Farmers told to test for P BY MICHELLE NELSON
MICHELLE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mid Canterbury employers in rural businesses would be well advised to drug test workers, Ashburton’s top cop says. Cantabrians were recently identified as the second highest consumer of methamphetamine in the country and there was no
reason to think Mid Canterbury had bucked the trend, which has been attributed to the influx of workers into post-quake Christchurch. “It is a real risk to rural industries in this area,” Banfield said. “A lot of these businesses employ casual workers at certain times of the season without real-
ly knowing anything about them. “They are putting very expensive machinery in the hands of drug-affected people – some of those machines are worth half a million dollars, would you let them drive a car worth that much?” Even those employed short term had an opportunity to
scope out the business and thefts were commonplace when methamphetamine was involved. “Farmers often find the chainsaws or quad bikes have gone and the worker no longer answers the cellphone,” he said. “Farmers are still too trusting – they need to write it into contracts and drug test casual
employees and anyone they are unsure of. “Trust your instincts – if you think something is wrong it probably is.”
