Fallout from toilet stop continues BY LINDA CLARKE
LINDA.C@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A national bus company has axed its relationship with a travel operator after a bus driver was told to pull over in Tinwald and passengers exited to urinate in public. Pacific Tourways provided the coach and driver but South Island general manager Doug Kirk said yesterday the company would no longer be supplying coach services to tour company Mercury Travel. Kirk apologised and said the bus driver had been instructed to stop by the tour leader, even though there was a toilet onboard. Men and women decamped from the
bus on busy State Highway One, opposite the Tinwald Medical Centre and a café, and urinated on the grass verge and behind bushes. The incident, which was shared widely on social media, has disgusted Ashburton people as public toilets were not far away. Kirk said the incident on Friday had been distressing for Pacific Tourways, as its coach and driver was under the control of Mercury Travel and its tour leader. “This was really frustrating for us as this coach was a five-star featured coach with own toilet.” He said the tour leader had been advised that the coach would be stopping in Ashburton for a toilet stop.

“I do apologise for what has happened, we also find this behaviour disgusting and do not condone it at all. We go to great lengths to provide a service which allows for groups to have regular stops and in this case their own bathroom facility.” Kirk said Pacific Tourways made a formal complaint to police regarding the incident. He understood a formal written warning had been issued to the tour leader and group.
