Tennis star Djokovic weds Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic and his longtime girlfriend Jelena Ristic wed yesterday in a gazebo civil ceremony on a lawn at an Adriatic resort. The event, held in a park above a beach close to the luxury Montenegro islet Sveti Stefan, was attended by “the families, close friends and some hundred guests,” said a source close to the families who requested anonymity. The 27-yearold Djokovic – who won his second Wimbledon title on Sunday – and Ristic are expecting their first child later this year. According to local media reports they rented all of islet resort, which is occupied by a fortified village built in the 15th century, to maintain privacy. Djokovic and Ristic also arranged to have the nearest beach closed to the public to prevent intruders or paparazzi getting close.

Bieber vows to focus on work Canadian pop star Justin Bieber has vowed to focus on his music after he was convicted of vandalism for egging a neighbour’s house. The singer pleaded no contest to a misdemeanour vandalism charge this week, stemming from the egging incident in January. Bieber, who was sentenced to five days of community service and ordered to pay $US80,000 ($NZ90, 675) in damages, has now spoken about the matter through his legal team, insisting he’s determined to put the furore behind him. “Justin is glad to get this matter resolved and behind him. He will continue to move forward focusing on his career and his music,” a statement said.

Martin offended George RR Martin (below) has given the finger to the suggestion he might die before finishing the Game of Thrones books. The work involved in piping the Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation Scheme (ALIS) is bigger than anything in the Christchurch rebuild, and right up there with any national civil engineering project, BNZ irrigation development manager Guy Ensor says. Construction on the $100 million-plus scheme’s second stage

is under way, and yesterday shareholders and industry representatives took advantage of an open day to see the progress first-hand. Pressurised water will be delivered through a combination of storage ponds, hydroelectric turbines, races and pipework extending 230km and covering 30,000 hectares of farmland. It will only require three addition-

al booster pumps, shaving thousands of dollars off the cost of pumping water out of ditches. The scheme is second in area only to the Mayfield Hinds Irrigation Scheme, but ALIS has more shareholders, board chairman John van Polanen said. “It’s a big spend for the shareholders, without getting down to the last one or two, shares are being transferred around a bit

Piping is a more efficient option, as it prevents water loss through leakage and transpiration, and will eventually free up more than 100 hectares of land currently used for open races.

The ALIS project slots in with the Canterbury Water Management Strategy drive to achieve efficient, sustainable water use, and will assist farmers to comply with pending environmental regulations. The first of the five zones in the current scheme will be ready to go in just over 12 months and the rest will come online over the next three years.

Contaminated land identified Risk to health low, say officials

Environment Canterbury (ECan) has identified hundreds of Mid Canterbury properties as potentially contaminated by former land use. The information was available on ECan’s Listed Land Use Register. The owners of 448 properties in the district were notified in May. ECan said the database of possible land pollution sites in Mid Canterbury did not include any schools. In Christchurch 124 schools were listed on the site – 29 with more than one possible pollution type. Four of the schools were former landfill sites. ECan said Mid Canterbury properties that were former horticultural sites such as orchards or market gardens had not been included in the register. “These have not been identified in the district yet,” an ECan spokesperson said. There was not expected to be many. However there were some that had been subdivided for residential houses. When properties were listed in the register ECan looked at a range of former activities on the site. They had 53 categories of hazardous activities and industries listed (HAIL) as causing potential contamination.

They included transport depots, scrap yards, wood treatment or preservation and bulk storage of treated timber, service stations, storage tanks for fuel, chemical or liquid waste, motor vehicle workshops, skin or wool processing plant, power stations, substations and switch yards. Most involved fuel storage tanks. When property owners were notified, ECan investigations

and monitoring director Ken Taylor said only a small percentage of landowners would need to act. “People have a right to know what their land has been used for in the past if it could have contaminated the soil. Most people receiving notification will not need to do anything. It’s only those landowners needing to carry out major land repairs, foundation work or rebuilds as a result of the earthquakes who

will have to take any action,” he said. ECan notified 11,000 property owners in its region this year. There were 19,000 sites in total. Ashburton District Council building services manager Michael Wong said any land identified on ECan’s listed land use register was identified on property Land Information Memorandum (LIM) reports. The register was available through the ECan website.

Land that was cleared would also remain on the database but identified with the results. Landowners unsure on what they needed to do should contact ECan.

Health officials say there is a low health risk to people from living on contaminated land. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Ramon Pink told landowners in a press release it was “very unlikely that the level of contamination will be high enough to result in any health issues”. “Even if a property is contaminated, it is very unlikely that the level of contamination will be high enough to result in any health issues,” Dr Pink said. Dr Pink said there were simple things people could do – such as washing hands after being in the garden, keeping soil outside by removing shoes before entering the house, use door mats or closing windows on windy days. The Community and Public Health website recommended people washed fruit and vegetables thoroughly before eating, kept good grass cover on areas children played, do not let children play on bare soil and regularly wash toys used outside. However, people were advised not to keep chickens if the land was contaminated. It was up to individuals to investigate, manage or fix contaminated land even if it was caused by the previous owner.

Family home a supreme winner A family home in Ashburton has been named this year’s finest in Mid and South Canterbury, winning the Supreme Award in the region’s Registered Master Builders 2014 House of the Year Awards last night. BY THOMAS HEATON Fun is in store for all visitors of a model train show this weekend, even the older visitors will find it hard to restrain their inner child. The Trains on the Plains Ashburton Train Show is visiting, displaying a variety of layouts from Kaiapoi to Dunedin. Long-time model train enthusiasts have joined to show off their layouts and their favourite past time. The show will have a wide variety of scenes, ranging from trains in outer space to classic countryside scenes. Organiser Rob Read, of Orari, has been an enthusiast for 20 years and his own layout, Pipers Flat, never seems to be completely done. “There is always something to be done,” Mr Read said. He always wanted a train set as a child, but got into it later in life when someone offered him a few pieces.

All of the layouts are of electric-powered model trains, but there is one that stands out. Grahame Reid, of Christchurch, will be atop the stage with his layout, made entirely out of Lego pieces. Mr Reid’s layout is over seven metres long and two metres wide, filled with its very own town, including a monorail and hospital. He had to use a special program on his computer to configure the layout of the train tracks so he knew how to best use the space. He then fills the gaps with a township, which takes him around six hours, he said. “This is a way to get young people into it,” Mr Reid said. He said the speed, movement and colours are all attractive to children. The show is on today and tomorrow from 9.30am to 4pm at the Tinwald Memorial Hall.

When Catherine Trott locked her office door last night, that action signalled the end of Ashburton’s administrative ties to the care organisation, Victim Support. For the past 11 years Mrs Trott has been the string that has bound Ashburton’s team of 10 volunteers together, doing everything from running their roster to providing a listening ear when the emotional going got too tough for her people in the field. She’s moving on, her position has been amalgamated with the Timaru office, but her team remains. And they, she said, are the real face of Victim Support’s work. “We have a great team of

people here and in my time we’ve never struggled to get volunteers.” Those volunteers work on a roster that can see them called out at any time to provide a listening ear and practical help and advice to people suffering after a traumatic incident. That could be sexual abuse, a bereavement, an accident or family violence. Most call-ins come from police, but they can be self-referrals or from individuals or community organisations. The definition of victim is different for everyone, but the service is there for anyone who needs help, Mrs Trott said. “We’re not there to be counsellors, however; we’re there to give support, to give information in the initial stages

following an emergency. If there’s a need, we involve other helping agencies and we have some wonderful groups in our community that pick up from there.” Victim support’s assistance was short term but there were occasions however, when the trauma was deep and a longer term involvement is needed, she said. Work as a victim support volunteer is not for everyone, and not everyone who signs on for training makes the grade. “People are interviewed and the undergo an intensive training period with on-going training and towards the end of that they can pull out or we can say that we don’t think they’re right for this field of work.” No matter how well trained

you are, the work is not easy, and at times it’s difficult for volunteers not to become too involved, Mrs Trott said. “That’s part of my job. To keep an eye on them, to pull them back if I think there could be a problem. There are some pretty emotional situations because you’re working with people who are traumatised. Best bangers a tough test for butchers Ashburton butchers are being challenged to make New Zealand’s best bangers. The 21st national sausage competition is under way and butchers around New Zealand have an opportunity to test their sausage making creativity, pitting their skills against their peers. Head judge and food writer Kerry Tyack believes New Zealand had come of age in terms of its sausage making, with the number of high

quality entries increasing each year. “It’s wonderful for sausage loving Kiwi consumers who relish the better access to more variety, better quality and greater choice,” she said. More than 450 sausages across 11 categories will be tested before the highest mark in each category will be tasted in the final to find the Supreme Award holder. The winning bangers are those that a true to their con-

tents, with a fine balance of flavour and texture. “We look for sausages that pull out all the stops, both technically and in palate appeal,” Ms Tyack said. This year, the judges will also hand over to the public to help determine who will receive the 2014 People’s Choice Award. Sausages are anonymously judged within their categories, with each judged by at least two judges and an aver-

age score taken. Medals are then awarded for the marks received. From there, the sausages which received the top mark in each category are re-judged against each other to find the Supreme Award winner and the People’s Choice Award winner. Entries in the Devro New Zealand Sausage competition close on August 15 with the final judging in Auckland on October 14.

Strains, sprains and contusions were common injuries in Friday the 13th ACC claims last month. The date was traditionally considered unlucky by people with superstitious tendencies. However, last month there was also a full moon - a time often used to justify the erratic behaviour of people. It was also opening day for Mt Hutt skifield. Needless to say there were accidents on the date - 22 people in the district made a claim to ACC. Five injury claims were from sport. Soft tissue injuries such as strains, sprains and contusions were the most common with 15 claims. These were followed by lacerations and punctures. There were three stings. In total all the claims cost $2807. Nationally there were 3710 claims at a total cost of $484,158. They included 2296 soft tissue injuries, 817 lacerations or punctures or stings, 307 fractures/ dislocations, 72 foreign body in orifice/eye and 62 dental injuries.

Chemical spill Fire service officers were called to a chemical spill at an industrial park in Hawke’s Bay yesterday. Central fire communications shift manager Murray Dunbarr said around 30 fire officers had been at the scene of an unidentified chemical spill since 3.55pm at the Whakatu Industrial Park. Chemicals were reported as leaking from an upper floor of a building. - APNZ

AOS called out A 37-year-old man was arrested after the Armed Offenders Squad was called to a domestic incident involving a Taser in Southland. Around 7.45am yesterday, the Invercargill AOS squad was called out to an incident in which a woman had been assaulted. A 12-year-old and a 10-year-old were present in the house at the time, police said. The man was heavily intoxicated and was in possession of a Taser. Dreamliner finally lands By Grant Bradley Air New Zealand’s long anticipated Dreamliner has touched down at Auckland Airport. Four years later than originally hoped, the plane landed around its scheduled arrival time at 4.22pm yesterday. Around 45 Air New Zealand staff greeted the plane at the airline’s engineering base. One engineer Stu Rentoul, an said “it’s great to have it finally here.” “It’s a lot different. It’s a flying computer. Flight NZ6789 was to have circled the city but had to abandon the plan because of bad weather and to keep close to schedule. The 787 Dreamliner will be the first of 10 delivered to the airline and will replace aircraft that are no longer as fuel efficient. In its present configuration the plane will seat 302 passengers and be used initially to fly to Australia. While the airline has fixed an October date for flights from Auckland to Perth, it may put on earlier services to Sydney. Three planes are due for delivery before the end of the year and they will also be used to fly to Shanghai and Tokyo. the world made the 14-hour delivery flight which took off from Paine Field at Boeing’s Everett factory north of Seattle. The airline first ordered the Dreamliner a decade ago. Its initial order was for the earlier model 787-8 but when it changed to the next model 9-series – which is 6m longer and has new features – it hoped to have it by 2010. However, production delays caused largely by outsourcing to suppliers around the world, design problems and labour disputes pushed the whole programme back. It struck problems again soon after coming

into service when overheating batteries forced the global fleet to be grounded for three months. The lithium ion battery system has undergone extensive modifications. The plane uses technology designed for the military by Boeing, most notably extensive use of carbon fibre in the fuselage and parts of the wings. This makes it lighter, providing improved fuel economy of 20 per cent on the 767 aircraft it is replacing. New technology on the tail, first used in the military, allows air to flow more easily and reduce drag. It also has new cabin features

– bigger windows, more optimal pressure and levels of humidity and revolutionary lighting – which is aimed at making long-haul journeys more comfortable. Fuel savings and cabin comfort are particularly important to airlines such as Air New Zealand which flies many ultra-long haul routes where fuel can make up nearly half the cost. While the plane will be more economical to run, the airline has said it will keep “downward pressure” on fares rather than necessarily leading to reductions in ticket prices. - APNZ

With a Stranger . . . an aerial spectacle A dimly lit stage with little more than scaffolding sufficient to support an aerial rope didn’t lessen my expectations about what was to come. Dust Palace, an Arthouse Circus ensemble from Auckland and the only dedicated aerial studio in that city, enthralled an appreciative audience at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre last night. The story of a man working in the lost property department of the world who re-distributes the items he collects, evolves through aerial movement. Problems are created however, as the circus theatre characters have to decide between allowing life to control them or stand up and make their own decisions. This is Arthouse circus at its very best … depicting strangers and lovers who at times, act as though they have absolutely no knowledge of the other, but have to work through their emotions to make connections. The storyline aside, the high-

light was the visual display of fluid and seemingly effortless aerial work shown with a minimum of equipment. Gasps of disbelief were often audible as the audience witnessed body movements probably unattainable by the majority of those present. Strength, trust, respect and passion for the task in hand was demonstrated equally by all six members of the ensemble as they worked with hoops, a high rope scarf and most of all each other. A standing ovation indicated just how much the audience valued what they had seen and the young ones present are sure to dream of following Arthouse circus as a career. I suspect I am beyond that, but nevertheless I would encourage those who are not the most enthusiastic about rugby, to book a seat for tonight’s performance by Dust Palace. Part of the current Ross Cemetery has quietly slipped out of Westland District Council ownership. Ross residents working on a goldmining Chinese heritage project were clearing gorse on the edge of the cemetery three weeks ago when they heard that someone claiming to be the landowner was “upset” scrub was being cleared without authority. Biddy Manera, who has been leading the project, said she alerted the council straight away after checking public records and finding part of the graveyard indeed appeared to be on a private title. She had previously sought council permission to search that part of the cemetery as it was thought to contain the remains of a Chinese burial. The area was clearly part of the cemetery with old gravestones smothered by scrub. Ms Manera said the private title also took in lawn currently mowed by the council contractor, and she believed it contained unmarked graves. The council had assured her it would fully investigate the anomaly. A search of public records revealed the land in question was owned by Mary-Anne Potae, of Whataroa. She could not be reached for comment yesterday. The land title also names Allen John Bates as a previous owner. The cemetery itself is divided across four titles, with the main part of the cemetery and access from State Highway 6 under council ownership on two titles. Title of the western fringe is listed under a Queenstown address. Council chief executive Tanya Winter said her staff were fully aware of the situation at Ross Cemetery. “At this stage, we cannot confirm how a section of the cemetery ended up being in private ownership. This is being currently investigated,” Ms Winter said. The initial investigation revealed that “it appears likely” the part now privately owned could be the result of “a survey error”. Ms Winter said council staff had been in touch with the adjacent landowners to discuss options to sort the boundaries. “This matter is being treated as a high priority.” - APNZ

Coroner criticises DHB over death

The Chief coroner has criticised the Northland doctor and the district health board for failing to notify his office about the death of a man who died after doing the ice challenge and drinking a large amount of spirits. The New Zealand Herald revealed yesterday that Willis Tepania had done the ice challenge on Saturday night and

followed it with a large amount of bourbon. About five hours later he suffered a heart attack. It is understood he died in Whangarei Hospital on Monday night. The death was not referred to the coroner in a timely matter and paper work was not filed until after Mr Tapania’s funeral.

Yesterday, Chief Coroner Judge Neil MacLean said he was “concerned” with the response to the death by Northland DHB staff. “It seems a doctor was prepared to sign a death certificate in circumstances that, in my opinion, were not appropriate. I am satisfied there are issues surrounding the death that meant the duty coroner should

have been notified promptly,” he said. “It has also emerged that the standard report of death form that is prepared by the hospital for the duty coroner was prepared but not sent for some days. “When the duty coroner was finally informed and took jurisdiction of the death, it emerged Mr Tepania’s body was already buried.

“My office will be raising the matter with the Northland Chief Medical Officer,” he said in a statement. The case has been referred to Coroner Wallace Bain. Northland DHB spokeswoman Liz Inch said the health board would not make any comment. “This case is in the hands of the coroner”. - APNZ

One of New Zealand’s best known and well-loved songwriters is joining forces with a touring indie artist to perform three intimate shows in Canterbury this winter, including one in Methven. As famous for her hilarious on-stage banter as for her phenomenal voice, award-winning singer and songwriter Anika Moa will join Mel Parsons for shows in Christchurch on July 23, Methven on July 25 and Springfield on July 26. Both artists starred in the Fly My Pretties 2013 Homeland Tour line-up and both are currently working on new albums. The winter shows will see them sharing songs new and old with fans. “I have just about finished making the new record and this tour will give my fans the opportunity to hear some of my new work for the first time along with the hits,” Moa said. Teacher banned from teaching over texts A teacher who sent intimate texts to a 10-year-old student has been banned from teaching, but he says he will never teach again anyway. Bart de Jong engaged in text messaging with the pupil in his class throughout December 2011, according to a Teachers’ Disciplinary Tribunal decision released yesterday. She was moved into a differ-

ent class in the second term of 2011, at which point he was warned by the school principal to be aware of the student’s infatuation with him. He began texting her again but when the girl’s mother contacted the school, he denied the allegations. Messages included comments such as “I wish there wasn’t this age gap between us,” and “you

know I like you”. The girl’s parents made a formal complaint to the board of trustees and police and de Jong was dismissed from his employment with the school for serious misconduct. He was charged with sexual grooming of a young person and appeared in court in 1012 but was later found not guilty. At the time, the judge criti-

cised legislation around the issue, and called the teacher’s conduct “deplorable, disturbing and predatory.” De Jong had opposed being named in the decision and in a written submission took responsibility for his actions. De Jong had his teacher’s registration cancelled and was censured and ordered to pay more than $3000 in costs. - APNZ

A Dunedin woman on a longhaul flight to visit her daughter in Hawaii died from a condition often associated with deep vein thrombosis. Gillian Browne, a 65-year-old mother of four, was on a 12hour Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Los Angeles last Friday when the tragedy occurred. Ms Browne’s former husband Brent Browne said she was going to visit her youngest daughter who was holidaying in Hawaii. Ms Browne’s family were heading to Dunedin to prepare for the arrival of her body, he said. A date for her funeral had yet to be set. A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman said the New Zealand ConsulateGeneral in Los Angeles been in contact with Ms Browne’s family and repatriation of her body was under way. Ms Browne’s City Catering company was contracted to operate the Dunedin City Council staff cafeteria and a catering service for council functions since 1997. Former councillor Neil Collins said Ms Brown was a delightful woman who he had became good friends with over the years. Sergeant Karla Ortiz from Los Angeles International Airport police said CPR was unsuccessfully performed on the Ms Browne after the plane arrived in Los Angeles. A post-mortem examination was performed two days later. Los Angeles County Coroner spokesman Lieutenant David Smith said Ms Browne died as the result of a pulmonary thromboembolism – caused by a blood clot entering one of the main arteries leading into her lungs. - APNZ

lthough change is often tentatively approached, educational institutions have almost universally embraced technology as a tool to aid in teaching. Children are exposed to technology from birth. Whether it be for games or educational use, they are becoming “tech-savvy” from an early age. Knowing their way around a computer so early in life can, most certainly, affect children in a positive manner. New Zealand’s Ministry of Education has acknowledged this and has pledged to help by boosting services. Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president and Methven Primary School Principal Chris Murphy believed, generally, schools are pro technology. Mr Murphy said anything that generates students’ engagement and interest is beneficial, and technology fits that bill. In the case of Methven Primary School, students encounter technology from their first day of school through until their final days of Year 6. The new entrants’ class has a “pod” of iPads the children can use on a daily basis, with one device for every two students in the class. Mr Murphy said the school was planning to encourage children to bring their own device as part of a BYOD

programme, which would then mean more resources for each class. Parents may question whether children get unnecessarily distracted by the technology, but Mr Murphy found he was “not often disappointed”. “[The devices] can be used for recreational purposes, but generally speaking it’s used for educational purposes; if they enjoy it that way, it’s an added bonus,” Mr Murphy said. Mr Murphy said it was a factor the parents may need to be educated on. A country-wide scheme to educate parents who are slow on the technological uptake has been rolled out recently in Ashburton, Computers in Homes. The initiative is mainly aimed at educating parents to help them further their understanding of their children’s’ education so they may be able to take an active role. Computers in Homes Christchurch co-ordinator Sue Davidson attributed the uneasiness to a lack of understanding. “It’s being scared of the unknown, that’s part of the course … to familiarise and get rid of the fear,” she said. Part of the fear for New Zealand’s parents is seeing the internet as an unregulated expanse of detrimental information, but educating your child on responsible internet

Educating children on how to avoid objectionable and potentially influential material can hopefully mean positive outcomes. Trust, communication and understanding and keeping active communication channels open are the best parental controls for internet use, Ms Davidson said. Though, the 605 parent study showed positive results, with 80 per cent of parents saying they have talked to their children about the importance of online safety and 67 per cent are “confident”

their children understand online security safety. Net Safe executive director Martin Cocker saw three challenges which arise with children using the internet: Content, conduct and contact. The three factors are what children see, what they are doing on the internet and who they may be in contact with over the internet, Mr Cocker said. Two out of three 12-15 year olds will have their own mobile device and use it for social media, games and education and will be open to all of these risks. New Zealand’s parents believe the most appropriate age, according to the study, for a child to start using mobile devices is 10 years old, although many will have used tablets or something of the sort long before then. Mr Cocker said the best way to ensure the safety of children is to cater to them with their age in mind. When they are younger, take a directly-protective, monitoring role, and as they get older a more supportive

role, Mr Cocker said. Ms Davidson said that although people may not be able to completely eradicate the unsavoury content on the internet, the positives outweigh the negatives. “On the flipside, imagine if we were without it [the internet]” Ms Davidson said. Although some may not accept technology as a suitable resource in schools, the government certainly has. The Ministry of Education has decided to provide 99.9 per cent of New Zealand’s pupils and 97.7 per cent of schools with ultrafast broadband, acknowledging the importance of technology. Those who are not eligible will get the next best thing, whether that be a satellite dish or whatever may be best for the schools’ situation. The Labour party has also jumped on the tech-friendly education bandwagon, pledging to put a laptop into the hands of 31,000 students, from Years 7 to 13, as part of their schools’ policy. In the past, before the government had decided to invest in the broadband scheme, schools have had to foot the bill for security and firewall systems. Mr Murphy said security could be part of the broadband provided by the government, which means a hefty sum of money will be saved and could be used elsewhere. “We’ll be able to use the money on the shop floor, rather than in the backroom,” he said.

Six months’ home detention

By Sam Hurley A Hastings council tractor driver has been sentenced to six months’ home detention for causing the death of a 4-yearold boy in a mowing accident last year. The 72-year-old man had pleaded guilty in Napier District Court in May to driving a motor vehicle dangerously causing the death of Uetaha Dahtanian Ransfield-Wanoa. The tragedy occurred at Kirkpatrick Park in Hastings on October 8, 2013. In court yesterday, the man applied for permanent name and image suppression. Judge Jonathan Down declined name suppression but granted permanent suppression of his image. However, he granted in-

terim name suppression until Monday. The man had lost his young son in an equally tragic event some years ago and that the “horrific” and incredible sad incident had “brought much of it back”, the judge said. The man was also sentenced to 100 hours’ community work, was disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to pay reparation of $5000 to Uetaha’s family. Judge Down said that on the day of the tragedy three children were chasing the mower. “You stopped, turned around to them, called out to them to stop, tooted your horn and waved and tried to shout them off but despite your best efforts they continued to chase the mower,” he told the man. The judge said Uetaha sat

down before standing up and running on an angle towards the mower. Judge Down said a witness told police Uetaha was 35 metres to 40 metres from the mower when he started running and eventually sidestepped towards the mower. He said the boy tried to move out of the way “but by then it was too late”. He said CCTV footage showed no signs that the mower was slowing down when it ran over the Uetaha. He said the man, who was suffering from genuine shock and remorse, should have stopped the mower when he saw the 4-year-old run towards him. Judge Down said the police serious crash unit noted that the children were unsupervised

by an adult and that the man come across a “hazard of children”. A letter of regret from the man was read to the court by his lawyer, and said: “words can not say how sorry I am for this terrible accident that we will have to live with for the rest of our lives”. Crown Prosecutor Clayton Walker said that despite the tragic consequences for both families, the man should have stopped mowing. “A witness from over the road was about to head over to the park because he was worried about the children chasing the mower.” Hastings District Council is also being prosecuted over the death by WorkSafe New Zealand. - APNZ

Jigsaw puzzle a blast from the past When food chain Four Square celebrated its 90th birthday last week, the event had Ashburton people digging in their cupboards for store memorabilia. Margaret Cullimore dug deep and found an old jigsaw puzzle that was given to her as a child. She believes it dates back to the 1940s. “My uncle had a Four Square store in Christchurch, on Yaldhurst Road and my brothers and I used to go and stay with him,” she said. She recalls being allowed to bag sweets as a treat and loving the novelty of living behind a shop. The jigsaw puzzle was well used and survived Mrs Cullimore’s own children. When it came to grandchildren, it was kept out of reach. Today it tells the story of products past and products that have endured. Its future may be in the archives of the new Ashburton Museum, she said.

Teacher censured over physical confrontation A teacher has been censured for pulling a student from a vehicle, putting his hands around his throat, and swearing at him. In a Teachers’ Disciplinary Tribunal decision released yesterday, it was revealed that the unnamed teacher was asked to supervise a junior rugby team’s away game in 2011. It involved driving the school’s minibus with the team

on board, taking them to their game, then dropping them home. According to the teacher and other witnesses, two senior rugby team members became disruptive on the return journey. When the teacher pulled over to drop another player off, things came to a head and a physical confrontation ensued. The teacher pulled a senior

player out of the van, put him on the ground with his hands around his throat and said “Do you like it when I say f… you”, the decision said. He then left both senior students on the side of the road. He never reported the incident to the school principal and later said he hoped nothing would surface. However, the student’s parents later accused the teacher

of assaulting their son. The incident did not go to the Disciplinary Tribunal for another two and a half years. In its decision, the tribunal agreed the teacher had neglected two students and failed to tell the school about the incident. By elliot Parker The small community of Tauherenikau in Wairarapa is mourning the loss of two teenage brothers who were killed in a car crash on Thursday. Sam and Angus [Gus] Donald were on their way to the coast in the early afternoon to go fishing when their 4WD utility left the road. It went into a ditch, then wove across the road and smashed into a tree. Sam, 19, and Gus, 15, died at the scene. The extended Donald Family is well known in Wairarapa, especially in the farming community, and the two brothers were the sons of Tracie and Dave Donald. Mrs Donald broke down in tears as she described the family’s loss. “They were just brothers being brothers – doing what boys do,” she said. “All I can say is that they were precious, precious boys and we are just so proud of them. “It’s a tragic accident and we are devastated we didn’t get a chance to say goodbye.” Gus was in Year 11 at Rathkeale College and was a star sportsman. His older brother had left school and was working at a hunting and fishing business in Otaki. Gus had only just returned home after winning the “down the line” clay-shooting North Island Secondary Schools’ Championship in Hamilton last weekend, which a third brother, Bayley Donald also attended. The family are renowned as top shooters. Sam left Rathkeale in 2012. He was also a keen shooter, captaining the Rathkeale shooting side in his last year at school. Rathkeale principal Willie Kersten said the two brothers, who had been boarders at Repton House, were “salt of the earth”. He said the Donald family was well known in Wairarapa and their parents were “full of support” for the boys and school. South Wairarapa Mayor Adrienne Staples spoke of the boys’ good nature and family values. “Angus and Sam Donald came from a family that loved and supported them. They were really nice young men,” she said. South Wairarapa District councillor Colin Olds said the family was an “integral part of the community”. “The whole community is just reeling. Our hearts really do go out to David and Tracie,” he said. “I didn’t see the boys much, but they were goodspirited boys. It’s just very, very sad.” - APNZ

Gutted, but lucky to be alive By Sophie Ryan and LauRa MaxweLL An emotional Scott Donaldson says he will be “irked for a long, long time” after having to be rescued from high seas just a few kilometres from completing a three-month odyssey across the Tasman Sea in a kayak. Mr Donaldson was winched from his kayak on to a rescue helicopter off the Taranaki coast yesterday afternoon after enduring terrible weather in the most harrowing 24 hours of his journey since leaving Coffs Harbour in New South Wales on April 19. Mr Donaldson had been tantalisingly close to finishing and becoming the first person to paddle solo across the Tasman, and could even see Mt Taranaki at one point, but bad weather this week kept him at bay and frustratingly pushed him further away. He was also injured on Thursday night as his kayak was thrashed by the big seas. What was expected to take him a few more days if he had kept going was cut to around an hour by chopper yesterday. Sporting a long beard and still wearing his kayaking gear, Mr Donaldson was met by his wife Sarah when he touched down at Taranaki Base Hospital yesterday afternoon. She gave him a hug before they walked to a waiting ambulance. Mr Donaldson, 44, was checked over by doctors then took the chance to shower and shave and put fresh clothes on before he spoke to media at the hospital. He spoke with emotion as he told how much he was hurting after not finishing his journey. “I didn’t hit the finish line and that irks me deeply and that will

irk me for a long, long time,” he said. “I didn’t want to go home.” Mr Donaldson said he felt gutted when he saw the helicopter arrive to pluck him from his kayak, which he described as “wearing thin” following the “nastiest night” of the journey. “I was 36 or 34 miles short and that really gets me,” he said. He said the decision to call off his mission was not made based on emotions. “It wasn’t hard to make the call.” He said if he had gone through the bad weather forecast for last night he would have risked losing communications.

He asked to be rescued after suffering injuries to his face and chest when the kayak rolled three times during the night and his harness broke. Taranaki Rescue Helicopter pilot Mike Parker and crew member Andy Cronin spent 40 minutes at Mr Donaldson’s location 83km off the Taranaki coast to get him on board safely. Mr Cronin said Mr Donaldson seemed upset but relieved to get onboard the helicopter. “He was chatty but disappointed,” he said. Mr Parker said the only visible injuries Mr Donaldson had suffered in the rough conditions on Thursday night was a bang

to his nose. “He didn’t let on he was too hurt,” he said. Mrs Donaldson said she was very relieved to have her husband home and was proud of him. “He is so strong and determined and that sense of character is priceless.” Mr Donaldson said a third attempt at crossing the Tasman was unlikely but thanked his supporters and apologised for not finishing. Students fail to complete trip to the skifield By ReBecca Ryan A van-load of Oamaru high school students bound for Ohau Snowfields did not make it to the slopes after their van lost control on black ice and rolled off the road yesterday morning. It was one of four black-ice related crashes in the Omarama area within two and a half hours. Constable Nayland Smith of Omarama police said the Youthtown van, carrying seven

Waitaki Boys’ and Girls’ High School pupils and two adults, lost control on Prohibition Rd at about 8am. The van slid across the road, before rolling at least once and coming to rest on its roof. The Oamaru secondary school-aged pupils were shaken, but no one was seriously injured. Mr Smith said the Omarama area was treacherous yesterday morning. “The whole area [was] cov-

ered in ice for a good couple of kilometres,” he said. About 6.30am, a Twizel woman hit black ice on State Highway 8 and slid off the road, coming to rest on a grass verge. Shortly after, a truck and trailer unit lost control on the same stretch of road and hit a van on the side of OmaramaTwizel Rd. “The van had very little damage until the truck hit it,” Mr Smith said. “It was too unsafe for the

[male truck driver] to stop and go back. He continued on and reported it in Cromwell.” The driver was not in the van when the truck hit it. A Twizel woman was shaken, but uninjured, after the 4WD she was driving lost control on SH8 about 9am, Mr Smith said. The vehicle, and the horse float it was towing, came to rest facing the wrong way on Omarama-Twizel Rd, about 1km from the first crash. Locals knew the area was

“quite bad” for black ice. Mr Smith said some of the roads had been gritted, but they had been struggling to get all of the affected areas done in time. He urged drivers to be extra careful driving in the area this winter. “Be aware of the surroundings, make sure you drive to the conditions and if you’re not sure, slow down anyway,” he said. - APNZ

harles ‘Chas’ Eaden never visited the newly formed Ashburton Menz Shed before he died. But in death, the Ashburton engineer has gifted its members several thousand dollars worth of engineering tools and equipment. They are now located in the newly dedicated Chas Eaden Room, a section of the Menz Shed premises. The gift included a lathe, welding gear and all metal stocks including bars, shafting and alloys that all came from Mr Eaden’s home workshop in Ascot Place. Included were a number of specially homemade items, such as the three gear 250cc Suzuki engine used for the key cutting machine. The gift was arranged through Mr Eaden’s sons John, of Wellington, and Greg, of Queenstown as neither son was interested in keeping the equipment. Among the items is equipment collected by Chas and his father Frank Reynolds (Ren) Eaden. Chas took over the reins of the Mid Canterbury harvesting and gorse cutting business his father operated for many years. Ren was renowned for his attire – he wore a hat and tie at work - even in the workshop. In early years spare parts were hard to come by so they made their own to keep their equipment operating. As a result both became self-taught precision engineers and between seasons took in general engineering work in a large workshop on Trevors Road. Father and son were well known in Mid Canterbury for their ability to find solutions to engineering problems and people came from far and wide when they needed something fixed. Ren designed a vice, later patented as the Eaden Vice. Its unique jaws could swivel and could hold any shaped object while it was used. John said his grandfather designed and patented the vice but did not sell many, despite attempts to market them in the US and Europe. A small version of the vice is among the equipment gifted. When Chas retired to a new house in Ascot Place in the 1980s, he had a small workshop on the back of his garage. In this workshop he continued to do small engineering tasks up until he died this year at the age of 87. “It’s the sort of equipment that we don’t see these days. They are part of a bygone era,” son John said while visiting the Menz Shed recently. A condition of the gift was that Menz Shed took everything in the workshop lock, stock and barrel which turned out to be a significant job. It took members about two weeks to relocate it to its new home on State Highway 77. But it was a task they were only too happy to do.

“For us, it’s been really good that we were able to see all the equipment kept together in one place and that it will continue to be used by people who appreciate it,” John said as he looked around the Menz Shed premises. “It’s a fantastic organisation, dad would have approved of his equipment being here,” he said.

In brief Coach’s holiday? A break in New Zealand has been a bit of a busman’s holiday for Ireland rugby coach Joe Schmidt. After overseeing Ireland’s series win in Argentina, Schmidt visited family and surveyed the international under-20’s tournament, some Super rugby and the national First XV competition. He flew out last night and is due at his desk on Monday from where he will reveal an assistant to replace John Plumtree as Ireland plan for the start of their next test series in November. The All Blacks are not on that list this year but their work and ideas are never far from Schmidt’s probing mind as he looks towards next year’s World Cup. “If you play the best teams you make advances yourself, and that is always the benefit of playing someone like the All Blacks,” he said. - NZH

The experienced shooter, first capped 11 years ago at the world championships in Jamaica, is preparing for her first. She’s also a bit of a pragmatist and knows, in all probability, that as she’ll be 37 in 2018 this could be her only Games. Unless, of course, she displays the longevity of the just-retired Irene van Dyk, who dropped her last shot a couple of weeks shy of her 42nd birthday. She’ll miss van Dyk. “I had a little inkling something might be coming up but I really hoped she wouldn’t [retire],” Brown said. “So when she gave me a call there were lots of tears shed. We were close mates back to when she first came to New Zealand. I was her first shooting partner and no one sits down to have a cup of tea with me like her,” she said with a laugh. - NZH

Chiefs cling to lifeline By Patrick Mckendry The Chiefs have kept their hopes of three consecutive Super Rugby titles alive with a win at Eden Park last night which owed much to their ruthlessness in the wet and windy conditions and a fair bit to a Blues team who were anything but. In doing so they consigned the Blues to their first defeat at what was their fortress in a difficult and frustrating season for them. They are out of the playoffs frame now, their miserable night compounded by what was thought to be a calf injury to their warrior Keven Mealamu after only 19 minutes. Hooker Mealamu, who came on to so much deserved fanfare in his 162nd Super Rugby match, equalling former Wallabies lock Nathan Sharpe’s record, cut a disconsolate figure as he limped to the sideline. A Ma’a Nonu yellow card for a shoulder charge which flattened Tim Nanai-Williams, in what was probably Nonu’s final match for the Blues, was another depressing element to a match in which John Kirwan’s team got their tactics all wrong in the first half. A late charge saw George Moala score with 12 minutes remaining to narrow the gap to 11-8 and set up a tight finish but the Blues failed to capitalise.

The closeness of the final score will be no consolation. It did provide the Chiefs with a few nervous moments, however. The home side’s defeat also cost the Hurricanes a place in the finals, and heaven knows what the supporters of Mark Hammett’s team were thinking as their agonisingly frustrating season also came to an end. Looking for a miracle win by more than 38 points which would have given them a lifeline, the Blues took leave of their senses in the first 40 minutes, turning down three shots at goal within the first 10 minutes and running everything despite the appalling

conditions. Not once did they kick for territory, despite having an extremely strong north easterly wind at their backs and a determined and connected Chiefs’ defence in their faces. The Chiefs, needing the victory to continue their season, were never put under sufficient scoreboard pressure. Steven Luatua, Patrick Tuipulotu, Jerome Kaino and Brendon O’Connor all went close, but they couldn’t breach, and as the Chiefs do, they soaked it up and fired it back. Amazingly, the Blues were still in the contest at the start of the second half, and a change in tactics saw Ihaia West success-

ful with his first shot at goal to equalise, but, as they sought to apply the pressure, a West pass was intercepted by Liam Messam, the All Blacks loose forward going in from 50m. It was a difficult night for the Blues inside backs Bryn Hall and West, both outplayed by their opposites Tawera KerrBarlow and Aaron Cruden. All Blacks first-five Cruden struggled with a his goalkicking but his running game was on target, as was, crucially, his option taking. What happens on tour stays on tour. That’s a tricky situation for a sports reporter tagging along with a rugby team. They wished they had a “hot lady reporter” on the trip, but were stuck with me. It was a cold and frosty start to the shield trip. As I boarded they joked “hope you brought your boots. If we have any injuries you’re the only spare we’ve got”. All I had was a camera, two lenses, a laptop and a change of clothes – and luckily the jest never rang true. There was plenty of down time, with over 24 hours to kill before kick-off, but never a dull moment - generally because of the colourful banter from a certain yappy halfback constantly filling the void of silence.

After arriving in Pukekohe the team settled into the hotel and then headed to the stadium for a light training run, and then it was back to hotel and a few games of cards. After a relaxed morning and a trip to a bowling alley, where assistant coach Geoff Frew schooled them all, there was a walkthrough in the car park as the team began the countdown to kick-off. The team had a pre-game meeting at the hotel where the intensity in the voices could be heard from the lobby, before the steely-faced Hammers walked out to board the bus. It was an eerily quiet two minute drive to the stadium. There was no talking, barely a sound, but you could almost hear the focus and intensity building. Unfortunately, that intensity was blown away by an opening salvo from the Steelers that

netted 14 points inside of five minutes. All of a sudden a bloodbath looked ominously on the cards, and the buzz from the visiting fans was somewhat subdued momentarily. The Hammers came back with venom to narrow the gap with a converted try to Jon Sharpe, getting some redemption from the 2002 shield clash with Canterbury when Andre Renata plucked the ball from his hands to score the lone try that day. A penalty closed the gap to 12 and on the brink of halftime they went oh-so-close to a second try, one that would have changed the complexion of the game completely, and the crowd were on their feet as they went up the tunnel. The buzz was back and so to the belief. Alas, a stronger start to the second half was undone by one

simple mistake and Counties swooped in for a try. The momentum swung back the hosts’ way and they scored another three tries, while the Hammers kept on coming without reward until the final whistle. There was some disappointment in the sheds, but they knew they could hold their heads high for how they played. The trip allowed me a unique inside look at how the team operates, and I witnessed first-hand the level of professionalism in the preparation and planning that the coaching staff has installed and that the players have bought into. They may not have come home with the shield but they showed they will be up for claiming back-to-back Meads Cup titles. As for the post match activities – what happens on tour stays on tour.

Penney back in black Kirk Penney hasn’t been sighted in a Tall Blacks uniform in recent years but he wasn’t going to miss out on the chance to play in his fourth World Cup. The shooting guard last turned out for the national side in 2011 as niggling injuries and the need for a break following strenuous European club campaigns rendered him unavailable. But one plus side of his Turkish outfit Trabzonspor failing to make the playoffs this season was it meant the off-contract Penney finished in May and has enjoyed a break recently. The 33-year-old arrived in New Zealand a week ago and was pleased to be back in the Tall Blacks environment as the side began their preparations for the World Cup, which gets under way in Spain in late August. - APNZ

After an arduous few months of training and preparation, Mayfield rower Emma Dyke departed for Europe earlier this week to compete in the Under 23 World Rowing Championships in Varese, Italy at the end of the month. Dyke is among the 34-strong New Zealand Under 23 rowing team that are well prepared for the event, her second world championship regatta in as many years. “I’m pretty excited, but I guess like last time I’ll get a bit nervous when we get there,” Dyke said. Last year Dyke was in the New Zealand junior women’s coxless four for the 2013 World

Rowing Junior Championships in Lithuania. This year she has stepped up to the under 23s, and comes into the women’s coxless four alongside existing members Johannah Kearney (Southern RPC) and Kelsi Walters (Auckland RPC) while Olivia Loe (Southern RPC) was in the under 23 quad last year. Prior to leaving on Tuesday, Dyke had been based at Cambridge near Lake Karapiro, as she was last year, but this time she was flatting with her crew mates. Having been there and done that last year Dyke has had an easier time this year, “knowing what I was expected to do”. The preparations haven’t been as smooth as they would

have liked, with Loe only just back in the boat after a shoulder injury. “In the second month in we had a bike crash. “We were out on a training ride and there was a bit of a pile-up with a few scrapes and bruises but Olivia broke her shoulder.” Loe was back in the boat last week for the final lot of race practice in New Zealand, where they performed strongly. “On the Sunday we did a 98 per cent of the world record, a 6.40 with the world record being 6.34.” That was on familiar waters, and they now have two weeks to acclimatise to the lakes at Varese. “We are training on a differ-

Top medal hopes for New Zealand in Glasgow By kris shannon The majority of the Kiwi team have left the country, preparations in Glasgow are undergoing finishing touches and the 20th Commonwealth Games is less than a fortnight away. What better time to project whether New Zealand’s athletes can surpass their Delhi haul of 36 medals - six of

them gold - and rise above their 11th-place ranking from the 71 competing countries. At first glance, it’s entirely possible, but awfully difficult to predict. After all, four years ago in India, who could have foreseen Mike Collings and John Snowden claiming shooting gold? Who could have guessed New Zealand would finish with 22 silver medals?

There is no heavier hitter, to begin with, than Valerie Adams. If there were one outcome on which a punter would be safe betting not only their house but also the neighbours’, it’s the women’s shot put. Adams has been undefeated in the discipline for 51 events, she’s the reigning Commonwealth, world and Olympic champion. Lock in gold for Val.

A similarly sure thing is the sevens team. Not only have New Zealand won every gold medal since the sport was introduced in 1998, but Gordon Tietjens’ men have never lost a match in Commonwealth Games competition. Hunt full-on for ticket scalper By Laurent thomet An executive from the World Cup’s official hospitality services firm has escaped out the back door of his plush Rio de Janeiro hotel to avoid arrest on charges of illegally selling tickets, triggering a police manhunt. Raymond Whelan, a British director of Fifa partner company Match Services, fled the luxurious Copacabana Palace Hotel after a judge ordered him and 10 other suspects to be held in detention, the Rio prosecutor’s office said. “The Englishman fled through the hotel’s back door and is considered a fugitive,” Rio police said in a separate statement. “We saw him in (security) footage leaving in a hurry,” Fabio Barucke, the case’s lead investigator, was quoted as saying by the G1 news website, adding that Whelan had fled just an hour before police arrived. Police are hunting for Whelan, who is accused of being involved with a scalping

Whelan, who denies the charges, was initially arrested at the same hotel on Monday but was granted preventive release the next day. His passport was seized by the authorities. Police filed charges against him and 11 others on Thursday and submitted the case to prosecutors, who requested an arrest warrant against all except one who was co-operating with investigators. Prosecutors said the 12 suspects face charges of organised crime, illegal ticket sales, corruption, money laundering and tax fraud. Ten of them are in jail, except for Whelan and the suspect who is cooperating. Rio prosecutor Marcos Kac voiced concerns that Whelan could have applied for a new passport. “Since there was no arrest warrant against him (until Thursday), he could have asked for another passport at the consulate,” Kac told Agen-

Brazilian investigators believe Whelan facilitated the distribution of tickets and was above Fofana in the hierarchy of the scalping network. Police say Whelan gave VIP tickets to Fofana that were originally meant for non-governmental organisations, sponsors and families of players. Fofana sold them illegally with the help of travel agencies and high contacts in the football world, investigators say. Some 1000 tickets were sold per game for around 1000 euros. - AFP

Big Ben ready to chime again By DaviD Skipwith Warriors forward Ben Matulino is looking forward to returning to action in tonight’s clash against the Parramatta Eels after paying for his own tickets to watch their last two games at Mt Smart Stadium. Matulino revealed he took the chance while recovering from minor knee surgery to join friends among the crowd and watched on from behind the goal posts as his team-mates went about beating the Brisbane Broncos and Penrith Panthers. “I’ve been watching from the north stand, I actually bought my own tickets as well. I went and sat with some mates for both games against the Broncos and Panthers and it was pretty good,” he said. “I’ve surely missed it [playing] but I’ve enjoyed watching from the crowd and it’s a whole different game from there, commentating to yourself. “It’s pretty good though, waking up the next day knowing the boys got the win. “But it’s good to be back. I’m pretty stoked to be coming back into the team with them playing well over the last month.” Matulino, whose last appearance was in the second row against South Sydney in Perth on June 7, has been named on

the bench for his 144th first grade appearance. With Sam Rapira out of tonight’s match with a back complaint and Queensland prop Jacob Lillyman backing up from Wednesday night’s third State of Origin match, the 25-year old will provide some vital goforward from the front-row. Matulino says he will shelve his trademark offloads this week as he concentrates on getting through his core roles in his comeback game. “For me it’s just about playing my best and trying to keep a stake in the team. A week of highlight reels on the telly S ome weeks there’s not so much good stuff on the TV, live sport-wise. And other weeks are like the past seven days. A veritable flood of mustwatch sport, and the first night of the week was possibly the best. While it’s of no use whatsoever trying to persuade folks who won’t be persuaded that Formula One is a genuinely entertaining sporting spectacle, I’ll just say that watching the action from car-cam as they dice for position, with somebody’s front wheel actually in between another car’s front and rear wheels while they’re doing 270km/h is both frightening and exhilarating all at the same time - definitely entertaining. That was at Silverstone, and while F1 took top billing, Kiwi drivers Richie Stanaway (GP3) and Mitch Evans (GP2) took top positions on their respective podiums, this is in cars that are only a heartbeat slower than the top guys who get all the glory, and their races are

equally as exciting as Hamilton, Alonso, Rosberg and new Aussie star Daniel Ricciardo. Go the Kiwis! There was an awful lot of channel-hopping, because a couple of clicks across the remote was Novak Djokovich desperately trying to win another rare slam title, while on the other side of the net was a man many have been writing off for two years now, Roger Federer. Yes, the young guns are baying at his heels, and no, he hasn’t quite got that ultimate turn of brilliance and speed any more - but he was there at final time, and the young guns weren’t. Federer also has 17 Grand Slam titles to his name - the young guns collectively have none. Maybe he won’t win another slam, but he will win plenty of other tournaments; he’s still the man. There was rugby. There was league. There was V8 Supercars. And there was the Tour. More than two and half

million people turned out to cram the roadsides in Yorkshire, when the organisers took a huge gamble and started the Tour in the middle of the English countryside - it looked more like decision day up in the Pyrenees, with the massive crowds all decked out in their finery, lunatics to the fore as normal. Every year all the stories come out of drug abuse and cheating (The Tour de Farce), but it is so strong an event it survives, prospers and flourishes, much like the NRL does. The same commentating team (Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen) has returned, and they are very, very good - except they have brought their Mark Cavendish fixation back with them. When Cavendish crashed out

early on, I rejoiced and thought that would be the end of that - but no, the next night, when the heat was on at the finish, it was all Mark Cavendish would do this, Mark Cavendish would have done that, and Mark Cavendish’s team were doing the other. The next night, come sprintto-the-finish time, Mark Cavendish was mentioned no less than a dozen times. Hey fellas, he’s NOT THERE! Move on, please! The rest of the week was also crammed with outstanding sporting action, including our own boys trotting out on to EcoLight Stadium to have a lash at the Log ‘o Wood. Unfortunately, even when they were running out of the tunnel it looked a bit like the skinny white boys v the big fellas, and that’s how it turned out to be. An incredible experience for every player though, and one that will only benefit them when the defence of the Meads Cup comes around, and that’s real soon.

Frances Redmond, 16, has been selected to represent New Zealand as part of the women’s under 17 touch team. Redmond said she only started formally playing in year nine,

when she started her secondary schooling at St Margaret’s College. But she had been playing informally long before then, with her brothers and father. She frequently went to the Collegiate Rugby Club grounds on a Thursday night with her father to play touch, Redmond said. After Canterbury’s recent suc-

cess at the national tournament, placing second, Redmond was selected to represent the country. “I didn’t expect it whatsoever, there were so many players at the tournament,” she said. The team will be heading to Caloundra, Australia in September, to take part in the country’s national tournament and will be hitting it out against their best.

Though the trip is a few months away, there will be no rest for the young Ashburton touch player. She is training throughout her holidays to make sure she passes a fitness test in a few weeks’ time. She is one of four young women selected to wear the black singlet from the Canterbury squad.

Andre Greipel admitted he was relieved after finally returning to sprint form to claim yesterday’s sixth stage of the Tour de France in style. The German had been out of sorts in sprints so far during the Tour, managing one sixthplaced finish on the fourth stage while compatriot Marcel Kittel dazzled, winning three of the opening four stages. “There were two sprints where I couldn’t compete for different reasons but today I was really motivated and focused to have a good position for the sprint. I’m really happy the pressure’s off for the stage win,” said the 31-year-old, who took his total tally to six Tour stage wins. His victory ahead of Norway’s Alexander Kristoff was the fourth by German riders in six stages of this year’s Tour. Maintaining world-class biosecurity was ranked as the number one priority by industry leaders for the fourth consecutive year, followed by food safety as the next most critical issue. New Zealand has a high standard of controls in place but the threat is always present due to very open borders for harmful bio-hazards to enter the country. A serious biosecurity incursion, such as Queensland fruit fly discoveries in Whangarei, has the potential to cause crippling damage. During the Agribusiness Agenda round table discussions it was apparent that most industry sectors have now accepted the need to enter into a Government Industry Agreement (GIA) in order to better manage the risks to the primary sector. However a pan-sector vision and strategy still remains elusive.

Agri-business leaders have one eye on the election he primary sector continues to dominate our exports and be the major source of wealth for Mid Canterbury. So it is not surprising that the sector has one eye on the upcoming elections and how the result may impact on the industry. Any change in Government brings with it a level of uncertainty as a new administration implements its flavour of policy. In recent decades, the approach to key areas of primary sector policy, such as promoting exports, market access, biosecurity, food safety and core science funding, has been broadly consistent, regardless of the party controlling the Treasury benches. The recent KPMG Agribusiness Agenda 2014 highlighted that sector leaders are wary of the loss of the traditional political consensus favoring free trade agreements if there’s a change of Government. They are equally fearful that a new government will introduce tighter regulations against environmental harm and will start charging farmers to use water and other natural capital. There is no dispute around the fact that the primary sector

chief executive, Theo Spierings, said. “Farming hubs are a key part of our strategy to be a more integrated dairy business in Greater China, contribute to the growth and development of the local Chinese dairy industry and help meet local consumers’ needs for safe, nutritious dairy products,” he said. The herd for the new hub would comprise animals either imported, or sourced from Fonterra’s existing farm hubs. All dairy cattle will have genetics traceable to New Zealand, Australia, the United States or Europe, Fonterra said. Fonterra is the world’s largest global milk processor and dairy exporter. Pending regulatory approval, the first farm is expected to be completed and producing milk in the first half of 2017. The remaining farms will start production in 2018. - APNZ

Fonterra’s alliance with the American pharmaceuticals and health care giant, Abbott, would allow the co-operative to accelerate its expansion in China and to bring closer its stated goal of producing one billion litres of milk a year there, chief financial officer Lukas Paravicini said. The partners said yesterday that they would invest a combined $342 million to develop a dairy farm hub in China comprising up to five dairy farms and more than 16,000 dairy milking cattle, producing up to 160 million litres of milk a year. Abbott is a world leader in the infant formula market and already has a significant presence in China. Paravicini said the deal would combine Fonterra’s farming experience in China with Abbott’s expertise on the nutritionals side. “It allows us to speed up our

Ideal time to fix ECan Stu Oldham

political promise to restore Environment Canterbury elections is easily trumpeted as a chance at true democracy for an organisation pivotal to the fortunes of Mid Canterbury. But after nearly four years of traction on water management and resource consents it could just as easily be argued that change will be a blow to sustained managed development. ECan has been governed by Government-appointed commissioners since 2010. It was due to return to elections in 2013 but, in 2012, it was extended to 2016. The Labour Party says, if elected, it will open the door to elections as soon as 2015. The Greens have made a similar pledge. The National Party says it will consult voters before making further decisions on the governance of the council. A return to elections is far from ruled out. It seems strange to debate the merits of an elected council in one of the most democratic countries in the world. However, we must have this debate if the return to elections is to work. Organisations that govern how we live should be made up of representatives of the governed. They should also be accountable to the people they serve. Elections allow both to happen. However, elections have a direct effect on the makeup of the governors and on the decisions they make during the term and before an election. Consider the duly-elected regional council of 2010. It was sacked by the Government for painfully slow progress dealing with water management and resource consent issues. This was a blow to democracy, for sure, but it has proven a circuit-breaking boon for expediency and getting things done. Water planning has been an unexpected source of grassroots democracy, with zonal committees allowing the affected to get involved. This could equally have happened under an elected council but, as we consider the merits of an earlier-than-expected elected future, we have to remember it did not. Elections were suspended to get ECan working. If change is coming, then whoever is in Government must make sure it does not take the council back to 2010.

Big things a small town thing L

et’s face it – anyone who claims ‘size doesn’t matter’ has never been on a tour of New Zealand’s small towns or taken the time to appreciate the presence that a 10m high fish can bestow on the gateway to a district. New Zealand has a penchant for oversize sculptures; there is even a Wikipedia page dedicated ever so eloquently to New Zealand’s Big Things. This week’s unveiling of the new NZ Post stamp collection confirms this obsession, with said sculptures taking pride of place in the Legendary Landmarks collection. Mid Canterbury has not been forgotten, as the Rakaia Salmon enjoys pride of place on an 80c stamp. The salmon is indeed a well-known symbol of Rakaia – perhaps the most well known, even. Forget any other logistical claims to fame (longest bridge, anyone?) – the fish is photogenic, and in an age governed by the law of ‘pics or it didn’t happen,’ posing is paramount. As far as giant sculptures go, a jumping salmon is actually a pretty good choice of subject; it’s difficult to imbue a statue of a carrot or a gumboot with dynamic energy. A fish in motion, however, makes for hilarious holiday snapshots as everyone piles out of the car

Yet staying safe and protected is not an option for us either. One solution to this dilemma is to prepare for the ‘open seas of life’ by being sure of what we know; being sure of what God tells us. Yet, the uncertainty produced by having periods of our lives apparently feeling far from God can be quite disturbing and we might ask “Where is God; and why is he so silent when I need

him? The book of Jeremiah chapter 15 tells us that, “Your help is as uncertain as a seasonal mountain brook—sometimes a flood, sometimes as dry as a bone.” (LB) Well! That’s not much help at all! But actually it may be. Just think of how many times you have driven over the Rakaia Bridge and looked at the river. One day it is a raging torrent; another it is only several braids of trickle. But it has never totally dried up. So it is with our experience of God. Sometimes he fills our lives, other days less so, and at uncertain times his presence feels like a mere trickle. Uncertainty - even believers suffer from it few months ago I was preparing for a monthly church event, where we worship together and explore a challenging topic in interesting ways. Some are less familiar topics and it takes courage to tackle them head-on. In March we looked at Uncertainty; not to be mistaken for Doubt, which is rather different. Uncertainty is one of those things that people who do believe suffer from; we are not always rock-solid certain about everything in our Christian faith. We found that people in ordinary work, social or home situations find it easy to express all sorts of uncertainties of life, big or small; even if it is just being unsure what to cook for tea tonight! In fact, large sculptures in small towns are so ubiquitous here that I can actually trace my heritage by them: mum and dad met in the vicinity of the L&P bottle in Paeroa, and grandad’s clan are from the vicinity of the Cromwell peach. They permeate the geography of my childhood too; there is Tirau, where the giant sheep and sheep dog combination (aka the information centre) was a favourite stop, while my sisters and I used to talk about the time we went to the town with the big kumara (more commonly referred to as Dargaville). Since moving down south, the trend has continued. Road trips have been punctuated with stops to admire giant horses, donuts, and of course the nemesis of the Rakaia salmon, the trout of Gore. President Barack Obama learned this lesson the hard way on Thursday when he stepped into the meat-lovers paradise in Austin. The line for food at the restaurant can sometimes be two or three hours. But the president - exercising the prerogatives of his office - apologetically jumped the queue. He did however offer to shout lunch for the family next to him at the counter - then got a shock. “Hold on, how many folks are y’all feedin’?” the president quipped as Bruce Finstad of Houston and his daughter Faith, from Austin, taking advantage of their luck, ordered three pounds of beef, two pounds of ribs, a half pound of sausage and a half pound of turkey for their family. A bill that came to more than $US300 ($NZ340), and included lunch for Obama’s staff, proved too much for the stash of $US20 bills the president pulled sheepishly from his pocket. So Obama settled the cheque with his credit card before making off with his smokey haul. The restaurant ran a poll asking whether Obama should have cut the line. Downgraded typhoon brushes past Fukushima Tropical storm Neoguri has skirted past the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant on Japan’s east coast and blown out to sea, leaving behind it a trail of destruction and several people dead. The storm was downgraded from a typhoon after sweeping past Tokyo earlier yesterday, where it failed to disrupt the morning rush-hour, but was still packing winds of up 83 kilometres an hour and bringing heavy rain. Workers at Fukushima had been scrambling to insulate the

plant from any storm damage, but Neoguri appeared to have little impact on the site as it headed out into the Pacific. “We are not seeing any rainfall or strong winds” near the plant, a local weather agency official said. “The impact of the storm is likely to fade out soon,” he added. Japan’s weather agency had issued strong wind and rain warnings for the Fukushima region but later said the weather was forecast to improve. A spokesman for the plant

Despite stepped-up efforts to curb the practice, the number of animals killed is around 100 higher than at the same point in 2013, a year which saw a record 1004 deaths. Vanuatu ferry sinks Two people are dead and another two are missing after an interisland ferry sank in Vanuatu, with survivors forced to endure more than six hours adrift. The ferry carrying 30 passengers and 13 crew sank in the early hours of the morning as it was sailing from Malekula to the capital Port Vila, Vanuatu Red Cross chief executive Jacqueline De Gaillande said. “The accident happened at 2am this morning and we were aware of it at 8am,” she said yesterday. “By 10am the boat had completely sunk in 240 metres of water. Right now, we have 28 passengers safe and 11 crew. The bodies of two women passengers have been recovered and there is one crew member and one child missing.” De Gaillande said the cause of the accident was unknown but the ferry had capsized before sinking. - AFP

Toll tops 170,000 The death toll in Syria’s threeyear war has eclipsed 170,000 people, one-third of them civilians, a monitoring group says in a new toll. “Ever since the first casualty of the Syrian revolution was registered on March 18, 2011 in Daraa province, the deaths of 171,509 people have been documented,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights in a report released yesterday. Among the dead were 56,495 civilians, including 9092 children, according to the toll, which included casualties documented up to July 8 this year. Another 65,803 were regime troops and pro-regime militiamen, while 46,301 were rebels seeking President Bashar al-Assad’s ouster and members of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group. - AFP

US offers to mediate Israeli warplanes have kept up deadly raids on Gaza but failed to stop Palestinian militants firing rockets across the border, as the United States offered to help negotiate a truce. With the violence growing worse, US President Barack Obama in a phone call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government was willing to broker a ceasefire. Obama said he was concerned the fighting could escalate and “called for all sides to do everything they can to protect the lives of civilians”, the White House said. “The United States remains prepared to facilitate a cessation of hostilities, including a return to the November 2012 ceasefire agreement.” The 2012 deal, brokered by former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and Egypt, ended eight days of Israeli airstrikes on Hamas targets in a previous showdown. Appeals for an immediate truce also came from UN chief Ban Ki-moon at an emergency meeting yesterday of the Security Council, saying a ceasefire was “more urgent than ever”. Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a similar plea in a phone call to Netanyahu, urging an immediate end to the bloodshed and expressing concern over civilian casualties. But Israel appeared bent on dealing a fatal blow to the Islamist movement Hamas, which controls Gaza, with Netanyahu reportedly saying talk of a ceasefire was “not even on the agenda”. The wife of Michael Schumacher believes the former Formula One champion is getting better after emerging from his coma and being moved to a Swiss hospital last month. In her first public comments since Schumacher’s horrific ski accident on December 29, 2013, Corinna Schumacher has told German magazine Neue Post that the improvement in the health of her famous husband is encouraging. “It’s getting better, slowly certainly, but in any case it’s improving,” she said. Michael Schumacher, 47, spent 170 days in hospital in the French city of Grenoble after cracking his skull on a rock while skiing in an Alpine resort. - AFP

Germany expelled the CIA station chief in Berlin over alleged spying by the United States which has refused to break its silence over the escalating row between the Western allies. The expulsion yesterday came after two suspected US spy cases were uncovered in less than a week in Germany, where anger still simmers over the NSA surveillance scandal sparked by revelations from fugitive intelligence contractor Edward Snowden. “The representative of the US intelligence services at the

embassy of the United States of America has been told to leave Germany,” German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said. The step was highly unusual among NATO allies and underlined Berlin’s anger. The official request to leave was based on two probes by German prosecutors of suspected US spying “as well as outstanding questions over the last several months about the activities of the US secret services in Germany”, said Seibert. “The government takes these

developments very seriously,” he added amid the worst Berlin-Washington falling-out since the 2003 US invasion of Iraq. But in contrast with the uproar in Berlin, Washington responded coolly, demurring when asked to comment on the expulsion, and choosing to instead stress the value of its relationship with Germany. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that any “comment on any reported intelligence acts would put at risk US assets, US personnel and United

States national security”. He said contacts with Berlin on the issue were taking place through diplomatic, intelligence and law enforcement channels. News site Spiegel Online called the expulsion a “diplomatic earthquake”. There are few precedents for such dramatic measures between NATO members.
