Donations divide schools Mid Canterbury schools have been divided into winners and losers by the Budget 2019 initiative to take pressure off parents for school donations.

A central part of government’s child wellbeing approach was an extra $265.6 million over four years for decile one to seven state

and state-integrated schools, which opt in and abolish school donations.

Consequently, hundreds of thousands of dollars are set to roll in to 12 of Mid Canterbury’s 21 schools, which will qualify for the $150-per-student-per-year initiative.

Parents will be off the hook and no longer asked for an annual donation, or fees to cover curriculum activities such as camp fees and performance fees.

But the other nine schools in the district, in the decile eight to 10 range, do not qualify and will continue to ask parents to cover

these costs.

The 10 per cent of schools with the highest proportion of students from low socio-economic communities are decile one, while the 10 per cent of schools with the lowest proportion of students from these communities are decile 10.

Mid Canterbury schools range from Netherby at decile three up to Carew Peel Forest at 10.

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose, whose school is decile four, said currently only about 50 per cent of the school’s parents paid the annual school donation of $40 per child and $60 per family.

“People have that idea in their head that education should be free,” Melrose said.

Based on the school’s 350 students, getting $150 per year for each would amount to about $52,000. Draft calculations suggested this would cover the costs it currently asked parents for, and there would even be some money left over.

“So we may be able to increase teacher aide time,” Melrose said.

The board of trustees had yet to make a decision, but he welcomed the initiative and believed it was a positive move on behalf of the government.

Netherby School principal Phil Wheeler said his school was also yet to make up its mind, but it was looking likely it would take the funding and scrap school donations.

Fairton School principal Mike Hill applauded the initiative, especially for smaller schools, and said Fairton would definitely be opting in.

Ashburton Christian School principal Tim Kuipers said the decile six school was almost certainly going to be opting in, and the approximate $18,000 per year would most likely go towards improving classroom programmes.

“It’s basically a real great boost to our grant for each year,” Kuipers said.

Principal Chris Murphy at Methven Primary School also welcomed the initiative, but believed it should have been extended to all schools. Methven Primary, like its neighbouring Mount Hutt College, is decile nine.

“It would be fair to say I’m disappointed it hasn’t included all schools,” Murphy said.

“Decile ratings are not a true indication of the wealth within our community, because we have, just

like any community, folk at both ends of the spectrum. And $150 per child extra would make a huge difference to what we can offer at the school.”

The Methven Primary School donation was $50 per child and a maximum of $100 per family, and over the last five years there had been an average of up to 60 per cent of parents paying this.

Other extras were added throughout the year with the utmost discretion and everything asked for would fall within the $150 per child amount being pro-

posed by government.

Other schools in the decile eight to 10 range in Mid Canterbury are Dorie, Lauriston, Longbeach and Mt Somers Springburn at decile nine, and St Joseph’s and Wakanui at decile eight.

Mid Canterbury’s largest school of Ashburton College is a decile six, with 1200 students, requesting a donation of $100 per pupil or $150 for two or more from one family. Slightly less than half of parents pay this each year.

Principal Ross Preece said the school would have to register with

the Budget initiative by November if it wanted to participate, and at this stage it was inclined towards it.

“We like the idea in principle because we are aware that it (school donation) does put pressure on families. We are certainly considering it, we are just crunching the numbers at the moment.”

Other schools in the up to decile seven range in Mid Canterbury are Ashburton Intermediate, Tinwald, Rakaia and Chertsey, at six, and Allenton, Borough, Chertsey and Mayfield at seven.

Jail for firearms offences, HD breaches Police found a loaded gun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition at the Tinwald home of a 28-year-old man serving a sentence of home detention, the Ashburton District Court was told yesterday.

They also found the electronic monitoring device that Nicholas Joseph Chapman, 28, had cut off his ankle.

Chapman was jailed for 12 months yesterday, having admitted two charges of breaching the home detention sentence, two charges of breaching community work, four charges relating to the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition and three charges of theft.

Judge Joanna Maze said there was no chance of Chapman converting the jail time to another term of home detention.

She also imposed jail release conditions that Chapman must abstain from alcohol and drugs, and take counselling as directed.

The offences occurred last October and in February, after Chapman was sentenced to nine months’ home detention in the Timaru District Court in June 2018.

In February, police were called to his Tinwald home in the early hours of February 21 to investigate a tamper alert of the electronic monitor. Chapman was not there and officers were told

he had gone to the hospital due to a knee injury. This was false.

Returning to the house the next day, they saw a set of pocket scales on a bedside table in his bedroom and a home-made bong in another room.

Police searched the house for drugs and found a sawn-off shotgun.

They then searched for firearms and in containers in Chapman’s bedroom they also found: 173 rounds of .22 calibre ammunition Three rounds of .223 ammunition, commonly used in military style semi-automatic weapons One round of .308 ammunition

14 rounds of .338 ammunition, commonly associated with high-powered sniper rifles and capable of penetrating body armour Seven rounds of .300 ammunition 46 rounds of 6.5mm x 55mm ammunition 13 rounds of 7mm Remington ammunition and 36 shotgun shells.

Officers also found two rifle bolts.

Also located in the house was a machete, a baseball bat, a long-handled hammer and a saw.

They also found the cut-off electronic monitor strap.

Chapman did not have a firearms licence.

Chapman’s lawyer Gretchen Hart said he told probation staff that he had used methamphetamine, a breach of his home detention, because he needed more support. He had cut off the electronic sentence monitor because he feared for his safety and needed to hide.

Judge Maze said the loaded sawn-off .22 rifle found in October had not been secured. Neither was a shotgun also found at the house.

She said the fact Chapman had firearms and ammunition in the house presented a high risk for those officers charged with administering the home detention sentence.

Mani said he had contacted people in the social development and health sectors and had written to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern with ideas around how the

The need for housing for specific groups of people would only grow in the future, Mani said, and when a large complex such as

Cameron Courts was put to another use, the opportunity would be lost.

The Ashburton Housing and Support Trust is progressively buying the nine stand-alone independent living units that were part of the Cameron Courts complex and had not considered buying the larger rest-home complex, said its chair Jackie Girvan.

The trust did not have the funds to buy Cameron Courts and the style of accommodation offered did not tie in with its focus on building stand-alone units, she said.

With the option of leasing possibly on the table, however, Girvan said it could be an idea her board wanted to explore.

The idea of putting the building to use as some kind of community accommodation definitely had merit, she said.

She suggested it could become a facility where people 60 plus lived in a semi flatting situation similar to the Abbeyfields concept used in other parts of New Zealand.

“It’s definitely an opportunity for someone, but not for our trust.

It’s a matter of someone seeing that opportunity and having the fortitude to follow it through.”

The body of a Lower Hutt man missing since last Thursday has been found. Police said they found Warren Nelson’s body in an area of bush in Naenae yesterday.

The 71-year-old was last seen on Rata St in Naenae, Lower Hutt on Thursday, June 6. There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death which have been referred to the Coroner, a police statement said. Elsewhere, police have confirmed a body was found during the search for the missing Danish tramper in South Westland. The body has not been formally identified, but police believe it to be the 21-year-old who was missing in Karangarua Valley.

Mount Hutt hits the high notes

Mount Hutt College is making a name for itself on the music scene, after returning from premier events with a host of awards.

On Monday night saxophone trio The Caviar Vanguard was highly commended at the NZCT Chamber Music Contest at Timaru, and won best performance of a New Zealand work for their rendition of Tongue in Cheek

They also won the coveted KBB Music Award for the best performance by a brass/ woodwind/percussion group.

Returning with a swing in their step were members Simon Harford in Year 13, Charlotte Blundell in Year 12 and Chloe Keijzer in Year 11.

“It was honestly a bit of a surprise, but I think with how much work we put into this piece, it paid off,” Simon said.

And their music teacher Matthew Wood was singing their praises yesterday, while also applauding members of the other four groups entered by the college.

“I’m pleased for all the groups. A lot of the other groups were quite young, so for them it was really about gaining experience in front of an audience and being able to get feedback in front of a professional judge,” Wood said.

He believed The Caviar Vanguard members had benefited from some fine-tuning of their performance when Royal New Zealand Air Force Band members visited the school recently.

“It helped them bring the piece together and present it in a very cohesive manner.”

The contest success followed the school receiving accolades at the premier choral festival for secondary schools in the country on Friday night, the Big Sing.

Twenty-seven choirs from 15 schools throughout Canterbury and the West Coast entertained crowds at the Christchurch Town Hall.

MHC Chorus was making its debut, and took out the award for outstanding performance by a new choir.

Their three numbers were A Quiet Sanctus, One Fine Day and The Voices of Children.

Wood said it had been an awesome and inspiring event for the choir’s 19 members, and they had particularly enjoyed being part of the massed choir performance of Aroha: Otautahi, Wairua o te puna, sang in recognition of what Christchurch has been through with the March terror attack, and also to welcome everyone back to the town hall.

It was the first time the Big Sing had been held in the town hall since the earthquakes.

“It was a really moving performance,” Wood said.

Did 5.5 jolt really strike Alpine Fault?

NZME Scientists are questioning whether a magnitude 5.5 weekend quake did indeed strike on New Zealand’s most dangerous mainland fault.

If the event – recorded near Big Bay in the far north of Fiordland at 3.24am on Sunday – did actually rupture on the Alpine Fault, it would have been the most significant shake observed on the South Island’s high-risk, 600km-long quake-maker in nearly two decades.

Only, seismologists still weren’t so sure. “The reason we are putting a bit of ambiguity around whether the earthquake happened on the Alpine Fault is just because of the quality of our earthquake location data in that part of the country is not particularly good,” GNS Science duty seismologist Sam Taylor-Offord explained.

“So, when we are looking at the map of Big Bay and the epicentre of the main shock in that earthquake, the amount of error in that location could mean the earthquake was anywhere between the Alpine Fault trace … or 5km to 10km inland towards Southland.”

Reported by more than 600 people around Queenstown and Wanaka, the quake was part of a swarm of tremors recorded around Milford Sound that morning.

The Alpine Fault poses one of the biggest natural threats to New Zealand.

What made the picture so complicated was that the region was notoriously seismologically and tectonically active – and the quake could have happened on faults nearby.

“So, while the epicentre is sitting conspicuously close to the Alpine Fault trace, when we think about

that uncertainty and the location, we have to kind of back step a little bit and say, well, that could be on the Alpine Fault, but with the data that we have, we can’t actually confirm that.”

It was something that might never had been able to be confirmed had a GNS team not co-inciden-

tally deployed a temporary seismic network in the area.

“When they go out and get the data from that, they should be able to actually locate the earthquake very quickly and very reliably, and tell us with certainty whether it occurred on the Alpine Fault.”

In any case, scientists were expecting further aftershocks over coming days, and then a return to background levels of seismicity.

“We’re not expecting this to be a precursor to a large earthquake – although that’s not to say that one couldn’t happen.”

Taylor-Offord also expected that some stress transfer had resulted from the quake – and some of it had likely been loaded on to the Alpine Fault.

“We would expect to see a reduction in stress around where the actual rupture has actually happened in this earthquake,” he said.

“Because there has been movement on that part of a fault, it will actually shift some of that stress on to adjacent areas.

“So I would expect there has been some increased stress on the Alpine Fault, but because it’s been a relatively small earthquake, it wouldn’t be a very large increase – an infinitesimal increase, I would say.”

Burning boat poses a conundrum for authorities NZME Who would have thought ... a mystery involving a cemetery?

Emergency services were called to Hillsborough Cemetery in Auckland yesterday after plumes of black smoke could be seen pouring into the sky.

The source of the smoke was a small fibreglass boat sitting on its trailer which was engulfed in flames.

A charcoaly wreck is all that remains but what was the boat doing there and why was it on fire? No one seems to know.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand were quickly on the scene and extinguished the burning wreck but left the investigation in the hands of the police.

Auckland Council, which manages the cemetery, said they were aware of the fire and also that police were investigating.

However, a police spokeswoman told the Herald officers attended the blaze but Fenz is the lead emergency services agency in charge.

The officers were off-duty when the Herald tried to contact the police for more information.

Firefighters were quickly on the scene of the burning wreck but by the time it was extinguished much of the boat’s structure had melted away.

Debris is splattered around the wreck which has been blocked off by yellow caution tape to prevent people from approaching.

land. Over the last 12 million years, the Alpine Fault had driven an incredible 20km of uplift, making the Southern Alps its most recognisable marker.

This rapid, dramatic process has also hauled up faulted rock from deep below the surface, giving scientists critical insights into the constant geological scrum taking place under New Zealand.

The fault had a clear geographic record of rupturing around every three centuries – and scientists recently marked the 300th anniversary since an 8.1 quake that shunted the fault’s southern side eight metres further south in a matter of seconds.

Until now, scientists knew of four large quakes along the Alpine Fault over 1000 years; today, they could point to 27 over 8000 years.

Further, they’ve also learned that the southern section of the fault has ruptured repeatedly with similar characteristics in size and in time intervals between events.

These intervals have ranged between 100 and 500 years – a trend that’s enabled scientists to roughly work out the probability of a quake over any given future time period.

Tackling mycoplasma bovis head-on I

t’s an issue that has been a part of life around this district for so many, but by no means does mycoplasma bovis define dairying in the Ashburton District.

Ever since news broke of the disease, Ashburton has been at the forefront of discussion around the process of trying to eradicate, manage and ultimately remove it from our midst and while significant moves have been made in the right direction, there’s still a lot of water to go under the bridge.

It’s been a tough time, really tough for some and the mental impact is the often unseen trouble that everyone has been quietly working to try and aid in the background.

What is great to see is the way the community as a whole has rallied around our troubled rural friends – it’s taken a while, but there have been some really encouraging signs unfolding in recent weeks.

We’ve largely come through a really critical time in Moving Day relatively unscathed, which is great, but the level of support and knowledge being passed on needs to continue.

And that’s where the newly formed Ashburton Mycoplasma Bovis Advisory Group is a real positive.

As we head into the winter months, some of the tougher periods of the farming year, that level of support and communication is vital to the continued progress of getting this disease eradicated from the district.

Those of us who don’t hail from a dairy-based background probably can’t fully understand just what the disease is doing to farms and farmers around the district, but it seems that everyone is understanding of the troubles that are being faced.

Next month, a day will be held to give those impacted by the disease a chance to get off the farm

and enjoy a day away from it all, even if it is just for a few hours.

The day, held at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s July meeting, is being touted as the Farming Families Day at the Races, with invites being issued to every farming family from within the district and further afield.

Last year, when the event was first held, more than 300 people came flocking through the gates for a completely free day out and this year the hope is that even more will attend.

The day is supported by a number of local and national farming businesses as well as the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust who are investing a lot of time and resources in getting the event off the ground.

But there is also a number of other groups from around the district who deserve a mention, through their donations of gifts and prizes that will be handed out during the day.

This district is incredible for getting stuck in and helping out their fellow Mid Cantabrians, and it’s quite remarkable that time and time again people and businesses selflessly come to the party to do their bit in times of need.

Our rural community is such a strong part of who we are, they’re not the entire district, but they are a substantial part of it and it’s good to know that when needed, we can come together as one and do what we can to help each other out.

No economic growth without people T

he Ashburton District is one of the best for quality of life and opportunities.

In fact, we know from the recently commissioned New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) report that our district is the sixth most desired for business and twelfth for quality of life of 66 districts across the country.

One of the key findings from the report was that the Ashburton District has a labour shortage: we have jobs, but not enough people with the right skills to fill those positions.

The consequence of this predicament is estimated to have cost our local economy $16 million in lost output in 2018 alone.

This is forecast to increase to $105 million by 2030 – reflecting a shortage of 589 employees, if we stay on the same trajectory.

With this in mind, the council is making sure that we are doing what we can to increase those opportunities and support the continued growth of our flourishing community.

access to services, safety and a strong sense of identity and belonging – somewhere where they can support their families and see a future for themselves.

If we can continue to make these elements a core attribute of our district (which benefits all of our citizens), then the economic opportunities for our community could be near endless, and that cost of lost output would be diminished.

I am not ashamed in admitting my passion for getting to the heart of people and being a leader with a focus on the human experience and potential.

Communities are very little without the people in them to make them exist, and it is with this vision and empathy that I approach many of my duties.

A consequence of this, is that

some may consider that I don’t emphasise the strictly business and economic growth of our district, or that it comes secondary to my appeals for the human experience. This is not so.

Max Frisch is attributed as saying, “we asked for workers, we got people instead”.

To me, these profound words offer a link between the numbers game of business, and the stories and lived experience of being a person.

What is the point of declaring we need workers to come to our district, if we can’t retain them and keep them living here? They may indeed come for the jobs, but it is the connections, the opportunities, services, accessibility and sense of community that further cement a person’s inclination to settle down and establish their roots in a new place.

To put it more simply, I believe that people and economic growth are entwined.

We cannot support growth and investment without attraction and retention of labour, along with appealing to people’s

humanity and ensuring we are meeting their needs beyond that of an income.

Essentially, we are striving for a quadruple bottom line of people, profit, planet and progress.

So let’s support our district’s potential together, and seek to further the community appeal of our patch of paradise, so that new residents feel welcome, wanted and willing to call Ashburton District their home, while acknowledging that we can move forward together as a community, for the betterment of all residents.

Central Mali hit by violence NZME At least 95 people were killed in central Mali when gunmen stormed a village, carrying out an especially bloody attack in the West African nation, which has been gripped by surging extremist violence and ethnic tensions.

Nineteen other villagers are missing, officials said, as authorities continued to search for bodies.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the massacre in Sobane, a rural community populated mostly by people of the Dogon ethnic group.

In a statement, the Malian Government blamed “armed men, suspected of being terrorists,” who it said “launched a murderous assault on this peaceful village”.

The assailants also torched dwellings and killed livestock, officials said.

The latest violence follows a March ambush that killed more than 150 Fulani people in the same region, stoking concerns that the ambush was motivated by revenge.

Fighting has skyrocketed in recent years between the two ethnic groups, who have a long history of disputes. The Dogon people, whose roots as farmers in the area span centuries, have clashed over land with the Fulani, who are ma-

Helicopter crash rekindles New York fears AP For hours yesterday, fog had surrounded the skyscrapers in midtown Manhattan, hiding the upper floors behind a gauzy, greyish curtain.

About the time the latelunch crowd would have been signalling for the cheque, there were noises that seemed out of place, even in noisy Manhattan: the disturbing roar of an aircraft flying low, followed by what some assumed was an explosion.

A helicopter had crashed onto the roof of an office building on Seventh Avenue and burst into flames.

Only the pilot was aboard

the doomed aircraft when it hit the roof of the building. He was killed, and investigators were trying to determine if the helicopter was trying to make an emergency landing.

Alerts spread on cellphones and a smoky plume streamed through the fog, unnerving New Yorkers who wondered whether it had been an accident or had been deliberate.

And it rekindled memories of a far different day – September 11, 2001, when jetliners commandeered by terrorists destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Centre.

The memories of 9/11 were compounded as the 54-storey building was evacuated. Em-

ployees streamed down staircases as firefighters rushed in, heading to the roof.

But Governor Andrew Cuomo, who arrived quickly at the scene, said there was no indication of terrorism.

Cuomo acknowledged that the initial reports had jarred nerves. “If you’re a New Yorker, you have a level of PTSD, right, from 9/11,” Cuomo said.

“I remember that morning all too well.”

But in contrast to that bright, clear day, the weather was dismal. The visibility was little more than a mile and the cloud ceiling was low. Police Commissioner James O’Neill said the helicopter was flying

through restricted airspace.

The crash was the second involving a helicopter in less than a month and the latest of several fatal incidents in and around New York City in the past 20 years. It rekindled long-standing calls for greater restrictions on helicopters flying over such a densely populated region.

The helicopter’s home base was an airport in Linden, New Jersey, where Paul Dudley, the airport manager, identified the pilot as Tim McCormack.

He said McCormack worked for American Continental Properties, a real estate concern that said he had flown for the company for five years.

Sardinia plagued by locusts NZME An unusually large swarm of local locusts, estimated in the millions, is plaguing farmers raising sheep and other livestock in Sardinia.

The Italian farmers’ lobby Coldiretti says it has asked for government help, even though

it’s likely too late to save the hay crop and grassland that livestock needs.

Farmers have been trucking in hay from other parts of the Italian Mediterranean island, raising costs.

A locust expert, Alexandre Latchininsky, said that if the insects devour all the fodder, there’s a risk they could attack other crops, such as grape vines, on Sardinia. Adult locusts

can fly up to 640km in a night.

An official for the Romebased UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, Latchininsky told AP that it wasn’t immediately known why the locusts are so particularly numerous this year.

Sheep’s cheese is an important Sardinian product.

Ed Sheeran is reportedly poised to become a billionaire before he turns 30.

The biggest increase in the volume of meat and dairy products for five years helped drive increased manufacturing sales in the March quarter.

The volume of manufacturing sales rose a seasonally adjusted 2 per cent in the three months ended March 31, led by an 11 per cent rise in meat and dairy product manufacturing, Stats NZ said.

“The volume of meat and dairy products manufacturing sales had the highest percentage rise since the December 2013 quarter,” manufacturing statistics manager Sue Chapman said.

The increase follows a 2.4 per cent rise in the December quarter

The manufacturing survey is the final tranche of second-tier data economists use to firm up their forecasts for first-quarter gross domestic product.

Stronger-than-expected building work in the first quarter and a lift in wholesale trade had already led economists to believe the GDP likely held up better than expected.

The Reserve Bank expects growth of 0.4 per cent on quarter.

The data is due June 20.

Sales volumes for seven of the 13 industries fell in the March 2018 quarter. The largest decrease was in petroleum and coal products manufacturing, which fell 4 per cent.

“The fall in petroleum and coal products manufacturing reversed

a similar rise in the December 2018 quarter,” Chapman said.

“This industry mainly reflects petroleum manufacturing, and quarterly production volumes often move up and down sharply.”

The value of manufacturing sales rose 1 per cent, after dipping 0.5 per cent in the December quarter.

The value of meat and dairy products manufacturing sales reported the largest increase of 6.3 per cent.

Petroleum and coal products manufacturing sales had the largest decrease, down 13 per cent.

With price effects included, the actual total value of manufacturing sales was $28 billion in the March 2019 quarter, up $1.1 billion from the March 2018 quarter.

Kiwis found to be under-insured

Research commissioned by the Financial Services Council found most New Zealanders don’t like to think about the consequences of risks to life and limb – or to pay for financial protection against such risks.

“Our research indicates that despite recognising that financial risks exist and that they could cause significant disruption to day-to-day living, over 25 per cent of New Zealanders tend not to think about how they could be impacted financially,” the survey of more than 2000 people found.

“Over 40 per cent of respondents occasionally think about and consider this type of risk, but then forget about them.”

The research comes just weeks before the country’s life insurers are

due to report to regulators on plans to improve their performance.

The Reserve Bank and Financial Markets Authority reported in January that the first stage of their review of 16 life insurance companies found the industry is vulnerable to misconduct, is ignoring whether its products are suitable for customers and is too slow to make changes.

Those companies were sent follow-up letters detailing their individual shortcomings and requiring the companies to report back to the two regulators by June 30.

FSC chief executive Richard Klipin says the conduct and culture review wasn’t related to his organisation’s decision back in February to commission the research, but he acknowledges that it is relevant to how the industry behaves.

The survey, conducted by Horizon Research, highlights how fi-

nancially unprotected many New Zealanders are.

It found two-thirds of New Zealanders don’t have sufficient savings to cover an unexpected short-term loss of income for three months.

About one in three said they don’t need to worry about paying for medical treatment because of ACC or the public health system, but 37 per cent said they do worry about such costs.

The research found that unaffordable premiums were the biggest reason why people are under-insured, followed by insurance being “not a priority” and then by policies not representing value for money.

Previous FMA studies have concluded that only 2 per cent of sales of life insurance policies are genuinely new. However, the industry disputes that estimate.

American multi-national discount store operator Costco Wholesale is planning to open its first New Zealand store at the Westgate shopping centre in Auckland’s north-west.

The store will be about 14,000 square metres, have more than 800 carparks and will cost about $90 million. But the company can’t say when it will open.

“They still have a process to go through. It’s in the hands of the process and obtaining all the necessary consents,” a spokesman says.

The size of the new Costco store compares with The Warehouse’s average store size of a bit over 5000sqm.

The new Westfield Newmarket shopping centre due to open this year will be the nation’s largest at 88,150sqm.

Costco says it has already begun the process of obtaining the required consents and that building will begin as soon as those are obtained.

Sharing buttered goodness Finding time to sit down and enjoy a mid morning cup of tea or coffee with something buttered has all but disappeared from many people’s lives, but there is nothing nicer than a freshly baked loaf or warm muffins, pikelets or scones shared with friends or family as a weekend treat.

Lemonade scones

Banana loaf

4C self-raising flour 300ml cream (1 small bottle of cream) 1/4 C sugar 300ml lemonade 1/2 t salt

Cheese scones 2C flour 2t baking powder 1t sugar 1/2 t salt Pinch cayenne pepper (optional) 2C grated tasty cheese 1C full cream milk ■■ Preheat oven to 220°C. Put the tray in to heat.

■■ Sift flour, baking powder, salt, sugar and cayenne pepper into a bowl.

■■ Mix in cheese. Make a well in the centre.

■■ Check you have a clear bench with flour on it and that the oven is fully heated.

■■ You want the scones to go into the oven as soon as possible.

■■ Add the milk, mix quickly with a knife.

■■ Turn out onto a floured bench and quickly shape into a 3cm thick rectangle.

■■ Cut into 8 pieces and put on to your floured, hot tray.

■■ Bake for 15-20 minutes.

Ginger loaf 50g butter 1T golden syrup 1 egg 1/2 C soft brown sugar 1C flour 1t baking powder 2t powdered ginger 1t mixed spice 1t baking soda 3/4 C milk ■■ Pre-heat oven 190°C. ■■ Line a loaf tin with baking paper.

■■ In a large microwave-proof bowl or saucepan, melt the butter and golden syrup together.

■■ Add egg and brown sugar, mix well, then add all other dry ingredients except the baking soda.

■■ Mix the soda with the milk and stir in.

■■ Pour into prepared loaf tin and bake for 30-40 minutes or until cooked (when a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean with no fudgy crumbs attached).

■■ Cool on a wire rack, slice and butter when cool.

Ashburton

■■ Preheat oven to 220°C. ■■ Cover an oven tray with a sheet of baking paper or spray well with non-stick baking spray.

■■ Mix all ingredients in a bowl to form a smooth dough (the mixture is quite sloppy).

■■ Tip out onto a floured bench and form into a round.

■■ Cut into squares or rounds with biscuit cutter.

■■ Bake for about 15-20 minutes until starting to colour pale golden.

■■ Check they are cooked through and cool on a wire rack, covered with a clean tea towel (this keeps the scones lovely and soft).

1 3/4 C self-raising flour 1/4 t baking soda 1/4 t salt 1/2 C sugar 2 eggs 1/4 C milk 75g butter, melted 1C mashed banana ■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■■ Grease and line a 26cm loaf tin.

■■ Sift flour, baking soda and salt into a bowl. Mix in sugar.

■■ In another bowl beat eggs.

Stir in milk, butter and banana.

■■ Mix quickly into dry ingredients, stirring until ingredients are just combined.

■■ Spoon into the loaf tin.

■■ Bake for 45 to 55 minutes.

■■ Leave in tin for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool.

Moist date loaf 1C dates, chopped 1C boiling water 3/4 C white sugar 1t baking soda 1 large T butter 2C flour 1 egg 1t baking powder 1T golden syrup ■■ Finely chop dried dates.

■■ Put dates, sugar, baking soda and butter in a bowl.

■■ Pour over boiling water and mix.

Leave to cool.

■■ Once mixture has cooled, add the flour, egg, baking powder and golden syrup. Mix together.

■■ Spread into a loaf tin lined with baking paper.

■■ Bake at 170°C for about 45 minutes or until cooked.

Carrot muffins 1 1/2 C flour 2 eggs 1C sugar 1t vanilla essence 1t baking powder 1t baking soda 2/3 C vegetable oil 1/2 t salt 1C grated carrot 1/2 C crushed pineapple 1t ground cinnamon

Pikelets 1C plain flour 1t baking powder 1/4 t salt 1 egg 1/4 C sugar 3/4 C milk (approx) ■■ Sift flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl.

■■ In another bowl beat egg and sugar until thick. Add with milk to the sifted ingredients.

■■ Mix until smooth.

■■ Spoon tablespoonful amounts onto a hot, greased griddle or non-stick frying pan.

■■ Turn pikelets over when bubbles start to appear on the surface.

■■ Cook until golden.

■■ Serve warm with butter and jam.

■■ Sift dry ingredients into a bowl.

■■ Beat together eggs, vanilla essence and oil.

■■ Add to flour mixture.

■■ Add carrots, sultanas, pineapple and juice, mix well.

■■ Fill greased muffin cups and bake at 200°C for 20 minutes.

■■ Makes 12 large muffins.

Chiefs in amazing turnaround

HSOB overpower Celtic girls Taking it to the High School Old Boys (HSOB) defence on Saturday, was Kyla Smith from the Ashburton Celtic women’s rugby team. It was club day at Celtic, but it wasn’t Celtic’s day when it came to the day’s main games, with the seniors, senior Bs and the ladies all beaten. The Celtic ladies lost to HSOB 63-0 and while it wasn’t a great day at the office, Georgia Lysaght and Georgia Clarke produced a couple of stand-out performances.

Emotional Highlanders farewell for Ben Smith NZME Family members, friends and rugby teammates have shared an emotional farewell to All Black and Highlanders great Ben Smith ahead of potentially his final week with the franchise.

Smith has been with the Highlanders for more than 10 years but with their Super Rugby playoff hopes looking slim, this Friday’s game against the Waratahs could be his last in blue.

In a video on the Highlanders’ official Facebook page, those close to Smith shared heartwarming tributes to the fullback.

“We’re so proud of you and it’s just been an inspiration to all the young ones coming through,” said Smith’s dad Stu. “It’s been a fantastic journey right through Otago, the Highlanders, the All Blacks.

“You’re amazing on and off the field. We love ya.”

“What a journey you’ve had Ben,” added his mum Karen.

“And you’ve taken us the whole way with you.

“We’ve loved every minute of it. We’ve met so many cool people.

“You’ve done so many amazing things.

“You’re an amazing dad.”

Smith’s partner Katie and his two kids Walter and Annabelle also shared a cute message.

“We’re so proud of you for so

many reasons,” said Katie.

“For all that you’ve done with rugby but also for how awesome you’ve been as a daddy.”

The 33-year-old, known as Bender, is headed for French club Pau later this year following the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

He was presented with a multi-team shirt during a special presentation after the Highlanders’ draw against the Bulls on Saturday.

The shirt also included colours and emblems of the Otago, Green Island, Highlanders, and Kings High School teams.

Highlanders team-mate Ash Dixon said it was a privilege to play alongside Smith.

“Even though you’re probably the greatest player to ever play for the Highlanders and one of the greats in New Zealand rugby, you’re even a better mate and a great friend,” said Dixon.

Smith was the 37th player to join the New Zealand Super Rugby centurions club and only the fourth player to achieve 100 Super Rugby games with the Highlanders following in the footsteps of Anton Oliver, Jimmy Cowan and Chris King.

Smith, who debuted

for Otago in 2007, joined the Highlanders in 2009 and quickly became a key member of the team with his uncanny ability to break tackles and elude defenders.

He made his All Blacks debut in 2009 but didn’t become a regular in the side until after the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He’s played 75 tests for the All Blacks and 150 for the Highlanders, the first to reach the mark for the franchise.

et’s not sidestep the issue here – until the Chiefs beat the Reds in Hamilton last month they were an on-field shambles.

Hurt by injuries and an apparent inability to follow a game plan, they had the second-worst defence in the competition and were on target to finish as New Zealand’s worst team.

Now they are potentially a win over the Rebels away from qualifying for the quarter-finals (they need a couple of favours, including the need for the Stormers to beat the Sharks in Cape Town).

How did they turn it all around?

How did they go from a nightmare run of losses at the start of the season, including home defeats to the Sunwolves and Lions, to winning the occasional match and losing the next, to being a couple of favourable results away from the finals?

Brad Weber is one factor. The halfback has been inspirational for the Chiefs with his leadership and ability to spark an attack.

But I would argue Sam Cane’s return from his broken neck has been even more significant. One of Richie McCaw’s greatest qualities was his ability to get his team over the line through his force of will and fellow openside Cane is increasingly showing that he has something similar.

Cane made his return from that horrendous injury suffered last year during the Chiefs defeat to the Blues at Eden Park nearly four weeks ago, but they’ve won both games he has started since, including that match against the Reds at Waikato Stadium that visiting coach Brad Thorn is still wondering how they lost such was the attacking dominance his men enjoyed. Cane played the first 49 minutes of that.

They had no right to beat the Crusaders in Suva either after being 20-0 down after the first quarter. Cane played the full 80 minutes there, a performance which would have struck a chord with many rugby people around the world given where he was prepared to put his previously very vulnerable body.

Certainly, it did with Blues coach Leon MacDonald.

“Sam Cane’s leadership showed immensely,” he said a few days later.

“It shows how influential certain players can be on and off the field.”

So, they have a couple of key inspirational figures and the belief and knowledge they can now get through just about any game scenario.

They also have the not inconsiderable figure of Brodie Retallick returning from eight weeks out with a wrist injury.

Now as fit and fresh as he has been for a long time, Retallick is determined to throw his weight around in Melbourne on Friday.

Warriors keep finals alive AP Stephen Curry scored 31 points, Klay Thompson added 26 and they led a season-saving surge that gave the Golden State Warriors a 106-105 victory over the Toronto Raptors yesterday in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

The Splash Brothers combined for three straight 3-pointers in the closing minutes after Toronto had taken a six-point lead with under 3½ minutes remaining in front of a raucous, red-shirted crowd.

The Warriors lost Kevin Durant barely a quarter after getting him back but got the win, cutting Toronto’s lead to 3-2 and sending the series back to Oracle Arena for Game 6 on Thursday.

Kawhi Leonard scored 26 points for the Raptors but couldn’t get the final shot, having to give the ball up.

The two-time defending champion Warriors were minutes away from their title reign ending, having lost Durant and a 14-point lead during an emotionally exhausting game.

They had controlled Leonard for three quarters, but he scored 10 straight Toronto points in the fourth and the Raptors were close to their first championship and a cel-

But even after everything the Warriors had lost, they still had two of the best perimeter shooters in the world on the floor.

Thompson hit a 3, and Curry followed with one to tie it at 103. Golden State got it back to Thompson and the Raptors lost sight of him just long enough for the tiebreaking shot with 57 seconds to go.

Toronto cut it to one when Kyle Lowry was credited with a basket and the Raptors got a final chance when DeMarcus Cousins was called for an illegal screen.

Leonard had the ball but the Warriors forced him to pass and it ended up in the corner to Lowry, who was way off as the buzzer sounded.

Cousins had 14 points for the Warriors and Draymond Green finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

Golden State is the only team to lose a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals, when Cleveland came back to win in 2016.

Now the Warriors have a chance to pull off the feat themselves, but it became more difficult after Durant limped off in the second quarter after he had missed the previous nine games with a strained right calf.

Losses for Coll, King

Defaults mar senior B rugby Two defaults featured in the latest round of Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Centennial Mug senior B competition. Mt Somers defaulted to competition leaders Rakaia, while – not for the first time this season – a player shortage also forced Hampstead to default their match to Allenton. In the games that did go ahead, Collegiate just got past Southern 27-26, while Methven beat Celtic 34-12.

It proved a difficult day for top Kiwi squash players Paul Coll and Joelle King at the World Tour Finals yesterday.

In the early match Paul Coll lost a dramatic finish in his contest against No.4 Karim Abdel Gawad 5-11, 11-13 in 40 minutes and then in the women’s side of the top eight player event Joelle King suffered a hard-fought loss to Welshwoman, Tesni Evans in three games.

King had lost the previous day to Frenchwoman Camille Serme in three games and found herself in trouble early on against Evans who was in control for the majority of the first game.

Evans took the first set 11-9 in 11 minutes, but in the second the Kiwi 30-year-old fought back well to take it with a more decisive effort 11-7.

The third and final game looked to be too easy for Evans as she raced out to an 8-3 lead.

However King edged her way back from a bad tumble in what was to become a stop-start affair as the umpire became involved regularly in disputed calls. King pulled the score back to 8-8 and looked like she could take the lead, but yet another questionable call went against her as Evans took the point and eventually the match 11-8 in a total game time of 38 minutes.

Skipper’s form key for the Black Caps

By Niall Anderson It was no surprise when Kane Williamson brought up 50 against Afghanistan, raising his bat to acknowledge his 38th half-century in ODI cricket.

The potentially surprising part, however, was the fact it was just the second time he had reached that mark in a World Cup match.

Williamson’s unbeaten 79 in the seven-wicket win over Afghanistan was his highest score in 15 World Cup innings, and the first time he had passed 50 since the opening game of the 2015 tournament, against Sri Lanka.

It’s a statistic that is probably more of a curiosity than a concern – his knock against the Afghans boosted his World Cup average to 45.2, just shy of his overall ODI average of 46.5.

Additionally, in 2011 he had two unbeaten knocks batting at six, and was twice left standing in 2015 as well, with opportunities for a big score not particularly prevalent.

Still though, after finishing the 2015 World Cup with knocks of just 1, 33, 6 and 12, and having not scored an ODI century since March 2018, starting the 2019 edition with a 40 against Bangladesh and a 79 not out against Afghanistan has the skipper building nicely ahead of the gruelling part of the Black Caps’ schedule.

“It was just nice to build a couple of partnerships, which is really important when you’re chasing,” offered Williamson, notorious for deflecting when asked to comment on his own form.

The Afghanistan innings was a sensible knock, having walked out to the middle to face the second ball of the innings.

One inside edge, and the customary run-out scare,

were the only loose strokes offered, as Williamson paced himself, moving from 25 off 50 balls, to 42 off 72 balls, and finishing up on 79 from 99 balls.

The slow scoring rate could be seen as a concern – Williamson looked a bit scratchy in making 40 off 72 balls against Bangladesh – but with the Black Caps bowlers having restricted opposition to small totals, Williamson had the opportunity to pace himself, and played smartly to avoid the Black Caps being in early strife.

“It’s been a little bit different each time and guys have had to adapt and basically try and chase the total down as clinically as possible,” said Williamson, providing his perspective on pacing the Black Caps’ run chases.

“We’ve had three mid-totals [to chase], and you want to try and get a bit of stability going into some of those later overs because every team in this competition have world-class wicket takers within it.

“And if you give them a sniff, then they can run away with it.”

They’re unlikely to be able to chase similar scores against the teams looming in the next few weeks, while after winning the toss and choosing to bowl on three occasions, the Black Caps may soon also have to set a sizeable score.

Both will be significant challenges, and Williamson will have to raise his bat a few more times if the Black Caps are to continue their World Cup winning run.

Meanwhile a washout is on the cards when New Zealand and India face each other in the cricket World Cup. South-east England has been hit by a deluge and the bad weather is heading north leading to official rain warnings for the game which starts on Thursday night (NZ time).

Pitman living the dream NZME A decision by the owners of Enzo’s Lad has enabled Michael Pitman to experience a lifelong dream in England.

As the Canterbury trainer says, he is “living the dream” as he soaks up the atmosphere in the countdown to his first appearance at Royal Ascot next week.

Pitman and his wife, Diane, are in Newmarket, England, preparing dual Gr.1 Telegraph Handicap (1200m) winner Enzo’s Lad for the first day of the Royal Ascot meeting next Tuesday.

And no matter the result, he has already made himself a promise.

“This won’t be the last time I’ll be here,” Pitman said.

“My ambition will be to come back again. I’ll be out to find another one good enough to come over here.

“I’ve always loved the racing game and I was always going to find a way to get to Royal Ascot one day.

“At home I sit up and watch Royal Ascot every year. I love its history. It’s the best racing in the world and it’s where it all started.

“To be part of it is simply a

dream come true for me.

“It’s the absolute highlight of my career.”

Pitman is overwhelmed with the racing scene in Newmarket, amazed at the constant string of richly-bred horses going out to work on the various training tracks scattered around the town centre.

“The other morning I watched John Gosden send out a string of 57 horses in one hit and that’s not unusual over here,” he said.

“It’s amazing how many track riders they have here.

“Honestly it blows my mind.”

Pitman has Enzo’s Lad based at the stables of Jane Chapple-Hiam and describes it as “horse heaven.”

“Jane has been so good to us and she looked after Enzo’s Lad before we got here,” Pitman said.

“He loves it over here and why wouldn’t he?

“Our neighbours are Saeed Bin Suroor, John Gosden and Sir Michael Stoute, legends of the turf.”

The Pitmans have been overwhelmed by the welcome they have received in addition to the broad media coverage.

The English media has been quick to pick up on the hard-

ships Pitman has gone through, particularly his battle with bowel cancer.

It’s a fight which Pitman was determined not to stop him from getting to Royal Ascot and en route to England he received an email which lifted a great weight off his shoulders.

While at Los Angeles airport he opened the email which notified him of the all-clear after having to have an operation in Christchurch halted midway through surgery last month when some polyps were discovered.

“The results have come back and all is ok,” Pitman said.

“What a relief it has been. Now we don’t have that hanging over our heads so we can enjoy Royal Ascot even more.

“It’s a trip of a lifetime and we’re making the most of it.”

But when Enzo’s Lad tailed the field home in the Gr.1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m) at Sha Tin last start, Pitman said he almost cancelled the UK trip.

“After Hong Kong I threw my hands up and was going to go straight home with him,” he said.

“But I left it up to the owners and they really want to go to Royal Ascot.

“Just about all of them are coming over and they’ve organised their top hats and tails.”

Pitman is fully aware of the class of the field in the Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes (1000m).

But he has been heartened by the form reversal of last year’s winner Blue Point after finishing last in the same Hong Kong leadup, the Chairman’s Prize Sprint.

“Blue Point is going to be hard to beat again and there’s another one or two they are all talking about,” Pitman said.

“But just to have a runner will be special for us.

“People might think we’re mad coming over here, but it’s an experience I will never forget.”

Provided Enzo’s Lad comes through next Tuesday’s race in good order he will back up on the last day of the Royal Ascot meeting four days later in the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes and Pitman, who trains in partnership with his son Matthew, said he may stay on for the Gr.1 July Cup (1200m) at Newmarket on July 13.

“Matt’s got a seven month-old baby and he can’t be here, but he can say he is part and parcel of an international training combination,” Pitman said.

The usual post-Jewels scramble to buy New Zealand stock has been in full effect over the past ten days.

Headlining a number of sales is 3YO Emerald winner, Jesse Duke, who has been purchased

by American-based former Kiwi trainer, Chris Ryder.

Victorian Co-owner Jean Feiss confirmed on Monday that she and husband Bill had sold their three-time Group 1 winner.

But he would continue to race for trainers Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen a little while longer, though.

“He’s been sold, and the deal finalised, but I believe he will go to Brisbane first,” Feiss told HRNZ. The $75,000 Queensland Derby at Albion Park on July 20 would be his first target for Ryder, part of a four-horse Queensland delegation by Purdon and Rasmussen, the others being Princess Tiffany, Speech Is Silver and the Feissowned Self Assured.

Both the third and fourthplaced horses in One Change’s 2YO Emerald were the subject of intense buyer interest and both have had ownership changes.

Zeuss Bromac, celebrated driver Zachary Butcher’s first runner as a trainer, has undergone an ownership restructuring after finishing third at just his second start. Butcher and his fellow owners, including father, David, received offers from multiple Australian stables, including Perthbased trainers Gary Hall Snr and Greg and Skye Bond.

Ultimately, Melbourne-based Lynette Philpott agreed to buy out her fellow owners rather than see the horse sold elsewhere.

A pair of Canterbury three-yearold fillies are heading to America next week.

Shecandance, who finished mid-pack in the 3YO Diamond won by Belle Of Montana, will head to the New York stable of Jose Godinez after being purchased out of Robert Dunn’s barn.

And owner Katie Carville is understood to have sold the exciting Millwood Bonnie, who recently recorded impressive back-toback wins for trainer Steve Dolan.

Co-trainer Greg Hope confirmed over the weekend that Kingslayer, a four-race winner who placed at Ashburton last Sunday, has been sold to the Perth stable of Greg and Skye Bond.

NZ Cup start on the agenda for Soho Tribeca HRNZ Comeback star Soho Tribeca will chase the NZ Cup, but not the Auckland Inter Dominion.

The gifted pacer returns from almost a year out when he tackles next Saturday night’s Italian Cup at Melton.

Trainer-driver Mick Stanley will

then keep him based in Victoria, bypassing features in NSW and Queensland, to focus on a New Zealand Cup raid.

“Obviously everything depends on how well he comes back, but you have to plan ahead and Rob (Watson, owner) and I have talked through it all,” Stanley said.

“The Inter Dominion, with the

four runs in two weeks, just isn’t the right way to go with him after the injury he’s had.

“But Rob is super, super keen on the NZ Cup and so am I. “We’re building everything around the NZ Cup as his main target this year.”

But shaping plans for Soho Tribeca is just part of the exciting

but challenging equation for Stanley, who boasts his strongest stable ever.

Two of his stars, Rackemup Tigerpie and Soho Burning Love, won feature races at Melton last Saturday.

Rackemup Tigerpie’s sparkling first-up win in the free-for-all was both exciting for him and a great

guide for Soho Tribeca’s progress.

“They work together at home and trialled together last week where Soho Tribeca did a bit more work and Rackemup Tigerpie just edged him out,” Stanley said.

“The way Rackemup won last night really gave us confidence Tribeca was right on target for next week.”

Bell making up for lost time NZME John Bell was missing from the New Zealand training ranks for 13 years, but he’s certainly making up for it.

The Cambridge horseman, formerly of Kihikihi, experienced a personal record as a trainer last season with 13 wins, including two Group Three vic-

tories by Julius, and already this term he has bettered that win tally with 16 victories and the promise of more to come before the end of the season on July 31.

His stable has been consistently churning out the winners with Noble Star, Ata Rangi and Yorkshire Dales providing three on end over the re-

cent Te Rapa meeting and the exciting Helena Baby careering away to complete a hat-trick at Ellerslie.

It’s no coincidence that Bell has formed a successful link with Asian owners. It stems from the time he was a horse-feed sales representative during his absence from training.

“I spent 20 years selling haylage to

the Middle East,” Bell said.

That travelling and contact with clients led to Bell being encouraged to renew his trainer’s licence.

“I had been buying a lot of horses for Asia and having them pre-trained here then sent up,” Bell said.

“In the end I decided to do the training myself again.”

Helen Rennie and Mark Sheard finished runner-up in the New Zealand Indoor Bowls Masters Pairs yesterday.

Bowlers go close to national title Ashburton indoor bowlers, Mark Sheard and Helen Rennie have fallen narrowly short of adding another national title to their repertoire.

Competing at the New Zealand Indoor Bowls National Championships in Rotorua, the pair made their way to the final of the Masters Pairs yesterday and put up a courageous fight only to be beaten on an extra end by a centimetre.

Down three shots going into the last end, the pair, playing out of the Ashburton MSA club, picked up the required shots to bring the scores level against Bronnie Read and Colleen Riddock from North Taranaki.

Sheard had a chance with his last bowl to snare the required shot to win the game

but just didn’t quite get the result he wanted.

In the open event also played yesterday at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre both Ashburton players looked right in contention before falling at the round of 16 to dip out of the competition.

Willowby’s Grant Wilson, who finished in the top eight in the singles on Sunday, and his sister, Fiona Keegan of Tauranga looked set to go deep into the competition with wins against some strong combinations yesterday morning before they were beaten in the last 16.

It was a case of very much the same for Ashburton’s other player in the open event, Michael Lawson. He, and fellow New Zea-

land representative Daniel French breezed their way through the early stages before also being knocked out in the last 16 stage of the tournament.

Today players will be back in action for triples qualifying with Lawson and French teaming up with former Ashburton player Simon Thomas to defend their title.

Sheard is also the defending champion in the triples event having won it in Ashburton last year, this year he teams up with Cecil Tubb and Chris Guy. At the completion of today’s qualifying rounds the annual Northern and Southern Zone Academy and Masters matches will be played with a number of local bowlers involved.

Hours of work are 10.00am to 2.30pm.

Applicants should have New Zealand Residency and a current full driver’s license.

Mid Canterbury Combined’s 1510 loss to Roncalli College on the rugby field on Saturday could have been different, had a bit of luck been on their side.

The sixth round match of the Crusaders region’s secondary schools’ rugby competition – the UC Championship – against the Timaru side was one that the combination Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College side had targeted to win, and they came

agonisingly close.

So coach Brent Middleton said to lose was disappointing, although it wasn’t a bad performance.

“In big parts of the game they did play well, but they did go to sleep at times, too,” Middleton said.

“It was close, but not close enough.”

He said it was a good game of rugby.

“It was very intense and very tight and I imagine, and from

talking to a few spectators, that although the result didn’t go our way, it was a good game to watch,” Middleton said.

Roncalli were first on the board with a penalty, and that was followed by a good team try from the home side, which was finished off

by Tom Middleton to give Mid Canterbury Combined a 5-3 lead.

But it was short-lived, with Roncalli scoring a try of their own to lead 10-5, before Christian Thompson got one back for Mid Canterbury just before half-time

to make it 10-all at the break.

Both sides performed well in the second half, and Mid Canterbury put a lot of pressure on before the visitors pounced and took the lead with what Middleton called an opportunist try.

Mid Canterbury Combined created a lot of opportunities late in the game, and were unlucky not to score, with the bounce of the ball and a couple of dropped passes letting them down.

the game, and went away from their game plan a little when they needed to show patience.

They’d take the performance and build on it though, and knew they’d need to step things up a notch against a strong St Thomas of Canterbury side this Saturday.

Mid Canterbury Combined are again playing at home at the Ashburton College field this weekend, and Middleton said the visiting side will be one of the more physical teams they come up against.
