The charges were laid after police executed a search under warrant on Sullivan’s rural property in November.

Police prosecutor Simon Heeley told the court a Savage .223 calibre rifle, valued at $1200, had been stolen during a burglary in the Fairlie district a couple of days earlier.

Deformed mountain lion A dead mountain lion has baffled biologists after it was found with a fully formed set of teeth growing out of its forehead.

According to the Telegraph the lion was given to scientists in the US state of Idaho after it was legally shot for trying to attack a dog. The law requires a conservation officer to check mountain lions after they are shot. The officer was shocked to discover whiskers and teeth growing from the cat’s forehead.

New Yorkers strip off New Yorkers thought it was a hot thing to strip to their underwear in winter — in public — along with pantless crowds in about 60 countries. Twenty-four-year-old Miguel Ramos called himself a “no-pant virgin” in Sunday’s No Pants Subway Ride. It was his first foray into the “international celebration of silliness”, as organisers billed it. The laughter-filled ritual started in New York in 2002. It was co-ordinated by Improve Everywhere, a global flash mob. Participants were assigned personal numbers and told to show up at central gathering spots in each city borough.

They then boarded subways, tearing their pants off on the tracks. Whole New York families took part, including babies bared to their diapers. Pantless riders also appeared in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, London and elsewhere.

Defence lawyer Paul Bradford said Kelynack thought the tree, growing in the middle of a stream, was dead.

He was keen to engage in the restorative justice process, however the DoC prosecutor declined.

“The department does not participate in restorative justice because there is no victim, the department is not a person,”

she said. Judge Maze asked whether iwi should be involved, to which the prosecutor said reserves such as Peel Forest had been in place for a very long time.

“The reserves were only made possible by the generosity of iwi in the first place,” Judge Maze countered.

“That is a rather selfish attitude.”

The prosecutor then said the people of Peel Forest village

were very interested in the outcome of the case.

Judge Maze suggested the restorative justice panel may choose to look at a programme which would highlight the consequences of destroying protected vegetation.

She asked Safer Ashburton’s restorative justice officer Toni Sowman to look into the matter.

Kelynack is due back in court for sentencing on April 11.

Students set to weave singing magic again

Mid Canterbury’s Summer Singing School has attracted its largest ever contingent of singing superstars, ready to belt out some musical magic.

In its 16th year, the highly acclaimed week-long musical theatre course swung into action yesterday with a total of 125 participants eager to perform.

This year there are not only students from around Mid Canterbury but also from Christchurch, Ellesmere and South Canterbury.

Musical director Jo Castelow, who is working in tandem with choreographer Alice Sollis, said the calibre of talent this year was extremely high.

“We are just so lucky,” she said.

Three of the students taking part this year are in the first year at the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art (NASDA) with another set to head off to the school shortly.

Another student studies at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

Pedestrian hit by car dies A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car in Oamaru. The man who died was one of two pedestrians hit on the corner of Eden Street and Thames Street on State Highway 1. “It appears a male driver has mounted the kerb and hit two pedestrians and a stationary vehicle before coming to a stop.” police said.

St John ambulance spokesman Ian Henderson said it was alerted to the incident at about 11.30am and sent two ambulances to the scene. Four patients were transported to Oamaru Hospital – one patient with serious injuries and three patients with moderate injuries.

Leeston farmer to stand for ECan seat

Leeston man John Sunckell is hoping he will be part of a history making event in Canterbury when democracy returns to the governance of Environment Canterbury in this year’s local body elections.

Election day might be 10 months out, but Mr Sunckell has decided to show his hand early.

“If you’re committed to making a bid for a seat around the council table, then there is little point in holding back,” he said.

After a six year stint with a Government appointed team at the helm, ECan will return to a democracy-appointee governance model this year.

DoC’s attitude irks judge A district court judge has taken the Department of Conservation (DoC) to task over its attitude toward restorative justice.

Hayden James Kelynack, 33, appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday to answer for cutting down a totara tree in the Peel Forest Scenic Reserve in May last year.

John Sunckell Commissioners were appointed to govern ECan in April 2010 after a Government review found it was an organi-

sation in trouble. A full return to democracy is planned at the 2019 elections.

Mr Sunckell is a supporter of a gradual return to a democratically elected governance team, saying it was critical that the gains made over the past six years were not lost.

“From my perspective the place is travelling pretty well now, but we can always make changes and improve, what we can’t do is go back.”

Under the team of commissioners, ECcan had become a much more open organisation with greater community involvement in both understanding and finding solutions for issues in the region.

The elected member model for this year’s election will see

seven seats around the council table taken by democratically elected people and six by government appointees.

Of the seven elected members four will come from Christchurch City, one from North Canterbury, one from South Canterbury and one from Selwyn and Mid Canterbury and it is this seat that Mr Sunckell is chasing.

“If others want to challenge me, that’s great,” he said.

As a third generation farmer with four years service on the Selwyn/Waihora zone committee and several other roles on water and irrigation committees, Mr Sunckell said he had a solid understanding of the range of issues ECan faced.

A Taser stun gun and a 28 rounds of ammunition were also found in the house and 12 grams of cannabis and a pipe were unearthed in an outbuilding.

While Sullivan admitted using the cannabis, he denied knowing the rifle was stolen – claiming it was left in his care by “a friend he didn’t know”.

He said the .22 rifle had been left at the address by a previous occupant and he had found the taser.

Sullivan was convicted and remanded on bail for sentencing on February 29.

Judge Maze requested the pre-sentence report to include appendices for electronically monitored sentencing options.

Good harvest expected

Irrigated farms in Mid Canterbury look set to have average to above average cereal harvest yields this year despite challenging el nino conditions.

However dry land farms are expected to be back in yield particularly with spring sown crops according to commentators.

Federated Farmers Arable vice-chairman Brian Leadley said his crops were looking “pretty good” despite the dry conditions in November.

Mr Leadley has 110 hectares of wheat and 45 hectares of barley to harvest on his irrigated farm and said disease pressure had been lower than the past year because of the big dry with rain-

fall in late December and early January setting him up for a promising harvest.

“We are tentatively looking at a good harvest. I don’t think it will be exceptional.”

Like many farmers this season, with wells under pressure he had been able to meet water requirements with the help of a stored water allocation from Lake Coleridge.

Barrhill farmer Tom Rudge began harvesting 100 hectares of winter sown barley on his dry land farm yesterday and said frost and hail damage put paid to having reasonable yields but he was hoping that wheat crops would perform better.

Foundation of Arable Research cereal manager Rob Crai-

gie said they had just harvested the first autumn sown dry land barley trials at Chertsey and he had been “pleasantly surprised” by the results.

“It’s quite pleasing. They averaged between 6.5 and 8.5 tonnes (per hectare) depending on the sowing date.”

Mr Craigie believed farmers who had irrigation systems not up to replacing 5mls a day of moisture from evapotranspiration would have decreased yields but those with better irrigation had good crops.

In South Canterbury where the dry conditions have hit harder, Federated Farmers Arable Chairman Guy Wigley was harvesting winter barley on his dry land property where it was

yielding 7 to 8 tonnes per hectare.

December rain had meant that dry land crops had recovered to near average yields, he said.

“Which is pretty good really.”

Mr Wigley said if the dry conditions in November hadn’t occurred cereal crops would have been better than average in the area.

Although the dairy slump meant many farmers were not buying grain for cows Mr Wigley said that there was still significant tonnages being used in North Otago and Waimate.

He recently sold 150 tonnes of cereal silage for $0.24 cents per kilogram and had sold around 400 tonnes of barley for over $300 per tonne for feed.

Savage Club grounds turned into dumping ground

Ashburton’s Savage Club members say that while they’re happy to take their own rubbish to the dump they don’t expect to clean up after the people who are treating their meeting rooms as their personal dumping ground.

Late last week members turned up at their meeting rooms to be greeted by the sight of four supermarket trolleys pushed onto their lawn and laden with household rubbish.

Yesterday the rubbish was still there but one of the trolleys had disappeared and its contents left strewn across the club’s lawn.

Members are furious, with one, secretary Jim Burgess saying cleaning up after other people was something the group of mainly 80 plus year olds, was not keen to do.

“We think we know who did it but we need to prove it and we’ve contacted the council but they say they won’t be going near it, it’s on private land,” he said He knows nearby supermarket Countdown will want their trolleys back and hoped club

Registration costs People lining up to register their boat for use on Lake Hood will need to have a $10 note in their hand. Boat registration is compulsory (but not enforceable) for lake users but it comes with a $10 charge to cover the cost of printing registration labels. In a national trial, the lake has been asking users to register their vessel since 2013 and now has more than 1400 names on its list of users.

Modest spend When it comes to spending up large on trips, conferences and training, the Ashburton District Council is a modest organisation.

Over the year to June 30, 2015, Ashburton’s staff and councillors spent just $52,000 on travel, training and conferences. Cashstrapped Christchurch City staff and elected members, however, are on record as having spent $685,000 in the past year on overseas travel and another $533,000 on travel around New Zealand, a total of $1.2 million. The following Ashburton councillors lodged mileage claims to attend council meetings or to drive to represent council: Martin Nordqvist, $308; Donna Favel, $86; Ken Cutforth, $1001; Darryl Nelson, $369.

Exam results due Hundreds of students all over Mid Canterbury will be eagerly – or anxiously – sitting in front of their computers tomorrow morning awaiting the results of last year’s NCEA exams. Nearly 150,000 students participated in the exams which ran from November 6 to December 4. A team of 1750 marked all papers by Christmas.

A Christchurch bus driver who made a toilet stop says he was robbed at knifepoint. The bus driver told police he had stopped outside a toilet block at Broadhaven Park in Parklands on Saturday at about 7.15pm. He says two men armed with a knife approached him and demanded money. “They fled the scene in a white vehicle travelling east along Ascot Drive with a number of coins from the driver’s cash box and the driver’s wallet and personal cellphone,” said Constable Justin Robbins.

Bird massacre sparks anger

When Brian Graystone and his grandchildren went to Ashton Beach they were hoping to watch seals playing in the surf, instead they were greeted by a wildlife massacre that left two children distraught and their grandfather angry.

Just a few minutes from the car park the family came across dozens of dead seabirds scat-

tered below the sea cliffs. The birds appeared to have been shot and shot gun cartridges littered the ground.

“You could see the birds were peppered with pellets.

“These morons have obviously come down here and they’ve been firing at them. They were all up against the cliff face,” Mr Graystone said.

The birds were a mix of terns and seagulls and there was pos-

sibly an albatross too, he said.

“We’re all very upset about this and very angry at how some mindless group feel the need to party on this beach. They left all their gun cartridges behind to add to their gunshot party time.”

Mr Graystone believes the birds were shot on Sunday.

He’s concerned that many others may have been injured because of the large number of

cartridges and cartridge boxes lying around.

“I imagine it’s been a group of people thinking how clever they were shooting birds that were flying right in front of them.”

The dead birds were found near the Quarry fishing area off Williams Road, an area that’s well used at weekends by people fishing and others who simply sit and enjoy the sea, he said.

The Methven Summer School was a complete success this year, committee member Karen Blacklow says.

More than 300 people attended the annual programme which offers courses ranging from art, to cooking, singing and tramping.

Ms Blacklow said the numbers were great for most of the courses and they received excellent reviews.

“It was really good, everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.”

The whole school was run smoothly and the weather held for most days, which was great, she said.

Each year they hold their popular regular classes including art, golf and upholstery but they always try to add in a few different ones.

This year the new courses which received great responses were cellphone photography, sausage making and makeup.

Sausage making had been done a number of years ago.

Now that the school has wrapped up they have started thinking about next year and had

already received some new ideas from their student surveys.

Several courses were not able

to run this year, but this was normal, she said. “We always anticipate that some courses are going

to be cancelled.”

The summer school has been running for about 28 years.

It won’t be long until the new and improved St Vincent de Paul building is open for business.

The St Vincent de Paul Society bid farewell to its old premises in The Triangle in July of last year, before heading off to a temporary base at the Ashburton Learning Centre.

The building, located on the corner of Victoria and Cameron streets, was originally set to be demolished in August but all demolition ground to a halt following issues with a neighbouring property.

However, those issues were quickly resolved and by October work was back on track.

installation of the boundary panels and the underpinning and reflashing of the walls, the concrete floor was poured and the roof fitted.

Now the exterior is being painted and is expected to be finished within the next few days.

The floor and veranda area has also been completed and all that is left is internal finishings.

Completion is scheduled for the end of February to mid-March.

The shop will continue to operate from the learning centre premises near the Holy Name Church until the new single storey building was finished.

Following its completion Mr Knight said he expected the move back would not take long.

The old St Vincent de Paul building located in The Triangle was demolished last year and the rebuild work is right on track.

Christine Richards has one big goal for 2016, getting neighbours talking to one another.

The Neighbourhood Support co-ordinator has 381 support groups on her books but not all of those are active. While some have leaders who keep their street on its toes, others have little more to tie them together than the Neighbourhood Support sticker on their front door.

And if she achieves nothing else over the next 12 months, Mrs Richards wants to find new street contacts for those groups to kickstart them back into life.

“And that’s a bit of a challenge really. Sometimes it’s as simple as looking into who’s on the list but in most cases it takes a bit of work,” she said.

While kick-starting inactive groups might take a bit of effort, there are plenty of wins, and towards the end of last year those wins kept coming in the Hinds area where new groups were formed and old groups re-energised.

“After I spoke to the Hinds Citizens Association group 37 households in the south-east part of the Hinds district signed up, that was an awesome result because the rural areas are usually more difficult to set up groups and yet that’s often the area where the need is probably more.”

While the online community Neighbourly is a new player in the neighbourhood network, Mrs Richards believes there is room for both groups.

“There is a lot of value in connecting with people over the fence, face-to-face,” she said.

During the year she will be working to establish support groups in Mt Somers and Mayfield and possibly Lake Hood as well as breathing new life into established, but flagging groups.

But she’s realistic.

“It’s all very well me saying they need a group but I need to have people who want to buy into the idea too.”

Neighbourhood Support New Zealand Incorporated was established in 1999. The organisation works closely with the police and a range of organisations to reduce crime, improve safety and prepare to deal with emergencies and natural disasters.

Its objective is to make homes, streets, neighbourhoods and communities safer and more caring places in which to live.

Lucky not to Discharged on firearms charge be behind bars The following people appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday:

A young man with a habit of failing to turn up to community work sober and continuing to offend while under sentence is lucky not to be behind bars.

Richard Sidney Parore, 21 of Hampstead, appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday where he admitted charges of burglary, receiving stolen property and unpaid fines.

An application to cancel his existing community work sentence was not opposed by defence lawyer Paul Bradford.

Police prosecutor Simon Heeley said the latest burglary charges resulted from a break in on a Wakanui lifestyle block on November 17.

Parore and an associate used a screwdriver to remove a window pane and gain access to a workshop. Once inside the alarm activated. They attempted to stop it by wrecking the control panel but to no avail.

Soon after a security guard arrived and the pair made off across

paddocks.

They were arrested shortly afterwards.

Parore was already subject to sentence for burglary at the time of the fresh offending.

When he appeared on the breach matter last month he was warned further non-compliance with his existing community work sentence would result in a stint in prison.

However he has not made good on the outstanding 21 hours.

Referring to the presentence report, Judge Maze said Parore seemed to be incapable of reporting in a safe and sober state.

She held back on a custodial remand, but requested the presentence report include options for electronically monitored sentences.

The existing community work sentence was cancelled, and Parore will be resentenced on that and other matters on February 29.

His victims will also be offered the chance to participate in restorative justice before that date.

A Pudding Hill man whose gun exploded in his hands while shooting pigeons appeared in the Ashburton District Court for the unlicensed use of a firearm yesterday.

Thomas Anthony Plunkett, 23, sustained serious injuries to his hand when the barrel of his shotgun split on December 3.

Police alleged he was using a mix of old and new 20 and 12 gauge ammunition at the time.

He was admitted to Christchurch Public Hospital for treatment.

Judge Maze said his actions were irresponsible but he had only harmed himself, and would suffer the results of his injuries for the rest of his life, before convicting and discharging him.

Marcus James Anderson, of Ashburton, admitted charges of assault with intent to injure and assaulting a woman.

The court was told an aggressive Anderson was asked to leave an address on October

18. He later returned uninvited, grabbed his victim by the neck and forced her head onto a table.

She ran inside, while attempting to call police.

Anderson then hit her on the back of the head in an effort to take the phone off her, forcing her to the floor.

He was convicted on both charges and will be sentenced on March 14, to enable time for a restorative justice conference to be convened.

Augusta Ashley Raymond Noata, 35, of Ashburton, took umbrage with the occupants of a vehicle who drove past his home taunting him and tooting the horn.

He followed them in his own car, punching a passenger in the head through the window.

Noata then followed his victim to the Ashburton Police Station, where he resumed the attack in the public foyer.

Both parties will sit down together at a restorative justice conference before he returns to court for sentencing on February 29.

Abdul Murshad, 28, of Ashbur-

ton, was found asleep in his vehicle near the centre of the road, with the lights on and the engine running on December 12.

Yesterday saw him in the dock, where he admitted charges of drink driving (EBA 616mcg/l).

He was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $450 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Kaleb Ethan Finlayson, 20, of Lismore was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $200 and ordered to pay court costs of $130 for driving while his licence was suspended.

Truck driver Malcolm Charles John Butler, 42, of Hampstead, was convicted on charges of failing to adhere to prescribed rest periods and falsifying entries in his log book.

He was disqualified from driving for a month and fined $250.

Joseph Winiata Patu, 30, of Ashburton, admitted breaching a supervision clause in his sentence.

He was convicted and remanded at large for sentencing on February 29.

In brief Twenty killed in crash Mexican officials say 20 people died when a bus plunged off a bridge and fell into a deep gorge.

The head of the civil defence office in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz says the accident killed 20 of the 45 people on board.

Yolanda Gutierrez said the bus was apparently carrying members of a soccer team when it skidded off a bridge near the city of Cordoba.

The Veracruz state government said the bus was likely speeding, and the driver lost control when it went over a speed bump. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto expressed his condolences to the victims’ families in his Twitter account. It was unclear if the driver survived.

White House chief of staff Denis McDonough said the B-52 flight was intended to underscore to South Korean allies “the deep and enduring alliance that we have with them.”

McDonough said the United States would work with South Korea, Japan, China and Russia “to deeply isolate the North Koreans” and “squeeze” them until they live up to prior commit-

ments to get rid of their nuclear weapons.

“That’s the baseline requirement they have to rejoin the international community,” McDonough said. “Until they do it, they’ll remain where they are which is an outcast – unable to provide for their own people.”

There was no immediate reaction from North Korea’s state media to the B-52 fly-over, which also happened after North Korea’s third nuclear test in 2013.

Couple kept adopted daughter in ‘glorified cage’ A husband and wife in Sarasota, Florida, have been accused of child abuse after they allegedly told authorities that they routinely tied up and locked their 12-year-old daughter inside a playhouse.

In an affidavit cited by CBSaffiliate WTSP, the 1.5m by 2m playhouse was described by a detective as a “glorified cage”.

“She wasn’t allowed to leave the playhouse to use the restroom,” Sheriff’s Lieutenant Joe Giasone told WTSP. “She’d have to do all that inside.”

Police allege that Eugenio Erquiaga, a doctor, and his wife, Victoria, a lawyer, used zip ties to restrain the girl’s ankles and wrists before locking her inside the cramped enclosure for hours on end, according to WTSP. The playhouse could be barred shut with a piece of wood, had most of its windows screwed shut and smelled of urine, according to CBS-affiliate WINK.

Wildfires that killed two men and destroyed more than 140 buildings in southwest Australia were being brought under control, officials said yesterday. The blazes had scorched more than 71,150 hectares of farms and woodland south of Perth since they were sparked by lightning strikes last Wednesday, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services said.

The fires had destroyed 143 buildings, including 128 houses, it said. Most of the property damage occurred in the township of Yarloop, where two men in their 70s died on Thursday, Emergency Services Minister Joe Francis said.

Four firefighters sustained minor injuries.

Eugenio Erquiaga and Victoria Erquiaga have been accused of child abuse.

Police said the couple – who were arrested last week – told investigators that their daughter was prone to violent outbursts and the restraints were used to protect the family’s six other children, according to WTSP. Police said the couple came up with the method of restraint recently, after seeing zip ties used in a television show featuring

police. The pair is facing aggravated child abuse charges The couple’s attorney, Derek Byrd, urged the public to withhold judgment about the parenting style.

“I’m certain any people in the public would say that’s not the way they would handle it, and they’re entitled to their opinion,” he told WTSP.

“The question is, is it criminal to handle a problematic child that way?”

The alleged abuse may have escaped authorities’ attention if the victim hadn’t fled her family’s house, finding her way to a neighbour’s home.

Sean Macindoe, the 19-yearold neighbour, told WTSP the girl said: “My parents abandoned me. I was left and ran away.”

The 12-year-old girl, who was adopted, was part of a large group of biological and adopted children in the Erquiaga household, according to CBS News. In addition to two other adopted children, the family also includes four biological children from 5 to 13 years old.

The couple’s other children are in custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families, but police said none of them have reported abuse or neglect to authorities, CBS reported.

Police in Philadelphia are investigating a tip that a man charged in the ambush shooting of a patrolman is connected to a radical group that may continue to pose a threat to officers. The police department said someone approached an officer on the street and alleged that the man who attacked Officer Jesse Hartnett “had an affiliation to a group with radical beliefs”. Police say they are working with the FBI to investigate the credibility of the information.

What’s fair down on the farm?

I

f there’s any district in New Zealand that should know the importance of playing it fair when it comes to farm staff it’s Ashburton.

We probably have a higher percentage of our population employed in the primary production sector than any other district in New Zealand and yet it’s an odds on bet we haven’t got it any more right than the rest of the country when it comes to employment terms and conditions.

Before the days of highly productive farms, widespread irrigation and before corporate culture hit the rural sector, working on a farm could be seen as a good lifestyle option. The good employers provided their farm staff with a free house, free meat and often free petrol and a raft of other benefits.

Wages were never flash, but at that time anyone working for a wage was never going to get rich, and on farms, most owners weren’t getting rich any time soon either.

That’s all changed. Today farming is a serious business. Landowners have made a serious investment in their asset and they want to make serious money in return. And that’s changed things for farm staff.

The hours of work on-farm have always been long, for boss and staff but today the boss might be an absentee owner.

Farm staff might be working 60 hours a week and often for days on end, but it’s an odds on bet they’re not taking home one and a half times the average Kiwi pay.

Yes there are highs and lows in workloads and hours according to seasonal demands, but most farm staff won’t come out on the winning side. Free accommodation or not.

A farm owner might happily work long hours because it’s his asset, his profit, but for his staff there isn’t the same incentive, the same reward.

Helen Kelly, former president of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, is calling for an official inquiry into the treatment of farm staff. Not an unreasonable request.

The farm owners who’re getting it right have nothing to fear and those who’re getting it wrong, might find it easier to get and keep staff once they get it right.

Profit lift on strong trading

Retirement villages pushing up consents

BY FIONA ROTHERHAM Warehouse Group is forecasting a 15 per cent to 21 per cent lift in first-half net profit for the country’s largest multi-channel retailer, following strong Christmas trading and improved management of seasonal stock.

Adjusted net profit after tax for the six months ending January 31 is expected to range between $43 million and $45 million, the board said in a statement.

Strong first-half sales and profit performance have been recorded across all the group’s retail brands with the on-going execution of the group’s strategy resulting in both sales and margin growth, it said.

The retail profit has been “somewhat tempered” at a group level by the anticipated start-up losses in the new financial services business, which are expected to continue for at least two years while it builds scale.

Outgoing chief executive Mark Powell, who is about to hand the reins over to Nick Grayston, said

the strong performance continues the positive momentum developed in the second half of last year, with the group’s initiatives starting to yield the required profit growth following four years of investment catch-up.

Chairman Ted van Arkel said full year profit guidance will be given at the release of the halfyear results on March 11 but it’s now expected to be up on last year, although not at the same level of the first-half increase giv-

At the annual meeting late last year, van Arkel said the board expected full year net profit to be broadly in line with the $57.1 million achieved in 2015, which was slightly down on the $60.7 million posted in 2014.

The board has changed its div-

idend policy to allow any profits from its new financial services group to be ploughed back into building up its lending book.

The dividend policy has been to pay out between 75 per cent and 85 per cent of adjusted net profit after tax and that’s now been modified to apply only to the retail group, excluding financial services.

Shareholders were paid a 16 cents per share dividend for 2015, which equates to 93.7 per cent of adjusted net profit after tax.

That was higher than normal because the company had promised shareholders when it raised $115 million for the financial services business in March 2014 that it would pay a 19 cents per share dividend for the next two years.

The board revised that back to 16 cents after a profit downgrade early last year and will now pay out of the modified policy range this financial year.

Warehouse Group shares are trading up 1 cent at $2.61.

New Zealand regional economic confidence rose in the December quarter, with an upswing in sentiment among dairy farmers and positivity in urban centres.

The Westpac McDermott Miller Regional Economic Confidence Survey showed increased optimism across all regions except Northland in the final three months of 2015.

Westpac industry economist David Norman said they had expected a bounce in sentiment after it floundered in September when dairy farmers faced low milk prices from Fonterra Cooperative Group, but in some cases the rise in optimism was “surprisingly large”.

The survey balances households expecting good or bad economic times in their region over the coming year as a percentage of households in that region, with a positive number indicating more households have a good economic outlook.

It was conduced from December 1 to 11, and sampled 1565 households.

Dairy-exposed regions reported increased optimism after Fonterra’s payout was revised up to $4.60 per kilogram of milk solids, from $3.85/kgMS in September.

Southland’s mood improved 52 percentage points to a net 16 per cent of respondents positive about the region’s economic outlook.

Taranaki/Manawatu-Whanganui rose 24 percentage points to net 9 per cent positive, Nelson/ Marlborough/West Coast was up 10 points to net 26 per cent positive, and Waikato moved up 5 points to net 4 per cent positive.

Urban centres also became increasingly upbeat, with Canterbury up 1.6 percentage points to 25 per cent, Auckland rising 8 points to 21 per cent, and Wellington gaining 12 points to 28 per cent net optimism.

Norman said Wellingtonians’ views were helped by “signs of life” in house price growth and high incomes compared to the cost of living, while Auckland was positive despite house price growth slowing as residential construction booms and the size of the city keeps consumers insulated from commodity price weakness.

The most optimistic region was Bay of Plenty, with a net 41 per cent of respondents upbeat in December.

Bay of Plenty has been the most positive region for the last three quarters, which Westpac’s Norman ascribed to the resurgent kiwifruit industry, strong house price growth, particularly in Tauranga, and falling unemployment.

Otago saw the biggest upswing in confidence, with a net 37 per cent of respondents optimistic compared with a net 4 per cent who were pessimistic when the survey was last conducted in September.

BY PAUL MCBETH New Zealand residential building consents rose 1.8 per cent in November, with demand for retirement village units driving approvals in the month.

Seasonally adjusted consents rose for a second month to 2377 in November from 2363 in October, even as approvals for new houses fell 0.3 per cent to 1652, according to Statistics New Zealand.

On an unadjusted basis, dwelling consents climbed 17 per cent to 2831 from November a year earlier, led by retirement village units more than doubling to 321.

Residential building permits were 9.1 per cent ahead in the year ended November to 26,793.

New Zealand is in a construction boom where authorities are chasing pent up demand for new housing in Auckland, and as the Canterbury rebuild starts to come off its peak.

The lack of supply in the country’s two-biggest cities spurred rapid price gains, and while those have moderated in Christchurch, Auckland housing is still near record highs.

Yesterday’s data show Auckland consents were almost unchanged at 966 in November from a year earlier, while Canterbury consents at 573 were down from 726 in the same month of 2014.

Wellington permits more than tripled to 328 in November from a year earlier, while Waikato consents climbed to 284 from 181.

“Annual residential consents issued in Auckland remained practically unchanged - although November 2015 was a big month for consents there, so was November 2014, which now falls out of the annual analysis,” Westpac Banking Corp industry economic David Norman said.

“Supply remains well below the 11,000 dwellings we estimate are required each year for Auckland to meet its long-term supply shortage.”

The value of all construction rose 22 per cent to $1.62 billion in November from a year earlier, and was up 12 per cent to $16.5 billion on an annual basis.

■ OPINION

Gene editing, are we being sensible about it?

G

ene editing in agriculture is something which we are going to be learning a lot more about in 2016.

It’s just another illustration of how the primary sector needs to keep progressing so we can remain resilient.

Still, as often the case, there is always resistance to new ideas and animal welfare groups are likely to be particularly hostile to anything which concerns animals being exposed to genetic engineering (GE).

For example, dehorning cattle is a sensitive issue which I can imagine bothers animal welfare groups, but what they don’t realise is it’s actually not uncommon for animals not to grow horns and it can also be in the animal’s best interests Now, there is no way to sugar coat the process, it is a painful procedure, but it is necessary.

It is simply not safe at all to leave horns on cows, not only would they inflict damage on their herd mates, but potentially cause a lot of harm to farmers.

I can think of one case where I took my eye off a freshly-calved cow. She took exception to me looking to see whether she had just had a heifer or a bull calf, and she basically flattened me!

While I was rather sore for the rest of the day, it was probably my pride that took the biggest knock. Still, if she had horns, it’s likely I would have endured fairly severe injuries.

Dehorning isn’t exclusive to New Zealand either; in every developed agricultural country you will encounter the exact same practice.

But if animal welfare groups were to videotape the process of dehorning, I’m sure they could spin a great narrative around it and once again make the case for turning vegan.

So while as an industry we are looking at the process and the best ways of doing it to minimise pain, one thing that isn’t being considered and probably has implications for other parts of agriculture as well, is gene editing.

Recently, in the United States, they gene edited cows so that they were born without horns.

Now, before everyone starts panicking about Frankenstein food etc, consider this. Some dairy cows are naturally polled, where they have a gene which means they grow no horns.

Unfortunately, this gene isn’t common, if the entire dairy farming world got together and decided that we would breed for this polled gene, then eventually we could end up with dairy cows around the world that were naturally polled.

That natural process, however, would come at the cost of breeding for other traits, such as production and type, and would likely undo much of the genetic gain of the past 20 years.

So the current generation of farmers around the world would not see the results of such collective action, however, we would take on for ourselves a lot of cost though.

Plus it would mean that breeding companies throughout the world would also sacrifice a lot of sunken investment in various breeding programmes. So I doubt such an action would ever happen.

But what would work is when the breeding companies are identifying

potential progeny to go into their breed programmes.

They remove the embryo, undertake the gene-editing technique to ensure that this potential high genetic worth cow or bull is also polled, and then of course in the future any naturally-conceived progeny from these animals would have a 50 per cent chance of being polled.

This would increase as the number of animals with the polled gene continued to grow and grow. You would only need to do the gene editing for around a decade or so before you would then be able to rely on the process happening naturally.

Because this process isn’t about introducing anything unnatural to cows, it is simply a way of speeding up what in theory could be done naturally, but in practice would probably never happen.

Now at this stage the process comes under the vague umbrella of GMO or GE, but is it?

We could continue to ban it, but consider this, what I just described is likely to take place in the United States and other parts of the world.

If we don’t allow this practice, we should consider then whether we continue to import genetics from those countries?

Also, do we consider the natural offspring of gene-edited polled cows to be GE? We could end up in a position where we are the only country still dehorning cattle and will that potentially affect our trade more on an animal welfare basis than any argument around GE? We really need to take a more nuanced view rather than just label everything as GE or GMO. It requires a sensible discussion around the various new techniques being developed all the time.

Wheels turning well for rally

Preparations for this year’s Wheat and Wheels Rally are well under way.

It will be the second time the Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club have organised the event, which is attracting attention both in New Zealand and internationally, club spokesman John Hall said.

Host farmer and vintage enthusiast Peter Butterick has sown the wheat paddock to be used for harvesting demonstrations over the weekend of April 2-3.

Bruce Taylor has been charged with irrigating the spring-planted crop to ensure it’s fit for harvest when the event rolls around.

“It’s a spring variety with whiskers for autumn harvest, it’s just flowering now – it’s probably the latest crop in Mid Canterbury,” Mr Taylor said.

Managing the wheat crop alongside a barley crop planted around the perimeter of the paddock is proving tricky.

The barley will be harvested earlier to provide a carpark for the rally.

“At this stage the wheat needs to be irrigated but not the barley,” he said.

Mr Hall said entries and inquiries were starting to come in.

Participants from all over the South Island and possibly some from the North Island are expected. “I’ve heard there’s tractors being driven up from Southland, and maybe some coming from the North Island. There’s also some interest from overseas visitors.”

In 2014 the event attracted more than 1000 entries, and more are expected this year, where the theme is pivot tractors, following on from the inaugural rally’s theme of

“Last time we expected 12-15 pivot tractors and we got 32, we didn’t know there were that many

out there,” he said.

to give a run are welcome to,” Mr Hall said.

Gordon Stephenson

Stephenson leaves lasting legacy The passing of Farm Environment Awards founder Gordon Stephenson is a huge loss for New Zealand agriculture, Simon Saunders, chairman of the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust (NZFET), says.

“Gordon was a farsighted and inspirational leader. As a passionate advocate for conservation he was steadfast in his belief that good farming and good environmental management go hand-in-hand. This message is still very much at the heart of the Ballance Farm Environment Awards (BFEA) today.”

Mr Saunders says the establishment of NZFET and the success of the BFEA programme are legacies of Gordon Stephenson’s drive and vision.

“NZFET is very saddened by Gordon’s passing. The trust extends its heartfelt condolences

to Celia and family.”

Mr Saunders says Mr Stephenson was a pioneer in the field of farm conservation and “a huge driver of change”. He made farmers take a much closer look at what they were doing on farm and showed them what could be achieved through good environmental management.

“Gordon wanted people to think about the long-term effects of their farming practices. He challenged farmers to ask themselves if what they are doing now will be sustainable in 100 years’ time.”

Mr Stephenson first mooted the idea for the awards in 1991.

He saw the competition as a way to recognise farmers who were trying to balance farm productivity with environmental protection. A key aim of the awards programme was to encourage

farmers to think about sustainability.

In recognition of Mr Stephenson’s foresight in establishing the awards programme, the trophy presented to each year’s national winner bears his name.

Mr Saunders says Mr Stephenson’s quest to promote and reward sustainable farm management practices is the basis for all NZFET activities.

As well as founding the Farm Environment Awards, Mr Stephenson was also a key instigator in the establishment of the QEII National Trust. He lent his time and skill to many other community and farming organisations, including Federated Farmers and the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust.

Mr Saunders says the former Waikato dairy farmer was a very effective communicator.

As the New Year starts, the weather has been giving us mixed messages, with some areas getting good rains while the driest areas are now more southerly based.

Cooler temperatures have helped, utilised the recent moisture, and forage crops have been boosted significantly by the recent rain.

Milk production nationally continues to ease as lower cow numbers and reduced feeding costs has restricted milk flows, but Fonterra reports it has sold increased volumes of further processed products in December, and stocks held are at a similar level to last year.

The first auction for the year disappointed with increased volumes offered dragging down prices by 1.6 per cent to a global market with plentiful supplies, and questions are still being asked whether the $4.60 payout can be achieved.

Reports suggest dairy farms for sale numbers are increasing, with 64 farms on the books in Southland, and buyers are scarce.

Lamb New Year pricing continues to weaken even though the UK Easter chilled production is under way, but frozen product stocks are slowly reducing at last.

Domestic lamb consumption figures continue to fall and the idea of a “eat NZ lamb day” has merit especially now at these softer prices.

Slaughter statistics show the kill is well advanced compared to last year as the falling schedule encourages farmers to kill at lighter weights, but recent rain could slow numbers offered.

Demand for store lambs has lifted at the local saleyards and numbers of cull ewes is falling as most of the weaning is now over.

The important Chinese market for mutton and lower quality lamb cuts remains under pressure and is having a big influence on pricing levels.

In the north the store ewe market has started and sound replacement breeding sheep were purchased for under $100 a head.

Wool The easing currency helped boost the North Island wool sale with prices for crossbred wool indicators lifting, and building lambs wool volumes selling at good prices.

Recent strong wool pricing has been a welcome boost for sheep breeders and lead last years values by 80c/clean for crossbreds and 127c for lambs.

Beef More easing of beef schedules as in the US high prices are making traders nervous and uncertainty caused by the Chinese sharemarket crash has shaken importers’ confidence in that market.

Prices have held well in the local saleyards for prime steers and scarce numbers of store cattle have kept pricing levels strong.

The big numbers of weaned dairy bulls reared seem to be finding homes at reasonable values, especially up north where many areas have plentiful feed.

Deer Summer venison schedules seem to have bottomed and sit $20/ head up on last year as processors report good Christmas sales into the traditional European markets.

Quiet optimism is being expressed by deer farmers as prices for both velvet and venison remain firm and early sire stag sales reflects positive prospects for the future.

Lots to interest between boring covers

R

ecently, amidst a box of more mundane material, I happened upon an interesting book.

It appears to have been a scrapbook, possibly belonging to Thomas A. Gates.

On the cover is a clipped headline from a newspaper bearing the word ‘gleanings’ – a very apt title for a book that has something for everyone. It has brought comments from most that I have shown it to.

The first entry was a handwritten transcript of a lecture given

by Mr Gates in Ashburton in 1878 concerning pneumatics. It combines current (for 1878) scientific fact with Biblical references. Today, we see religion and science as two distinct areas, but in the time the address was given there was no such division and scientists had to watch closely that any new theories did not appear to disagree with what was in the Bible.

Moving on from the history of air is Hail Victoria, a jubilee ode written by local newspaper editor W. J. Steward. Very patriotically, he manages to make reference to many of the places where the Queen ruled from Canada to the “dusky millions” in India.

Above – One of the few illustrations in the scrapbook is this American invention – the Hotchkiss Bicycle Railway system – essentially a bicycle that runs on a fence.

According to Wikipedia it was established in a few places in both America and Britain but never really “took off”.

Local references include reports of the first arbour day celebrated in New Zealand in 1892 and the annual concert performed by the Kinderspiel (also in 1892).

A most useful article was a description of the new buildings that were erected after the prospect building fire in East Street.

There were details of what the buildings, such as Mr Salek’s jeweller’s shop looked like, but also such business generating comments like that of Mr Nicholas the bootmaker, who said it didn’t matter what jewellery people wore – “They make but a scary

appearance unless their boots are in keeping.”

But the most readable articles were those concerning the world outside Ashburton’s boundaries.

The titles themselves draw you in. Don’t you want to know how long the Earth can sustain life for (Only a maximum of 5 million years) or the conditions of the workers of the dustheaps of London?

We learn how mine rats have stopped strikes and consider if dogs can learn to talk. There are quasi-scientific accounts of the hairy aborigines of Japan and

an eyewitness account of how a crocodile ate an elephant in the Transvaal.

It is easy to assume that without Google, Facebook or television, people in Ashburton in the 1890s lived an isolated life – unaware of what was happening in Christchurch, let alone the Transvaal or Japan.

Maybe, we suppose, they did not care, being too preoccupied with daily life here in Mid Canterbury.

The truth is that while some people did focus on what they or their neighbours were doing,

Such discoveries as this scrapbook help to make my job exciting, as one never knows what important, interesting, or just plain quirky information lies hidden between rather boring looking covers.

Fun way to raise funds

he Methven Cricket Club Sixes Tournament raised a total of $581 for the club on Sunday at the Methven Domain.

Eight teams participated in the tournament which featured past, present and future Methven players, with plenty of support from others from round the district.

Methven Cricket Club committee member Nick Clifford said the aim of the tournament was to have fun and raise additional funds for the club, and the high, and not so high, levels of skill on show did not disappoint.

Clifford said the future of Methven cricket looks bright with Young Guns, featuring players all under the age of 21, winning the final over Walker Team.

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt hit a century as he and fast bowler Mohammad Asif returned to competitive cricket after serving five-year bans for spot fixing. Munro the new master blaster of Eden Park The cricket world could be forgiven for having a dose of the “Colin Who?” after New Zealand’s new No 3 T20 slugger plonked his name in the record books at Eden Park on Sunday.

Colin Munro’s 14-ball 50 to propel New Zealand to a rapid nine-wicket win over Sri Lanka is second only to Indian Yuvraj Singh in terms of speed to the half century.

Yuvraj took just 12 balls against England at Durban in 2007, but Munro came as close as anyone has to toppling that remarkable mark.

Yet Munro is no stranger to international cricket.

He played one test against South Africa - the land of his birth - at Port Elizabeth at the start of 2013. It wasn’t a success and he’s been restricted to short form internationals since.

Even then, the Auckland lefthander has been an in and out proposition there too.

Born in Durban, the 28-yearold made his first-class debut for Auckland in 2006-07, but it took some time for him to make an impact.

In November 2012, Munro belted 269 off 252 balls against Wellington at Eden Park’s outer oval - 27 fours, 14 sixes - while sharing an Auckland sixth-wicket stand of 377 with Craig Cachopa.

Butt smacks a century

Last March, he improved on that. Munro clouted 281 off only 167 balls against Central Districts in Napier, hitting a New Zealand record 23 sixes - seven more than the previous record.

He put on 214 in 26 overs with Robbie O’Donnell, an Auckland fourth wicket record against CD. His 100 took just 67 balls.

This season, Munro topped the aggregates in the T20 domestic competition, belting 366 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 175.96 to carry Auckland to the title.

Indeed his strike rates make compelling reading.

In 20 T20s he’s going at 153.33; in 12 ODIs it is a slightly more pedestrian 94, with an average of 27.11.

In first-class cricket Munro averages 48.2, at 93 strike rate, with nine hundreds.

The point is, he scores fast no matter the format.

Among the keys to his recent success are not pre-planning.

“I’ve been trying to stay still and not premeditate too much, like I have in the past,” Munro said.

He admitted that a couple of years ago he’d have struggled to avoid throwing his wicket away.

“I’m trying to back my offside game. In the past couple of years I’ve been looking legside,” he said.

“I have been working on it with (Auckland coach) Mark O’Donnell, trying to hold my shape and hit through the offside.

“Then if they do come straight at me, my natural thing is to hit over cow corner and square leg.”

In both T20s against Sri Lanka, he spent time in the middle with captain Kane Williamson, and

it’s never a bad thing to produce strong form with the skipper looking on at close range.

Opener Martin Guptill held the New Zealand record for the fastest T20 50 at 19 balls, for about 10 minutes on Sunday.

Then Munro blew that effort out of the water.

“I’m not sure what these two had for breakfast but it was unbelievable to watch,’’ Williamson said.

“Guppy been doing it all summer and to see Munners helped was pretty special. It was world class hitting which we’ll only continue to encourage these boys to keep going.’’

Munro, who had no idea how close he was to Yuvraj’s record, was chuffed.

“I’ve shown glimpses in the Georgie Pie what I can do and it’s just pleasing to do it on the international stage,” Munro said.

He had put up a case for selection which the national panel simply could not ignore.

“His statistics are so compelling we just didn’t feel we could leave him out,” national selector Gavin Larsen said when Munro was confirmed in the T20 squad.

“His numbers speak for themselves, he’s had a couple of fantastic seasons at domestic level and he has seriously shot the lights out.”

Having dismissed Australia for 169 - having had them 115 for five - New Zealand reached 173 for six in 33 overs. Central Districts’ player Christian Leopard delivered the star turn for New Zealand.

Coming in at No 8, after New Zealand had slumped from 82 for two to 102 for six, Leopard hit an unbeaten 50 off 42 balls, sharing a 71-run stand with Auckland’s Finn Allen to secure the win.

Out - by a nose The Australian cricketer whose “nose run-out” has gone viral around the world says his competitive nature got the best of him after he suffered a bizarre and brutal blow to the nose in Saturday night’s Big Bash League game. Melbourne Stars legspinner Adam Zampa lunged at the ball in his follow-through and it rebounded off nonstriker Peter Nevill’s bat onto the bowler’s nose and then the stumps at high speed, with Nevill short of his ground. Renegades’ batsman Nevill ran to Zampa’s aid, but the 23-year-old bowler was too fired up to worry about that in the sold-out derby game.

In brief Snowden on target Ashburton’s John Snowden did not let the blustery weather affect his aim to win the Wellington Rifle Association Championships on Sunday. Snowden shot 50.06, 48.02, 49.04 and 50.05 from 300, 600, 800 and 1000 yards respectively to edge out Masterton’s Rick Fincham on aggregate 197.017 to 196.019.

Tearney knocked out Donald Young completed a win over New Zealander Finn Tearney at the ASB Classic in Auckland after a few wobbles in the second set - 6-2 6-3 in just over an hour. It was a decent effort from Tearney, in his first singles match at this level.

There was a gulf in ability, but not a tremendous one. Tearney showed enough to give hope that he can continue his rise up the rankings in 2016, though obviously the climb gets much steeper as you get closer to the top 200.

Batting high point despite loss

Mid Canterbury fell to an 18 run loss to the Canterbury Senior Performance Squad at the Ashburton Oval on Sunday, but will take confidence from a much improved batting display.

Canterbury SPS opener Nick Kwant justified the visitors’ decision to bat first after winning the toss by blasting 121 off 97 balls.

Kwant struck nine fours and seven sixes in an exceptional performance, but the same couldn’t be said for fellow opener Harshal Vyas.

Vyas could only muster three before being dismissed by Bevan Ravenscroft, and was soon followed by Bailen Thatcher as Ravenscroft took his second wicket of the tie.

Matt Parker (4) was then caught

by Matt Winter off the bowling of Ravenscroft, and Kwant was eventually removed by Harry Jones.

Mid Canterbury were pleased to see the back of Taylor Irie (68), after being dismissed lbw off the bowling of Hayden Sinclair.

After taking seven for seven off 3.4 overs against Coldstream a day earlier, Tech player Sinclair rounded off his weekend’s play by taking the wicket of Matt Hay (30).

The away side’s middle men remained defiant with Jack Turner recording an elegant 46 not out to propel SPS to 315 for seven from their allotted 50 overs while Sinclair (2 for 37 off 6) and Ravenscroft (3 for 53 off 10) were the best of the Mid

Canterbury bowlers.

With a tough target to chase down the Mid Canterbury faithful hoped for a solid foundation from the openers, but when James Southby went for a golden duck, they could have been forgiven for fearing the worst.

Fortunately for the men in green and yellow, Callum Gallagher (59) and Des Kruger (117) steadied the ship with a recordbreaking partnership.

The pair were both eventually dismissed by Hay, but Tait (28) and youngster Kieran Hunt (40) carried on the fight.

Ryan Bell’s 21 was the only other contribution of note as Mid Canterbury fell 18 runs short at 297 for eight after 50 overs.

Mid Canterbury captain Ravenscroft said he was pleased

with the improved batting, and now hopes his side can see off Southland in style to keep the pressure on North Otago, who took a first innings win over South Canterbury.

“We showed a lot of fight in the end.

“I don’t think we expected to get so close, but then scored near on 300, Des and Callum steadied the ship for us which was great,” he said.

“We didn’t bowl badly, but it was pretty hard work, one of their guys (Nick Kwant) spanked us around, but it all bodes well for us and we’re looking forward to Southland now.”

Mid Canterbury will return to Hawke Cup action on Saturday when they lock horns with Southland at the Ashburton Oval.

Teahen starts New Year off in winning style Long-time rider Colin Teahen started the New Year off in fine style as the victor in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s first race of 2016 a 36km handicap event around the Winchmore Church block on Sunday.

Teahen and his co-markers kept the big field of riders at bay, timing their effort to perfection to keep the chasing group out by a mere second on the finish line.

It was enough, however, to lift the Blackburn Cup.

Brian Ellis was the best performer in the strong Ellis stable, securing the second place spoils and Glen Marshall led the chasing group in to claim the final podium spot.

Seasoned campaigner Ross Templeton took fourth place with Kate Smith and Alex Crawford rounding out the top six.

Steve Hands had the final say in the race for fastest time honours riding the course in 48.44secs while co-markers

Michael Templeton and Nigel Douglas took second and third time.

The junior and division two riders competed over 18km.

Connie Davidson secured the junior victory by the slightest of margins in a sprint finish with ever improving Suzie Leech.

Laurence Pithie charged through the field from the scratch mark to take third and fastest time honours riding the distance in 26.56secs.

Abe O’Donnell took out fourth place and second-best time with Oliver Davidson and Maddie Lowry securing top six finishes.

Division two honours were taken by Nicole Ellis with Hillary Singlewood and Andrew Colquhoun stepping onto the podium while Kerry Clough took the fastest time spoils.

Next week the club will contest a 45km handicap event around the Christy’s Road block.

Raonic upsets Federer Canada’s Milos Raonic has upset a misfiring Roger Federer in straight sets to claim the Brisbane International title and send an ominous message ahead of the Australian Open. Raonic exacted revenge for his defeat to the former world No.1 in last year’s final, sealing a 6-4 6-4 victory at a packed Pat Rafter Arena. It is Raonic’s eighth ATP title and one of his most important as the current world No.14 seeks to break into the top five this year and establish himself as a force to be reckoned with.

And with the tournament now collectively under the one banner of the ASB Classic, Budge says next year could be even bigger. ‘Hard day at the office’ The 27th running of the iconic Port of Tauranga Half saw two new champions crowned in blustery conditions at Pilot Bay on Saturday.

Braden Currie and Amelia Watkinson notched their maiden victories in the 27th running of the event that also doubles as New Zealand’s long-distance championships.

Currie, the 29-year-old from Methven, won at his third attempt in 3hr 52 min 26 sec after a second and third placing.

He is a powerful athlete with a killer kick on the run leg similar to 43-year-old legend Cameron Brown, the 10-time Port of Tauranga Half winner who finished third in (3:55.06) behind secondplaced Mark Bowstead (3:54.00).

But Currie looked anything like winning with a deficit of 2:32 leading into the final 21.1km run home after a disastrous bike leg.

“It was a hard day at the office to tell you the truth.

“I sort of felt like pulling out halfway through.

“The bike ride wasn’t happening for me and I was just really struggling,” Currie said.

“I definitely didn’t expect Mark [Bowstead] to swim as well as he did so that made it a really hard race.

“I spent a lot of time chasing and a lot of time battling to catch him up.

Seattle have beaten Minnesota 10-9 to advance to the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. The Seahawks trialled 9-0 heading into the final quarter before a touchdown and then a field goal put Seattle up by one point. “I made up for it doing some local cycling races but obviously triathlon’s my thing and when you can’t do it, it’s hard,” she said.

Watkinson led out of the water to win in 4:16.26 with Candice Hammond second (4:29.17) and Rebecca Fogarty third (4:30.46).

“It is nice to be leading the race as it gives you confidence.

“It is also nice to be crowned national champ and I am hoping to go onwards and upwards from here.”

Fallon stunned by Hudson’s tirade Former All Whites coach Kevin Fallon has labelled Anthony Hudson’s swipe at New Zealand Football as a ‘declaration of death’.

Hudson, who is 18 months through a four-year contract as All Whites coach, launched a venomous tirade on the state of football in New Zealand calling the young players ‘delusional’, the culture ‘laid back’ and described the game as ‘moving backward’, due to the national team only playing three international fixtures in 2015.

Fallon said he was stunned by the 34-year-old Englishman’s comments and is concerned for the New Zealand football community.

“It looked like a declaration of death,” Fallon told the DRS with Martin Devlin.

“I wondered what the young boy was on about.

“I’m looking at the statement and he’s got to realise that we’ve always been under funded and under resourced.

“We’ve had to create our own football environment and not moan. That didn’t mean we didn’t aim for standards, but we accepted where we were at.

Vital ‘sitter’ missed

Anthony Hudson became All Whites coach in 2014.

“But we didn’t come across as a whinging Pom, simple as that.

Herbert got on with it, Adshead, Herbert, myself.

“We just got on with the job.

“When you’re saying things like that it’s as if he can’t cope and he didn’t think it was going to be like this.

“With his resources he’s only had one win in six games against moderate opposition.

“Maybe the pressure has got to the little lad I don’t know.

“But he’s not as experienced as people who have held that position in the past.

“But he seems a little lost at the moment.”

Fallon, who was the assistant coach when the All Whites qualified for the 1982 World Cup before taking sole charge for 52 games, said Hudson should vacate his post as All Whites coach if he has lost confidence in New Zealand Football.

“The part that concerned me was that he said it was impossible to build a team.

“Now that does worry me. Because if that’s how he feels about it he should grab his knapsack and say he’s off.

“If he doesn’t think he can build a team he should pass it and give it to someone who thinks they can.

“I’m very surprised that he said the football and culture is all wrong, because you’re not just knocking the players, you’re knocking the coaches.

“You’re knocking the Declan Edges the Micky Grooms and the Wynton Rufers. All the people that have worked with the academies and brought the players through, you’re saying they’ve not got the answers, I’m 34 and I’ve got all the answers.”

“I hear the CEO is away on holiday, I don’t think he’ll be having a comfortable one.”

But New Zealand under 20 coach Danny Hay said he was not surprised by Hudson’s comments and the outburst came from pure frustration that had been bubbling away for some time.

“He’s come out here with expectations around how much the All Whites were going to play and the professionalism of players that he was going to be working with,” Hay said.

“I think he’s been frustrated on both accounts. When you’re national team coach and you’re not playing enough and you’re not seeing your players, it’s a difficult one for him.“ - NZME

Patience key to Marky Mark Moira Murdoch is in no rush to send last season’s champion two-year-old Marky Mark back into action.

The Waiuku trainer is planning a quiet approach to his upcoming campaign following the Group One winner’s disappointing spring trip to Melbourne.

“He’s going to trial on the 19th at Te Aroha and I’ll assess him after that,” Murdoch said.

“I’m not in any great hurry with him and he’s coming along nicely after a break since Australia.”

Successful in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes and the Gr.3 Eclipse Stakes last season, Marky Mark finished fourth in the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas before he was sent across the Tasman.

The Gr.3 Carbine Club Stakes was to have been his main aim,

but his failure to acclimatise to his new surroundings at David Brideoake’s Mornington property resulted in him bypassing the Flemington race.

Marky Mark subsequently returned home after he was unplaced in the Gr.2 Sandown Guineas.

Although the son of Makfi, whose half-bother (Lot 430) by Snitzel will be sold through the Hallmark Stud draft at Karaka on January 25, has yet to win beyond 1400 metres, Murdoch believes he can be effective over more ground.

“I’ve always thought he was a 2000 metre horse,” she said.

“He ran over the mile in Australia, but he wasn’t 100 per cent then so you can’t take too much out of that.

On January 11, 2016 passed away peacefully at Bethesda Rest Home, Christchurch surrounded by her family and in her 101st year. Loved wife of the late Thomas (Tom) Ingram, and mother and mother in law of Lena and Bob Barlow, and Alastair and Canterbury owned, Johanne Ingram. Loved Gran locally operated of Warren and Janine Barlow (Perth), Lynelle and Denis Patersons Woods (Oreti), Hayley and Funeral Services Alistair Chapman (Christchurch), Andrea and Ashburton Barlow and Rex Prebble (Christchurch), Christina, Crematorium Ltd Gareth, and the late Louise Office and Chapel Ingram. And her nine great grandchildren. Our grateful Corner East & Cox thanks to Dr Winter and the Streets, Ashburton staff at Bethesda for their support and loving care of Jemima over the last 15 years. Duo break 54-year-old record

They may not have known it at the time, but Des Kruger and Callum Gallagher made history during Mid Canterbury’s 18-run loss to the Canterbury Senior Performance Squad on Sunday at the Ashburton Oval.

The duo’s second wicket partnership of 190 runs broke the previous record of 181, set by Russell Hortin and Brian Tutty in January,

1962, when Mid Canterbury took an outright win over Fiji at the oval.

Sunday’s fixture was Kruger’s second representative match since returning from England six weeks ago, where he played for Torquay in Devon and Wiltshire’s Warminster Cricket Club.

The 25-year-old posted 117 off 102 deliveries to fire Mid Canterbury back into contention and is now hoping his fine form can con-

tinue in the Hawke Cup. “To be honest, I wasn’t aware of the record at all, but it was pretty cool,” he said.

“Going to England has improved my game in a lot of small ways.

“I’m pretty pleased with the form I’m in and just want to carry on.”

Sunday’s tie rounded off a memorable week for Gallagher, who also matched the record for

most catches in an innings by a Mid Canterbury wicketkeeper against the Emus last Wednesday.

The Tech player is now one of four keepers to achieve the feat, alongside Brian Tutty and Brian Isherwood, who both caught five against South Canterbury in 1962 and 1968 respectively, and Jason Overend, who managed five catches twice against North Otago in 1996 and Buller a decade later.

Gallagher echoed his teammate’s sentiments in producing solid performances with the bat in Mid Canterbury’s upcoming Hawke Cup fixtures against Southland, North Otago and Otago Country.

“I didn’t expect it, it’s outstanding.

“Hopefully we can build on that coming in to the Hawke Cup games and start scoring runs like that,” he said.

Astle played one test, a 167-run win over Sri Lanka in late 2012, but has been a solid performer for

Canterbury in all forms.

“Todd had a solid campaign in this year’s Georgie Pie Super Smash and has been a consistent performer for Canterbury over a number of seasons,” said coach Mike Hesson.
