Some farmers north of the Rakaia River may have to return to dryland farming practices if groundwater levels do not recover before next summer. Groundwater levels in Mid Canterbury though appear to be improving and aquifers should be in reasonable shape for the next irrigation season, says hydrologist Dr Tony Davoren. Davoren said the Ashburton Dis-
trict had largely escaped the effects of low rainfall recharge; the water level in an observation bore at Pendarves had shown consistent recovery since irrigation stopped in March. Environment Canterbury groundwater science manager Carl Hanson said groundwater levels in shallow monitoring wells had recovered after heavy rain in April, but it was taking longer for the recovery to propagate to the deeper wells.
“In contrast, your northern neighbours have not seen the same recharge and the situation is looking pretty grim,” Davoren said. “Water levels are still so low many bores cannot yield sufficient water to run irrigators.”
