Armistice Day – a time of reflection for many BY LINDA CLARKE

Mid Canterbury families who sent their sons to war were remembered yesterday at an Armistice Day service in Ashburton. On November 11, 98 years ago, the Allied nations and Germany signed an armistice agreement to bring World War One to an end. Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said one-tenth of New Zealand’s population at the time served overseas and the war had long-lasting impacts for all families, including those who lived in Mid Canterbury. A local widow Harriett Sutton sent five sons to fight in the war, only three returned. A tree planted in the Ashburton Domain commemorates her sons and all those who fought in the war. “It is hard to comprehend sending five children into an intense war zone knowing there was a high chance they might never return,” Favel told the 60 people who gathered before the Ashburton cenotaph in Baring Square to mark Armistice Day yesterday. “This day commemorates the bravery of families like the Suttons and their contribution to world peace.” She said the fact that young people continued to visit battlefields of past wars showed they were interested in history and the sacrifice

A second strike is planned in the coming weeks as junior doctors are still not satisfied with their work hours. Resident doctors will once again walk off the job for 48 hours, starting at 7am on November 23 and finishing at 7am on November 25. The doctors are striking to protest unfair work hours. Currently they can work up to 12 days in a row or 10 consecutive nights, and a shift can last up to 16 hours. The New Zealand resident Doctors Association is asking for the
maximum consecutive days to be lowered to 10, and night shifts lowered to four. David Meates, Canterbury District Health Board (DHB) Chief Executive said the Canterbury Health System is preparing for the second planned strike by members of the NZRDA. During the last strike, all eight of Ashburton’s resident doctors participated, Canterbury DHB employs 487 Resident Medical Officers across the district and during the last strike only 145, or about 30 per cent, came into work. The last strike between October 18 and 19 resulted in Canterbury DHB having to postpone and re-
book 181 elective surgeries and procedures, and 444 outpatient appointments. “Like all District Health Boards, the Canterbury DHB is in the early stages of contingency planning with the focus on ensuring safe care during the 48-hour strike period, when most RDA members are expected to withdraw their services,” Meates said. Meates said providing safe care for patients during the strike is the highest priority for people working in the Canterbury Health System. “The DHB is prioritising essential and acute services, and so some elective surgeries and out-
patient appointments are being rescheduled.” “People with appointments or surgery booked during the strike period can expect to hear from Canterbury DHB about whether they are affected or not,” he said. During the strike the Christchurch emergency department will remain open, for other instances the DHB is asking people to phone their doctor first, unless it is life threatening. For after-hours calls, people are advised to still ring their GP, where they will be put onto a nurse who can offer free health advice and can tell you what do if you need to be seen urgently.

Muller was first elected in 2014. He’s currently the deputy chairman of parliament’s education and science committee and is a member of the foreign affairs, defence and trade committee. Mid Canterbury farmers were amongst the stars when the Canterbury A&P Association held its 154th show over the past three days. Sheep farmer Stuart Sinclair and dairy farmer Peter Gilbert both took home ribbons for outstanding stock; the Sinclair family breeds Suffolk, South Suffolk and Cheviot sheep while the Gilberts run a Jersey herd and stud started in the family four generations ago. They were among a host of Mid Canterbury rural folk helping showcase the best of farming in the region to around 100,000 largely city-based visitors. Amongst the special guests were Prime Minister John Key, Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy and All Black legend Richie McCaw. Guy said the show played a huge part in connecting rural and urban communities. He had more good news for drought-affected North Canterbury farmers, who were smiling about rain that had recharged the top 25mm of soil on their parched properties. The Ministry for Primary Indus-

only game in town. He said India and the Gulf States were among potential markets as middle income earners there consumed more protein. India, with a population of 1.26 billion people, represented an opportunity for farming exports. “If they can grow their economy over time, that is a lot of people to buy products out of New Zealand and they cannot be self-sufficient because they don’t have the climate or the capacity.” He told farmers there would be a huge amount of protein needed around the world. Methven farmer Craige Mackenzie was part of the future farming presentation, talking about how precision agriculture – using technology to apply water, fertiliser and other farm inputs at the right time and at exactly the right amount – would be an important tool in making sure land and waterways were preserved and enhanced for now and future generations.
Climate change hits aquifer levels By Sue NewmaN

Farmers are being unfairly blamed for the declining levels in Mid Canterbury’s aquifers, says IrrigationNZ chief executive Andrew Curtis. That reaction is an overly simplistic response to a larger, climatically induced problem, he said. Mayfield residents have blamed the proliferation of wells for onfarm irrigation for the rapid decline in water levels in the well that supplies their village with water. The Ashburton District Council put the village on level four water restrictions about two weeks ago. This means hoses cannot be used. Water use is limited to cooking and bathing. It also told residents that it
would be moving a mobile water treatment plant on site. If the well level dropped below a usable level, water would be taken from a nearby creek, treated and then pumped to homes. While some residents were satisfied that New Zealand drinking water standards would ensure the water was free from contaminants and safe to drink, others were outraged that people would be forced to drink the same water used by animals. John Moore, who paid to have the village well sunk, said when the bore was put down four years ago to 118 metres, there was a good supply of water. Mass irrigation around the district had been responsible for dwindling well levels, he said.
He believes people are looking at the problem from one angle only and not getting the bigger picture. “We’re sucking the district dry,” Moore said. Curtis, however, believes the killer for the aquifers has been three winters of little rainfall and low snow levels. While late spring saw increases in rainfall, the months preceding this were very dry and the cumulative impact of three winters of low recharge is now showing underground, he said. “People look at the recent rain and think the aquifers should be bouncing back, but it doesn’t work like that. Aquifer recharge is a relatively slow moving process. For the Mayfield area it’s very much driv-
en by winter rainfall. With three dry winters behind us, we were always going to have to be careful about water use coming into this season. In fact, local groundwater irrigators are also facing exactly the same issues.” Farmers in the Mayfield area were not using ground water; their supply was alpine water from the Rangitata or Rakaia rivers, Curtis said. “The bigger picture is that we have been close to drought for three years and many water resources are under pressure.” Irrigation NZ had developed a programmed called SMART Irrigation practice and technology and by using this some irrigators are actually reducing the water they applied, he said.
“We advise irrigators only to apply water when necessary, to ensure they manage their water allocation sensibly. We certainly don’t want to see anyone wasting water and want to reassure the public that with careful and prudent use, irrigation within current allocation levels can be sustainable.” There had been a slow start to this year’s irrigation season because of colder and wetter conditions and that meant lower demand, he said. “We can understand that people are upset about the decline in their local aquifer but the bigger picture is we need to plan for climate change and the likely impacts on aquifer recharge. We need to be looking at how we use science to provide us with solutions.”

With exams under way, a successful year is drawing to an end for the head students of Mount Hutt College. Head boy and girl Bailey Kinvig and Brooke Sandys reflected on their last year of high school and how it will affect them going into their careers. The head students are appointed through a student and teacher vote then interviewed by the previous year’s head students and the principal and represent their fellow year 13s. Head girl Brooke Sandys said she had mixed emotions because she was happy with her awards but also it was drawing closer to the end of the school year. She said she felt that way because she was sad that school was ending but she was also excited going into next year. Sandys won Best All-Round Girl, Merit in Statistics, the Principal’s Award for Head Girl, the Diana Limbrick Family Cup for Excellence and the Snowfed Prize for English during Monday’s prizegiving. Sandys will be starting at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts in August 2017. She said she believes the new head students will be great next year. “I know that they’re going to do an amazing job and I hope

Woman’s injuries mystify Police investigating how a woman was critically hurt say she had injuries that weren’t consistent with a car accident. Inspector Mark Rowbottom said police were sent to an address in Waiuku yesterday morning after several members of the public called police to say they had seen a car in a paddock. Responding officers were the first to spot the woman lying near her car, a white Subaru Leg-

The woman, in her 20s, lived locally in Franklin, Rowbottom said. It’s understood the woman had stab wounds. She was in a critical condition when she was airlifted to hospital. Rowbottom said police were seeking sightings of the woman’s station wagon. “Our investigation is still in its early stages and we are also
trying to piece together the circumstances of how she came to be in the paddock and how she sustained her injuries.” Forensic staff were looking at the car when the Herald arrived at the scene. They were also searching the paddock. Police said the incident was not linked to a search for a man in the same town Thursday night. - NZME
Two men have been charged with the murder of South Aucklander Clayton Ratima. The men appeared in court yesterday. Clayton Ratima was dropped off at Middlemore Hospital on February 21 by Tribesman Motorcycle gang members. He had injuries consistent with having been severely assaulted. He died three days later. “The family and friends of Mr Ratima have been told this morning about the arrests we’ve made,” said Detective Inspector F’aa Vaaelua, Counties Manukau Police. “They’re appreciative of the result achieved by the investigation team.” - NZME
Gang member in court Tribal Huk Waikato gang leader Jamie Pink has appeared in court after being charged with possessing offensive weapons. Pink, whose full name is Allan James Pink, was arrested last Saturday and charged with unlawful possession of an axe and a studded baseball bat. He was remanded on bail without plea to reappear in court on Wednesday. He was ordered not to posses any weapons in a public place. Pink and his gang have been in the news recently after Pink declared he was going to rid Ngaruawahia of P. The gang are also known for their making of sandwiches for Waikato school children. -NZME

Living with diabetes is not the end of the world for one Ashburton local. Graham Woodham, 75, has been living with the disease for the better part of seven years, and said it doesn’t hold him back. He was diagnosed with Type Two diabetes at 68 and said while it was initially a shock to him, he now is able to control it. Type Two diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and is usually diagnosed later in life however there are more and more teenagers getting the disease. Woodham takes insulin injections as well as oral medication to manage his blood sugar levels and

he said some days his levels are high and some days they’re low. However he said he doesn’t tend to feel much of a difference from normal when the levels fluctuate. Woodham also has to have a check done on his eyes every year as well as a three-monthly lab test
to make sure everything is still working properly. The disease doesn’t stop him leading a normal life he said, he can still enjoy going to the pool club at the RSA and eat what he wants, as long as it’s in moderation.

Woodham said with diabetes you have to cut back on alcohol but he was never much of a drinker in the first place. But a big thing with keeping his blood sugar level under control is to make sure he keeps on schedule and eats at the same
time every day. He said it helps to ensure he can manage his levels without changing when he takes his medication. “It’s a thing of balance, but I’m managing because I’m retired, I found it a bit difficult when I was working,” Woodham said.

Four weeks after losing the Ashburton mayoralty, Angus McKay is well on the way to carving out a new path in life for himself. He admits not retaining the position was a disappointment, but when you’re a politician of any persuasion, that’s an eventuality you have to prepare for each and every election. A month down the track he says he’s happy just being Angus McKay without the mayoral title and said he’s busy catching up on the dozens of jobs he’s left undone for the past six years. He’s also busy reinventing himself and is finding new challenges are coming his way. Most of those he’s not ready to talk about and is only willing to say … “I’ve been asked to do some work for two entities but right now that work
has to remain under wraps …” McKay is no newcomer to personal reinvention. He spent 12 years as an Environment Canterbury councillor, losing that job when commissioners were appointed to run the organisation. At that point his reinvention was a return to the life he knew best, as a Methven farmer. “I put two irrigators on the farm into production, pulled out fences and started re-fencing,” he said. This time round he doesn’t have the option of on-farm projects. His property is leased to a cousin and while he’s been happy over the past few years to lend a hand when needed, he doesn’t see his future back as a hands-on farmer. “At the moment I’m doing the little things I’ve put off for years, sorting and bundling pallets of steel standards, putting wood
in the shed that’s been out there drying for six years, but as for the future? I reinvented myself last time and I’m doing it again.” Options and opportunities are coming out of the woodwork. A phone call here, another there and McKay says he’s far from out on a limb. “How much cash will be involved, I’m not sure, but it’s keeping my mind very active and that’s important.” Looking ahead to next year, McKay says he’s confident his life will be sailing down a new path. “I’ve moved on. I know I don’t want to go back into farming, being tied to the management of a farm – that’s a no.” He’s not looking back and wondering what he could have done differently. There’s no future in that and it’s the future McKay is more concerned with.
“For me this has to be a clean break from the council.” As his life begins to reshape itself away from council, McKay is non-committal about a return to local body politics in the future. “I haven’t even asked myself if I’d ever stand for local government in any shape or form in the future; I haven’t even thought about it.” When ECan’s councillors were replaced by commissioners and McKay went back to the farm he said he had given no thought to standing as mayor. “This time, let’s say, it’s not on my bucket list.” And perhaps surprisingly, his bucket list is not long. It doesn’t include traditional items such as overseas travel or playing more golf. For McKay, the bucket list is mundane – catching up on all the jobs he’s shelved for years.
He’s not looking back with regrets; rather he looks back at his six years leading the district as a time when he gave the best of himself to his community. And there’s a lot of satisfaction in that, he said. “I can always sleep straight in bed knowing I put in all the effort I could. It’s similar to growing crops on the farm, you can put everything into growing that crop and still it can fail. You don’t go into an election to lose it but if you’re realistic, you know it’s a possibility.” The disappointment of not winning a third term as mayor is well behind him and McKay says he’s busy getting his feet on the ground and looking forward to a bright future. “I’ve actually cooked dinner three times in the last fortnight. And yes, I can cook. You should see my sponges.”

Forty per cent victims of break-ins More than 40 per cent of Kiwis have been the victim of a breakin, a report by ADT Security has found. Of the 1013 New Zealand renters and homeowners surveyed by Perceptive Research for the report, 43 per cent said they had their home broken into during their lifetime. When ADT Security compared this data to the results of its 2014 survey, it found the number of reported break-ins had increased by 34 per cent. And according to Statistics New Zealand, nearly 18 per cent more break-ins were reported to police in the year to September 2016 than in the previous year. Ben Clement, a spokesman for ADT Security, said Kiwis’ relaxed attitudes to home security could be contributing to the spike in break-ins. “The warmer weather is a time when many people open up doors and windows to cool down the house. Yet, open doors and windows can also be an open invitation for burglars, so it is important to remain vigi-
lant and try to reduce a home’s appeal to thieves.” Half of the 2016 survey respondents admitted to leaving windows and doors unlocked and nearly a third said they hid a spare key outside their house. In addition to those who reported break-ins, 37 per cent of people surveyed said they had items stolen from outdoor areas on their properties. Clement said Kiwis needed to be vigilant to prevent themselves from becoming victims of burglary. “Security can often be reactionary with many people only considering home security after an incident. Cadets gain national placing The awards and accolades just keep coming for Ashburton’s cadet forces. Last year the group won the cadet forces national competency trophy and now they’ve earned themselves a second placing in the organisation’s national skills competition.
Teams from the northern, central and southern areas competed over 12 activities, with the Ashburton corps winning five of these. Deciding the winner from runner up was down to the wire with the drill event seeing Ashburton pipped by less than a point. The team’s leader Major
Cezarne Rodgers said the skills event was very physical and very challenging mentally for the cadets, but they had performed superbly. Out of the 12 events they won navigation practical, navigation theory, general service knowledge, tug of war and shooting.
Suicide rates among Maori, young people still high There were 508 suicides In 2013 the Ministry of Health has confirmed yesterday, publishing its latest data on the issue. The age-standardised suicide rate was 11 deaths per 100,000 population, down from the peak rate of 15.1, which was in 1998. In 2013, the highest rates of suicide were for males, Maori - especially Maori youth - people aged 15 to 24, and those living in the mostdeprived areas. The total number of suicides reported for 2013 in the ministry’s
annual report on suicide and hospital admissions for intentional self-harm, out yesterday, is unchanged from last November when the ministry released a summary of the 2013 data. The ministry found that the health districts of Lakes, Bay of Plenty, MidCentral and South Canterbury had significantly higher suicide rates than the national rate when the data for 2009 to 2013 was aggregated. The ministry’s tally of suicides is lower than the number counted by
the coroners, whose data is more recent but is based on provisional suicide statistics and contains cases in which intent is yet to be established and may later be found not to be suicide. The coroners’ provisional statistics reported 541 suicides for 2012/13; and 529 for 2013/14. Their latest tally, for 2015/16, is 579. On hospital admissions for intentional self-harm, the ministry found there were 7267 cases in 2013 - a rate of 176.7 per 100,000 population.
The rate rose by 4.6 per cent from 2004 to 2013. The female rate was more than twice the male rate. Among females, the highest rate was for those aged 15 to 19. Waka Hourua, a national Mori and Pasifika suicide prevention programme, said the figures published yesterday show the need for programmes aimed at Maori and Pasifika communities and young people. “They indicate there is a need for targeted suicide prevention
efforts to be continued and expanded. “Waka Hourua is addressing the needs of Mori and Pasifika people by supporting solutions to the problem in the hands of the communities who are impacted by suicide. It is still in its infancy by international standards. “ But the programme is showing some measurable results ... Families are telling us their initiatives are having an impact and are saving lives.” - NZME

NZ could be Trump-era ‘Athens’ A world-famous thinker says New Zealand could be the “Athens of the modern world” in a post-election love letter urging our country to gobble up the globe’s brightest minds amid fallout from the US election and Brexit. Writing for Scientific American alongside other prominent scientists in a piece reacting to Donald Trump’s election win this week, Richard Dawkins wrote our “deeply civilised small nation” should try to lure top scientists from the UK and US eager to escape their countries. The British ethologist and author of the book The God Delusion wrote how “the two largest nations in the English-speaking world have just suffered catastrophes at the hands of voters – in both cases the uneducated, anti-intellectual portion of voters”. Science in both countries would be hit “extremely hard”. “In the one case, by the xenophobically inspired severing of painstakingly built-up relationships with European partners; in the other case by the election of an unqualified, narcissistic, misogynistic sick joke as president. “In neither case is the disaster going to be short-lived: in America because of the non-
Richard Dawkins retirement rule of the Supreme Court; in Britain because Brexit is irreversible.” Dawkins wrote there were top scientists in the US and the UK – “talented, creative people, desperate to escape the redneck bigotry of their home countries”. “Dear New Zealand, you are a deeply civilised small nation, with a low population in a pair of beautiful, spacious islands,” he wrote. “You care about climate change, the future of the planet and other scientifically important issues.” He suggested the New Zealand Government should write to all American and British Nobel Prize
winners, Fields medallists, Kyoto and Crafoord Prize and International Cosmos Prize winners, the Fellows of the Royal Society, the elite scientists in the National Academy of Sciences, the Fellows of the British Academy and similar bodies in America. “Offer them citizenship,” Dawkins wrote. The contribution that creative intellectuals could make to the prosperity and cultural life of a nation was out of all proportion to their numbers, he argued. “You could make New Zealand the Athens of the modern world. “Yes, dear New Zealand, I know it’s an unrealistic, surreal pipe dream.
“But on the day after US election day, in the year of Brexit, the distinction between the surreal and the awfulness of the real seems to merge in a bad trip from which a pipe dream is the only refuge.” The letter comes as major media outlets like Time magazine and The Guardian are reporting a surge in people showing a fresh interest in moving to New Zealand. Within just a 24-hour period, the Immigration New Zealand website received 56,300 visit from the US – up 2500 per cent from its daily average of 2300 visits. Science commentator and Auckland University physicist Professor Shaun Hendy said many people were trying to “look for hope” in the developments that had happened in the UK and US in the last six months. “If you’re a scientist, it’s quite bewildering, really, that large parts of the Western world are backing candidates and voting for things that most scientists say are not based on evidence,” Hendy said. “It really does seem like the use of evidence, the scientific process and the role of experts has been put on the scrap heap to some extent.” - NZME

In brief Arson charge A man has been charged with arson in relation to a fatal house fire in the suburb of Mt Roskill in Auckland on Tuesday. Police said the 25-year-old man was known to fire’s victim and had been charged with one count of using a document as well as the arson charge. He will reappear in Auckland District Court on Monday, November 14. Linda Winifred Edwards, 58, died in the blaze. A post-mortem had been carried out, but investigations were ongoing and further testing was needed to determine how Edwards died, police said. - NZME
Firearms charges Two men with gang affiliations have been arrested on firearms charges after an inquiry into the burglary of guns and ammunition. The men, aged 56 and 57, were arrested after police searched a vehicle and address on the outskirts of Dunedin this week. The searches came after the burglary of a Dunedin address on October 25 where a large number of firearms and ammunition were stolen. Both men have been charged with unlawful possession of a pistol, three charges of unlawful possession of militarystyle firearms, and one charge of receiving stolen firearms. - NZME

Murder accused not guilty A jury has found Dustin La Mont not guilty of murder and wounding a man after he stabbed two men from a neighbour’s noisy party. After five hours of deliberations, the unanimous verdict was that the 26-year-old was not guilty of murdering Whangarei man Nathan Pukeroa and not guilty of wounding Pukeroa’s friend Devaray Junior Cole-Kurvaji in Mt Albert in December last year. When the verdict was read, La Mont stood quietly in the dock as Pukeroa’s friends and family gasped. Cole-Kurvaji got up and slammed the glass barrier of the dock with his hand before leaving the courtroom. Family swore at La Mont and a woman called him a “murderer”. Justice Rebecca thanked the jury for their service and told La Mont he was free to go as his family cried behind him in the dock. During the two week trial, the Crown alleged La Mont grew increasingly frustrated at his neighbours, said to be noisy and gang-related, in the 21 months leading up to the attacks. He made surveillance videos of some of their movements, in-

On the night of Wednesday December 3, the jury heard how during another loud gathering over the fence, La Mont went out to see what was going on armed with a knife and ultimately ended up stabbing the two men then tried to hide his involvement. His lawyers said La Mont acted in self-defence and took immediate action when faced by two men who were much bigger than
him and said he acted in self defence. Cole-Kurvaji said on the evening of the attacks, they were having some drinks and ColeKurvaji did a tattoo – later on he went outside to urinate when he saw a man looking intently at the property. He said it made him suspicious. He and Pukeora went to see what the man was doing when he swung at them with a knife, killing Puekroa and wounding Cole-Kurvaji. The jury also watched La Mont’s police interviews a week after the attacks.

In the first interview, he appeared calm and denied any part in the incident. However, after spending a night with his girlfriend in a motel which had been bugged by police, La Mont confessed the next day to having stabbed the two men. La Mont said he was cornered by two men at the end of his street, after he was seen looking down the driveway at the party next door. He said he continued walking down the street and “hoped they’d leave me alone”, but could see them staring at him. They had then walked towards him, asking what he had been doing on the street, La Mont said. “One, as I tried to walk past grabbed me by the shirt and pulled me back,” he said. He said the men had said something like “should we smash him cuz” and he had warned them that he had a knife in his pocket. They then advanced towards him and one of them swung a punch, La Mont said. After that, all he could remember was the sound of his knife opening, feet thumping on asphalt and a light shining in his eyes when he ran away. - NZME
Two pregnant sisters caught drink-driving Two pregnant sisters will appear in court after being caught drinkdriving – one after driving to collect her sister from the booze bus, police say. A heavily intoxicated teen was stopped by a police booze bus in Hamilton and found to have a breath alcohol level of 303mcg. The limit for drivers under 20 is zero. A child and the teen’s drunken father were also in the car, and police were stunned when the teen’s 23-year-old sister, also pregnant, arrived to pick the family members up. The older sister blew 594mcg – twice the legal limit of 250mcg, Senior Sergeant Gill Meadows said. The pair put not only themselves and other motorists at risk, but also their unborn babies, police said. Police had referred both cases to Child Youth and Family. Meadows called for drivers to use commonsense. “When someone is ringing to have you come and pick them up because they are over the limit the first question is ‘have you been drinking?’ and if they have they shouldn’t be getting behind the wheel.” - NZME

Food out of date? You may not need to chuck it A
bout a third of the food produced in the world is thrown away needlessly every year – that’s 1.3 billion tonnes. The statistics are shocking, but we’re often so scared of getting food poisoning that we would rather throw away perfectly good food than risk it, even if it looks and smells okay. Dailymail.com has revealed exactly what can and can’t be eaten after the best-before dates – and what to watch out for if your food is on the turn.
Alcohol Alcohol takes years to go off, but most hard spirits such as vodka and whiskey won’t make you ill if you drink them after their best before date has expired. Beer is also safe to drink once it’s gone off – but it probably won’t taste very nice. Watch out though: Cream-based liqueurs and anything that’s been in the sun for too long may be dangerous once they’re past their expiry date.
Chocolate Praise be, you can indeed eat that old Mars Bar you’ve found slightly squashed down the side of your sofa. Old chocolate may grow white spots – called ‘bloom’ – where the sugar has crystallised but it’s perfectly safe to eat. It may not taste as good as the day you bought it, but it won’t make you ill.
Potato chips They may not be as crispy as when they were newly bought, but old crisps aren’t going to make you ill. That’s all thanks to the salt that often coats many potato snacks but it’s still best to eat them within three weeks of the expiry date passing.
Eggs A report by food scientist Dana Gunders states that eggs can last for three to five weeks but they have to be kept at a temperature below 5°C to prevent the growth of salmonella enteritidis. One way to check if your eggs are safe to eat is by putting them in a jug of cold water, according to Cosmopolitan magazine. If they sink, they’re fresh; if they don’t, throw them away. If they sit on the bottom but point upwards, they’re on the turn.
Milk Thought all dairy products were risky to eat once their use-by date is up? Not so. Sour milk isn’t going to make you ill and you can actually use it
in a few recipes, such as scones, spice cake and pancakes, to use it up instead of needlessly wasting it. But if you want to keep it fresher for longer, store it in the coldest part of your fridge at the back rather than in the fridge door.
Biscuits Biting into a biscuit only to find it’s gone stale and soft is surely one of life’s most disappointing moments. But the preservatives in these treats mean they’re safe to eat long after the sell-by date has passed – up to two months after, in fact. And there is a way to make them crunchy again. Try popping them
in the oven, and they should be crisp in no time.
Honey and jam You may well have thrown away jars of honey when the bottom has formed a large sugary lump. But the spread is still perfectly safe to eat, despite any crystallisation that has occurred. The same applies to jam – the high levels of sugar preserve these items.
Tinned Food Have you still got that tin of artisan beans from years ago that you’ve never had a reason to use at the back of your cupboard?
As long as it’s been in a cool and dark place, it’ll be fine to use for years and years.
Meat Controversially, you can eat meat if it’s past its expiry date for at least two days – but it is always worth having a smell to see if it’s gone off before using, as off meat can make you incredibly ill. Make sure it’s been stored in a very cold part of your fridge, however.
Packaged salad leaves Packets of salad seem to go off so
quickly, leaving you with wilted and often slimy leaves at the bottom of your fridge. But don’t throw them away too soon – they can be revived with some ice cold water. They’re safe to eat as long as there’s no mould – otherwise they can be dangerous to consume.
Dry pasta It doesn’t matter how long you’ve had those packets of spaghetti and penne in the cupboard, they’ll be fine to use indefinitely. The trick is to make sure you store it in an airtight container if you’ve opened a packet – that way, no moisture can creep in and make it go off. – NZME

Rieko Ioane was a star at the Sevens, and there’s many commentators expecting him to make a huge impact against Italy tomorrow morning.
Ponies keep churning out All Blacks When Rieko Ioane runs onto the Stadio Olimpico pitch some time after 4am tomorrow morning he will become the 45th All Black out of the famous Ponsonby club and the 52nd out of Auckland Grammar School. Both are records for club and school All Blacks. The 19-year-old Ioane follows in the footsteps of 44 other Ponies men, including tomorrow’s starting lock Patrick Tuipulotu, the 44th national rep out of the 142-year-old Auckland club. Ioane also follows in the footsteps of some classy threequarters who made the All Blacks out of Ponsonby. Consider Eric Boggs, Malcolm Dick, Bryan ‘Beegee’ Williams, Va’-
aiga Tuigamala, Craig Innes and Joe and Jeremy Stanley. Ioane’s long-awaited debut almost came in August when he was called into the All Blacks squad to face Australia in Wellington, but he did not make the match-day squad. Now, after playing for the Maori All Blacks in their decisive win over the USA Eagles in Chicago last weekend, Ioane will get his opportunity off the bench, either at centre or on the wing. He looked destined for the top when he left Auckland Grammar at the end of 2014, wowing the crowds, at 17, with the All Blacks Sevens and averaging two tries a match in his limited but telling appearances for Ponsonby.
“He has been earmarked for some time,” says Ponsonby life member and another All Black at 19, ‘Beegee’ Williams. “He had a promising junior career, and captained NZ Schools. It’s great to see him come through. “He’s a talented kid and he’s a good kid. As a club, we’re absolutely rapt for him and his parents.” Such was Ioane’s busy schedule in 2016 that he did not play a match for the Ponsonby premiers, but his link to the club is strong and nigh on unbreakable and he was seen sideline in support at Western Springs Stadium on occasion. His mother Sandra is now the club manager, while father Eddie
– a former Manu Samoa lock – is a constant presence at Ponsonby in support roles. Of course, his brother Akira, another Ponies man, on tour with the Maori, is tipped to make the All Blacks sooner rather than later, as is loose forward Blake Gibson, when he can shrug off his bad luck with injury. When Ioane junior’s full All Blacks status is confirmed, it will see Ponsonby move past Otago University into first place on the overall list. This is the first time that has happened, though there has been some doubt over the status of some players in the past. Ponsonby men such as, for example, Keith Nelson and the late
Lin Colling and Noel Bowden, were not technically All Blacks out of the Ponsonby club. Nelson, a Ponsonby life member, first made the All Blacks out of Otago University, while Colling from Otago’s Pirates club and Bowden from the New Plymouth HSOB club. It needed some assiduous work from Ponsonby club historian Paul Neazor to ensure the numbers were correct as far as can be ascertained. The last of Otago University’s 44 All Blacks was Adam Thomson at Rugby World Cup 2011. Ioane will be All Black No 52 out of Auckland Grammar, extending the national record. Lawson has backed Callum Ferguson to replace Marsh in the second test against South Africa, saying the allrounder’s poor form has been the catalyst for Australia’s four-game losing streak. Batsmen fail to fire A reshuffled Mid Canterbury team fell to an eight wicket loss to Canterbury Country at Rangiora’s MainPower Oval yesterday. Country won the toss and sent Mid Canterbury into bat, which proved a fine decision. Early wickets cost the visitors as Mid Canterbury struggled on a green surface that suited the bowlers and were all out for 92 after tailender Scott Punselie top scored with 34. Country then chased down the total in the 25th over for the loss of only two wickets. Yesterday’s fixture was Mid Canterbury’s third outing as they continue to prepare for their Hawke Cup campaign which begins against South Canterbury on December 4.
In their first warm-up match of the season, Mid Canterbury were lucky to escape with a draw against Nelson last month. Nelson were sent into bat and skittled for 111 in the 47th over with Deon Biggs finishing the home side off, taking his four wickets for 33 runs. However, like yesterday, Mid Canterbury’s batting performance left a lot to be desired. Nelson’s Felix Murray played the role of chief destroyer, taking five for 22, as Mid Canterbury were restricted to 87 all out from 49.2 overs. Ryan Cockburn was the only Mid Canterbury batsman to show resistance with his 30 run contribution. Mid Canterbury continued
to bowl well and it was Hayden Sinclair that spearheaded the attack with four wickets for 17 runs off his 13 overs and had Nelson 150/8 before they declared. Nelson had set Mid Canterbury 178 runs to win but it was not within their reach as they were reduced to 77 for nine with Ryan Cockburn again top-scoring with 19. Mid Canterbury managed to hold on to their last wicket and survive the two days to end the match in a draw. Mid Canterbury then played host to South Canterbury on October 30 and secured the Ron Biggar Memorial Trophy with a 28-run victory. Richard Print, who was absent yesterday, steadied the ship in the second warm-up match with 47
off 57 deliveries after Mid Canterbury were 4-65. Print struck three fours and three sixes before he was stumped by keeper Adam Beck. The innings did not start well for South Canterbury as Print opened the bowling and struck Phil McGregor on the pads to remove him lbw with the first ball of the innings. McGregor was just one of five wickets Print claimed as Mid Canterbury chipped away at their line-up to eventually bowl South Canterbury out for 131 in the 45th over. Mid Canterbury will play their fourth and final pre-Hawke Cup match against North Otago on November 27, before locking horns with South Canterbury a week later.
South African legend Barry Richards has backed Glenn Maxwell to help turn around Australia’s poor recent Test cricket record. Allrounder Maxwell is considered out of the selection picture for the series against the Proteas as Australia endeavour to overcome 1-0 deficit, starting with the second Test in Hobart today. “I know that he’s a bit of a maverick in terms that he plays T20 cricket too often and hasn’t learnt how to play in test cricket. It’s all becoming a bit real I
t is real now. It is really happening. On Tuesday, I received a letter from the Air New Zealand Queenstown International Marathon Event Team with: * My official race number – number 7513. Hopefully the number 13, part of my race number, will bring me luck next Saturday. Crossed fingers. * My timing chip – I didn’t know I would have one of these. I guess my time will be registered online with all the other participants. I can’t lie about my final time then. Haha. * A compulsory ‘invitation’ to athlete check-in at the Queenstown Memorial Centre the day before the race to complete a series of must-dos: - Activate my timing chip. What would my final time be I wonder? I know it won’t be less than 2.45 hours but I hope it will be a lot less than eight hours, which is the maximum time. I am praying I feel good on the day. - Collect my official race tag to be able to use the bag drop system from the start line to the
finish line the letter specifies. I don’t think I’ll have a bag with me, but who knows. - Collect my safety pins. What are these? It must be something like a GPS tracker I guess. I definitely need one of those. I was joking with my colleague and friend Lisa the other day telling her I could see myself going off track and getting lost! Well, at least people will know where I am if I do. This thought reminds me that I really need to go on the Queenstown Marathon website to look at the map of the race. I can’t believe I haven’t done it yet and haven’t read any information about the race as such. I have just been focusing on my training, nothing else. I will definitely study the race over the long weekend.

I ordered myself the black Asics Everyday Run cap a few months ago that I will collect then and probably wear at the race. I am still undecided about wearing a Guardian cap. What do you reckon? me to have a look at it. - Collect my bus sticker to put on my race number as I purchased a shuttle bus ticket from Queenstown (somewhere – I am not sure yet from where exactly) to the start line so Henry and a couple of friends, who are coming down to support me, don’t have to get up early to drop me off and can sleep in if they want to. Plus it will take the stress away of being worried about not finding the start line. Oh my … I am really doing this. This letter makes it all too soon (next week) and too real. My heart is beating like crazy as I am writing this column and thinking about the race. I must admit I have avoided thinking about the big day and only cared about my preparation runs. I must calm down. Breathe Emma, breathe. You will be fine. PS: I can’t believe I feel like I’m about to pass an exam! If you’re in Queenstown that weekend, please come and cheer me on … or pick me up if you find me flat on the ground playing a dead ant.

Rosberg eyes maiden F1 title in Brazil German Nico Rosberg will claim his first Formula One world championship this weekend if he wins his third consecutive Brazilian Grand Prix. While Australian Daniel Ricciardo secured third spot in the championship with his controversial third-place finish in Mexico a fortnight ago, Mercedes teammates Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton remain in a battle for top spot with two races remaining.

Rosberg, who has led the title race since the Italian Grand Prix in early September, holds a 19-point lead over Hamilton and will secure the title at the penultimate race of the season if he outscores his team-mate by six points or more. Along with a win, Rosberg would also claim the title if Hamilton fails to finish and the German comes at least seventh on Monday.
Any spot on the podium would also be good enough for Rosberg if Hamilton fails to finish in the top five. “I love the track. “It’s a great track, feels good and I’ve always gone well here,” Rosberg said. “But at the same time, this year we all start from zero. “Those past wins are not going to help me get the win this weekend.”
Hamilton is yet to win in Brazil, but the track is the site of his most famous championship miracle in 2008, where he overtook Timo Glock for fifth spot in the final race of the year – claiming his first world title by one point. “It is a real challenge to come here and try to win for the first time,” Hamilton said. “That is my goal and I have got nothing really to lose.” - AAP
McGlinchey out The All Whites will be without one of their most experienced players for the next stage of their football World Cup qualifying campaign. Wellington Phoenix midfielder Michael McGlinchey will miss both the home and away world cup qualifying matches against New Caledonia with a knee injury. They play the first match in Albany today. All Whites coach Anthony Hudson says McGlinchey is a huge loss. Scots surprise package In the history of the Four Nations tournament, Scotland is undoubtedly the most unlikely participant. The Bravehearts, who will face the Kiwis in Workington, represent a country that has only amateur league competitions. But Scotland beat both Celtic countries and then had a narrow loss to France which saw them qualify by the narrowest of margins. Playing his own game sive campaign with the Chiefs to earn the All Blacks No 10 jersey. It was the moment he’d long waited for, to be the rightful No 1, to no longer be the understudy, to not be relying on injury to someone else to get his chance. But he had only one full test before he damaged his neck early in the second and, while Cruden was recovering, Beauden Barrett emerged out of his cocoon all beautiful butterfly. The year has belonged to Barrett since that second test in June. Cruden has, once again, found himself as the No 2. He waited six years for his chance, the door opened and in rushed Barrett ahead of him. Lesser men would have fallen apart if forced to accept similar circumstances. Not Cruden. He seems to be at peace with how things Aaron Cruden have gone.
Life has thrown a fair bit of bad luck at Aaron Cruden but he always finds a way to cope. He’s a fighter, a believer – the sort of bloke who can absorb fate’s cruel blows and yet never lose confidence in himself, never doubt what he can do on the rugby field. Given the year he had in 2015, when injury saw him miss most of the season including the World Cup, he had grounds to imagine his fortunes would improve in 2016. In some part they did when he enjoyed an injuryfree and impres-

There will always be a monumental battle for the No 10 jersey and he can’t assume anything. “I know what type of person I am and I always want to be in the starting lineup but the reality is that only 15 guys can do that at one time,” he says. “For me, it’s about making sure I am clear in my role whether that is in the starting lineup or not. “I think in a professional environment you have to be competitive, otherwise you will be found out pretty quickly and you won’t last that long.” It is the art of channelling that competitiveness which has enabled Cruden to become such a valued and valuable member of the All Blacks. He’s never been one to overplay his hand when his chance comes. He’s never been guilty of trying to run through his entire repertoire in the first 10 minutes of a test, just to show what he can do.

His greatest strength is arguably that ability to stay composed and clear-headed and to play for the team and not himself. That’s what he will do in Rome tomorrow morning when he starts his first test since playing Wales in June. In his head it won’t be about emulating or going past Barrett, it will be about playing his game. He won’t get caught up trying to impress, knowing that doesn’t work. He’ll instead be all about the next task, building his game from one play to the next knowing the picture has 80 minutes to form. “Beauden has done really well in patches this year and I don’t know if I would see it as inspiring or frustrating,” says Cruden. “I can’t control what others do. “I can control me and how I respond and how I react if I get an opportunity regardless of who has gone before me. “It is about keeping your emotions in check and being really clear and decisive when you get out there. “Sometimes it is better than others but you just try.” - NZME

Fringe ABs get their shot All Blacks boss Steve Hansen has completely revamped his side for tomorrow’s test against Italy but expects his wares to produce the same high standards. More than three quarters of the side that ran out in last week’s loss to Ireland will sit out the Rome clash, with only lock Patrick Tuipulotu, winger Waisake Naholo and flanker Sam Cane retained. Yet Hansen, who will look to the game as a chance to test out several fringe All Blacks on the big stage, nevertheless said he wants a better performance than that seen in Chicago. “We’ve always had this plan to pick this side for Italy. “This is the team we thought would be right for Italy and nothing that happened in Chicago has changed that,” Hansen said. “Whilst it’s not the same people playing, it’s the same jersey and same expectations, so this group has to go out and get back to the rugby we want to play.” Livewire Rieko Ioane and hooker Liam Coltman are likely to make their test debuts off the bench, while the front row, halfback pairing and midfield duo have all been switched up. The entrants to the squad include last week’s four Maori All Blacks ring-ins, with Ioane, fullback Damian McKenzie, loosie Elliot Dixon and halfback Tawera Kerr-Barlow all in the mix. Kerr-Barlow will line up at No.9 alongside Chiefs team-mate Aaron Cruden, while young guns Anton Lienert-Brown and Malakai Fekitoa make up the midfield. Cane, 24, will captain the side in the absence of incumbent Kieran Read and is joined in the loose forward trio by Dixon and Blues gun Steven Luatua. Hansen said the Chiefs co-captain, leading the side for just the second time, would need to radiate calm amongst a green squad. “The expectation is that he’ll play well, calm and assured under the pressure of the game and making sure the people around him are responding,” Hansen

Mum won’t accept Joe’s apology Ireland’s Kiwi coach Joe Schmidt has admitted that his mother may not have accepted his apology for his role in defeating Steve Hansen’s All Blacks in Chicago. “She thought my apology was false and she was right!” Schmidt joked with the Irish press this week in the lead-up to their test against Canada. “But I was delighted we won the game and I suppose she was as well.” Schmidt used a sideline interview with Sky TV after Ireland’s 40-29 victory to apologise to his Mum who watched the game live back in New Zealand. The 51-year-old former schoolteacher’s daughter Abby has also joked that she is now a converted Irish fan. Circumstances conspire against All Blacks T he perfect storm. That’s what every seaman fears, and that fear should extend to sports coaches as well. You know, when things just gang up and turn bad on you; one thing compounds the other and suddenly you’re in serious trouble. If you’re out on the deep blue sea you’re probably dead; if you’re a coach it probably just feels like it. Just like Steve Hansen would have felt last week, after a series of circumstances led to all sorts of mayhem; but at least him and his charges lived to tell the tale, and get the chance to rectify the result of those circumstances, and in the very near future. The circumstances? For a start, the engine room. It’s not called that for nothing, and I suspect that the All Blacks family (yes that includes you and I sitting watching on the couch) have been lulled into a false sense of security on that score for a couple of years, watching as
our guys eventually out-muscle allcomers and finish over the top of wilting opposition, all the while showing off dextrous ball skills and astonishing tacklebreaking running, while the Flash Harrys out the back get the kudos for scoring breathtaking tries. Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick, with Luke Romano as back-up, are the best in the business, and no matter how the second tier stack up, take away the top three and alarm bells, large ones, should have been ringing. The fixit? Shift Jerome Kaino into lock. Bad. Bad bad call, as positionshifting All Blacks coaches have repeatedly found out to their detriment over the years. Suddenly there’s a massive gap on the blindside; all Kaino’s vast skill-set are negated as he’s dragged into the tight stuff, leaving just enough space for the men in green to exploit. without his normal targets in operation – the All Blacks lose a vital weapon, both on attack and defence. Halfback – You have TJ Perenara, in magical form after being told last year to go away and improve in Super Rugby (you may recall his team won the chocolates with him running the show), but instead you go with Aaron Smith, whose head is, well, somewhere else. If all that’s not enough to blunt the ABs’ attacking game, you mix-and-match the midfield, and then put on two wings who are brilliant but flakey. Julian Savea has got severe Jonah syndrome – a match-winner and a match-loser all in the same
80 minutes – do you have him in your team? You might be kind and say he received a couple of ropey passes, but isn’t the alleged best winger in the world supposed to be able to catch and hang on to such passes? And getting caught and bundled out behind the try-line – there used to be a fella called Christian Cullen to whom the ingoal area was just another place to start a piercing attack. Of course the opposition had a fair bit to do with proceedings, but a little glance at history might have suggested that it was going to be the case all day – just a couple of years ago the All Blacks used their biggest get-out-of-jailfree card ever, and Joe Schmidt has had his team humming, it wasn’t exactly a state secret. If you were astute enough to gather it all together, and see that perfect storm hovering over the ABs’ camp, then the juicy 9-1 odds on Ireland would have looked very inviting, to be sure.
There was a time, not all that long ago in fact, that Greg and Nina Hope were not a lot more than casual observers just taking in the action during Cup Week at Addington. Good trainers, without serious horsepower, the Hope combination might have been lucky to line up one or two horses across the two, or as it was back then, three days of racing. Life’s a little bit different now. And yesterday, on one of the biggest stages of Canterbury’s showpiece week, the Woodend Beach trainers went next level when they produced the quinella of the Group One Dominion Handicap courtesy of champion trotter Monbet and bonny little mare Quite A Moment. “It’s a pretty special moment for the both of us,” Greg Hope said. “To see the colours going at it down the straight in a race like that was something else.” It was reigning Horse of the Year Monbet who emerged on top, completing a dominating 12 months in the trotting ranks in New Zealand that has seen him win every major trotting race the country has to offer. Backed into near unbeatable odds, after his arrogant win in Tuesday’s Trotting Free-For-All, Monbet was given every opportunity by regular pilot Ricky May who had his charge in all the right places at all the right times, before unleashing him at the top of the straight. “We got a few favours out there and to be fair I think we needed them. It’s a bit of a relief, he’s definitely not 100 per cent at the moment but his class pulled him through.” Monbet stopped the clock at a staggering 4.00.7. Quite A Moment’s effort for second in the hands of Gerard O’Reilly, was huge after she galloped away. She tracked Monbet from the 800 and looked momentarily like she was going to give her stablemate a run for his money.

Confidence sky high Glamour jockey Danielle Johnson is confident Nymph Monte is the horse to give her a first win in the New Zealand Cup. Johnson guided the Grant Nicholson-trained five-year-old to a comfortable two and a-half length win in last Saturday’s Listed Metropolitan Trophy (2500m) at Riccarton to ensure favouritism for this weekend’s Gr.3 Christchurch Casino 153rd New Zealand Cup (3200m) at the same track. TAB bookmakers have made Nymph Monte a $2.20 favourite despite drawing out in barrier 17 for the Cup in the wake of his Metropolitan win and Johnson was just as confident. “It was huge, his win,” she said. “He couldn’t have been any more impressive and I’m looking forward to the Cup on Saturday. “If he turns up in the same form, he’s going to take some beating. “From when I first rode him to getting back on him Saturday, you could just feel the difference – and he’s maturing as a racehorse too. “He was so dominant last weekend.” Johnson, who rode three winners on the first day of the carnival, will also shoot for Group One success at Riccarton today when she partners the Shaune Ritchie-

However, the threat of rain is a concern for La Diosa, who is from the family of the 2002 Guineas winner The Jewel. “We’re not sure how she would go on a rain-affected track, I expect a lot of the others are the same,” Brown said. - NZME

The co-operative’s business transformation strategy was resulting in tangible benefits that had exceeded expectations, delivering gains of $56m compared to the budgeted $34m, Taggart said. Alliance, which is New Zealand’s biggest sheepmeat processor, said its debt fell from $129m to $41m and that it carried no seasonal
debt. “Although we’re still in the early stages of a transformation, our strengthened balance sheet and a fitter business means we’re on track to take advantage of global opportunities as we continue to build a stronger, more resilient co-operative, for the benefit of our farmer shareholders,” Taggart said. Chief executive David Surveyor said the weakening of market prices and global volatility over the year reduced group revenues but that the co-operative was able to act as a buffer and absorb some of the impact on its farmer shareholders. - NZME

concerns. Australasian markets, which have been the strongest performers over the year, were the worst performing markets in the three months to 31 October. While stock specific news impacted a number of companies within the markets, the bigger driver appears to have been the increases in interest rates that have occurred during October in response to higher inflation expectations. New Zealand and Australian markets were impacted the most, given the higher yielding nature of these markets. US studies have shown that interest rates rising from low levels have not traditionally been negative for equity market returns. However to the extent fixed interest markets become more attractively priced, this may impact asset allocation decisions towards risk assets, so remains a longer-term consideration. Fixed Interest Markets – Back Central Bank support for longer While domestically the Reserve Bank of New Zealand has again (November 10) cut the Official Cash Rate, longer-term interest rates are being driven by global Central Bank policies. Recently some of the stimulus provided by Japan and Europe has been lower than the market expected and the US Federal Reserve is also closer to raising its official rate.
In the meantime, low absolute interest rate levels have prompted further corporate issuance. More recently this has been largely subordinated debt, but the greater choice and probability of more issuance should allow investors to be more selective and to use new issues to improve the overall quality of their portfolios. This has led to some speculation that longer-term interest rates could be nearing an inflexion point. Market commentators are also again talking about inflation re-emerging and even in New Zealand the December reading for consumer price inflation is expected to rebound toward 1 per cent p.a. As a result, longer-term interest rates increased over the three months to 31 October and markto-market returns were flat for corporate bonds. Looking further out, while longer-term interest rates may have reached an inflexion point, existing government indebtedness does require interest rates to remain low if authorities want to adopt the fiscal stimulus being talked about. This suggests that Central Bank policy should continue to remain accommodative and therefore cap longer-term interest rate increases.

Global environment – low but broadening growth he International Monetary Fund recently updated its global growth outlook, leaving projections unchanged at +3.1 per cent this year following +3.2 per cent last year. Next year’s estimate remains +3.4 per cent. This has led commentators to again focus on the weak economic expansion relative to prior periods. However, this ignores the positive factor that the current expansion is shaping up to be one of the longest in history. Growth in advanced economies of 1.6 per cent this year and 1.8 per cent next year reduces the overall averages. We are however seeing improvements in manufacturing indices, with these indicating an expansion in Japan (the first reading since January 2016), Europe and stronger expansions in the UK and US economies. Importantly for Australasia, Asian economies continue to grow at robust levels; 6.5 per cent this year and 6.3 per cent forecast for 2017. Globally, growth is still being supported by accommodative monetary policies and with further support now more reliant on fiscal stimulus this may see more volatility in sentiment, but we maintain that a lower growth for longer environment is not a bad outcome.

Invercargill-based Alliance Group said its pre-tax profit rose by 26.7 per cent to $10.1 million in the year to September, despite difficult market conditions. Chairman Murray Taggart said the year had been challenging for farmers, but that the co-operative had strengthened its balance sheet considerably. “Global market prices have been at their most difficult in the last five years and any recovery in prices since May has been more than offset by the foreign exchange levels, in particular, sterling and US dollar,” he said.

Clinton has shown the way James Ford

here’s been social unrest across the United States since Wednesday’s election result. My editorial in yesterday’s edition of the Guardian questioned the way in which some have reacted towards those that voted for Donald Trump, before taking note of their reasoning. This election has been abhorrent at times. From FBI investigations to accusations of sexual assault. The way in which both candidates presented themselves to the world couldn’t have been more polarising, from their demeanour, attitude and more obviously, appearance. And from this we can take a very important positive from what has been the most aggressive and dividing race to the Oval Office. At one end of the stage you had a man in a suit. Granted, Donald Trump’s appearance is slightly different to what we’re used to. The tangerine skin and gravity defying hair does set him apart from his predecessors. But, what many young women will have seen would have been just that – a man in a suit. Like every other presidential candidate before. While on the other side of the stage was Hillary Clinton, a 69-yearold woman making history, again. When it became apparent that her second charge to the White House had progressed further than her last, but still fell short, her concession speech may have been the most dignified moment of both campaigns. Rather than continuing to question Trump’s credentials, she insisted Americans must give Trump an open mind and a chance to lead. She then moved on to the obvious, another attempt and ultimately failure, to become the first female president of the world’s only super power. “I know we have still not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling. But someday, someone will, and hopefully sooner than we might think right now,” she said with glassy eyes. But in an election in which both candidates’ reputations have been left in tatters, Clinton can take solace from what she has achieved. Granted, she won’t be president, but as the first woman nominated by a major party for the presidency and having served as Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013, she has certainly shown the way. If any good can be taken from how this presidential race was fought, it can be that young women will not feel as though they can’t go one step further.

hat wealthy feline frightener, multi-millionaire and self-promoted controversialist, Gareth Morgan (GM), has announced he is in the process of founding a new political party up to which, at the last count, one thousand fresh-faced members have already signed. Thus the basic five hundred needed to qualify as a party has been safely negotiated. Morgan wishes, he says, “to light a fuse” under what he feels are the inertia-ized (my word, but one which gives you an idea of from where Morgan is coming) parties of our country, namely National and Labour. To those two dinosaurian groups, and, at the other extreme, our pygmy parliamentary tailwaggers - from whom, periodically, so much is expected , will be added, The Opportunities Party (TOP). My first reaction to this grand initiative is to wonder, “what about the bomb” that is invariably attached to the fuse and without which the exploding fuse will barely disturb a slumbering member on a parliamentary back bench in the Beehive or elsewhere. We are all familiar with the phrase, “I’d like to put a bomb under him” but, only a fuse? That surely won’t lead to political upheaval and unrest amongst the masses. Even Guy Fawkes had all the right gear with him when he was apprehended before he could use it as intended, to deliver his

coup de grace and blow up the Houses of Parliament lock, stock and barrel. As one might expect, the new political leader is forming his own brand of leadership which apparently rules out any suggestion of TOP going into coalition with anyone else, tail-waggers or not. What’s more, the opportunists will sit in a little huddle on the cross-benches showing their disdain for attaching themselves to any other group. Of course, it may be a very small huddle indeed as only list seats are on the opportunists’ menu and it’s hard to see why they should get past the five per cent qualifying mark, a seemingly small total maybe, but one which has defeated most of our would-be mavericks since MMP made its contentious debut in 1996. And, in a quirky finale to his slightly longer-term goals, Morgan has declared that having given his list men the opportunity to discuss specific topics on the floor of the House and, presumably, found solutions to most of the single issues raised with a good dose of Morgan Common Sense, the opportunists will, after
next year’s election, simply fade away to become merely a page in the history of the Kiwi political experience. Morgan may be onto a winner but it’s hard to see quite how. It might be more realistic if GM were to come clean on his party. TOP is clearly a means to keep the other b..... ds honest” and only the latest in a long line of such groups. Elsewhere, the scrap over housing between National and Labour continues along its predictable path, with each side throwing more and more money at the problem in the vain hope that somehow more houses at affordable prices will magically materialise by this time next year, for which either the busy Bennett or the earnest, if more expansive, Phil Twyford will be able to claim a stirring victory. The idea of resource pooling and a combined initiative is still, apparently, in the realms of political fairyland. And now the US election has come and gone and, in the process, thrown up the most unlikely winner since America became an independent nation. Having broken every rule in the candidate’s manual, committed gaffes of gargantuan proportions, revealed an astonishingly cavalier approach to women, just at a time when respect for women has become a global catch-cry for politicians of all persuasions even the NZRFU has been obliged to acknowledge such strange people really do exist (and that
actually includes Tew himself), and finally, insulted and bullied his female opponent, Donald Trump now has the key to the White House. It is almost a speechless-making moment. Presumably, we can, nevertheless, soon expect to see the hurriedly-established panel hard at work investigating with all due diligence, Trump’s oft-repeated allegation he was facing an already rigged election procedure. Could it now be that for him to win it, Trump might just be prepared to acknowledge it wasn’t? Spice Girls recording The Spice Girls are back in the recording studio. Geri Horner and Emma Bunton – who make up two of the original five members of the girl group alongside Mel B, Mel C and Victoria Beckham – have taken to Instagram to share an image of the two of them in a studio ahead of the 21st anniversary of their debut single Wannabe. The photo, posted to Geri’s Instagram account, was simply captioned: “In studio,oooooh @ emmaleebunton (sic)”. But any new music to come out of the studio sessions won’t be branded as Spice Girls music, as Mel C and Victoria are refusing to take part in the reunion. Trump visits new home President-elect Donald Trump took a triumphant tour of the nation’s capital yesterday, holding a cordial White House meeting with President Barack Obama, sketching out priorities with Republican congressional leaders and taking in the majestic view from where he’ll be sworn in to office. Trump’s meeting with Obama spanned 90 minutes, longer than originally scheduled. Obama said he was “encouraged” by Trump’s willingness to work with his team during the transition of power, and the Republican called the president a “very good man”. “I very much look forward to
dealing with the president in the future, including his counsel,” Trump said from the Oval Office. He’ll begin occupying the office on January 20. While Trump noted that he and Obama had never met before, their political histories will forever be linked. Trump spent years perpetrating the lie that Obama was born outside the United States. The president campaigned aggressively against Trump during the 2016 campaign, warning that his election would put the republic at risk. But at least publicly, the two men appeared to put aside their animosity. As the meet-
ing concluded and journalists scrambled out of the Oval Office, Obama smiled at his successor and explained the unfolding scene. “We now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed because if you succeed the country succeeds,” Obama said. Trump was also beginning the process of putting together his White House team. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who worked his way into Trump’s inner circle during the election, and top campaign official Kellyanne Conway were emerging as possible picks for White
House chief of staff, according to two people familiar with the transition planning. A third person said conservative media executive Steve Bannon was also in the mix, though others insisted Bannon would not have a White House role. First lady Michelle Obama met privately in the White House residence with Trump’s wife, Melania, while Vice President Joe Biden saw Vice President-elect Mike Pence. Trump’s team was said to be sketching a robust role for Pence, an experienced Washington hand, that would include both domestic and foreign policy responsibilities. - AP

Singer songwriter Leonard Cohen dies Leonard Cohen, the Canadian poet and novelist who became a singular international presence as a singer-songwriter, has died. He was 82. “It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away,” a statement on his official Facebook page said. “We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries.” A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date, said the statement, which requested privacy for his family “during their time of grief”. Only last month, Cohen released his final album, You Want It Darker, a deeply introspective work that focused
Leonard Cohen thematically on mortality. His elegantly penned songs, authored during a musical career that spanned six decades, won him comparison with such other songwriters of his
era as Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. His best-known song, Hallelujah, has been recorded more than 200 times. Cohen never recorded a chart single and didn’t place an album in the top 10 until he was in his 70s, but his ardent fans and musical peers viewed him as a musical craftsman with few equals. As a songwriter, his themes encompassed love in all its manifestations, religion, faith and the tenuous state of the world. Like Hallelujah, many of his tunes – his breakthrough composition Suzanne, Bird on the Wire, Tower of Song – became much-covered keystones of the popular songbook.
His longtime accompanist Jennifer Warnes recorded several of his best-known works on her 1987 Cohen recital Famous Blue Raincoat. He was a well-known womaniser whose many romantic partners included fellow Canadian musician Joni Mitchell and actress Rebecca De Mornay. Yet he would famously reject the world of the flesh: Torn by depression and doubt about his life and career, he withdrew to spend more than five years in a Buddhist monastery; he later studied at a Hindu ashram in Mumbai. Hunter’s house for sale Rachel Hunter is putting her West Hollywood home up for sale for the third time. According to Variety, the Make Me A Supermodel star bought the house in April 2004 for $3.37 million and in August she listed it for $6.5m. Now the 47-year-old supermodel is renting it out for $26,000 a month. Rachel had previously listed the house in 2006 for $4.7m but took it off the market the following year. She had tried to stoke up more interest by dropping the price to $3.9m, and in February 2008 she listed the property once again but for $4.2m.

Bomber hits German consulate Germany’s consulate in northern Afghanistan was attacked yesterday when a suicide car bomber rammed the compound, a senior police official said. The car exploded at the gate of the consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif city, destroying the gate and wall around 11.10pm local time, said Abdul Raziq Qaderi, head of security for Balkh province. He said three police were wounded. “Police have surrounded the area and our forces are inside the compound,” he said. The Taliban issued a statement saying they had sent suicide attackers to the consulate. Sher Jan Durrani, spokesman for the police chief of Balkh province, said a gun battle was going
on at the consulate. The German Foreign Ministry said in a statement there was an “armed attack” on the consulate but didn’t specify the nature of the attack or mention any casualties. The statement said there had been fighting outside and on the grounds of the consulate and that Afghan security forces and troops from the international Resolute Support mission were at the scene. Mazar-i-Sharif is the capital of Balkh province and one of the most important cities in the country. Residents in the city reported hearing a huge explosion near the consulate that shattered windows in buildings nearby. - AP

Amnesty International reported allegations against security forces of arbitrary detention, forced disappearances and ill-treatment of prisoners, including an account that up to six people were “extrajudicially executed” in late October over suspected ties to Isis. “Without effective measures to suppress and punish serious violations, there is a real risk that we could see war crimes of this kind repeated in other Iraqi villages and towns during the Mosul offensive,” Maalouf added. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi denied the report, calling it “incorrect information,” and saying in a statement that Isis fighters were the ones responsible for the killing of civilians. - AP
President-elect Donald Trump is back on Twitter, taking on the protesters who have gathered in cities across the nation since his election. Trump tweets: “Just had a very open and successful presidential election. Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!” Thousands have been gathering in cities from New York to Dallas to San Francisco to voice opposition to Trump’s election. Trump’s complaint yesterday about the media echoes the rhetoric of his campaign, when he railed against the press as “disgusting” and “dishonest”. A few minutes earlier, Trump was more positive about his trip to Washington, tweeting: “A fantastic day in DC. Met with President Obama for first time. Really good meeting, great chemistry. Photographer We are seeking a creative and motivated photographer. This is a contractor position, working some evenings and weekends. The position is to cover local events and news stories providing photographs for a range of Ashburton Guardian publications. Experience in photographing people on location is necessary. A passion for the local community, including sports, will be helpful.
