Sounds of machinegun fire and blasts reverberated throughout Ashburton’s town centre yesterday as more than 600 people gathered to commemorate Armistice Day. The dramatic noises continued for about 15 minutes and then ceased at 11am, marking the moment, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, that World War One was declared over. It was an occasion to not only celebrate, but to remember the sacrifice of the men and women who served during the Great War. The crowd, gathered at the north side

of the Baring Square cenotaph, were silent as the town clock chimed 11 times, the Ashburton fire siren sounded and traffic from nearby West Street rumbled in the background. On the south side of the cenotaph rows of white crosses decorated the lawn, a sad testimony to the Ashburton men killed during the conflict. Ashburton cadet unit sentinels were around the cenotaph and square, the Ashburton Pipe Band played and Ashburton RSA members and war veterans were in attendance. Moving addresses were delivered by mayor Donna Favel and Ashburton RSA president Merv Brenton, who together

lay an armistice wreath. Favel said the day was an opportunity to look back on the past four years as the district had moved its way through WW100 events. It was a time to contemplate the meaning of peace, and a time to remember those whose sacrifices were signified on war memorials. “That generation is no longer with us, but their memory will endure with us through their children, their children’s children and the generations that follow,” she said.
