Allenton needs new businesses By Sue NewmaN

Tinwald’s shopping centre is buzzing, Netherby’s is busy, but in Allenton there are as many closed shops as open. Statistics show the western suburb is Ashburton’s fastest growing and has the most pricey homes, but its shopping centre, once the town’s most thriving, is now often deserted. And one of its major landlords, John McDonald, is keen for that to change. He owns a block of four shops on the northern side of the shopping centre, two of those are empty – the fish and chip shop and the bar and restaurant. A third has its street frontage closed, with Allenton Meats now running only its processing business at the rear of the premises. The retail shop is closed. Three vacant shop fronts in a row bookended by the Four Square Store and garage at one end and a hairdresser and secondhand store at the other. It’s not a good look, McDonald said. He’s scratching his head about ways to bring back business into the area. He believes that getting the bar and restaurant up and running is key, but he knows a new formula is needed to ensure that business is a success. “We’ve lost our oomph up here, but it hasn’t happened overnight,” he said. The reasons for lost business and lost foot traffic are many and complex, including the trafficslowing measures installed several years ago by the Ashburton District Council. They’re a deterrent for motorists, many of whom avoid driving through the shopping area now rather than navigate three road humps, he said. When the medical centre moved, a large slice of foot traffic went with it and, with the restaurant and bar closed, the evening life drained out of the area, he said. “A lot of those things are beyond our control but we have to get this area back and operational again.” McDonald sees the restaurant and bar as key to kickstarting business growth in the suburb. But to do the job, it needs a new formula,

a very different approach. He has ideas, but needs the right tenant to make them happen, he said. “Look at this area and all the housing development. This has to be turned around. It doesn’t look good from the street with three blank street fronts. The bar has to open again, it’s the centrepiece of the shopping centre.” While he’s still in business, Allenton Meats owner Paddy Kennedy said low foot traffic had convinced him to close his retail shop and focus on the processing side. It wasn’t a decision he made lightly. “I’ve asked myself 101 questions, tried 101 different business
models and seeing shops that are empty is not good. We need to get life back into this area,” he said. Kennedy has been in business in Allenton for 19 years. He recalls a time when there was almost a line-up of businesses looking for retail space in the shopping centre. It’s a vicious circle, foot traffic falls, businesses close and foot traffic falls further, he said. “When the doctors moved out of the mall, unfortunately that took a lot of foot traffic away, but there are heaps of factors. Is it fixable? Yes I honestly believe it is. I’m pretty passionate about the shopping centre.”

The unfortunate thing about any shop closure was that when one closed it always affected the others, Kennedy said. Retired retailer Brent MacGregor has seen the Allenton Shopping Centre at its best and at its worst. Last time it had several vacant shops it recovered – slowly, he said, and he believes it will do so again. “Losing the doctors and the post office certainly hurt. It’s been a lot of small things over a period of time, but Allenton, of all the shopping centres, should be thriving. “It’d be nice to see more businesses that would generate foot
traffic, but I don’t think it’ll be an easy fix,” he said. After the retail slump of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the recovery was slow, but it came, MacGregor said. He also sees the reopening of the shopping centre bar as key to the area’s revival – it’s the gathering point – and he sees Allenton as a centre that has the potential to be a place of niche retail, a place where one-off shops create their own retail community. On the southern side of the shopping centre there are also empty shops and several buildings have for-sale signs in their windows.

The theft of more than 10 mailboxes from rural Ashburton near the Tinwald Golf Course has left people frustrated at the pointless nature of the crime. The theft of eight or nine mailboxes was reported to police on Thursday, senior sergeant Matt Emery said. “Late afternoon (Thursday) they were located by a member of the public and we started working on matching up and delivering them back to the people who had reported them missing,” he said. “The only thing we were unable to return was a Fonterra sign that would go on a gate.” Emery said at the moment they had no suspects, but they would be keen to hear from people if they have any information. “If anyone happens to be out and ... see something, never hesitate to contact us,” he said. One of the people affected by the thefts was Danielle Bosch, who woke up on her birthday to find her mailbox gone. “It’s just a bit silly really,” she said. “We live on a dairy farm and there are other houses owned by the dairy farm and there were four taken.” When police returned the signs, they said a total of 12-15 had been found, some of which had been beaten up, Bosch said. Swedish furniture giant Ikea has confirmed it will bring a megastore to New Zealand with 7000 products and a restaurant. The company said that megastore will be in Auckland, though hasn’t specified where or when it will be built. It will also launch an online shop giving consumers direct access to 7000 products from the global brand’s home furnishing catalogue for the first time. Ikea boss Jesper Brodin confirmed plans for a second store in the South Island in coming years and Selwyn District councillor Craig Watson believes it should be in Rolleston. “It just makes complete sense to have Ikea open their second store here in Selwyn in the industrial area – the IZone/IPort area,” Watson said. “We have two inland container terminals covering both the Port of Timaru and Port of Lyttelton, and as Ikea is 98 per cent all imports this reduces time and cost of shipping and, of course, the environment impact from shipping.” Brodin has recently placed
enormous emphasis on Ikea’s online delivery model, which it is looking to scale across numerous countries. He has said the company was interested in launching smaller-format stores that offered same-day delivery. Watson said with “the land, the infrastructure and an excited population” it would provide a perfect central location in the South Island. “When the CSM2 (Christchurch Southern Motorway stage 2) opens, getting to Ikea would be easier for half of Christchurch than getting to the other side of town. “The same goes for the Wakimak and Ashburton. “We are talking about easy access – less than one hour – for almost half a million people, it really is a no-brainer. “Servicing the Ashburton, Waimakariri, Christchurch people, and even those from further south and north. “Having lived in Canberra for a number of years I went to Sydney and totally enjoyed the Ikea experience, show me the meatballs,” Watson said.

Time is running out for Cheryl Mockford; she has just 20 days to find a new and permanent base for her giveaway store. For eight months she’s been taking the goods and clothing other people don’t want and giving them away from her Tinwald home, but she’s been given notice by the Ashburton District Council that the giveaway shop must close by the end of the month. She’s adamant she won’t be closing, but unless she can find an alternative premise, Mockford has just one choice – come up with $1000, apply for a resource consent and get the consent of her neighbours. That’s a step she won’t be taking. Instead she’s desperately looking for a building where she can leave her service permanently set up, a building that will come rent free with power thrown in. “I can’t afford to pay rent or power, but whatever happens, I’m not stopping, the community needs this,” she said. The degree of need is demonstrated in the steady stream of people walking up her drive, sorting through boxes, bags and display tables and walking out with clothing and household goods, a smile on their faces. Support for the free store is shown in a petition – 265 signatures and growing. Yesterday Mockford invited mayor Donna Favel into her home, hoping she might convince the council that her

A bad bit of road, a piece of broken glass and your scooter can spring a flat tyre and you’re left stranded, waiting for a taxi ride home, he said.
Search called off The search for a man who is missing in the water at the popular Whangarei Falls has been suspended for the night. The swimmer has not been located and the search will resume this morning with the Police Dive Squad. Whangarei Falls will be closed until the search operation is complete. Scene guards were in place overnight. Emergency services were alerted about 4.50pm after the man was seen looking distressed in the water. In a statement, police said the man went under water while swimming and failed to surface. - NZME

While she could not bend the council’s rules, Favel said she wanted to help Mockford find a good outcome for her, the people she was helping and for the council. “But we can’t just bend the rules, We have a rule book with the district plan and council staff have to use this.” Mockford might say she was providing a community service, rather than running a business, but any resident had a right to make a complaint to the council
about any issue in the community. If a complaint was made then the council had to investigate. In this case the investigation found that a community service that operated three days of the week had no place in a residential area, Favel said. If it came down the definition of what was and was not a business, then that was a legal question, she said. “No one is saying we want to stop the shop. I think the work you’re doing is great, but we need to find a way forward, a way where you can do this and
not break the rules.” Mockford said she had asked council staff to find her a vacant council owned building for her store but it appeared none were available. “I basically refuse to close so what are you going to do, fine me? I can’t pay it and that will put me in a position where I’ll have no option but to shut. Your community is saying they want this, they don’t want it to close and they’re angry,” Mockford said. “I know the poverty that’s out there. I see what some families are going without.”

He was delighted last week to find that someone else shared his concern. “I was going across the bridge when I saw this joker. “He was standing with a
broom so I asked him what he was doing. “He said he was going past on his pushbike and saw all the bits of glass so he went back and got his broom and he was sweeping the bridge,” Allan said. He was impressed. The town needs more people like this chap, he said. “He was a good community minded man.”
The man’s actions got Allan thinking. Keeping the streets clean and tidy could be something that’s handed out as a job for people who are sentenced to community service, he said. “The council should be able to use these jokers to do the likes of sweeping the bridge and cleaning up Baring Square or weeding the gardens.”
The police Armed Offenders Squad has raided a property in the West Auckland suburb of Swanson yesterday, with reports of helicopters and dog units at the scene. Police confirmed they were conducting a “search warrant” along Christian Road, Swanson, around 4pm yesterday. At 6.10pm, police confirmed they had cleared a property along Christian Road. Police said the Armed Offenders Squad was in attendance as a “precaution”. One neighbouring resident said they saw people being escorted out of the property by police in handcuffs. - NZME
Injury inquiry Police in South Auckland have launched an investigation after a 10-week-old child was critically injured in Papakura. The child was injured earlier this week. Police said they were notified by medical staff about lunchtime on Tuesday but would not provide details about the baby’s injuries due to privacy reasons. The baby boy suffered serious injuries and is in a critical condition at Starship Children’s Hospital. - NZME
Eight injured in crash Eight people have been injured in a horror crash between two vans in South Auckland. Police said four of those injured are children, aged between 6 and 13. One child was sent to Auckland’s Starship Hospital via helicopter in a critical condition. Another patient, in a serious condition, was also taken to Starship via helicopter. Two other children are in a moderate condition. Four adults are also being treated for moderate injuries. - NZME

Doctors announce second strike Junior doctors employed by district health boards have announced they will strike for a second two-day period this month. The industrial action is set to disrupt treatment for non-urgent patients, with scores of specialist appointments and elective surgeries now being rescheduled. The NZ Resident Doctors’ Association (NZRA) yesterday released plans to strike between January 29 and 30. It comes a day after the group confirmed that a 48-hour period strike would take place next week starting at 7am on Tuesday until 7am on Thursday; after mediation with DHBs failed to come up with anything they agreed on. The association claims DHBs are pursuing claw backs in terms and provisions of the Multi-Employer Collective Agreement. NZRA said the DHB team’s claw backs would remove the protection of the union and expose vulnerable junior doctors to disruptive and dangerous work conditions. The association’s senior advocate, David Munro, said: “The [residential medical officers] are more determined than ever not to accept claw backs to their terms and conditions. “This vote for a second strike testifies to their resolve. The RMOs are clearly not going to be backing down.” NZRA said the DHB team’s position meant junior doctors could be moved to any hospital in the country as district health boards see fit and required to work more than 16 hours in a row without guarantee of rest or safety. Vice-president Dr Kathryn Foster said it had been a long process, bargaining with the DHBs since February last year. Foster said they did not expect the conditions eventually presented to them – which sought general

changes to the way they worked and changes they felt would be disruptive and potentially detrimental to many RMO doctors. “We entered into that process to try and re-negotiate with the DHBs to get something that would be acceptable to our members, with improvements to the conditions. “But unfortunately, all we’ve been offered is claw backs in terms of our terms and conditions of employment – which has been a real shame, actually.” However, the DHB group said they “strongly dispute” claims made by the union about bargaining discussions related to the collective agreement for junior doctors. DHB spokesman Dr Peter Bramley said it was untrue for the union to say they wanted to move junior doctors around the country at will. “Rosters across multiple hospitals in non-urban areas and any combined duty and on-call period of more than 16 consecutive hours currently requires the approval of the RDA.” He said DHBs would prefer affected employees make decisions about rosters locally, rather than the union. “DHBs are committed to being good employers supporting safe care and safe working conditions,” he said. Hospitals and medical clinics – and patients, as a result – will be affected some way or another because of the strikes. Contingency plans will be put in place to help keep things running smoothly. However, hospitals are urging people to keep the emergency department free for genuine emergencies and to seek treatment from a GP or an accidental and medical clinic if injuries or illnesses are less serious. - NZME

Couple scramble on to roof after SUV drives into water and sinks Two people were forced to scramble on to the roof of their SUV yesterday after it was accidentally driven into the sea and sank near Auckland Harbour Bridge. The black BMW SUV bobbed in the water then floated, submerged up to its windows, before disappearing beneath the surface. The incident happened about 1.45pm when the vehicle careered off the edge of a car park at a public reserve in Northcote Point. No one was injured in the incident at Sulphur Beach Reserve, which is believed to have happened when the driver acci-
dentally missed the brake pedal. The vehicle was later pulled back towards to shore with a rope that had been attached by a diver. The car park at the reserve has no railing preventing cars from driving off the edge. A witness who did not wish to be named said he was asleep in his house truck when he heard a scraping sound. “I looked out my window and I could see the car teetering on the edge of the sea wall here,” he said. “There were two people in the front and I yelled, ‘don’t move’.” “The car was rocking, stopping, rocking, stopping.”
The man said he told the couple in the car he would drive his van closer and secure a rope to their car to stop them going over the edge. But before he could get his van into place, the car was already in “the drink”. The car then floated off with the wind taking it out to sea towards moored yachts. The couple scrambled out their windows and on to the roof before the man called to them to swim to shore before it sank. “So they ran across the roof, jumped in the water and swam to shore where they climbed up the sea wall.” - NZME

Police try to curb reckless Lime scooter behaviour The use of Lime scooters in Dunedin’s Baldwin St is already under scrutiny as the company and police try to curb reckless behaviour on the street. Police were seen periodically visiting the steep street yesterday, and Lime has made it a non-service zone due to it being a “high risk area”. One person has already been filmed riding down the steepest street in the world, and a Lime spokeswoman said the company strongly discouraged anyone from copying him. “We are relieved to see the rider did not harm himself or anyone else on his journey down Baldwin Street. “We would hate to see any of our riders injure themselves or others due to taking risks like this.” Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said police had been periodically checking the street just to make sure people were using their common sense.
It was up to individuals and the company to make sure the scooters were being used as intended and police would intervene when necessary, Dinnissen said. Lime e-scooters hadn’t even been in Dunedin for one day before someone attempted to ride one down the world’s steepest street. Footage of the attempt shows the young man slowly but steadily creep his way down the street, falling off for a short moment before getting back on the scooter. He had to evade other members of the public walking up the tourist hotspot but made it down in one piece. Earlier yesterday a fleet of 300 e-scooters launched in the southern city. Many locals took the opportunity to ride them, including businessmen in suits. The young man joins a number of daredevils who have pulled off special feats on the
steep slope of Baldwin St. In 2017, New Zealand mountain biker Wyn Masters was filmed performing various wheelies down the famous street while onlookers cheered him on. In 2010, motorcycle stuntman Ian Soanes wheelied his way down Baldwin St in front of a crowd numbering around 3000. However, Baldwin St is not to be underestimated. In 2001 student Ana North, 19, lost her life after sliding down the street in a wheelie-bin. She died instantly when the wheelie-bin she and a friend were in smashed into a parked trailer around 2.30am. The friend, Lindsay Peter Roxburgh, originally from Pukekohe, was taken to Dunedin Hospital with serious head injuries. Baldwin St is the steepest public street in the world – with a 38-degree gradient it is featured in the Guinness Book of Records, and is a tourist attraction. - NZME

tries working their way into the inbox as holidaymakers return from their journeys and start to work their way through their phones and cameras. With two separate competitions, one for sharp-shooters under the age of 18 and another for those over 18, there are great
prizes to be won across both and the word is going out for anyone who thinks they may have captured a summer fun moment to send their entries in to be in with a chance to win. Entries are open until Friday, February 1 so there’s still plenty of time left to get involved.

elen Wallis knew she wanted to be a minister when she was a child, but she also knew that, at that time, it wasn’t a role where women were welcome. “I was about 12 and I was peeling apples with my mother one day when I said that – ‘if I was a boy, I think that God would want me to be a minister’. Her mother replied: “Well you are not a boy, so you can’t be a minister, carry on peeling those apples.” Helen was well into her first career as a nurse before she responded to a sense of call that had been quietly growing, but answering that call came with plenty of challenges. “I guess I’d always felt a sense of calling, a connection. It was quietly developing over the years. Circumstances push you to develop and find the reality of your faith in everyday life,” she said. She has the unusual distinction of having been ordained in both the Anglican and the Presbyterian churches. As a young person, she had worshipped in both, but although distinctly an Anglican, after years working as a public health nurse, she was accepted to

hristian never retires When the Reverend Helen Wallis trained to become a minister, she didn’t think she was about breaking new ground for women, she was simply answering a “call” from God. This year Helen celebrated the 40th anniversary of her ordination. She might be officially retired, but she’s still working in a role that is very much a part of who she is. She talks to reporter Sue Newman about her commitment to the Christian faith and practice that is life-long.
train at the Knox Theological Hall and the University of Otago in Dunedin with the hope of becoming a Presbyterian minister. “At that time there was still much debate in the Anglican Church about women becoming priests, but I didn’t realise that such discriminatory division was still very apparent and divisive in the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand,” she said. This became very clear on the evening of her ordination, when, as she entered the church, she discovered that the Presbytery Moderator had not come to ordain her even though it was against the rules of the church to withdraw from such responsibility. The Immediate Past Moderator, however, stepped in to officiate at the Ordination Ceremony in November, 1978, when she was also appointed to her first parish of Lawrence-Waitahuna. There was plenty of controversy around the appointment, but Helen said the parish was largely very supportive. While she was raised an Anglican, becoming a Presbyterian minister did not involve a change in belief, it was more about governance and she found the less formal style of worship in the Presbyterian Church sat easily with her own formal but creative style. Time in a large rural parish allowed her to
gain the confidence to step into big city work and seven years later she was called to join Christchurch Hospital’s Ecumenical Chaplaincy Service, a position she loved. “It was really challenging. I was also the Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery for part of that time and I was really busy. I guess I eventually got burned out and realised I needed to stop before it all turned to custard.” And that meant a return to parish work. A call from the Southland Presbytery provided the answer she’d been looking for and Helen took up the minister’s position for the Drummond-Oreti Presbyterian Parish for the next six years. A stint as the hospital chaplain in Timaru followed before the challenge to provide ‘interim ministries’. One of those interim ministry positions came as an invitation for an appointment to the St David’s Union Parish in Allenton. “John and I decided to consider the position and visited one Sunday to see what God had in store,” she said. They liked what they saw, came in 2001 and ended up staying for 15 months. Over the past 16 years, Helen and John have responded to the need for interim ministries around much of the central and lower South Island in parishes facing either long vacancies or particular challenges. After the Canterbury
earthquakes and at the invitation of Bishop Victoria Matthews, Helen was appointed as priestin-charge of the Oxford-Cust Anglican Parish. There were many challenges in this new parish for her as a newly-ordained Anglican priest where five experienced retired ministers also lived. “It was a little like preaching in the Vatican,” she said. Originally Helen and John retired to a lifestyle block in Milton but “awful weather” and particular health needs changed their minds. They moved back to Ashburton at the end of 2017, but permanent retirement was short-lived. Soon after arriving, Helen was appointed to another interim role as the Minister for St Paul’s and St James’ Presbyterian parishes as they worked through the processes to vote and amalgamate. An entirely new parish will be established at a special presbytery-wide service to be held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on the afternoon of February 10. On February 1 Helen will take up another part-time relieving position, as the priest-in-charge of the Rakaia Anglican Parish, including the districts of Dorie, Chertsey, Rakaia and Barrhill. For her, being a minister is about making God, the church and the Christian faith real and meaningful for people in everyday life. Involvement in the social agency side of a parish is also a key to making church relevant, she said.
“There are increasing numbers of good examples where this is happening. Investing time in real community activities that meet the needs of the people there, is the style of church we need to develop.” She believes that churches in the future must, and can, continue to change in order to meet the needs of a changing world to do what it has always done, responded to meet the needs of its community and its people. “Many people are so focused on the dollar and it is a world where people are under increasing pressure of the present-day consumeristic society of wanting to have everything in the now and that is one of the biggest threats to the place of the worshipping community – the church,” she said. Helen is a strong believer in the importance of regular gatherings in some form of fellowship and worship for all people who claim to be Christians. “To have a religious affiliation, but never go to worship God in with other Christians, is a bit like saying you belong to a golf club but never play and never pay a subscription, but want to retain full privileges and voting rights.” As one of the early women ministers, Helen says she does not consider
herself a ground-breaker. “It’s just been about getting on with it. I was simply responding to a call from God.” The first woman was ordained in the Presbyterian church in 1969, but in the Anglican church women worked as deaconesses for many more years, before the Canon Law of the world-wide Anglican communion changed and allowed women in some countries, first of all to be made deacons and later to be ordained as priests. “Those first ordinands were the women who really broke new ground,” she said. “Yes, I was at the cusp of change, where you followed the same path of training as the men, three years at Knox Theological Hall – though I was never allowed in the dining room. Gender discrimination was still rife amongst those young men.” As she was called to uproot home and move on, Helen said husband John had always been incredibly supportive. They met in her first parish of Lawrence-Waitahuna and she said that the budding romance was a bit like “courting in a goldfish bowl”. While she may be officially retired, Helen said there is no retirement for Christians. “The call to serve continues. Time or circumstance might force one to hang up one’s harp as a clergyperson, but the walk of faith continues for life. “The good thing though, when I retire, I don’t walk away from my calling, I still live by faith. “I’ll always be an Anglican priest, but I’ve never negated my Presbyterian vows. I’m licensed to both denominations,” she said.

In brief Missing girl found A 13-year-old northwest Wisconsin girl who went missing in October after her parents were killed has been found alive, authorities said. The Barron County Sheriff ’s Department said on its Facebook page that Jayme Closs has been located and that a suspect was taken into custody. Jayme Closs has been missing since her parents, James and Denise Closs, were found shot to death October 15 at the family’s home near Barron. Investigators said Jayme was quickly ruled out as a suspect. - AP

Trump eyes wall options The White House has begun laying the groundwork for a declaration of national emergency to build President Donald Trump’s border wall, including searching for unused money in the Army Corps of Engineers budget, two people with knowledge of the preparations said yesterday. Such a declaration would be certain to set off a firestorm of opposition and would undoubtedly be challenged in court, lawmakers of both parties said. But with the partial government shutdown nearing its third week, a national emer-
gency declaration could be a way out of the impasse. It could allow Trump to cite action on his long-promised Mexico border wall even without Congress granting his funding demands – and potentially pave the way for the government to reopen. Trump has urged the Army Corps to determine how fast contracts could be signed and whether construction could begin within 45 days, according to one of the people with knowledge of the preparations, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe them. The administration is specifically eyeing a disaster-spending
bill passed by Congress last year that includes $13.9 billion in funding that has been allocated but not actually spent for a variety of civil works projects, according to the second person, a congressional aide who also requested anonymity. The preparations are taking place with talks at an impasse over Trump’s demands for $5.7 billion to construct more than 200 miles of wall along the US-Mexico border. Democrats are staunchly opposed, leading to a partial government shutdown. Trump reiterated yesterday that he may declare a national
emergency if Democrats don’t give him what he wants. “We can declare a national emergency. We shouldn’t have to, because this is common sense,” Trump told reporters as he visited the border in Texas. When asked about a timetable for such a declaration, the president said he would see how it goes with Congress. But on Capitol Hill, there were no signs of progress and lawmakers of both major parties were bracing for Trump to declare a national emergency. ‘Missing’ boy found in attic crawl space A 6-year-old boy who was reported missing by his father in August has been found safe, hidden in an attic crawl space in the southwest Missouri home of his mother and her boyfriend, authorities said. Braedence Jones was found in the crawl space with his mother, Aubrey Ferguson, at a home south of Camdenton in rural LaClede County, the Camden County Sheriff’s Department said. A gunman sentenced to 195 years in prison for an attack on a police station apologised to the parents of an undercover narcotics detective who was mistakenly shot and killed by a fellow officer during the ambush. Before a judge sentenced him, Michael Ford said he didn’t intend to harm anybody but himself when he opened fire on a Prince George’s County police station in March 2016. In November, a jury convicted Ford, 25, of second-degree murder in the killing of Detective Jacai Colson even though he didn’t fire the shot that killed the four-year veteran of the county’s police department. “That man does not deserve to be dead. The house next door where Ferguson’s parents live also was empty. Jones said Ferguson told him in text messages that the boy was safe but would not say where she was, according to the affidavit. guson turned off her phone between texts so she could not receive calls. Since then, law enforcement officials received several tips both in the region and out of state, Page said. Surveillance footage from stores confirmed the boy was with his mother and pings from her phone indicated they were moving around to elude capture, she said. Ferguson, and her boyfriend, Woodrow Ziegler, were arrested. Charges are being pursued in Laclede and possibly Camden counties, Page said. - AP

‘I watched JonBenet die’ It’s the unsolved murder that has gripped the world for 22 years. Who killed JonBenet Ramsey? Now we may be one step closer to finding out, after a longtime suspect in the case has reportedly confessed to killing the six-year-old beauty pageant princess, who was found dead in her basement on December 26, 1996. Letters written by convicted paedophile Gary Oliva in jail have been obtained by theDaily Mail, and they reportedly claim the 54-year-old is taking full responsibility for the crime, saying he killed her by accident. “I never loved anyone like I did JonBenet and yet I let her slip and her head bashed in half and I watched her die,” he allegedly wrote. “It was an accident. Please believe me. She was not like the other kids.” The child sex offender, who is serving time in a Colorado prison for child porn charges, reportedly goes on to explain how much she “changed” him in a second letter – revealing her death induced remorse in him. “JonBenet completely changed me and removed all evil from me,” Oliva claimed. “Just one look at her beautiful face, her glowing beautiful skin, and her divine Godbody, I realised I was wrong to kill other kids. Yet by accident she died and it was my fault.” The sensational letters were sent to music publicist Michael Vail, a former school mate of Oliva’s, who has reportedly suspected his in-
Grohl falls off stage Dave Grohl normally performs in stadiums, but he got a little flummoxed while playing a much smaller gig than he’s used to. The Foo Fighters front man was performing a corporate gig for the Consumer Electronics Show at The Joint in Las Vegas when he had a minor accident. As Spin reported, Grohl was passed a can of beer by a fan during a guitar solo, which he downed, and then fell off the stage. It happened during the first Foo Fighters show of 2019. Grohl has a history of falling off stage after breaking his leg during a gig in Sweden in 2015.

However in 2013, ABC News reported a grand jury believed there was enough evidence in 1999 to indict John and Patsy Ramsey on charges relating to the unsolved killing of the young beauty queen. In 2016, a documentary called The Case of JonBenet Ramsey aired ahead of the
20th anniversary of JonBenet’s death, which ultimately accused Burke – who was nine at the time – of bludgeoning his sister to death. As a result, Burke launched a $US750 million ($1.105 billion) defamation lawsuit against American TV network CBS which was settled at the start of this year, according to the New York Post. - AP

Gunmen kill four volunteer school guards Gunmen disguised as state security personnel fatally shot four paramilitary volunteers guarding a school in insurgency-wracked southern Thailand, police said. The attackers approached the armed territorial defence volunteers at the school in Pattani province and shot them dead shortly before noon Thursday, police Lt. Col. Wicha Nupannoi said. They seized four HK33 assault rifles from their victims before fleeing, scattering nails and other material on the road to delay pursuers, he said. Predominantly Buddhist Thailand’s three southernmost provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat have been plagued by a Muslim separatist insurgency that has claimed the lives of about 7000 people since 2004, according to the research group Deep South Watch, which monitors the region. 500g firm white fish fillets, cut into thin medallions 3T coconut cream Handful fresh coriander leaves, hand torn 2 kaffir lime leaves, finely sliced 1 fresh red chilli, finely sliced ■ Trim the banana leaves and line a steamer base and sides (we use a bamboo steamer) with the leaves ensuring they overlap. ■ To make the curry sauce, place palm sugar and fish sauce in a bowl and mix together until the sugar has dissolved. Add eggs, 1st measure of coconut cream and curry paste and mix to combine. ■ Cover the banana leaves with the basil and layer the seafood on top. Pour the curry sauce over the seafood and place the lid on top. Place the whole steamer on top of a saucepan or wok that is half filled with boiling water. Steam for 20-25 minutes or until the sauce starts to thicken and the seafood is just cooked. Remove from the heat. ■ Drizzle the second measure of coconut cream over the top. Sprinkle with coriander leaves, lime leaves and sliced chilli. Place the steamer on a large plate to stop dribbles and serve. Red curry paste 12 whole red chillis, remove ends,
split in half and scrape seeds out 1t white peppercorns 1t coriander seeds 1/2 t cumin seeds Pinch of mace 1t salt 60g shallots, peeled and roughly chopped 40g fresh garlic, peeled and roughly chopped 2 sticks of fresh lemongrass, finely sliced 1T galangal, roughly chopped 1T fresh coriander roots, finely chopped 1T lime zest 2t shrimp paste, wrap in foil and place in 180°C oven for 5-10 minutes. ■ To make the red curry paste, place the prepared chillis into a bowl and cover with boiling water until they have softened – approximately 5-10 minutes. ■ Place the peppercorns, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, mace and salt into a mortar and grind to a fine powder. ■ Add the remaining ingredients and pound to a smooth paste. It noted that the $831 million of non-residential work approved in November was the second highest on record. “There are no signs of a slowdown in commercial construction, despite weak business confidence levels seen over the year.” New Zealand’s housing shortage – particularly in Auckland – was a key issue in the 2017 election. The Labour-led coalition has pledged to build 100,000 affordable homes over 10 years under its KiwiBuild programme – a target that appears challenging given capacity constraints in the sector. Last April, Westpac estimated that Auckland was short of about 30,000 homes. Yesterday, Westpac chief economist Dominick Stephens said building activity has picked up but will vary regionally depending
on housing stock and population growth. He said the country is now building more than twice as many homes as it was in 2009, while net migration is also falling away. Those forces should move into balance sometime this year. “So we’re now at a point where we’re roughly building enough homes to keep up with population growth,” he said. “But we have to keep building at that rate” to clear the shortfall, he said. Monthly consent numbers are volatile. Historically consents for new homes tended to peak midyear, for summer construction, but the trend to more apartments and the growth of the retirement home sector has increased the variability in the data. A total of 3120 consents were issued for all types of homes in November, up almost 7 per cent from October but down 4.4 per cent from a year earlier. New Zealand councils consented almost 32,800 new dwellings in the year through November, 5.3 per cent more than a year earlier, according to Stats NZ. That growth was driven by a 21 per cent increase in Auckland to 12,800, and a 21 per cent increase in the Wellington region, where 2727 consents for homes, apartments and retirement units were issued during the 12-month period. “Stand-alone houses accounted for nearly two-thirds of new homes consented in the year ended November,” construction statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said. “We saw a sustained increase in apartments, as well as townhouses, flats, and units, particularly in Auckland.” Parts of New Zealand are in a sustained building boom, with economic growth and several years of strong net migration maintaining activity, even as Canterbury’s post-earthquake home construction has slowed. Auckland, Waikato and Wellington have dominated that recent growth, with eight of the country’s 16 regions reporting declines in dwelling consents relative to the November 2017 year. Stats NZ noted that consents in the rest of the North Island fell 8.1 per cent to 5470 in the year through November. Dwelling consents in Canterbury were down 8.8 per cent at 4668, with those in the rest of the South Island down 2.5 per cent at 3418. ASB said that, while consent issuance is down from earlier in 2018, it is likely to remain “relatively elevated” in order to catch-up with pent-up housing demand. “We are encouraged by the strong supply response evident in

After an inordinate amount of hype and years of heart-stopping “Is it coming? Is it not?”, the world’s largest furniture and home furnishings retailer, Ikea, has held a press conference, ostensibly to announce details about the company’s arrival in New Zealand. Around 100 breathless journalists, Ikea supporters and Scandinavian dignitaries arrived at the Cloud in Auckland to be told: there will be meatballs. But not much more. “Without being specific, it’s a dream, but we don’t have a plan yet,” said Jesper Brodin, president and CEO of the Ingka Group, which holds the franchise for Ikea in New Zealand and other parts of the world. “We are at the start of the process. It’s too premature to be specific,” said market potential development manager Will Edwards. So here’s what is known: When: The first Ikea store in New Zealand will be open “within a few years” – more than two, less than 10. Where: The first “iconic” full-service blue and yellow store will be somewhere in Auckland. Precise location still to be decided.

Declining shopping centre a sad sight H
ow do you breathe life back into something that’s ever so gently seemingly taking its last breaths? It’s the million-dollar question and one that owners of buildings in the Allenton shopping precinct would love an answer to as one of the busiest and fastest-growing parts of Ashburton continues to wallow as businesses close their front doors. The New Year has started in the area with another shop-front closed after Allenton Meats have decided to close the retail side of its business and solely operate a processing business from the site.
That follows hot on the heels of the closure of Bedrock Bar and Grill and the fish and chip shop, leaving a huge chunk of aesthetically wasted space. Allenton, of course, isn’t the only retail centre struggling; the centre of town is in a slow rebuilding stage and these issues tend to come in ebbs and flows
– but perhaps it’s the prime opportunity to give Allenton a bit of a shake up and introduce some new blood to the market. And it all seems to centre around the restaurant and ensuring its success with that luck running into those businesses around it. Everyone who has pumped time and money into the restaurant situation there has done a grand job but struggled with the bums on seats philosophy and unfortunately when patronage is the main ingredient to success, without it, things are often grim. Place a heaving restaurant or bar and bistro in there and all of
a sudden the place seems a little more alive. It was always a nice sight to drive past and see a whole heap of people sitting outside enjoying a bit of an unwind from the working day each day – but the barren appearance now is certainly a depressing sight. The issue seems to be that there’s actually too much to choose from in this town when it comes to eating. We have restaurants and venues of the like scattered plentifully around the township and surrounding areas – anyone who wants to head out for a meal is spoilt for choice and as such a
plethora of options means that someone is going to miss out somewhere along the line and a location like Allenton is sadly not probably central enough for most people’s liking. And so, it suffers. A vicious cycle indeed. Who knows what the future really holds for the Allenton Shopping Centre, but as a community and a district we can only but hope for a positive outcome that sees the area return to being a thriving hub of activity at some point in the near future. We need the little hidden gems scattered around the place – and we need them to be successful.

Immigration proposals I
t was an honour to attend the recent immigration announcement alongside Minister of Immigration Iain Lees-Galloway in Ashburton before Christmas last year. I’ve been in constant contact with the Minister during my time as an MP advocating for our employers and their workers. It has been clear, changes need to happen. Over the past year I have heard from various employers from all over the Rangitata electorate telling me that action is needed to simplify the process around Temporary Work Visas. Often times, these employers are stressed and in urgent need of workers, and having to work with current complicated immigration processes. With such low unemployment rates in our region, many employers are crying out for migrant workers, and the Government has been listening. We’ve come up with proposals that will benefit our regions, our businesses, and all workers, from Kiwi citizens to newly-arrived
migrants. It has taken a Labour/NZ First government to take the needs of the regions seriously, and I’ve been working with the minister to get these changes through. Our proposals are designed to help regions get the skilled workers they need, while also ensuring that New Zealanders are the first in line for jobs. They simplify the number of different visa options, respond to sectoral or regional differences in the labour market, and align with education, skills and welfare systems. A core part of the proposals announced is to replace the Essential Skills in Demand Lists with Regional Skills Shortage Lists. Regional lists will expand
from the current 6, to 16. And we are moving quickly. It is our aim to have the new lists in place in April 2019. We are also introducing a new exemption to labour market tests for jobs that are paid twice the median wage. This will help streamline the process for smaller sectors and make it easier and faster for employers across all of New Zealand, regions included, to hire highly skilled migrant workers. We are also proposing to establish sector agreements, initially focused on sectors that have already demonstrated they are facing significant supply issues. The sectors are residential aged care, dairy farming, tourism and hospitality, and road freight and transport. At a meeting held in Timaru earlier this year, that Minister Lees-Galloway attended, we heard from employers across all of these sectors, telling us how desperate they are for workers. I’m sure they will welcome these proposals. We have received fantas-
tic feedback from groups and agencies already, with Federated Farmers, Tourism Industry Aotearoa, Dairy NZ and Council of Trade Unions all welcoming changes to the migrant labour system. Protecting Ashburton’s streets, taking on the world’s best on two wheels and doing battle with some of New Zealand’s best school-age cricketers, Alex Hooper has done it all. For now however, he has his sights set on helping deliver a vital Hawke Cup victory for Mid Canterbury this weekend. Hooper, the ex-high performance cyclist turned police officer is in to his second season of Hawke Cup cricket for Mid Canterbury. Hawke Cup cricket has been somewhat of a sore point for Mid Canterbury in the past few years, but positive pre-season results
have the side confident heading in to their clash with Otago Country today. “The feeling amongst the group now is that if there is going to be a time where we are able to do something it is this year,” he said. “We have a good core of experienced players like Des Kruger and Matt Winter, and we also have some talented young players coming through.” Things have ended up quite similar to his dad Rob for Hooper, who is a Lauriston cricket stalwart and a police officer, but that was never his intention. “I never grew up thinking that I would be a police officer,” he said. “It was just when I left the high performance cycling I decided to
go to Police College, and I ended up back in Ashburton and playing cricket for Lauriston. “I’m definitely just a bowler who can hit the ball, though I have a ton for Lauriston and Rob doesn’t.” Hooper studied at Christchurch Boys’ High School, making his way in to the 1st XI, winning a Gillette Cup along the way. Despite that success, cycling was always the top target. “Cycling was the main focus at school,” he said. “I joined the high-performance programme as a junior riding at 16 and I was involved through to 2015 when I decided to leave. “It was my decision to leave. “I had had enough and you
have to enjoy it and I had lost that passion for it. “I loved my time there, made friends and travelled the world, it was great.” The self-confessed bowler who can hit the ball has recently combined two of his passions, playing in six matches for the New Zealand Police cricket side in Australia. “I saw a poster about it so tried out for the Canterbury team and was selected through there,” he said. “We travelled to Sydney and played six games against all of the state police sides over there. “It was great to play on first class wickets and good outfields, it was about Hawke Cup level but

there were a few ex-state players. “They were a good bunch of guys. They won three and lost three games, with the condensed schedule taking its toll towards the end of the week-long event, said Hooper. Today’s two-day game between Mid Canterbury and Otago Country at the Ashburton Domain oval will start at 10.30am.

Big season for swim team The Ashburton Swim Team has spent the past week in camp in Timaru, preparing for an action-packed start to the 2019 season. The annual camp saw 15 members of the team worked hard each day, starting with a morning run before biking to the 50m outdoor pool they used for sessions twice each day and biking back, with a gym class also thrown in for good measure. By the time the camp wrapped up yesterday, some team members will have swum approximately 60km for the week. It was hard work they hoped would pay off at the Canterbury Championship (for those 13 and over) at Dunedin’s Moana Pool next week, and the Canterbury Junior Championships later in January in Christchurch. After that, attention turns to the New Zealand Junior Festival for those 12 and under in Invercargill, then the National Age Group Championships in Wellington for those aged 13 and over. While the Ashburton swim team was in Timaru, their counterparts from Jellie Park in Christchurch were in Ashburton utilising the Ashburton team’s usual facilities. While the pool complex at the EA Networks Centre was closed to the public for the pools to undergo maintenance, this week’s work did not include the main pool so the Jellie Park team were able to use it for training.
Black eyes for Cutting Ben Cutting insists his Brisbane Heat don’t need a facelift despite the man himself putting the call out for a good plastic surgeon after an attempted catch gone wrong. The allrounder will be sporting two black eyes after a skied Marcus Harris drive went through his fingers and hit him in the face. He spilled the catch and some blood, despite claiming he had held onto the ball long enough. “The first thing she (my girlfriend) said was ‘that looks like a mono-brow, we need to get that fixed’,” Cutting said. - AAP

Siddle’s long wait for redemption By RoB FoRsaith No Australian cricketer has waited longer for a ODI recall than Peter Siddle, who has used the Big Bash League to catapult into World Cup calculations. The 34-year-old Siddle will face India at the SCG today, playing his first ODI since 2010. Siddle’s break between 50-over games for Australia is unprecedented, with the previous longest stretch being wicketkeeper Tim Zoehrer (1987-94). Siddle has a golden chance to ensure his comeback fares better than that of Zoehrer, who played a single ODI in 1994 because of an Ian Healy injury and was ushered into first-class retirement when WA signed Adam Gilchrist. Siddle doesn’t boast express pace but has earned a reputation as being the Adelaide Strikers’ ice-cold finisher with the ball. From the foothills of Mt Hutt to battling it out against the best of New Zealand’s amateur footballers, the journey for Andreas Wilson has been a successful one that has seen him rack up 50 games for the Canterbury United Dragons. Born and raised in Methven, Wilson has now spent five seasons playing for Canterbury’s top football side that competes in the ISPS Handa Premiership. “I played for Methven when I was really young and then shifted to playing for Mid Canterbury in Ashburton,” he said. “When I was 14 I started travelling twice a week to Christchurch, once to train and once to play for a Canterbury development side.” Despite enjoying his football, he never saw himself playing for the top side in the region. “It was pretty surreal to be a local player playing for my local team who I had grown up watching,” he said. “Unfortunately there is not a huge amount of players in the league who are actually playing at their local teams.” Also having the ability to take to the field with the players he had grown up watching was a major bonus for Wilson. “Dan Terris is someone that
has been around for ages and to go and watch him and then play alongside him was amazing,” he said. Life is not always easy playing semi-professional football, with Wilson having to juggle a fulltime job, a wife and home and four trainings a week plus games, but Wilson says he is keen to keep going as long as he keeps enjoying it. The league is a competitive one, with two teams
dominating in recent years, with Auckland City and Team Wellington hogging the trophy. “Auckland City are the toughest of the toughest but they are great games to be able to test yourself,” Wilson said. “We have made the semis a few times but they are hard to look at as personal highlights as we have lost all the ones we played. “There are a few individual games you can definitely look back on as highlights but every
time I get to step out there as a Cantabrian playing for Canterbury that is a highlight.” Despite Christchurch being a rugby-mad city, Wilson said support is still strong for the Dragons in the garden city. “The Christchurch footballing community is a small one for sure but everybody knows everybody and there is a huge amount of support,” he said. “We have a good core of supporters and we are one of the best attended teams in the league.” When it comes to others looking to get anywhere in football, Wilson has only simple advice – enjoy it. “Playing at a high level is tough but that is what makes it great, but the most important thing is that you are enjoying it,” he said. “Also you will need to work harder than everybody else if you want to achieve, you are going to have to work for it, especially coming from a smaller area like Mid Canterbury.” The Dragons currently sit fourth on the table, and their next home game is tomorrow against Hawke’s Bay United at 2pm.

Rudan is incensed by the mounting foul count against his star striker, who shook off the heavy-handed attention of the Western Sydney Wanderers to score two late goals in the 3-2 win on Tuesday. Krishna now sits third on the goal-scorers chart this season with seven, but Rudan fears the speedy Fijian international will become increasingly targeted by over zealous defences. In brief Support for Jones Fullback Mike Brown has defended Eddie Jones’ training methods after figures revealed players are more likely to be severely injured during sessions conducted on his watch as England rugby coach. They’ve got players and the playing kit is on its way, but Ashburton’s first ever senior women’s rugby team is still without a coach. The Ashburton Celtic Rugby Club is entering a team in the Christchurch women’s open grade competition this year and after putting out the call for potential players in October last year, has been inundated with women keen to play. Club president Kevin Donaldson said they’ve also had some
expressions of interest for the coaching position, but are yet to lock someone in. “Everything else is in place. “The uniform has been ordered, we’ve got a good bunch of girls and some good trainers coming in on a regular basis to help with fitness and skills,” Donaldson said. Regardless of whether or not a coach can be found, Celtic is committed to having a women’s team on the field this season, Donaldson said. He said while it would be great to have one coach to lead the
team, he’s confident they can still have a successful team if someone isn’t found. Donaldson said a manager is already in place, along with a lot of helpers who can assist. While the response from potential players to date has been good, Donaldson said there’s still room for more players, too. “It’s for anyone out there who are considering rugby. “This is their opportunity to either revive their previous rugby career, or make a new start with a new sport,” Donaldson said. Those who have already put
their hand up to form part of the Celtic women’s team this season are a real mixture. Some have played a number of seasons in the Christchurch competition for other clubs, while others have never played rugby before. Donaldson said the Celtic women’s team will cater to all levels. Weekly trainings for the women’s side got under way at Celtic on Tuesday night and from next week they’ll meet for trainings every Tuesday and Thursday night at 7pm.
Cane on recovery road Sam Cane has made huge strides in his long recovery from a horror neck injury. The All Blacks flanker posted a photo on social media of himself running for the first time in three months, giving fans new hope that he will recover in time for September’s Rugby World Cup. Cane went down injured in October after a collision with Springboks loose forward Francois Louw in the 35th minute of the All Blacks comeback victory at Loftus Versfeld. Kilted Kiwi back on the rails after drug dramas By LukE Edwards John Hardie’s motivation to rebuild his career and reputation at Newcastle Falcons after a drug ban is one many will understand – the desire to make his parents proud again, to give something back to those who have always stood by him. Born and raised in New Zealand, Hardie converted to Scotland’s cause, through a Scottish grandmother and on the back of a successful spell at Edinburgh as an openside flanker with the foraging skills to make himself a nuisance at any breakdown. Things were good, the decision to leave the family farm, 90km
south of Queenstown, to move to Europe was a success. He could not have been happier. Then came that moment. A night out, an allegation he had been seen taking cocaine in an Edinburgh bar. There was a disciplinary hearing, a three-month ban followed, even though he had not failed a drug test. Hardie felt like an outcast. Through it all, the thing that hurt him most was the shame and regret he had caused those back home who loved him most. It still bites, more than a year later. “It did cross my mind that I’d be seen as damaged goods,” said Hardie, his features carrying most
of the trademark battle scars of a top-level flanker. “You always have those sorts of things in the back of your mind, but you have to remember that you have done a lot of things in your career that had a more positive impact. “It was a really difficult time for those close to me. “It’s always going to be there in the background. It’s going to be there when people do a search for my name on the internet. “I know for my parents, it’s hard, because whenever they read something in the paper it’s, ‘John Hardie ... something, something’. It’s around those lines. “They don’t like that, but like
me, they’ve just got to accept it. I’ve got to go back out on the rugby field and make them proud and re-inforce the fact that I’ve moved on. They have always loved watching me play rugby and I want to give them that pleasure again.” Hardie returned to the Edinburgh side at the end of his ban last year, but he was tarnished by the scandal. He missed the Six Nations, lost his place in the Scotland squad and left the Scottish capital in the summer. A move to Clermont was ruined by a back injury and the French club declined to sign him. It brought things sharply into perspective.
If he got another chance, if someone was willing to take a risk, he would seize it. That was when Newcastle stepped in. An injury to captain Will Welch opened a slot for a flanker and Hardie was back doing what he loved. This week, the Falcons announced they have agreed to extend the contract he signed to the end of the season for another two years. “Newcastle have given me a really good opportunity and they have backed me,” Hardie said, in an accent that immediately betrays where he comes from. “Once you get that opportunity, you’ve got to take it.” - NZME

Sandgren surprises Unheralded American Tennys Sandgren has progressed to the final of the ASB Classic, with a comprehensive straight sets win over Philipp Kohlschreiber. World No 61 Sandgren was the last player accepted into the main draw at the time of cutoff last Saturday morning, but has been in imperious form in Auckland. That continued yesterday afternoon, as he demolished the 2008 ASB Classic champion Kohlschreiber 6-4 6-3 in 70 minutes. It takes the 27-year-old Sandgren into just the second ATP final of his career, after he reached the decider in Houston last year, where he lost to compatriot Steve Johnson. It also continues a renaissance for Tennessee-born player, who only broke into the top 100 in 2017, after spending the most of his professional career grinding away on the Challenger circuit. Sandgren came to prominence at the Australian Open last year, when as world No 97, he progressed to the last eight, becoming the lowest ranked quarter finalist in 22 years. During that remarkable run in Melbourne he beat world No. five Dominic Thiem and three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka,

Norrie outlasted German warrior Jan-Lennard Struff 7-5 4-6 6-3 in just under two hours yesterday, in a gripping contest in sweltering conditions. It was a courageous effort from Struff, whose doubles match didn’t finish until 12.30am on Friday morning, after he went on court at 11.15pm, following his marathon singles semi-final victory over Pablo Carreno Busta. The margins were as fine as they come, but in the end a single service break in the third set was enough to ensure Norrie’s passage to the final. It’s a momentous moment for the 23-year-old, who has reached his first ATP final in his own backyard. Norrie, clearly feeling the emotion, got the wobbles slightly when serving for the match, with two double faults to start the game, before recovering with the mental strength he has exhibited all week, sealing the match with a smash. - NZME
Teary Murray set for last Australian Open By Michael RaMsey A shattered Andy Murray is desperately hoping for a Wimbledon swansong but concedes the Australian Open may be his last tournament with a chronic hip injury forcing him to confront retirement. Murray was in tears yesterday when he made the announcement, briefly walking out of a media conference to gather his composure. Britain’s only men’s singles champion in more than 80 years intends to play in the season-opening major at Melbourne Park and hopes to bid farewell to his legion of fans at The All England Club in July. But after slipping to No. 230 after last year’s hip surgery, the former world No. 1 said there was a chance he wouldn’t make it beyond the Open starting on Monday. “I’m not feeling good. “I’ve obviously been struggling for a long time,” the 31-year-old said. “I’ve been in a lot of pain for probably about 20 months now. “I can still play to a level, (although) not a level that I’m happy playing at. “But it’s not just that – the pain is too much really. The Methven born-and-raised Currie has elected to miss next week’s Red Bull Defiance, a race which he founded and created, but he’ll still be involved. Currie is a three-time winner of the race and last year was victorious with Dougal Allan in record fashion. His absence from the event has
opened up the race for a potential new winner this year. “Braden is the founder and creator of the challenging two day course and every year he has raced his team has won,” says Red Bull Defiance Race Director Bex Law. “He took out 2014, 2017 and 2018 and last year claimed line honours with team-mate Dougal Allan in record style. “With Braden not racing the field is now wide open for anoth-
er team to step up to Red Bull Defiance victory.” Currie finished a determined fifth place at the 2018 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii last October – crossing the finish line as the sixth fastest individual pro male in the history of the event – and is now focusing on his path to Kona for 2019. “As the official Red Bull Defiance ambassador, Braden will be at the event supporting teams

Stayer a definite chance Chance To Dance’s Gr.1 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m) campaign steps up a gear at Trentham today. The Teofilo nine-year-old tackles the Gr.3 Barneswood Farm Trentham Stakes (2100m), looking to claim his first win in more than a year. That last win came in the Gr.3 OMF Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie in November 2017 under weight-for-age conditions but the Jamie Richards-trained stayer reverts to set weights and penalties today and looks well placed as a 103-rated galloper in just 3kg above the minimum. “I’m not sure really where we’re at with him. “It’s been hard with a horse like him, high up in the handicaps and having to claim to get weight off his back,” Richards said. “He’s not working as well as he was this time last year either but he’s a year older and he’s a lot more relaxed, so maybe he’s just taking a bit longer to come up. “He’s well in himself though and he gets in
