College puts up good fight P24

Parents are outraged over a Canterbury police decision to axe Acads-led after-ball parties for Mid Canterbury’s two secondary schools. A letter outlining the decision, based on a recent court ruling, was sent to the parents and caregivers of senior students earlier this week – just two weeks out from the Mt Hutt College ball. It found consumption of alcohol at an event involving an entry charge to be illegal, irrespective of the age of participant, and those responsible face fines of up to $20,000. It is also illegal to hold BYO events on licensed premises. For the past 17 years the community drug and alcohol service Acads has run the after-ball parties for both schools

without a hitch and parents and students alike are stunned by this week’s cancellation. Acads manager Chris Clark said the service had no option but to cancel the after-ball events. Megan Henderson, whose 17-yearold son attends Mt Hutt College, said parents were very concerned about the possibility of students making their own plans spurring a return to the “bad old days” of out-of-control, unsupervised after-ball parties in a community with just one police officer. She would like Senior Sergeant Gordon Spite, who signed the letter as head of the Christchurch Alcohol Harm Reduction Unit, to explain the ruling to a Methven community delegation. “The after-ball party is a rite of passage and we are 101 per cent behind these kids,” Mrs Henderson said.

“Sometimes laws are wrong, and they need to be changed. “It’s commonsense to have all the kids in one place, in a well supervised environment with limits on how much alcohol they can bring in (six standard drinks). “I was happy to send my child to an event where I knew he would be safe.” A Facebook page Bring Back After Balls was created soon after the news of the cancellations broke. Postings reflect Mrs Henderson’s thoughts on the matter. Ashburton Police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said there were no plans to ramp up police numbers to deal with the possibility of private after-ball parties. “If such an event did occur then the public order team would respond from Christchurch,” he said.
