers the data they need to make brave decisions about water use in Ashburton.

District councillors want to ditch restrictions this summer to get a better picture of how unmoderated water consumption would affect the town’s wells and, in turn, what that could mean for the council’s urban water policy.

The council would still impose water conservation measures if the wells dropped too far but councillors look prepared to let the town’s citizens decide how best to use the town’s water over some of the driest months of the year.

This contrasts with how the council has tackled water conservation in the past, when hosing restrictions were imposed to ensure the town’s wells were able to refill at a pace at least close to the pace at which they were drained.

Restrictions last year helped soften water use peaks across days and weeks, while public awareness of the restrictions helped, arguably, discourage excessive water use on the days where people could water their gardens.

It must have worked: there were no stories about people being fined and it seemed everyone got to use the water they needed, albeit when they were allowed to use it.

The latest proposal would let people use water whenever they wanted to give new data about the peaks and troughs of dry season demand.

This will give a much better base from which to plan for the future, helping educate how the council tackles water conservation education and helping to determine what free, unmoderated use should be tolerated before it becomes excessive.

Getting robust data will help determine whether restrictions remain the best way to manage water use or whether, say, real-time data collected by household water meters could make sure people pay when they use more than the data suggests they should.

he Government is committed to reducing crime and making New Zealand a safer place for all who live here.

A key issue when dealing with offenders being deported back to New Zealand from Australia has been obtaining reliable information about the individual and their current risk profile.

The Government has been working hard to remedy this situation and recently my colleague Minister of Police Michael Woodhouse and I, in my role as Justice Minister, were pleased to be able to confirm that officials here and in Australia have signed an information sharing arrangement with Australia regarding trans-Tasman deportations.

This development follows a commitment made in February by the New Zealand and Australian Prime Ministers to progress an arrangement covering information sharing and deportations.

The information gap that previously existed has been one of the barriers to ensuring that New Zealand agencies can effectively manage the risk of

offenders deported back to New Zealand. By having a fuller picture about the backgrounds of offenders who return to New Zealand, we will be in a stronger position to monitor and supervise those who pose a serious threat to the public.

This arrangement will provide New Zealand agencies with up to six months advance notice of potential upcoming deportations, and provide for the sharing of information prior to arrival that will help New Zealand better manage the return of New Zealand citizens such as criminal conviction records, summary of offences, case history, gang connections, fingerprints and photographs.

The information provided by Australia, combined with the register that I announced back in July will provide New Zealand authorities with greater oversight of who is arriving

here, and when.

This will give Police the information they need to make more informed assessments about the risks posed by deported offenders.

Now that the Trans-Tasman information sharing arrangement is in place with Australia, we will be able to progress a legislative supervision regime for offenders who are returned to New Zealand after recently serving a prison sentence overseas.

The intention of this new regime will be to provide essentially the same sort of oversight these offenders would have faced had they served their prison sentence in New Zealand.

Another initiative that Parliament is currently considering to try and help reduce the risk of known offenders committing further crimes is the estab-

lishment of New Zealand’s first Child Sex Offender Register.

The register will provide information to authorised Police and Corrections staff, which will help identify and manage the risk posed by convicted child sex offenders who have come to the end of their sentences, or some who are serving non-custodial sentences.

Based on the scale of offending, offenders will stay on the register for a term of life, 15 years, or eight years.

The register will not be publically available, but in cases where there is significant threat to the safety of children, information may be released to a third party such as a child’s parent, guardian or school principal.

The Government wants to do all it can to prevent the creation of further child victims of this abhorrent crime.

US to pay compo The Pentagon will pay compensation to those killed and injured by US airstrikes on a Doctors Without Borders hospital in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz. The group, known by its French acronym MSF, has demanded an independent international investigation. UK man wins big A British soldier has become an overnight multi-millionaire after winning more than £13.2 million ($NZ30.2 million) on a 25p (57 cents) stake. Jon Heywood, who has toured Afghanistan, won the fortune after placing his bet online.

Turkey mourns 95 dead Turkey is in mourning after at least 95 people were killed by suspected suicide bombers at a peace rally of leftist and proKurdish activists in Ankara the deadliest such attack in the country’s recent history.

The twin blasts, near Ankara’s main train station, ratcheted up tensions ahead of Turkey’s November 1 snap elections which were already soaring as the government wages an offensive on Kurdish militants.

Bodies of slain demonstrators were seen strewn across the ground after the explosions, with the banners they had been holding for the Work, Peace and Democracy march lying next to them.

The attack also left 246 wounded, 48 of whom are in

intensive care, according to an updated toll announced by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s office.

Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party, one of the groups that called for the peace rally, put the death toll at 128 in a tweet from their official account, but this figure was not confirmed by the government.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced what he called a “heinous attack” targeting “our unity and our country’s peace”.

Declaring three days of mourning, Davutoglu said there were “strong signs” the attack was carried out by two suicide bombers.

International condemnation of the bloodshed was swift.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed “sadness and dismay” over the attacks, while US President Barack Obama and Russia’s Vladimir Putin offered their condolences to Erdogan. There were scenes of chaos after the blasts, as ambulances raced to get to the wounded and police cordoned off the bloodstained area around the train station.

“We heard one huge blast and then one smaller explosion and then there was a great movement and panic. Then we saw corpses around the station,” said Ahmet Onen, 52.

“A demonstration that was to promote peace has turned into a massacre, I don’t understand this,” he said, sobbing.

Turkish police fired into the

air to disperse demonstrators angered by the deaths of their fellow activists at the anti-government peace rally, an AFP correspondent at the scene reported.

Davutoglu said no one had claimed responsibility for the bombings but that groups including Islamic State jihadists, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and the far-left Revolutionary People’s Liberation PartyFront were capable of carrying out such an attack.

Amateur footage filmed moments before the blasts and broadcast on NTV television showed smiling activists holding hands and dancing before suddenly falling to the ground as a huge explosion went off behind them.

Fire kills 10 travellers in Ireland Ten people are now known to have died, including a baby and children, after a pre-dawn fire at a site in Dublin housing members of the traveller community.

“We can confirm 10 fatalities now,” an Irish police spokesman said after the weekend fire, but he could not say how many were children.

Members of two related families are believed to have died,

including a baby as young as six months old.

“Unfortunately a husband and wife, their four sons and baby daughter and other relations are lost,” said Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny.

“It’s such an unspeakable tragedy to have an entire family wiped out in a horrific inferno,” he added.

A number of other people were taken to hospital after in-

haling smoke at the site made up of caravans and prefabricated buildings.

Dublin Fire Service said it was too early to establish the cause of the fire in the south Dublin suburb of Carrickmines.

A police source said the fire did not appear suspicious but that a forensic investigation was under way to discover the cause and how it spread.

Higgins described the incident as a “dreadful tragedy”.

The Southside Traveller Action Group, which offers support to travellers in the area, said the community was “in a state of shock at the devastating” events.

People left homeless by the fire will be accommodated by authorities in Dublin, the group said in a statement.

Forty people are still missing following last week’s deadly mudslides outside Guatemala City that killed 264 people. “At this time we have 264 bodies and are continuing to search for 40 people who are still missing,” Julio Sanchez, spokesman for volunteer firefighters and other rescue workers at the site of the disaster, said.

Truck accident kills 13 At least 13 people have died and 20 have been hurt in a truck rollover on a highway in the Cuban province of Camaguey, state media reports say. The shortage of buses on the island nation has caused trucks to be used to carry passengers, in conditions that are often unsafe and have caused frequent accidents, particularly in rural areas.

Chad blasts kill 37 Three explosions have killed 37 people in a Chadian city on the shores of Lake Chad, in the latest atrocity blamed on the Nigerian jihadist group Boko Haram. Another 52 people were reportedly wounded in the attacks, one targeting the fish market at Baga Sola and the other two occurring at a refugee camp on the outskirts of the city. It was the first time Baga Sola was hit by such an attack, and the belief that it was relatively safe had led tens of thousands of Nigerian refugees and Chadians displaced by Boko Haram violence to seek shelter there.

Restaurant explosion At least 17 people have been killed in an explosion that ripped through a restaurant in eastern China, state media reports say.

A gas cylinder exploded in a restaurant in the city of Wuhu in Anhui province, causing a fire, the state-run Xinhua news agency said yesterday. Similar explosions happen relatively often in China, where safety regulations are often laxly enforced.

Why it’s time to return to Egypt

The Great Sphinx and the pyramids of Giza are among the most recognisable symbols of the civilisation of ancient Egypt.

Courtney Bonnell gets back on the camel in Egypt, where a once-thriving tourism industry has been plummeting.

W

hen I told people I planned to visit Egypt, family, friends - even waiters - replied, “Wow!” and “Amazing!”

But their eyes said, “Are you insane?”

Egypt’s once-thriving tourism industry has been plummeting since the 2011 popular uprising that ousted long-time autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Recent attacks have added to the uncertainty: the mistaken killings of eight Mexican tourists by government security forces, a bombing outside the Italian Consulate in Cairo, a foiled attack on the famed Karnak Temple.

Each headline brought a flood of texts from loved ones.

Yes, I saw the news, I responded. I endlessly trolled TripAdvisor, searching “Is it safe to go to Egypt?” even after booking with a highly rated tour company. My stomach did some flips on the plane, until I spotted the pyramids from the air.

There are no safety guarantees in a restive country like Egypt - or anywhere. But with a guide by my side, I never felt unsafe. Plus, I was too exhausted from sightseeing to wander around on my own.

The guides manoeuvre you through Cairo’s heart-stopping traffic - where lanes are merely suggestions and tapping the bumpers of merging cars is commonplace - and allow you to bypass hassles elsewhere.

For example, my guide took me straight to the camel-ride operator he trusts near the pyramids, avoiding what he said would be a raucous, grasping crowd prone to physically pulling the arms of those approaching on their own.

Instead, I hopped right on the animal, a 10-year-old boy took the reins and we set out into the sun-drenched desert alone. I was nervous the camel might toss me off with a kid in control, but no problems materialised and I was able to re-

create a photo I saw every day on the wall of my childhood home: my father on camelback in the dusty desert circa 1980.

My guides also took pro photos, key for a solo traveller like me. The boy expertly posed me, telling me to hold out my finger to make it look like I was touching the top of a pyramid. My Cairo guide snapped me sitting on the steps of the Great Pyramid and instructed me to pose so I appeared to kiss the Sphinx.

Every guide, driver and other worker dependent on tourists and tips was eager to please, pressing me to drink enough water and taking me to government-run shops for authentic, beautiful gifts, including handpainted papyrus and hand-chiselled statuettes.

You still haggled, but it was nothing like the relentless street touts, who joke, cajole and harass tourists into buying cheap wares.

at major attractions won’t allow sellers to get overly aggressive with visitors, but vendors were pushy, especially with tourism ebbing so dramatically. You can say, “No, thank you,” ignore them and keep walking, but at the cultural sites, where you have to traverse a gauntlet of shops, there’s no avoiding them.

It helped that I’d prepared for the worst when it came to street vendors, traffic and even the crushing poverty. Through the window of my Cairo hotel, I saw half-completed apartment buildings, twisting metal on their roofs awaiting new floors.

Rubbish piled up and spilled into the city’s polluted section of the Nile, left for thin horses and donkeys to nibble.

It also was odd to stand in Tahrir Square across from the Egyptian Museum, ground zero for the revolution, in an area where hotels and businesses still haven’t recovered.

The green plot seemed small compared with its significance.

No easy path - Cheika

By Joe Barton Having secured the less treacherous path to World Cup glory, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika continued to play down the benefits of finishing top of Pool A. Australia’s gutsy 15-6 win over Wales yesterday sealed top spot in the pool, setting up a clash with world No.9 Scotland next Monday.

Meanwhile, Wales face a quarter-final against the resurgent Springboks and a potential semi-final with world champions New Zealand.

However Cheika wasn’t taking any joy from landing on the opposite side of the draw to Australia’s top Rugby Championship rivals.

“I know that people like to make comments based on whatever rankings (there are) but at the end of the day there’s no favourable side of the draw,” he said.

“The only favour is that you’re in it, you’re still there.

“That’s the only good bit about

it. They’re all tough games now.

They’re all knockout.

“You can’t get away with a bad game and then make it up in your pool somewhere.

“All the way through that’s been spoken about, and I don’t believe that’s the case.”

Cheika has repeatedly pointed to the stunning upsets already this tournament, notably Japan’s shock victory over South Africa, as proof nobody should be underestimated.

He was quick to note Scotland’s impressive recent record, with the tartan army boasting victories in two of their past three matches against Australia.

“You don’t need to look very hard at some of the other results to think that any opponent is easier or harder,” he said.

“Australia has lost to Scotland the last couple of times and maybe that’s because they thought (it would be easier).

“What I do know is that Vern Cotter is a very clever coach.

“He’s got a very strong plan and I’m sure he’ll have them

Champion flanker David Pocock knows better than most what it takes to win quarter-finals - he produced the match of his life four years ago against South Africa which the Wallabies won 11-9.

And he expects Scotland to aim up next weekend.

“They’ve got huge capability and we’re moving into the knockout stages, so we know we’ve got to improve for another big one next weekend for sure,” Pocock said.

Meanwhile, Will Genia initially feared his sin-binning would cost Australia victory in their crucial Rugby World Cup clash against Wales, but a “gutted” Wallabies halfback insists he’d commit the same foul if put in an identical situation.

Genia was shown a yellow card in the 57th minute when he tackled Wales No.9 Gareth Davies, who had taken a quick tap and was scampering towards the Australian tryline.

It was a cynical foul, and Genia knew it.

But after Australia’s 15-6 victory at Twickenham, he insists he’d do it again.

“I would. I watched the replay on the big screen and it’s one of those ones ... he’s five metres out and if I don’t make that tackle there’s absolutely no one behind me, so he’s going to score,” Genia said.

One happy punter The Wallabies made at least one New Zealander very happy even if the Australians are now worrying Kiwi fans with how well they are playing at this World Cup. A punter won $39,005 when the Australians won yesterday’s pool of death decider over Wales. The result completed a massive 130,000 per cent return for the punter after his punt all started with a $30 multi-bet seven months ago. The punter correctly picked five half/full time doubles in the Super Rugby and Six Nations’ competitions, a winning team and margin and a points start in the Crusaders v Lions match. - NZME

Try a forwards’ call Like Corporal Jones from Dad’s Army, Vern Cotter’s message to his Scotland troops was “don’t panic”.

The Scots duly held their nerve and with a late try secured a 36-33 victory of Samoa to confirm their place in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Home semi secured

Mid Canterbury have secured a home Meads Cup semi-final against Wanganui after sneaking past a plucky North Otago 39-36 at the Whitestone Contracting Stadium in Oamaru on Saturday.

South Canterbury kept their place at the top of the points table with a convincing 62-19 win over Poverty Bay in Gisborne, while the Hammers finished one point behind in second place, followed by Wanganui in third and Wairarapa Bush in fourth spot.

Fullback Andrew Letham put Mid Canterbury’s first points on the board with a penalty four minutes in on Saturday, but North Otago were quick to reply through stalwart midfielder Lemi Masoe.

The 35-year-old wrong-footed Mid Canterbury’s defence to cross over in the corner and Ben Palmer collected the extras from his conversion.

Letham returned fire with another penalty, but Palmer slotted a penalty to put the Old Golds 10-6 ahead.

Mid Canterbury began to dictate play, with North Otago struggling to contain the Meads Cup holders before Murray Williams’ well-weighted grubber kick was gathered by centre Matt Thatcher, who touched down under the posts for the Hammers’ first try.

Mid Canterbury maintained the pressure from the kick-off and began to force errors from the young North Otago team.

Williams was heavily involved again in the Hammers’ second try with a perfectlytimed off load to prop Tama Tuirirangi, who crashed over.

Letham slotted the conversion to extend the lead to 10 points for a 20-10 score at the interval.

In the second half, it took less than five minutes for Mid Canterbury to break though as wing-turned-flanker Seta Koroitamana dotted down in the corner, but Letham failed to convert from an awkward angle.

North Otago continued to play expansive rugby with plenty of confidence and speed.

He captained the team, but the lingering memories of his form will be the dropped balls and a yellow card. This is not Kieran Read as we know him, not the dominant No8 who was World Rugby’s Player of the Year in 2013. There was a flicker of the old venom in New Zealand’s opener against Argentina with his full array of carries, offloads and lineout options. But he dipped against the muscular Tongans, when his handling in contact and under the high ball deserted him.

Otago on the charge It was a dead rubber with plenty of life. And at the end Otago had a confidence boosting 43 - 30 victory over Bay of Plenty, going into what will be a more more exacting test in the ITM Cup championship semi-final in Wellington on Saturday night.

Bay of Plenty will be licking their wounds before their semifinal against Hawkes Bay in Napier, although they put up a spirited rearguard action when facing a huge defeat in Dunedin.

Letham was successful from his conversion for a 39-24 lead with 20 minutes remaining, but North Otago refused to go quietly.

A sustained period of pressure resulted in centre Aleki Morris finding space to go over in the corner, but Palmer failed to convert.

With seconds left to play, North Otago attacked with the same energy as the opening 10 minutes, and were rewarded with a try from replacement halfback Kilifi Fangupo at the death before Palmer added the extras with the last kick of the contest for a 39-36 score line.

It’s déjà vu for North Harbour. They have matched their fifth position in the Championship from 2014, but they made heavy work of it against the hapless Northland Taniwha in Albany yesterday.

The bonus point 36-21 win, only sealed when replacement hooker Ray Niuia plunged over, meant they leapfrogged Southland on the log, but will not erase the disappointment of missing the semi-finals yet again. Northland have just endured the first winless NPC season since Counties Manukau in 2007.

World No.2 Jason Day, had a disappointing event and lost his singles match 3 and 2 to British Open champion Zach Johnson. The US have now won nine of 11 Presidents Cup clashes.

Marshall on the outer Benji Marshall doesn’t fit - at the moment - with the new culture being created within the Kiwis. That’s the view of Kiwis selector Tawera Nikau, who said in the past “Benji was probably more about Benji and not the team”. The continued absence of the Dragons five-eighth has been one of the major talking points in the build-up to the England tour. He has been in good form for St George and, without Shaun Johnson, Kieran Foran and Thomas Leuluai, was New Zealand’s only experienced playmaker in the halves. But Marshall was not picked and, listening to Nikau, it seems no matter what, there probably wouldn’t have been room for the former Golden Boot. - NZME

Sunshine greets cricketers

Senior cricket returned on Saturday, albeit the short form, as Allenton, Methven, Coldstream, Technical and Lauriston competed in the Twenty20 tournament.

Lauriston B were unable to field a side, so only four matches were played over two rounds.

In round one, Allenton hosted Methven and took a nine wicket win with the visitors’ batting display leaving a lot to be desired.

Methven won the toss and elected to bat but were all out for a paltry 67 in the 16th over.

Dave Maw top-scored for Methven with 14 while Matt Tait was the best with the ball for Allenton, taking 3 for 13 off his four overs.

Allenton chased down the meagre total in the seventh over, with Jordan Bird posting 45 off 25 deliveries.

Also in round one, Coldstream fell to a 10 wicket loss to the Tech Stags after being all

out for a modest 80 in the 19th over, before Tech surpassed the total in the ninth over without losing a wicket.

Allenton locked horns with Tech Stags in round two and fell to a five wicket loss, while Coldstream toppled Lauriston.

Tech won the toss and put Allenton in to bat first, and they were all out for 117 in the 17th over.

Jack Meyrick recorded 25 to top score with the bat for Allenton, while Matt Winter

was Tech’s most economical bowler, taking 3 for 16 off four overs.

Tech chased down the total in the 15th over for a five wicket victory, thanks to Henry Cook (28) and Winter’s (28) contribution to joint top-score.

Coldstream made amends for their earlier hiding against Tech by taking a 43 run win over Lauriston in round two.

Coldstream’s total of 125 proved too tall of an order for Lauriston, who were all out for 82.

Pink ball passes first test in the twilight By andrew alderson The pink ball’s chances of passing muster at test level look rosy.

Its gaudiness means visibility for players and spectators won’t be an issue if the open wicket practices this week at Seddon Park were a gauge.

The fluorescent ball assaults the retina like a piece of ostentatious costume jewellery.

Its chances of providing gems to sustain day-night tests by further prising open subcontinent broadcasting markets are also positive for administrators.

But batsmen might be the biggest beneficiaries.

The shift to pink-ball test cricket could mimic the transition Kerry Packer’s original rebels undertook when transferring to white-ball day-nighters in the late 1970s.

Modern professionals have played day-night cricket from domestic level up.

This next adjustment might not justify the panic that the game’s most sacred format might be subject to change for commercial objectives.

The ground was ablaze in so much light that the transition into the evening session appeared smooth.

FIFA sinks into chaos UEFA chief Michel Platini has appealed against a 90-day ban slapped on him over an ongoing corruption probe, as FIFA gears up for a crunch meeting over its raging sleaze crisis.

The news comes a day after president Sepp Blatter also launched an appeal against a similar 90-day ban from all football-related activities over a Swiss criminal inquiry. The 60-year-old Platini, a frontrunner to succeed Blatter as chief of football’s scandal-tainted world governing body, denies any wrongdoing in taking a $US2 million payment from FIFA in 2011.

Phoenix lose first-up In the darkest depths of Ernie Merrick’s nightmares, the script for a hypothetical season-opener would have resembled what transpired last night in Wellington.

The Phoenix fell to an agonising 2-1 defeat against the Newcastle Jets in their first game of the new A-League campaign, suffering through 90 minutes that contained all the elements of a horror show.

There was the loss of captain Andrew Durante to injury. And then there was Roy Krishna’s missed penalty. It’s probably best they focus instead on next weekend’s trip to Perth.

Grobler takes national title

Draw wraps up Hatch Cup tourney

Cornelius Grobler is the first Ashburton boxer to win a national title since 1984, after winning the elite 69kg division at New Zealand Boxing Championships in Invercargill.

Grobler, who is undefeated in nine bouts at the 69kg weight class, fought Matthew Heap in his first fight of the tournament.

Grobler proved too elusive for Heap, utilising his speed to land plenty of damaging punches, and won all three rounds.

Heap was caught with a hefty shot and given a standing eight count late in the third as Grobler outclassed his opponent with some slick combinations.

Grobler then took on North Harbour’s Tameana Puhi in the semi-final and produced another exceptional performance.

The South African peppered Puhi with shots throughout the fight.

The North Islander received standing eight counts in all three rounds before his corner threw in the towel during another punishing combination from Grobler.

The final was an all-Canterbury affair, with Grobler facing Christchurch’s Richard Robinson.

Robinson was warned twice for holding as he struggled to deal with the Ashburton 30-year-old’s hand speed before Grobler was awarded the point’s decision to extend his record to 27 wins from 35 fights.

Grobler said his stick and move style caused Robinson plenty of problems, but credited his opponent for a tough fight.

“It wasn’t an easy fight, I just had to fight clever.

“I turned him all the time, twice he was warned for holding and if he was told a third time he’d be deducted points,” he said.

“I just picked my shots off one by one and had two or three combos and ran away and won all three rounds.”

Lowndes notches up his sixth Bathurst

By Laine CLark Holden veteran Craig Lowndes has won his sixth Bathurst 1000 title at Mount Panorama yesterday.

Lowndes - with co-driver Steven Richards - completed the epic 161-lap enduro more than a second ahead of Ford’s Mark Winterbottom and Steve Owen.

Holden’s Garth Tander and Warren Luff were third.

It marked a record 13th Bathurst podium for the 41-yearold Lowndes, leapfrogging fel-

low greats Peter Brock, Larry Perkins and Jim Richards.

Lowndes last conquered the mountain in 2010.

He joins Perkins and Mark Skaife on six Bathurst wins.

Only Peter Brock (nine) and Jim Richards (seven) have savoured more.

However, defending V8 series champion Jamie Whincup again left Mount Panorama a frustrated man.

A second-placed Whincup was sensationally dropped to the back of the field with 20 laps left after being penalised

for overtaking a safety car.

Whincup finished 18th.

V8 series leader Winterbottom launched a gutsy fightback after receiving two black flag penalties following electrical problems that disrupted his brake lights.

It was a shot in the arm for Winterbottom’s Prodrive Racing team, winner of the last two Great Races.

They were already without their defending champion Chaz Mostert after his horror qualifying crash on Friday.

The Ford team then lost

their Super Black Racing duo of Andre Heimgartner and Ant Pedersen after they hit the Mountain Straight wall on lap 36.

Unbelievably they were almost another team down after the all-female duo in their garage hit the Forrest’s Elbow wall on lap 15.

Somehow the team got the first all female team at Bathurst since 1998 - Renee Gracie and Simona de Silvestro - back out by the lap 55 deadline and they completed the race, albeit in last place.

Mid Canterbury’s under-13 boys’ hockey team place joint 15th overall at the Hatch Cup in Timaru after holding Counties Manukau to a 1-1 stalemate in their last match on Saturday.

The under 13s mixed it with the best sides in the country and performed well throughout the competition after kicking off with a 2-0 win over Nelson last Monday.

North Harbour were up next and downed James Tavendale’s side 2-0, despite a valiant effort from Mid Canterbury.

In match three, Mid Canterbury locked horns with South Canterbury, having previously lost 3-0 and 2-1 to the old enemy this season, a much improved display meant the two sides could not be separated in a 1-1 stalemate.

Mid Canterbury faced an impressive Bay of Plenty team on Wednesday and fell to a 3-0 loss, but came back in style for their final pool match against Southland, where a draw or win would book a place in the competition’s middle eight.

Mid Canterbury chose to play in to a howling nor-wester in the first half and the southerners took a 2-0 lead in to the sheds at the interval.

The green and golds came out firing in the second half, scoring twice to level proceedings and book a place in the competition’s middle eight for the first time in recent memory.

After finishing fourth in Pool D with a win, two draws and two losses, Mid Canterbury met the strong hockey region of Manawatu, where they fell to a narrow 1-0 loss before narrowly losing out 1-0 to Northland in their penultimate match.

Mid Canterbury ended the tournament with a strong performance to hold Counties Manukau to a 1-1 on Saturday.

Tavendale said he was proud of his players’ efforts and performances against some of New Zealand’s best under-13 teams.

“It was pretty outstanding, the boys were absolutely pumped, as they should be, realistically they could have finished between 9th and 16th, some things just didn’t go our way but the boys should be proud of themselves,” he said.

In the Collier Trophy in Palmerston North, the girls’ under 13 Mid Canterbury side fell to six losses before downing Marlborough 2-1 to finish in 23rd place.

Sampson proves too strong Sampson took his trainer Howie Mathews by surprise at Hawera with a tenacious victory that opened a campaign aimed at a two mile challenge.

The determined six-yearold was having his first start in Saturday’s Kaponga Hotel Egmont Cup since he suffered a heart fibrillation when out of the money at Trentham in January.

“He had all the checks and a cardiograph done and he came through with flying colours, but I didn’t really expect him to win though,” trainer Howie Mathews said.

Sampson is a noted frontrunner, but rider Lisa Allpress was instructed to ease out of any speed duels and she had Sampson travelling well in midfield.

Breakers rebound It’s safe to say the Breakers bounced back nicely after the season-opening defeat - all it took was another triple-double from Cedric Jackson.

The defending championed found the increase in energy they were seeking and levelled their early ledger at 1-1 against the Crocs yesterday, with Jackson grabbing a late rebound to secure his fourth triple-double for the club.

The final score was 89-81.

The point guard clearly enjoyed being back among the friendly confines of Vector Arena, helping his side overcome the pre-game loss of Mika Vukona through injury.

Jackson led an offence that noticeably lifted in tempo from a rusty effort in Wednesday night’s defeat in Adelaide, finishing with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists.

Jackson was far from alone in shining after the Breakers unveiled their fourth championship in the Vector Arena rafters, with the shots once again falling.

After a horror night from beyond the arc, they managed 10-from-19 as a team, with Everard Bartlett and Reuben Te Rangi filling the offensive hole left by Corey Webster.

And having lost their leader in Vukona - whose absence with a strained glute saw a league-leading streak of 211 consecutive games snapped - the Breakers would have been especially buoyed by the return from Tom Abercrombie and Alex Pledger.

Abercrombie had 11 points as six Breakers reached double figures, led by Bartlett’s 19.

The temporary replacement’s shooting touch was integral as the Breakers bossed the game from the opening tip, with his third triple of the first half beating the buzzer and giving his side a 10-point buffer to take into the major break.

Forklift experience would be an advantage but not essential, some heavy lifting would be required.

Cedric Jackson was instrumental in the Breakers getting home over the Townsville Crocs yesterday.

An early 8-0 run saw the home side building on a strong defensive base to allow their offence to break quickly down court and make some easy baskets, with Cedric Jackson flourishing when playing both creator and finisher.

Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the first half was an encouraging cameo off the bench from Alex Pledger, with the big man grabbing eight quick points while moving freely as he continues to recover from his off-season foot surgery.

The Crocs continued to snap at the Breakers’ heels in the third but a much improved defensive effort prevented the visitors from ever pulling within five, while some sweet shooting from Bartlett and Te Rangi helped pad the advantage.

While the Breakers were never able to pull away against a Townsville side touted as the bookies’ favourite for the wooden spoon, Dean Vickerman would have been quite content with the strides made ahead of Wednesday night’s trip to the Illawarra Hawks, and former Breakers favourite son Kirk Penney.

The round-robin stage of the Heartland Championship season is over, with Mid Canterbury finishing in second place on the

ladder to secure a home semifinal with a tally of seven wins and one loss.

The Hammers finished one point below South Canterbury, who also recorded seven wins and

a solitary defeat, but edged out Grant Keenan’s side for the top spot with an extra bonus point.

Mid Canterbury will welcome third place Wanganui to the Ashburton Showgrounds on

Saturday while South Canterbury host Wairarapa Bush, who finished fourth, in Timaru in the opposite Meads Cup semi-final.

Horowhenua Kapiti are the top qualifiers for the Lochore

Cup, despite falling to a 44-31 loss to Buller on Saturday, and will face North Otago in the semi-final while King Country host Buller in the other Lochore Cup semi-final in Te Kuiti.

All Blacks heading into quarterfinal territory eyes wide open

BY GREGOR PAUL The one thing that won’t happen this week is the All Blacks being sucker-punched by the unexpected.

They are coming into their quarter-final with their eyes wide open: with the firm knowledge they are walking into a

cauldron where just about anything could happen.

If it’s the French they end up facing they could pull just about anything out of the magic hat they seem to only locate when they are playing the All Blacks at a World Cup. If it’s Ireland, the All Blacks will have much the same view.

The All Blacks learned in 2013 that Ireland are not like the old Ireland: they have got a bit more to them than the wild anger.

What the All Blacks also know, eight years too late perhaps, but they still know it, is that the referee could melt down and lose the plot. Decisions that should be made, might not.

In 2007 the All Blacks had no idea what to do about that. Now they don’t necessarily know how to react per se, but they are aware they will have to do something.

This is the big difference between now and 2007 - the last time the All Blacks had to play a quarterfinal away from home.

They have spent weeks,

months and in some cases even years planning for this moment.

For a handful of players - Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith - this could be their last test.

Their desperation to ensure it’s not will be a factor in driving their performance to levels it so far hasn’t reached.
