SHARPLIN FALLS

Iconic walkway may reopen By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Mt Somers Walkway Society members are mapping a new route to Sharplin Falls and plan to reopen the iconic Mid Canterbury attraction to the public. The Sharplin Falls Track is a

short walk at Staveley which has the scenic waterfalls as its destination. It closed permanently four years ago due to earthquake-triggered rock-falls. Society members have been discussing their plans with the Department of Conservation.

They do not yet wish to make any of the details public, saying they are at a sensitive stage of planning as they have yet to submit their final design to the department for approval. Department of Conservation operations manager Duncan Too-

good, in the Geraldine District Office, said the department would be giving consideration to the plans when they were submitted. “We are aware of the society’s plan and have been in discussion with them, but have yet to see a final proposal,” Toogood said.

There were various considerations that the department would need to make with such a proposal.
